Editorial You might have noticed that there has been a bit of a gap between this and the last issue of Classic, Performance & Retro, so sincere apologies if you have been missing us! We simply took on a bit too much over the last couple of months, and having stands at MotorsportUK and the Classic Motor Show meant that we were out chatting to lots of readers instead of being tied to the office here at CPR Towers. Still, things are nearly back to normal now, and all the hard work has been worth it as we have some great show reports in this very issue. It was great seeing the debut of MotorsportUK at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry. The show is aimed at enticing new people to motorsport and concentrates on entry level disciplines that most people can afford. Then of course there was the Classic Motor Show at the NEC, Birmingham. This show has grown to huge proportions over the past couple of decades and it is almost impossible to see it all in one day, however, that didn’t deter over 48,000 classic car fans from visiting the show during the three day event. You can read about both those shows in this very issue, and while your at it, make sure you don’t miss the excellent feature on the last ever Ferrari 328 to roll of the Maranello production line – it’s a cracker! Talking of crackers, this is the last issue of Classic, Performance & Retro before Christmas, so on behalf of all of us here at the magazine, may I wish you a very happy Christmas and let’s hope we have a prosperous new year. TVR Put Old Models Back In Production (well...sort of!) Owner of the TVR name, Nikolai Smolenski, has pushed ahead with his plans to resurrect the iconic British sportscar company by launching a website offering ‘as new’ TVRs. For anyone expecting a brand new model of TVR, or those wanting to see cars rolling off a production line, the website might be a little disappointing, but basically the company is offering to source and rebuild existing TVRs to an ‘as new’ spec or rebuild customers’ existing cars. You can pick any model from the 90s Griffith right up to the most recent Sagarises and the company will build you a ‘new’ version of the car. It is also offering the ‘TVR Reborn’ programme where the company is offering to rebuild and upgrade owners’ existing cars with new engines, a reinforced gearbox and improved suspension. So, what does it cost to have a shiny new TVR Chimaera you might ask? Are you sitting down? Okay, well how does £99,600 sound? In fact, the same price seems to apply to the Sagaris, Tuscan, Griffith or Chimaera, and when you consider that you can pick up a brand-new Jaguar XKR-S for the same money, it really puts it into perspective. Jaguar XKR-S Convertible Unveiled

Jaguar has unveiled the new XKR-S Converible which will go on sale in the UK early next year. The car is being touted as the “fastest and most powerful open-topped GT ever produced by Jaguar,” which is not too surprising considering that the building block for the car’s performance is an uprated version of the 5.0-litre supercharged AJ-V8 engine, which produces 550PS (405kW) and 502lb/ft (680Nm) of torque. These figures represent a power increase of 8 percent and torque increase of 9 percent over the Jaguar XKR. Driving the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox with Active Differential, this propels the XKR-S Convertible to 60mph in 4.2 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h). The advanced design of the quad-cam, all-aluminium AJ-V8 incorporates spray-guided direct injection and variable valve timing for improved efficiency, and the Roots-type twinvortex supercharger located in the ‘V’ of the engine has twin intercoolers and is 20% more thermodynamically efficient than its predecessor, says Jaguar. “Taking the track-oriented ethos of the XKR-S Coupé and applying it to a convertible is very exciting,” said Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar Cars. “There is a real spirit and thrill to driving with the roof down and in a car capable of these speeds that is going to be exaggerated to create a very dramatic and special experience.”

Ferrari Planning Exclusive Collectors’ Club For Owners Of Five Or More Cars

Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo says the company is planning to create an exclusive Ferrari collectors club for dedicated owners who possess five or more of the Italian ‘supercars.’ The idea is to give its members first pick of future limited edition cars, and while that might seem a bit like insider trading, it does at least ensure that the cars are going to genuine enthusiasts instead of speculators and investment companies. Ferrari believes that around 300 people qualify for membership of the exclusive club, and membership would ensure there is no repeat of the embarrassing situation that arose when the Ferrari SA Aperta (599 Spyder) was launched and sold out before many of the collectors had a chance to buy one.

Ford Reveals the 2013 200mph Mustang Shelby GT500 Ford is calling it the “Most powerful production V8 in the world.” The soon-to-be-released 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 has just been unveiled and it looks like it’s a bit of a monster. According to the US manufacturer, the new car will be powered by a 5.8 litre V8 engine delivering 650hp, giving it a top speed of more than 200mph. Nearly every vehicle system has been optimized including powertrain, brakes, gearing and suspension, while the exterior benefits from new downforce-generating front grilles, aggressive splitter, new quad exhaust system and two new forged-aluminum wheels. “SVT keeps the Shelby GT500 on the cutting edge of technology and takes muscle car performance to new heights,” said Jost Capito, director of Global Performance Vehicles and Motorsport Business Development. “We encapsulated every aspect of performance in this car – whether it’s 0-60, top speed, racetrack or quarter-mile times. Beyond that, the daily driver also will find this car perfectly fits his or her needs.” “It might just seem like we’re putting a bigger engine into the car. But it’s been a balanced approach through and through,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT Chief Engineer. “We’ve completely redone the car to be even more sophisticated in terms of handling and control than the prior model.”

E-type Challenge continues in 2012 The E-type Challenge, created in 2011 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Jaguar E-type, will continue in 2012 when the HSCC will run E-type races at a series of high profile historic race meetings. Although initially conceived as a one-off programme to mark 50 years of the iconic British sports car, such has been competitor support that the HSCC has decided to repeat the series next season. A programme of five or six events, with some double-headers, is being planned, with at least one date on mainland Europe. A total of over 70 cars registered for the 2011 season and a record-setting grid of 52 cars competed in a pair of races at the Silverstone Classic in July. “We spoke to the competitors towards the end of the season and there was widespread support for continuing the concept in 2012,” said HSCC executive director Grahame White. “We plan to run it on very similar lines next season, once more with very thorough scrutineering. There is a pool of around 70 cars ready to race and we are keen to offer them a series of dates at significant historic race meetings. We hope to release the full schedule shortly.” The series, managed by the Historic Sports Car Club, in conjunction with Jaguar Heritage, was supported by JD Classics in 2011 and runs with two classes, for cars prepared to period race trim and standard cars.

Masters Historic Racing returns to Barcelona Masters Historic Racing has confirmed that it will play a key part of the 2012 Catalan Classic Festival at the Barcelona circuit next April. The three-day festival, created by Spanish enthusiast Jesús Pozo, will run from April 20th-22nd and will build on the huge success of the 2011 event. Masters has confirmed that it will take selected grids for the second Catalan Classic Festival, but an announcement on which grids will race in the Spanish sunshine will be made shortly. The ICGP series for classic motorcycles has confirmed it will return to the Spanish track, taking machines and riders of yesteryear. Masters Historic Racing Event Manager Rachel Bailey said: “The inaugural Catalan Classic Festival was a huge success and we are working hard to make sure that the 2012 event is even bigger and better. We are aware that for some British teams, Barcelona is a long way to go so we will work carefully with our competitors and the event organisers in Spain to ensure that we get as full an entry as possible. The circuit is superb and everyone who raced there last year was full of praise for the circuit, the organisation and the event. It was the first time such a race meeting had been run in Spain and no-one really knew what to expect. Now that Jesús Pozo and his team have a year’s experience of running the event, it will surely build for 2012. We will look at taking GP Masters and sports cars but we will make a full announcement on the categories shortly.”

Radical Racing Co-Founder Sells Up

Kimi Raikkonen Makes Surprise F1 Return With Lotus Renault GP

One of the co-founders of Cambridgeshirebased Radical Racing has sold his share in the business to an investment group. Mick Hyde set up Radical with business partner and engineering expert Phil Abbott back in 1997, and while Abbott concentrated on building the cars, Hyde used his marketing experience to make the company the second biggest producer of bespoke racing cars in the world today, with only Porsche making more. Hyde has now sold his stake for a sum believed to be in the region of £30million and he has retired from the business completely. The company is now being run by Phil Abbott, although the new investment group, which apparently includes at least one ‘industry expert,’ could make funds available to Radical to help with future expansion plans.

Ex-Formula1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen will make an unexpected return to the F1 next year after he recently signed for UK-based LotusRenault GP. Speaking about the surprise signing, Lotus ambassador and former F1 driver Jean Alesi said: “It’s fantastic news. Kimi has more natural speed than just about anyone who has ever raced a Grand Prix car, and if he’s coming back it’s because he wants to do it, he misses F1, and he believes he can do well. He has had a short break, which was a little bit forced by Ferrari. I think he was fed up with the system and wanted to take time out, which I can totally understand. But now he’s coming back, with Lotus, so it’s really exciting. The great thing with Kimi is he extracts the maximum from a quick car. When the car was good at McLaren and Ferrari he was always winning. LRGP will expect him to extract the maximum from the Lotus as well.”

Build-Up Begins to 2011 Roger Albert Clark Rally Steve Perez considers the Roger Albert Clark Rally (2-5 December) to be the best rally of the year and will fly straight back from the East African Safari Classic Rally to maintain his 100% record of starting each of the eight editions of the Roger Albert. Perez and his sensational Lancia Stratos are always one of the star attractions on the RAC, drawing massive support from the fans. Perez says that it would not be right without a Stratos on the event’s entry list. “The RAC has to have a Stratos in it,” he said. “If I was only going to do one rally a year, it would be the RAC.” Steve will arrive at Duncombe Park on December 2, barely 48 hours after landing back in the UK following the Safari Classic, where he is competing in a Datsun 260Z.

Mini Owners Target Allegro! The Allegro Club International is warning its members to be on their guard against Mini owners buying up Austin Allegros to strip them of their 1275 A-series engines. The trend has become increasingly common in recent months as the supply of Metros fitted with 1275 engines has apparently all but dried up. As a result, the Allegros are being targeted as the next best source for the engines. Speaking through the club’s magazine, Chairman paul Vincent said: “I have nothing against Minis, or the many people who preserve and enjoy them, but perfectly good Allegros are being scrapped to provide an engine to make another Mini go a little bit faster!” He added that the problem is affecting cars being offered for under £500 and said that vendors of such cars should be wary of who they sell to. www.allegroclubint.org.uk

f you believe the economists and government advisors, we have just come out of one of the worst recessions in living memory, and as if that wasn’t bad enough, we are apparently about to plunge head-first into another one. Personally, I’m not convinced that ‘Recession 1’ ever actually ended, so quite why people are so keenly touting the arrival of another one is a bit beyond me. Of course, we can avoid ‘Recession 2 – The Sequel’ if all the countries in the ‘Eurozone’ can get together and agree on a plan to stop the Euro failing. Okay, doomed it is then, and most people here in the UK nod their heads knowingly and say “We told you it wouldn’t work!” With all that in mind, some might say that the introduction of a brand new motorsport show to the UK’s automotive event diary is a bold move, so when the MotorsportUK show at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena was announced, there were more than a few raised eyebrows. Brave, bold…call it what 18 www.cprmag.com

with the venue. Getting there couldn’t be easier as it is only two minutes from Junction 3 of the M6 Motorway, and with 2,000 parking spaces available right next to the stadium, parking was easy too. A large concourse separates the football ground from the

exhibition hall, and a couple of rally cars parked on a polished marble floor are the only indication that any sort of motoring event is taking place. A little further along is the ticket office and then the main door to the hall. Inside the hall is a dazzling

Laid Back Unlike some shows which pack exhibitors in so tightly that it starts to feel claustrophobic after half an hour, MotorsportUK has a rather spacious feel about it. The atmosphere is laid back too; with all stall holders seemingly only too happy to spend time chatting, even if you had no intention of buying their products. So, before I take a closer look at what was on offer at the show, I suppose the obvious question is ‘Why?’ There are other established motorsport shows already held here in the UK, so why do we need another one? According

Looking around the hall it was obvious to see that there were many different ways of getting into motorsport. There was Karting at one end of the scale and the impressive Saker Challenge sportscars at the other, or if you fancied something a little different, there were exhibitors catering for powerboat and even hovercraft racing.

Old & New With over 100 exhibitors in the main hall there were plenty of interesting cars to see. Probably the most famous of these was a McLaren M26 once driven by James Hunt, although this grand old icon of motorsport looked rather lonely as it sat in the corner of the hall next to the main stage. that caught my eye was the Deronda Type F. This car is available in kit form or can be bought ready assembled straight from the manufacturer. The car is based on a sort of exo-skeleton chassis which sweeps upwards to incorporate two roll-over hoops above the open cockpit. Its pointy, shark-like nose hints at F1 inspirations, as does the suspension set-up which uses unequal length double wishbones front and rear and horizontally mounted dampers. Power comes from an Audi 300hp 1.8 litre turbo engine. As for its performance, fitting that 300hp engine in a car weighing less than 600kg equates to over 500bhp per tonne. Acceleration times are 3.6 seconds to 60mph and 8.8 to 100 mph, so I think it’s safe to say that it’s pretty fast!

There are no creature comforts inside the car, so if you want to use it for touring or shopping, forget it. This is basically a road-legal track machine, so if you are really serious about your track days, you might want to take a closer look at this car.

been running in Holland for seven years now, and the impressive Group C inspired cars offer an affordable way to get into ‘Le Mans style’ sportscar racing. Being a ‘one make’ championship, all the cars are more or less identical so whether you win or lose is really down to driving skill, not who has got the fastest car! The stunning looking GT cars are powered by a 2 litre, flatfour Subaru engine producing a maximum 270hp. The cars, which can hit speeds of up to 160mph, cost £42,900 plus VAT, and if you share those costs with another

driver, then that is actually a very cheap way to get into racing, especially when you consider that the series will be competing at circuits like Silverstone, Donington Park and Brands Hatch. If you have always wanted to drive in the Le Mans 24 Hour Race but never had the £millions required to do it, then this could be the next best thing. One of the newest cars on display at the show was the RTM La Bala. This new kit car made its UK debut at the recent Exeter kit Car Show and its appearance attracted quite a lot of attention. The La

Bala has been available in the USA for some time now, but as RTM Director Chris Ridgers explained to me, this is the first time it has been available in the UK. Despite looking like the complete article, the car on the RTM stand wasn’t quite finished, as it still needed the clutch hydraulics plumbing in along with a few other items.

The chance to see GT40s and Cobras driving at speed around a brand new race track is one not to be missed, as Simon Hazeldine discovered when he headed to Blyton Park in Lincolnshire.

the GT40 Enthusiasts’ Club – sends me an invitation to go along to see some of the cars in action on the track, I quickly make a space in my diary. So what if it clashes with someone’s wedding/birthday/ anniversary – some things are just more important!

Desmond’s latest invitation was for a club track day at Blyton Park. The venue is not one I had been to before; hardly surprising since it has only been open in its current format since May this year. The circuit is built on the remains of one of the many

disused World War Two RAF bomber bases that occupy this region. The fact that it still stands comes as no surprise as I think even the Luftwaffe would have struggled to find this place! It really is in the middle of nowhere and well off the ‘beaten track.’ That’s not December 2011 31

necessarily a bad thing though, since the last thing you want is a noisy racing circuit right next to a small town or village, so Blyton Park’s isolated location is ideal in that respect. The venue is used for a variety of motorsport and the first thing you see when you turn through the gates is the circuit used for Rallycross and grasstrack racing. To get to the track-day circuit you need to follow what used to be part of the airfield’s perimeter track for about one third of a mile until you see the large hangar with the main admin buildings alongside it.

This isn’t a racing circuit in the same sense as Silverstone, Donington or Brands Hatch; it doesn’t have a pit lane running alongside the start/finish straight, nor does it have any garages where cars can be worked on, and there aren’t

really any spectator stands as such, but the facilities at Blyton are perfectly adequate for track and testing days. One interesting feature is the Circuit Control building which sits on top of a small hill adjacent to ‘Twickers’ corner. The building was once used as a ticket office at the Twickenham Rugby stadium, so if you were wondering where the corner got its name from…there’s the answer! I still have vivid memories of the last time I was on an old airfield in rural Lincolnshire, and they aren’t particularly good ones. I remember the biting wind blowing across the flat landscape, the icy temperatures and feeling so cold that I just wanted to get in the car and go home!

2011, broke records for being the hottest October day on record in the UK. Hot sunshine and blue skies were the order of the day and the assembly of cars in the paddock looked superb as they sparkled in the sun. The group was made mostly up of GT40s, Cobras, Ultimas and GD40 Lola T70s. I met up with Desmond who had organised the day in conjunction with Javelin

Trackdays. He was standing near his Gulf liveried GT40 which had the engine covers off and a small crowd of people standing around it, peering intently at the 4.9 litre Ford engine. It transpired that the car had broken down on the way to the event and finished the journey rather ignominiously on the back of a flatbed truck. It turned out that a faulty MSD was to blame, and despite the best efforts

good surface The track itself consists of some very fresh tarmac laid over some of the original concrete runway and peri-track left over from World War Two. Thankfully the track surface is very good; the original runways built in 1942 had deteriorated badly after just a few years and were declared unfit for aircraft by the end of the war, but there are no such problems with the new tarmac. Being designed almost specifically for track days means that the track itself is actually quite narrow. It also has large run-off areas and there are no tyre walls or barriers for over-enthusiastic 36 CPR Magazine

drivers to damage their cars on.

Far and wide Around 30 cars had turned up for the day, with some drivers coming from as far away as Kent and Sussex. The number of cars meant that the

track was busy, but not overly congested, so everybody got all the time they wanted out on the circuit. For some drivers it was their first time out on a ‘proper’ track but a thorough briefing at the start of the session saw that everyone kept within the rules.

The absence of long straights meant that the vast power of cars fitted with 7 litre V8s could only be used sparingly, but the drivers of the more agile cars had great fun hurling their cars through the numerous twists and turns of the new track.

The car also has ‘Awesome Hairy Beastie’ written in white lettering under each door, but I’m still not sure if that refers to the car or the driver! At one point in the afternoon, Graham Kinross’ dark blue

If you take the wrong line into ‘Jochen,’ the next corner (The ‘Ump) becomes almost impossible and an off-track excursion become an

was that Blyton Park is a good circuit and most would go back and drive there again. The facilities are a little basic when compared to some of the more established circuits, but these will come in time. After all, you already have the track, some loos and a burger van…what more could you possibly want! December 2011 39

Chris Ayres’ hunt for a Ferrari 328 started back in the 1980s, when at the age of just 13, he told his father that one day he would buy his own Ferrari. That remark turned into an obsession, and the car he bought was the last 328 ever made.

series starring Tom Selleck which enthralled a generation of youngsters, while at the same time considerably boosting sales for the Italian manufacturer. One of those youngsters glued

Neither of them realized at the time that those two sentences would be the start of Chris’ obsession with the Ferrari marque, or that his father’s words would ultimately stick in his mind and become the driving force behind his quest to own such an exclusive car. Of course, the car used in the Magnum series was actually a

Ferrari 308GTS and not a 328 like the car Chris owns, but outwardly there appears to be very little difference. Under the skin though, they were far from the same car and many enthusiasts of the marque say the 328 is actually a 308 with all the bad bits taken out. in place of the more traditional steel unit, but this was later replaced by an all steel body. Power came from a 3.0 litre V8 while the gearbox retained the same unusual gear layout as the Dino, with first gear being to the left and back. It’s fair to say that the 308 was a big hit, and while it lacked the curvaceous lines of the Dino, its angular 80s styling made it look somehow more aggressive and faster than the earlier cars.

Design heritage.

Launched In Frankfurt 1975 as a replacement for the 246 Dino. In fact if you look at the Dino and the 308 sideby-side you can see striking similarities between the two models; from the fluted side ducts cutting through the doors, to the flat rear decking covering the engine, flanked 48 CPR Magazine

by bodywork sweeping down from the roof. Even the circular rear light styling can be found on both cars, so in some respects the 308 could be considered a ‘Dino for the 80s.’ Oddly enough, the first 308s built had a fibreglass bodyshell

The near identical Ferrari 328 was introduced at the 1985 Frankfurt motor show and those in attendance must have wondered what all the fuss was about. After all, this was just another 308…wasn’t it? Well, yes and no. It certainly looked like a 308 on the


outside, but the power now came from a larger 3.2 litre engine. However, if you look closely at the 328 you might notice some subtle changes around the front and rear ends where some of the panels have been reshaped slightly to give a more rounded appearance. Body coloured bumpers and new door handles were also part of the mild facelift exercise. There were some styling changes inside the car too. It had new patterns for the seat panel upholstery and stitching, reworked door panels and pulls and updated switches on the dash. New options made available to owners included air conditioning, metallic paint, Pirelli P7 tyres, a leather dashboard, leather headlining for the removable roof panel and a rear aerofoil.

Iconic Cars It is probably fair to say that the 308 and 328 were quite simply the most iconic cars of the 1980s and they are a perfect representation of that decade with their brash, aggressive styling and cool persona. While the ‘young and upwardly mobile’ (remember them?) were getting to grips with Commodore 64 computers and mobile phones the size of house bricks, the new Ferrari was seen as the ultimate status symbol for those working in the ‘City.’ Chris Ayres’ Ferrari 328 is a very special car though, for it is the very last one of the 7,400 328s ever made. Once his car had rolled off the production line, Ferrari turned its attention to the all-new F348, and the Magnum-era

Of course, for Chris the Ferrari remained very much one of his ‘life goals’ and he started planning his acquisition as soon as he began working. “I have always been fascinated by cars and as soon as I started earning money I was looking around for interesting cars to buy. When I was 19 I bought a Ford Capri 3000S and a few years later I got a brand new Ford Escort XR3i.

That was followed by a twodoor XR4i and then I ended up with a succession of rather less exciting company cars to run around in. During that time, I set up a separate bank account where I would save money, and when I had built up a reasonable amount, I invested in stocks and shares which helped build up the funds even further. Of course, there were other things going on too; I bought a house, got married and then got

divorced…which cost a lot of money, but all the while the whole objective was to get this Ferrari.”

Picking The Right Car I think we can safely say that Chris’ Ferrari wasn’t an impulse buy then, but how did 50 CPR Magazine

he end up with the immaculate 328 that he owns today? “Well I started looking about eight years ago. The first thing I did was join the owners’ club and then I started looking for suitable cars. I found one and even had an inspection done on it, but the owner pulled

out of the sale at the last minute. I carried on looking and eventually I came across the car I own now. It was in Hertfordshire and owned by a member of the Three Shires Ferrari Owners’ Club and it was everything I was looking for so I wasted no time and bought it. It was the realisation of a dream, but at the same time it was rather poignant because my dad whose words had been the driving force behind me buying the car was very ill at the time, and although he got to see it, he didn’t get a chance to have a ride in it and he died shortly afterwards.” It is a very moving story, but while Chris has the gleaming red Ferrari it will be a constant reminder of the man who

Chris has also been doing quite well in the business world and has built up a number of thriving companies, although he admitted to me that the main reason for becoming a successful entrepreneur was mainly to buy the Ferrari, so you could say that Chris’ father is responsible for guiding his career too.

Great Expectations

they don’t like the way it drives and quickly revert back to their modern cars. I was curious to find out if the Ferrari lived up to Chris’ expectations, so I asked him what he thought of it. “It’s just amazing! It surpassed my expectations. The only

criticism I have is that being 6ft 3in tall makes it a bit of a tight squeeze in the car, as all Ferraris seem to be designed for drivers no bigger than 5ft 8in. I have had the car out on track and when I’m wearing a helmet I have to leave the roof section out or I can’t fit in

I guess one of the problems with having a life-long dream is that sometimes the reality doesn’t match the expectations. I often hear of people who have wanted a particular type of classic car for many years, only to find that when they finally get one, December 2011 51

the car. Having said that, it is a stunning car to drive on the track; the handling is superb and it just feels impossible to lose it.”

Question: How do you spoil the look of a Ferrari? Answer: Switch the lights on!

Deep Pockets! Of course, buying a Ferrari is one thing, but running one is something else altogether. It’s bad enough owning a bog standard modern car where the cost of parts or servicing can reduce any grown man to tears, but with a Ferrari you’re going to need some pretty deep pockets, so how has Chris found the ‘ownership experience’? “Overall it hasn’t been too bad. I found a guy in Bedfordshire who seems to know just about all there is to know about the Ferrari 328 and he does all

the work on it, but generally the car has been very reliable. When I first got it though, it did have a rather embarrassing fault. Every now and then, usually when I stopped for petrol, the car would refuse to start. I’d turn the key and

all I’d get would be a constant clicking noise. I got it going again by putting it in first gear and rocking the car backwards and forwards, but doing that on a garage forecourt with lots of people looking on isn’t a great experience! The problem was December 2011 53


It might be his ‘dream car’ but Chris isn’t afraid to take it on the track! down to the pre-engage unit on the starter motor and my mechanic advised against getting a replacement from Ferrari because I would probably get the same problem after a another year or two. Instead, he ordered the pre-engage part of the starter solenoid from Germany and then fitted it when I took the car in for its next service and it’s been fine ever since. 54 CPR Magazine

Then a couple of years ago the clutch packed up on the way home from a car show. One of the rivets holding the friction material in place had broken so I had to have a new clutch fitted which cost about £600.00. Apart from that, the running costs have been quite reasonable. A normal service costs about £700.00 and if the cam-belt needs replacing then it rises to £1,200.00.”

So now Chris has the car of his dreams, does he get to take it out on the road every day? “No, not really. If I go out to see friends and I know they’ve got off-road parking then I’ll take the Ferrari, as long as the weather is nice of course. It never goes out if there is rain, snow or salt on the roads, so I suppose you could say it’s a fair weather car. The last thing I need is for the


chassis to start rotting away. Having said that, I did find out when I was over in Maranello recently that Ferrari now have a restoration department and they only charge €58.00 per hour for the labour, so maybe restoring one of these isn’t as expensive as you might think.” Looking around Chris’ car it is hard to believe that it is over 20 years old because it is absolutely immaculate. The good news is that while the car has its personality set firmly in the 1980s, the driver is of course free of such constraints, so you can comfortably drive it without the ridiculous moustache, Hawaiian shirts or even the mullet haircut! As for Chris, I am happy to report that he suffers from none of the above fashion faux-pas and I for one am thrilled that he finally got the car he so longed for. I guess the moral of the story is that if your children tell you that when they grow up they are going to buy a Ferrari, don’t be too quick to dismiss it because you might just be starting a life-long obsession.

Motor Show

Classic, Performance & Retro magazine celebrated its 1st birthday at this year’s Classic Motor Show at the NEC, Birmingham. Simon Hazeldine reports.

I

t was at last year’s Classic Motor Show that we launched Classic, Performance & Retro magazine, so this year’s show

was something of a ‘birthday party’ for us, and as birthday parties go, they don’t get much bigger than this! The Footman James Classic

Motor Show (to give it its full title) is one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the motoring calendar and this year the show was held on


November 11-13. Spread over five halls of the sprawling NEC complex, the show is also one of the biggest classic events in Europe and the quality of the cars on show is second to none. As usual, visitors were had

to endure the NEC’s tedious car parking system; the game seems to be to see how far away the NEC staff can park cars from the event. On the Friday, I dutifully followed the signs and ended up in one of the North car parks. No

courtesy buses in sight, so I set off on the long walk to the halls and half an hour later and I arrived at Hall 4. Next day I tried the South car parks; not any closer but at least there was a courtesy bus. I often wonder how many December 2011 67

people are put off attending these events due to the hassle of parking at the NEC. Still, I suppose we should be grateful that they aren’t charging £25.00 to park the car like Wembley and the O2 Arena does! Anyway, enough ranting. This year’s show promised to be one of the best yet, and despite the organisers 68 CPR Magazine

using that line nearly every year, they are usually right. The show just seems to get better and better each year. However, this year there seemed to be a lack of ‘star car’ announcements during the lead up to the show, so I wasn’t sure if the show would attract the numbers that previous years have seen. In the past we have seen

vehicles ranging from James Bond cars down to ‘Brum’ from the children’s TV programme of the same name. Okay, so this year the main star from the small screen seemed to be a 1911 Renault Type CB12/16hp which appeared in the costume drama Downton Abbey, and while it is undeniably a wonderful car, it doesn’t quite have the same appeal as a rocket laden Bond car.

Happy Birthday! Of course, classic car fans aren’t as fickle as that; they really aren’t that interested in ‘star cars’ or any other commercial attractions. The promise of acres of polished steel and chrome is more than enough to entice anyone with a serious interest in classic cars.

The restoration Workshop. As usual there were a couple of notable anniversaries being celebrated, apart from our own 1st birthday of course! It was the 100th anniversary of Ford cars in the UK which naturally saw a dazzling array of classic Fords being displayed by a seemingly endless number of Ford car clubs. The Triumph TR4 was also celebrating its 50th anniversary and there were some stunning examples of the type on display throughout the show, but more on that later.

Bugatti club stand. ‘Running in the Family’ theme, the Capri Club set its stand up to represent weddings, holidays and Christmas, and went to amazing lengths to make the display really eyecatching. For example, the club used half-a-ton of sand to create a beach scene, while a white Capri decked out with wedding paraphernalia was accompanied by club member Michelle Selby wearing a full wedding dress! Other club stands that caught 70 CPR Magazine

my eye were the ones from the Volkswagen Owners’ Club of Great Britain which had a recreation of the most famous of all Beetles – ‘Herbie,’ and the stand from the GT40 Enthusiasts’ Club also carried a stunning collection of the iconic racers. The Austin Counties Car Club’s presentation took the award for Best Small Club Stand and featured one of its cars emerging from a life-sized Dinky toy box. The Best Large

Club Stand Award went to The Military Vehicle Trust for its wonderful display of vehicles set in wartime dioramas, and of course the owners who dressed up in full military uniform. I wondered if the large four-barrelled antiaircraft gun on the stand had influenced the judges’ decision at all – ‘Give us the prize or we’ll open fire!”

Triumph TR4 is 50! Over on the TR Register’s stand the club was celebrating the TR4’s 50th birthday by displaying some interesting and unusual examples of the type. There were four TR4s on show, and among these was a 1962 car used by the Southend-on-Sea County Borough Constabulary as a fast pursuit vehicle. Alongside that car was one of the ex-

‘Eleanor’ Anyone with a taste for ‘car chase’ movies will have been drawn to a certain car on the Silverstone Auctions stand as they had a stunning recreation of the Shelby GT500 Mustang that featured in the film ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ starring Nicholas Cage and Angelina Jolie. ‘Eleanor’ – as the car is known in the film – looked amazing and externally looked identical to the car from the movie. A glance inside revealed that Carol Shelby had signed the dashboard which probably helped the car sell for a price of £89,000 at a recent sale.

Bear Hunt The line-up was stunning, but I was saddened to hear that the local Police force seemed to by deliberately picking on the ‘Dream Rides’ cars and were following the club members in unmarked Police cars and issuing tickets to anyone who even slightly exceeded the speed limit. It was obviously a deliberate operation as there 72 CPR Magazine

could be no other reason to post an unmarked patrol car outside the NEC; you would think that the Police resources would be better used targeting some of the idiots driving at crazy speeds on the nearby M6, but I suppose the cops get a kick out of pulling over a Ferrari. Usually, I am very pro-Police, but on this occasion they went over the top and deliberately picked on people raising money for children. Anyway, back to the halls and there was still lots going on to

keep visitors amused. Over on the ‘Live Stage’ in Hall 2, TV’s ‘Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Bruer and Ed China were presenting their usual madcap brand of entertainment with a motoring themed version of the Generation Game, quizzes and interviews. I chatted with Mike after one of the shows and mentioned that I found the recent ‘American Beauty’ trailer for the latest series rather disturbing (if you haven’t seen it, it features Mike wearing white overalls writhing around in a huge pile of rose petals). “You know what?” said Mike, “They wanted me to do it naked, but I quickly told them what they could do with that idea!”

Stars On Two Wheels Two other star names appearing on the Live Stage were motorcycle racing legends Karl Fogarty and Pierfrancesco ‘Frankie’ Chili. The two racers were interviewed by Mike Bruer and gave a fascinating talk about their respective careers before heading back to the Classic Motorbike Show in Hall 9. Bill’s car was displayed alongside a beautiful Ferrari 275 GTB/4 and an equally pretty MGB Roadster which had the clearest plastic windows I have ever seen on any sports car hood. Greenwood Exhibitions was also holding a draw for two places on its London to Brighton Classic Car run. Greenwood’s proprietor Stephen Smith was on hand as his glamorous assistants Amelia and Holly drew the tickets and announced the lucky winners.

Remembering Back to the club scene, and one stand that had a particularly poignant and appropriate theme was the one from the Morris Minor Owners’ Club. The display featured several club cars parked on a ‘village square’ scene complete with its own war memorial. It was this memorial that became something of a focal point twice over the weekend when a two minute silence was observed on the Friday for Armistice Day and then again on the Sunday for Remembrance Day. The stand had a great collection of cars on display, including a Morris Travellers, a Pick-Up, a convertible and a wonderful split-screen early saloon. Across on the Singer Owners’ Club stand was another rather special car. The green Singer 1½ Litre Le Mans which took pride of place is the only car to ever have won an Olympic gold medal. The car took part in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games and was driven by Miss Betty Haig.

Herbie goes to...er, Birmingham! The Bugatti Owners’ Club also had an impressive line-up of machinery on its stand, both ancient and modern. Among the older cars were two 1927 Type 37s and a 1932 Type 51. Bringing the display up to date was a Bugatti Veyron finished in the traditional Bugatti blue with highly polished steel doors and wings, a scheme that harked back to the Bugatti Type 35s from the 1920s.

MGB Improved Over on the MG Owners’ Club stand, the guys from the club spares department were showing off their latest new product. It was a replacement front crossmember assembly for the MGB which had been modified to use ball-joints instead of the archaic kingpin and stub-axle assemblies. The modified set-up also means that the ride height can easily be adjusted and telescopic dampers replace to near prehistoric lever-arm units originally fitted to the car to improve the ride still further. Chris Bentley from MGOC Spares told me that when used with the club’s powersteering kit, the new cross-

He added that the product had only just been developed and was so new that they hadn’t even set a price for it yet! We have been promised a test-drive of a car fitted with the new kit, so watch this space. Overall I have to say that the Classic Motor Show is probably the UK’s premier motoring event. Show organiser Andy Rouse certainly seemed happy with how things had gone over the weekend but looked

completely worn out as he gave his closing speech on the Live Stage during Sunday afternoon. As for the numbers, apparently there were 3,000 more visitors than there was last year, with approximately 48,000 people visiting the show over the weekend. Now that it’s all over, all that’s left to do is start planning again for next year, and if it is anywhere near as good as this year’s show, it will certainly be one not to miss. We’ll see you there! Top Gear Live

Next door to this year’s Classic Motor Show was Top Gear Live. David Harrison dropped into the accompanying exhibition to find out what was on offer.

O

kay, before you get too excited, I really should point out that this review isn’t about the actual live performance of Top Gear, which involved the programme’s three presenters getting up to all sorts of antics in the NEC’s Hall 1. No, this report is about the accompanying exhibition run in conjunction with the live show, which promised to feature some seriously impressive supercars, along with lots of motoring related trade stands. Previous years saw Top Gear Live being run alongside the MPH Show, and while it might not have been on the same scale as the Classic Motor Show (CMS), it did at least fill the hall with exhibitors and there always seemed to be something going on. It also added some extra value for visitors to the CMS as their ticket also 76 CPR Magazine

got them into the MPH Show, although they would still have to purchase an additional ticket if they wanted to see the Top Gear presenters do their stuff in the live arena. This year was a bit different though. For what ever reason, it seemed that Top Gear had ditched the MPH Show and decided to host its own exhibition. Not quite sure what motivated the move, but the previous format seemed to work reasonably well, so I was curious to see exactly what was on offer inside the large hall. As it turned out, I’d have to say it was a bit of a let down. I managed to go into the exhibition, see everything on display, and leave just 20 minutes later! I was surprised and disappointed to see massive, empty areas of dead space where there should have been exhibitors, and


many of the traders looked distinctly underwhelmed by the lack of interest in their products. The atmosphere was flat too, a stark contrast to the buzzing halls over at the Classic Motor Show. So what exactly was on offer at the Top Gear Live exhibition? Well, the highlights were probably some of the supercars on display, among which were a Ferrari Enzo and 458, a Koenigsegg Agera and a Mercedes Benz CLK GTR. Nobody could deny that those are great cars, but if you wanted to get a good photo of any of the cars you could forget it. Each vehicle was surrounded by white fencing; yes it might have been necessary to keep any over-enthusiastic visitors at bay, but it was wrapped so tightly around the cars that it made photography impossible. The busiest stand seemed to be the one promoting the new Playstation driving game ‘Need for Speed,’ and if it wasn’t the busiest, it was certainly the noisiest! In fact a large percentage of the stands at the show seemed to be catering for gaming or simulation of some sort, from the previously mentioned console games to fonedriver. com which had a single-seater chassis on its stand with a flat screen mounted in front of the cockpit. Elsewhere, the Top Gear stand was hosting some of the bizarre automotive creations from the show which were proving to be popular with visitors. Just like last year, the trusty (or is that rusty?) old Herald ‘sailing boat’ was on show, along with the Lexus Police car (with ‘Rozzers’

written across the doors) and a few other interesting cars. Across the hall, the guys from Mills Extreme Vehicles (MEV) were busy promoting their attractive selection of top-end kit-cars and the all important performance figures seemed to be getting the approval of the Top Gear ‘petrolheads.’ Once past the MEV stand, visitors seemed to get lost in a large void of empty space. The kids seemed to enjoy it though, as I saw several younger children running around the space and treating it like some big indoor heated playground. On the other side of the 80 CPR Magazine

void were four small stands, including the now obligatory remote controlled helicopter vendor. I felt a little sorry for them as I know from past experience just how much it costs to have a stand at a show like this, and these particular stands were not benefiting from any real footfall while I was there. People would stop at the edge of the void, peer across at the stands, and then decide it wasn’t worth the walk and head off in a different direction. Overall I found the Top Gear Live exhibition to be very disappointing. Last year’s

This Aston Martin was being offered as a competition prize! show wasn’t brilliant, but at least the hall was full and there was enough to keep you amused for an hour or two. Yes, it was an added distraction to the Classic Motor Show and CMS visitors could get in free, but quite frankly, the Sporting Bears ‘Dream Rides’ hall in the CMS had more ‘supercars’ than the Top Gear show, and the 20 minutes it took me to get around the hall would have been better spent in the classic car show. Hopefully the lessons will have been learned by next year but I guess we’ll just have to wait & see.

This year’s Petit Le Mans ALMS race marked the end of an eventful season for the Robertson Racing Team. A crash on the Friday practice session meant the car had to be heavily repaired before the race, but would it stay together until the final lap?

obertson Racing survived a chaotic 14th annual Petit Le Mans to come home 12th in class and 26th overall as the curtain came down on their 2011 84 CPR Magazine

American Le Mans Series season. Andrea Robertson, David Murry and Melanie Snow produced a mistakefree display at Road Atlanta aboard the #40 Ford GT in what was perhaps their

toughest sportscar outing of the year. The combination of 50-plus starters, Road Atlanta’s reasonably short 12-turn layout and stifling conditions ensured the trio had their

work cut out to maintain their concentration throughout the 1000 mile/10 hour race as the gaggle of faster prototypes took few prisoners while lapping slower traffic. Ironically, in the early stages

Melanie Snow then sampled her first taste of Petit Le Mans 2011 around the half-distance mark. Having also performed admirably in the tricky circumstances to maintain 12th, it was left to David Murry and then Andrea Robertson to reel off the final hours without further incident. After the race, Team Manager Andrew ‘H’ Smith said: “I’m delighted with how well Andrea, Melanie and David performed in such tricky conditions. a lot of risks to get past, but fortunately we’ve got a pretty tough car. Mind you, it’s wearing a few bruises to tell the tale! As we demonstrated with the Le Mans 24 Hours podium earlier this year, reliability is definitely our strong point and that certainly played a part. “Now that the season is over we can go away and assess our options for 2012. All in all it’s been a good year with the Le Mans result obviously a highlight. But as a team we’ve taken great steps forward, a fact demonstrated by the pro car’s performances. It’s no secret that we are

seeking investment that will help us continue to make progress. Finally, I’d like to personally thank all those who have supported us.

We know the Ford GT has become something of a fanfavourite and rest-assured we are doing all we can to keep it racing into 2012.”

RM Auctions concluded its 2011 sales calendar on a high note in London on Wednesday October 26, posting over £13.3 million in total sales with a solid 79% of all lots sold. Attracting an international clientele – bidders represented 22 countries from around the world - the single-day auction catered to collectors of both automobiles and motorcycles, presenting an exceptional roster of some 100 motor cars and 25 classic two-wheelers. The star performer at this year’s sale was a rare, matching-numbers 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Tour de France Berlinetta, chassis number 1039 GT, one of the most desirable competition-bred Ferraris in existence. Glistening under the auction lights, the beautiful red and white 250 GT LWB Tour de France garnered spirited bidding in the room and on the phones, achieving an outstanding final sales price of £2,240,000. 90 CPR Magazine
