Yeah, yeah….we know, another Ferrari on the front cover! It’s the second month running that we have had exotic metal from the Italian manufacturer on the cover, but boy does it look good. Everyone here in the CPR office was drooling with envy when Steve Slater announced that he had driven the Italia, and from reading through his excellent article, it really does sound like quite a car! You might also have noticed that we have made this issue into a ‘Performance Special.’ It wasn’t really intentional, but with the Italia article coinciding with the excellent Autosport International show and even the unveiling of the new Caterham SP300R, it seemed like the obvious thing to do. Apologies to Classic and Retro car fans…we will make it up to you next month! Isn’t it strange how a simple fluctuation in the economy can have an effect on the way we view our cars? For example, take the astronomical petrol prices that we are being forced to pay at the moment. When the prices were somewhat more sensible, owners of more economical classic cars would often look with envy at those with high performance cars fitted with big, powerful V8 engines. Now it is the other way around. Those with the gas guzzling cars are wishing that their cars had the same fuel consumption as a Morris Minor or Triumph Herald! The high prices we are paying at the pumps are a result of crude oil now costing $90 per barrel, and it looks like it could remain that high for some time to come. That means that here in the UK, we are currently paying nearly £6.00 for a gallon of petrol – ouch. Of course, the high cost of oil is having a global effect and even drivers in the USA are starting to feel the pinch. Petrol in the US currently costs around $3.22 per gallon and motorists are far from happy. However, if you happen to be reading this in the USA, spare a thought for the poor old Brits. At the current exchange rate, UK petrol prices equate to approximately $9.50 per gallon! Make you wonder…doesn’t it?

Fancy A ‘New’ Interceptor? classic Italian looks, modern engineering and American heart on British roads!

Deliveries of the new Jensen Interceptor R have started at Oxfordshire-based manufacturer and restorer Jensen International Automotive (JIA), which set up business in May last year. The Jensen Interceptor R is JIA’s modern interpretation of the much loved British classic from the swinging ‘60s and glamorous ‘70s. Each Interceptor R is hand-built from an original donor car, refurbished and treated to modern specifications, boasting a GM Corvette LS3 V8 engine, independent rear suspension, brandnew transmission and braking systems, and a luxurious new interior. Jensen International Automotive has the financial backing and know-how of Carphone Warehouse’s founder and chairman Charles Dunstone, who joined its board of directors earlier last year. “Seeing the first Interceptor grand tourers of 2011 being delivered is a great way to start the year,” said Tony Banham, JIA’s Managing Director. “Our current production facilities are capable of achieving quality levels completely unattainable only a couple of years ago. We have managed to produce a modern Jensen without compromising on its spirit or heritage.” The new Jensen Interceptor R, powered by a 6.2 V8 producing 429bhp, can reach a top speed of 160mph and hit 0-60mph in less than 4.5sec. Prices start from £105k, with a five-month building schedule.

Derek Gardner Dies Aged 79

Derek Gardner, designer of the famous six-wheeled Tyrrell P34 F1 car, has died aged 79. He entered the world of Formula 1 while he was carrying out advanced transmission work for Harry Ferguson Research, including development work on four-wheel drive systems for Matra in the late 60s. Ken Tyrrell asked Gardner to work on the V12 powered Tyrrell 001 F1 car which made its racing debut in the 1970 Canadian Grand Prix. However, it is for the 1976 Tyrrell P34 that Gardner will be remembered for. He designed it with four small front wheels to minimise frontal area without decreasing grip. It made its first appearance at the Spanish GP in 1976 and was raced by Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler. 6 CPR Magazine

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Revealed Fitted With ‘Magic Sky Control’ Roof Panel

German-manufacturer Mercedes-Benz has released pictures of its third generation SLK sports car. The revised model features a restyled front end that mirrors the new corporate styling used on other new Mercedes cars. The new SLK will be available with a choice of engines, ranging from the 181bhp SLK200 or 201bhp SLK250 to the 302bhp 3.5-litre V6. In addition, the manufacturer says that the car will be equipped with a ‘panorama vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL, which switches between light and dark transparency at the touch of a button.’ “The new SLK embodies the role of the trend-setter like no other car”, says Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “I am convinced that with its passionate design, its high-quality interior and its modesty at the fuel station it will continue to provide an enormous amount of fun on the road in future, too, consolidating its status as a cult roadster.”

Holy Smoke! Batmobile Sells On eBay Rumour has it that the the Caped Crusader is not a happy man. He has been forced off the road and on to the foot paths following the sale of his favourite Batmobile on auction site eBay. The aggressive looking car was one of three identical vehicles used in the 1992 film Batman Returns. The main feature of the car is powerful jet engine that propels it at blistering speeds, allowing Batman to rapidly travel the roads of Gotham City in pursuit of bad guys. At least, that’s what it does in the movie. In reality, the car is actually powered by a 200hp Chevy 350 V8 and the large jet intake at the front of the car is just for show. Bidding was fierce during the auction, and the car eventually sold for a whopping $370,100. A bespoke trailer was included in the sale, although the new owner will have to build his own Bat Cave to house the iconic car. February 2011 7

Porsche To Build Cars In China? New Cajun SUV To Be First Chinese Porsche?

Supercar maker Porsche is rumoured to be moving some of its production work from Germany to China. The German company is aiming to produce 200,000 cars per year and outsourcing some of the work would help it meet that target. Speaking to US business magazine Focus, Porsche’s CEO Matthias Mueller said that a decision could be taken soon. “This year, we are going to discuss whether to start assembly in Asia or North America”, said Mueller. “The main thing is that the car has ‘Engineered by Porsche’ on it. Where it is produced is no longer so important.”

Race Retro Returns To Golden Age Of Rallying Classic Rally Cars To Race Again

A delectable selection of rally cars from the 1970s to the present day are out in force at this year’s Race Retro, held at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry from 25-27 February, demonstrating rear wheel, front wheel and four wheel-drive action on the Live Rally Stage, sponsored by Hero. The live action, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, sees rally ace Miki Biasion behind the wheel of the Lancia Delta Integrale he drove in the 1990s, showcasing the Italian car maker that 2011’s Race Retro is also celebrating. Joining the celebrations is the Lancia Fulvia HF, an authentic recreation of a 1970s works rally car driven by Tony Graham on his return from Monte Historique. Also on the starting line is a Vauxhall Chevette HS works rally car, hopefully with original driver Jimmy McRae at the wheel in support of his charity, built by Bill Blydenstein’s famous Dealer Team Vauxhall (DTV) outfit at Shepreth in 1978 and run by works manager Gerry Johnstone. The car, in Jimmy’s hands, competed in numerous Rallies in 1978, and achieved 7th in Mintex, 2nd on the Circuit of Ireland, as well as starts on the Welsh and Scottish events. ‘Jumping’ Jeff Williamson will debut his recently acquired ex works FIA Group A Mercedes 190 Cosworth, built for Danny Snobek to drive in the 1987 Monte Carlo Rally. This is one of only seven cars built. The rally programme was subsequently abandoned when these two wheel drive cars were deemed uncompetitive against the crop of new four wheel drive cars. They were subsequently used for the European touring car racing series run on behalf of M-B by Danny Snobeck Racing. The Firenza V8, a recreation of the 1972 South African GM Dealer Team car used by Jan Hettema, will also make another appearance after its debut in 2010. Only 100 of these 360 bhp cars were built as ‘homologation specials’ to compete against South Africa Fords, V8 engined Perana (Capri). Hettema himself gave builder Mick Strafford a great deal of technical advice and help with original details during the building of this car to ensure it is a faithful representation of the original works car. Also in action will be three of the small yet mighty Metro 6R4s, which remain as popular with rally fans as they were 25 years ago. They are joined by two Ford RS200s, a pair of Opel Manta 400s, an Audi Quattro Sport and a Peugeot 205 T16 – models representing the pinnacle of mid-‘80s rallying. There will also be an example of its arch-rival Ford Escort Mk2, a highly-rare Nissan 240RS and a Triumph TR7 V8. A brace of Talbot Sambas revives ‘80s-style club rallying and proves they can still be on the pace. The pinnacle of ‘70s rallying might is represented by Lancia, Race Retro’s celebrated marque, with a Stratos being joined by a Fiat 131 Abarth and, from the 1980s, a Fiat Strada Abarth. And big car rallying is represented by a 1986 Rover Vitesse, this rear-wheel drive V8 providing ample evidence that family cars can be on the face just as much as cars with a more sporting pedigree. There will also be Historic Kart demonstrations including an appearance by racing legend Johnny Herbert at the controls on Sunday! Adult ticket prices start from just £20 for Friday and Saturday, £15 for Sunday when booking in advance. Children’s tickets are £5 on Friday or Saturday and free on Sunday. Parking is also free throughout. The show is open from 9.30am each day and closes at 5.30pm on Friday and Saturday and 4.30pm on Sunday. Lotus Begin Testing type 125 Car Tests On Italian Circuit The Lotus T125 track car made its first official test runs at the Vallelunga circuit near Rome, Italy, on January 19. Described by Lotus as “an F1 inspired customer race car,” the machine was put through its paces by ex-F1 driver Jean Alesi and Lotus factory test driver James Rossiter. Commenting on the test, Lotus’ Director of Motorsport Operations, Miodrag Kotur said: “We’re very happy with the initial performance of the car, there are still some things that we want to improve on but that’s natural at this stage and that’s exactly why we test. Between them, Jean Alesi and James Rossiter have an incredible wealth of experience and they put this to good use in Vallelunga.” Speaking after his first outing, Jean Alesi said: “Testing is always a big challenge, it’s a different kind of pressure to racing but you still can’t relax for a second. I enjoyed my first outing in the car, it’s great to be involved at such a crucial stage in the cars’ development, I really feel like I can help to make this car as fun to drive as possible.” James Rossiter added: “The Type 125 is unique, it’s intense, it’s extreme and it’s very raw. I can honestly say that I think it’s the closest a ‘normal’ person can get to driving an F1 car. Vallelunga was great, we learnt a lot about the car there and I’m really looking forward to the next test in a few days, it will be really interesting to see how the car responds to the conditions of a very different track.”

Shanghai Circuit waits For Last Minute Decision FIA Demands Improvements To Track

Officials at China’s Shanghai International Circuit face an agonising wait to see if the circuit will meet the standards required to host the planned Formula 1 race. The venue has been added to the 2011 F1 calendar but only as a provisional entry and is subject to a new licence being issued for the circuit. Late last year, the circuit owners were told that the track surface and rain drainage must be improved before a new licence is granted for this year’s race. The Chinese authorities are confident that the work will be completed on time, but the final FIA inspection won’t take place until March, just weeks before the scheduled race on April 17. A spokesperson for the FIA commented: “The Shanghai International Circuit has confirmed that all work as requested by the FIA will be carried out and should be completed by the end of February. Before a new licence can be issued, the FIA will carry out a final inspection in March”

Porsche Carrera World Cup at the Nürburgring Race Series Heads To Germany For First Time

The Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship features a race at the Nürburgring on June 25, the first time the calendar has included a round outside the UK and Ireland. This will be a Carrera Cup race with a difference, however, for the Porsche Carrera World Cup will be the largest ever 911 race, and will showcase both the Carrera Cups and GT3 Cup Challenges (for 911 GT3 Cup race cars from 2007 –2010) from around the world. It is anticipated that up to 200 Porsche drivers will compete in this remarkable six lap 100 mile event. The Porsche Carrera World Cup is the key support race to the 2011 Nürburgring 24 Hour race (June 25-26), an event that counts as one of the greatest motor sport events in the world. Consequently, an estimated 250,000 spectators will watch the Porsche Carrera World Cup, with many more tuning in to view on television. The Porsche Carrera Cup GB will continue to support the British Touring Car Championship by having two races at all BTCC race weekends with the exception of Croft, which has been replaced by the N6rburgring round on the schedule. With such a large entry, the starting grids for the Porsche Carrera World Cup will be separated into three groups based on qualifying lap times and these will start at pre-determined intervals. There will be a ‘race within a race’ for Carrera Cup GB competitors based on the established Pro, Pro-Aml and Pro-Am2 class structure – and while the Nürburgring race will attract the same points as a single round of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship, double prize money will be on offer. In addition to being a round of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB, there will be an additional class for invited GT3 Cup Challenge competitors from the UK, with an invitation offered only to drivers who race at the three rounds prior to the Porsche Carrera World Cup; April 9 Brands Hatch, April 24 Croft, May 29 Donington Park. The Nürburgring is considered by many drivers to be the ultimate race circuit, and at 16 miles long and with over 120 corners, its reputation is well-deserved. Porsche Cars GB will be working with all Carrera Cup GB drivers participating in the Carrera World Cup to ensure they are given every opportunity to ‘learn’ the track prior to the race. Since the first N6rburgring 24 Hour race in 1970, Porsche has recorded an unrivalled tally of ten outright victories and in line with the Porsche ‘track to road’ philosophy successive generations of Porsche road cars have been tested and developed around the challenging circuit.

Flooding Damages MGCC Queensland Headquarters

Flooding has seriously damaged the MG Car Club’s Queensland headquarters in Australia following the recent torrential rain that affected the region. Water reached a height of about 2m inside the club building, covering everything on the ground floor in a thick layer of grime. Fortunately, the water stopped just short of the upper floor area where much of the club’s material is stored. Members accessed the building for the first time on January 14, and started a huge clean-up operation. Everything from the ground floor was cleaned and the walls and floors have been washed down. The club has launched an appeal through its website asking for donations to help restore the clubrooms to their former glory, so if you would like to help, please visit the website. www.mgccq.org.au

So Good They Named It After Home...

When Ferrari produced the stunning F430, many wondered how they could possibly improve on it. Then they revealed the F458 Italia! Steve Slater takes a closer look at this miracle of Italian engineering.

hen a new Ferrari comes along, lets face it - it’s an event. The latest £170,000 Ferrari 458 Italia is perhaps even more important than that, as based on the popularity of its predecessor the F430, it is set to become the marque’s topselling model for probably the next decade. Such is Ferrari’s pride in their new model’s technological 18 CPR Magazine

innovation, creative flair, style and passion it is said that Ferrari’s Chairman, Luca di Montezemolo personally chose to pay homage to the characteristics for which Italy as a nation is renowned. The name of the car’s homeland was added to the traditional figure representing the displacement and number of cylinders. Thus was born the Ferrari 458 Italia.

A Drivers Car With cars of this price and pedigree, stunning looks, a sumptuous interior and mindboggling performance are of course a given. However what genuinely sets the 458 apart is that it is at whatever speed, a stunning drivers car, delivering levels of tacticle and aural feedback even better than the F430,

Form & Function The Pininfarina design of the 458 Italia places specific emphasis on cutting drag and maximising downforce. It just so happens to look gorgeous too. These are positioned ahead of the rear wheel arches where they use pressure differences to efficiently channel air flow to the engine bay, at the same time generating more rear downforce. The two intakes on the top of the rear wings, which you’d expect to feed the radiators, actually feed cool air for the F1

Curse Of The Italia In the months following the Italia’s introduction, a pattern of events occurred that led many to believe that Ferrari’s latest model was somehow cursed. A number of the 200mph supercars were involved in accidents that destroyed or seriously damaged the cars, while others spontaneously burst into flames and were consumed by fire. Among the victims in 2010 were: - May 20, Poland - Red 458 collides with VW Bora - June 1, Spain - Smashed red 458 seen on recovery truck - June, Czech Republic - Red 458 crashes on wet race track - July 8, Paris - Black 458 catches fire in city street - July 9, London - Yellow 458 destroyed in Heathrow warehouse fire - July 14, Switzerland - Red 458 catches fire on a mountain pass - August 9, Italy - One day old red 458 hits tree outside Ferrari factory - August 11, England - Black 458 hit crashes in wet weather - August 18, California - Red 458 catches fire in California - August 21, Czech Republic - Six hour old car runs into ditch Fingers were pointed at everything from the supernatural to witch doctors, but it seems that there was probably a far more logical explanation for these rather expensive mishaps. It turns out that most of the crashes were caused by a problem located between the seat and the steering wheel…yep, the driver. Perhaps Ferrari’s latest supercar was just a bit too ‘super’ for some drivers to handle? The fires on the other hand were caused by a technical fault. It seems that Ferrari traced the problem to materials in the wheel arch lining and heat shield. According to the manufacturer, the glue used to secure the wheel arch lining and heat shield can melt under high operating temperatures. If it then comes into contact with the exhaust, the smoldering glue can set the wheel arch liner on fire. To fix the problem, Ferrari recalled all 458 Italias and has removed the suspect liners and glue. New liners have been fitted and are held in place with bolts and screws. Ferrari says it has contacted all 458 owners informing them of the fix, which takes around half a day in the workshop. The company says that the five cars destroyed by fire due to the faulty glue will have their cars replaced “at no cost to the client.”

Top 10 British Classics What’s the quickest way to start an argument at a car club? The answer is to ask people to name their ‘top ten’ British classic cars! Everyone will have a different opinion and most will place their own particular favourite at the top of the list. So, just to stir up the a bit of controversy we thought we would have a go at listing what we think are ten of the best British classic cars of all time. Rather than just go for the prettiest or fastest, we selected our top ten based on popularity, practicality, usability and style. So, in no particular order...

1. MGB Love it or hate it, the MGB is perhaps one of the most popular classic cars of all time. It sold in huge numbers both in Europe and the USA and its production run lasted for an incredible 20 years. Available in hard and soft top versions, or GT and Roadster to give them their correct titles, the little two-seater offered affordable sportscar motoring to just about anyone who wanted it. So why was the MGB such a success? Well, it did everything adequately. It didn’t have a stunning top speed, but could keep up with modern traffic. It wasn’t the most luxurious of cars, but it was reasonably equipped and comfortable to drive. It didn’t have a huge boot (even the GT’s luggage space isn’t especially big) but it could handle all the weekly shopping or a couple of small suit cases with ease. It ticked all the boxes and did whatever you asked of it with minimum fuss – nothing more, nothing less. These days, the MGB is still popular for those very same reasons, but the standard car provides a brilliant platform for anyone who wants to make some serious performance improvements. For example, five speed gear box conversions are available ‘off the shelf’, or how about swapping the 1800 B Series engine for a 4.6 V8 unit? There are literally thousands of modifications you can make to the ‘B’ and most are quite affordable. If you want an economical, practical and enjoyable everyday classic, you won’t go far wrong with an MGB. For & Against For: Cheap parts & good range of extras Cheap insurance Easy to maintain Excellent club support Against: Under-powered Sills prone to rotting 32 CPR CPRMagazine Magazine 30

2. Triumph Spitfire Over on the other side of central England from MG’s Abingdon factory, Coventry-based manufacturer Triumph was busy producing its own attractive little sportscar – the Triumph Spitfire. Slightly smaller that the MGB, the Spitfire was based on the chassis of the company’s Herald saloon model. Production began in 1962, and ran until 1980, by which time around 310,000 had been produced. The car was designed by Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti and the first model was simply called the ‘Spitfire 4’ with the ‘4’ denoting the number of cylinders in its engine. This was followed by the MkII and MkIII; each model gained extra performance through larger engines and they benefited from styling improvements to their bodywork. The arrival of the MkIV saw a completely redesigned Spitfire with its ‘chopped off’ tail and streamlined front end, and the final version known as the ‘1500’ was basically the same car again, but with a 1.5 litre engine. Like the MGB, the Spitfire was a great ‘all-rounder.’ The later models especially felt light and responsive on the road, and the low down seating position made it feel like you were going faster than you really were! A GT version of the Spitfire was produced between 1966 – 1973 called the GT6. As the name suggests, this was powered by the 2.0 litre six-cylinder engine which was also fitted to the Triumph 2000 saloon. Although more practical than the Spitfire for touring purposes, the GT6 never sold as well as its convertible stable-mate, which was surprising considering the damp climate in its home country. For & Against For: Cheap to run Inexpensive parts Easy to maintain Very light on the controls Excellent club support Against: Soft-tops can leak Poor rear suspension on earlt cars

3. Austin Mini What can be said about the Mini that hasn’t been written a thousand times before! The tiny car has over the years become a motoring legend, a fashion icon and a symbol synonymous with Great Britain. Driven by just about every Brit with a driving licence at some time or another, the Mini was exciting to drive and economical to run. The car corners like it’s on rails and can turn on a ‘sixpence’ (Dime if you are reading this in the USA!) which made it popular with the ladies who found it easy to park, even in the smallest gaps. The MGB and Spitfire might have had long production runs, but get this; the Mini was produced from 1961 until 2000 – an incredible 39 years! What’s more, the design changed very little during that time. There was no V8 engine option and no major body restyling – the British Leyland board obviously working on the principal that ‘If it ain’t broke…don’t fix it!’ They were such a common sight on the British roads that many people don’t even regard them as a ‘classic,’ but I challenge anyone to find another car that is held in such close affection by millions of people around the world. The only other car that comes close is the Volkswagen Beetle. While the Mini is seriously cool and stylish, the Beetle is kind of quirky and slightly odd, although it is those very characteristics that have made each one of these cars motoring legends in their own right. These days, Mini’s are a much rarer sight on British roads. They have also increased in value tremendously over the last ten years and the days when you could buy a rusty, but road legal Mini for £50 are long gone. Top 10 classic? Most certainly. Icon? Definitely! For & Against For: Lots of fun to drive Excellent handling Very cheap parts Economical to run Easy to maintain Against: Lack of space under bonnet can make some jobs rather tricky!

4. MG Midget Sold alongside the larger MGB, the Midget’s name was incredibly accurate – it was tiny! Any driver even close to 6ft tall would struggle to get in and out of the car without taking their kneecap off on the doorpost. So why was it so popular? The Midget had many of the attributes of the MGB; it drove and handled well, it was reliable and it was economical to run. It also had the ‘cute’ factor which, like the Mini, made it popular with the ladies. However, the Midget was small and cheap enough to own as a second car; one that could be used as a fun runabout during the weekends when practicality wasn’t quite so important. Derived from Austin Healey’s Sprite, the early Midgets were powered (or should that be underpowered?) by a 948cc BMC A Series engine. The first cars produced in 1961 were basically re-badged versions of the Sprite. They lacked creature comforts like a heater and even external door handles, but the cars sold well and over 16,000 MkI Midgets were built. Later cars saw larger engines fitted, but perhaps the most popular model was the Midget 1275, especially the one with the round rear wheel arches. The last of the breed lost some of its charm after having black rubber bumpers fitted and the 1275 A Series engine was replaced by a Triumph 1500 unit. Strangely, the Triumph engine never seemed to be very reliable in the Midget, but the identical unit fitted in the Triumph Spitfire never gave any problems.

For & Against For: Cheap parts Cheap insurance Easy to maintain Fun to drive Excellent club support Against: Uncomfortable for tall people 1500 engines can be problematic

5. E-Type Jaguar

Ah, the E-Type. It was every small boy’s dream car in the 60s and 70s. The reason was simple; the designer had simply taken a jet fighter aircraft, hacked the wings off, welded four wheels on and stuck a Jaguar badge on its nose! At least that’s what the ‘small boys’ would have you believe. Of course, we have all grown up now, and now we know that the design came from the pencil of Malcolm Sawyer, designer at Jaguar Cars. To call it an ‘automotive work of art’ is almost doing it an injustice! Rumour has it that the great Enzo Ferrari once said it was the ‘most beautiful car he had ever seen’ and there was a guy who knew a thing or two about stunning cars. Produced between 1961 and 1975, the E-Type was fitted with a range of engines, from 3.8 litre straight-six XK engine, right up to the monstrous 5.3 litre V12 which powered the last of the breed. It was available as either a hardtop coupe, or a convertible roadster. The E-Type came with almost everything – grace, looks, power, handling, prestige, pedigree…the list is almost endless. However, all this came with a big price tag too, and the cars were bought be serious collectors and enthusiasts rather than the weekend runabout crowd. Today, the high prices still restrict ownership to mostly serious collectors, and you could buy at least four very nice MG Midgets for the price of one well sorted E-Type Roadster. Still, quality doesn’t come cheap, and who could ever tire at looking at that shape? For & Against For: Power Looks Handling Excellent spares back-up Good club support Against: Expensive to buy and run Later cars complicated to work on.

6. Triumph TR6 The Triumph TR6 was part of a line of sportscars which dated back to 1953 with the introduction of the TR2, and it was the last TR which had direct links to that very first car. The Six is a strange car; it lacks the agricultural charm of the early TR2s and 3s; it didn’t have the pretty Italian styling of the TR4/4A/5, yet it sold in huge numbers and was by far the most popular TR ever sold, at least until the TR7 came along. It was produced between 1969 and 1976 and just under 95,000 cars rolled off the production line in less than seven years. Perhaps the one characteristic that the TR6 is best known for is its sound – it has the most incredible exhaust noise. It positively roars at full throttle and even at idle it produces a low growling burble, punctuated only by the whine from its electric fuel metering unit. The TR6 was quick too, thanks to its 2.5 litre, 150bhp, fuel injected, straight-six engine which could propel the car from 0-60mph in 8.2 seconds. Its handling wasn’t bad either, although its set-up was a compromise to keep two markets happy. Drivers in the UK preferred slightly stiffer suspension, while owners in the USA favoured a softer ride. Either way, the set-up seemed to work, and with over 85% of the cars being sold in the USA, it looks like the Triumph engineers did a great job. It was replaced by the controversial TR7 which was introduced in 1975. Many traditionalists said the TR7 wasn’t a ‘proper’ TR since it had a fixed roof and a no separate chassis. For & Against For: Sounds amazing Good performance Excellent handling Easy to maintain Good club support Against: Fuel injection system can cause problems Poor fitting body panels on some cars

7. Morris Minor

Quintessentially British, the Morris Minor almost begs to be parked outside small thatched cottages and picturesque village pubs. It’s also a reminder of a slower way of life, in the days when nobody seemed in a hurry to go anywhere, and that’s exactly what the Morris Minor is good at. It trundles along at a sedate speed, calmly and efficiently, going from A to B without making any fuss. It first appeared at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show in London and the last car rolled off the production line some 23 years later in 1971. By that time, a staggering 1,368,291 cars had been built. Like the Austin Mini, it is one of those great British motoring icons; see one anywhere in the world and you’ll instantly think of England. But that’s not the only thing the Morris has in common with the Mini. Both cars were designed by the same man - Sir Alec Issigonis. Also in common with the Mini, the Minor’s overall appearance changed very little during its production; Issigonis certainly had a knack of getting his designs right first time. For & Against For: Excellent club support Cheap insurance Easy to maintain Good parts availability Always in demand Against: Under-powered Prone to rotting if not looked after

8. Lotus Elan One British manufacturer flew in the face of conventionalism back in the 1960s, rejecting traditional steel bodywork for modern fibreglass. Lotus, based just outside the Norfolk city of Norwich, drew up plans for a sporty little two-seater in 1961 which would go on to become one of the most highly sought after classics for generations. The Lotus Elan was an exceptionally pretty car. It handled beautifully too, thanks to years of racing pedigree and experience gained by its maker. It was powerful as well…in a subtle kind of way. It didn’t rely on a big ‘straight six’ or ‘V8’ engine; instead the Lotus engineers worked on maximising the power output from a modest four-cylinder, twin-cam powerplant that used a cast iron block and alloy head. The 1558cc unit produced 105bhp, which might not sound like a lot, but with its Weber carbs and the overall light weight of the car, the little Lotus could pull away from the ‘lights’ faster than most of its contemporaries. The Elan came in a variety of styles, including the Elan +2, with its sloping front and rear ends and longer wheelbase to accommodate its 2+2 seating layout. There was also the highly desirable Elan Sprint which squeezed 126bhp from its 1.6 litre engine. Elan production ended in 1975, although Lotus would later reintroduce the name when it launched a new Elan in 1989. The wedge shaped car didn’t really have the elegant good looks of its predecessors, but sales were steady and it lasted until 1995 before the plug was eventually pulled on it. The design was then bought by Korean manufacturer Kia, who built its own version of the Elan until 1999. The Elan legacy continues to this day, with Lotus planning to introduce an all new Elan in 2013 and from the preview pictures, it looks like it will be quite a car! For & Against For: Excellent performance Very good handling Fantastic looks Good club support Against: Some parts expensive Body can be costly to fix if damaged

9. Austin Healey 3000

Next, the Austin Healey 3000. In some ways it’s similar to the Morris Minor in that it is quintessentially British. It looks at home in English country parks, or parked outside stately homes or village pubs on a summer afternoon. Certainly not a ‘city’ car, unless being driven by Terry Thomas or Leslie Phillips down the Mall towards Buckingham Palace…with ‘Rule Britannia’ playing in the background. The Austin Healey 3000 was produced from 1959-1967 and was built at the BMC factory at Abingdon in Oxfordshire. It had evolved from the earlier Austin Healey 100 which had been introduced to fill the gap in the market between the MG T-series and the Jaguar XK cars. The car was powered by a 2,912cc engine which by the end of production was returning an impressive 150bhp. The 3000 was built in Mk1, 2 and 3 varieties, and it is the later models which attract the most attention thanks to added luxuries like walnut dashboards and leather trim. They are also popular vehicles in the classic race and rallying worlds as their robust construction and powerful engines make them excellent competition cars. For & Against For: Stunning good looks Sounds great Good performance Fun to drive Against: Expensive to restore Soft tops can be a bit leaky!

10. Jaguar MkII Grace, Space & Pace. Those are the three words used by Jaguar boss Sir William Lyons to describe the concept of Jaguar cars, and when it comes to the iconic Mk2, most would say he achieved his goal… and then some. Style, power and luxury are three qualities that the Jaguar MkII has in abundance. However, while Lyons probably imagined that his new car would become famous as an upmarket chariot for executives and aristocracy, it was the criminals of the UK’s underworld that adopted the car and made it their own. At the time, it was one of the only cars that could outrun all the police vehicles of the day, so it made a great ‘getaway car’ and its large boot could carry lots of ‘loot.’ Not to be outdone, the police went out and bought its own fleet of Mk2s and levelled the playing field once more. The elegant saloon could be fitted with a variety of engines, including a 120bhp 2.4 litre, 210bhp 3.4 litre or 220bhp 3.8 litre. The 3.8 is similar to the engine used in the E-Type and uses the same block, crank, connecting rods and pistons but different inlet manifold and carburetors. The MkII had excellent handling too, thanks to its independent coil springs and wishbones at the front, and cantilever rear springs supporting a live axle at the rear. Telescopic hydraulic dampers were used all round. The result of this marriage of technical excellence was a genuine 120mph top speed. Inside, the car was awash with walnut veneer and enough leather to make a small herd of cattle disappear! Chrome rimmed instruments and luxurious carpet only added to the classy appearance. The MkII certainly delivered the “Grace, Space and Pace” that Lyons had promised, and the factory struggled to keep up with demand while the car was in production. The last car rolled off the line in 1967 but it enjoyed something of a resurgence during the 1990s when a MkII became one of the stars in the UK TV series ‘Inspector Morse.’ A good, solid MkII can be bought for around £10,000 while really good examples have been changing hands for well over £25,000. For & Against For: Looks Lively handling Good parts availability Easy to maintain Against: Some parts expensive Costly to restore properly February 2011 39

Cool Stuff To Spend Your Money On!

Automotive Heater Valve kit Available from: Revington TR Price From: £61.68 inc VAT See: www.revingtontr.com Revington TR in conjunction with TDC Automotive has designed an easy to fit heater valve kit that will give you back control of your heater output. This is achieved by controlling the water flow through the heater inlet hose through a clever combination of hoses, cables and heater valve. The kit contains all of the hoses, valves, clips and fittings that should be required to fit the kit. One of the great features of this kit is that the water valve fits inline in the heater inlet hose and needs no additional mounting bracket Three of the kits are specifically designed for Triumph TR2 to TR6 and contain all of the fittings and instructions required to make this kit a must have for any heater that lacks adjustment or where the heater valve has failed. TR2’s and TR3’s have no control over water flow from inside the car so this will definitely be a welcome addition to these models. For TR4-6 the water valve has a smooth virtually friction free lever that offers better control of the water flow thanks to the clever design of the valve. This allows the valve to open more evenly right through the cable travel. The original valve opens almost completely in the early part of cable travel in the existing set up, which does not allow good control of the heat output, as any TR6 owner knows. (For TR6 you are required to use your existing heater control cable). TDC Automotive via RevingtonTR is also offering the kit in a form that will fit many other classic and kit cars. TDC Automotive has achieved this by including several hose options to fit the vast majority of coolant/heating system

pipe sizes from 13mm to 19mm. With the control valve and cable also included it is a must for a simple installation that gives the amazing benefit of a heated cockpit that any passenger and driver will appreciate. Triumph GT6 (Part 1)

Al Filleul isn’t a man afraid of change. In fact, he likes to modify things...a lot! His Triumph GT6 MkII project was no exception and he has upgraded just about every part of the car, as he explains in the first part of this epic build report.

I

was 16 years old in 1970 when I fell in love with a car in our high-school parking lot. It was a red and white Lotus Europa. I have no idea who owned it, but the British car bug bit me hard and left a huge welt on me that never went away. 46 CPR Magazine

My first car was a burgundy 1969 Triumph Spitfire and I drove it all year round. Now that might not sound like a big deal, but did I mention that I live in Manitoba, Canada? All year round meant not just rain or shine, but cold, snow and blizzards too. A few years later

I bought a 1968 Lotus Europa S1 with the pop out windows and fixed seats. That too was driven year round and I pretty near froze my toes a few times; the car wasn’t equipped with the best heater in the world, but oh such much fun to drive!

The chassis during the strip-down.

This picture shows Al’s car BEFORE he started the restoration. Fast forward a few years and I settled on a selection of boring cars for a bit before the welt got itchy again and I picked up, in succession, a 1974 Triumph Spitfire (not nearly as much fun as the ’69), then a 1970 Lotus Europa S2 that I ended up modifying for autocross and a 1972 Austin Mini. I also discovered motorcycles and my passion for speed was aroused further, but I always

missed a British element to my life. The last bike was an authentic Ducati 750SS that I sold when I moved to an old farm in rural Manitoba.

I got the six Marriage – I have no idea how my wife Marni fell for me but I’m pretty sure that, in a previous life, she must have been truly evil and is now being punished by being wed

to me. About seven years ago she asked me if I’d like to get back into British cars. I, of course, said yes and the hunt began. I remembered having a brochure for a GT6 in the 70’s that was dog-eared from the number of times I’d looked at it, so the decision about what to buy wasn’t a difficult one. A GT6 it was! After a few weeks of searching I found February 2011 47

if you re-arrange the letters of my name (Alan) it spells ‘anal’ I know not of what she speaks. Five years ago The GT6 came off the road and sat for a few years until the tear down began. In 2009 I retired and built a 1,200sq/ft workshop in which I could pursue my passions.

anything but stock Now, I’ve always had a problem with leaving things stock. I just have to modify things no matter what they are. I even ported the head on our old Briggs & Stratton lawn tractor! Marni also says that

With the workshop complete I could concentrate on the GT6. My plan was to build something with better performance, reliability and comfort. In reality the GT6 was a perfect choice and it’s so pretty too! The body was in very good shape with no rust and even the panels were reasonably straight, but off it came to expose the skeleton and vital organs. Lots of dirt, grease

and oil but that helped keep the demon rust off everything – see, oil leaks are our friend! The frame was blasted and powder coated a bright yellow, which will be the final colour of the body. I do my own powder coating so anything that will fit in a conventional oven is being coated too. Powder coat is tough stuff!

blank canvas With that done, I turned my attention to the running gear. With such a wonderful ‘blank canvas’ to work on, I wasn’t going to waste the opportunity to make a few ‘improvements’ which will hopefully make the GT6 handle even better than when it left the factory. The list of ‘improvements’ includes: • Complete suspension rebuild • Spax shocks, front

Talking of the engine, I made a few changes in that department too. While it was out I completely stripped it down and went to work on it. I used the original GT6 block, but nearly everything else was changed or upgraded. Triumph GT6 The Beginning

Italian Style - British Engineering... In early 1963 Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti was commissioned by StandardTriumph to design a GT version of the recently introduced Spitfire 4 (also designed by Michelotti). A stock Spitfire 4 was shipped to Michelotti’s studios in Italy and a few months later the prototype ‘Spitfire GT4’ was returned to England for evaluation. The styling of the vehicle was a success, but the extra weight of the GT bodyshell led to extremely poor performance. As a result, plans for producing the Spitfire GT4 were shelved. The idea never really went away, and after the GT concept was successfully used on some of Triumph’s racing Spitfires, Triumph re-evaluated its plans for a GT version of the Spitfire. There was still the issue of performance to overcome, so Triumph decided to drop in a sixcylinder 2.0litre engine to give the car a bit of a boost. It worked. The car was further developed and refined and eventually launched as the Triumph GT6 (dropping the Spitfire prefix) to identify its GT styling and its 6-cylinder engine. 52 CPR Magazine

seats and recovered them with Katzkin leather and finished them off with Lakewood headrest speakers. New carpets, door and window seals and headliner were obtained and soon fitted to the car. I decided to fit an electric window kit and used Porsche 911 window switches and custom built replica door panels without the window crank holes. Underneath the trim kit, all interior body panels were covered in soundproof/ heatproof material which should improve driver comfort, especially on long journeys. I’m presently working on preparing the body for a respray and it WILL be on the road this summer. It’s been like building a giant model, but I’m loving every minute of it!

Autosport Inte Autosport International - The Racing Car Show, is one of the biggest shows of its kind anywhere in the world. Held at the NEC, Birmingham, on January 1316, Simon Hazeldine went along to catch all the action.

B

illed as the biggest motorsport show in the world, Autosport International 2011 – The Racing Show, held at the NEC, Birmingham, didn’t disappoint. From Formula 1 to Karting, just about every type of motorsport was represented at the event which occupied eight 56 CPR Magazine

of the massive halls at the NEC. The show is essentially a pre-season shop window where teams and drivers can come and see all the latest motorsport developments and make those essential purchases which could make them more competitive during the forthcoming season.

The event is split into two parts. The Thursday and Friday are very much trade days where the emphasis is very much on buying and selling, while the Saturday and Sunday are public days and the atmosphere is a little lighter. I went along on the Saturday, and as it was my first time at

ernational this particular show, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. The NEC can be a bit of a nightmare as some of the car parks are miles from the halls, but luckily I managed to get in one of the east car parks and was on one of the free courtesy buses within two minutes. Entering the show can be a bit overwhelming; there’s so much going on that it’s difficult to know where to look

first! However, as this show is one of the few occasions where you can get up close to a whole bunch of Formula 1 cars, I headed straight over to the F1 grid at the back of Hall 7. The display of cars was quite simply amazing. Most of the teams participating in the 2010 season had one of their cars on the grid, although the likes of Ferrari were notable for their absence. The F1 Racing team

The Racing Car Show

also kept visitors to the show entertained by interviewing a variety of celebrities from the F1 world, including Allan McNish and Jody Scheckter. Apart from the F1 grid, there were plenty of other attractions for fans of Formula 1 racing. The Lotus stand was displaying the brand new 2011 Lotus Renault GP F1 car, resplendent in its very attractive black and gold colour scheme. The scheme February 2011 57

Lotus Type 125 - an F1 inspired track car. is based on the famous JPS Lotus cars that campaigned successfully in the 1970s. The appearance of the car also resulted in a certain amount of head scratching too. Was this the new car from the team that was run by Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes last year? Errr…no. The new car is the result of collaboration between Norfolk58 CPR Magazine

based Lotus and the French Renault F1 team which came after Group Lotus PLC bought a major equity stake in the existing Renault F1 team. Group Lotus CEO Dany Bahar said: “We are well aware that there has been a lot of controversy around the useage of our brand in Formula 1, and I am delighted be able to clarify the position:

we are Lotus and we are back!” Bizarrely, a few days after the show, news filtered through from Canada that the new JPS inspired scheme could still fall foul of the country’s strict anti-tobacco advertising laws. A news report from The Globe and Mail in Toronto basically said that if the car looks like a packet of cigarettes, then it could be banned. Speaking about the Louts car, a Health Canada spokesperson said that “tobacco inspectors would need to fully review to assess whether a violation of the Tobacco Act has occurred.” You couldn’t make it up…could you! Alongside the new F1 car was another machine, which at first glance looked like it too might be destined for the F1 circus. However, this was the new Lotus Type 125, a car being

sold to individuals wanting to take part in a new race/ driving series called The Exos Experience By Lotus. According to the manufacturer, the Lotus 125 is “an exclusive ultra high performance F1 inspired race-car complete with Cosworth 3.5 litre GP V8 engine producing 640bhp linked to a six-speed semi automatic gearbox with paddle shift. A bespoke carbon composite (with nomex and aluminium core) chassis with carbon composite panels contribute to a super light weight of just 560kg resulting in a phenomenal power to weight ratio of nearly 1,000hp per tonne. Unlike a Formula One car however, an army of technicians and mechanics is not required to start the engine and keep the car running. The start button is all the driver needs to press to get going.” Basically, what the owner of a Type 125 gets is a simplified and slightly de-tuned F1 car. Whether it helps drivers break into the exclusive world of F1 racing remains to be seen, but the Exos Experience would certainly seem to be aimed at those with a serious eye on the top flight of motorsport. “The Exos Experience, initiated and operated by Lotus Motorsport, is an elite club,” says Lotus. “A club in which the limited number of Lotus 125 owner drivers can refine their driving skills and challenge themselves in Formula 1 inspired technology combined with expert oneto-one advice from former Grand Prix drivers and trainers. Moving away from the high octane world of F1, another racing series that seems to be growing in stature each year is Radical Racing, and this year the Peterboroughbased company launched an amazing three new models at the Autosport show. Radical’s new SR3 SL road and track-day racer was launched on the opening day of the show at a media event hosted by ‘the voice of Le Mans’, John Hindhaugh. A big surprise was the unique decal design applied to the car, a vibrant blend of coloured lines that really conveys the SL’s performance. The car was unveiled by veteran racer Ian Flux, nine years to the day after he pulled the sheet

Radical’s new range-topper, the SR8 RX, was also launched at the show, with the new RPE 2.7-litre RPX V8 engine, a revised chassis and evolved engine and gearbox electronics. The 2011-model SR3 RS was the third new model, sharing the same chassis and body revisions as the RX, and again revised electronics. Will Brown, Radical’s Marketing Executive, said that the two trade days had proved successful, with a number of cars sold to buyers from around the world, and huge interest was shown in the newest member of the Radical range, the SR3 SL. Heading back to F1 (sort of), the huge McLaren stand was a real Mecca for racing fans with its selection of McLaren F1 cars dating back through the ages. Among these were

Legendary commentator Murray Walker made a return to the Autosport International show after missing out on the 2010 event. As the nation’s favourite pundit, ‘Mr F1’ kept viewers entertained with all the thrills and spills of Formula One for over 20 years. Fans missing Murray from their TV screens got the opportunity to chat to him during the show. Murray said: “I was very upset at having missed Autosport International last year, so I’m delighted to be back in 2011. While all this exotic metal was very alluring, it was some of the more unusual stands at the show that caught my attention the most. One of these was PopBang Colour stand which was hosting the work of artist Ian Cook. Ian has combined his passion for motorsport (and radio controlled cars!) with his artistic side and produced some stunning works of art using a rather unique method. Instead of using tradional paint brushes to create his masterpieces, Ian uses his radio controlled cars! He 64 CPR Magazine

splashes the paint on the giant canvas and then drives the cars over the paint to spread it out and give it texture. If you or I tried doing something like this, the results would be horrendous, but when Ian does it, the finished paintings are simply superb. In fact, his work is so good that in 2008, he was commissioned by Reebok to paint a giant

12 metre high painting of F1 driver Lewis Hamilton which was displayed in London next to Tower Bridge. The Autosport show also gives visitors the chance to rub shoulders with some of the great names in motorsport, both past and present, and this year was no exception. Among those present were Allan McNish (ex-F1

Toyota driver), Formula 1 commentators Martin Brundle and Jake Humphrey, F1 legend Jody Scheckter, Grand Prix motorcycle racer and Formula 1 driver John Surtees, and Tiff Needel and Jason Plato from TV’s Fifth Gear programme. The latter two were presenting the Fifth Gear Live Show in the Live Action Arena. This didn’t quite live up to the hype as it was a bit like an indoor banger race, but with better cars and no crashes. Lots of tyre smoke and flashing lights, but after half an hour I had seen enough. There was live action of a slightly different kind in the NEC’s cavernous Hall 4. The Caterham Driving Experience was offering visitors the chance to be thrown around (quite literally!) as a passenger in a Caterham Seven on the indoor ‘Drift Course’ and a huge Karting track had been set up giving attendees the opportunity for a little wheel to wheel action. The Autosport International show is run alongside the Pistonheads Performance Motor Show, although the reality is that it is all part and parcel of the same event. The Pistonheads section of the show didn’t really live up to its name, since there seemed to be very few ‘performance motors’ on display. It was more a selection of motoring related stands that gave Hall 19 the feel of an upmarket car boot sale. It seemed you could buy everything from car stereos to radio controlled helicopters and other visitors

Visitors could even drive ‘Dodgems’ too!

I spoke to also voiced their disappointment at this part of the show. Thankfully, the event is so huge that it really doesn’t matter is small parts of it don’t quite reach your expectations – there’s always something really impressive just around 66 CPR Magazine

the next corner! Overall I thought the show was good, although you can forget about the live action arena and the Pistonheads section didn’t really excite me. If you are into motor racing of any kind, this is the show for you, and if you are a Formula 1 fan, you

will simply love it! The one thing that this show is really good for though is shopping. If you want new parts for your car for the forthcoming season, this is the place to find them. If you can’t find them here, then they probably don’t exist!

Rocket Ship! While Caterham Cars has always had one foot firmly in the past with its Lotus Seven inspired car, the introduction of the all-new SP300R track car shows that it has the other foot firmly in the future!

aterham Cars has opened an exciting new chapter in its 50-year history with the release of its first ever sports prototype racing car for a new onemake series and the trackday community. Unveiled at the Autosport International Show (Birmingham, UK), the Caterham-Lola SP/300.R is a major new addition to sit alongside the legendary Seven, yet remains true to its lightweight, minimalist DNA to deliver all the thrills of driving

The SP/300.R will be capable of being adapted to suit alternative engines but the factory-fit engine will offer unrivalled levels of reliability – together with a perfectlymatched Hewland semiautomatic FTR transmission, Caterham aims to reproduce the enormously-durable February 2011 73

bearing rear transaxle. A forward splitter and large rear wing reduce lift, while a flat underbody maximises ground effect benefits. A broad aero platform generates optimal downforce and balance, while the aerodynamic performance is fine-tuned by ducts and dive-planes. The SP/300.R bodywork also features an F1style raised nose section and sectioned panels, which will help reduce repair costs, ease maintenance and, importantly, allow single-handed removal of body panels track-side. Caterham’s research suggests that most sports prototypes in today’s market require more than one person to assist in the removal of body panels, e.g. oil check, set-up, etc; the SP/300.R will be the only sports prototype that offers this unique, flexible and yet convenient feature. The car also takes subtle design cues from the instantlyrecognisable Caterham Seven; for instance, the Seven’s grille shape appears beneath the raised nose of the SP/300.R. drivetrain solution that has been so successful in the Superlight R300 series, where engine rebuilds are virtually unnecessary. Chassis The rich racing heritage of the Caterham Seven and Caterham’s motorsport expertise will ensure the success of the Company’s expansion into sports prototype racing. However to achieve that end, Caterham has teamed up with the world’s leading manufacturer of customer race cars, Lola Cars. Its 74 CPR Magazine

expertise, particularly in the sports racing category, was invaluable in the creation and styling of a bespoke chassis that forms the basis of the SP/300.R. With the styling aerodynamically, rather than aesthetically led, the SP/300.R has been designed using Lola’s state-of-theart CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) technology, with input and critique from Caterham. The basic chassis is an aluminium tub with a longitudinally mid-mounted engine, coupled to a stress-

Performance The pairing of Lola’s worldbeating aerodynamic package with the Ford engine will produce a car that will easily meet the desires of Caterham customers, whether they are seeking their first serious step into sports prototype racing or the ultimate trackday machine. The supercharged Duratec’s 300bhp will propel the sub600kg car from 0-60mph in around 2.5 seconds, translating into 500bhp-pertonne, excluding the driver. The gearing of the car has been selected to reach maximum rpm in top

gear at the end of SpaFrancorchamps circuit’s Kemmel Straight, chosen as it is one of the more frequentlyvisited race and trackday venues. Top speed will be around 170mph. Suspension The SP/300.R will benefit from full race suspension – front and rear dual wishbones with pushrod dampers, adjustable ride height and bespoke wheels and tyres will all make for a race car of exquisite balance and stability. The rear suspension architecture is derived from that used at the rear end of the Lola Formula 3 and World Junior cars – coupled with the high downforce generated by the aerodynamic package, this will be a direct and rewarding

race car to drive. Wheels & Tyres Thanks to Caterham’s longstanding partner, Cooper Avon Tyres, the SP/300.R will stand on bespoke rubber developed specially by Cooper Tire for

to Formula 1. The SP/300.R’s tyres are fitted to 13-inch race rims. Measuring a muscular 250mm wide at the rear, and 180mm at the front, the tyres have been specifically designed to cope with vast engine torque married to a lightweight chassis.

for the car and incorporated into the styling schemes. The chassis has also been designed as a race chassis with the requisite crash structures. Other components include the six-point harness, fire extinguisher, cut-off switch and so on.

Safety

In keeping with the SP/300.R’s stature as a premium race product, Caterham has selected fixings and fittings of a very high quality. These include the steering wheel, which incorporates

One-make championship With Caterham’s vastly rich heritage in motorsport – both domestically and internationally – it is no surprise to find that Caterham Motorsport is planning a prestigious one-make series in which the SP/300.R will star. The details of its own championship are yet to be finalised, but the SP/300.R series will initially focus on UK circuits, with the potential

addition of one round abroad. However, the projected success of the cornerstone debut season is expected to make the SP/300.R and its race series eminently marketable further afield in Europe, which will provide a major boost to Caterham’s already thriving export market. Caterham Motorsport Caterham has proven over the last 25 years that it is expert in producing and managing world-class motor racing championships and events. The Company’s motorsport ‘ladder’ provides a cost-

effective, easy-to-run solution for drivers of any ability to get into racing, from complete novices with the Academy series to the Superlight R300 for seasoned semiprofessionals. The Caterham Academy, which takes novice nonracers through the process of getting their race licence to enjoying their first season of competitive action, has become one of the UK domestic scene’s lynch pins, creating around 750 brand new racing drivers since its inception in 1995.

It is the proven organisational expertise and infrastructure that will run the new onemake championship for the SP/300.R, starting in 2012. The Caterham-Lola SP/300.R is priced at £60,000, excluding local taxes. The launch at this year’s Autosport International certainly looked encouraging for Caterham. Company CEO Ansar Ali said that over 30 deposits had been taken for the new car at the show and that the race series should be running by 2012. Watch this space!

RM Auctions enjoyed a strong start to its 2011 auction season on January 21, posting a record $30.8 million in sales at its annual Arizona event, with an impressive 96% of lots sold and four cars exceeding the magic million dollar mark. Held at the prestigious Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, the two-day sale presented 180 quality vehicles, spanning a diverse range of blue-chip automotive marques. Top honours went to a coveted 1949 Ferrari 166MM Barchetta, a matching-numbers Mille Miglia veteran and the 10th of just 25 examples built, which attracted strong interest, achieving $1,870,000. A stunning, superbly-restored 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Coupe also garnered significant attention, spurring a lively bidding war between Europe versus the Middle-East to well-exceed its presale estimate at $1,375,000 – a new auction record for a steel-bodied 300SL Gullwing. Bidders at the sale represented 21 countries from around the world, including as far away as Argentina, the United Arab Emirates, Monaco and Australia. “We are thrilled with the results from this week’s Arizona sale. The offering attracted strong interest from collectors around the globe, with numerous lots exceeding expectations,” says Rob Myers, Chairman and Founder, RM Auctions. “It is a great start to the New Year and paints a very positive forecast for the auction season ahead.” Following the success of last year’s ‘The British Are Coming’, RM’s 2011 Arizona sale kicked off on Thursday January 20, with ‘The British Are Back’ – an exclusive evening sale dedicated to the best of the British. Rolls-Royce claimed the top two sales of the night with a handsome 1932 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Newmarket Sport Sedan, one of just three original Brewster-bodied examples, bringing $440,000, while an extravagant 1921 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Phaeton, built for the Calcutta Motor Show, realized $379,500. Rounding out the top three sales from the evening, a 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Series IV Vantage exceeded its pre-sale estimate, selling for $352,000. Friday’s top-sellers list was dominated by an exciting series of Ferraris and the ‘best of the best’ of the Classic Era. Continuing RM’s reputation as the global leader in the presentation of important and historic Ferraris at auction, the sale featured no less than 11 examples from the Modenese Prancing Horse. Led by the sale-topping 166 MM Barchetta, other highlights included a stunning 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast, one of just 32 built, for $935,000; a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder, offered from the personal collection of Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson, for $880,000; and the ex-Jacques Swaters 1995 Ferrari F50 Show Car, showing less than 1,000 miles, for $742,500. The American Classics category was headlined by a rare 1933 Packard Twelve Sport Phaeton by Dietrich which realized $1,760,000, closely followed by a 1929 Duesenberg Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton driven by Elvis Presley in the film ‘Spinout’ for $1,237,500. The sale’s cover car - a spectacular 1931 Marmon Sixteen Coupe, one of only six survivors – also attracted spirited bidding, achieving $687,500 to set a new price level for Marmons.

Passion For Speed Volume 1 - Ferrari Enzo

Passion For Speed - Volume 1, Ferrari Enzo Format: Region 0, PAL 16:9 Price: £14.99 + P&P Available From: www.intotheredfilms.com It’s more than 10 years now, since Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason – who needs no introduction – and Mark Hales, writer and racer, set about creating Into the Red, a Grand Opus about Nick’s car collection. He doesn’t like that description, collection, but perhaps there’s no better word to describe the contents of his garage. In 1997, they settled for 21 of his favourites for the first edition of the book – spanning almost a century. Then 22 for the second, and now four more to make it 25 for this latest version. And since the Ferrari F60 – or Enzo - is the most recent chapter, it makes sense to begin this exclusive series of films with the same car - which Nick added in 2005. With exclusive interviews with Nick Mason this in-depth DVD follows Mark Hales as he takes the Enzo on the road and track. We push the car to its breathtaking limits on the circuit and then take it out for a blast on the country lanes. And then it’s back to the workshop for a detailed look at what makes this spectacular supercar tick. With over an hour of feature action and thirty minutes of bonus footage, Into The Red: Ferrari Enzo sits you right in the driver’s seat. A thoroughly enjoyable DVD which gives a great insight into the personality of Nick Mason... and of course, the Ferrari Enzo.

Speedy Stories & Revving Reads!

PORSCHE 911 SOURCE BOOK Author: Jörg Austen & Sigmund Walter RRP: £30.00. Format: Hardback. ISBN: 978 1 84425 969 4 Available From: www.haynes.co.uk Launched in 1964 and still in production today, more than 46 years later, the Porsche 911 has become an automotive legend. Down the years, this byword for German technical excellence has continually evolved, with the result that today’s versions share little more than a name, shape and engine configuration with their predecessors. The many thousands of changes in 911 specification through the years are recorded and explained in this book, which has been compiled from technical documentation in Porsche’s archives. Each model year is covered in depth, with full specification tables detailing engines, transmissions, suspension, wheels and tyres, weights, dimensions and fluid capacities, as well as chassis numbers and production numbers for each model. The comprehensive tables are supported by descriptive text explaining significant developments together with a wealth of colour photographs and technical illustrations. From the first 2-litre normally aspirated 911 through to the 2009 911 Turbo Coupé and Cabriolet, all models are described, including supreme performance models such as the legendary 1973 Carrera RS 2.7, the original 1975 911 Turbo, the 911-derived 959 supercar, and the race-ready 911 GT2 and GT3 models. This easy-to-use fact-packed book provides an essential reference guide to all Porsche 911 models. 100 Cars Britain Can Be Proud Of Author: G. Chapman RRP: £7.99. Format: Paperback. And all for under a tenner too!

Maserati Italian Luxury and Flair RRP: £25.00 Author: Martin Buckley Format: Hardback ISBN: 978 1 84425 504 7 Available From: www.haynes.co.uk The latest addition to the popular ‘Classic Makes’ Series tells the story of Maserati, a marque that has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence in the last decade – having previously fallen on hard times after the glory days of the 1960s and 70s. Illustrated with 150 colour pictures, the book blends history and technical information with driving reviews and buying hints for each post-war model. It also contains profiles of the key personalities involved in Maserati’s rollercoaster story, taking readers up to its rebirth under Fiat’s ownership and the release of updated models in the ever popular Quattroporte and Gran Turismo series. Classic icons such as the 3500GT and the Ghibli are also featured in one of the few in-depth histories to be produced on this famous Italian manufacturer, charting its transition from race car to road car production that have seen it come to rival Ferrari and Lamborghini in providing fast, glamorous vehicles for the discerning rich.

If you are selling a car, remember that there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there who will use every trick in the book to part you from your car or your money. Take sensible precautions. If you are buying a car; make sure you check it thoroughly. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! Never meet a vendor on the street or at service stations. Research the type of car you are buying so you know what to look for. If you are unsure, take an expert along with you.
