Editorial So here we are once again. The summer has gone, the clocks have gone back and ‘Jingle Bells’ is playing in just about every shop I go into (bah humbug!). That means this must be the Christmas issue. Thankfully, you will find the latest copy of your favourite free digital car magazine is reasonably ‘festive free’ so you know where you can come if the ‘tinsel and cheer’ all gets a bit much for you. The good bit about Christmas however is that this time of year also sees a huge boost in our readership figures as the demand for ‘tablet PCs’ goes through the roof. Last year, the UK’s biggest computer retailer PC World said that they were selling Tablet PCs at the rate of one every two seconds throughout the month of December, and this year should see them selling at an even faster rate. That is great news for us as it means that more people than ever before will be able to access and read Classic, Performance & Retro magazine. In fact, if any of your friends or family get a tablet PC for Christmas, you can really impress them by showing them how to find our website and magazine. They can have the latest copy plus all our back issues right there in their hands...and it costs them nothing! No App or iTunes download needed either (sorry Apple!) What could be better than that? So, back to this issue, and as always we have some amazing features in store for you. We sent our Editor to brave the crowds at this year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show and you can read all about his experience in his ten page report. We also take a look at the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300SL ‘Gullwing,’ and bringing things right up to date, we have Chris McEvoy’s thoughts on a very attractive high-performance saloon - the new Jaguar XFR-S. Lotus Investment

RGF Cash Boost To Create 313 Lotus Jobs The UK’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF) has awarded Lotus £10.44 million, which will be used for research and development of products, along with staff training. In addition Lotus is expected to create 313 new full time jobs to support production over the coming years. Business Secretary, Vince Cable MP visited Lotus’ Norfolk headquarters on November 25, where he toured the engineering and factory facilities and formally announced the grant to Lotus management. The grant is a further boost for Lotus, following a £100 million investment by its owners DRB-HICOM which has allowed the company to enhance its engineering, productivity, efficiency and quality. Aslam Farikullah, Chief Operating Officer at Lotus, said: “This grant is part of a wider strategy for Lotus created to ensure we thrive and grow. We are responding to increased global demand for our cars and engineering consultancy services and this grant will help to position Lotus at the forefront of global automotive innovation. “We have very exciting plans for our sports cars and it’s a very positive move for Lotus that we’re in a position to create new jobs and to significantly contribute to Britain’s automotive industry.” Business Secretary Vince Cable added: “Lotus is an iconic British car maker, with some of the most innovative engineers in the business. The car industry is one of Britain’s great success stories, employing over 130,000 people and helping to build a stronger economy by contributing £11 billion a year. Goodbye Gallardo!

Lamborghini Ends Gallardo Production The last Lamborghini Gallardo has rolled off the production line at the company’s historic factory buildings in Sant’Agata Bolognese. The final model was a Gallardo LP 570-4 Spyder Performante in Rosso Mars (red) and is destined for a private collector. More Gallardos were built than any other Lamborghini model, with a total of 14,022 cars being produced since 2003. When the car made its debut ten years ago, its appearance marked a fundamental watershed in the history of the Italian ‘supercar’ maker. In Lamborghini’s first four decades, an average of just 250 cars were built per year. In the decade of the Gallardo, production grew to a whole new dimension with volumes of around 2,000 cars per year on average. Now in 2013, which is also Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary, the Gallardo success story has come to an end with car number 14,022. Incredibly, that means that almost half of all 30,000 Lamborghinis built since the company was first founded in 1963, are Gallardos. www.lamborghini.com

CarFest Returns!

CarFest Dates Announced For 2014 The 2014 dates for CarFest - the popular doubleweekend show organised by celebrity DJ Chris Evans - have been announced. The show, which is held at two separate locations will be staged at Oulton Park on August 1-3 (CarFest North) and at Jody Scheckter’s Laverstoke Park Farm near Basingstoke in Hampshire on August 22-24 (CarFest South). The first CarFest was held in 2012, and despite being still a relatively new event, it has raised over £2million for the BBC Children in Need appeal and seen more that 200,000 visitors flock through the gates. Evans said: “It’s onwards and upwards for CarFest. To date we’ve had some absolutely brilliant fun and raised more than two million pounds for BBC Children in Need. How could we not do it all over again in 2014? McLaren & Metro 6R4 To Star At Race Retro Historic motorsport show Race Retro will once again be held at Stoneleigh Park near Coventry and the dates to mark in your diary are February 21-23, 2014. The event is a great place for teams and drivers to go and stock up on parts and equipment for the coming season, and it’s a great place to see some stunning race cars. Each year the show celebrates certain milestones in motorsport and shines the spotlight on an acclaimed marque and the 2014 show will mark 30 years of the Metro 6R4 and 50 years of McLaren. It’s been thirty years since the debut of the crowd-pleasing MG Metro 6R4 (6 cylinder, 4 wheel drive) Group B rally car of 1984. Sanctioned by Austin Rover Group who, conscious of the worldwide publicity value of rallying, commissioned Williams Grand Prix engineering to create the AR challenger for the spectacular Group B rally series. Forever afterwards known as the cars that were ‘too fast to race’ these spectacular monsters of 1980’s world rally were built to virtually ‘no holds barred’ regulations. As well as a static display, the Metro 6R4 will also be reliving its glory days on the purpose built Rally Stage on Saturday and Sunday when the show’s live action gets underway in the grounds of Stoneleigh Park. The celebration of McLaren will mark fifty years since the formation of Bruce McLaren’s eponymous company. The central feature will be the McLaren M23 F1 car driven by the teams then number one driver Emerson Fittipaldi, to take the 1974 F1 double, drivers and constructors world championships. This was Fittipaldi’s second F1 world championship but the teams first constructors F1 world championship. www.raceretro.com

Aston Martin ‘Barn Find’ Sells For £131,420 It’s not often you find the words ‘Aston Martin’ and ‘barn find’ in the same sentence, but if you were at Bonham’s recent auction in Harrogate, that is exactly what you would have seen printed in the sale catalogue. The car is question was a 1967 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage which had been stored in a garage in Scotland since the 1990s. The car requires a complete restoration, yet has a reasonably complete history and less than 90,000 miles on the clock. It attracted a lot of interest and the bidding was strong, with the hammer eventually falling at £131,420. Another lot that created a real buzz before the sale was the 1949 Triumph Roadster that was used in the TV series Bergerac. The car had a pre-sale estimate of £25-30,000, so it was surprising when bidding stalled at just £23,000 and the hammer fell. Among the other interesting lots was a left-hand-drive 1969 Jaguar E-type S2 that sold for just over £8,000 which is about as cheap as it gets when it comes to the iconic Jaguar. The car was missing its gearbox and was a non-runner, but it still represented excellent value for the money paid. www.bonhams.com

Vintage Record Breaker!

Ford Model A Sets USA Coast To Coast Record Australian motoring enthusiast Rod Wade and his codriver Michael Flanders have set a new world record for driving a pre-war car from New York to California. The pair set off from Staten Island, New York at midnight on November 22 in their 1930 Ford Model A and completed the 3,000 mile journey to Venice Beach, California, in just 50 hours, 20 minutes and six seconds. Their official arrival time was 11.15pm on Saturday 23 November. To mark the achievement Wade poured a bottle of Atlantic sea water into the Pacific Ocean. The journey was an arduous one, with both the drivers and car taking on the extremes of the US climate. The crew fought their way through severe storms, freezing rain, fog and snow, and during one section of the journey they were stopping every two miles to scrape ice from their windscreen. This was the second time that the pair had attempted the record breaking drive. Their previous attempt in October ended prematurely when their engine suffered a crankshaft failure just outside Amarillo. On arriving at Venice Beach Fishing Pier, Rod said: “I can’t believe we got here in such a good time. It got scary through Amarillo again but we battled on. If it wasn’t for the weather conditions, we would have done it on 40’odd hours. Maybe next time!” The pair took on the ‘Ocean 2 Ocean Challenge – America’ to raise funds and awareness for the American Kidney Fund. Wade’s next venture will see the Vintage Adventurer team take on the ‘Ocean to Ocean - Australia,’ driving from Queensland to Freemantle and back again. New event shaping up nicely Organisers of The Autojumble (Midlands) which takes place on Sunday January 5, 2014, at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, say that over 100 trade plots have already been taken for the new show. A spokesman for show-organisers One Louder Events said: “We’re delighted at the levels of enthusiasm and support shown so far for this all-new event. We only announced it a few weeks ago and, at the last count, traders have already snapped up 107 plots! We are convinced that an event like this (at a quality central indoor venue offering a great opportunity for visitors to find parts and services for their restoration projects, in comfort, regardless of the great British winter) is vitally important to many classic/vintage car owners and traders.” The large, modern, fully heated hall has capacity for hundreds of stands and will be occupied by many of the country’s top specialist traders offering all sorts of classic, veteran, & vintage car parts, automobilia, automotive literature, models, tools, trim, restoration services, garage equipment and individual garage clearances. This could be the ideal event to help owners with their winter restoration and maintenance projects and a great chance for everyone to get back into indulging their automotive passions after the Christmas and New Year break. Public opening hours are 10am – 4pm. Ticket prices are £7.50 in advance and £10.00 on the door and parking costs just £1. The main exhibition hall (sponsored by Jaguar) measures nearly 65,000 square feet and is a very good venue for events such as this one. Festive Feast!

Lots On Offer At Baron’s Festive Sale Barons’ annual Yuletide Classic Sale always ends the year on a high, and the entry list for this year’s event (Sandown Park, December 17) features a really interesting and diverse range of cars. The 1965 Series One Jaguar E-type 4.2 roadster (shown above) represents a fascinating opportunity to complete a restoration project that was put on ice back in 1982, since which time the car has covered just 300 miles. It boasts a Martin Robey shell with new (in 1982) doors, boot lid, interior trim and hood. New front wings and under pan are loosely fitted. The car still sports its 1982 tax disc and is emerging from long-term storage ripe for recommissioning (£55,000-£75,000). Those in search of a restoration project for a smaller budget – and smaller garage – might like to consider the ‘barn find’ 1962 Mini. With just 39,000 miles on the clock and one recorded previous owner, this little car has been sitting in a barn for the past 20 years (£5,000-£8,000). Of course, not everybody wants to tackle a restoration and Barons’ Yuletide Classic has plenty of cars for buyers who want something ‘on the button.’ The 1964 Ford Lotus Cortina has been in the vendor’s ownership for some 30 years. Over the decades the owner has had the car restored from the ground up but has used it very little since the project was complete. In fact, the car has covered only 24,000 miles in 49 years (£38,000-£42,000). With its classic Rosso red paintwork and black leather interior, the 1972 Alfa Romeo 1600 GT Junior (shown right) is an attractive proposition. It has had just two owners from new and has had a full professional restoration in 2010/11. The car comes with original Blaupunkt radio and door speakers and tool kit, plus all books and keys complete from new. There is even the original Bill of Sale (£12,000-£14,000). For Triumph fan there is the 1971 TR6 that has had one owner from new and covered 54,000 miles; most of which were in the first three years of its life. The car has seen little use in recent years, but has always been kept garaged and has been regularly inspected and run (£13,500£16,000). Two other unusual lots are the 1975 Citroen AK400 (2CV) van and the ‘time warp’ 1981 Vauxhall Chevette ES SLN. The Citroen is well presented and could make a fantastic promotional vehicle for a business or quirky runabout for a classic enthusiast who wants something a little different (£4,000-£6,000). And the Chevette really does look as if it has just been driven out of a garage in 1981. In lovely condition inside and out it has covered less than 40,000 miles from new. With a guide price of £2,000-£2,500 this would make a wonderful Christmas present for a prospective first-time classic owner! www.barons-auctions.com

Britcar Rivals Team Up

Team LNT Announce Driver Line-Up For Dubai 24 Hour Team LNT’s Mike Simpson and Lawrence Tomlinson will be joining forces with former Britcar rivals Javier Morcillo and Paul White in early 2014, as the foursome contest the Dubai 24 Hour in the Ginetta G55 GT3 car. Team LNT’s Ginetta & Morcillo’s Mosler have enjoyed some fantastic on-track battles over the past few years, with the two cars locking out the front row at the Britcar 24 Hour race in 2012, as well as the 1,000KM endurance gathering this year. Morcillo has been a big promoter of Ginetta cars in Spain, running Escuela Española de Pilotos’ Ginetta G50 to numerous Spanish GT victories. The relationship with Ginetta Cars made Team LNT the obvious choice for Morcillo’s campaign in the gruelling endurance race set to take place at the 5.39km Dubai Autodrome Grand Prix Circuit, on 9 - 11 January 2014. Palace Dates Announced

Motorsport At The Palace Returns For 2014 Motorsport at the Palace returns next year for its fifth consecutive running, with the popular London sprint taking place on May 25-26, 2014. Reinforcing its status as a community-focused event, Motorsport at the Palace has now raised over £13,500 for local charities. Next year it hopes to lift the bar even higher, as the event returns to thrill spectators and drivers in equal measure. As usual, there will be plenty to keep guests of all ages entertained away from the track. The show area will be packed with exotic cars, with numerous single marque, classic car and motorcycle club stands, in addition to retail and catering areas. Younger guests can enjoy fairground rides and inflatables, while those on the look-out for a new car can browse the on-site Ancaster showroom, featuring Ancaster’s extensive range of Nissan, Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Hyundai vehicles. And as always, the friendly paddock will be open to visitors, enabling guests to get up close to the cars and chat to the drivers before they take to the track. Motorsport at the Palace takes place at Crystal Palace Park which is one of the oldest motor sport venues in the world, and since it staged its first motor race back in 1899, it’s played host to some fantastic battles involving some of the sport’s greatest names. From its early days as an improvised venue for enthusiasts, through the 1920s and ‘30s when huge crowds came to cheer on the local Glaziers motorcycle speedway team, right up until the circuit closed in 1972, Crystal Palace really was ‘London’s Own Circuit.’ www.motorsportatthepalace.co.uk

Top IHMA Award For Silverstone Classic This year’s Silverstone Classic has overcome an impressive line-up of international events to win the prestigious ‘Motorsport Event of the Year Award’ at the third International Historic Motoring Awards (IHMA). Staged recently in London at the St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, the IHMA welcomed winners and other nominees who had travelled from as far afield as Kuwait and the USA to learn which events had been chosen by the judges. The illustrious judging panel included racing drivers Derek Bell and Jochen Mass, the car designer Peter Stevens, musician, historic racer and car collector Nick Mason and the Volkswagen Groups’ Dr. Franz Josef Paefgen. With motor sport being such a massive part of the historic motoring world, the impressive shortlist for the coveted title of Motorsport Event of the Year, sponsored by Jaguar Cars, featured events from right around the globe including Australia, California and Europe. The judges, however, selected the Silverstone Classic for the top accolade stating that ‘the Silverstone Classic this year really came of age and established itself in the top echelon of international historic motor sport events’. The award was collected on behalf of the Silverstone Classic organising team by event manager Luke Wigley. Provisional MG90 Silverstone Dates Announced The MG Car Club has announced the provisional dates of June 21-22 for the club’s annual festival at Silverstone. For 2014, the two day event will be renamed MG90 in honour of the Marque’s 90 year anniversary celebrations. MG90 at Silverstone will be a splendid mix of MG’s rich heritage and exciting future. It will also be a truly international affair, featuring a spectacular array of MGs from around the world, stretching across ten decades. Sporting Bears ‘Dream Rides’ Raises £41,148 At NEC Show The Sporting Bears Motor Club raised a staggering £41,148 by offering its ever popular Dream Rides at this years Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show at the NEC, Birmingham. Members of the club spent three long days at the show, and brought along a stunning collection of cars in which members of the public to take a ride in exchange for a charitable donation. The Bear’s North West Co-ordinator Max Walker said: “After 3 days of Dream Rides, the generosity of the public in the week after Armistice Day and the weekend of Children in Need always amazes me and makes me proud of everyone digging deep......THANK YOU!” The money raised is donated to very deserving children’s charities, such as the Newlife Foundation for Disabled Children (www.newlifecharity.co.uk) and Help Harry Help Others (hhho.org.uk). The Lancaster Insurance

The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show has gained a reputation for being one of the biggest and best classic car shows in Europe. Simon Hazeldine called in to see what this year’s event had to offer.

lot of people tell me I should be on that TV programme ‘Grumpy Old Men,’ which as the title suggests, features some miserable looking celebrities complaining about everything and anything. Yes, I’ll admit it; I don’t need much of an excuse to have a good old moan, so for me the Classic Motor Show held annually each year at the NEC, Birmingham, is a rather bitter-sweet 20 www.cprmag.co.uk

experience. Sure, it is the biggest indoor car show in the UK bar none, and it always has a mindboggling array of stunning classic cars on display. But this is England and it’s the middle of November. It’s cold and damp. It’s the NEC which means paying a tenner just to park the car, and don’t even get me started on the overinflated food prices in the complex. The car park is miles from the halls which means catching an over-crowded shuttle bus, or taking a 20 minute walk to the halls. Once inside, the ‘grumpies’ among us will be muttering under their breath as they

shuffle along the crowded aisles around the exhibits, constantly being bumped and jostled by fellow show visitors. And don’t even think about taking photos; pointing a camera at a car is an open invitation for someone to stand right in front of your chosen

subject, or walk right past the camera lens just as you press the shutter button. Grrrrr.... Anyway, enough of the moaning. Despite all the obvious shortcomings, this is actually a very slick and classy show. Immense planning a preparation goes into producing an event of this size, and the fact that is seems to run as smoothly as it does year after year reflects well on the organisers.

Last year saw the layout of the show change slightly. Previously the show had used the large Piazza Halls 1-5, but now it utilizes halls 6-12 and 17-20. These are arranged roughly in a C-shape which

means you can start at one end of the show, and work your way through each hall until you reach the last one. The downside of this arrangement is that someone decided that it would be a good idea to put the Classic Motorcycle Show slap bang in the middle of the classic car show. This might seem like a good way of forcing footfall into the bike show, but I actually saw people look into the hall, see it was full of bikes, and then turn back not realising that more cars were in the halls beyond. I wonder how many people only saw half the car show because of this?

Star Cars The Classic Motor Show usually has a few ‘star’ cars on show that give the event a bit of a ‘wow factor’ but this year they seemed to be a bit light on the ground. Perhaps the

most notable of the ‘famous’ cars was the Aston Martin DB5 which was used in the recent James Bond film, Skyfall, while from the other side of the Atlantic, there was a replica of the Ford Gran Torino used in the 1970s TV series ‘Starsky and Hutch.’ The car wasn’t the only star from the series at the show as David Soul, the actor who played the role of Hutch, was also there signing autographs and posing for pictures. Of course, the main reason for his appearance was to promote his new film about the restoration of Ernest Hemingway’s 1955 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible in December 2013 23


This ‘barn-find’ Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite made a very interesting exhibit. Havana, Cuba, which charts the challenging restoration of the historic car and the ingenious methods used to get around the USA’s trade embargo with Cuba. Soul spaoke at length about the film on the main stage, interviewed by TV’s ‘Wheeler Dealer’ Mike Brewer, and it certainly sounds like it will be an interesting film.

Away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, the award for hardest working people at the show had to go the Sporting Bears Motor Club who once again ran their amazing ‘Dream Rides’ programme to raise much needed funds for children’s charities. Morris Y Series van. charity, in exchange for which they can take a passenger ride around the local area in their chosen ‘dream car.’ The cars and all running costs are donated by the club’s members, and among the cars taking part this year was a Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari F430, Jaguar E-Types, Bentleys, Cobras and just about every other ‘dream car’ that you can imagine! Judging by the huge crowd of people around the Bear’s ‘paddock,’ it looked like it would be a very successful weekend. And so it turned out; when the dust had finally settled and all the cash was counted, the Bears had raised a staggering £41,148 for charity - a new record for the NEC Dream Rides. I think I need a beer!” Elsewhere, the halls were littered with the usual car club stands which ranged from lavish multi-vehicle displays to very basic presentations with just a couple of cars and a fold-up table. In some ways, it is those in that latter bracket that deserve the most praise, because

despite maybe having only a few hundred members and very low funds, they still make the effort to be at this show and are proud to show off their cars and talk to visitors. It’s all done for the love of it, and not a paid employee in sight. Overall, I thought the Classic Motor Show lived up to its reputation of being one of the biggest and best classic car shows in Europe and there

was certainly an amazing number of exhibits to see. The show perhaps didn’t have its usual amount of ‘wow factor’ this year due to the lack of any A-list ‘celebrity’ cars, but what ever you might think about this event, it is certainly one of the biggest and best organised you will ever visit. Now, if they could just do something about those parking charges! December 2013 29

The Mercedes-Benz 300SL is one of the all-time greats in the classic car world, famous for its curvacious good looks and unusual ‘gullwing’ style doors, but what does the future hold for this iconic machine?

The attractive lines of the 300SL give the car great appeal and ‘eternal youth.’ Mercedes-Benz to build a road car in the image of its racing coupe, the start of production in 1954 providing a sweet fruit for his endeavours. The assembly lines may have waved goodbye to the last of the only 1,400 units of the 300 SL coupe ever made in 1957, but the spirit of this extraordinary car most certainly lives on, and demand for these cars is as high as ever.

Race-Track To Road

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was conceived initially as a purpose-built racing sports car (W 194). In 1952, the coupe notched up an impressive record of success in the year’s major races. At the Grand Prix in Bern the 300 SL sealed a clean sweep of the podium places, an awesome performance backed up by a one-two finish ahead of a

stunned field in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Nürburgring duly yielded another one-twothree, and the new Mercedes racing sports car also claimed victory in the Carrera Panamericana in Mexico. It all added up to a majestic return to motor sport for MercedesBenz, picking up where the brand had left off during a highly successful period before the Second World War. December 2013 33

Acceleration was suitably impressive – especially with the right choice of rear axle ratio. was a streamlined form with few adornments, a car which adhered faithfully to its design brief and which has retained its freshness and allure to the present day. Wonderfully proportioned and extremely dynamic, it was as if the 300 SL – surging forward on its wheels – had been cut form a single mold. The new sports car was a real crowd-puller, thanks in no small measure to its wonderfully charismatic “gullwing” doors. Rather than serving merely as a stylistic gimmick, they represented the central element of the 300 SL design, the ultimate example of necessity as the mother of invention. The car’s aluminum skin was stretched over a tubular frame, which – in the interests of stability – rose much further than usual up the sides of the

vehicle, making it impossible to fit conventional doors. The response of the engineers was to devise an upwards-opening door concept. The elegance of the car’s side view remained undisturbed by a door handle, with a discreet pull-out bar disengaging the lock. The door then opened upwards with the help of a telescopic spring. The tubular frame for the 300 SL, designed by Rudolf

Uhlenhaut, reduced weight to a minimum but provided maximum strength. A series of extremely thin tubes were welded together into triangles to produce a frame which boasted impressive torsional stiffness and was only subjected to compression and tensile forces. In the standard SL the frame tipped the scales at only 82 kilograms, whilst the complete car in ready-to-

drive condition and including the spare wheel, tools and fuel weighed in at 1,295 kilograms. The body of the 300 SL was constructed largely out of high-grade sheet steel, although aluminum was used for the engine hood, trunk lid and the skin panels for the door sills and doors. For a relatively small extra charge, customers could choose to have the whole body made from light alloy, which cut 80 kilograms off the car’s total weight. However, only 29 SL customers took up this option and today their cars are highly

sought-after rarities.

The Technology The technical make-up of the 300 SL owes much to the Mercedes-Benz 300 (W 186 II) sedan, the vehicle of choice for many statesmen and industrialists and also known as the “Adenauer Mercedes”. The six-cylinder engine featured a number of modifications, one of which saw the carburetor replaced by a direction injection system – a technical advance which was years ahead of its time. This new technology boosted

output to 158 kW (215 hp) and the car’s maximum speed up as far as 260 km/h, depending on the rear axle ratio. Customers could order their SL with a choice of five different ratios. The standard 1:3.64 variant was set up primarily to deliver rapid acceleration and capable of 235 km/h. The 1:3.89 and 1:4.11 ratios were good for even faster acceleration, whilst the 1:3.42 option offered a higher top speed. This figure rose still further – to 260 km/h – when the ratio was set at 1:3.25. However, this “resulted in greatly reduced acceleration, making the car less enjoyable to drive in downtown city traffic,” as the sales information pointed out. The 300 SL hit 100 km/h in just 10 seconds, with car testers at the time measuring fuel consumption at an average of 15 liters per 100 km. A 100-liter fuel tank was positioned at the rear of the

The engine had to be tilted 45 degrees to the left in order to squeeze under the hood of what was an extremely flat car, thus reducing the amount of space in the passenger-side footwell. The SL’s center of gravity was almost exactly in the middle of the car, laying the perfect foundations for fast and precise cornering. The chassis was essentially the same as the 300a sedan’s, but with sportier tuning, and the drum brakes were adapted in response to the increased performance of the musclebound sports car. Only later, in the 1961 roadster variant, were these replaced by disc brakes all round.

The Interior The interior of the 300 SL was more solid than spectacular.

The standard fabric seat upholstery was available in a choice of three checked patterns, but most customers opted for leather instead. The body paintwork came in silver metallic as standard, although red, dark blue and black also proved popular. A shortage of space made getting into the 300 SL something of a challenge – this was, after all, a sports car. Fortunately, the steering wheel could be folded down, allowing the driver to twist his or her legs in the direction of the pedals. Once seated, the driver enjoyed an ergonomically impressively refined cockpit design. The steering wheel was just the right distance for the arms to reach and the driver’s feet moved intuitively onto the pedals: the 300 SL was

very much a driver’s car. In addition, the instrument panel was extremely tidy and clearly laid-out, with the rev counter and speedometer in the center of the driver’s field of vision, as you would expect.

Handling Out on the road, you quickly realized why the 300 SL had been christened with those particular letters – the car was certainly Sporty and Light. With an engine delivering 215 hp and a total weight of only around 1,300 kilograms, acceleration was suitably impressive – especially with the right choice of rear axle ratio. Exceptional torque ensured good pulling power at any speed. The steering was direct and the suspension made sure that the car hugged the road nicely. There’s no December 2013 37


doubt that the 300 SL was a sports car of the finest pedigree. That said, it was far from impractical, as many owners were quick to appreciate. For them, this was a high-speed touring car which offered precise driving characteristics but which avoided sapping the energy of the driver unduly. The trunk was sufficiently large, complemented as it was by the extra room behind the seats for additional baggage. Plus, customers could order a made-to-measure luggage set designed to make the most of the space available. 38 www.cprmag.co.uk

A total of 1,400 Gullwings rolled off the production line, the lion’s share of which – some 1,100 units – found their way to the USA. Hoffman had thus assessed the response of the market to the car extremely well and had every right to be satisfied with his work. However, he had also succeeded in stoking the expectations of his discerning customers, who now wanted a touch more comfort in their cars, a larger trunk and,

in many cases, a cabriolet version. Hoffman passed the message on to Stuttgart and once again his request bore fruit – this time in the form of the 300 SL roadster (W 198 II) unveiled in 1957.

Racing Success The racing genes of the 300 SL tempted renowned racing drivers and privateers from all over the world to enter sports car races and rallies. The 300 SL made its first appearances in the popular racing events of the time in

1955 – and didn’t have to wait long before tasting success. The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL attained legendary status well before the assembly lines ground to a halt, thanks in part to its success in race competition but most of all to the captivating allure of its stunning design. The 300 SL has been counted among the world’s most sought-after and highly rated cars for 50 years now, and its status as one of the most revered classic automobiles on the market is set to remain intact for quite some time to come. Spyker B6

Venator

There are so many aviation themed features on the new Spyker B6 Venator that your could stick some wings on it and it would probably fly! David Harrison takes a closer look at this sportscar of the future.

D

utch car maker Spyker has always been something of an enigma. The cars that roll off the company’s production line look superb, and while they may not rival some of the Italian ‘supercars’ on the ‘exciteo-meter’ they are no slouches either. They also have heaps of that famous Dutch eccentricity built 42 www.cprmag.co.uk

into them, and some of the design features would look more at home on a World War Two aeroplane than a modern, high-performance sportscar. In fact, a lot of the styling used on Spyker cars has been ‘borrowed’ from the aviation world, and that is no accident. During the First World War, Spyker produced aeroplanes and

aircraft engines, a fact that is acknowledged by the propeller image used in the company logo. The signature Spyker model has been the C8 Aileron since it was first introduced back in 2009 and until March of this year, that was pretty much the only thing you could buy with a Spyker badge on it. Step forward (big


fanfare please!) the Spyker B6 Venator. The car was one of the undoubted highlights of the Geneva Motor Show, its name being the Latin for ‘Hunter.’ It is an attractive twoseater compact fixedhead sportster powered by an 3.5 litre 375hp supercharged V6 that is based on Toyota unit which has been tuned by Lotus. That means it is basically the same powerplant as fitted to the Evora S and Exige S.

Six months later in September at the lavish Salon Prive show in London, the wraps were pulled off the convertible version - the Spyker B6 Venator Spyder. Okay, it came as no surprise to discover that the Spyder was pretty much the same car as the sportster...but without the roof, but it still looked every bit as good as its stable-mate. Looking around the car, the first thing you notice is the huge ‘trademark’

radiator intake on the nose of the car. It is reminiscent of a jet aircraft engine intake and only the presence of the stainlesssteel mesh grille set into the aperture makes it look more ‘car-like.’ The headlamps follow current fashion and use LED ‘light rails,’ similar to the Ferrari 458 Italia, which gives the car an aggressive look at the front. Rear lights designed to look like aircraft ‘afterburners.’ which according to the manufacturer is supposed to look like the ‘afterburners’ on a modern jet fighter aircraft. Another eye-catching feature on the Venador are the 19” Turbofan wheels which mimic the fan blades of a jet engine. They look odd at first glance, but the look certainly grew on me and now I really like them. It is interesting how Spyker 44 www.cprmag.co.uk

seem to have gone to great lengths to make the exterior of the car look very ‘modern’ while inside, the Venador is a riot of retro kitsch. The opulent tan leather trim seems to fill the car, which is not that unusual in itself, but the ‘quilted’ effect given by the crisscross stitching is very much an acquired taste. The leather is actually

sourced from the Litano range produced by the Royal Hulshof Dutch Tanneries in Lichtenvoorde, Netherlands. The centre console carries the trademark Spyker gear-shift lever which slides on an exposed linkage and governs the six-speed auto box. In front of the gear selector, the console sweeps up to meet the dashboard.


The face of the console is covered with an ‘enginemachined’ alloy panel which mimics those used on very early aircraft. The switches mounted on the panel are also the retro ‘toggle’ type and have aeroplane style switch guards shielding them from being accidently knocked. The facia air vents carry the aviation theme even further and look very ‘jet’ like, as do the gauges sitting behind the leathertrimmed steering wheel. The hardware mounted on the wheel (buttons, switches, gear selector etc) are all have a chrome finish. It should look terrible, but somehow, it just works. The plan now is to start selling the cars, although they will be produced initially in very limited numbers. The first 100 cars off the line will be limited run editions that will include a clock embedded into a turned aluminium dashboard, and for the proud new

owner there will also be a matching wristwatch. Both the clock and watch have been specially produced for Spyker by Chronoswiss. As for the price, as always it depends on which model you want. The hard-top

version will sell for around £110,000 while the Spyder will be about £120,000, so basically that wind-inthe-hair feeling is going to cost you £10,000! Expect deliveries to start towards the end of 2014 December 2013 45

ith five rounds at five different circuits already completed, the stage was set for the MG Car Club’s season finale. Snetterton Circuit in Norfolk was the scene of the action, and with a number of championships still to be decided it was always going to be a thrilling adventure – and we were certainly not disappointed. An eventful start to the weekend saw two of the MG Trophy boys sent into a whirl, when their cars rolled during qualifying at Murray’s. With much work ahead of them, Dan Jones and Tom Butler, both driving MG ZR 160s, had a race on their hands to repair their stricken machines in time for their first race. Jones needed a new roll cage in record time, and with Trophy regular Paul Luti unable to race at Snetterton, the Dreadnought Racing team were at a loss and decided to lend their skills to help Jones’ cause. One of the weekend’s highlights saw the Peter Best Insurance Challenge (PBIC) race combined with the FW 46 www.cprmag.co.uk

4x4 BCV8 Championship. An impressive grid for each series gave a tremendous field of different machinery and two very exciting races in one. With the BCV8 machines stationed at the front end of the grid, it was Spencer McCarthy who got the jump on Russell McCarthy from the off, with both drivers piloting MGBGT V8s. However, as the race unfolded the pair engaged in a gripping high speed chase, which saw them 48 www.cprmag.co.uk

swap positions countless times. With virtually nothing between them, it was Russell who edged ahead when it counted, to steal victory from his namesake. Rob Spencer (MGBGTV8) wrestled his way to third place, ahead of Ian Prior (MGBGTV8) and early front runner Ollie Neaves (MGB V8). Alan Brooke in his Rover Metro GTi was the dominant force in the PBIC section of the race, finishing 19 seconds ahead of

his nearest challenger James Walpole in his MGB Roadster. The latter held off Shaun Holmes (MGCGT) for second place, whilst Holmes had his hands full with the chasing James Darby just over one second adrift in fourth place. Racing on their own on day two, the PBIC boys again provided a thrilling end to their season, with Brooke crowned victor once more, chased home by Holmes.


With Darby soon up into third place and Peter Bramble (MG ZR 160) settled in fourth, the scrap to watch was that between Nick Arden in his MG Maestro EFi, and Richard Wilson and James Walpole in their MGB Roadsters. Keen to enhance his title bid, Walpole made the most of a brave move to elevate himself above Arden and Wilson. With a fifth place finish to his name, Walpole became the 2013 PBIC Champion, despite

Bray again dominated in race two, by taking the final race win of the season, but it was Andrew Ashton who secured the 2013 MG Trophy championship title. Bray led the way into turn one on the opening tour, chased once again by Makar and Cole. Before long, Cole was again the man to watch when he dived past Makar for second. As he trailed Bray by just 0.8 seconds we were in for another thrilling Trophy finale, but Bray was soon able to break free, leaving Cole 50 www.cprmag.co.uk

and Makar to battle amongst themselves. With just two minutes to go, Makar saw his chance to retake second place, as he and Cole wrestled their way to the chequered flag. Alistair Rushforth romped to victory in Class C, ahead of Richard Marsh and Butler. Jones again succumbed to bad luck when his car suffered more damage ending his season abruptly.

An entertaining outing for the first Lackford Engineering MG Midget & Sprite Challenge

saw David Weston crowned victorious, ahead of Edward Reeve and Martin Morris after 13 laps of full throttle, high speed action. After a synchronised spin from Pippa Cow and Timothy Dallas-Cairns on lap one at Nelson, the race was immediately neutralised by appearance of the safety car. At the restart it was Reeve who leapt to the fore, soon followed by pole sitter Paul Sibley. As Reeve, Sibley and Weston toured the circuit it was Sibley’s turn for some bad luck, when he suddenly slowed before diving into the pits. With a potential recurring throttle problem the cause of his woes, Sibley was forced out of the running, leaving Reeve and Weston to battle it out. With the final few minutes soon upon us, Reeve and Weston swapped places numerous times on route to the chequered flag. However, as the flag fell it was Weston who had edged ahead, just in time to taste victory. With Sibley unable to take the

start in race two, it was down to Reeve, Weston and Neat to decipher honours. Early leader Reeve was soon forced to relinquish his throne when Weston charged past into the lead. This left Reeve in a thrilling tussle for second place with Martin Morris and Tom Neat. Reeve’s position soon came under threat once again, when Morris elevated himself to second place, before retiring shortly afterwards on lap five. Before long, the rhythm began to settle down, as Weston again romped to victory. Reeve held onto a somewhat solitary second, whilst newly crowned 2013 Champion Neat completed his season with a third place. Richard Bridge led home Cow and Phil Attwood, whilst Richard Perry overcame his intermittent fuel gremlin from Saturday to finish seventh. Nicolas Maduz completed Class E, while John Bridge scored Class D honours. A close battle in Class C saw

The early stages were very much a battle between Richard’s Racers and the Morgan Magic team, with the latter eventually gaining control. However, as the lead Morgan 4/4 of Tim Harrison led the way, his pace was haltered when the safety car was released after John Brown hit the barrier at Coram in the MG ZR 190. repair the barrier, conditions were kept steady for 18 minutes, before racing resumed. As the relay portion of the race came into play, the pitlane became a hive of activity, with other drivers thrown into the mix. Untouched by their rivals for many laps, the Morgan Magic team stretched their advantage to 58 seconds, until another safety car appearance dampened their hopes once more. The shared Trophy Guys car of Malcolm Gammons and John Brown suffered more bad luck when it lost a wheel, bringing out the pace car. As the safety car returned to the pits Morgan Magic

followed for yet another stop, relinquishing the lead with just one hour to go. With free reign, the V8 Wide Boys happily took control, ahead of Morgan Magic. After developing a gap it was the V8 Wide Boys’ turn to have their pace hampered, when the safety car appeared for the third time. Despite the hurdles, the V8 Wide Boys held onto their superior position on track courtesy of their drivers Ollie Neaves, Paul White, Simon Cripps and Rob Spencer in the MGB V8. Morgan Magic closed the gap to the leaders in the final five minutes, but settled for second as time ran out. M Sport Racing finished third, ahead of The Trophy Guys

in fourth place. With the handicap results taken into consideration, it was Team CMC’s David Coulthard (no, not that David Coulthard! Ed), Julia Penfold, Helen Waddington, David Williams and Dan Surridge who came out on top, ahead of Stuart’s Muskateers and M Sport Racing. The chequered flag has now fallen on the 2013 MG Car Club season. It seems like only yesterday we all arrived at Donington Park with new machinery ready for a brand new season. Well done to all of the 2013 Champions, and a big thank you to all drivers, teams and family members. Here’s to a successful and entertaining 2014 season!

Jaguar XFR-S If you like performance cars, but need four seats instead of two, then the Jaguar XFR-S might be just what you are looking for. Chris McEvoy tries out Jaguar’s new speedy saloon.

T

he new Jaguar F-Type is a roaring success, quite literally if you get the ‘S’ engined version. However if you want a full on performance saloon instead of a two-seater sports car, what do you choose? On the face of it there’s plenty to pick from. BMW offer their highly respected ‘M’ series machinery, 58 www.cprmag.co.uk

Audi have their ‘S’ derivatives paired with Quattro 4 wheel drive to keep you out of the scenery when the going gets slippery. Or Mercedes-Benz can satiate your desires with something speedy from their AMG catalogue. All of these are very respectable and depending on your personal tastes, preferences and bank

balance would be acceptable. But what if you wanted something less, well, Teutonic. A car from a manufacturer that had a long racing pedigree. A car that was able to provide style and grace, wouldn’t be daunting to drive in traffic, but one you could drive as if your trousers were on fire when the occasion arose.


Let me present the Jaguar XFR-S, a hotter version of... yes you’ve guessed it...the XFR. Using the 5.0 litre V8 supercharged 540 bhp engine from the XKR-S this offers a modest 39 bhp increase over the standard XFR but the torque goes from 625Nm to 680Nm. All this propelling a vehicle of some 1,980Kg solely

through the rear wheels. To help tame some this power the rear suspension has been modified over its lesser brother and the rear differential has been given a different set of instructions to its ‘brain’ to help the preserve their custom wrapped Pirelli wrapped 20 inch wheels. The overall result is a top speed of 185+mph

and a quoted 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds. Thus making it Jaguar’s quickest saloon, ever. But is it too much? On a relatively short first drive using public roads on a sunny afternoon, a full test of the cars dynamic abilities wasn’t possible or appropriate. It was however long enough to know that with all that power and December 2013 59

significant levels of electronic intervention in ‘normal mode’, a level of respect was needed. On a wet road, wintry conditions, or simply pressing on in a determined manner, I suspect that new levels of driving smoothness will be essential. So, is it better than the 60 www.cprmag.co.uk

standard (the word ‘standard’ is being stretched a bit here admittedly) XFR? Maybe. It’s just as smooth in the city traffic traffic and doesn’t suffer ride degradation due to its revised suspension, wheels and tyres. If you have the necessary skills to tame the beast, then I’m sure it will

reward you. One thing I did find annoying was the boot mounted rear spoiler. It seriously impaired the rear view, and in a car like this you’d certainly want to know who was behind you, especially if it had any form of blue lights! I’ll reserve my judgment until I’ve tried both on the track, and an offer from Jaguar to do this soon is imminent. And so it came to pass, the invitation from Jaguar to try a selection of their MY14 vehicles arrived. Pointing the trusty Volvo in a south westerly direction I set off towards Thruxton. I paused briefly in the nearby town of Stockbridge, which I’m told by those that know, is a Mecca for the ancient sport of fly fishing for trout. Quite why you’d want to spend hours

up to your waist in a cold river waving a very expensive bamboo stick about with a few strands of coloured cotton tied to it with very exotic (read expensive) string, covering a bent pin, in the hope that a recalcitrant fish will be fooled into thinking that lunch has arrived, is a mystery to me. The alternative of a visit to the fresh fish counter of your local supermarket would seem much the better option? However, the plus side of towns like this, the sort that are frequented by the Hunter wellied Range Rover set, is that there’s usually a very good deli somewhere on the High Street. In Stockbridge it’s actually a deli/bistro/ fishmonger called ‘Thyme and Tides’. Their speciality which I can highly recommend is their range of Scotch Eggs. If

paintwork. So seat adjusted, belted in, ‘press to start’, select D for Drive, head out of the pits, foot to the loud pedal, and with all 540 horses trying to escape through the rear tyres in one go, we’re off. Needless to say it’s fast, very fast. Through the Campbell - Cobb - Segrave sequence it’s a real learning experience. The extra 39 bhp over the standard XFR is one thing, but that extra 55Nm of torque is something else. Keep the supercharger on-song, and the extra thrust is amazing; there’s an instant response to the request for more speed and the horizon gets closer with alarming rapidity. On the only part of the circuit that resembles a straight - Brooklands - speeds

A few laps in and its becoming clear that this is a car that requires respect. Total concentration is the order of the day to fully enjoy it, anything less and trouble can appear very quickly. And that is probably its downfall. Yes it’s a fast comfortable saloon, that can complete laps of a racing circuit as easily as a trip into town with the family. Or transport you across Europe with ease. But that power is seductive, and the car knows it. It eggs you on with its sound track and toys with your deeper emotions to go just that little bit quicker. So

unless you’re prepared to take it on in a daily challenge and give it the full attention it demands, the regular XFR will deliver pleasure, satisfaction and ultimately a more relaxed experience. Despite what spoof rock band Spinal Tap might suggest, you don’t always need to turn the volume up to 11. The founder of Jaguar Cars, Sir William Lyons, is oft quoted as saying that ‘our cars are ‘the closest we have come to making something that feels alive’. In the case of the XFR-S 64 www.cprmag.com

they’ve certainly succeeded. It’s up to you to choose whether you want one that will purr or one that might just bite your head off. This was reinforced later in the afternoon when I had the opportunity to try the V6 and V8 versions of the F-Type back to back on the circuit. Although the V8 had more power the V6 proved to be the easiest to get the best out of. One thing is worth considering though. What if they put this engine in the Sportbrake version of the XF? That might

really give their Teutonic rivals something to worry about. I asked a Jaguar engineer if this was something they’d considered. He assured me that due to the different set-up of the rear suspension on the shooting brake, the different handling characteristics required for such vehicles and other technical challenges, this wasn’t on the agenda in any way at all. Definitely not something Jaguar was considering now or in the future. So expect to see it in about six months then.

Spa Weekend (with a difference!)

When our resident lady racing driver Sarah Bennett-Baggs says she is going for a “Spa weekend,” it doesn’t involve Jacuzzis and beauty treatments. No, her’s is a spa weekend with a difference as it involves a Porsche 911, several gallons of fuel, and some highoctane racing at Belgium’s famous Spa Francorchamps circuit.

he Classic Spa 6hr Endurance weekend is for me one of the highlights of the Historic sportscar-racing calendar, a meeting not to be missed if you love your classic racing. So, to get the chance to race at this event is an

opportunity not to let slip by. Having secured my entry for the 1 hour British Sports GT and Saloons race, I paid my fees and loaded up the Nissan Navara complete with all the racing paraphernalia, a set each of wet and dry tyres, and

proceeded to set-off solo on the 360 mile trip from Herts to Spa Francorchamps in Belgium. After a late night ferry and some rather frustrating French road diversions, I found myself sitting in a road block, lost in the middle of


northern France wondering why I thought this was a great idea. But only an hour or two later I found my rather basic Belgium farmhouse B&B (more cowshed) and was tucked up in bed. Wednesday was at least

dry, as I got back on the road towards Brussels. Late morning I caught up with my friends from Race100 who had stopped at a services near Spa to unload their Healey 100 and drive it on the road the last 40 miles to run in the

engine. A brave decision given the massive downpour which arrived shortly after they set off!

It’s a small world and when you’re towing a bright pink Porsche you can expect to get a few funny looks and a few toots! Thursday was the pre race test day and with 45 minute sessions costing around €150 euros, you choose a session 70 www.cprmag.co.uk

and go for it. I picked the only session when it rained – not ideal, but I got enough running time to feel like I was back in the groove. I spent the rest of the day running around trying to find the scrutineers to get the car signed off for racing. When I did finally catch up with

them they seemed more concerned about the brake lights and indicators working than anything else. I didn’t like to mention I probably wasn’t going to be using much of either in the race but whatever!

Scary Laps Qualifying for the British Sports GT and Saloons endurance race was at 9am on the Friday morning and when we all pitched up at the circuit it was horrible. Wet and drizzly a typical Spa start to the day! It wasn’t quite wet enough to bolt on my new superwet tyres

so I raised the cold pressures of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups and set off. Despite the conditions, there were 77 starters to the classic British Sports car race, and after a couple of laps of tip toeing round to be sure the surface layer of water had gone, followed by a few laps of mostly going sideways trying

to find some grip, I gathered up the reins for the final 10 minutes, held my breath and went for the scary laps. There is a general notion in motorsport that if it feels fine you’re not going quick enough and you have to push through ‘fine’ until you reach ‘Oh sh*t!’. And when that twitch from the rear comes at over 100

mph through Blanchimont it really is quite a heart stopping moment. But this is why we do it! I qualified 29th overall, not as high as I had hoped. But then looking at the grid layout there were still going to be 48 cars behind me and there are no prizes for chucking it into the scenery in qualifying! I was happy I had driven it to the grip limits and survived and that’s all you can do.

Mist...Drizzle...Rain... The race was scheduled for 9am on Sunday morning and whilst these early morning schedules are not the best times for Spa, it does give you the whole of Saturday to enjoy the feature 6hr race and the weekend! I arrived at the track at 7.30am after a fairly sleepless December 2013 71

night. It was bone dry, (small girlie yelp for joy) – Perfect conditions, in fact, so perfect I decided to lower the starting pressures on the sticky semi slick tyres, topped her up with fuel and set off for the grid. Whilst gridding up, the mist arrived, followed by drizzle and then down came the hard rain. – Bu**er! A couple of 72 www.cprmag.co.uk

cars actually left the grid to change to wet tyres and start the race from the pit-lane. A nice option, one I may even have considered if I had a full on pit crew with whizz guns at the ready, but since my pit crew consisted of one tweed flat capped Race100 driver with a copper hammer I thought ‘best I stay put’!

Ball Of Spray We got two warm–up laps on our rolling start to remind us how slippy it was in the wet before the lights flicked to green and 77 cars all disappeared up the steep incline of Eau Rouge in a giant ball of spray. The Porsche was spinning up and over-steering


all over the place. I lost heaps of places at the start; to be honest I was just clinging on with my cold semi slicks, trying to stay on the black stuff! I could see the weather starting to improve, so as soon as the pit window opened I came in to make my oneminute mandatory stop. My female logic thinking if I am going to sit in the pit lane I may as well do it during the wet bit! The second half of the race was like a completely different day. Every lap was different as the circuit started to dry out allowing you to squeeze the throttle just fractions more lap by lap. I had a few dices with

Sweat Monster At the end of the hour I finished 26th overall, 4th in class the race was won by an MGB GT V8 driven by Spencer McCarthy. As one of the three lady drivers in the race we were all asked to make our way to the podium at the end of the race. Now, Spa is not a small place and the inner Paddocks are effectively built on the side of a mountain so

picture a lady sweat-monster emerging from a pink Porshe after an hours hard racing. I dutifully made my way up the 300 steps or so from the lower paddock to the new F1 Paddock and to the Podium. When I got there the Championship organiser asked all the ladies to present the trophies to the winners 1, 2 and 3. Had I just been dragged up here to glamorise the podium? Well, more fool them! Anyway all three ladies dutifully did as were told and as the winners December 2013 73

The owner of the largest collection of Matchbox model vehicles in the world can now drive one vehicle from his collection on the road, after acquiring the ultimate ‘Matchbox van’ at Barons’ sale at Sandown Park on October 29. The 1932 Austin Seven van was transformed in 1937 into an advertising vehicle for England’s Glory matches. This charming little van proved irresistible to the UK-based collector, who paid £10,700 for his latest model. The highest selling lot at the sale was a beautiful bright yellow 1998 Ferrari F355 convertible, which sold for £30,250, despite being a very late entry and having no current MoT. But most hotly-contested was the 1977 Daimler Double Six Coupé. With an estimate of £2,000 to £3,000, the car romped up to £5,780, with lively telephone bidding driving it to almost twice its top estimate. Three of the four restoration projects found new owners, who can now look forward to a very satisfactory winter as they tackle their latest vehicular challenge. The 1957 MGA Roadster achieved £4,268, while the 1969 Daimler (Jaguar) 250 V8 Saloon and 1954 Ford Prefect/105E sold for £692 and £800 respectively. When the final hammer fell, 70% of the cars on offer had sold, along with 95% of the automobilia. Happily, forewarned is forearmed, and Barons got early access to Sandown Park on the Sunday, and the majority of the lots were safely tucked up in the Esher Hall a day earlier than planned. Traditionally a very popular event, it is held in the 25,000sq/ft Surrey Hall at Sandown Park and is the ideal place for collectors to treat themselves to a ‘new’ old car, or to say goodbye to an old four-wheeled friend to free up space in the garage for 2014. A stunning collection of home grown classics helped Silverstone Auctions achieve an all-time record at its sale at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show where it successfully hammered away an amazing 76 per cent of the vehicle lots of on offer, for a premium inclusive total of more than £2.7 million. The star of the sale was a magnificent 1965 Aston Martin DB5 saloon. Presented in the iconic Silver Birch colour, the car more than lived up to its presale interest, eventually fetching a premium inclusive £362,250, more than £80,000 over its lower estimate. Not to be outdone was another amazing Aston Martin, a delightful 1958 DB2/4 MKIII, also surpassing its lower estimate by £70,000, selling for £220,800. “I’m absolutely thrilled by these fantastic results which have helped us to a new record,” enthused Nick Whale, managing director, Silverstone Auctions. “We worked extremely hard to put together arguable our best ever catalogue, and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to achieve such excellent prices for so many of our vendors.” Aside from the Aston Martins, other British classics also

proved extremely popular. A Lister Jaguar XJS 7.0 litre Le Mans Coupe was the subject of an intensely fought bidding battle, eventually selling for £57,500, more than twice its pre-sale estimate. A 1950 Jaguar XK120 Roadster fetched £86,825, more than £19,000 over its lower estimate; a 1962 Jaguar Mk.II 3.8 achieved £55,200 and a 1960 Jaguar XK150 Fixed Head Coupe also sold above estimate, for £42,837. Meanwhile two fast Fords proved that iconic 80’s cars could well be among the next crop of classics to significantly rise in value. An amazing 1985 Ford RS200 sold for more than £10,000 over its lower estimate, reaching £105,800, and a 1986 Sierra RS Cosworth, formerly the sole transport of Cosworth co-founder Mike Costin, fetched a healthy £27,600. This DVD has been produced following a remarkable event held to mark the 75th anniversary of the 1938 Cork Grand Prix; the first and only Grand Prix to be staged in the country. The idea of staging the race came from a committee of local citizens keen to promote motoring and motorsport in Southern Ireland. The race that was held in Cork 75 years ago has gone down in racing folklore as being a demanding competition that challenged drivers to the max. It also featured Prince Bira of Siam driving in a Maserati 8CM which he would eventually guide to a very respectable second place overall. It was held on April 28, at the Carrigrohane Circuit, a street circuit on the western outskirts of the city of Cork. It was run to International Formula regulations, which was the equivalent to Formula1 today, and was attended by teams such as Bugatti, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Delahaye with drivers like Tazio Nuvolari, Rene Dreyfus, Jeane Pierre Wimille, Guiseppe Farina and the previously mentioned Prince Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanubandh or B. Bira. The race was eventually won by French driver René Dreyfus driving a Delahaye 145 for team Ecurie Bleue. Bringing things right up to the present day, 2013 marked the 75th anniversary of the Cork Grand Prix and the Munster Vintage Motor Cycle & Car Club (MVMCCC), with the assistance of Cork Motor Club, decided it would be fitting to hold an event to remember Irelands only Grand Prix. Some of the roads which made up the original circuit were closed off for the event which attracted cars and drivers from all over Europe. Six of the cars which took part in the 1938 race made a triumphant return to the ‘Emerald Isle’

and among these was Jean-Pierre Wimille’s wonderful Bugatti 59/50B. This DVD is a captivating mix of footage from the 1938 race cut with film from the anniversary event. The period footage gives a remarkable glimpse at motor-racing in those heady pre-war days, while the more recent sections show the beautifully restored cars, the wonderful location and of course all the Irish charm. It is a very watchable DVD and if you are a fan of historic motorsport, then this is definitely one for you.

It is a common problem, and hardly surprising since the average classic car seems to have miles of wiring and millions of connectors that can prove daunting to even an experienced restorer. The electrics on the MGB began life in fairly simple form, but as the model evolved through its 19 year production cycle, the wiring became progressively more complicated. Author Rick Astley tried to make sense of it all a produced an excellent book on the subject, and it is the new updated and revised edition of his book which I have before me now. This really is the ‘Bible’ of MGB electrics and don’t think for one minute that this is just a book for restorers. If you own an MGB, you should have a copy of this on your bookshelf. It contains lots of clear, easy-to-read, practical advice of how to carry out repairs or maintenance on the MGB electrics, or even replace the whole lot if that is what you desire. The text is supported by clear photos and colour diagrams which are much easier to follow than the black & white offerings in the original factory workshop manuals. The author also covers basic electrical theory and safe working practises, as well as suggested modifications to improve electrical performance on the MGB. Each topic is covered with a step-by-step explanation of exactly what is required and I found it incredibly easy to follow. It covers all MGB models from the first ones in 1962 right up to the last cars to come out of the Abingdon factory in 1981. It is important to choose the right car for your skill level otherwise it could prove too big a job and end up as yet another aborted project. If your car of choice happens to be one of the popular Triumph TR models, then this excellent book by Roger Williams will guide you through the whole process from buying to building and beyond. He draws on his vast experience to offer a detailed overview of what is required to restore the 4-cylinder TRs, which all share more or less the same chassis with the exception of the TR4A. ISBN: 9781861268617 Available From: www.crowood.com There has been a vast array of books written about the Triumph Spitfire sports car and its tourer cousin the GT6. Some are good, while others and best forgotten about, but thankfully this book is one of the better ones. It was first published in 2006 but the publisher - Crowood Press - is now selling it at a reduced price of just £11.99 which makes it very good value for money. Little needs saying about the two models as they were among Triumph’s most successful models throughout the 1960s and 70s, and both cars remain as popular today as when there were in production. This long-term affection was ensured not only by their attractive styling and lively performance, but also by their straightforward construction and the ease with which they can be maintained. Both cars are excellent ‘starter classics’ for a beginner. John Thomason’s meticulously researched book charts their development, covering for each the many changes to the body and chassis, engine and engine bay, interior and transmission and suspension. Thoroughly crossreferenced, this is an easy-to-use and quick reference guide, invaluable to owners wishing to maintain or restore their cars to be as near factory specification as possible. Perhaps the only negative aspect to this book is that the vast majority of the 500 accompanying photos are reproduced in black & white, which is a little disappointing but perhaps not surprising given the original publication date. There are around 20 colour pictures too, but not enough to really lift the book. It’s a shame, because the author has done a splendid job of writing a very comprehensive guide to the originality of these cars, but if you are a Triumph fan, you wont be deterred by the lack of colour. Overall this is a good book which will make a welcome addition to any Triumph enthusiast’s collection, especially those owners with concours cars, but at just over a tenner, you can’t really go far wrong!
