Editorial For many of us poor classic car owners here in the UK, it might feel like it’s time to admit defeat and go out and buy a boat. Yep, once again the news programmes seem to be full of stories about towns and villages being flooded due to heavy rain and having antiquated drainage systems that simply can’t cope. Less than a mile from where I am typing this there is a road under water (see pic below!) and there is no chance of getting through it by car...unless of course you are lucky enough to own a classic Amphicar. Actually, there’s an idea...anybody got one for sale? Of course, once all the water has drained away, we will still be left with some difficult driving conditions, but that doesn’t mean that your classic has to come off the road. Check out our feature on winter driving for some very useful advice and some neat tips. Elsewhere in this issue we have a report from the fantastic Footman James Classic Motor Show at the NEC Birmingham which is packed with lots of great pictures from this great show. We also have another great show report from the Silverstone MotorsportUK show which aims to cater for anyone wanting to try their hand at motorsport for the first time. As this is the last issue before Christmas, we would just like to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Due to the holidays there wont be a January issue of the magazine, but we will be back with the February 2013 issue at the end of January. The Latest Automotive News From Around The World!

Changes For Brooklands Double Twelve Following the success of this year’s Brooklands Double Twelve Motorsport Festival, which saw over 5,500 people attend over the two day event, the Double Twelve will return in 2013 on June 15-16. Once again, it is expected to be the biggest motoring competition held at Brooklands since 1939 and is being organised in association with the Vintage Sports-Car Club and held on the weekend closest to the anniversary of its original opening date of 17th June 1907. Some changes will be introduced at next year’s event. The structure of the competitions is changing to encourage entrants to enjoy a full weekend of motoring competition, but if competitors can only make one day, then there is still an opportunity to take part in one of the unique competitions that have been designed to cater for all tastes. There will be three stand-alone events: The Double Twelve Speed Trials on the Mercedes-Benz World circuit on Saturday 15th June; The Double Twelve Concours held on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June; The Double Twelve Driving Tests on Sunday 16th June. Each event will have its own class winners, but to achieve a Brooklands Double Twelve award, an entrant must compete in any two of the three events and the combined scores of these two events will decide their Double Twelve placing. This means that a car may enter the Speed Trials on the Saturday and then the Driving Tests on the Sunday. Alternatively a car can be entered for the Concours on the Saturday and take part in the Driving Tests on the Sunday and a car could also be entered for the Speed Trials on Saturday and be judged in the Concours on Sunday. Green Light For Sywell Show

Event organiser Live Promotions is launching a brand new motoring festival celebrating classic vehicles both on the ground and in the air. ‘Sywell Classic – Pistons and Props’ will be held at Northamptonshire’s Sywell Aerodrome on September 28-29, 2013, and will combine classic cars, motorbikes and aircraft with all aspects of vintage lifestyle and entertainment. “Sywell Classic brings together the best of all the classic motoring events in the calendar, with amazing static displays, live action both on the ground and in the air, great family entertainment and a wide range of vintage and classic traders,” Event Director Tom Siddall explains. “The facilities at Sywell Aerodrome are superb and it has a great atmosphere with its fantastic aviation museum and art deco buildings. There couldn’t be a better venue for an event of this kind.” Classic motoring clubs are invited to display their marques for free, bringing from five to 15 examples of their chosen marque. Vintage planes such as Tiger Moths and Spitfires will put on displays of their own overhead while back on the ground, live music and a vintage funfair and sideshow will keep families entertained. West Midlands Mini Crimewave Classic Mini owners in the West Midlands area of the UK are being asked to be on their guard after a spate of thefts during the past month. West Midlands Police say that a significant number of cars have been taken, ranging from early restoration projects to later road worthy cars. It is thought that the thefts are as a result of the Mini’s value rising sharply over recent years, combined with the car’s primitive locks and security measures, which make the cars tempting targets for thieves. The Police are asking owners to make sure that they take the appropriate precautions and keep their cars secure at all times. If anyone has any information, or has seen anything suspicious, they should contact West Midlands Police on the non-emergency 101 number or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

‘Holy Cow Batman...They’re Selling Our Car!’ It looks like the ‘Caped Crusader’ and ‘Boy Wonder’ will have to travel by foot in future as their original ‘Batmobile’ is set to be sold at the Barrett Jackson Scottsdale sale on January 13-20. The car was used during the making of the ‘Batman’ television series which was filmed between 1966 - 1968 and was created by George Barris. The car was based on a 1955 Lincoln ‘Futura’ concept car which was powered by a 429cu/in Ford V8 engine boosted by nitrous injection and dual Paxton blowers. The estimated price? Well, that’s anybody’s guess, but with replicas selling for prices in excess of $200,000, the real thing should fetch crazy money. The car has been apart of the personal collection of George Barris since he first bought it from the Ford Motor Company for $1. After having a meeting with the producer of the TV Show, William Dozier, George was left with the challenge of 15 days and $15,000 budget. Before George knew it, the Lincoln Futura was underway to becoming what others will always remember to be the Original Batmobile. Besides seeing the likes of the infamous, Adam West and Burt Ward (Batman and Robin), this car has been on a variety of television/movie sets, car shows and museums around the nation. To go even further, this car is exclusively featured in Christopher Nolan’s Batmobile Documentary, which is one of the major bonuses in the Dark Knight Rise’s DVD.

Rainman Buick Going Under The Hammer In Dallas A famous icon from the movie world is set to be auctioned in December when the 1949 Buick Roadmaster Convertible used in the film Rainman is set to be auctioned by Heritage Auctions in Dallas. The car is one of two identical models used in the film. Interestingly, the whole plot revolves around this car, and its presence in almost every scene makes it the third important “character” after actors Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, the latter of whom won a ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ Oscar for his portrayal of the autistic “Raymond Babbit.” Included are a number of pieces of paperwork showing that this car was rented and used by MGM/UA for the film. Despite the sale taking place in Dallas, Texas, the car is actually located in Sacramento, California, and the auctioneer stresses that the successful bidder is responsible for collecting the car from its current location. The car is expected to fetch in excess of $80,000 and bidding is already taking place on the auctioneers website which lists a starting bid of $40,000.

Classic Motor Show Sets New Visitor Record It’s official. This year’s Footman James Classic Motor Show had its biggest attendance ever as early calculations show the number of visitors to be 58,000. The organisers say that even this is a conservative figure and could be closer to 60,000 when the final count is confirmed. If the higher figure is realised, then it will mean the show attracted a massive 10,000 more visitors than it did in 2011. Show Manager, Andy Rouse, said: “We are totally blown away by the number of visitors for this year. It’s exceeded all our expectations and reflects the growth and strength of the classic motoring movement. Feedback from the clubs, traders and visitors has been fantastic. The new layout worked well and we’ll use any feedback to develop the show for 2013. With a show of this scale and with the number of visitors attending, its always our priority to improve the way visitors can move around the show to enjoy all the exhibits.” Also released are a few interesting facts and figures about this years show: Amount of floor space – 82,000 square metres (last year 70,000); Halls: 11 (Halls 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, and 20); Number of clubs: 250; Number of cars: approx. 1,500; Number of bikes: approx. 300; Number of Exhibitors: over 520; Number of Car Dealers: approx 43. The dates for next years show have been confirmed as November 15-17, 2013.

New Race Series For British Sports Cars A new Sprint Championship is being launched by the TVR Car Club with its first race being held at Lydden Hill Circuit on April 6, 2013. The TVRCC Classic Marques Handicap Challenge is open to owners of classic British sports cars who wish to compete against their peer group on equal terms, and invitations are extended to owners of British rear wheel drive sports cars made by Aston Martin, Austin Healey, Ginetta, Lotus, Marcos, MG, Morgan, Reliant, Triumph, and TVR. The club says other manufacturers may be added in due course. A statement on the club’s website said: “At TVRCC Motorsport HQ we believe that sprint and hillclimb events are all about today - today’s entrants, today’s conditions, who is the best driver today. We do not refer to past events, best times, course records etc. We allocate each car a handicap rating based upon power / weight / tyres and that value is fixed until the spec of the car changes. This system has been tuned over the last 12 years and has produced exciting championships and close results for the TVRCC Speed Championship.”

Targa Iberia set for October 2013 The Targa Iberia is set to burst on to the historic motor sport scene for 2013 with a new, innovative route catering for GT, sports cars and touring cars up to 1986. The brainchild of Spanish motor sport entrepreneur Jesus Pozo, the event will fill the void left by the defunct Tour Espana and run in the same spirit as existing European historic rally competitions, such as Tour Auto and Tour Britannia. The route, which will be announced shortly, will include four permanent racetracks and plenty of southern Iberian Peninsula roads. There will be a mix of competition and regularity tests as well as emphasis on the entertainment and social side of the event. There will be classes for: Touring Cars, Competition Touring, Grand Touring, Competition Grand Touring, Grand Touring Prototypes and Sport Prototypes and the end try will be divided in to periods, ranging from 1919 up to 1986. Event creator and organiser Jesus Pozo said: “I’m really excited to be able to announce the new Targa Iberia. On the back of the successful Espiritu de Montjuic historic race weekend, there is a real growth in interest and demand for historic motor sport in Spain and Portugal and this event will be something new and different, not just for the area but for competitors as well. “We will be announcing the route shortly, but it will include four superb permanent motor racing venues and some excellent roads as well. We will confirm the dates soon, but it will be at the end of October into early November, allowing everyone to come to enjoy an Iberian holiday after the four days of competition.” More details of the route, event dates and regulations will be announced soon, along with the event’s website. The date is to be confirmed by the Spanish and Andalusian motor sport governing bodies.

Le Mans Legend 2013: Eligible Years Announced The annual support race at the Le Mans 24 Hours is a jewel in the crown of historic motorsport. On Saturday 22nd June 2013, the Le Mans Legend will once again return to La Sarthe with a sensational grid of 61 Le Mans cars from the 1949-65 era. Each year, Motor Racing Legends – the organisation behind the Le Mans Legend – selects an era of Le Mans history and invites genuine race cars and their sister cars from that period to take part in a highly nostalgic, but highly competitive historic race on the full 8.5-mile Le Mans circuit. Not only is this a chance to see real Le Mans-style cars from the past in full, on-track action at the venue where they were born to race, but it takes place just a few hours before the start of the modern 24 Hours, on the Saturday morning of the Le Mans weekend. Next year, the historic action will be a two-driver race on Saturday 22nd June 2013, with cars from 1949 to 1965 again doing battle at Le Mans: think AC Cobra and Aston Martin DBR1, Lister Knobbly and Ferrari 250LM, Jaguar D-type and Iso Bizzarrini. But it’s not just the big bruisers at the front of the grid that demand attention. Right through the field, we can expect evocative cars of all sizes and shapes that capture the essence of Le Mans in the 1950s and early ’60s: Alfa Romeo TZ1, Porsche 904/6, Triumph TR2, Aston DB2, Jaguar XK120, Lotus, MG, Austin-Healey, Frazer Nash… The Le Mans 24 Hours is, without doubt, the greatest endurance event in the history of motorsport – but while it’s the modern might of Audi and its rivals that makes headlines around the world, the Le Mans Legend historic support race also captures the hearts of the 200,000-plus visitors who make the pilgrimage to La Sarthe for that magical weekend in mid-June. Not to mention the vast audience across Europe who watched last year’s televised Le Mans Legend. If you’re looking for the chance to exercise your cherished Mini on some quiet country roads and sample some fabled Irish hospitality you should sign up now for the Mini Cooper Register’s 2013 Minis to Ireland tour. This week-long event begins on Thursday 19 September and features six full days of motoring on a 1,300 mile route that takes in some of Ireland’s most spectacular roads and scenery. For crews from the UK mainland the start and finish will be at Fishguard ferry port in Wales. Irish entrants can join the event at Arklow. All crews will be supplied with a detailed Tulip-style roadbook that marks every key junction and change of direction and there will be the added reassurance of an experienced service crew in attendance around the entire route. From Fishguard crews and cars will take the 2.30 pm ferry to Rosslare and stay the first night in Arklow. Friday 20 September will offer some scenic motoring to, in and around the Wicklow Mountains, with Donegal being the night halt for Friday and Saturday. Saturday 21 September involves a circular drive out from Donegal and back or, if you prefer, a rest day ahead of Sunday’s journey south to Sligo, County Mayo and an overnight halt in Galway. Monday 23 September will see crews travelling south again, to Limerick and on to Kenmare, the overnight halt for Monday and Tuesday, which gives crews the option of another rest day or a circular route taking in some of the region’s magnificent coastline and its challenging roads. Wednesday 25 September brings a change of direction with the route heading east, using some of the roads that have featured in previous Circuit of Ireland International rallies and finishing the day in Wexford from where crews will head back to Rosslare on Thursday morning, for the 9.00 am boat to Fishguard. “Ireland has regularly featured in our touring calendar and it will be good to be going back again next year,” says Mini Cooper Register Chairman, Robert Young. “The event is open to Minis and new MINIs of all types and ages, not just classic Coopers, and there is already a lot of interest from potential entrants.” www.minicooper.org

VCC Welcomes Car Clubs To Its Ashwell Club House The Veteran Car Club of Great Britain, the world’s oldest old car club, hosted an ‘At Home’ day at their Ashwell Headquarters on Tuesday 16th October. The club welcomed senior officers from many other clubs including The Vintage Sports-Car Club, The Bentley Drivers’ Club, The Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club, the Aston Martin Owners’ Club, the Bugatti Owners’ Club and the De Dion Bouton Club UK. The lunchtime gathering was hosted by VCC President, Stewart Skilbeck, who warmly welcomed the new Chairman of The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, David Whale, who outlined the current activities of the federation. The Veteran Car Club was delighted to show the visitors its outstanding library and research facility along with other significant motoring artefacts including The Gordon Bennett Trophy and the banner carried by the Pilot Car in the Emancipation Run of 1896 – surely the most significant event in British motoring history. Nick Pellett’s 1914 TT Sunbeam and Tim Moore’s 6hp De Dion Bouton represented a cross section of VCC members’ cars which were joined by some of the guests’ slightly later models in the entrance at Jessamine Court. Stewart Skilbeck reported that “the event provided an opportunity for like-minded clubs to share ideas looking to the future of our movement – it was amazing how much we had in common despite catering for such a diverse group of vehicles. Winter Driving Are You Prepared?

Last month we looked at storing your classic over the winter, but what if you want to keep driving it? The good news is that it is possible to enjoy your car all year round, but you need to put in a bit of effort to keep it in A1 condition.

ast month we looked at a few of the tips and tricks commonly used by enthusiasts when laying up a classic over the winter months, but what if you are really determined to keep driving your car, regardless of what the weather throws

at you? Well, the good news is that it is doable, but you’re going to have to be prepared for a lot of preparation and cleaning. If you want to keep your car in top condition then it’s going to take a fair bit of effort. As mentioned in the last issue,

there is no doubt that taking the car off the road and storing it over the winter is the best thing for its bodywork. The roads in the UK rarely dry out completely this time of year and the salt-laden spray that coats your car as you drive along can cause immense


damage to the body, especially underneath. The flip side to all this is that by keeping the car on the road you will neatly avoid many of the common problems associated with storage. For example; if a car is left to sit for several months, the rubber seals inside brake and clutch cylinders can bond themselves to the innercylinder wall. Should this happen, the first time you depress the brake or clutch pedal, the rubber seals will be damaged and fluid will start to leak from the system. The worst case scenario is total brake failure when the seal fails completely, but at the very least you are looking at dismantling your brake and clutch hydraulics so you can replace all the seals, and that is something you want to avoid. Talking of the clutch, it is quite common for the clutch-plate

to bond itself to the flywheel if left unused for several months, and usually it requires either an engine or gearbox removal to repair it. All of those problems can be avoided if the car is kept on the road. Another big problem with storing the car is that all the residual oil that has coated the inner-workings of your engine will gradually drain back into the sump leaving unprotected

cylinder wall exposed to any moisture in the atmosphere. keeping the car on the road ensures a healthy supply of oil will be sloshing around inside your engine, so that’s one less thing to worry about. The following pages look in detail as the most important areas of the car and explain what to look for, as well as how best to prepare your car for the winter roads.

1 Ignition If your ignition system is in poor shape, you going nowhere. It is amazing how many people neglect this basic system even though ignition parts for classics are usually inexpensive and readily available. If you plan to drive the car through the winter, make sure you replace the points, rotor arm and condenser if they are fitted to your car. While you’re at it, change the spark plugs for a new set and the same with the plug leads if they haven’t been done for a while. The coil is also worth looking at and if in doubt, replace that too. Doing the whole lot on something like an MGB will cost around £50.00, so it wont break the bank. Of course, another option is to replace the rather primitive original items with an electronic igition kit. The Lumenition range is very popular with classic enthusiasts, and their Magnetronic kit can be bought for about £90.00 and the whole thing is fitted inside the distributor. The Optronic unit has an external power unit and is a little more expensive at around £180.00. What ever you have fitted, make sure your timing

is also spot on. Get it slightly out and it could make the difference between your car starting, or not, on a very cold day.

2 Tyres

In some parts of Europe, special winter tyres are compulsory if you want to use your car all year round, but here in the UK that is not the case. You can make do with your normal road tyres but you still need to pay a little extra attention to them. Perhaps the most important point is condition what state are your tyres in? The UK law states that there must be at least 1.6mm of tread left for it to be legal, but if your tyres

are right on the limit, they will be next to useless on snow. Make sure there is enough tread on your tyres to hold the road effectively and replace any that are well worn. If you live in an area which gets a lot of snow each year, then a set of snow chains could be a good investment, however they should only be used on packed snow and ice, not on tarmac. Snow chain prices start at around £35.00 per pair so they are not too expensive, but they are fiddly to fit. There are some people who say that you should slightly deflate your tyres during the winter months, reasoning that a flatter tyre is wider, and therefore offers more surface contact with the road. Quite frankly, that is rubbish. You can use the deflating trick if you get stuck in snow, mud or sand, and it will sometimes get you out, but for normal driving the tyres should be inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Tyre companies carry out vast amounts of research to find out what makes their tyres work best...but if you think you know better...


3 Bodywork

When it comes to bodywork, there is one major rule - keep it clean! Invest in a pressure washer and thoroughly blast every trace of mud, salt and grime from your car at least once a week. Pay special attention to under the wheel arches and the bottom of the car as these are often overlooked. Then dry the car, wax and polish. Make sure any stonechips in the paintwork are covered immediately. Put it off for a month and rust will start to form. Apply a generous coat of wax polish to your paintwork, and give all your chrome brightwork a good covering too. The chrome on modern repro parts is notoriously poor and you could find the chrome peeling off before you know it. Smear grease on the backs of bumpers, grilles and over-riders, keep them clean, and check frequently.

4 Glass

Obviously, make sure you keep all your windows clear so you can see clearly, but pay extra attention to the inside, as the residue that builds up over time can cause very bad glare from the low winter Sun. Likewise, a half-hearted clean is worse than not cleaning at all since your smeary windscreen will go opaque as soon as the Sun hits it. If there is any damage to your screen, now is the time to fix it. Small chips like the one above will allow moisture into the screen and if it freezes, it will crack the screen beyond repair. If you have a car with a soft-top, be extra careful. The plastic rear windows get extremely brittle in cold temperatures and will crack if folded. This often means the entire hood will need replacing, and that’s not cheap!

Always carry a spare fuse for your heated rear screen - you might just need it!

Spray WD40 in door locks to prevent them from freezing.

Apply a heavy coat of wax to chrome bumpers & other brightwork.

Make sure tyres have at least 3mm of tread left to handle snow & ice.

5 Lights If you are using your classic as your regular car, chances are that you drive it to and from work which means you’ll be driving in the dark most of the time. If that’s the case, make sure your lights are in excellent condition. It’s fair to say that the old sealed-beam units don’t exactly emit masses of light, so if they are fitted to your car, you’ll want to think seriously about a Halogen Conversion Kit. These are surprisingly inexpensive with Wipac kits starting at around £35.00 for a pair of Halogen lamps which will dramatically improve your view of the road ahead in the dark. Now is also a good time to check the bulbs, lenses and gaskets on all your lamps. If the lens seal has failed, water can get inside the lamp unit and corrode the bulb holder and short out your electrics. Keep the lenses clean and replace any that are cracked. If your car is fitted with fog lamps, please use them correctly. The

law states that visibility must be BELOW 100 metres before you can use fog lamps. Do not use them in rain or light mist, and if you are in a queue of traffic, do the guy behind a favour and turn them off!


Check screen for stone-chips and repair. Replace if cracked.

Replace worn wiper blades; Fill washer bottle with screen cleaner.

Check oil & antifreeze; Change plugs, points, condenser & disi cap.

Check headlight bulbs; Replace sealed-beam units with a Halogen kit.

6 Engine Starting is one of the biggest challenges your classic will face in the sub-zero conditions, but there are a few things you can do to improve its chances. First of all, make sure the battery is in top condition. Just because it worked fine in the summer doesn’t mean it will hold enough power to turn your engine over in freezing conditions. Get it tested, and if it’s weak, replace it. Another good tip is that when starting the car, always depress the clutch so it disconnects the engine from the gearbox. It reduces the weight that the starter has to turn and uses less battery power. Make sure you have the necessary amount of anti-freeze in your radiator. If it hasn’t been changed for a while, drain it out and refill it. Check the oil too. Some cars use a different grade for winter running, so change that too if required. As well as all the above, make sure you give your engine a full service. Fit new plugs, points,

leads and condenser. Fit a new distributor cap too if it look worn, and while your under to bonnet, change the thermostat.

7 Chassis

Grease those nipples! It’s easy to see when things are not right on the visible surfaces of the car, but make sure you don’t forget the important stuff underneath. Most classics have lots of grease nipples on things like the suspension, propshaft and hand-brake cables. Some require grease, others need oil, so check the lubrication chart for your car if unsure. They are available free from Castrol Classic Oils (01954 231668) if you don’t have one. Give your chassis and suspension a really good clean. Get all of the dirt and grit out of the joints

and give the whole lot a generous coating of WD40 or a similar moisture repellent, avoiding areas like brake drums and discs of course! If your car has been treated with a wax-based corrosion inhibitor such as Waxoyl, this is a good opportunity to top it up. It is also worth checking the adjustment on your wheel bearings. Metal contracts in cold weather, so if its freezing, there will be more play in the bearing than there was during the summer. Usually there will be hardly any difference, but still worth checking all the same.

8 General Maintenance There is of course a lot of general maintenance items that can help tremendously towards keeping your car on the road throughout the winter months. Keep lots of screenwash in your windscreen washer bottle to prevent it freezing. Replace worn wiper-blades and don’t use wipers to clear ice from the windscreen. It will rapidly damage the blades. Coat battery terminal with Vaseline to prevent corrosion building up. Keep your fuel tank topped up as you the chances of long diversions due to road closures is increased and it helps prevent condensation building up inside the tank. To stop your windows misting up, soak a clean cloth in neat washing up liquid and allow it to dry. Then wipe it over your clean windows and magically they will stay mist free! Try and run your air conditioning (if fitted) at least once a week as it helps keep the system working. Squirt some WD40 into the door and boot locks to prevent them from freezing. And finally, don’t use hot or boiling water to de-ice the windscreen and it can crack the glass. The water will also run down onto your driveway, freeze overnight, and become a slippery hazard next morning. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

Silverstone Now in its second year, the MotorsportUK show has moved to Silverstone to provide a more ‘active’ show with track action as well as static displays for visitors to enjoy. Simon Hazeldine called in to find out more.

L

ast year saw the birth of a brand new automotive show which aimed to cater for the needs of fledgling racing drivers, or anyone thinking about taking their first steps into competitive racing. MotorsportUK, as it was then known, was held at the impressive Ricoh Arena in Coventry, and while the attendance figures might have been a little disappointing, the show itself was excellent. The show covered just about every type of motorsport you can think of, including karting, club racing, the Saker series, Ginetta racing and much more besides. The show also had strong support from the kit car world which was preaching the ‘build it and race it yourself’ message to good effect. There was even one or two stands catering for powerboat racing and even 24 www.cprmag.com


hovercraft racing, so it really did tick all the boxes. Despite stumbling on a good format first time round, a decision was made to switch this year’s show to the new exhibition space inside Silverstone’s striking ‘Wing’ building, with some cars and exhibitors even taking up residence in the ‘Formula1’ garages down on the ground floor. In theory, it sounded like a great idea. After all, Silverstone is recognised as the home of British motorsport, so where better for a motorsport show? The event would also be run in conjunction with Silverstone which meant it was rebranded as the ‘Silverstone MotorsportUK’ show, and with the circuit’s marketing department throwings its considerable weight behind the show, visitor numbers would surely be up on last year. Manufacturers exhibiting at the event could even take potential buyers out on the circuit for a test drive and the promise of a little ‘live action’ would help attract even more people through the doors. Yep, which ever way you looked at it, you would have to say that the move, on paper at least, sounded like a great idea.

The Venue As previously mentioned, last year’s venue - the Ricoh Arena in Coventry - couldn’t have been any better. It was clean, modern, had great facilities and lots of massive car parks adjacent to the hall with great pedestrian access to the main doors. The new venue at Silverstone is also clean and modern, but that

is where the similarity ends. The Silverstone Wing, in its primary role as a centrepiece for major racing events, is superb. It has a massive paddock area, spacious garages, an awesome media centre (which looks a bit like NASA’s mission control building!) and good all round facilities. However, as an exhibition venue, it’s terrible. 26 www.cprmag.com

The first major issue is access. Visitors are directed to one of the main car parks on arrival, and once you have parked the car and got your ticket, you can pass through the gate into the circuit. Unfortunately, although the Silverstone Wing is right in front of you at this point, it is in fact on the infield side of the racing track, and the

nearest bridge is on the opposite side of the circuit. Consequently, visitors are loaded onto a mini-bus and driven around the outside of the circuit, across the bridge, and all the way back around to the Wing building. It takes about ten minutes by minibus, so walking is out of the question, unless you have a lot of time to spare! The


other downside to this transit system is that what ever you buy at the show has to be carried back on the mini-bus, so you have to keep that in mind if looking at any bulky or heavy purchases. Once inside the venue, the layout is rather unusual. Where as most exhibition halls are square or rectangular in shape, the ones in the

There are three halls in total being used by the MotorsportUK show, with a few additional exhibitors downstairs in the ‘Formula1’ garages. The narrow halls would be a nightmare if several thousand visitors arrived at the show, but thankfully the visitor

numbers seemed to be low again so it didn’t feel too claustrophobic.

what’s on offer? So, what exactly was on offer at Silverstone MotorsportUK? Well, most of the exhibitors were pitching products and services towards the lower end of the motorsport market and novice drivers in general. December 2012 27

perhaps the most impressive stand at the show was the one from the Monoposto Racing Club which features a selection of cars from the F3 Cup series. These impressive single seaters are probably as close as you’re going to get to the dizzy heights of Formula1 without the backing of a wealthy team or generous corporate sponsor. The F3 cars being displayed on the Monoposto club stand can be picked up for around £25,000 28 www.cprmag.com

and race applications for a year for the F3 Cup series come in at just under £3,000, so while it might not exactly be a cheap hobby, it is fairly inexpensive are far as motor racing goes. Of course, you still need to assemble (and pay!) some sort of pit crew/ race engineers, and then there is the cost of the tyres, spare parts, fuel, travel and accommodation costs for driver and crew, so those costs soon start to add up to

serious money! Another exhibitor offering new drivers the chance to get behind the wheel of a ‘proper’ racing cars was MCR Race Cars. Based in St Davids, Pembrokeshire, MCR builds race cars similar to those produced by Peterboroughbased Radical Sports Cars. The company offers ‘arrive and drive’ packages, as well as car sales for drivers who prefer to own and operate their own car. The car


itself features a box tubular space frame construction with integral safety cage and owners can choose between a Standard Sports 2000 Ford Duratec 2 litre fourcylinder engine producing rated at 200bhp or a Ford Duratec 2 litre Supercharged engine producing around 400bhp. The MCR S2 Sports 2000 Duratec car currently sells for £42,000 plus VAT so it certainly isn’t cheap, but it does allow drivers to build their skills on a genuine race car, and to be fair, the price is probably less than you would spend converting a road car to full race spec.

There should also have been a massive karting track set up in the paddock behind the ‘Wing’ building, where visitors could try their hand in some of the very latest karts, but I was told that the company that had been contracted to supply the safety barriers for the track went out of business just a few days before the show. It was a shame, because it would have added an interesting interactive element to the show, but despite the lack of karting, visitors could still get out on track. Over on Silverstone’s ‘Stowe Circuit’ there was a selection of performance cars in which visitors could take a drive with 30 www.cprmag.com

a qualified race instructor. Among the impressive machinery on offer was a Nissan GTR, a Ferrari F360 and an Aston Martin Vantage, so certainly no shortage of power. Unfortunately, to get over to Stowe, visitors had to catch one of the mini-buses running between the car park and the Wing, so access wasn’t as easy as it could have been. Back inside the garages, and one particular exhibit that caught my eye was a box trailer for transporting race cars. It had been built by Belfast-based Motor Sport Trailers Ltd and the thing that really appealed to me was its simplicity. Yes there

was space for a single car inside the trailer, but there was also fold down bunk beds and seats which could accommodate up to four people. At the far end of the trailer was also a kitchen area with a Webasto diesel hob, fridge and a sink. It is certainly a great accessory for a race weekend and means that you don’t have to tow your race car with one vehicle and a caravan with another.

the champions and up and coming drivers were Michael Meadows (Porsche Carrera Cup GB), Jack Goff (Clio Cup), James Walker (VW Racing Cup), Charlie Robertson (Ginetta Jr), Henry Gilbert (Mini Challenge) and British GT frontrunner Zoe Wenham, who finished second in the GT4 class. Joining them was Jamie Chadwick Fresh from winning the Ginetta Junior Scholarship 2013 showdown, and GT4 British GT class champion Jody Fannin. Overall, the Silverstone MotorsportUK show was a good attempt to provide a focal point for anyone starting out in motor racing, but the complexity of the venue and

years. They undoubtedly had teething troubles too, since it takes time and a lot of effort to build a show into a successful annual event, and with a little work, I have no doubt that Silverstone MotorsportUK will become every bit as successful. December 2012 31


Going Under cover

Following on from our Winter Storage article in the last issue, Hamilton Classics explain what’s currently available from the world of car covers and what is best for your car.

W

ith so many choices available to the owner it is difficult to know what type of cover offers the best protection for your car. Having spent over a quarter of a century working with cars and trying many different products over those years, and having made many mistakes, I felt it was time that I researched the subject more thoroughly to ensure that not only my collection of cars was best protected, but that I could also offer the best advice to those who asked me. I set about researching the science of covers, which was actually more interesting than you would think. Most of what 32 www.cprmag.com

follows is common sense, but it is amazing how often we can be blinkered to wanting something that actually is not what we really need. The information applies to the UK climate, which as we know is somewhat inclement,

quite often lacking in regular sunshine. Rain is common, as is wind, but snow is generally rare unless you live way up north. As a result, our cars suffer from a great deal of condensation, whether stored outside or inside in a non-

heated environment. So firstly, what properties should a cover have? Ideally, all of the following; good breathability No matter how waterproof or close fitting a cover is, moisture will still get

underneath it. Therefore breathability is the most important thing a cover should offer and this should ideally be offered through the whole cover, not just through a couple of vents. Be cautious of vented covers as they only

breathe in the area around the vent - so if the vents are on the roof, the headlights for instance will still be damp! Non-Scratch Ideally the cover should have a man made soft inner layer (natural fibres tend to absorb December 2012 33

Fully tailored covers are best used indoors. moisture). The cover will get blown around in the wind, so the inner lining must be completely non-abrasive or be so light as not to be an issue. However, covers should always be placed on clean bodywork. Non-Hygroscopic (Dampness/Condensation) These are materials that do not naturally absorb moisture from the atmosphere. Try and avoid 34 www.cprmag.com

cotton as it is hygroscopic and although it breathes and is soft it will feel damp unless used in a dry atmosphere. That means cotton and natural fibres are only suitable for dry, heated garages. Dust/Dirt Proof Covers need to be multilayer to achieve this, and have breathe holes in each layer that do not line up. Again,

avoid cotton. Although it breathes very well, the weave has a tendency to open letting dust through! Quality of Fit A cover should be the correct size for the car and have some means to keep it in place. It should stay off the floor to avoid collecting dirt, but also allow air to go underneath it. Air Circulation is vital to assist breathability, especially outdoors if the sun does not come out. Be careful with tailored (fitted) covers unless the car is to be stored in a heated, dry garage, or a predominantly dry climate (like South of France, Spain or California) as they sit too close to the body of the car to encourage efficient breathability!

If you like to use your car regularly then of the four available, the easiest to use have to be the two with the frames, as they do not need taking down every time you wish to take your car out. Out of those two, the one with the external frame (The CairO-Port) is the most sturdy in my opinion and is by far the easiest to erect – it also has the benefit of three fans (rather than two) blowing air along the length of the tent (rather than horizontally opposed on the sides at

one end), the middle one of which is specifically set low to blow under the car to ensure all that cannot be seen is guaranteed good air movement. So to summarise, don’t waste your money on fully tailored covers that, even though on the whole are very well made,

since they could potentially be detrimental to your car in this climate. They are best saved for use in a dry environment. In the same vane try and avoid the cheap “one size fits all” covers which are generally bad for all the opposite reasons. Clean your car thoroughly

before covering it and finally, if it is being kept outdoors and it snows, be prepared to brush the snow off as soon as it starts to thaw, because it doesn’t matter how good the cover is, moisture will get trapped beneath it for the duration the snow is lying on top of it!

Genius doesn’t even begin to cut it! But sitting there right in the middle of that miraculous picture is usually a tatty tin rocker box...and it does kinda spoil overall effect. However, those awfully nice chaps at Mini Spares are now offering this super-blingy alloy rocker cover which will brighten up any tired looking engine bay. It will also (it says here!) cool the engine oil as it splashes the inside and will dampen engine noise due to it’s thicker walls. Retailing at just £27.24 inc VAT, it is one of the cheaper ways to transform the look under your bonnet. The rocker box will also fit most other A-Series engines such as those in the MG Midget and Austin Healey Sprite.

Race Spec MGB ‘Banjo’ Axle Available from: Cambridge Motorsport Parts Price: £1,200 plus VAT See: www.cambridgemotorsport.com Early MGB models (up to 1965) used a ‘Banjo’ type rear axle, whereas later examples had a ‘Salisbury’ type axle. Whilst the Banjo axle was adequate for road use, it wasn’t quite strong enough to cope with the rigours of racing and broken half-shafts were common. The later Salisbury axle was much stronger, having been designed for the 6-cylinder MGC, and later five bearing MGB’s and also the MGBGTV8. Cambridge Motorsport Parts can now offer a race-spec banjo axle casing for early MGB models. It has been specially modified to incorporate the later half-shafts, back plates and brake drums making it a direct fit on early MGBs. With these improvements the axle can be used in competition without the fear of half-shafts breaking. The modified part also benefits from the better oil seal arrangement on the later axles. The Footman James

Held at the NEC, Birmingham, on November 16-18, the Footman James Classic Motor Show marked the close of another great classic car season. Simon Hazeldine went along to see what was on offer.

F

or nearly as long as I can remember, the Footman James Classic Motor Show, held annually at the NEC, Birmingham, has been the biggest classic car show in the UK - period. Nothing even comes close to the sheer scale of this event. Each year I look forward to this particular show, but at the same time I dread spending three whole days at the NEC as it seems to drain every ounce of energy and enthusiasm from your body. Yep, which ever way you slice it and dice it, this is a big show, so when the preevent press releases landed in my inbox for this year’s offering, proclaiming it to be “the biggest show yet” with the addition of an extra four halls giving 12,000 square metres more display

space. The layout was going to change too. Traditionally, the CMS was located in Halls 2-5 over on the western side of the complex, with the ‘Top Gear Live’ show filling the adjoining Hall 1. This year however, Clarkson and Co opted to go it alone and moved their shows to new dates, and the CMS relocated to the eastern side of the NEC to occupy Halls 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 and 20. If you are familiar

with the Autosport International Show held each January, you will be familiar with this new layout, with all the halls inter-connecting in a sort of ‘C’ shaped pattern. Now I am one of these people who like familiarity. I don’t

adjust well to change. I am also a great believer in the old adage of ‘if it aint broke...don’t fix it,’ so with the CMS using a tried and tested successful formula for so many years, did it really need to move? Surely if more space was needed it could simply take over the vacant Hall 1 which was no longer being used by Top Gear? As I set off on my annual journey down the M6, for once I wasn’t sure what exactly was waiting for me at the other end.

Fleeced! On arrival at the NEC complex, the signposts pointed to the infamous North Car Parks, and sure enough I was directed to North 10B which was ankle deep in mud in some places. I never thought I’d miss the East car parks! I headed to the kiosk and paid for my car park ticket

Not exactly a classic car, but Jenson Button’s 2011 McLaren MP4-26 F1 car attracted a lot of attention. - £10.00. Yep, a tenner just to park the car for a few hours; crazy huh? Muddy and feeling rather fleeced, I hopped on the bus which took me from the car park and obligingly dropped me at the main door. I made my way to Hall 17 which, going by a quick glance at the show guide, seemed like the logical place to start.

The autojumble area was busy throughout the show.

Clubs & Trade As it turned out, this hall housed the numerous ‘autojumble’ stalls along with some of the larger club stands. Among these were the stands from the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain, The British Mini Club, and about ten different stands catering for a range of Austin clubs, the biggest of which was that of the Pre-War Austin Seven Club.

Hall 18 was fairly similar housing the ‘Trade Village’ and more car clubs, with the Morris Minor Owners’ Club putting on a particularly good display. Hall 19 also followed the same format with a number of stands selling

parts and tools surrounding the ever popular restoration theatre. The theatre gives visitors a chance to see experts carrying out various restoration tasks, such as panel-beating and welding, with a running

in previous years so I know it is not always like this, but perhaps the team should work in overlapping shifts to eliminate any long breaks. Also in Hall 19 were most of the Ford club stands, with eyecatching displays from the Ford Cortina MkII & 1600E Owners’

Entering Hall 20 I sensed a definite increase in ‘bling.’ Where the previous halls catered for typical club classics and restoration themes, this hall seemed to contain a vast assortment of shiny sportscars with immaculate Jaguars and Aston Martins adorning many of the stands. The two main Jaguar clubs (the Jaguar Drivers’ Club and Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club) were also in residence in this hall, with only a strategically placed Jaguar parts stand to keep them apart. Over in the far corner of the same hall was the 289 Register’s stand which featured a stunning selection of Cobras. One of the cars that caught my attention was Steve Volk’s amazing 1964 Cobra 289 FIA Roadster that was


built to compete in the 1964 FIA Manufacturers’ Championship series. The car is one of just five FIA Roadsters produced and was once raced at Brands Hatch by none other than Roy Salvadori. The car is exceptionally original and has never been restored, with the owner saying that it still looks just as it did in its final race in 1965 at the Rossfield Mountain Hillclimb.

Motorbikes...eh?

The next hall proved to be something of a contentious issue as Hall 6 housed the Classic Motorbike Show. Yep, for some insane reason, somebody thought that it would be a good idea to place the bike show right in the middle of the car show, effectively splitting the car show into two halves. Visitors to the CMS were forced to walk through the bike show to get to the rest of the halls and just to make things even more ridiculous, you could only get into the hall via small gateways on each side of

Wheeler Dealers Hall 7 was a hive of activity and noise as it was home to the Wheeler Dealer Live Stage where TV’s favourite ‘petrolheads’ Mike Brewer and Edd China were strutting their stuff in front of an enthusiastic audience. As in previous years, Edd was challenged to ‘restore’ a classic at the show over the course of the weekend, and this year’s challenge for Mr China was to build, or reassemble to be more accurate, a 1960 Morris Minor Pick Up. The lively duo is certainly one of the more watchable pairings on television at the moment, with the pumped up Brewer, seemingly fuelled by an entire crate of Red Bull, contrasting brilliantly with his rather more reserved side-kick Edd China. The pair also handed out freebies to the audience and interviewed a number of motoring celebrities including Sir Stirling Moss, TT Rider Guy Martin, Red Dwarf star Chris Barrie, and former Top Gear presenter Quentin Wilson. Other stars seem roaming the halls were comedian Steve Coogan, Emmerdale actress Natalie J Robb, and Dragon’s Den star Theo Paphitis.

Rover Clubs

I can only assume that this was some bizarre attempt to bump up the number of ‘visitors’ to the bike show, and if it was, it didn’t work as the car people just walked straight through the hall

and out the other side. Why not just leave the bike show in one of the halls at the end and keep the car show together? Thankfully it was just a minor irritant, but I did hear a number of people saying how ridiculous it seemed.

Sharing Hall 7 with the Live Stage were several stands hosting mainly Rover and Triumph clubs, while across in Hall 8 were more Triumph clubs, more Rover clubs and the MG Owners’ Club and MG Car Club. Looking at all the club stands, it did seem odd how each individual model of Rover seemed to have its own club. There was the Rover Coupe Owners’ Club, the Rover 200 & 400 Owners’

Club, the Rover Sports Register, the Rover P4 Drivers’ Guild, the Rover P5 Club and the Rover P6 Club. Each one is undoubtedly professionally run and provide a great service to their members, but just imagine how big the club would be if all the individual clubs banded together as one to form a single Rover owners’ club. Makes you think eh? Hall 9 featured copious

amounts of polished metalwork and much of it was for sale on the Silverstone Auctions sale ground. There were some stunning cars being offered for sale in the auction which was held on the Saturday afternoon, but the two undoubted stars were the rare 2004 Ferrari Enzo with just 7,500 miles on the clock and current British Prime Minister David Cameron’s ex-Fiat 500. The Ferrari failed to attract

a suitably high bid to part it from its present owner, but the little Fiat sold for more than double its estimate at £18,480. The Meguiar’s Club Showcase which acts as the show’s main concours competition - once again featured some simply amazing cars, which were just as notable for their variety as their quality. Rubbing shoulders with the Ferrari 250GT SWB and Jaguar E-Type were more

So this is what a ‘Sporting Bear’ looks like! humble offerings such as a VW Beetle, an Austin Mini and a MkII Ford Capri. Proving that you don’t need to have a ridiculously rare or expensive car to win such a prestigious competition, the eventual winner of the Meguiar’s Club Showcase final was the 1962 Volkswagen Beetle 1200 Deluxe owned by Wayne McCarthy from Ireland. It was a close run thing though as only five points separated the top four entries, proving just how tough this contest really is. Hall 10 featured more club stands with offerings from the Ginetta Owners’ Club, Historic Sports Car Club and the Alfa Romeo Owners’ Club, while hushed tones and funny handshakes denoted the Masonic Classic Vehicle Club. There was also some very impressive machinery over on the GT40 Enthusiasts’ Club stand, while a one particular Pantera GT55 on the DeTomaso Drivers’ Club stand

featured a fully chromed engine block and gearbox housing. Moving on to the last two halls and Hall 11 contained Singers, Sunbeams and Volvos, while one corner had an Italian flavour with its Fiat and Lancia clubs. This hall also hosted a wonderful selection of ex-Police cars on the Police Vintage Enthusiasts’ Club stand, while some impressive combat machines were showcased on the Military Vehicle Trust’s stand.

American Classics Over in Hall 12 was a wonderful assortment of American classics, including just about every variant of Mustang and Corvette mixed in with Dodge Chargers, Chevy ‘pick-ups’ and custom-built ‘Hot Rods.’ One of the first cars to catch my attention in this hall was a 1931 Cadillac Roadster Golfer’s Coupe which once belonged to flamboyant entertainer

Liberace. The whole car had been hand-gilded in 28 carat gold leaf, and while that might not be everybody’s cup of tea, it certainly made it stand out.

Dream Rides One thing that was really noticeable in Hall 12 was the distinct smell of high octane exhaust fumes combined with the roar of high performance engines. It could mean only one thing - the Sporting Bears. Yep, once again the ‘bears’ were in town and had brought along a stunning selection of very desirable cars in which visitors could ride. The ‘Dream Rides’ was conceived to help raise money for charity and the idea is incredibly simple. The Bear’s members bring along their cars to the show, and in exchange for a charitable donation, visitors car take a ride in any car they like. Generally, the rarest and fastest cars command a higher price,

Up until just before the CMS, the Bears had raised just under a million pounds with the Dream Rides, and if all went to plan, the club would reach the magic £1million mark at some point during the weekend. The Bears reached the million pound target after receiving a £20 donation for a ride in a Bristol from dream ride regular, Colin Padley from Dagenham. From small donations over the years Colin has donated £1,000, so it is fitting that he won the ride around Silverstone in a Ferrari Enzo. As usual, the Classic Motor Show provided a massive number of cars to look at and there were lots of opportunities to lighten your wallet too. If I’m honest, I

wasn’t keen on the new layout though. I much preferred the randomness of the old format, where you never quite knew what was around the next corner. The new arrangement, especially with the bike show slapped in the middle, just seemed a bit disjointed. Speaking after the event, Show Manager Andy Rouse said: “We are totally blown away by the number of visitors for this year. It’s exceeded all our expectations and reflects the growth and strength of the classic motoring

movement. Feedback from the clubs, traders and visitors has been fantastic. The new layout worked well and we’ll use any feedback to develop the show for 2013. With a show of this scale and with the number of visitors attending, its always our priority to improve the way visitors can move around the show to enjoy all the exhibits.” Next year’s show is being held at the same venue on November 15-17, so if you missed this year’s offering, why not pencil it in your diary now so you don’t forget.

RM Auctions’ annual Battersea sale generated an incredible £14,266,030 in sales with an impressive 84 percent of total lots sold before a packed house in central London on October 31. The top performer of the evening sale was the simply beautiful and extraordinarily rare 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta ‘Tour de France’, which attracted spirited bidding from eager collectors, selling eventually for a strong £1,960,000. Proving that Italian exotics still reign supreme in the desirability stakes, the gorgeous 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS Testa Fissa, driven to Tourist Trophy glory by the great Tazio Nuvolari, sold for £784,000 to secure the position as the night’s second biggest seller. The British cars stole their share of the limelight too, with Aston Martins continuing to shine in the market. Headlining the group of 11 Astons on offer was an elegant 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible, which achieved a highly impressive £632,800 to round out the night’s top three sales. Other top performers included the beautiful, original 1937 Bugatti Type 57C Stelvio Cabriolet for £616,000, while a Bugatti of an altogether more modern era, an awesome 2008 Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 from the 62 www.cprmag.com

The much admired, exBritish Motor Show 1952 Bentley Continental R-Type Fastback Sports Saloon, one of the ultimate post-war grand touring cars, also garnered significant attention from collectors, realizing £532,000. One lot attracting significant presale interest was the wonderful and historically significant 1964 Aston Martin DB5, delivered new to Beatles member Sir Paul McCartney and owned by him for some six years. Presented in fabulous, restored condition, the car achieved £344,400, reinforcing its significance to collectors and the enduring appeal of Beatles-related provenance. The Porsche brand also demonstrated that collectors are eager to buy the best of the breed. A 1996 Porsche 911 GT2, just two owners from new, far exceeded its pre-sale estimate, selling for a remarkable £324,880, while the slightly older but equally rare

Ex-Schumacher 1998 Ferrari F1 car made £400,000.

1988 Porsche 959 ‘Komfort’ also exceeded its pre-sale estimate, realizing a strong £308,000. Proving that not all post-war Italian exotics need a prancing horse to be highly desirable, the 1973 Lancia Stratos ‘Stradale’, one of the first of its kind built, sold for an impressive £249,200 against a pre-sale high estimate of £190,000.

After a its first successful sale at last year’s Footman James Classic Motor Show, Silverstone Auction once again returned to the NEC in Birmingham for what promised to be a very exciting sale. The two star lots both originated from Italy, although that is where the similarity ends as two more different cars would be harder to find! The first was a tiny 1971 Fiat 500 that once belonged to current UK Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha. The car has covered what is believed to be a genuine 13,000 64 CPR Magazine

miles from new and was restored to its standard specification by the vendor in 2010. It was bought as a surprise birthday present for Mr Cameron’s wife and they covered approximately 1,000 miles in their ten years of ownership. The little Fiat was expected to sell for around £9,000, but the hammer eventually fell at an amazing £18,480. The other Italian icon didn’t fare quite as well. It was a 2004 Ferrari Enzo with just 7,500 miles on the clock. Despite some initial interest, bidding eventually stalled and failed meet the £650,000 mark. There was also a very attractive Triumph TR4 in the sale - a car which also has a dash of Italian flair. Yes, it’s a British sportscar, but it was designed by Michelotti! The car in question had been fully restored to a very high standard and was closer to original condition that two other TR4s that sold for big money (both around £35,000+) over the past 18 months. Strange then that this car sold for a lower figure of £26,320 - still a very respectable price, but well off what

previous sales suggested. Other highlights in this well attended sale included a matching numbers 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Series II ‘Jet Black’ car which sold for £224,000, and a Ford RS200 rally car with just 1,066 miles on the clock went for £103,040. Approximately 65% of the available lots were sold during the auction although it was clear that many owners were not going to let their cars go for bargain prices and were prepared to wait for a better offer.

This tidy MGA Roadster also failed to find a new owner.

Brooklands - The Birthplace of British Motorsport is a comprehensive look back at the history of the first ever purpose-built race track and some of the cars and races that took place there. Back in 1907 when the first foundations were laid at the site of the new circuit, the motor car was still very much in its infancy. British roads had a speed limit of just 20mph, yet the new Brooklands track was designed to cope with speeds of up to 120mph! Great automotive names like Bentley, Napier, Railton, Delage, Talbot and Sunbeam were almost eclipsed by the daring exploits of the drivers who displayed huge amounts of bravery, or perhaps ignorance, to the dangers of racing very unsafe cars. There were no cockpit walls, no roll-over bars or hoops, no fireproof overalls or any other safety equipment for that matter. Just a leather helmet and some goggles between the driver and the Brooklands concrete. Needless to say, there were many accidents at the circuit with a total of 17 fatalities, and if you believe the stories, some of these ghostly drivers still roam the circuit today. This DVD however contains some wonderful black & white footage of a truly fascinating era at one of motorsports’ most iconic tracks. It tells the story of how the World’s Land Speed record was smashed no fewer than three times, and how 100 miles was covered in one hour for the first time ever at the track. The film also looks at the inaugural British Grand Prix, and shows footage shot around the paddock and racing club whose slogan was ‘The Right Crowd and No

Crowding’. Brooklands became as much a part of the English social scene as Ascot, Henley or Derby Day at Epsom. Some of the film features silent footage, particularly Percy Lambert’s 100mph record setting run in 1913 and the rare home movie footage showing the building and record runs of John Cobb’s Outer Circuit record holding car, the Napier Railton, perhaps the most famous of Brooklands cars. This DVD makes great viewing, even if you do find yourself wincing as the out of balance cars wobbles precariously through the bends. Highly recommended.

Three championships for someone his age, I don’t think that’s been done before. And he’s got a long way to go, for sure.” The final race in Brazil saw Lewis Hamilton leading his last drive for McLaren before retiring after a clash with Nico Hulkenberg. Hamilton’s move to Mercedes for 2013 was a key part of the Round Table discussion. Martin Brundle said: “I would have recommended that he signed a short-term deal with McLaren, and waited to see if Mercedes get their act together or not. He’s already writing off 2013, which I find quite strange.” The retirement of Michael Schumacher was also a hot topic for the Round Table, which included Christian Horner, Team Principal of Red Bull Racing. He said: “In many respects, there have been two careers for Michael Schumacher. In the pre-comeback one, he dominated and broke all the records, and I think in many ways it’s a bit of a shame he did return, because he has diluted the myth that was Michael Schumacher, and people have seen that he’s been totally beatable.” Ecclestone also offered his opinion on Schumacher’s retirement, and said: “I’m pleased that Michael has stopped – I said to him the other day that I wished he had stopped before. But I don’t think he’s damaged his reputation. People remember Fangio, and they will always remember Michael.
