Could you brief us about the overall business activities of your company (tie-ups/JVs, acquisitions, associations, reach, network)? What has your company always been striving for?

Chembond Chemicals Limited (BSE: CHEMBOND) is a 40 year old diversified specialty chemicals manufacturing company. Our presence through the various product lines allows us to serve industries across most segments of manufacturing in India.

We have a strong presence in the industrial water and waste water treatment sector where we offer chemical, equipment and bio-remediation solutions. We treat cooling water, boiler water, raw water and effluent and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes amongst other applications to enhance the plant performance. These products are used in large and heavy industries like steel, power, refining, fertilizer, paper, chemicals and petrochemicals as well as in the food, pharmaceuticals, beverage, cement, institutional and small industrial

segments. The water treatment chemicals business is undertaken by Chembond Solenis Water Technologies – our Joint Venture with Solenis Inc, USA. Our construction chemicals are used in the building and construction industry with applications in roads and bridges, airports and metro transit, infrastructure building, in industrial, commercial and residential construction and repair and rehab projects.

Chembond coatings products are high performance coatings for structural protection against corrosion, for floors and walls in clean rooms and shop floors and for building exteriors.

A growth business for Chembond is animal nutrition business, which manufactures and supplies high quality enzymes and other products for the poultry industry.

What is the sole purpose of Chembond Chemicals Ltd acquiring or going in for joint ventures? How does this add to the image and value of Chembond Chemicals? Are we going to see many more such acquisitions/JVs in the near future?

We do not start with an objective to form a JV or make acquisitions for image or for the sake of it. We consider the synergies, the vision and values of the partner organization, the shareholder value that can be created through a catalytic partnership through faster growth or faster access or expansion in our product offerings. As a result, Chembond’s JV’s have brought in advanced technologies as a first mover to the benefit of our customers and have set new standards for product performance and service delivery in the country. Of course our business have grown much faster.

While Chembond exited a JV with Henkel KGaA in the metal pre-treatment field very recently, it also entered a new business segment in a JV with Calvatis GmbH, a German industrial cleaning and hygiene chemicals solutions provider. Chembond Calvatis Industrial Hygiene Systems Ltd would serve the dairy, beverage, brewing and food processing industries in the region.

We are looking out for more acquisition / partnerships which are synergistic to the nature of our business.

Which are some of your pioneering products recently introduced in the market or are there any plans to launch new products?

Research and Development in Biotechnology has resulted in the streamlining of the manufacturing of several industrial enzymes and probiotics.

Similar initiatives in the polymer arena have resulted in the successful development of bio-based polyamides and acrylic emulsions. These activities have resulted in our Company being recognized as an innovative company, a self-sufficient company with a differentiated strategy.

and general industrial segments. These products are water-based and contain minimal amounts of co-solvents.

Theoretical emissions of these products are less than 0.10 gram per square meter per 1 micron thickness. Therefore, it is the most environmentally sound product in the market. These products do not contain hazardous substances like solvents, lead, and chrome and are compatible with substances like cast iron, alloys, aluminum, plastics and rubber. The product is characterized by fast drying, gloss, easy application that is similar to those of traditional solvent-based enamels.

In polymers, we have discovered a unique adhesion promoter for improvement in adhesion properties of plastic surface and also submitted provisional Indian Patent application this year. Chembond actively participated in the Innovation Pavilion at PLASTINDIA 2015.

Brief us about the quality policy for your business?

We are a performance chemicals manufacturer. Everyone at Chembond is conscious of this fact and knows that superior product quality, timely technical service and customer satisfaction are the backbone of our business. We are committed to absorbing knowledge to incorporate improvements on a continuous basis consistent with global trends.

In order to realise our goal of being a “Supplier of Choice” we consider our customers as partners and work towards achieving the common objectives of higher quality, better value for money and a friendlier environment.

What is the strategy adopted to improve your company’s position in Indian and global market as well?

We do not believe in doing anything “fancy” we would stick to what has been successful for us and what has served our customers well. We would not sacrifice our values to gain business or improve our market position in any of our businesses.

We are also more focussed on serving the India market and consolidating our position

here. Acquisitions and partnerships are surely on our agenda.

What is your current physical and human resource infrastructure to meet the mission and vision of your company?

That is a very pertinent question. We have been thinking and providing for growth several years ahead of the time when the physical and human assets fall short or become an impediment for our growth.

Way back in 1997 we decided to shift our office and laboratory from a small setup in Lower Parel to our independent building at Mahape, Navi Mumbai. Chembond Centre houses all our personnel operating from the Mumbai area. Also housed are laboratories for all our product applications and for R&D. This large facility enables our teams to work as one. Similarly we have regional manufacturing footprint with ISO 9001 certified manufacturing plants and laboratories in Tarapur, Maharashtra; Baddi, Himachal Pradesh; Dudhwada, Gujarat; Mahape, Maharashtra and at Ranipet, Tamil Nadu.

On the human assets front, we have a continuous recruitment and training and development program, which keeps pace with our business development.

What are the current challenges faced

by Chembond Chemicals in India and what is the way forward according to you?

The Indian economy has passed through a low growth cycle over the last few years. New investments have slowed to a trickle and recent initiatives taken by the government are likely to take another couple of years till they result in enhanced opportunities for Chembond.

We have nevertheless continued to make investments in facilities, people, technology and brands because the Indian market has a tremendous scope for the kinds of businesses in which we operate.

Our challenge is in maintaining margins at times like these when the industry is still tentative about the recovery from a slowdown. It is also challenging to maintain expenses while people’s aspirations are ever-growing.

Why did Chembond Chemicals divest 49% shares in Henkel’s Germany?

Our company started its operations 40 years ago with metal pre-treatment chemicals. We were pioneers of the business in India and were building up references and experience. Post liberalization in the mid 1990’s several international car manufacturers and appliance companies set up plants here.

New product technologies were being used in Europe and the USA. That is when Henkel wanted to enter India and be a part of the market. Chembond was already a significant player then and wanted to be an innovator always. A decision was taken to form a JV that can make use of Chembond’s local experience, sales and distribution, manufacturing and technical support infrastructure while using Henkel’s global experience, newer product technologies and vast pool of international experts to significantly change the growth trajectory from the resultant synergies.

This JV was very successful and both partners equally contributed to its success. As is the case with almost all globally operating companies today, the management teams change and are under pressure to deliver superior performances to their stakeholders. The company here

was well structured, independent and had an excellent performance track record with customers and financially too.

Henkel expressed a desire to buy the 49% stake from Chembond. Not wanting the successful partnership to get acrimonious and erode value and after great thought we decided to exit the business and spend more time driving the other business that had been continuously added to Chembond’s “portfolio”.

How do you intend taking CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) to the next level of PSR (Personal Social Responsibility)?

For 17 years now, the Chembond group along with its joint venture partner Henkel runs a non-formal educational Centre near Tarapur where English, Hindi, Marathi, Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and General Knowledge form the main subjects of curriculum. Group discussions and sessions with the community and parents help children understand issues like their rights and duties for education better. This Centre organizes periodic health check-up by doctors and the children are provided with supplementary nutrition to help them cope with the problem of malnutrition in order to enjoy

them a good health. Children under the project are being trained on vital aspects of personality development like behaviour and etiquette, hygiene, health, values and habits, social concerns. They are also being given training on art, craft, dance and drama through workshops and cultural programs.

The Centre also provides financial assistance to weaker sections in order to complete their formal education.

A new Centre was started at Shirgoan in November 2012. This is a remote area and most of the families belong to site workers who are paid on daily basis and due to nature of work, the children cannot get opportunity to get proper education.

The Centre took an initiative to offer assistance to girls from Balwadi (Junior KG) to 5 th Standard. This Centre too runs a karate class for girls to improve their self-confidence.

Visan Rachna Kendra at Piplaj, Gujarat was started in 2010 to impart training in handicrafts to the financially weaker women of the village. The Kendra is where they make products using the handicraft skills. Refrigerant transfer is one of the important and critical applications in the process industries, where canned motor pump is used to handle liquid refrigerant (mainly ammonia). Ammonia is natural, most efficient and cost-effective industrial refrigerant as it does not destroy atmospheric ozone and does not contribute to the greenhouse effect linked to global warming.

Circulating refrigerant enters the compressor and is compressed to a higher pressure resulting in a higher temperature as well. The hot compressed vapour is then routed through a condenser where it is cooled and condensed into a liquid. This liquid refrigerant then passes through an expansion valve where it undergoes an abrupt reduction in pressure. That pressure reduction results in auto-refrigeration effect of the adiabatic flash evaporation lowers the temperature of the liquid and then it is routed through the coil or tubes in the evaporator. A fan circulates the warm air in the endosed space across the coil or tubes, which evaporates the liquid part of the cold refrigerant mixture. At the same time, the circulating air is cooled and thus lowers the temperature of the endosed space to the desired temperature. Major application areas of canned pump in refrigeration include meat processing, agriculture produce, fishery industries, ice making plant, etc.

Welded tubes making operation are carried out on the tube mill. Cold/hot stainless steel strips are slitted to the required width as per the diameter of tube to be formed. The strips are then fed to the uncoilar from where it passes through series of rollers and continuously formed into a tubular shape and welded by tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. It is highly precision complete automated process where the edge of script are treated and fused together under protect in atmosphere of argon gas through a non-consumable electrode without using any filler metal. The tubes also pass through a series of sizes rolls to ensure quality, tolerance and then are cut to length. It is then annealed, straightened, hydro-tested, pickled and passivated. The tubes then undergo a 100 per cent visual and dimensional inspection. Then the tubes are marked and suitably packed before dispatch.

DUPLEX VACUUM PLODDER The modern Toilet Soap manufacturing facilities uses a duplex vacuum plodder for final refining, compacting and air free extrusion of a continuous bar. Duplex vacuum plodder consists of two plodders mounted in tandem and connected by a vacuum chamber. Their preliminary stage serves for the final refining of the product through refining screens of various mesh and forces the soap mass through a perforated disc transforming the mass into noodles in any length and thickness. WFI UNIT REDUCES ENERGY CONSUMPTION In all pharma and biopharma manufacturing operations, product quality and patient safety come first. This is also true for high purity media, such as WFI. WIRE HARNESS ENGINEERING Version 2.5 of Eplan Harness proD focuses on optimising user workflows and the coupling of the 3D wire harness engineering system to the Eplan Platform’s central parts management. Users then have only one central parts management system which they are able to access over the entire course of a project. This significantly reduces the effort in maintaining master databases and enables continuous workflows from schematics through to production documentation. Master data workflows have been further optimised through the derivation of 2D symbols from existing 3D data. Version 2.5 aims to provide a user-friendly 3D system for wire harness design. Silicone rubber is a perfect choice for medical, pharma and food processing industries. Silicone has comparatively low mechanical properties, tensile strength, elongation and tear strength; however, they keep constant even at high temperatures but should not be used for high temperature steam. Its resistance to oil and hydrocarbon is fairly limited and similar to that of chloroprene rubbers. Reasonable resistance to a whole range of general chemicals but acids, alkalis, esters and kerosene should be avoided. Silicone has excellent resistance to heat up to 220 oC intermittent. CORROSION-RESISTANT BEACON, HORN & COMBINATION UNITS R STAHL’s new Yodalex Super Series comprises a suite of signalling devices designed for use in hazardous areas and harsh environments. Electrostatic Explosion Hazard for Ignition-Sensitive Dusts Electrostatic sparks occur in various operations in powder manufacturing industries. There exists probability of explosion originating from electrostatic spark ignition if discharge energy of spark exceeds minimum ignition energy (MIE) of dust-air cloud. This paper analyses this hazard for dusts having MIEď‚Ł5 mJ. MIEs of some selected ignition-sensitive dusts were determined with Vertical Glass Tube Apparatus using a capacitive discharge circuit. Risk assessment of industries handling such dusts needs consideration of small plant-items (very low capacitance or larger capacitance/ small voltage) which may lead to hazardous situations due to electrostatic spark discharges.

he knowledge of ignition behaviour of dust-air mixtures due to electrical sparks is important for explosion risk assessment in chemical industries to decide extent and cost of explosion safety measures. Most industrial operations producing dusts, eg, sieving, pouring, conveying and grinding, result in build-up of static charges and dust explosions occur whenever an object (non-earthed electrically conducting) is charged to a high voltage and discharges its energy to earth via an air gap. Ignition sensitivity of dust-air mixture depends on particle size, moisture content and chemical composition of dust. The probability of explosion originating from electrostatic spark ignition is always there if discharge energy of spark is greater than minimum ignition energy (MIE) of dustair cloud. The present study is aimed at analysis of electrostatic ignition hazard and safety for dusts/powders with high ignition sensitivity and very low MIE.

when energy released is equal to or greater than MIE of a dust-air mixture defined as minimum spark energy needed to ignite an optimum concentration of dust using a capacitive spark. Energy released and incendivity depends on type of discharge controlled by electrical properties of installations and products, geometrical layout of plant-unit, operation, etc - spark discharge (<1 J), conical pile discharge (<1 J), brush discharge (<3 mJ); propagating brush discharge (<10 J) (1).

Dust

Sparks from isolated conductors are most incendive discharges and it is essential to avoid this form of accumulation by earthing/bonding of conductors. A high resistivity material solid object can be considered capable of accumulating electrostatic charge if the earthing resistance at some points exceeds ~10 6 -10 8 ohm (2) . This threshold exceeds for insulating material objects. Stored conducting powders can be treated in a similar manner to metal plant. The

human body is charged due to movement or by coming in contact with or being near a charged object. If a charged insulator is backed by a conductor, more charge can be stored as such a system forms a capacitor. A discharge obtained under such circumstances is an intense and highly energetic propagating brush spark discharge. Stored high resistivity powders inhibit migration of charge and tend to give brush type discharge.

Figure 1 shows proposed safety measures.

MIE for most of the dusts is >5 mJ and in practice large and medium size plant items are considered in analyzing explosion risk ignoring the risk arising due to presence of small plant items liable to lead to low energy discharges and dangerous for low MIE dusts.

Experimental Work-Determination of MIEs of Some Ignition-Sensitive Dusts MIE of dusts was measured in 1.2-L Vertical Glass Tube Apparatus (similar to Hartmann Apparatus (1) ) shown in Figure 2 as per standard procedure (3, 4) . fructose, magnesium, naphthalene, polyethylene glycol, acrylic resin-based powered paint, zinc stearate, sulphur, titanium and toner. Samples of desired sizes were prepared in laboratory or obtained from manufacturers.

The apparatus consists of a glass tube placed over a dispersion cup and fitted with two brass electrodes (3 mm diameter) connected to a spark generating system having variable capacitor bank; variable voltage supply/ continuous spark unit; and step-up transformer. Spark is triggered by high voltage transformer using two-electrode system connected to secondary winding of transformer. Spacing between electrodes is varied between 2-6 mm. With variable combination of capacitance and voltage, it is possible to obtain sparks with ignition energies 0.5 mJâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;3.2 J. There is precise electronic synchronization between dust dispersion and spark onset. Ignition delay times can be selected between 20 to 200 ms.

Dust sample is placed in dispersion cup, dispersed in glass cylinder using compressed air blast and ignited by spark between two electrodes. Ignition trials of dust-air mixture are attempted, after a specific ignition-delay time, by a spark discharge from charged capacitor.

occurrence/non-occurrence of flame is recorded by visual observation. If flame propagation is observed, energy of spark is reduced until no flame propagation is seen for ten consecutive tests. MIE is sought by varying dust concentration; spark discharge energy and ignition delay time. Experiment is started with a dust loading corresponding to dust concentration twice the minimum explosible dust concentration or 3 250-500 g/m and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;go/no-goâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; spark energy is estimated. Once a limit is found for a particular dust concentration, the procedure is repeated for higher and lower dust concentrations until a roughly parabolic curve is obtained for ignition energy verses dust concentration. Ten tests are conducted at most ignitable dust concentration. MIE is determined from MIE vs concentration curve.

MIEs of all dust samples were measured over a range of dust concentration.

Figure 2 presents typical MIE test results for magnesium indicating MIE as 4 mJ and experimental points showing ignition and non-ignition at ignition energies higher and lower than MIE, respectively.

Similar curves were obtained for all dust samples and MIEs were determined (Table 2).

Features

Some possible mechanisms for generation of accidental low-energy electrostatic sparks in practice have been discussed. In general, with dusts with a MIE 5 mJ it is advisable to implement explosion protection measures, which go beyond the avoidance of effective ignition sources. discharges may occur is desirable.

Incendivity of electrostatic discharges from insulating solids in dust cloud/ bulked form for dust-air clouds having ignition energies >5 mJ is still the subject of research; however, their incendivity to low MIE dust clouds is proven. Electrostatic discharges from insulating solid materials/bulk powders can be incendive to sensitive dust clouds. Some metal dusts having low MIE may form electrically conducting layer on solid surface of plant-unit reducing probability of electrostatic spark inside the equipment containing these dusts.

If MIE of dust is very small, incendiary electrostatic sparks may be generated even by minor plant items (Table 1).

Charging of these items by contact with moving particles or by charge migration from charged settled powder will not be fast enough to result in spark discharge hazard. Small objects (C-3 pF) normally have sharp edges/corners causing charge drain by corona discharges as soon as object reaches ~ 10 kV. Timeconstant for leaking any charge on such items to earth is very short (1 s) even when the resistance to earth is ~10 12 .

Such small objects cannot be charged to

high voltages unless charging process is very fast. This forces one to assume that accidental electrostatic spark discharges of low energies (<5 mJ) would unlikely in industries and same safety procedure could be applied to any plant producing powders/dusts of MIE <5 mJ, irrespective of actual MIE of dust. However, due to electrostatic induction charging of small objects may be fast enough to generate high voltages leading to discharge under favourable conditions. For example, if a small metal object is introduced in metal silo (earthed) together with powder (electrically insulating) charged on its way to silo, powder settled in silo may produce intense electric field. As small object comes in contact with this field, electrons inside it may get displaced by induction and a spark discharge may take place, which may lead to ignition, fire/explosion.

Sparks of very low energies may also result from discharge of capacitances of the order of 10 pF charged to moderate voltages. This presents an increased risk of ignition for dusts of very low MIEs. It is essential to take necessary safety measures as proposed in Figure 1 even for these minor plant items.

Reliable Sealing of Heat Exchangers with ePTFE The connections to shell and tube heat exchangers pose immense challenges for the seals that are used because of both the chemically aggressive media and the frequent temperature load changes. Despite its excellent chemical resistance, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is not typically suitable as a sealing material in this case because the creep tendency of this material jeopardizes a reliable seal. Gore uses a process it developed and patented to expand PTFE and thus significantly increase its creep resistance. This in turn improves the reliability of the sealed connection and positions ePTFE as a sealing material for use in shell and tube heat exchangers.

hell and tube bundle heat exchangers generally include not only several connection pieces but also a shell cover flange with a significantly larger nominal diameter.

The shell cover flange creates the seal to the tube bundle flange, which then seals the shell flange. These connections are subjected to the full operating pressure and test pressure of dozens of bar and seal it from the environment. Often times the tube bundles are arranged in several passes that are channeled by the use of partition plates. This requires a seal at the head of the heat exchanger and between the tube passes at the partition plates where the pressure difference is considerably lower. The numerous potential different arrangement of the passes requires specially adapted seal designs.

The sealing challenges that pertain to the main flange position can be attributed to a combination of different conditions: • High temperatures and pressures • Temperature load changes caused by starting up and shutting down part of the process • Complex sealing geometries including separators, often combined with large nominal diameters • Chemically aggressive media • Damaged sealing surfaces, due to corrosion or warping, for example

“Creeping” Gasket Tapes Made of PTFE Gasket tapes are occasionally used to seal the static connections to shell and tube heat exchangers – sealing materials with a defined width and thickness, but an undefined length. They offer a way of functionally connecting the junction points and can be shaped as desired at the point of installation. Since the gasket circumference is completed at the time of installation, it is no longer necessary to completely dismantle the heat exchanger, removal of the tube bundle for example.

It is only important that the sealing surfaces be sufficiently accessible.

Gasket tapes have been around in many different industrial fields for several decades. By introducing the GORE Joint Sealant, Gore launched the first gasket tape made of expanded PTFE (ePTFE) back in 1971. However, multi-axially expanded PTFE technology (ePTFE) finally made it easier to use it with shell and tube heat exchangers across a broader range of application conditions.

The need for these material performance improvements by Gore is the low creep resistance of PTFE. In molecular terms, PTFE consists of a chain of carbon atoms that is saturated with fluorine atoms.

The strong covalent carbon-fluorine bond is responsible for this polymer’s nearly inert chemical reaction behaviour. This explains why this material is desired as a sealing material in aggressive media.

However, the lack of reactivity also means that PTFE chains cannot be molecularly linked like other materials, elastomers for

reason why simple PTFE (often brought into shape by sintering) can hardly be used in heat exchangers, which by their very nature are often subjected to significant temperature load changes.

example, and this results in a profound cold and warm flow behaviour, also known as “creeping.”

Risk of Deformation of the Sealing Material Creeping refers to the mechanical deformation of a component – in this case the seal – when subjected to loads and temperatures. One reason why seals in flange connections function is because the surface pressure caused by the bolts allows for irregularities in the sealing surfaces to be filled up and for blocking of leakage channels inside the seal.

This reduces leakage (depending on the behaviour of the sealing material) to an acceptable level. In this sense, leakage refers to the admissible substance flow, irrespective of the prevailing mechanism, in other words, the sum of all mass flows from Fick’s law of diffusion to gross leakage.

This sealing function is severely impaired by the creep tendency. Inside a flange connection, creep of a sealing material takes place in such a way that the load is reduced at a certain temperature until a balance between the internal strength of the seal and the external load is achieved. This behaviour is called creep resistance. Deformation takes place when equilibrium is reached. With a seal, this is a reduction in the thickness that reduces the bolt elongation and thus

the preload. This ultimately means a loss of strength or surface pressure that depends on the stiffness of the sealing system with respect to its extent. This surface pressure loss is called “creep relaxation” and can be so great that the bolts are loosened completely. Creep and the respective relaxation mainly occur during the heating up and cooling phases, in other words during thermal cycling.

These effects occur to a significantly lower degree with a constant temperature (Figure 1). Creep relaxation is the main

There are different ways to reduce the creep resistance of PTFE. One way is to add filler materials 1. This technique is only appropriate for use with gasket tapes to a limited extent due to the fact that the flexibility of filled PTFE is extremely limited.

Strips of simple PTFE are also not very useful for the same reason; because it is difficult to form them into the required shape at the time of installation. Expanding the PTFE material offers an effective solution. This creates a microporous structure through mechanical stretching.

This structure causes a significant change in properties. On the one hand, it improves the conformability due to the higher compressibility 2, as well as creep resistance on the other hand (Figure 1).

Here, it is important for the expansion to take place as evenly as possible (Figure 2). This is crucial to ensuring that the sealing properties are and remain the

same at all positions of the seal. It can still have a texture, however, although it should not extend throughout the entire seal (in other words for the entire length of a tape). In fact, a controlled transverse texture (with a circular transfer radially) can have a positive effect on deployability and bending stiffness. While such a structure changes the sealing properties

(the transverse strength, for example), this can be taken into consideration structurally (Figure 3). Expansion allows for bands to be produced that are flexible enough to be laid in even narrow radii.

ePTFE gasket tapes are mounted on one of the flat sides of the tape using adhesive tape. The adhesive only serves as a mounting aid and has little or no impact on the sealing effect.

The adhesive is also considerably less temperature- and chemical-resistant than ePTFE. This means it usually decomposes during operation. This makes it easier to remove later on. When closing the seal made of an ePTFE gasket tape, one must make sure that the ends overlap and the right method is used. Basically, there are two different types of ePTFE gasket tape materials that require different overlapping methods: monoaxially and multiaxially expanded ePTFE. Monoaxial expansion is the older technique used to produce ePTFE gasket tapes. With this method, the PTFE is stretched to the tape only longitudinally.

The texture that this creates is responsible for the weaker transverse strength (Figure 5). This results in greater broadening during initial compression, an aspect that must be taken into consideration in the design. Broadening of 20% and more is quite common (Table 1). The advantage that mono-axially expanded gasket tapes offer is that they can be compressed to be very thin during installation. This means they are able to adjust to micro unevenness 5 very easily.

quite difficult to compensate for with this type of tapes. Furthermore, unlike with multi-axial expansion, the ends can be overlapped. Nevertheless, mono-axially expanded tapes are used only very rarely in heat exchanger applications because the lack of transverse strength results in a

higher creep tendency. Although the small installation thickness compensates for this to some degree 7, the performance gap to multi-axially expanded PTFE gasket tapes increases as temperatures rise.

The multi-axial expansion of the material takes place in the direction of two vectors that stand at right angles to each other. This results in a multi-axial structure, in other words an orientation of the emerging fibrils in all directions. The transverse texture can be produced by varying the intensity of the expansion. Among other things, it helps to keep the nodes small because this nonoriented material contributes to creeping (Figure 6). Multi-axial expansion is of particular advantage in that it offers high transverse strength and allows for gasket

tapes that are particularly resistant to creep.

Conclusion The process of expansion compensates for the disadvantage of the PTFE material - its high creep tendency - and results in a chemically stable, creep-resistant sealing material. If expansion takes place multi-axially, the creep tendency of the material will be reduced to such an extent that it can then be used as a sealing material under extreme conditions of both chemically aggressive media and frequent major temperature load changes. Gasket tapes made of multi-axial ePTFE are therefore ideally suited for use in shell and tube heat exchangers. ◘

Intense UV water purification systems are especially relevant to the needs of developing countries because they can be made simple to use and have low maintenance, high throughput and low cost. Plasmabased UV water treatment systems use about 20,000 times less energy than boiling water.

here is only a limited supply of drinking water available as a resource. At the same time, since the beginning of industrialization the worldwide level of water consumption has increased on a massive scale and will continue to grow further along with the tremendous technological development. Today, the provision of water in potable quality, above all to supply a growing world population with clean water, is a global challenge. For this reason, improved water management and, especially, efficient methods for treating wastewater are becoming more important. With the growing population and depleting natural resources, we now face an unprecedented global water crisis. Water scarcity and water pollution have become critical long-term problems that increasingly are severely impacting industry and the quality of human health around the globe. As a result, industry and water suppliers are facing an enormous challenge to replace existing complicated and costly treatments with simple and cost-effective new technologies. In particular, the energy intensiveness, cost, and ineffectiveness of current water treatment technologies present increasing technical and economic challenges to the food and beverage and pharmaceutical industries.

Scarcity of Clean Water

The pollutants contained in wastewater are conventionally removed in central treatment plants after separation of the solid content by biological and chemical means. However, to an increasing extent the substances that are not easily biodegradable remain issues of concern.

These include for example medications in the wastewater from clinics, hospitals and old peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s homes, organic halogen compounds and cyanides from industrial plants or pesticides used in agriculture.

To remove these compounds, physicalchemical methods such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) with ozonation, UV irradiation or the addition of iron salts can be used in combination with hydrogen peroxide. However, these purification processes generally require chemical additives that are classified as hazardous substances and that have to be disposed of as special waste. Scientists and engineers are working on a method to purify water with the fourth state of matter - plasma. The new technology which produces reactive radicals that can attack organic contaminants such as pesticides and pharmaceuticals, will help solve a problem not currently being addressed in conventional treatment methods that rely on filtration and chlorine. The technology, originally envisioned as a point-of-use system for underdeveloped countries, could be scaled up to a larger mechanism that would be implemented as a stage in the conventional treatment process.

The study paves the way for the next generation of portable water purification devices, which could provide relief to the 780 million people around the world who face every day without access to a clean water supply.

Cleaning Techniques The large industrialized purification plants are just not practical â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they consume a large amount of energy and have high labour costs, making them very expensive to run. Small portable purification devices

are increasingly recognized as the best way to meet the needs of clean water and sanitation in developing countries and in remote locations, minimizing the risk of many serious diseases. Some smaller portable devices do already exist; however, because they rely on reverse osmosis and thermal processes, they are able to remove salt ions but are unable to filter out organic contaminants from the briny water found in some river and lake systems. For people in remote locations, briny water can sometimes be the only available water source, that is why it is important to not only be able to remove salts from water, but to also be able to put it through a process of purification.

The other downside of existing portable devices is that they require a continuous power supply to operate their thermal processes. On the other hand, the new membranes could be operated as a rechargeable device.

The use of atmospheric pressure plasma processes could provide an environmentally compatible and costeffective alternative. Ions, highly reactive radicals and short-wave radiation that degrade the contents of the wastewater are formed simply by applying a high voltage, which is igniting a plasma discharge in ambient air or oxygen. This renders the use of chemicals and their subsequent disposal unnecessary. The aim was therefore to develop a plasma process for purifying water and a suitable plasma reactor as a prototype. The special design of the plasma reactor insures an effective transmission rate of the highly reactive species formed in the plasma to the contaminated water. This is achieved by forming the plasma in direct contact with a flowing water film. The water to be purified falls through the plasma zone by the force of gravity, directly on to the outer surface of a grounded electrode (stainless steel cylinder). Hydroxyl radicals, among others, are created in the plasma and transmitted to the water. By means of their high oxidation potential these radicals and short wavelength UV radiation break down the dissolved contaminants until they are mineralized.

Electro-plasma treatment removes radionuclides, oil, surfactants, fats, dyes, heavy metals and other compounds, both of organic and inorganic origin, from the treated waters. Plants currently in operation in Ukraine have a throughput of 500-m 3/day, and are designed to be expanded by the addition of further 500-m 3/day units. The units currently in use have an areal requirement of 8-m 2 for the wastewater treatment unit and an additional 4 m 2 for the drinking water unit. The wastewater treatment units have a power demand of 0.4 to 1.0-kW/ m 3, and a mass of 1,000-kg. The drinking water module has a mass of 500-kg. The electro-plasma wastewater treatment systems used comprise an impulse electromagnetic activator; a counterturbine ejector; an electro-hydro-gasimpulse reactor; an electro-gas-ionic stabilizer and a control station. Water (or wastewater) undergoes primary mechanical treatment and comes to the impulse electro-magnetic activator (EMA), where it undergoes further treatment by pulse electro-magnetic field.

This treatment increases the solubility of gases, reduces the scaling capacity, and increases the sorption capacity of suspended matter, increasing coagulation rates by up to 45%. The effluent then flows into the counter-turbine ejector, where rotating around its axis, the flow pattern changes from laminar to turbulent flow. Simultaneously, the effluent is injected, through the ejector, with ozone, which oxidizes organic compounds and bacteria. The gas-liquid effluent is in a state of slow cavitation (about 7-W/cm 2 intensity) when it enters the electrohydro-gas-impulse reactor (EHGIR). There, the effluent undergoes treatment with pulsed electric discharges, which as a result of the impact of short shock waves (1 to 50-ms at pulse pressure about 20,000-kgf/cm 2), increases the solubility of ozone-enriched air by more than 30 times, forming a suspended matter flocculant that is not less than 0.2-m in diameter. The effluent is also subjected to UV-irradiation to remove bacteria and other pathogens. The flocculants

are removed by electro-coagulation and flotation in the electro-gas-ionic stabilizer (EGIS), decreasing the COD, and removing oil and grease. Chloride ions are transformed into chlorine during this stage of the treatment process, providing a further element of pathogen protection prior to the discharge of the treated effluent.

Purification Membranes Another team of researchers have shown that water purification membranes enhanced by plasma-treated carbon nanotubes are ideal for removing contaminants and brine from water.

According to researchers, these membranes could be integrated into portable water purification devices the size of a tea pot that would be rechargeable, inexpensive and more effective than many existing filtration methods. Contaminated water would go in one end and clean drinkable water would come out the other. The study showed that carbon nanotube membranes were able to filter out ions of vastly different sizes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; meaning they were able to remove salt, along with other impurities.

Scientists attribute the success of the new membranes to the unique properties of plasma-treated carbon nanotubes.

Firstly, ultra-long nanotubes have a very large surface area that is ideal for filtration. Secondly, nanotubes are easy to modify, which allows to tailor their surface properties through localised nanoscale plasma treatment. Now that the researchers have proven the effectiveness of the method, they plan to extend their research to investigate the filtration properties of other nanomaterials. They will begin by looking at graphene, which has similar properties to carbon nanotubes, but could be made considerably denser and stronger.

Advantages Electro-plasma treatment technologies are suitable for numerous operations and can be easily added on to existing treatment systems. The technology is well-suited to producing a product water that may be recycled on-site or to

produce additional final product waters.

Ozonation has a further advantage in that it does not require the effluent to be treated with alum, polyacrylamide flocculant aids, lime, chlorination or other reagents, which require replenishment, preparation and additional treatment water consumption. Ozonation is a reagent-free purification method that is up to 100% effective in removing bacteria and other contaminants, including radionuclides, heavy metals, nitrites and nitrates, with relatively low power consumption rates (0.4 to 1.0-kWh/mÂł of wastewater, depending on concentration of contaminants). The technology is well-suited to providing process water for reuse. The process can be highly automated, and outputs can be tailored to specific requirements.

A method for comparing the efficiency of advanced oxidation processes is the measurement of the energy input that is required to decolour methylene blue by one order of magnitude. Using the plasma process 4-g/kWh is achieved. This value is nearly one order of magnitude better than the energy efficiency measured with a UV H 2O 2 treatment of methylene blue. In another application of the water plasma method the project showed that cyanide is broken down by 90 per cent within 2 minutes. Unlike well-established advanced oxidation processes the plasma process for water decontamination has no barrier between the plasma and the medium that is to be purified. It therefore requires almost no maintenance and is characterized by a long life. A very high degree of efficiency is achieved even without the introduction of hazardous substances such as hydrogen peroxide or ozone. As a result of the project a demonstrator is now available that is suitable for purifying substantial quantities of contaminated water (240-L/h). At the moment further possible applications for the procedure are â&#x2014;&#x2DC; being examined.

he importance of efficiently loading goods has always been evident.

It has only increased with the years. Higher cost of skilled manpower consequently causes the necessity of hiring less qualified personnel. The cost of the goods is made up by the costs of raw materials’ production, storage, loading and shipment to the destination.

With the introduction of better performing, precise and safe production machineries, a major chunk of the cost is passed over from the production to the storage and the loading process. The cost of loading the goods is a precise, inevitable phase, exactly definable that allows a scientific approach to problems and therefore, being able to arrive at solutions, which may be quantified as Return on Investments (RoI).

Efficiently Loading and Unloading of Goods For efficiently loading and unloading of goods at the loading bay the basic equipment comprises dock levelers, a sectional overhead doors and dock shelters. They appear to be independent equipment, but installation of any one without the other may not result in a complete solution at the loading bay.

All three equipment are unbelievably interdependent. However, the choice of either one of the three depends on many factors. For example, the type of goods, the weight, volume, quantity, dimension of the courtyard, the frequency of goods movement, the type of vehicles and the temperature to be maintained within the facility.

The loading bay remains with the Dock Leveler in rest position and the Sectional Overhead Door closed, until the vehicle is positioned. The driver drives back centering to the Dock Shelter and stops the vehicle the moment it gets in contact with the bumpers.

The Sectional Overhead Door is then opened only when the vehicle is positioned, brakes applied and engines shut-off.This eliminates the exit of hot air, intake of cold air (or the opposite in hot and inside conditioned places) and intake of exhausting gases in the warehouse. After the Sectional Overhead Door opens, the lip of the Dock Leveler connects to the truck bed for loading/unloading to take place.

At the end of the loading/unloading the Dock Leveler is put in the rest position and the Sectional Overhead Door is closed, without moving the vehicle.

The vehicle then departs at the end of the process.

How much time elapses between the arriving of the vehicle and the beginning of the loading is the big question that must be solved.

The shorter it is, the greater is the saving and consequently has a bearing on the material cost. ◘

Constructive Details For the parts that are in contact with the product CosmoDry System is built in AISI 316L stainless steel, but other weldable materials are also available if requested by customer, for instance ALLOY C-22 and AISI 904L. The walls of the drying chamber, the port lid and the agitator shaft are heated through diathermic liquid circulation. Why Adsorption is a Better Choice than Absorption?

Previous thermally driven chillers have been effective but have been burdened with significant maintenance and upkeep.

Absorption chiller systems often depend on a corrosive solution of lithium bromide salt that tends to corrode the internal copper tubing and steel shell of the unit.

Additionally, Absorption Chillers produce

hydrogen gas as a by-product, requiring an expensive palladium cell inside the chiller unit to remove the hydrogen.

The lithium bromide solution in absorption chillers also has phase state challenges and has a tendency to solidify within the system while operating. If the regeneration temperature becomes too hot or too cold, or the conditions change too rapidly for the system to adapt, the liquid salt will solidify and crystallize inside the chiller unit. Many installations of absorption units require a dedicated caretaker to maintain.

Conversely, Adsorption Chillers use municipal water as the refrigerant and solid silica gel as the desiccant. There are no CFCs or freons, no Li-Br, and no ammonia. Not using these chemicals equates to no potential for hazardous material leaks, no aggressive corrosion, no

chemical testing required and no damage to upper-level atmospheric ozone.

An Adsorption Chiller significantly reduces the maintenance and upkeep costs by substituting the corrosive salt desiccant with a benign silica gel. Reliability and machine availability are significantly improved. Adsorption Chillers have very few moving parts and do not require the maintenance and attention that the absorption chiller systems require.

How does the Bry-Air Chiller work?

The principle of adsorption works with the interaction of gases and solids.

With adsorption chilling, the molecular interaction between the solid and the

gas allow the gas to be adsorbed into the solid. The adsorption chamber of the chiller is filled with solid material, silica gel, eliminating the need for moving parts and eliminating the noise associated with those moving parts. The silica gel creates an extremely low humidity condition that causes the water refrigerant to evaporate at a low temperature.

As the water evaporates in the evaporator, it cools the chilled water. The Adsorption Chiller has four chambers; an evaporator, a condenser and two adsorption chambers.

All four chambers are operated at nearly a full vacuum.

The Adsorption Chiller uses a simple refrigeration process. The chiller cycles the adsorption Chambers 1 and 2 between the processes of adsorbing and desorbing.

In the figure below, the water vapour flashes off the surface of the tubes in the evaporator, creating the chilling effect captured in the output of chilled water.

The water vapour enters Chamber 1 through the open ports in the bottom of the chamber and is adsorbed into the silica gel in Chamber 1. Cool water is circulated in this chamber to remove the heat deposited in Chamber 1 by the adsorption process.

Hot water enters Chamber 2 to regenerate or desorb the silica gel while Chamber 1 is in the adsorption process. The water vapour is driven from the silica gel by the hot water. The refrigerant water vapour rises to the condenser portion of the Adsorption Chillers where it is then condensed to a liquid state. The condenser water is recycled in a closed-loop to the bottom of the machine where it is immediately available for re-use.

Industry News BPCL to Begin Work on Petrochemical Complex

ABCL Completes Acquisition of Jayashree’s Chlor-alkali Division

Mumbai, India: Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) is ready to begin work on the petrochemical complex in Kochi as it has all the green clearances required and has secured a loan commitment from State Bank of India of ` 4,000 crores.

S Varadarajan, Chairman and Managing Director, BPCL, informed that the PSU has all the required permissions from the Union minister and other regulatory authorities for this petrochemical complex worth ` 5,000 crores in Kochi and the product has been scheduled for completion by 2018.

He added further that this project is a part of the ` 1 lakh capex planned for the five years of which ` 40,000 crores will be reserved for addition to the refining capacity. This Kochi petrochemical project is a part of the Kochi Refinery’s planned expansion of ` 20,000 crores and was announced in December 2011. The project will put a stop to the country’s dependency on import of specialty propylene derivatives like adhesives, acrylic and acrylates used in plastics, paints, inks, textiles and coatings.

New Delhi, India: Aditya Birla Chemicals Ltd (ABCL) has completed the acquisition of Jayashree Chemicals Ltd’s chlor-alkali division. This division includes a caustic soda manufacturing unit in Ganjam, Odisha and a salt manufacturing facility in Pundi, Andhra Pradesh. A regulatory filing stated that the unit at Ganjam would be renamed as ABCL. Jayashree’s chlor-alkali division has 57,000 tonnes per annum capacity at Ganjam. The company has salt works in Andhra Pradesh of 1,600 acres. Last year in September ABCL had stated that it would acquire Jayashree Chemicals Ltd’s chlor-alkali division for ` 212 crores cash consideration.

Pidilite’ Construction Chemicals Sets a Target of ` 900 Crores Chennai, India: Pidilite’s Construction Chemicals Division is set to reach revenue close to ` 900 crores in the present financial year. While speaking at the formal inauguration of the first Dr Fixit Experience Centre, Sanjay Bahadur, Global CEO, Construction Chemicals, Pidilite Industries stated that the company would see revenues of about ` 900 crores this financial year. He added that the division would witness a CAGR of 25 per cent. When asked about the outlook for exports, he said that exports accounted for about 10 per cent of the division’s revenue and the division is faring well in Singapore and Thailand. The company is looking to tap the emerging Asian and African markets.

KRIBHCO to Invest ` 1,000 New Delhi, India: Krishank Bharati Co-operative Ltd, (KRIBHCO) will be setting up a phosphoric and potassic fertiliser plant, an investment of ` 1,000 crores, in Andhra Pradesh at Krishnapatnam. This is the first time KRIBHCO would be setting up a P&K fertiliser plant which would produce only urea. Chandra Pal Singh, Chairman, KRIBHCO stated that Andhra Pradesh offers a host of benefits to KRIBHCO amounting to ` 500 crores. The plant’s annual capacity would be 6 lakh tonnes and this project would be operational in about 4-5 years. Singh also added that the second phase of the project would see capacity being increased top 1.2 million tonnes.

Technology News Scientists Paint Quantum Electronics with Beams of Light Chicago, USA: A team of scientists from the University of Chicago and Penn State University has accidentally discovered a new way of using light to draw and erase quantum-mechanical circuits in a unique class of materials called topological insulators. In contrast to using advanced nanofabrication facilities based on chemical processing of materials, this flexible technique allows for rewritable ‘optical fabrication’ of devices. This finding is likely to spawn new developments in emerging technologies such as low-power electronics based on the spin of electrons or ultrafast quantum computers.

“This observation came as a complete surprise. It is one of those rare moments in experimental science where a seemingly random event-turning on the room lights-generated unexpected effects with potentially important impacts in science and technology,” said David D. Awschalom, the Liew Family Professor and deputy director in the Institute of Molecular Engineering at UChicago, who was one of two lead researchers on the project. Toward Clearer, Cheaper Imaging of Ultrafast Phenomena Washington, USA: Many mysteries of nature are locked up in the world of the very small and the very fast. Chemical reactions and material phase transitions, for example, happen on the scale of atoms — which are about one tenth of one billionth of a metre across — and attoseconds — which are one quintillionth (10^-18) of a second long. A research team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in collaboration with the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), have proposed a new technique that may help record better images of such ultrafast phenomena.

Ultrafast electron pulses are one tool scientists use to probe the atomic world. When the pulses hit the atoms in a material, the electrons scatter like a wave. By setting up a detector and analysing the wave interference pattern, scientists can determine information like the distance between atoms.

Conventional electron pulse technology uses a static magnetic field to compress the electrons transversely. However, the static field can interfere with the electron source and the sample and lead to temporal distortion of the electron pulses both of which can lead to lower quality images. Low-cost wafers for solar cells Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany: Silicon wafers are the heart of solar cells. However, manufacturing them is not cheap. Over 50 per cent of the pure silicon used is machined into dust. A new manufacturing technique developed by Fraunhofer researchers puts an end to these material losses, with raw material savings of 50 per cent along with an 80 per cent reduction in energy costs. A key component of solar cells are thin silicon wafers. The manufacture of these wafers is very time and energy consuming, and correspondingly expensive. What is more, around half of the silicon is lost during production of the wafers. This is not the case with the new process developed by researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg. “With our method, we can avoid almost all of the losses that occur during the conventional production process. This means we are reducing material losses by 50 per cent while using 80 per cent less energy,” says researcher Dr Stefan Janz at the ISE. Another advantage of the new process is that it allows the wafers to be made as thin as desired. With the conventional process, the silicon wafers must be at least 150 to 200 micrometres thick, as otherwise the cutting losses would be too high. The thinner the wafer, the cheaper the solar cell.

Single Atom Alloy Platinum-Copper Catalysts Boost Green Technology Massachusetts, USA: A new generation of platinum-copper catalysts that require very low concentrations of platinum in the form of individual atoms to cleanly and cheaply perform important chemical reactions is reported by Tufts University researchers. The Tufts researchers discovered that dispersing individual, isolated platinum atoms in much less costly. Copper surfaces can create a highly effective and cost-efficient catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of 1,3 butadiene, a chemical produced by steam cracking of naphtha or by catalytic cracking of gas oil. Butadiene is an impurity in propene streams that must be removed from the stream through hydrogenation in order to facilitate downstream polymer production. The current industrial catalyst for butadiene hydrogenation uses palladium and silver. Copper, while a relatively cheap metal, is not nearly as catalytically powerful as platinum, noted Professor of Chemistry Charles Sykes, Ph.D., one of the senior authors on the paper. The Tufts chemists used a specialised low temperature scanning tunneling microscope to visualise the single platinum atoms and their interaction with hydrogen.

The following list is a brief insight into the latest new projects by various companies in India. CHEMICALS Globex Laboratories (R&D) proposes a pigments manufacturing unit at village: Dabhasa, district: Vadodara, Gujarat. According to MoEF sources, the project will come up in the existing land on 9,312 sq m.

Kadam Environmental Consultants, Vadodara is the environmental consultant. The project will entail manufacture of 40-TPM red pigments, 40-TPM yellow pigment and 450-TPM dilute phosphoric acid. Environment clearance has been obtained for the products – red pigments and yellow pigments. Construction work has begun, as EC and NOC have been received. Effluents generated will be treated in effluent treatment plant having MEE. The company has applied for Amendment in Environmental Clearance dated 26th September 2012 for change in fuel from LDO to agro waste briquettes and addition of one raw material, ie, phosphoric acid and generation of dilute phosphoric acid (25 per cent basis) as by-product.

Bohra Industries is implementing an expansion of its chemical and fertilizer manufacturing unit at Umarda, district: Udaipur, Rajasthan on 14,500 sq m of existing land. The project will entail expansion of single super phosphate capacity from 400-TPD to 600-TPD, granulated super phosphate from 200-TPD to 300-TPD and addition of new products namely 150-TPD triple super phosphate, 550 -TPD synthetic gypsum, 30-TPD di-calcium phosphate, 160-TPD phosphoric acid, 0.3-TPD potassium fluoride, 150-TPD H 2SO4 and 0.3-TPD Sodium Tri Polyphosphate (STPP). Machinery has been ordered from China. Civil work is in progress. The project is scheduled for completion in 2018.

Ami Lifesciences proposes expansion of its synthetic organic chemicals manufacturing unit (viz, pharmaceutical bulk drugs and drug intermediates) from 65.70-TPM to 131.60-TPM in Padra, district: Vadodara, Gujarat. The estimated cost of the project is ` 87.046-million. Environmental Consultant to this project is Envisafe Environment Consultants. According to MoEF sources, total plot area is 23,760-sq m (existing 10,270-sq m and 13,490-sq m for expansion).

The unit currently manufactures 2-TPM 1-Acetyl Naphthalene, 1-TPM 2-Acetyl Naphthalene, 6-TPM itopide HCl, 1.20-TPM loxapine succinate, 0.30-TPM amoxapine, 6-TPM venlafaxine, 6-TPM progunil HCl, 6-TPM CB-2-L-Valine, 0.60-TPM nateglinide, 0.60-TPM quetiapine, 24-TPM carbomazepin and 12-TPM oxacarbomazepin. The expansion will involve addition of new products. Water requirement from ground water source will be increased from 34.53-cu m/day to 181-cu m/day after expansion. Effluent generation will be increased from 9.35-cu m/day to 79.5-cu m/day after expansion. Highly concentrated effluent will be sent to captive incinerator for incineration. Remaining effluent (70-m 3/day) will be treated in the ETP comprising primary, secondary and tertiary treatment. Treated effluent will be sent to CETP for further treatment. ETP sludge, inorganic residue and incineration ash will be sent to TSDF. Spent carbon, organic residue will be sent to incinerator.

Astrica Laboratories is implementing a 240-TPA synthetic organic chemicals manufacturing project at a cost of ` 78.8-million in village: Ananthsagar, district: Medak, Telangana. Team Labs & Consultants are the environmental consultants. The project will come up on 6.97-acre of land. According to MoEF sources, it is proposed to treat all HTDS effluent in stripper followed by MEE and ATFD. All LTDS effluent including domestic effluent shall be treated in biological treatment followed by RO system. RO rejects sent to MEE and permeate is used for cooling towers as make up. Solid wastes are generated from the process, solvent distillation, collection/ neutralization tank, waste oil from DG sets, used batteries from DG sets. The ash from boiler is sold to brick manufacturers. The solid wastes; evaporation salts, wastes from the process in inorganic form, ie, process salts and filtration aids shall be disposed to the TSDF, while the hazardous wastes of organic nature, ie, distillation residues shall be disposed to authorized cement units and other wastes like used oil and used batteries shall be sent to authorized recyclers. The sludge from treatment plant shall be sent to TSDF. The basic technology involved in the manufacturing of bulk drugs is the process kettles, heat exchangers, centrifuges and storage tanks. To support the process, equipment boilers, chilling plants, cooling towers, etc, are required. All the above equipment can be sourced indigenously. 80 per cent of civil work has been completed and remaining 20 per cent is in progress. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2015.

Adi Finechem is planning a 40-TPA specialty products manufacturing project on a 2-acre land at an estimated cost of ` 400-million in village: Chekhala, district: Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The project is waiting for environmental clearance.

RSPL is planning a 1,500-TPD soda ash plant and 40-MW captive power project in village: Kuranga, district: Jamnagar, Gujarat. Land acquisition is in progress. 85 per cent of land has been acquired.

The project is waiting for environmental clearance. The entire project is planned for completion in 5 years from zero date.

Superhouse is planning an expansion of its chemical mixmanufacturing project from 200-kg/day to 500-kg/day in UPSIDC Industrial Area, district: Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. The product will be used in leather tanneries. The project will involve installation of containers. The project is in planning stage.

Stellar Chemical Laboratories is planning an expansion of its organic chemical manufacturing project from 7.1-TPM to 84.1-TPM in village: Derol, district: Panchmahals, Gujarat. Machinery is yet to be ordered. Work on the project is expected to commence after receipt of environmental clearances and the completion date is yet to be finalized.

Project Update

MINING Aryan Ispat & Power is planning an expansion of its coal washery in village: Bamoloi, district: Sambalpur, Odisha. The project will come up in the existing 204.65-acre integrated steel plant premises. The capacity of the project is to be augmented from 0.70-MTPA to 5.70-MTPA. The cost of the project is ` 600.7 million. The project is awaiting environmental clearance and planned for completion in 1-year from zero date. According to MoEF sources, the expansion is based on heavy media cyclone (wet process) technology. The washery will produce washed coal of an average ash around 34% (GCV 4,350-Kcal/kg), middling (ash content about 58%) of GCV around 2,350-Kcal per kg useable as fuel in FBC boilers. The proposed expansion will be the stateof-the-art with close circuit water system, classifying cyclone, high frequency screens, thickener and multi-roll belt press filters.

Power requirement of 5-MVA will be sourced from its own power plant connected with the Grid Corporation of Odisha.

NTPC is planning the Kudanali-Luburi coal mining project in district: Angul, Odisha. The company has signed an agreement on June 15, 2015 with Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDCL) for promoting a joint venture company with 67:33 equity participation for undertaking exploration, development and operation of jointly allocated Kudanali-Luburi Coal Block at Odisha by the Ministry of Coal.

DSP Associates is planning a 15,17,600-TPA sand (minor mineral) mining project in the mines of Tikola-1 Sand Unit at village: Tikola, district: Gurgaon, Haryana. Mining lease area is 42.50-hectare. The estimated cost of the project is ` 55-million.

The project is waiting for environmental clearance. Mining work is expected to commence in December 2015. According to MoEF sources, out of the total area, 31.50-hectare area falls in the river bed and 11-hectare area falls in agricultural land (outside river bed). Method of mining will be opencast semi-mechanized without drilling and blasting. The mine will be excavated out in layers up to a depth of 3-m in riverbed and 9-m in agricultural field. Letter of Intent (LOI) for mining contract has been granted for a period of 9 years.

Barmer Lignite Mining Company, a JV between Rajasthan State Mines & Minerals & Raj West Power, a subsidiary of JSW Energy is planning an expansion of the Kapurdi Open Cast Lignite Mining project from 3.75-MTPA to 7-MTPA in Kapurdi, district: Barmer, Rajasthan at an estimated cost of ` 18,000-million inclusive of a new lignite mining project at Jalipa mines. The project is waiting for environmental clearance. NON-CONVENTIONAL ENERGY Hubli Electricity Supply Company is planning solar RTPV grid connected power plants in district: Belagavi, Karnataka. E-tenders have been floated to design, manufacture, supply, installation,

testing and commissioning of solar RTPV grid connected power plants on the roof-tops of 31 of HESCOM office buildings in Belagavi Zone Jurisdiction for total load of 136-KWp including operation and maintenance for a period of five years. The approximate amount put to tender is ` 18.62-million.

Karnataka Renewable Energy Development is planning a 10-MW solar power project at an estimated cost of ` 600-million (approximately) in village: Tingloor, taluka: Madhugiri, district: Tumkur, Karnataka. Surana Telecom And Power has received Letter of Award (LoA) for development of the project.

Maharashtra State Power Generation Company is planning a 50-MWp solar photo voltaic power project in Gangakhed, district: Parbhani, Maharashtra. The company is scouting for land. Other details are yet to be finalized.

Azure Power India is implementing a 10-MW solar photovoltaic power project in taluka: Hiriyur, district: Chitradurga, Karnataka.

PPA has been signed with Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM). Civil work and panel installation work is in progress.

Government of Odisha is planning a 20-MW solar power plant in Manmunda, district: Boudh, Odisha. Green Energy Development Corporation of Odisha is the nodal agency. According to reports, the nodal agency has identified about 120-acre of land at Manmunda for establishment of the project. The land has been allotted to the agency from the industrial park area earmarked

by Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO).The EPC tender is for development of the power plant and maintenance for a period of 10 years. Apart from the Boudh project, the agency is in the lookout for additional land in Koraput, Kantamal and Bolangir areas for installing about 200-MW solar energy capacity.

ACME Solar Energy is planning a 30-MW solar photovoltaic independent power project at a cost of ` 2.4-billion in Chhattisgarh. The company is a JV between ACME Cleantech Solutions, EDF Energies Nouvelles (EDF EN) and EREN, Luxembourg. PPA is yet to be signed with Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Company (CSPDCL). The project is in planning stage.

The project is planned for completion in 1-year from zero date. NON-CONVENTIONAL POWER BMS Starch, a part of the BMS Group, is implementing a 6-MW biomass-based co-gen power plant in village: Kurandi, district: Bastar, Chhattisgarh. The project is coming up along with a starch manufacturing unit on 26-acre of acquired land at a total estimated cost of ` 1,350 million. Equipment supplier is yet to be appointed. Civil work is in progress. The project is expected to be completed by 2016.
