Editorial Well it’s taken a little longer than originally planned, but we think that you’ll agree that this issue was well worth the wait. We have pulled out all the stops to bring you possibly our best issue yet, and some of the cars we have this month are just amazing. Take, for example, the gorgeous Ferrari 275GTB ‘Competizione Clienti.’ We would have been delighted to feature any Ferrari 275 in the magazine, but to have one of the incredibly rare factory race prepared customer cars valued at around £3million is just sensational. Then there is the stunning Icona Vulcano concept ‘supercar’ which made it’s European debut at the recent Salon Privé in London. It was conceived at a ‘one-off’ concept car to demonstrate the manufacturer’s capabilities, but now the Vulcano could be put into limited production. Watch this space! We also have reports from the all-new Sywell Classic and all the classic and supercars from Salon Privé, as well as a feature on the Bentley Motor Museum in Sussex. Not bad eh? You might also notice that we have a few more adverts than usual, which is thanks to the superb efforts our new Marketing Director, Shaun O’Leary. As I’m sure you will agree, one of the best things about Classic, Performance & Retro is that it doesn’t cost a penny, but to keep the magazine free to read, we need advertisers, and we sincerely appreciate the support each one has given us. In turn, we need to ask a favour of you, dear reader. We need you to click on the adverts in the magazine and visit our advertiser’s websites, and if possible, buy something! If you support our advertisers, they will support us, and you get a free magazine to read and hopefully a bargain or two as well. Not only that, but by supporting our advertisers, you will be ploughing much needed funds back into the classic and sports car industry, and that surely has to be a good thing. Don’t forget, Classic, Performance & Retro can be read on just about any internet capable device, so if you are one of the millions of people who has a ‘smart-phone’ you can just tap on our magazine and read it on your phone! That’s a great feature for people on the move or who travel frequently. Not only that, but you can also access all our back issues from your phone too, so effectively you are carrying nearly 30 magazines around in your pocket. Try doing that with printed magazines! Well, as always we hope you enjoy reading this latest issue of Classic, Performance & Retro. Drive safe!

Fangio Auction Star

Fangio’s IKA Torino 380S Offered For Sale The ex-Juan Manuel Fangio Mercedes-Benz W196 sold for an eye-watering £19,601,500 earlier this year, but if your bid fell a little short, don’t worry because now you have another opportunity to own one of the iconic racing driver’s cars. Better still, you might just be able to afford this one! The car in question is a 1970 IKA Torino 380S which will be offered for sale in the forthcoming Silverstone Auctions’ sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show in November. It is understood that the car was presented to the Argentinean driver by the manufacturer and the car comes with a history file containing an registration papers, insurance documents, handbook, service card and even Fangio’s international licence. The car is said to be in good original condition and has been unused since Fangio’s death in 1995. It will be sold without reserve but its provenance means that it will still attract a lot of serious bidders. Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions, said: “Silverstone Auctions has been lucky enough in the past to offer lots from the world’s best racing drivers including Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher. “However, Fangio is the king of them all, so we’re honoured to have his 1970 IKA Torino at our NEC Classic Sale and the fact that it is being offered without reserve is sure to only increase its appeal to potential bidders “Indeed, few would argue that this is a very special item and we are very proud to have been chosen by his family to present his prized model to the global market from our sale in the UK.” It is believed that Fangio was gifted the Torino 380S by IKA in respect of his contribution to the creation of what is commonly referred to as Argentina’s national car. www.silverstoneauctions.com

Triumph Timewarp

Timewarp Triumph Finds New Home Overseas A 1961 Triumph Herald with just 20 miles on the clock from new sold on September 28 for an impressive £13,500. The Herald is 100% complete and even has its original tax disk from 1961 still fixed to the windscreen. The car was supplied by trailer to its original lady owner by a local Norfolk car dealer, but she sadly passed away before she had a chance to drive it. The dealer later bought the car back, and realising that it hadn’t been driven, decided to place it in his private collection where it has remained since. Now the ‘timewarp’ classic has found a new owner, apparently from outside the UK, the inevitable question has to be; what will they do with it? Driving the car and adding mileage will rob it of the one thing that gives it its value; restoring it will have the same effect, so the only real option is to place the car on display in a museum. www.eama-norwich.co.uk

Classic Rookies Learn Skills

‘Classic Virgins Day’ Hailed A Great Success

The first Classic Virgins Experience Day, an initiative organised and held at the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon and in association with Warwickshire-based The Tool Connection (home of Laser Tools, Gunson and Kamasa), was judged to be a great success by all who attended. Hosted by Bob Wilkinson, a seasoned veteran himself of the Ford Y & C Model Register, the September 28 event drew together experts from the classic car world to explain and share their passion with the 17 classic car ‘newbies’, each one of them new to the classic car hobby, and keen to learn more. Bob Wilkinson started the day with a gentle introduction to the benefits of classic car ownership and the importance of joining the appropriate classic car club. Practical workshop sessions followed, with Roger Hanslip (Morris Minor up on vehicle hoist) explaining about servicing procedures, Geoff Dee on carburettors and fuel pumps and Bob Wilkinson’s maintenance tips for classic ignition systems. The ‘classic virgins’ were treated to the delights of no less that 14 different classic cars, ranging from an MGTF to a Ford Escort Mexico, all owned by club enthusiasts, and driven through the Warwickshire countryside for a rendezvous at The Tool Connection headquarters in Southam. A tour of the company’s impressive Tech Centre and showroom followed, with advice from The Tool Connection’s technical author, Keith Anderson, on how to put together a good quality and comprehensive tool kit without breaking the bank. Here Comes Hutch!

Starsky & Hutch Star At Classic Motor Show There will be a very special guest appearing at this year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, and he will be bringing his famous car with him too. The star name in question is actor David Soul who played ‘Hutch’ in the 70s TV series Starsky & Hutch. The show featured the exploits of two American police detectives who roared around the city streets in their bright red Ford Gran Torino, and a replica of the car will be on display on the Lancaster insurance stand. Visitors to the show can also enter a competition to meet the actor and win a signed photo. Mike Edgeley, Managing Director of Lancaster Insurance Services said: “We are thrilled to have David Soul on our stand and to be able to offer fans the chance to meet him. He is such an iconic TV personality from the ‘70s and I for one, remember watching Starsky & Hutch as a child. To have both David and the Gran Torino at this year’s show is fantastic.” David Soul will be at The NEC Birmingham on Saturday November 16, at 12.15pm and on Sunday November 17, at 12.30pm and 3.00pm on Lancaster’s ‘Gran Torino Experience’ stand, in hall 7, at stand 220. www.necclassicmotorshow.com

Show Business!

Manchester Success Coventry Up Next The first ever Footman James Manchester Classic Car Show took place at EventCity over the weekend of September 21-22, and has been hailed a success by its organisers. Visitors were treated to a wide and diverse selection of cars ranging from exotica such as Aston Martins, Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis through to all the popular classics from the 1950’s to the 1990’s. Over 60 car clubs, 45 private entries and 15 Concours entries took the total number of cars in the halls into the hundreds. Not only were there static car displays, but just outside the halls was a full-on rally stage starring fifteen Group B rally cars including a short wheelbase Quattro and a 6R4. Three times daily these icons of historic motorsport entertained onlookers while providing some fire-breathing, tyre-smoking ‘sideways’ action. Visitors to the show also had a sneak preview of the 1969 Morris Minor Traveller, which, recently obtained by show sponsor Footman James, has been purchased as a restoration project which classic fans will have the opportunity to win in 2014. The Traveller will be lovingly restored over the next 12 months, during which time fans can follow the vehicle’s restoration journey online. The finished project, will be the star prize in a 2014 competition. The show’s organisers - One Louder Events - now turn their attention to another new show which will be held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on January 5, 2014. The Autojumble (Midlands), will be held in the main 65,000sq/ft exhibition hall (the Jaguar Exhibition Hall) on Sunday January the 5th 2014. The large, modern, fully heated hall has capacity for hundreds of stands and will be occupied by many of the country’s top specialist traders offering all sorts of Classic, Veteran, & Vintage Car Parts, Automobilia, Automotive Literature, Models, Tools, Trim, Restoration Services, Garage Equipment and individual garage clearances. www.theautojumble.co.uk

Nuvolari Icon Offered

Nuvolari’s Last Winner Offered For Sale In USA A Cisitalia-Abarth 204A which was driven by Tazio Nuvolari on his last competitive victory is to be sold off in the forthcoming Motostalgia sale in Austin, Texas, on November 16. According to the auctioneer, this is the original car driven by Nuvolari in the Palermo Monte Pellegrino Hill Climb which he won at the age of 57. He died three years later in 1953. This 1950 Cisitalia-Abarth 204A holds the unique distinction of being the last of the Cisitalias, the first of the Abarths and the last car raced to victory by the legendary Tazio Nuvolari. This original 1950 Cisitalia-Abarth chassis #04 is the most complete and well-kept survivor of the seven original models that were created. Chassis #04 is the only original 204A that was built for and raced by Tazio Nuvolari. The car’s originality is well documented including extensive Nuvolari racing photos from the 1950s and complete photo documentation of the recent restoration in 2010. There are numerous original documents such as the Abarth certificate of origin, the 1950 Certificato Di Approvazione (Certificate of Registration) and its current FIVA card (Federation Internationale Vehicules Anciens or International Federation of Historic Vehicles) verifying that the chassis #04 with its engine #014-1090 was the original car raced by Tazio Nuvolari during his winning race. www.motostalgia.com

2014 Diary Date

Dates Fixed For 2014 Beaulieu International Autojumble The 2014 dates for the Beaulieu International Autojumble, held in the grounds of the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Hampshire, have been confirmed as the September 6-7. Traditionally, the International Autojumble is held on the second full weekend of September and for several years the Goodwood Revival, the date of which is always dependent on the F1 Grand Prix calendar, has taken place on the following weekend. However, last year the Revival was brought forward a week to fit in with the F1 race schedule and, as it is not in the best interests of Goodwood, Beaulieu, their exhibitors or visitors, to hold events on the same weekend, the decision was made to move Beaulieu’s International Autojumble forward a week as well. The same situation has prevailed for 2014 so Beaulieu will again be held a week early, on the September 6-7. 2014 will be the 47th year of this popular event, which annually attracts over 38,000 visitors and exhibitors from all over the world. The Autojumble boasts over 2,000 stands selling all kinds of vintage and classic motoring parts, accessories, literature, tools and clothing. There is also an Automart with over 200 cars for sale, from restoration projects to vehicles in concours condition and a Dealermart with classic cars for sale. On the Saturday, Bonhams hold an auction of collectors’ motor cars, motorcycles and automobilia, whilst Sunday highlights include a Trunk Traders area where amateur autojumblers can sell their motoring items from their car boots. Veteran Wheeler Dealer!

TV’s ‘Wheeler Dealers’ Mark 100th Restoration To celebrate reaching the 100th car milestone on hit Discovery Channel show Wheeler Dealers, presenters Mike Brewer and Edd China will restore and drive their dream veteran car, the Darracq 1903, in the Royal Automobile Club London to Brighton Veteran Car Run on Sunday, November 3. To mark this milestone, Mike and Edd return to their favourite childhood film; 1953 BAFTA winning Genevieve, a charming tale of rivals who race to Brighton and back for a bet. The real star of the film is Genevieve, a Darracq 1904, and for their 100th build Mike and Edd will restore their very own Genevieve to run the 60-mile distance in the Veteran Car Run (VCR). Mike said: “I’m so proud that we’ve reached this milestone. The Darracq is the perfect motor for us to celebrate the 100th Wheeler Dealers car – a car that’s over 100 years old itself. One thing is for sure – Edd’s going to have his work cut out on this one to make sure we cross that finish line!” Edd added: “I’ve wanted to work on a veteran car for years – the Darracq is an incredible machine so I can’t wait to get under the bonnet! It’s going to be a steep learning curve but I’m determined to get us to Brighton in style.” Haynes International Motor Museum has lent Wheeler Dealers its rare 1903 Darracq for this special episode. www.veterancarrun.com

Classic Challenge

Excellent Turn Out For Throckmorton Challenge Ninety Nine crews started this year’s Throckmorton Challenge which was held at Throckmorton Airfield near Worcester on October 12. The annual event, which is organised by the Historic Endurance Rallying Organisation (HERO), attracted a wide variety of classic and performance cars to compete in 15 very competitive tests. The majority of the tests took place on the airfield, formerly known as RAF Pershore and a one-time dispersal site for Vulcan bombers, but other tests saw the cars take to the local roads to compete in regularity time trials. The location was intended to be easy on the cars as the runways have relatively smooth tarmac, but despite this, a brace of Minis very early mechanical issues. As is expected on an event of this nature, the fastest car is not always the winner. Its consistency and overall performance that counts. This was clearly shown by the overall winner of the Club event, car 52 the Imp of Chris and Fred Winter. Honours in the National B event were taken by car 5 the Porsche of Howard Warren and Ryan Pickering. Full report and results can be found on the HERO website at: www.heroevents.eu

Elan Elation!

CSCC Thriller At Rain Soaked Snetterton A rain soaked Snetterton Park in Norfolk was the scene for an epic battle when the Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC) staged its highly anticipated one-hour race on Sunday October 20. The race was the first of six hour long races which will take place in the coming months. A grid hosting an impressive 21 cars saw the Lotus Elan of Nick and Al Fleming on pole position, a remarkable achievement considering they were forced to change the engine in the middle of the night after breaking a crankshaft. A second Elan, driven by Mark Halstead and Stuart McPherson, lined up alongside the pole-sitter while behind was an amazing array of British classics, with names like Jaguar, Triumph, MG, Austin Healey, Morgan and TVR all represented. From the start, the two Elans made good progress until the Flemming car limped out of the race on lap 6. A battle then ensued between the remaining Lotus and John Davison’s TVR Griffith. The race was interrupted briefly when the safety car was despatched to allow the safe recovery of the David Erwin and Will Dick’s Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti Super, allowed the pack to bunch up again and it looked like all the work done by the leading pair could come undone with just ten minute left to go. The TVR held the lead as an aggressive McPherson slung the Lotus into the outside line at Murrays in an attempt to pass Davison. It was a brave move, but it sent the Elan sliding off the track and allowed the TVR to pull away. It looked like the TVR had the race won, but then the skies opened and more rain came down. The TVR, which was now about five seconds ahead of the Lotus, lost grip and spun, leaving McPherson to take the lead and hold it until the chequered flag. Third place went to Jon Wolfe who gave a spirited performance in his Ford Falcon Sprint and forth place was taken by Brian Arculus in the Lotus Elite. www.classicsportscarclub

Masters Champs!

Voyazides & Hadfield Win FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship The Anglo-Greek partnership of Simon Hadfield and Leo Voyazides secured the inaugural FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship, held at Jerez, Spain, on October 11-13. Arch-enthusiast Voyazides and his co-driver, ace preparer and racer Hadfield, guided Voyazides’ Lola T70 Mk3B to race success and that in turn secured the championship. The duo took seven wins during the season, and even skipping one round of the new championship didn’t affect their path to the championship. “I’m delighted,” said Voyazides. “Simon did a great job all season and to win an FIA championship, especially one in its first year, is very special.” Voyazides also paid tribute to the late Bruce Stevens who passed away in the summer who looked after Leo’s cars for many seasons and was instrumental in much of his success. Reigning World Sportscar Masters champion Mark Bates took second in the FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship in his Porsche 911 RSR and Chris Jolly/Steve Farthing took third in Jolly’s Cooper T61 despite a technical gremlin preventing them from taking part in Spain. www.themastersseries.com

MG Car Club

MGCC Celebrates Its 83rd Birthday October 12 was a very special day for the MG Car Club as the club celebrated its 83rd birthday. It was on October 12, 1930, that the first ever meeting of the club took place at the Roebuck Hotel near Stevenage, with over 30 MGs and their owners coming together. Having previously written a letter to the popular magazine ‘The Light Car’, questioning: “What about an MG Car Club?” Roy Marsh attended, as did John Thornley, who was elected Secretary of the new Club that day. A committee was formed and a date in November agreed for the next meeting, at which 50 MGs turned up for a run and the MG Car Club was well under way. By January 1931 John Thornley was happy to report that the Club was nearing nearly 200 members. Today the Car Club has almost 40,000 members worldwide and continues to grow from strength to strength! I’m sure you would like to join us in wishing the MGCC a very happy birthday! www.mgcc.co.uk

Car parks don’t get any more impressive than this! debut here at Salon Privé. It is scheduled to go on sale in 2014 at a cost of £135,000 for the basic model. The car is powered by a V6 engine producing over 375bhp and uses the tried and tested two-door mid-engined layout. The Venator actually made its world debut at Pebble Beach in California in August, but this was the first time it had been seen on this side of the Atlantic. Spyker CEO and designer of the B6 Venator Victor Müller - was keen to point out that the new car had retained many of Spyker’s ‘trademark’ features, such as aircraft-inspired switchgear and exposed gear linkage. Certainly looked impressive.

the Spyker, the two could hardly be considered rivals, as they will no doubt find very different customer bases, but the performance figures look more than respectable. Its 6.2-litre GM-sourced V8 engine produces 510bhp and 650lb ft of torque, which results in a 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 203mph. Unusually, it is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox as the only transmission option, something that will no doubt appeal to the traditionalists out there. The car weighs 1,390kg and uses an all-carbon fibre bodyshell along with a lightweight hybrid space-frame chassis. Speaking about the Sarthe, company spokesman Lucas Oosterhof said Vencer planned a limited production run to ensure ‘collectability and rarity.’ The company must be hoping that that rarity

Another car with a lot of ‘wowfactor’ was the Icona Vulcano. You can read all about it elsewhere in this issue, suffice to say that if this was an exercise in styling, it certainly ticked all the boxes. Whether it

Stars Of The Show! Of course, perhaps the most eagerly anticipated part of Salon Privé was the Chubb Insurance Concours D’Elegance which featured some incredibly rare and desirable cars. This year’s competition attracted 101 entrants across 12 different categories, with a combined total value of

£65million. To say it was hotly contested would be something of an understatement, and the quality of the cars on offer was just incredible. The judges - among whom were Derek Bell MBE, Vicki Butler-Henderson, Victor Muller (Spyker CEO) and Steve Parrish - had some tough choices to make. Perhaps the most coveted award on offer was for Best of Show which was presented to Sarah Allen for her stunning

Back inside the show, and a selection of ‘supercars’ glittered in the sunshine on the lawn in front of Syon House. They were part of the Audemars Piguet British Super Car Show, and among the machines on display were a McLaren MP4-12C, a Bugatti Veyron, a Pagani Huayra and a Koenigsegg Agera R. Quite a collection. Salon Privé really is a show that promises to bring together the very best from the automotive world, and boy does it deliver. It is a pity that the ticket prices prohibit all but the most ardent of car enthusiasts, but it does help the event maintain that air of exclusivity and give it a relaxed, ‘garden-party’ sort of atmosphere. If you want my advice, start saving now and make the effort to go along next year (September 3-5, 2014). You wont regret it.

Ferrari 275GTB

Competizione Clienti

The Ferrari 275GTB is widely regarded as one of the best cars ever built, but the pinnacle of the marque were the special race prepared ‘Competizione Clienti’ cars. Simon Hazeldine takes a closer look at one such example.

I

t’s funny how things work out sometimes. You make meticulous plans to go somewhere and do something a little bit special, but when you get there you find that what awaits you totally exceeds your expectations. That was 32 www.cprmag.co.uk

exactly what happened to me recently, when I was put in touch with Talacrest Proprietor and leading Ferrari specialist, John Collins. John had kindly agreed to let us run a feature on one of his cars, a Fly yellow Ferrari 275GTB, and as I set off down

the A1, that was the car I thought I was going to see. However, on arrival at Talacrest HQ, things didn’t go quite according to plan. John was seated in his immaculate office with his feet up on his large, glass-topped desk. He cuts an imposing

Paul Khouri and Howard Grundon battle for position.

The beautiful flowing lines of the Pininfarina bodywork make the 275GTB almost ‘timeless.’ figure, with a steel-eyed stare and a Glaswegian accent that adds heaps of character to his deep, gravelly voice. A man of few words, he appears to have little time for idle chit-chat, saying only what needs to be said and nothing more. He explains that the yellow car has gone to the workshop as he has just found a customer for it, but would I like to use the much rarer and much November 2013 33

more valuable ‘Competition’ car? Sounded good to me, even if at the time I didn’t fully appreciate just how rare this particular car was.

Innovation The car in question was a 1965 Ferrari 275GTB ‘Competizione Clienti.’ Now compared to Mr Collins, I am certainly no 34 www.cprmag.co.uk

Ferrari expert, but I know what a 275GTB looks like and I know a little about the cars too, but the ‘ Competizione Clienti’ part required a bit more investigation on my part. Roughly translated it means ‘competing customers’ and once that has been established, the rest is fairly self-explanatory. It’s

a competition spec car that could be bought by Ferrari customers. The story of how it came about is an interesting one too. The Ferrari 275 series was launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1964 and replaced the 250 range of cars in all its various forms. The new cars came in both soft and hard top formats, or Spyder and Berlinetta to use correct Ferrari terminology, and the 275 was the first roadgoing Ferrari with independent rear suspension. The rear set-up consisted of double-wishbones, coil-springs, Koni shocks, and an anti-roll bar. Another innovative new feature saw the gearbox being incorporated into the rear axle to create a ‘transaxle.’ This improved weight distribution, something that was enhanced

“Ferrari soon turned its attentions to producing a competition version of the 275GTB...” further by also moving the engine slightly rearwards. The engine itself was the tried and tested, race-proven 3.3 litre V12 Columbo unit, topped with three Weber carburettors which provided good low

end torque and excellent acceleration.

Just Right The bodywork was designed by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, and by Sergio

Pininfarina’s own admission, it was a natural evolvement of the styling used on the 250. It was one of those cars where everything seemed to be ‘just right’ at first time of asking, and was and praised by journalists and critics the world over. Obviously feeling rather pleased with the new car, Ferrari soon turned its attentions to producing a ‘competition’ version of the 275 which would be made available to its customers. These cars were built in three phases, with the first cars (chassis 06003 and 06021) receiving relatively mild modifications. There then followed three super lightweight, tube-frame November 2013 35

specials which had six carbs, a dry-sump engine and a ‘Lussostyle’ air intake on the bonnet. In 1965, Ferrari produced the first proper ‘Competizione Clienti’ (CC) cars when it built a batch of ten special Berlinettas for customers. These CC machines were powered by a fairly standard ‘wet-sump’ engine topped

with six Weber 40 DCN3 carburettors. An oversized fuel filler cap was mounted on the rear right-hand quarter which fed an enlarged 140 litre petrol tank (standard tank was 94 litres). This larger fuel tank meant that the rear shelf on the CC cars was noticeably higher than on standard road cars

too. Externally, the biggest clue to the ‘ Competizione Clienti’ cars’ sporting prowess was the addition of three diagonal air vents cut into the rear wing behind the wheel and the bodywork itself was constructed from lightweight alloy to give a considerable weight saving. The final batch of competition cars were referred to as Ferrari 275GTB/C and featured a super lightweight longnose alloy body and special lightweight frame with a dry sump three-carburettor engine. These cars were also the last ones to come built at Mauro Forghieri and Ferrari’s racing department as later cars were modified in Modena.

History The green car in our feature has had quite an impressive history and is a rarity even

The immaculate engine bay housing the V12 ‘Columbo’ engine.

“Even at close to £6,000, with import duty and tax, the Ferrari represents excellent value and it is quite the best car I have ever driven.” by ‘Competizione Clienti’ car standards. It was built in 1965 as one of the second series of ten ‘Competizione Clienti’ cars built, and also one of just three right-hand drive examples. It was originally painted in a more traditional shade of Rosso Chiaro and trimmed with a Nero (black) interior. It is currently fitted with Campagnolo alloy wheels,

although it has worn chrome wire wheels in the past.

Le Mans Link The car was ordered by Maranello Concessionaires in spring 1965 as a reserve car for the 24 Hour Race at Le Mans, but unfortunately the car didn’t get finished in time for the race. Later that year in September, it was shown at 42nd International IAA Motor

Show in Frankfurt, Germany. By October the car had been sold to Patrick Sean ‘Paddy’ McNally, a respected journalist and, later, founder of Allsport Limited with future Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone. Obviously impressed, McNally enthused: “Even at close on £6,000, with the cost with import duty and tax, the Ferrari represents excellent value and it is quite the best November 2013 37

car I have ever driven.” Despite this adulation, McNally sold the car just two years later to Alan Mann, who apparently returned the car to the Ferrari factory to have the bumpers removed and the large fog lamps fitted. This theory is backed up by a letter from the car’s third owner, Frank Gardner, an Australian racing driver who bought the car to use between race meetings in Europe. He eventually returned to Australia and took the Ferrari with him, eventually selling the car to cigarette manufacturer Gallagher International and from there it passed on to Bill Brown, a Sydney news agent and racing personality. In September 1968, Brown gave the car its first taste of 36 www.cprmag.co.uk

competitive motorsport when he entered the car with David McKay’s Scuderia Veloce in the Surfer’s Paradise 6 Hours. George Reynolds and co-driver Phil West (race no. 61) raced the car, finishing first in their class. In 1970, the car changed hands again, bought by racing

driver and show promoter Jim Abbott of Melbourne, and following his death two years later, the car passed through three more owners before being purchased by Maxwell Lane of Sydney. Lane drove the car in the 1993 Targa Tasmania and later in the Historic Australian Grand Prix

Demonstrations at Albert Park. I took a little time to have a really good look around the car and was really impressed with its condition. It wasn’t one of those over-prepared cars that looks clinical, almost too perfect; no, this car has a gently aged patina that allows the history to seep from every seam. The engine sounds simply glorious too. It revs freely and no smoke is visible from the exhaust. Of course, cars like this one are designed to be raced,

often by amateur drivers, and that means they get crashed. In fact, when I went back into John’s office, he showed me some photos of seriously damaged 275GTBs, and then pointed out that his car was the only one he knew of that had never been crashed. And if you thought that the Ferrari’s racing days were over, you can think again, because this car has recently competed in the Goodwood Revival and the Le Mans Classic, and no doubt the next

owner will want to continue its racing pedigree. He, or she, will need to be brave though, as cars like this are currently selling for around the £3million mark, and that can only mean a hefty repair bill should the unthinkable ever happen. Maybe that heated private museum doesn’t sound so bad after all! Special thanks to John Collins at Talacrest (01344 308178) for his assistance in making this feature. www.talacrest.com

Ferrari 512BB Also-ran or contender? Phil Sullivan takes a closer look at the Ferrari 512BB Berlinetta Boxer.

T

he Ferrari 512BB Berlinetta Boxer slips under the radar of all but the most knowledgeable of car enthusiasts. It didn’t star in a famous, long running TV series like the 308GTB (Magnum PI) and it didn’t have the outrageously radical styling of the Ferrari Testarossa to make it a serious ‘poster car.’ However, this car shouldn’t be dismissed as just another ‘also ran.’ No, this Boxer was a serious contender. The Ferrari 512BB evolved from the Ferrari 365 GT4 42 www.cprmag.co.uk

BB which was revealed to the world at the 1971 Paris Motor Show, yet it wasn’t until 1973 when the first cars started to roll off the production line. The 365’s Pininfarina designed bodywork was ahead of its time and featured radical ‘pop-up’ headlights and that classic ‘wedge’ shape that would define many Ferrari many cars until the present day,

and it was powered by a ‘flat-12’ 4.4 litre engine. The 512BB launched in 1976 used that same sleek design, but featured a larger 360hp 4,942cc ‘flat 12-cylinder’ engine with an increased compression ratio of 9.2:1. It featured a ‘dry-sump’ oil system which was used to eliminate oil starvation during hard cornering. It was this engine which

effectively gave the car its name, or at least its number. The five in 512 indicates the size of engine (5-litres) while the 12 part denotes the number of cylinders. The 512BB was also fitted with a new dual-plate clutch system which lessened the pedal effort required, and coped with the extra power from the engine. The car we used for

this feature is currently being offered for sale by Ferrari specialist Foskers Engineering at Brands Hatch, Kent (01474 874777). It had recently been given a full ‘engineout’ service which included a full suspension overhaul and fitting new cambelts. It was then entered into the Ferrari Owners Club Concours where it achieved First in Class.

It really is in fabulous condition and looks amazing as the last of the summer sunshine lights up that Rosso Corsa paintwork. I’m not quite so keen on the lower section of bodywork which is painted black; it reminds me of the days when people would have sill replacement work done, and then plaster the new sills with underseal November 2013 43

to avoid paying out for a respray! Inside, the car is very retro. By that I mean that this was the period that saw Ferrari move away from chrome bezels and traditional white on black circular gauges in favour of garishly coloured plastic items. For example, the gauges in this car are still circular and black, but needles and numbers are bright orange! The traditional Ferrari chrome gear gate is still fitted, and the gear stick itself is topped with an unfussy spherical knob. The bucket-style seats are comfortable to sit in, but again suffer from that famous ‘lack of taste’ that defined the late 1970s and 80s. Were the black stripes running across the tan seats really necessary? 44 www.cprmag.co.uk

The retro-fest interior might not be to everybody’s taste, but it does give the car heaps of character, and let’s face it, it would be pretty bland in there if it were all finished in black. Performance wise, the car had a respectable top speed of 188mph and could run 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds. Ferrari 512s were also used competitively in a number of race series,

with four cars even being entered in the 1978 Le Mans 24 Hour Race. Sadly, none of them finished the event. I like the Boxer. It’s a pretty car and it drives beautifully. It might not attract the limelight like some of its stablemates, but all the same, it is a real contender. With thanks to Foskers Engineering for suppling the car for this feature. 01474 874777. www.foskers.com

U

That quintessentially British automotive brand, famous for its well appointed tourers and luxury sports cars, took on the Americans at their own game and created the awesome 1996 V8 Vantage. Combining aggressive styling with sheer power, the Vantage represented a break with tradition for Aston Martin and if there’s one thing that can be said about this car, it’s that it has presence. reach 200mph); a V600 5-speed gearbox conversion, ‘driving dynamics’ brakes and suspension upgrade, traction control and sports exhaust system. The attention to detail and no-expensespared devotion given to the car doesn’t stop there. It also has a sound system with upgraded amplifiers, loudspeakers and boot-mounted CD stacker, CD/DVD player, complete with FM and digital radio and DVD satellite navigation. It could be regarded as ‘audio overkill’ as everybody knows that the only music worth listening to in an Aston Martin is that which emanates from the exhaust pipe! The Vantage was first shown to the world in this guise in September 1992, and was produced from 1993 through 2000. Some said it was simply a reworked Virage, and a casual glance would seem to confirm that, but in reality there was much more to it than that. The external design was completely reworked, leaving only the doors and roof of the car the same. The Vantage was wider too, and had four large circular ‘grapefruit’ tail lights which gave the car’s hind quarters a very American look. One of the car’s other notable features

was the size of those massive wheels. It was fitted with huge 362 mm (14 in) brake discs and 18 inch wheels which dominated the outward appearance of the car. Top speed was a claimed 186mph, while it could run a 0-60mph time of just 4.6 seconds; no mean feat for a car of this size, and weighing in at nearly two tons, so now you know why the car needs those huge brake discs! With just under 300 being built, the V8 Vantage remains a highly collectable car, and one that is only likely to appreciate in value during the coming years. November 2013 49

inprofile: 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible

Wind In The hair Hard top...or soft top? The Aston Martin DB5 comes in both flavours, but with only 123 examples of the convertible built, they are extremely rare. However, one such car has just come onto the market...

T

o gentlemen of a ‘certain age,’ the Aston Martin DB5 was, and for many still is, the ultimate dream car. The model shot to fame largely thanks to its starring role in ‘James Bond’ films such as Thunderball and Goldfinger, where the heavily armoured Aston developed a habit for ejecting unwanted passengers via the sunroof! The DB5 was designed to carry its occupants at speed, over long distances, in well-appointed surroundings; a job it did exceptionally well. It wasn’t an all-out speed machine like the Ferraris or Maseratis emerging from Italy at the time, it was much too refined for that. No, the Aston Martin DB5 allowed you to arrive in style, and as a status symbol, did indeed show you had ‘arrived.’ Now while Mr Bond’s ‘one-off’ sunroof arrangement might appeal to those with a slightly 50 www.cprmag.co.uk

mischievous nature, the factory came up with a rather more passenger friendly ‘wind-in-your-hair’ option - the DB5 Convertible. Only 123 ‘drophead’ versions of the DB5 were ever produced making it one of the most collectable of all the Aston variants, and it is very rare to see one offered for sale. Yet Buckinghamshire-based Aston Martin specialist Desmond J Smail

(01234 713083) has just such a machine in their showroom, and they don’t get much better than this. It is a genuine twoowner example (shown in the pictures) and is finished in British Racing Green with contrasting Red leather interior, black carpet, and comes complete with a rare factory hard top. It was initially purchased by a Mr Moorhouse who purchased the car from new and accepted delivery on August 31, 1964. He used it sparingly over the next 12-15 years. The second owner then purchased the car, and since the car had not been used for a few years and had languished unloved, it was entrusted to PAS Mobile to bring the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ back to life. PAS is run by renowned Aston Martin specialist Peter Austen Smith. The car was revived and repainted and the new owner used it for many miles of pleasure until a small accident damaged the front end. The Aston Martin then was entrusted to Desmond J Smail Ltd who stripped down and restored the car between 2001-2002. The car has only made occasional outings since and has made appearances at the local Aston Martin Owners’ Club events.

It really is a stunning example of a very pretty car, yet opinion is divided among Aston Martin enthusiasts as to which is more desirable - the coupe, or the convertible. Obviously the convertible is a very rare car, and that alone makes it much sought-after, yet some say that removing the roof has robbed the car of its aesthetic beauty, and therefore, the coupe is the car of choice. What ever your opinion, you have to admit that this convertible is a very attractive car, and one that will no doubt be highly appreciated owner number three! November 2013 51

Vulcanic eruptions! The Icona Vulcano (sic) is a ‘one-off’ concept car created to showcase its manufacturer’s capabilities. Now there is talk about putting the car into production. Phil Sullivan takes a closer look at this supercar of the future.

T

he idea of the Italians teaming up with the Chinese to build an eye-catching, high-performance supercar sounds about as mad as it gets. I mean, one of them has over a century of experience in producing some of the most iconic cars the world has ever seen, while the other has built virtually nothing of note over the same period. It’s ridiculous, right? Well, maybe not. This year’s Salon Privé saw a number of new cars making their British or European debuts, and among them was a sleek-looking two-seater coupé with some very unique styling features. It was the Icona Vulcano, previously a ‘one-off’ concept car, but the latest news was that this impressive looking machine could soon be going into production, albeit in very limited numbers.

Based on further development of this advanced technology, there are also plans to produce the Vulcano in an alternative four wheel drive layout. This involves using a twin turbo V6 engine coupled with two electric motors for front traction, which will deliver a total power of 870bhp. here are some places in the world that offer that special something extra. It can be beautiful scenery, such as that experienced driving south in the USA on Route1. Likewise, driving south in a soft top Mustang, with the California sun on your face and the sound of the ocean just below mixing 62 www.cprmag.com

with a ‘Beach Boys’ track on the AM radio. It is one of life’s rare pleasures. Or it could be something that happens only once a year. An event that is special because it has that almost mystical blend of people, place and activity that just seems to be ‘just right’. For the classic motorsport enthusiasts around

the world, there is such an event. It happens over a single weekend in the rolling Downs near the south coast of England. It is of course, the Goodwood Revival Meeting. The 2013 running of the Revival, held September 1315 at the 2.4-mile Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, was yet another example of

Above: Goodwood ‘grid girls.’ Right: John Surtees back in his ‘office.’ Below: Anthony Hansford - AC Ace and Franc HofermannKiefer - Aston Martin DB2-4 MkIII. how meticulous planning, an appreciation of detail and a large dose of enthusiasm can lead a seemingly simple concept – historic cars racing around a racetrack – to become an internationally acclaimed event. Over the weekend a capacity crowd of 150,000 enthusiasts shrugged off bouts of wind and rain to enjoy the very best that classic motor racing can offer. But what makes the Goodwood Revival so unique is the fact that the whole circuit is enveloped in a 50’s/60’s time warp for the entire weekend. Add to this the period features on and off the circuit which this year included; Les cyclistes celebrating 100 years of the Tour de France, The Great Train Robbery, The

Italian Job (the proper film not the later one) and a very moving tribute to those of all nationalities that participated in the ‘Dambusters’ raid. Just being there is entertaining, the majority of the crowd being dressed in 50’s/60’s attire, Glam Cabs transport (al a ‘Carry on Cabbie’) and

the vintage Village offering everything from car parts through hand rolled cuban cigars and seamed stockings. to race. The drivers of these being as illustrious as the cars; Tony Brooks, Stirling Moss, Dario Fanchitti, Kenny Brack, et al. The sight and sounds of such a diverse mixture of showed how multitalented many drivers of that era were. For sound, the fast parade laps of over a dozen GT40’s took some beating. These iconic cars from the mid to late 60’s evoked a time when Ford and Ferrari were fierce rivals and a Le Mans victory was the glittering prize to which they both aspired. Many of the cars returned to the track on Saturday afternoon to participate in the eagerly anticipated Whitsun Trophy. What’s better than a dozen GT40’s doing fast laps, easy, 27 GT40’s racing against each other. The first race, Freddie March Memorial Trophy, was to have been a two driver 90 minute affair featuring sports cars from 1952-55. It’s early evening start and a race into the dusk offered a rare glimpse into the nine hour races held at Goodwood during the same period. Excitement was heightened with rain starting to fall from about half distance and several drivers were given reminders of the results of over exuberance in such conditions. Regrettably the rain became heavier and the race was understandably shortened by 30 minutes. A Jaguar C-Type driven by Alex Buncombe and John Young took the final honours despite John Ure in a CooperBristol Mk2 T24/5 taking the initial lead and the two cars swapping positions in the early laps.

with Gareth a respectable second place. Race 5 - St Mary’s Trophy A real set of David and Goliath battles here amongst the 60 - 66 production saloon cars. The Ford Galaxies being dominant down the straights, but then being harried in the tighter sections by the Mini Cooper S’s. As well as a wide variety of cars, the list of drivers was equally impressive; Jochen Mass, Jackie Oliver, Steve Soper, Rauno Aalltonen, Johnny Cecotto, Christian Horner, Dave Richards, Nicolas Minassian, Derek Bell, Anthony Reid, Rob Huff, Derek Daly amongst them. In the Saturday heat Tom Kristensen won an exciting contest in a Ford Galaxie with Frank Stippler a close 66 www.cprmag.com

Race 6 - Whitsun Trophy This year the one make, two driver race, featured Ford GT40‘s which was celebrating it’s 50th anniversary, a full grid with associated prototypes added up to 27 in total. The illustrious pairing of Adrian Newey (FI designer par excellence and GT40 owner) with Kenny Brack (Indy 500 winner) took the honours at the end of the allocated forty five minutes. An early and lengthy lead set by Emanuele Pirro (one of the many Le Mans winners present over the weekend) was undone at the driver change over, with

Shaun Lynn exiting the pits onto the track behind Kenny Brack. Despite a sterling effort he was unable to catch and pass the leader and so finished second. Race 7 - Richmond Trophy Gary Pearson in a BRM P25 again lifted this years Richmond Trophy to complete a round dozen. Tony Wood fresh from his Madgwick Cup victory the day before had to settle for second in a TecMecMaserati. Although Gary was the eventual winner by some margin, up to halftime Julian Bronson’s Scarab was in the lead. With Gary a close second. Drama unfolded on lap 9 when Julian and Wolfgang Friedrichs, in a DBR4 had a coming together. This ended Wolfgangs race, Julian recovered but was unable to regain the lead after Gary went through, eventually taking fourth. Late in the race Wood was able to get past second placed Roger Wills in a Lotus-Climax 16, and kept second place to the flag. Race 8 - Chichester Cup The closing race of Saturday’s action was the The Chichester Cup. This featured Formula Junior’s from the 1958-1962

era. As the afternoon light began to fade the Elva-Ford 300 of Chris Drake took first place, with Andrew Wilkinson aboard a Lynx-Ford Mk3 second. Chris and Andrew were the front runners for all of the race. Andrew lead from the start and the two formed a close train for the first 9 laps. Chris then overtook, his faster car managing to get past the assured driving of Andrew on the curve approaching the tricky St Mary’s. Chris was then able to complete the final three laps to take the chequered flag, despite a ‘sticky moment’ entering the chicane towards the end.

Sunday The Goodwood circuit like so many others started life as a second world war RAF base. It is therefore fitting that each days activities start with a ‘dawn patrol’. The sound of Spitfires and Hurricanes filling the morning air is evocative and emotional. This combined with a fabulous display of similar and earlier period aircraft is part of the charm of the event. It’s worth noting that some of the early ‘stick and string’ aircraft have engines with less power than a modern family hatch back. Round 9 - Fordwater Trophy Sunday’s racing kicked off with the Fordwater Trophy event featuring sports and GT cars from 1955-60. An eclectic mixture of British classics; Aston Martin’s, Jaguar’s with a few lesser make e.g. a Rochdale. With continental manufacturers; Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and a couple of Corvettes from across the pond.

At the end of the 25 minutes it was David Smithies that took the win in his Austin Healey 100/6. Although starting from pole position and getting a good start David came grief at St Mary’s allowing the close following Jochen Mass in a Mercedes-Benz Gullwing 300SL into the lead and on regaining composure and the track rejoined in 8th. Over the next four laps he worked his way past the battling cars

of Malcolm Paul in a Morgan Plus Four and Max Girardo’s Ferrari 250 GT, to get onto the tail of Jochen’s 300SL. At half distance he made his move on Jochen at Madgwick and regained the lead. Thereafter he was able to assert a commanding lead and at the flag Jochen took second with Max’s 250GT just keeping a determined Malcolm’s Plus Four at bay to keep third. Round 10 - Gordon Trophy

Making a welcome return to the 2013 revival the Gordon Trophy featured Grand Prix cars from the late 50’s to early 60’s. It was at this time that Cooper made the change from front to rear engined cars, a revolution at the time, but seen as a standard requirement today. It was therefore no surprise that variations on the CooperClimax took the first five places. Although the addition of ‘others’ such as the Heron Alfa-Romeo, JBW-Maserati, and the De Tomaso-Alfa 68 www.cprmag.com

Romeo added a little spice to the mix. Miles Griffiths in a Cooper-Climax T51 led throughout. Behind him Rod Jolley - T45/51, Jonathon Hughes T53 ‘Lowline’, William Nuthall in another T53 ‘Lowline’ swapped regularly swapped place, the outcome only determined when they finally crossed the line. Crowd pleasing stuff. Race 12 - St Mary’s Trophy It was the turn of the Galaxie 500 of Bill Shepherd and Jochen Mass to take the victory in part 2 of the St

Mary’s Trophy, with second place going again to the Alfa Romeo of Alex Furani and Frank Stippler. A consistency that gained them overall victory in the combined ratings. Starting from pole position Bill built up a steady lead. The deployment of the safety car as a result of Andrew Ruhan’s dramatically rolled Mini Cooper S took away the advantage and the potential for aggregate victory. Race 14 - RAC TT Celebration For many this was the premier race of the weekend, and it had a fitting and dramatic finish. From the middle of the front row of the grid renown F1 ace Jean Alesi in a Ferrari GTO took the lead, although a penalty for ‘jump start’ dropped him down the order. With two safety car intervals the leads built by David Hart in an AC Cobra and then Chris Harris in the Lister Jaguar were quickly reduced. Despite the onset of heavy rain just before half distance the Lister

Racing legends Tony Brooks and Sir Stirling Moss. Jaguar maintained it’s lead and now had Anthony Reid in the driving seat. With only three laps to go Anthony kept the increasingly twitchy Lister ahead of second placed Simon Hadfield in the Aston Martin DP212, and that’s how it looked like finishing. However having worked his way through the field to second Simon wasn’t going to stop there. Although the rain continued to fall Simon slipped the Aston past the Jaguar and took the lead with three minutes race time left. Not one to give up easily Anthony put on his ‘drive like you stole it‘ demeanour to get the lead back. The effort resulted in spins at Lavant and the chicane exit, but he kept his second place. An emotional Simon Hadfield with co-driver Wolfgang Friedrichs thus claimed the first victory for an Aston Martin in the RAC TT event, the year in which the famous marque celebrates its centenary. Race 15 - Glover Trophy

The Glover trophy brings back a glimpse of the V8 1.5 litre F1 cars from the 1960s, with cars from the outstanding constructors of their day; Lotus, Brabham, BRM and Cooper. Andy Middlehurst led from pole position to the flag in his Lotus-Climax 25 to add another Glover Trophy victory to an already impressive tally. As the man also responsible for the restoration of the Lotus-BRM H16 a feat worthy of its own accolade, he

obviously knows the secret of driving a Lotus. Rob Hall took second place in a LotusClimax 21despite the heavy rain, and having started tenth on the grid. The sound of the race went to Joe Colasacco in the flat twelve engined Ferrari 1512, a symphony of through the rain drops. Race 16 - Sussex Trophy All too soon it was time for the last event, even though the rain continued, the majority of the crowd stayed to savour RAF crew waiting for the call.

the final race. And with powerful rear wheel drive cars from the likes of; Aston Martin, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lister and Maserati, it was bound to be an epic finale. With pole sitter Julian Majzub having to retire to the pits on the warm up lap, Anthony Reid, this time in a Jaguar D-Type stormed into the lead with Emanuele Pirro in a Lister-Jaguar ‘Knobbly’ following. Further down the field Rob Hall in a Maserati 300S was dodging puddles and finding traction to get past Emanuele on lap 3 and Anthony on lap 7. Probably feeling here we go again after his second place in the RAC TT event earlier in the afternoon, once again dug deep, and gradually closed the gap on Rob. On lap 10 Anthony reclaimed the lead into Woodcote, held on to it through the Chicane, and took the flag on lap 14, the 70 www.cprmag.com

twenty fives minutes race time having elapsed. Rob held second place, although a scary moment with the Devin-Chevrolet SS of Malcolm Gammons could have taken it away along with the paint from the side of his Maserati. And so the Goodwood Revival came to a close. Another weekend to remember of racing in a unique and very special setting. As the crowds

made their way back to the car parks, through the fun fair, occasionally stopping to view the exotic cars others had arrived in; Rolls Royces, Bentley’s, a sprinkling of Ferrari’s, classic sports cars galore. As they emerged from the time bubble of the last three days, it was back to reality. But always the thought, we can do it all again next year.

Race spec MGB Roadster at the Sywell Classic.

Held at Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire on September 28-29, the inaugural ‘Sywell Classic - Pistons & Props’ promised an eclectic mix of classic cars and aeroplanes. Simon Hazeldine reports.

I

t’s always good to hear about a brand new car show being launched, so when the ‘Sywell Classic - Pistons & Props’ was announced earlier this year, I made a note in my diary to make sure I didn’t miss it. It sounded like it would be right up my street too, since the idea behind the show was to combine the best from the vintage car world, add a dash of motorsport, and mix it together with a great selection of vintage aeroplanes. All the ingredients for a perfect show. Not only that, but there would also be a ‘live’ element to the event with historic cars racing along Sywell’s runway and aircraft displaying in the skies above. Okay, so now we’re talking! Sywell isn’t a name you would normally associate with

Excellent line-up of Mk1 Ford Escorts.

motoring, mainly because it is actually an aerodrome. Planes, not cars, are the name of the game at Sywell. The airfield can trace its history back to 1928 and it is highly regarded in aviation circles thanks to its wonderful ‘art deco’ buildings, and the adjacent Aviator Hotel which whole-heartedly embraces the ‘art deco’ and aviation theme. The cafe does

a mean bacon sandwich too! My original plan to attend on the Saturday was thwarted due to family commitments, so Sunday it had to be. Thankfully the weather was being kind, providing just a light breeze and some sunshine. Perfect flying/ driving weather; at least that would mean lots of planes and cars to look at. Ideal Venue In some respects, Sywell is an ideal venue for a show such as this, as it has in the past staged many airshows and its staff are used to dealing with large numbers of spectators. The public car park is in a field across the road 76 www.cprmag.co.uk

from the main entrance, but it is only a short walk away, and once through the gate I was confronted by a vast assortment of vehicles parked on the grass. American ‘hot rods’ mix with classic Brits, while some veteran racers spill Castrol R laden exhaust fumes into the air. I did however find

the loud music booming from the surprisingly large fun-fair rather irritating, and start to wonder if I am getting too old for this sort of thing! The showground is split up into seven main areas; the Kid’s Zone (with the irritating fun-fair!), Classic Parking, Club Parking, Autojumble, Vintage

Village and the Paddock. The classic and club parking areas were crammed full of cars, with the club area in particular staging some very impressive displays. Over 30 clubs were in attendance at the classic, including a number of local and regional clubs who were mixing with some of the bigger

names like the MG Owners’ Club and the Triumph Sports Six Club. The Vintage Village was the main retail area, where a number of trade stalls offered everything from car insurance to automotive artworks, and just about everything in between, while

the Autojumble area is selfexplanatory.

No Planes? The other major display area, between the car displays and the runway, was reserved for the classic aircraft, and should have been crammed with a wide variety of vintage aeroplanes. Unfortunately, that was far from the case. In total there were about ten aircraft parked in the display area, and a few of those were modern ‘spamcans.’ I have to say I wasn’t surprised. Being a pilot myself, and until a few years ago an owner of a vintage aeroplane, I know just how apathetic the general aviation crowd are, especially to anything new. They rarely support new ventures, and are at best ‘stuck in their ways,’ so a show November 2013 77

Triumph Spitfire MkIII. like this that was counting on a large number of wonderful flying machines turning up on the day was always asking a bit much. Pity, because the planes would have made this a very special show. There was still some top notch aerial entertainment with displays from the Trig Aerobatic Team flying a pair of 78 www.cprmag.co.uk

Minis on show. Pitts Special aircraft, and the Breitling Wing Walkers Aerial Display Team. The star of the (aerial) show was Peter Teichman in his Curtis P40M Kittyhawk (check out that nose art!) who put the World War Two fighter through an impressive aerobatic routine above a captivated Sywell crowd.

Great line-Up Back to the cars, and it has to be said that the organisers had assembled an exciting collection of cars to take part in the ‘Classic Motorsport on the Runway’ showcase. The cars were split into categories to make their respective runs down the runway, although

it was the F1 cars that attracted the biggest crowds. Among these was the bright yellow 1989 Lotus 101 in the distinctive Camel livery, and Lorina McLaughlin took the wheel of the ex-Michael Schumacher Benetton B192 to entertain the crowd. Another historic F1 car given a blast down the Sywell runway was the Adrian Newey designed Leyton House March Judd CG901 F1. Certainly all good stuff. And it wasn’t just F1 cars on the runway; there were karting legends, Prewar sports racing cars, HSA Flathead Challenge Cars, Postwar sports and saloon cars, Ferrari Challenge cars and

on the taxiway leading up to the runway, and that was fine as the spectators were close to the action and had a great view. But once the

cars turned onto the runway, they disappeared off into the distance and were too far away to be of any real interest. It was a great shame, because events like the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Cholmondeley Pageant of Power attract massive crowds every year because the spectators can get really close to the action, and I think 80

www.cprmag.co.uk

this is maybe something the organisers need to look at next year. If the spectators can be moved closer to the action, whilst still maintaining the safety standards, it would be a massive improvement, Maybe that huge empty aircraft parking area could be used? After all, if the aeroplane guys don’t want it...

Let’s Dance Back in the showground, and there was plenty of entertainment going on. In the beer tent - better known as the ‘Scarf & Goggles Marquee’ - singing outfit Belle & The Pocket Belles belted out hits from the 40s and 50s, while ‘rockabilly’ band The Hound Dogs put on several

excellent performances that gained them many new fans. Overall this was a very good attempt at bringing the worlds of classic motoring and vintage aviation together. The organisers cannot be blamed for our flying friends’ apathy, and I’m sure that next year, measures will be put in place to ensure a healthy turnout of aeroplanes. The

distant motorsport action may be a tougher problem to solve, unless the flying is just scrubbed altogether and the crowd-line moved closer to the runway/track. The rest of it was pretty much spot on first time round and the team should be congratulated on what turned out to be a very good inaugural event. Roll on next year!

Sywell Classic 2014 Next year’s Sywell Classic will be held at Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire on September 27-28, 2014, so make a note in your diary so you don’t forget it!

Cool Stuff To Spend Your Money On! Gaz Adjustable Dampers for Triumph GT6 Available from: Gaz Price: £55.03 + VAT each See: www.gazshocks.com The Triumph GT6 certainly divides opinion when it comes to handling qualities. The early cars were ‘entertaining’ to put it politely, thanks to a questionable swing-axle arrangement at the back end, where as the later cars actually drove quite well. Various upgrades and modifications have been used to try and tame the six-cylinder Triumph’s handling, and the latest of these is a set of adjustable dampers from Gaz. The shocks fit GT6 models from the 1966 Mk1 up to the Mk3 of 1973/4. The dampers can be adjusted for bump and rebound by a knob on the side of the damper body. They can be used for general road use, but they are also suitable for occasional track slalom and sprint use and can be set up for racing if you wish. The GAZ adjustable dampers for the Triumph GT6 start at £55.03 plus VAT each, so as handling modifications go, they shouldn’t break the bank.

Brake Master Cylinder for 1980-89 Minis Available from: Mini Spares Price: £73.20 inc VAT See: www.minispares.com Hertfordshire-based Classic Mini specialists Mini Spares now has stocks of genuine AP Lockheed brake master cylinders for 198089 Minis. These ‘front to rear’ dual master cylinders, were introduced in 1985 and had a stepped bore of 17.8 to 19mm. They can be used to replace any previous master cylinders from September 1978 to 1988 (when the built-in servo type master cylinder was introduced). Identifying features are the failure light switch on the reservoir cap and a yellow identification tab. This item replaces all the front to rear square type reservoir cylinders - GMC173/198 and the GMC192/195. It should also be noted that this master cylinder has two different size metric unions; the top one is 10mm and the bottom one 12mm, for the larger stepped bore size to the rear brakes, so new pipe kits will be required if replacing an earlier master cylinder. Luckily for you, Mini Spares can also supply these kits too! The one system on your car that should always be in A1 condition is your braking system, so if the master cylinder has seen better days, this is a great opportunity to replace it. 82 www.cprmag.co.uk

Norev 1/18 Peugeot 908 HDI FAP Model Available From: Diecast Legends Price: £42.66 inc VAT See: www.diecastlegends.com Diecast Legends now has stocks of the Norev 1:18 diecast model of the #10 Oreca Peugeot 908 HDI FAP which Nicolas Lapierre, Loic Duval and Olivier Panis drove to fifth place in the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours. The same team had previously taken victory at Sebring earlier that same year. 2011 also saw one of the closest finishes of the 24 Hour race in recent memory when the Peugeot team was beaten by the smallest of margins by the last running Audi R18. This model is a beautiful recreation of the French racing machine and appears accurate in every detail. We were especially impressed by the excellent headlights and the fine detailing of the aerials and windscreen wiper. These are the sort of details you usually find on much more expensive models, and at just £42.66, it is a good price for a replica of this scale and quality.

You half expect to see a shed load of rusty tractors as you walk through the uninspiring single door into the main display hall, but thankfully that is not the case. The door leads to a walkway with cars on one side, and vintage motorcycles on the other. Straight away it feels like every square inch of space has been filled with exhibits and it’s almost a November 2013 87

Little Gems However, through the gloom some little gems soon start to sparkle. For instance, a rather pretty 88 www.cprmag.co.uk

1934 BMW 315 is one of the first cars in the display line-up, and next to that is a tidy 1967 Triumph TR4A complete with ‘Surrey Top.’ Already there are a couple of points of interest on these two cars. First, there is a pair of female legs, dressed in a skirt,

protruding from under the BMW. Yes, it is a mannequin of some kind, but why it’s there is anybody’s guess! Secondly, the registration number on the TR is HMJ 746T which suggests it’s a 1978 car. Impossible of course, but the plate does

Answers on a post card please! The cars appear to be in good usable condition, but that could be because most of them are privately owned and are on loan to the museum, and not part of a collection. Next to the TR is a 1952 Lotus MkVI and then a 1929 Austin Seven Works TT Racer replica (again with female mannequin... but this time inside the car). Okay, so four cars in and a pattern is starting to form. The cars on display are actually pretty good. They are well looked after, but some of the display ‘accessories’ are a little ‘cheesy.’

Impressive Collection Next to the Austin is a 1934 MGPA Midget which was bought by the current owner in 1962 as scrap for just £3/10s. It certainly doesn’t look like scrap now and is worth a lot more

than its purchase price. Another rare machine sitting nearby is a 1922 AC Empire; an older restoration as it was rebuilt in 1965 although has apparently only had two owners from new. The list goes on; a 1927

Impressive Collection There is a nice mix of vehicles too. In among the classic and vintage cars, you can find machines from the world of motorsport, especially rallying, but one of the

more colourful cars on show is the 1987 Benetton 187-3 Formula1 car. Finished in that hideous green/yellow/red/blue/ black colour scheme used by the team in its early days, the car carries the names of Nelson Piquet and Alessandro Nannini. From high speed to super slow as opposite the F1

show in 1950 and had the distinction of lapping Montlhéry at 121mph. The car is also fitted with an extra large fuel filler cap to help speed up pit stops; a nice throw back to its competition days. Finally, there is one more car that must get a mention November 2013 93

constructed using timber from the surrounding trees and authentic traditional methods, or maybe check out the wildfowl collection which was started in 1962 and now contains 125 examples of the 147 species of wildfowl. There is also an arts and crafts studio producing handmade glass, pottery, toys and sculptures, and if you are feeling hungry, there is an excellent cafe offering lots of very tasty snacks and meals at reasonable prices. The large Georgian styled house is also open to the public and is certainly worth a look. The estate’s entrance building doubles up as a ticket office and souvenir shop which is well stocked with a mix of merchandise. Due to the nature of the business, not all of the shop’s stock is car related, but there is enough there to make it interesting. The Bentley estate hosts a number of car shows throughout the year and many car clubs use it as

Seating area outside the cafe. a destination for runs and days out. The estate’s website is next to useless for information on when the events are being held, listing only non-car related days, but their Twitter account has better details.

Diamonds In The Rough I found the Bentley Car Museum to be a bit of an odd one really. It has some very desirable cars, a number of which are incredibly rare and valuable, but the building in which they are housed is a bit of a let down. You just get the feeling that the museum isn’t the estate’s top priority and what money there is, is being spent on other areas

of the park. Still, you don’t go there to look at the building; it is the cars that you will want to see and they are well worth checking out. Think less cosseted jewels...and more diamonds in the rough. Then you wont be disappointed.

RM Auctions much anticipated sale at Hershey, Pennsylvania, on October 10-11, was hailed a success after sales totalled a strong $9,697,600, with 90% of all lots sold. Held during the renowned AACA Eastern Regional Fall Meet, the well-established auction drew a standing-room-only crowd, with numerous spirited bidding contests erupting over the course of the two days. There was a strong international flavour too, with bidders from 17 different countries taking part in the sale. “We’re thrilled with the results from this year’s Hershey sale,” said Gord Duff, Car Specialist at RM Auctions. “Since its launch in 2007, our Hershey sale has enjoyed strong support from the collector community. This year’s event was no exception, with high levels of client interest resulting in numerous lots exceeding expectations.” Top sale honours went to the catalogue’s cover car, a beautifully restored 1933 Chrysler CL Imperial Convertible Roadster, which was one of only nine built and one of just six known survivors. A multiple-awardwinning example from the most sought after and renowned year of production, the rare ’33 Chrysler attracted tremendous pre-sale interest, resulting in a fierce bidding war in the room, before selling for a respectable 100 www.cprmag.co.uk

Rolls-Royce Phantom II Is Star ‘Barn Find’ At H&H Duxford Sale

Top selling ‘barn find’ was this 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental.

H&H Auctions Duxford Sale Duxford, UK. October 16, 2013. There was something of a feeding frenzy for RollsRoyce and Bentley collectors at the H&H Auctions sale at Duxford Airfield in Cambridgeshire on October 16, when a collection of ‘barn find’ cars from the two prestigious manufacturers went ‘under the hammer.’ The condition of the cars varied tremendously, with some looking solid and complete, while others looked like the stuff restoration nightmares are made of! Perhaps the highlight of the ‘barn find’ collection was a 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental which fetched more than double its estimate at £62.720. The car had once been used in the film Red Shoes, and had been on the road as recently as 1996, but now requires full restoration after being stored in poor conditions. Some of the cars were offered without reserve, including a rather forlorn 1935 Bentley 31/2-litre Sports Saloon that sold for £24,640 and an attractive

Le Mans 2013 The Official Review Of The World’s Greatest Endurance Race Format: PAL Running Time: 240 minutes Price: £16.99 Available From: www.dukevideo.com

Well, it is that time of year again. The dust has settled over the French countryside and that epic 24 hours in June is now just a distant memory. Thankfully every autumn sees the release of DVD which recounts the ‘24 Heures Du Mans’ in all its greulling glory. Sadly, this year’s race would be remembered for all the wrong reasons, as it claimed the life of Aston Martin driver Allan Simonsen just after the start of the race. Still, the show must go on, and Le Mans 2013 proved to be just as exciting as ever with Audi sweeping to their third consecutive overall victory ahead of the impressive Toyota hybrid machine. There was plenty of interest throughout the field with an astonishing 41 teams finishing the 24 hour assault on the Circuit de la Sarthe. This officially sanctioned DVD contains all of the highlights from the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans, an important year as it saw the race celebrate its 90th anniversary. The race was run in some of the worst conditions in recent memory, pushing drivers and their cars to the very limits and making it the most tense and dramatic meeting for many years. As expected the LMP1 class came down to an epic duel between the all-conquering Audi R18 e-tron Quattros and Toyota’s innovative TS030 hybrid. Through torrential rain, André Lotterer led the charge for Audi until a crank sensor problem forced a lengthy pit stop and threw the race wide open once more. Alan McNish, Kristensen and Duval pushed hard but Audi and Toyota were fighting tooth-and-nail to the very last lap. In the LMP2 class OAK Racing was the dominant force with their Morgan-Nissan cars proving very potent endurance racers. Bertrand Baguette, Martin Plowman and Ricardo Gonzalez put in

104 www.cprmag.co.uk

an impressive performance given the extreme conditions encountered to prevail over team mates Pla, Brundle and Hansson by just one lap after 24 hours of full-on racing. Porsche had reason to celebrate a special Le Mans landmark in the GTE classes as victory in both Pro and Amateur divisions took their overall Le Mans victory tally to 100. As usual, a great package which vividly recalls the race and is touchingly dedicated to the memory of Allan Simonsen who lost his life during the race.

Speedy Stories & Revving Reads! Cunningham : The Passion, The Cars, The Legacy Author: Richard Harman Price: £225.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 978 1 85443 2605 Available From: www.motorbooks.co.uk Make no mistake, this isn’t a cheap book. At £225.00 a copy, it is going to have to be pretty special to shift any copies at all, as that price means it is never going to be an ‘impulse’ purchase. Luckily, special it is. Briggs Cunningham was an American entrepreneur with a passion for motor racing. He was a driver, innovator and team owner during the halcyon days of motor sport back in the 1950s and 1960s. This impressively detailed book now tells the enchanting story of the man, the races and or course, the cars. Granted unprecedented access to the previously unpublished archive material by the Cunningham family, the author has managed to chart the history of nearly all the cars owned and raced by Cunningham. His passion was for sports car racing, or road racing, as it was often called in the USA. It was a form of racing dominated by European drivers and manufacturers and American races were largely overlooked. That was until 1953, when the newly-established World Championship for Sports Cars staged a race in Sebring, Florida. The event attracted all the top European teams yet it was Briggs Cunningham who took the victory, forcing the previously negative European press to acknowledge that American motorsport should now be taken seriously. Cunningham’s main obsession was the iconic Le Mans 24 Hour Race in France, an event which he believed could be won by American drivers using American cars. However, it wasn’t until 1960 when that vision would become a reality when his team ran Chevrolet Corvettes at Le Mans. During his lifetime, Cunningham had owned and raced a multitude of cars; some of which he kept. In his retirement, he assembled them all together in a collection near his home in California. He spent his time there, with the cars and his extensive library of literature and memorabilia, welcoming visitors and organised groups of enthusiasts. This book took over seven years to complete, and it shows. The attention to detail is staggering, as are the 1,500 photographs, most of which have not been seen before. If you like sports car racing history, or are an avid fan of the Le Mans 24 Hour Race and its history, this book will make a wonderful addition to your collection. The Alfa Romeo DOHC Engine High-Performance Manual Author: Jim Kartalamakis Price: £35.00 Format: Paperback. ISBN: 9781845840198 Available From: www.veloce.co.uk Ten years have passed since the original edition of this book was published, but Alfa Romeo enthusiasts everywhere are preserving, modifying and racing these cars more than ever before. Throughout this time, the author in true ‘Alfista’ fashion, never stopped looking for and trying new techniques to increase the power, overall performance and reliability of Alfas and their engines. This book is the result of much research and also first-hand experience gained through many Alfa rwd model projects, from the 105 series to the last of the 75 models. There is a lot of completely new information here regarding TwinSpark Cylinder head modifications, ‘big-brake’ upgrades, LSD adjustment procedure and electrical system improvements, along with numerous flow-bench diagrams and dyno plots. Among other topics covered are: a unique LSD building procedure, inductive distributor recurving, electrical system modifications and many other techniques aimed at boosting power. The book is illustrated throughout with mainly colour photos and the author writes in a simple, easy-to-understand way which is vitally important for getting technical information across accurately. Not exactly a coffee table book, (unless you are a real Alfa ‘tech geek’) but a ‘must have’ for any Alfa enthusiast who wants to get the maximum performance from their engine.

www.cprmag.co.uk The Road Ferraris : The Complete Story Author: Anthony Pritchard RRP: £54.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9781844256709 Available From: www.chaters.co.uk This beautifully presented book provides a comprehensive record of all Ferraris built for the road - production and prototype - from the Tipo 166 Inter of 1948 to the latest Tipo 612 Scaglietti and its contemporaries. During that time there have been approximately 80 different touring Ferrari models and this book provides comprehensive details on them all, where necessary investigating the sometimes blurred distinction between pure touring models and competition models of the same car. This book oozes quality and uses a mix of black & white and colour photographs to illustrate the pages. The older historical photos are especially pleasing and the high quality glossy paper really helps bring the photos to life. The author has written in a very factual way and there is certainly no shortage of facts and anecdotes which true Ferrari enthusiasts will revel in. I guess what I am trying to say is that it makes a superb reference book for anyone studying the history of Ferrari road cars, but it is perhaps a little too factual to be considered an entertaining read. That said, much of the Ferrari story is truly fascinating and most of it is here in this book somewhere, so it certainly wouldn’t be out of place lurking somewhere on your ‘coffee table.’

How to Power Tune MGB 4-Cylinder Engines - New Updated & Expanded Edition! Author: Peter Burgess RRP: £27.50 Format: Paperback. ISBN: 978-1-84584615-2 Available From: www.veloce.co.uk When it comes to historic racing, the humble MGB makes an ideal first car to ‘cut your teeth on.’ It is also a superb platform on which to build your own unique race car, tailored to your own specific tastes, and of course, budget. However, even though the ‘B’ is a very basic car, it is still easy to spend a lot of money and see very little improvement if don’t actually know what you are doing, so before you reach for your chequebook, it makes sense to learn from the experts. One way of doing that is to hang around the paddocks at historic race meetings, ask questions, and generally make a nuisance of yourself. The easier solution is to buy a copy of this book which tells you just about everything you need to know. It is written by Peter Burgess who runs a well-known tuning business in Derbyshire, England. He’s been working with MGs since 1978 and his engine building expertise has produced many race wins for MGBs. The book focuses on the heart of the MGB - the B-Series engine - and covers in detail just about every possible modification that can be made to the powerplant to extract maximum horsepower. Many of the modifications are fairly obvious, like polishing and porting the cylinder head or fitting a performance exhaust system and tubular manifold to improve gas flow, but the author also goes on to reveal those little gems of wisdom which only come with years of experience. Covering the ‘top ten’ of engine tuning techniques in detail, Peter Burgess goes yet further – from handy ‘power recipes’ for getting the performance that you want, to indepth instructions on improving handling with suspension, brake and tyre upgrades. Detailed appendices are included, providing useful formulae, along with cam timing tables for Piper and Kent cams, and a host of performance and tuning data to help you with your tuning. This is a great book if you are serious about tuning your MGB for track use, but many of the ideas can be used to get a little extra performance out of a road car, and that’s never a bad thing!

Be Wise When You Advertise! When you advertise always take steps to guard against identity fraud. Do not place personal details in your adverts. If you are selling a car, remember that there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there who will use every trick in the book to part you from your car or your money. Take sensible precautions. If you are buying a car; make sure you check it thoroughly. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! Never meet a vendor on the street or at service stations. Research the type of car you are buying so you know what to look for. If you are unsure, take an expert along with you.
