Editorial Can you believe it’s February already? Seems like only yesterday we were hanging the tinsel up in the CPR office. However, one good indication, well two actually, that the new automotive season is well and truly underway are featured in this very issue. Much the same as the first Cuckoo heralds the start of spring, the Autosport International show at the NEC, Birmingham kickstarts the new racing season. This year’s show featrured brand new cars being unveiled for the first time, F1 cars, Le Mans legends, plenty of glamour and lots of bargains too. We have a full report on page 20, so make sure you don’t miss it. The other indication that the new year is well under way comes from the other side of the Atlantic and is of course the Detroit Motor Show. We have a full report from this mega-show too, where you can read about the new Porsche 911 Targa, as well as the latest versions of the Corvette, Viper and Mustang. All iconic names, and according to the manufacturers, all now better than ever before! Besides that, we have a fantastic tale from the world of historic racing where our own tame lady racing driver Sarah Bennett-Baggs gets her hands on an Austin Healey 100M and takes on one of the toughest races in Portugal - the Algarve Classic in Portimao. And that’s not all! Our roving snapper Chris McEvoy headed south (though not as far south as he wanted!) to savour the delights of historic rallying at Brands Hatch in Kent. If you like to see your classics all wet and muddy, this article wont disappoint you! As always, we hope you enjoy reading this issue of Classic, Performance & Retro! Drive safe!

Regent St Show Returns

Record Breaking Show Returns To Regent St. After the huge success of last year’s biggest ever Regent Street Motor Show, the date for the 2014 automotive extravaganza in Central London has been announced as Saturday 1 November. Once again the world famous West End shopping street will be closed to traffic for what’s firmly established as the UK’s largest free-to-view motor show. In 2013, the traffic-free zone was extended to stretch from Piccadilly Circus right up to Oxford Circus for the very first time. The expansion proved massively popular with in excess of 400,000 visitors savouring a mile of sparkling displays which featured no fewer than 300 iconic cars from past, present and future eras. “The Regent Street Motor Show is now a firm fixture in London’s calendar of events attracting visitors from around the UK and overseas,” said Annie Walker, Director of the Regent Street Association. “The event has developed over the years and visitors now come to expect not only the fantastic display of pre-1905 veteran cars, but an exhibition of vehicles from the past present and future. With the consistent high standard and quality of the event each year, it is no surprise that it attracts thousands motoring enthusiasts and shoppers to Regent Street on the day. Timed to coincide with the annual running of the Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, the 2014 Regent Street Motor Show – a Royal Automobile Club event – will again include a large number of the amazing pre-1905 cars in the coveted EFG Concours d’Elegance. This grand arrary of veteran cars will then be heading off early from Hyde Park the following morning (Sunday 2 November) as they make their way to the Sussex coast. www.regentstreetmotorshow.com

Cornish Classic!

Cornish Classic Festival Returns Good news for car fans in Cornwall! The 4th St Mawes Classic Car Festival will be staged on May 5-9, and this year the event will revolve around the theme of ‘Forgotten Cornwall.’ The show has previously attracted a wide range of classic and performance cars and is popular for its organised tours of the local Cornish countryside. This year there will be visits to picturesque locations such as Mousehole, Geevor, the Landhydrock and the famous lost gardens at Heligan. The main part of the event centres around the St Mawes Concours d’Elegance which will be held in the village on May 8, and the festival will conclude with a dinner at St Mawes Castle which is regarded for being one of the best-preserved coastal artillery fortresses from Henry VIII’s era. Last year the show attracted some high-calibre cars along with some celebrity names. Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason had his ex-Carrera Panamericana Ferrari 250MM at the event while Paul Stewart participated in his concours-winning Mercedes-Benz 300SL ‘Gullwing.’ Entry forms for the event are available via the official website: www.nearwaterevents.co.uk/classic-car-festival

Speed Trials Are Go!

Brighton Speed Trials To Go Ahead In 2014 The Brighton Speed Trials will once again go ahead this year, thanks to a campaign which generated a 12,400-strong petition. The local council had threatened to withdraw permission for the trials which have run annually for over 100 years but has now given the go-ahead for the event to take place. The council initially rejected the application to stage this year’s event saying it had safety fears following the death of sidecar rider Charlotte Tagg and serious injury of Roger Hollingshead in 2012 trials. The petition and the campaign to save the trials was run by the Brighton & Hove Motor Club who organise the event who used social media and local TV and newspaper appeals to raise awareness of the campaign and petition. The speed trials feature a wide range of cars and motorcycles and is an entertaining day-out for all the family. The cars race over a quarter of a mile, along Brighton’s historic beachfront on Madeira Drive. The event is scheduled to take place on September 6; see the website for more information. P1 On Display

First Porsche Unveiled At Museum The first car ever designed and built by Ferdinand Porsche has gone on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart as part of its fifth anniversary celebrations. The car is a far cry from the high performance machines of today and was built in 1898. It is usually referred to as the P1 but its official name is the Egger-Lohner electric vehicle C2 phaeton. The vehicle is completely original and has never been restored. It was also one of the first cars registered in Austria, first taking to the road on June 26, 1898. It was driven around mostly in the city of Vienna, possibly becuase it only had a range of 50 miles, although it did have a Lohner alternating body allowing it to be used in both summer and winter. In 1899 the car appeared in a Berlin Motor Show and later it took part in a 25 mile race for electric vehicles. The P1 was unveiled in front of an audience of invited guests at the museum by Dr Wolfgang Porsche and Matthias Müller on January 31. www.porsche.com/museum

Royal Venue Chosen

Venue Chosen For 2014 Concours Of Elegance

This year’s venue for the travelling Concours of Elegance, the show which takes place at a different royal palace each year, will be Hampton Court in Surrey. The event will be staged on September 5-7, and will host up to 60 of the very best cars from the classic car world, many of which have never been seen in the UK before. The automotive treasures will be displayed in the Fountain Gardens on the East side of the historic Hampton Court Palace. Organisers of the event also hope to beat the £250,000 total raised for charity at last year’s show. This will be the third time the Concours has been held and each year it grows in popularity and the organisers say it is the only automotive event in the world to enjoy an authentic Royal Palace as its backdrop, with keen Royal motoring enthusiast HRH Prince Michael of Kent as the event’s Patron. The 2014 Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace will be open to the public on Saturday 6 September and Sunday 7 September, with adult entry tickets available to purchase from Saturday 1 March from £25 per person per day. Profumo Jaguar For Sale

Infamous ‘Profumo Affair’ Jaguar XK150 Offered For sale One of the most infamous cars in British political history is about to go ‘under the hammer’ at Silverstone Auctions Race Retro sale on February 22-23. The car is the 1959 Jaguar XK150 that played a part in the 1963 Profumo Affair scandal. The Jaguar belonged to Dr Stephen Ward, who by means of Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies, was charged with living off the earnings of prostitution following the disgraced resignation of the then secretary of State of State for War - John Profumo. The car is expected to fetch in the region of £55-65,000 at the auction. Silverstone Auctions MD Nick Whale said: “Few Jaguars can boast such a fascinating ownership record and one that seemingly defined the era when it was first driven. Racing Legend For Sale

Historic Ferrari 375 Plus Provanance Confirmed The long-disputed history of an ex-works Ferrari racer has finally been resolved, meaning that the car can now be offered for sale. After years of uncertainty and doubt, the ex-Umberto Maglioli Ferrari 375 Plus was revealed to 20 specially invited VIPs at Bonhams’ in London on January 9. Just five of these 4.9-litre 375 Plus were built contend the 1954 World Sports Car Championship and they became one of Ferrari’s most feared sports racers of the period. The construction featured a lightweight all-alloy body combined with a 330bhp engine and the cars were driven to victory at Le Mans by Gonzalez and Maglioli, and also the Carrera Pan Americana. Car 0384 AM being offered by Bonhams was the 1954 works entry driven by Maglioli in the Mille Miglia, then piloted to victory by the great Argentine star, Froilan Gonzalez, at Silverstone. In its last factory team outing it was co-driven by Maglioli and Paolo Marzotto in that year’s Le Mans 24-Hour race. The car then passed to well known amateur racer and Kleenex heir, Jim Kimberly, in the USA, before being sold to Howard Hively, an Ohio Cadillac dealer, in 1955. He campaigned the car enthusiastically at Watkins Glen, Nassau and Sebring, as well as in the 1957 Cuban Grand Prix. Howard Hively then sold the Ferrari to Ohio resident and nuclear physicist, Karl Kleve. It later passed to noted Belgian Ferrari importer, racer and close friend of Enzo Ferrari, Jacques Swaters, founder of the highly successful Ecurie Francochamps racing team. Jacques Swaters had the car fully restored in Modena. Long-running title disputes over the car broke out between the Kleve and Swaters families, which Bonhams has helped to resolve. The car will be sold with a spare period works block engine and its original body panels, still bearing traces of the 1957 Cuban Grand Prix race colors. Philip Kantor, Bonhams head of motor cars for mainland Europe, said: “We are honored to have been chosen to sell this wonderful car, which represents a key early stage in the Ferrari racing legend. It is very rare indeed for a Ferrari team works car with continuous history and undisputed identity to come to the market for sale by public auction. Maseratis At Donington...

Special Maserati Race For Donington Historic Festival To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Maserati, Motor Racing Legends (MRL) and the Maserati Club UK are staging a historic Maserati race at this year’s Donington Historic Festival on May 3-5. Running as a double header over two of the Festival’s three days, the Maserati Centenary Trophy is for all types of Maseratis and OSCAs built before 1966. This means that the race will be open to all pre-’66 singleseaters and sports cars, including all pre-War cars and cars powered by Maserati or OSCA engines. Michael O’Shea, Racing Co-Ordinator for the Maserati Club UK, said: “The Maserati Centenary Trophy is the realisation of the Maserati Club UK’s ambition to hold such a special race in Britain to celebrate 100 years of Maserati. The challenge of marking this important occasion was taken up by Motor Racing Legends and the venue will be the magnificent Donington Park circuit during the Donington Historic Festival. “It is entirely appropriate that this celebration is held at Donington Park because Maseratis have been racing there since the circuit opened in the 1930s. Hall Of Fame Inductees

Four More For Legends ‘Hall Of Fame’ Racing legends Alain Prost, James Hunt, John McGuinness and Ross Brawn became the latest inductees to the Motor Sport Hall of Fame, at a star-studded ceremony at London’s historic Royal Opera House on January 29. Now in its fifth year, the Hall of Fame annually unites a veritable who’s who from the world of motor racing. World champions and race-winners from far and wide attended the glittering 2014 edition as the achievements of great drivers, riders and engineers were acknowledged and honoured in suitably auspicious surroundings in the heart of fashionable Covent Garden. Particularly moving was the presentation of James Hunt’s award collected by his son Tom. “This is a huge honour, and I’m sure dad would have absolutely loved it,” said Tom Hunt, who collected his late father’s award from former British Grand Prix winner Johnny Herbert. “He was a very unique person, and for the family, it is very special to see him being held up alongside some truly great names. Toyota To Run Two Hybrid Cars In 2014 WEC Campaign Toyota Racing plans to push the limits of hybrid powertrain technology in motorsport with its confirmed participation in the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship. It has entered two cars for the new WEC season, a calendar that includes the Le Mans 24 Hours. The Le Mans race organiser, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, is expected to confirm the full entry list on 13 February. For the third year running the driver line-up will comprise Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapiere, Kazuki Nakajima, Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Stéphane Sarrazin. They are joined by a new test and reserve driver, Mike Conway. They will have a new car at their disposal: the TS040 Hybrid prototype has been designed in line with new sporting regulations intended to keep the WEC and Le Mans at the forefront of the development of roadrelevant racing technology. The car will take to the track for the first time at the WEC official test session on 28 - 29 March. The TS030 Hybrid established Toyota Racing as a pioneer in the field of hybrid powertrains for motorsport and its successor takes that technology to a new level. With the addition of an Aisin AW motor/generator on the front axle, in combination with the Denso unit at the rear, the Toyota Hybrid System - Racing - now provides all-wheel drive. Both units deliver additional braking power and recover braking energy, transferred to a super-capacitor. During acceleration, the motor/generators reverse their function, acting as motors to deliver a significant power boost. The four-wheel drive hybrid power is matched to a petrol V8 engine. Both elements have been developed at the Higashifuji technical centre, where next-generation Toyota road car technology is also being tested. Like its predecessors, the TS040 serves as a real-world test bench for Toyota’s latest hybrid concepts. The TS040 Hybrid’s chassis has been designed, developed and built by Toyota Motorsport in Cologne. Its advanced aerodynamics and lightweight design represent a major evolution of the previous TS030 Hybrid. Adhering to the competition’s new technical regulations, the car is 10cm narrower and comes fitted with new safety features, including wheel tethers and a rear crash box. Sunbeam Tiger Owners’ Club

Sunbeam Club Gets Ready To Celebrate Tiger’s 50th The Sunbeam Tiger Owners’ Club is planning a series of special events to mark the 50th anniversary of the British built, American powered V8 sports car. Based on Sunbeam’s successful Alpine, the Tiger was fitted with a 260cu/in Ford engine and the first cars went on sale during 1964. More than 7,000 were built over the following three years with the MkII version being upgraded with the fitting of a 289 engine. INTERNATIONAL: The Racing Car Show This year’s Autosport International show kicked off the 2014 motorsport season with plenty of glitz and glamour. Simon Hazeldine was there to see what was on offer.

E

ach year, the Autosport International show at the NEC, Birmingham, acts as a ‘curtain raiser’ for the forthcoming motorsport season. It gives teams and drivers an opportunity to do a little ‘shopping’ before the racing starts, and it gives the exhibitors a chance to do some serious business with an estimated £1.07 billion worth of new business being generated at last year’s show. While some of the industry’s big names like Porsche and Lotus have large eye-catching stands, it is often the smaller manufacturers that grab the headlines with a well timed unveiling of a new model or similar grand announcement. That was very much the case this year with big reveals from the likes of Zenos Cars, Sinful and Radical Racing. The first name in that list 20 www.cprmag.co.uk

certainly created a stir since it gave us the first public viewing of the opening model from Zenos Cars, the ultra-light Zenos E10 sports car. Founded by former Caterham Cars CEO Ansar Ali and COO Mark Edwards, the track focused yet road legal two-seater is powered by a mid-mounted 2.0-litre Ford engine producing 200bhp. Weighing only 650kg, it delivers a power-to-weight ratio of 300bhp/tonne and covers 0-60mph in under five

seconds. Its styling didn’t exactly excite me, but this is a track car, so handling and performance are much higher up the list than all-round good looks. The E10 is the first of what will eventually become a three-car range from the Zenos Cars, and is available now for £24,995, or £28,995 if you decide to go for the special Launch Edition. The car unveiled on the Sinful stand - the Sin R1 - is actually a road legal development of

the company’s race car that made its debut at last year’s Autosport show. Unfortunately, the car on display was just a hollow mock-up with blacked out windows, so visitors were really none the wiser as to what they would actually get for their money. The £60,000 supercar is a joint venture between British company Pro Formance Metals and Sin Car GmbH in Germany. It was produced following strong interest in the race car, which

Radical has achieved this by replacing the standard 3.7-litre V6 engine with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre Ford EcoBoost unit producing 454bhp. The new engine has also pushed the RXC’s top speed from 175mph to 185mph. Of course, performance stats like these

lifted the wraps on its new Elise S Cup R at the show, a car that is designed to provide an ‘entrylevel’ route into the track day Eastern Promise scene. Another East Anglian The Cup R uses the same manufacturer showing off a supercharged mid-mounted new product at the show was transverse 1.8-litre engine Lotus. The Norfolk-based outfit as the Elise S road car, and produces 217bhp and a sixspeed manual gearbox. It also carries a brand new aerodynamics package which includes a front splitter, rear diffuser, floor extensions and a new rear wing. The Elise S Cup R will sell for £52,838 and while Lotus expects to sell a number of the cars here in the UK, most of the cars built will head to the rapidly growing Asian market. don’t come cheap, and the new Radical will be offered for around £129,000.

Revamp Needed? Of course, Autosport International is much more than a bunch of new cars being unveiled. It also incorporates the Performance Car Show in association with Pistonheads and Autocar. This particular part of the show seems to get worse each year and surely its only a matter of time before it gets canned altogether. It was a mix of car club stands, simulators and kit cars, and most of the exhibitors seemed to be standing around looking bored. Sure, there were a few nice cars on display; the Lamborghini Scaled down version of the famous Dunlop Bridge.

Aventador which had been ‘breathed on’ by performance car specialists Oakley Design. Among the modifications added to the Lambo were a massive carbon fibre rear wing, new door sill plates, a custom

interior, yellow X-bracing struts above the engine and gloss black wheels. However, the one aspect that really made it stand out was the flat-chrome wrap that shrouded the bodywork. Truly outstanding. Another part of the show which sadly failed to live up to expectation was the Live Action Arena. Apart from some impressive acrobatic motorbikes, the rest you could see in just about any supermarket car park on a Friday night. displaying cars from each participating team, but close inspection revealed that very few of the cars on show were actually from last season. Consequently, most of the onlookers could be heard trying to guess what year each of the cars was from.

One of the other fun aspects of Autosport is trying to spot the various personalities who are attending the show. This year, names like John Surtees, Adrian Sutil and Martin Brundle put in an appearance, while the ‘Kings of Le Mans’ - Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen were spotted signing autographs and chatting with visitors. John Surtees’ appearance coincided with the 50th anniversary of his Formula1 World Championship with Ferrari, and to mark the

Karts on display. occasion there was a large dedicated display featuring some of the cars and motorcycles raced by Surtees during his impressive career. Perhaps the most notable of these was the 1964 Ferrari 158, in which the British driver secured the World Championship.

It was the 1972 Championship-winning Lotus Type 72 that was driven by Emerson Fittipaldi. The following year, the car was written off by Fittipaldi when he crashed heavily in qualifying February 2014 25

It is an amazing project which will no doubt test the skills of the Classic Team Lotus engineering staff, but all the effort will be worth it to see the car back out on the track again where it belongs. The road-going version features zero-emissions as its 100% bio-diesel but still produces 395bhp and a top speed of over 190mph. The new car features a 6.6 litre turbo diesel V8 engine, a 6-speed fully automatic gearbox, Alcon 400mm steel vented brake discs at the front and 380mm steel vented discs at the rear, both with

6 pot Alcon calipers, tilt and slide steering column, PAS, air conditioning and electric windows. Another important feature on the car is the stainless steel chassis which is immensely strong, very stiff and warranted for 100 years against rust. As far as the race car is concerned it is being viewed not only as a reliable, economical, under stressed ‘sprint’ machine but with the road car returning a

proven 68 mpg at a steady 70mph and a range of around 2,000 miles between fill ups, it is clearly going to be an intriguing prospect in longer distance racing. For practical purposes the race cars will run on normal pump diesel or bio diesel. The road cars are designed to run on 100% bio diesel. on the Saturday and Sunday. The Engineering show is where some of the serious money changes hands at this event and some of the products on display were simply breathtaking. Over 600 leading manufacturers and 28,000 industry guests visited the show buying up everything from complete cars and chassis to pistons and brake discs. The Festival Zone on the last two days of the show was unimpressive by comparison, but it did feature a stunning McLaren MP4-12C wearing Police markings and blue flashing lights. Issuing cars like this to our Police forces would have two notable consequences; first, our Council Tax would probably double overnight to pay for the new Mclarens, and secondly, future episodes of ‘Road Wars’ would become much

more exciting! Luckily for the ‘villains,’ this was just a mockup and there are no plans to issue them to any UK police forces.

Resting On Its Laurels? Overall I thought that this year’s Autosport International show was okay. Maybe even good. But it didn’t exactly blow me away, and there are some aspects of the show namely the Live Action Arena,

the Performance Car Show and the Festival Zone - that need a revamp. I thought that maybe I was being a tad harsh on the show, but a look at some of the internet forums and bulletin boards on the web just confirmed what I was thinking. Hopefully next year the show will get a bit of a make-over and it will be like the Autosport shows of old. Now they really were entertaining. February 2014 29

Aston Martin DB5 Convertible

The Aston Martin DB5 is easily one of the most iconic cars of the 20th Century and today the type is in great demand with collectors and investors alike. Phil Sullivan takes a look at a stunning DB5 Convertible.

T

he Aston Martin DB5 must be one of the most written about cars in automotive history. Indeed, we have featured it in the pages of this magazine on a number of occasions and make no apology for that as it easily ranks as one of the 32 www.cprmag.co.uk

all time greats of the classic car world. It’s not difficult to see why either. The DB5 just looks right from every angle. The car is perfectly proportioned, has curves in all the right places and just oozes class from every welded seam of its

Rarity & Value Like the DB4, only a small number of convertible cars were produced, with 123 of the 1,023 DB5s built leaving the factory in ‘roofless’ format. Obviously, that alone makes them incredibly rare cars today and they are highly sought after by collectors and

investors. But sit a bunch of car enthusiasts around a table and ask what they think of the DB5 convertible and you might be surprised. It turns out that despite its rarity and value, most car fans prefer the drop-dead gorgeous looks and flowing lines of the coupé, with some even going as far as saying that removing the roof completely ruined the car! That might be a tad harsh, but you can see where they are coming from. The car that we used for our feature was kindly supplied by Aston Martin specialist RS Williams (01932 868377) in Surrey, and is being offered for sale at £950,000. Compare that to a DB5 Coupé - finished in the highly sought after ‘James Bond’ Silver Birch being offered by the same dealer for £575,000 and you can see that the Convertibles

thinking that the DB5 is an agile machine with supercar performance and rally car handling, yet the truth is quite a long way from that. The Aston is a ‘tourer’ in the truest sense of the word. It wallows along gracefully, its soft suspension absorbing all but the very worst potholes

that it encounters on its travels. It carries its occupants in comfort over long distances and its engine will propel it along at very respectable speeds. But should you decide to start flinging it into hairpin corners as you navigate Italy’s famous Stelvio Pass, it will all end in tears. It’s a refined

Winter Rally At Brands Hatch A stunning collection of classic rally cars assembled at Brands Hatch circuit in kent on January 12, for the MGJ Winter Stages. Chris McEvoy went along to see the action.

was at home in Hertfordshire idly gazing through the window at the cold, wet, windswept landscape when the phone rang. ‘Would I like to cover a rally stage in the south in January?’ I immediately thought wow, fame at last! Ford Escort Mk1 at Brands. The Dakar Rally, although even I know this isn’t held anywhere near Dakar anymore. It’s held across Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. I recall watching it on TV and meeting the amazing people from Race2Recovery team who completed it last year. Packed Programme On passing through the entrance at Brands Hatch, the various paddock areas were a hive of activity. Vehicles being prepared, the sounds of engines being coaxed into life, the merry banter of the competitors, and the occasional curses as a spanner slipped from a nut and warm soft human skin met cold unyielding metal. The day’s event consisted of eight ‘stages’ which utilised varying combinations of the Brands facilities and included the;

The overall lead changed several times due to a puncture, several excursions into the gravel, and was held by a wide variety of vehicles from a Ferrari 308 through Ford escort Mk1’s resplendent with a brace of front mounted Cibie’s to a Vauxhall Nova. Racing from the early morning with frost still lying on the track, hiding in the shadows to catch the unwary through to racing into the into the dark as the evening mist descended. It was fascinating to be able to walk through the areas being using as the paddock and to talk to the drivers/navigators and the service crews, and to hear

their merry banter mixing in with the sounds of club hammers performing alfresco body reshaping. All of this was done in the open; the most luxurious having an awning, most just had a ground sheet and making do. No large motorhomes and corporate hospitality areas for them, this honest down to earth club racing.

Green took outright wins for the first four stages and were in the overall lead after the first six stages. However a puncture exiting Druids on the way through Graham Hill bend on the penultimate stage, as was a rally stage they had to stop and fix it themselves, dropped them way down. Hot on their bumper were several other driver/ navigator teams. The 2013 event winners Dean Thomas/Mark Burt in the Davrian Dav-Tec along with Royston and Bridge Carey in a Renault Clio 172 were eagerly snapping at their heels. In the rest of the pack several teams found that although the frost had gone from the track, care was still needed. A few had interesting moments, particularly, around Druids, with the Escort Mk2 of James Slaughter/Declan Dear giving the tyre wall a light bruise but leaving the car with a dent that might need more than a ‘polish’ to rectify. Similarly the crowd watching from the Rally gallery saw plenty of sideways action on the short but often steep and slippery section. Although Carey and Carey won stages five, six and seven they weren’t able to gain enough time over Dean Thomas and Mark Burt. With a joint fastest time on stage 2 and an outright win in the dark on stage 8, they took the overall lead, with Carey and Carey as runners up. When asked for his views on the days Dean praised

his co-driver and the event organisers and exclaimed that as this was his first finish in 12 months he was shocked and delighted to have won. A dramatic and fitting finale to all participants and, giving a knowledgeable and friendly crowd a good full days event. The event was organised by the Chelmsford Motor Club and for this year

Sun, Sea, Sand & Speeding Fines Not the usual format for a weekend of classic racing but our tame lady racing driver Sarah Bennett-Baggs recently visited Portimao for the Algarve Classic Festival and got more than she bargained for!

hen Austin Healey 100 specialists Race 100 asked if I would like to co-drive a 1955 Healey 100M at Portimao in the Algarve Classic, I didn’t have to think very long about it. In fact I jumped at the chance! I may even have agreed just slightly before the brain had a chance to think through the consequences of driving a car 20 years older than my regular steed; a relatively modern 70’s Porsche. Just before the car was sent-off on the 1,300 mile trip to southern Portugal, we visited the Welsh test track at Landow for quick blast to introduce me to the 50’s racing style and the Healey. 50 www.cprmag.co.uk

Meanwhile Mike and I hopped on an easyJet flight down to Faro, checking in to our beach resort hotel at Praia Da Rocha, less than three hours after leaving London, now you don’t get that at a wet and windy Snetterton! arrived at the sunny circuit at the same time on the Thursday in time to unload the car and do a few test laps. Now, we knew the circuit was long and technical but what a place! Nothing really prepared us for this four mile motorcross style track with its 15 corners, three blind crests, multiple hairpins, adverse camber corners, and a nasty drop-away corner which we nick-named Paddock Hill bend. Trying to

find the fastest line through this rollercoaster layout with a car that mostly wants to drive sideways wasn’t as easy as you might think! Needless to say, I left the track on Thursday evening feeling a bit daunted by the task ahead.

Heavy Workload The race we had entered was the Motor Racing Legends 50’s Sport Car race. A two driver race going into the

Stop & Go! It was all going so well, until somehow I received a drive through penalty for speeding in the pit lane after the driver change. Now, I am no stranger to pitstops having done several years in Britcar including at least three 24hr races. It seems I must have been a bit too keen putting the hammer down at the pit lane exit. On the drive through I could see the Race100 crew waving me to be slow, and I duly selected 3rd year and set it at

the agreed rev limit for 60km. However, despite this, I must have once again released the trigger a bit too soon as on my next lap round I received a Stop & Go penalty sign for speeding again! When I saw the pit board, my heart sank, although I was also a bit puzzled as to how I had managed to do this. Once again I came into the pits for my 10 second penalty and second drive through…Grrr! 56 www.cprmag.co.uk

Unbeknown to me half the grid had also been issued the same penalty as me. With all the faffing and extra pit lane visits we lost 90 or so seconds and our first in class place to rivals Montgomery/ Mills by just 41 seconds after the two hours. Quite upsetting to me but thankfully the owner Mike was unconcerned at the defeat having enjoyed the race. We still finished 8th overall and

picked up a 2nd in class pot. Portuguese FIA formalities meant that after the race we were served with written notice of our penalty and had to go up to the race directors’ office like naughty school children to explain ourselves to the headmaster. It was an opportunity to contest the penalty which may or my not have been accepted and also pay a 500 euro bill for the privilege. Keen to retreat to the hotel and enjoy some local cuisine and more Vinho Verde we were very happy to plead ‘guilty’ and return to the prize giving. The race was won outright by Phillip Walker and Miles Griffiths in a 2L Lotus 15.

commonplace at any circuit! It was a shame the event was not better supported by both spectators and competitors. But we did see some Brit supercar owners who had made the epic journey out to watch; respect to them! Having been lucky enough to race a variety of cars over the years, including some hi spec GT cars pumping out over 400hp with slicks and wings, I have often thought nothing would come close to the satisfaction of flying round a circuit on the edge with that kind of power, down-force and grip. But in Portimao I found a whole new world of satisfaction, putting a 1950’s sports racecar through its paces on such a demanding circuit, getting it dancing it on its tip-toes with period tyres, and squeezing just the right amount of power to join the corners seamlessly together is definitely up there with big hp thrills. There’s no doubt about it - I’m hooked! February 2014 57

Ride The Lightning

In 1911, the 200hp Benz - or Lightning Benz as it came to be known thanks to its incredible speed - was the first car to break the 200km/h barrier. David Harrison looks at this impressive early record breaker.

S

ince the dawn of motoring a small number of fearless drivers have been relentless in their pursuit of speed, craving to go ever faster, and for some, to simply be the fastest of all. These record breaking adventurers are a breed apart, and in the early days, breaking such a record was a guarantee 62 www.cprmag.co.uk

of instant celebrity status. Producing a car that would attain such speeds would also bring similar accolades and benefits to the car’s manufacturer, so there was far more than just ‘bragging rights’ at stake here. A record breaking car would boost sales of road cars, and raise the company’s image worldwide

so these inherently dangerous record attempts were usually thinly disguised marketing programmes. One company that threw itself into the business of breaking records was Benz & Cie which was set up by Karl Benz in 1883. It started out producing industrial machines and ‘horseless motor carriages’ and

later moved out to building cars. In 1909, the company built a car which was simply called the ‘200hp Benz’ but it would subsequently gain the nickname ‘Blitzen Benz’ (Lightning Benz) thanks to its incredible speed. At the beginning of the 20th century, the attitude of

Benz & Cie. towards motor racing changed, however. After investigating ways of increasing competitiveness in particular, Julius Ganss, a Board Member of Benz & Cie., came to the conclusion that even Benz could not afford to ignore the intricacies of modern market mechanisms. With a thorough appreciation

of the qualities inherent in the company’s models, he knew that Benz was perfectly equipped to build a sports car which could outstrip any other form of transport at the time – including even trains and aircraft. This new strategy and the accompanying changes it entailed resulted in the February 2014 63

By enlarging the bore to 185 mm, the displacement of the 15.1-litre engine was increased to a substantial 21.5 litres - to date still the engine with the largest displacement ever to be used for a racing car or record-

breaking car by MercedesBenz and its preceding brands. In the record-breaking Benz car, the unit produced up to 147 kW (200 hp) at 1600 rpm. The four-cylinder in-line engine consisted of cylinders cast together in pairs, and weighed 407 kg. It had overhead inlet and outlet valves as well as two spark plugs per cylinder. The engine’s power was transferred to the rear axle by a four-speed manual transmission via an idler shaft and chain. Initially the engine was still used in the body of the Benz Grand Prix car of 1908. It was under this name, and with Fritz Erle at the wheel, that the car also successfully completed its first outing at the one-kilometre race in Frankfurt am Main on 22 August 1909. With a flying start, Erle covered the kilometre in 22.6 seconds,

equivalent to an average speed of 159.3 km/h and enough to secure him the Grand Duchess of Hesse prize. Historical photos show that the car already had its characteristic aerodynamic body at the one-kilometre race in Frankfurt/Main: Erle and Héméry made the car as narrow as possible in order to reduce wind resistance to a minimum, which explains why the gearshift and handbrake levers and the exhaust system were located outside the body of the car, with only bulges in the hood giving the exhaust rocker arms the space they required. The high-standing, narrow radiator core was accommodated behind a brass grille, whose upper end formed an expansion tank pointing out sharply from the front of the car. This “bird’s

caused delight: the sound levels produced by the fourcylinder engine were described as “infernal”. This was because the combination of the cylinders, each with a capacity of more than 5 litres, created a thunderous roar which left spectators’ ears ringing and the earth shaking. The fact that the exhaust pipe also ejected flames from time to time only served to underscore the brute strength of the car. Victor Héméry, who together with Hans Nibel was instrumental in pushing the project forward, drove the 200-hp car for the first time on 17 October 1909 at a sprint race in Brussels, where he succeeded in totally outclassing the competition. Race victories were not the primary aim of Benz & Cie.,

however. It rather more had its sights set on breaking the iconic speed mark of 200 km/h. In the late autumn of 1909, therefore, the Benz 200 hp set out to break the record in England: on 8 November 1909, Victor Héméry looked to exceed 200 km/h on the track at Brooklands. The circuit was just two years old, and had been designed as a highspeed road for modern racing cars. In 1909, Brooklands was the only track in Europe on which a speed of 200 km/h was possible. To begin with Héméry ran the car in, just touching the speed limit: the clear goal of that day was to go faster than 200 km/h for the first time. But Brooklands did not make it easy for him - the two steep curves of the

concrete oval, designed for the highest speeds, also posed a barrier at the same time: if he drove too fast, there was a danger of taking off. Nevertheless, Héméry succeeded in mastering both the car and the track. A speed of 202.648 km/h was recorded for the kilometre, and he even reached 205.666 km/h over the half-mile, from flying starts in both cases –as a result the 8 November 1909 became a great day for Benz. The precision achieved in measuring the speed was also novel: for the first it was 68 www.cprmag.com

possible to record time to three decimal places, thanks to new equipment produced by the company Holden. The 200 km/h mark had now been broken for the first time in Europe. Yet internationally this did not place the recordbreaking Benz 200 hp in something of a special position. Even though no other internal combustion-engined motor car in the entire world had travelled as fast, as ever there was still strong competition from a supposedly superseded technology, namely the steam engine: the

fastest road vehicles of this era were steam cars such as the Stanley Steamer. Using such a vehicle, Fred Marriott had exceeded a speed of 205 km/h at Daytona Beach in 1906. But the engineers were convinced that the recordbreaking car from Mannheim was capable of matching this speed. The race tracks of old Europe, however, were simply no longer able to support such speeds. This is why Benz & Cie. therefore turned the focus of its attention on America when it came to plans for its record-breaking 200-hp car.

Detroit Motor Show

T

he Detroit Motor Show is often overlooked by European car enthusiasts who believe that all the cars there are gas-guzzling, boulevard cruisers that have the cornering capabilities of jelly. Admittedly, some of them

Every year the massive Detroit Motor Show features some impressive performance cars, many of which are being revealed for the first time. David Harrison looks at some of this year’s offerings.

are, but there are plenty of high-performance gems on offer too, and it was those held the most interest for me. If you talk about American performance cars, one name that immediately springs to mind is Chevrolet, or at

least its iconic two-seater the Corvette. This has been the mainstay of the American sportscar industry since its introduction in 1953, and in just about every year since, a new Corvette has been unveiled to the public. This


year was no exception, and the Chevrolet executives could barely contain their glee as they pulled the wraps off the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The car is basically a ‘roadlegal’ race car and Chevrolet calls it ‘the big nasty,’ and says

it is the best Corvette track car ever. Looking at the spec sheet shows they might have a point. The Z06 comes with a new LT4 6.2L engine which is boosted by a 1.7L Eaton R1740 TVS supercharger, the

whole package is expected to produce at least 625hp and 861Nm of torque. The engine can be mated to one of two types of gearbox: a sevenspeed manual box (with Active Rev Match) or a new, highperformance 8L90 eight-speed February 2014 73

The idea was for the new car to mimic the cars successfully campaigned at Le Mans and in the American Le Mans Series, although the proper race cars are vastly different under the bodywork. removable roof panel and will be available with an optional carbon fibre ‘Aero Package’ which includes a carbon fibre front splitter with aviationstyle winglets, carbon fibre rocker panels, and a larger rear spoiler with a fixed ‘wickerbill, which is a small, vertical tab at the edge of

the spoiler that significantly increases downforce.

Snake Charmer Of course, America has more than one sportscar, and a new version of the other one was also unveiled at the Detroit show. Well, when we say ‘new version’ what we actually mean is that the Dodge Viper SRT now comes with a ‘Grand Touring Pack’ and can be supplied in the garish shade of Stryker Green. Apparently the finish has evolved from a colour used on the Viper back in 2008 and is more time consuming to apply

than a conventional process. “The application of the new Stryker Green exterior paint is a very detailed and intricate process, taking approximately eight hours to complete. The process first starts with a base colour coat followed by a green-tinted mid-coat and topped off with a clear finish,” said Ralph Gilles, President

and CEO, SRT Brand and Motorsports. Of course, if the green isn’t for you, you could always opt for ‘Venom Black.’

Future Toyota While the Viper and the Corvette gained nods of approval from the traditionalist American buyers, one other car attracting a lot of attention

was Toyota’s stunning FT-1 ‘concept’ car. Described by the manufacturer as “a true enthusiast’s track car in the lineage of the 2000GT and Supra,” the name FT-1 stands for ‘Future Toyota’, while the figure one represents “the ultimate world-class sports car with the ultimate performance envelope”. Sheesh! And you thought they were just letter and a number! Toyota wouldn’t be drawn on the specifications of the FT1, other than to say it was fitted with a ‘high performance’ internal combustion engine and did not use any form of hybrid power. Toyota have gone for a front engine/rearwheel-drive layout on the FT-1 which might seem surprising in this age which seems to favour mid-engined supercars. British Pony Moving back to iconic American cars once again, and they don’t get much more iconic than Ford’s legendary Mustang. The big news - especially for

us Brits - is that the Mustang will be made available in righthand drive here in the UK. It is the first time in the model’s 50 year history that a RHD option has been offered. The new Mustang has also had it bodywork restyled and now has slightly more aggressive looking front lights, but the really good news is that the


prehistoric rear live-axle has been replaced by a more sophisticated fully independent multi-link suspension which should improve both handling and ride quality. Up at the front end, a new lighter subframe, bigger brakes (six piston fixed calipers with 15-inch steel discs on the V8 model) a limited slip differential and a torque vectoring system are all part of the new uprated chassis. There is a choice of engines too, where traditionalists can go for the good old fashioned 5.0-litre V8 range-topper with its 420bhp and 529Nm of torque, but it will be the

Top Targa Another new car with an old twist, or is that an old car with a modern twist, was the Porsche 911 Targa. The car made its first public appearance at Detroit and has is now on sale with prices starting £86,281 for the 911 Targa 4 and £96,316 for the Targa 4S.

Deliveries of UK cars are expected to start in May. Some of the more recent Targas had a glass roof which retracted back behind the rear screen, but the new model mimics the original 1965 design with a removable solid, cloth panel that is stowed in the boot, though how popular this ‘retro’ feature will prove remains to be seen. The Targa will come with a choice of engines: a 345bhp 3.4-litre flat-six and a 395bhp 3.8-litre which give times from 0-62mph of 4.8 and 4.4 February 2014 77

and corporate bling and some of the new car reveals must have taken months to plan. I can seem all rather cheesy to us Brits, but it’s hard not to get swept along in the excitement of it all...at least until one remembers where

one is from and composes ones self once again! No, Detroit is what it is: a huge, awe inspiring monster of a show, and despite feeling completely drained by the whole experience, I’m sure I will be back for more next year. Gluton for punishment? You bet!

The two-day sale saw ten million-dollar-plus transactions and numerous auction records set. Top sale honours went to the highly desirable 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider, chassis 1055 GT with coachwork by Scaglietti, selling for an incredible $8,800,000 before a packed auction room, making it the most valuable car ever sold in Arizona auction week history. record for the sale of important Ferraris at auction, additional Ferrari highlights from the two-day sale include: the beautifully restored 1963 Ferrari 250 GT/L ‘Lusso’, chassis 5215 GT, which sold for $2,447,500, setting a new record for the model at public auction; a wonderfully preserved 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB, chassis 8349, which sold for $1,815,000; and a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS, chassis 08353, which sold for $1,485,000. Additional impressive million-dollar-plus sales included the brilliantly restored, ex-Bob Donner and Don Wester 1961 Porsche 718 RS 61 Spyder, taking the number two spot at $2,750,000. Rare Lancia Stars at Coys 2014 Autosport International Sale

One of the highlights of the massive Autosport International show held annually at the NEC, Birmingham, is the Coys auction. The sale not only includes a good number of impressive classic and supercars, it sometimes features a rare racing car or two as well. This year’s sale did not disappoint. Perhaps the star lot of the sale was the last surviving 1969 Lancia Fulvia Spider Fiorio & Maglioli. The car was from the estate of Oscar Capellano and was one of just three ever made. It has an impressive history too having taken part in events such as the 1000 kms of Nürburgring and the Monte Carlo Rally. The Lancia attracted a lot of bidding before the hammer eventually fell at an impressive £231,400. Another lot that seemed to be a bargain in comparison was the 1988 Argo JM 19C Ex Le Mans which sold for just £75,000. The car - chassis no. 124-02 - was entered for the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hour race by MT Sport Racing and finished 21st overall. It is certainly a lot of car for the money and represents a great way into historic Group C racing should the new owner

Strong Bidding At H&H Chateau Impney Sale H&H Auctions Chateau Impney Sale Chateau Impney, West Mids, UK. December 4, 2013. H&H Auctions Chateau Impney sale attracted some strong bidding for a wide variety of classics and sportscars. The highest price paid during the sale was for a 1939 Lagonda V12 drophead coupé at £201,600. It was an impressive result and the car had a pre-sale estimate of £120,000 - £160,000. Another car to exceed its estimate was a 1948 HRG 1500 which fetched £43,680 while a Ford Falcon Sprint hillclimber represented good value at just £11,760. A barn-find 1975 Alfa 2000GTV also more than doubled its pre-sale estimate to fetch £9,184, a Jaguar XK140 FHC went for £44,800 and a 1932 Wolseley Hornet Special sold for £30,800.

The author looks at aspects of ownership such as ‘what is it like to drive’ and ‘is it practical.’ The book even covers details such as the minimum size of garage required for the car, spares availability and the cost of carrying out certain jobs on the car. Like all good buying guides, the book also details exactly what to look for when inspecting a potential purchase and even divides this section to cover a quick inspection, key points and serious evaluation of the car.
