Lining them up at a bar where every cocktail delivers a punch worth paying for

cocktail maker of the year with his inventive ‘cucumber yum-yum’. On a gin base, raspberries, honey and aquavit are shaken not stirred to produce an agreeably unmarked and fun flavour. The freshness of the cucumber works well with the stiffness of the gin – a winning combo that took flight with the masses as cucumber became the trendiest new ingredient in 2009. Come 2011 and Rehal went on to win yet again with another wild infusion. ‘Snap fever’ is a cocktail made with gin, honey, lime juice and you guessed it – snap peas. This has a surprisingly strong pea flavour – not enough that it scares you, but enough that you comment on it, savour it, and are left wondering how something so odd could mix so well. Rehal is well aware it’s a fine balance. “When designing a cocktail it has to be out-of-the box, but if it’s too weird it’ll be rejected, so you have to keep the comfort factor in it,” he says. As well as the award winners, 1105 stocks a seasonal menu that changes every three months, a classic cocktail menu and

of course all your usual spirits, wines and beers – albeit the classiest brands. Each cocktail contains at least 60 millilitres of alcohol, but for 120 kroner a cocktail you’d expect nothing less. While the office crowd frequents 1105 on weekdays, Friday and Saturday night sees a slightly younger crowd as a live DJ plays along while you sip your quirky creations. You may even catch a glimpse of a celebrity – many of whom have made this place their local. So, as you sit at the bar sucking on a liquorice pipe that came on top of the cocktail Rehal has just served, the worries of your hard working day fade away. You realise that three-hour meeting was actually quite productive, you conclude your secretary has piled on a few pounds lately and probably wasn’t worth the effort, and that your client’s now unusable alibi will probably mean he lands in prison – which he deserves anyway. Ah, it’s wondrous what 1105 can do. EMILY MCLEAN

Theatre Zeppelin, Valdemarsgade 15, Cph V; ends Nov 29, performances Sun 13:00, Tue & Thu 09:30 & 12:00, Wed 10:00, Fri: 10:00; Tickets: 35165kr; www.zeppelin.dk Proving that HC Andersen’s stories are just as much of a hit today as they were long ago, The Snow Queen is an adventurous journey of evolution. Set at a hotel far away from civilisation, the story follows two friends, Kay and Gerda, who are suddenly delivered a magic mirror – with no idea where it came from. The mirror turns out to be a gateway to another world – the Snow Queen’s icy universe – where all your innermost dreams and wishes come true … but for a price. Visually stunning, the set boasts a raw and rusty icy hotel by innovative, award-winning designer Joanni Eggert. The Snow Queen is a fantastic dramatisation sure to warm up kids’ imaginations. EM

Blå records Blågårdsgade 2A, Cph N; open Mon-Fri 12:00–18:00, Sat 12:0016:00; prices from 10kr Backtrack a bit to this small underground basement shop. Blå (Blue) Records boasts a ‘hyggeligt’ atmosphere that doesn’t lack diversity in what it has to offer. For those perhaps looking for a unique gift or are record junkies themselves, they can find both new and used vinyl albums here, ranging from traditional music to electronic, blues, pop, rock and basically every other genre you can imagine. Despite the reasonable prices, the best part is actually that the small shop hosts record swaps every once in a while. (Look them up on Facebook for more details.)

PICTURE THIS: you’re a 30-something legal eagle, you’re working for Copenhagen’s biggest law firm, and you’ve just had one hell of a day. The meeting that was meant to last one hour lasted three, the secretary you’ve been trying to score for two months just got a new boyfriend, and your client’s decided his alibi isn’t quite as watertight as he thought. The end of the day finally comes … it’s 9pm. You need a drink. A stiff one. And you need it in a relaxed yet sophisticated bar. You need 1105. Proving hard to find for first-timers, this little gem knows its value and isn’t interested in bolshie advertising, or large signage. Word of mouth is enough for this place. A sign simply saying 1105 sits above a large black door and what lies behind it is something quite spectacular. Walking into this dimly lit, minimalistic cocktail bar reminds you of walking into some sort of laboratory. Three time award-winning bartender Hardeep Rehal stands behind the bar looking extremely ‘gammel-klog’ in his white laboratory coat, mixing, testing and tasting – the only sign that would lead you to believe he’s a bartender is his bowtie. As soon as you take a seat at the bar, you know that bad day in the office can only get better. Surrounded by fellow young professionals, blending into an international crowd, you know you’re in good company. Opening the menu it’s hard to believe these drinks weren’t concocted in a laboratory – you’d need to have a little mad scientist in you to mix snap peas, cucumber and liquorice pipes in cocktails. The experimental attitude of 1105 is paying off. In 2009 Rehal won Danish
