This production is very dear to VYT and to its former cast members. We asked some of them to share a memory from this special show and an update on where they are now. You’ll see those throughout this playbill. Thank you for coming!”

“I’m Myranda Tanquary. I was in two productions of Winnie the Pooh and played the Fox both years (2009 and 2010) This show was one of my absolute favorites because of the tradition. It was amazing to see the show change cast-wise year to year (not just including my run!) and of course... how could I ever forget any of the music or choreography? It’s been 9 years (already???) since I wore Foxy the Fox and I still know “it’s a Winnie the Pooh Christmas story.. it’s a Winnie the Pooh Christmas tail..” While I don’t do theater quite as much as I would like to anymore, I’m trying to live my best life!

I’ve auditioned for AGT, American Idol, and The Voice multiple times. I’ll be 21 next month. Time flies. Winnie the Pooh will always have a place in my heart.” – Myranda Tanquary

MEET THE CAST Elizabeth Evans (Roo) is 7 years old, and in 2nd grade at Biltmore Preparatory Academy. She is known to her friends as “Ellie” and is making her formal theatre debut in this show! She has attended and made smaller performances at several theatre camps at Valley Youth Theatre, Phoenix Theatre and summer school programs.

She is also involved in her school’s after school science program and in Girl Scouts.

She would like to be a singer, artist and a zookeeper when she grows up.

Sydney Hassler (Woodland Friend) is 11 and in 6th grade at Arizona School for the Arts, where she is active in choir, piano and theatre. She portrayed Raccoon in VYT’s last production of A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail and has also been seen in Desert Stages Theatre’s Butterfly’s Day (The Butterfly), Bye Bye Birdie (Ursula Merkle) and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Children’s Choir). She has also appeared in a commercial for Grand Canyon University, through Signature Models & Talent. She wants to be an actor and an English teacher.

Makenna Jacobs (Kanga) is 13, lives in Chandler, and is in 8th grade at Santan Junior High. She has portrayed Piglet and Beaver in past productions of VYT’s A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail, and was cast in our productions of Madagascar (Ensemble) and Pinkalicious (Pinkalicious). Makenna is involved in Bellas advanced choir and is a special education assistant with Stormin’ Buddies at her school. She is also involved in her church youth group. Her career of choice is to be on Broadway or to work for Disney as a performer.

Nathaniel McNamara (Rabbit) is 12 and in 7th grade at All Saints’ Episcopal Day School where he plays the saxophone in the school band. He was recently seen as Les, in VYT’s Newsies and Mort in Madagascar. He has also appeared in East Valley Children’s Theatre’s Peter Pan (Tootles) and Desert Stages Theatre’s 13 (Eddie/ Ensemble). Every Saturday, Nathaniel volunteers at Teen Tracks, at Arizona Animal Welfare League, to help with the animals. This past summer, Nathaniel was accepted to and attended Broadway Artist Alliance, a musical theatre intensive, in New York City. Most importantly, he is an honor student at All Saints’ Episcopal Day School, as he has been every year.

Vivian Paige Nichols (Piglet) is 11 and a 6th-grader at Arizona School for the Arts where she is a member of the choir, recycle club and Hamilton club. She has performed in five productions at Valley Youth Theatre, including Annie, Charlotte’s Web, The Secret Garden, The Wizard of Oz and Madagascar. Last year, she also performed with Arizona Opera in Das Rheingold, has danced in The Spirit of Christmas, seven years in a row, and danced at Disneyland, the past four years. She is most proud of the fact that, this year, she founded the 5th and 6th graders’ new “Broadway Club” in which they will study a different musical - and learn the full story behind each one - every quarter this year.

Brooke Nielsen (Owl) is 17 and in 12th grade at Chaparral High School, where she participates in theatre, dance and lacrosse. This is her first show with VYT, although she has appeared in Chaparral’s Little Shop of Horrors (Chiffon) and Desert Stages Theatre’s 13 (Charlotte) and Hairspray (Little Inez). Brooke aspires to be a Broadway actress and graphic designer.

MEET THE CAST Brianna O’Brien (Gracie Gopher) is 10 years old and in 5th grade at Arizona School for the Arts, where she participates in cello and choir. This is Brianna’s first show with VYT, but she has performed in Desert Stages Theatre’s Feathered (Ugly Duckling) and The Butterfly’s Day (Little Girl). She likes that this particular role allows her to sing and dance, a lot, and hopes the audience learns the magic of Christmas and friendship. Brianna aspires to be an actress or teacher.

Ellie Pompay (Nibbles) is 12 and in 7th grade at St. Francis Xavier. She is a member of National Charity League, loves working with animals and being on stage. This is her first appearance with VYT, but she has also performed in SFX/ Tempe Performing Arts production of Beauty and The Beast Jr (Lumiere), Desert Stages Theatre’s Feathered (The Ugly Duckling’s Mother) and Art & Sol’s Shrek Jr. (Dragon), Lion King (Rafiki) and Annie Jr. (Lily St. James). Ellie hopes to be an actor or to run an animal rescue organization.

Carson Roubison (Tigger) is 15 and in 10th grade at Estrella Foothills High School, in Goodyear, where he participates in speech and debate club, as well as drama. This is his third show with VYT, having appeared in Newsies (Morris Delancey) and Annie (Morganthau/Officer Ward/Warbucks Staff). He was also in EFHS Drama’s production of Murder in Knife Room (Decrepit Invalid). Carson enjoys piano, vocal performance and playwriting. He hopes to perform on Broadway.

Prescott Smidt (Christopher Robin) is 15 and a Freshman at Arizona School for the Arts. This is his second consecutive year in this role and he has been involved with three other VYT productions, including Little Women (Tech Crew) Annie (Ensemble), and Newsies (Bill/Policeman/Man). Prescott has also appeared in Arizona School for the Arts production of Antigone (Tiresias) and Childsplay Theatre Inc’s productions of Into the Woods (The Baker) and Mary Poppins (Michael Banks). He is a member on the council of Youth Ensemble Theatre Inc. (YETI) and would like to pursue a career in film or on stage as an actor.

Samantha Stinnett (Eeyore) is 11 years old and in 7th grade at Foothills Academy College Prep, in Cave Creek, where she is a member of the drama club.

This is her VERY FIRST show at VYT, thanks to falling in love with our production of Newsies, earlier this year. She previously performed in Missoula Children’s Theatre’s production of Aladdin (Vagabond #1). Samantha loves Eeyore’s personality and says, “I hope audience members audition for VYT shows. I hope they also see the friendship between all of the characters.”

Oriana Valcamp (Pooh) Reprising this role from last season, Oriana is an 11th-grader at Arcadia High School. She is 16 years old, lives in Phoenix and has been involved in SEVEN VYT productions, both on stage and on our tech crew. She has also participated in Arcadia High School’s Still Life with Iris (Iris), Urinetown (Officer Barrell) and The Crucible (Sound Operator). She also performed in Spotlight Youth Theatre’s John Lennon and Me (Courtney Cambridge), Mesa Encore Theatre’s Footloose (Bickle) and Hale Centre Theatre’s A Christmas Carol (Belinda Cratchit).

MEET THE CAST Ashlyn Weir (Roxie Raccoon, Jr.) is 13 years old and in 8th grade. This is her third production with VYT, having also appeared in last year’s A Winniethe-Pooh Christmas Tail (Squirrel) and The Wizard of Oz (Munchkin). She also appeared in Arizona Broadway Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol (Cratchit Girl/Angel/Young Fan). Ashlyn lives in Surprise and volunteers at Tierra Madre Horse Sanctuary. She also enjoys tap, piano and singing and hopes to be an actress or journalist.

Savannah Wetch (Woodland Friend) is 11 and in 6th grade at Ashland Ranch Elementary, where she participates in Marine Biology Club and Yearbook Club. This is her first show with VYT! Recently, she appeared in Limelight Youth Theatre’s production of The Lion King Jr. (Djembe/Cheetah). She enjoys arts & crafts, ice skating and singing and aspires to be a pediatric nurse, one day.

Journey Wishom (Brooklyn Badger) is 9 years old and in 4th grade at Kyrene de las Lomas. This is her first role in a regular season VYT production, but she also appeared as Briar Rose in our Spring Break Camp production of Sleeping Beauty. Represented by Signature Models & Talent, Journey has also appeared in a Peter Piper Pizza commercial. She enjoys gymnastics, cheerleading and horseback riding.

Break A Leg!

Designers AND Guest Artists Tristan Peterson-Steinert (Music Director) is thrilled to be returning to VYT this season as music director and to be bringing the 23rd annual production of Winnie-the-Pooh to life. Originally from the coast of Maine, he has called Phoenix home for more than a decade and has music directed more than 15 productions in the Valley. Also an accomplished pianist, he is frequently sought as a music director and accompanist in the Valley, and his credits span regional, professional, and community theater. Some favorites include: Little Women (NYA Award, Outstanding Musical Direction), Polkadots (AZ Premiere), The Secret Garden (NYA Award, Outstanding Musical Direction), The Little Mermaid, Scrooge in Rouge (AZ Premiere), and The Addams Family.

He was previously the Music Director in the Theater Department at Arizona School for the Arts, where he music directed the performance ensembles and musical theater courses. In addition, he maintains a regular performance schedule as a pianist, and he is also a visiting music director at Festival 56 in Princeton, IL.

Ashley Stults (Director & Choreographer) After performing and teaching with Valley Youth Theatre over the past 18 years, (her first show was Peter Pan in 2000), Ashley is excited to be making her directorial debut with Winnie-the-Pooh. Ashley has performed across the country since her time at VYT. Some of her favorites include Seussical the Musical, One Man Two Guvnors, Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson, High School Musical and Beauty and the Beast. Most recently she was seen in It’s Only A Play and Beehive at Phoenix Theatre. Thanks, Bobb and VYT, for everything you’ve done over the years, I’m so lucky to be a part of the VYT family. Proud member of Actor’s Equity Association.

“I was fortunate enough to be cast twice in Winnie-the-Pooh.

I started as a woodland friend in 2012 and then as Christopher Robin in 2013. Being in Winnie-the-Pooh was unlike any other show at VYT. The cast is so small that you really get to know everyone in the cast and they become second family for the month of December. It’s the perfect show for someone who’s not too into crowds to test the waters and get comfortable around others.

At least that was the case for me. It’s so special to be a part of an ever growing family of kids portraying these beloved characters for new generations of kids. I’ve been running my own business for about a year now.

Dear Theatre Lover, As we celebrate our 30th Anniversary Season of the Magic that IS Valley Youth Theatre, we thank you for your support. Because of individuals like you, we inspire young people to be the best that they can be through a wide variety of performing arts opportunities.

Please know how much you are appreciated.

From our humble early days in the basement of Tower Plaza Mall, VYT has evolved into an award-winning theatre company. We are proud of the many contributions that we have made to the community throughout these past 30 years. With your support, Valley Youth Theatre productions remain fee-free. Most, if not all, youth theatres charge an average of $250.00 to $500.00, plus ticket quotas and costume charges.

Thankfully, VYT does not charge these fees and allows for all children, no matter their socio-economic background, to participate as actors, musicians or crew.

During this past year, more than 3700 children from Title 1 schools within the Phoenix Elementary and Roosevelt School Districts, participated in our Literacy and the Arts Program. This Governor’s Arts Award-winning program provides children with a book to keep, which corresponds to our show, a study guide which integrates the book into the curriculum and culminates with a class trip to our performance.

This is often a once in a lifetime opportunity for these children.

More than 1400 children from Valley social service agencies attended a performance of Annie on June 28th & 29th through our Sponsor-A-Seat Program. After each performance, the children had lunch with the cast and crew of our show. This was made possible through support from the community.

The Nigel Ross Scholarship Fund was established last year to commemorate the special talents of VYT child Nigel Ross, who lost his life due to domestic violence. Through this new program, at-risk children are supported by community contributions, allowing for them to attend our spring/summer camps with scholarships. This is just one of our Magic in the Making Programs, allowing for children to grow their talents and skills.

We are honored to have played a role in the lives of thousands of children who have grown into successful, responsible and admirable adults. The Magic Continues with VYT alumni working as professors, attorneys, journalists, police officers, and in countless other professions where they strive to make a difference in the communities they serve.

Alumni have also been successful in the entertainment field, including Oscar award-winning actress Emma Stone, American Idol winner and recording artist Jordin Sparks, SAG award winner & star of Orange is the New Black Kimiko Glenn, Broadway stars Max Crumm, Nick Cartell and Charity Dawson, and television star Chelsea Kane.

Through your support, Valley Youth Theatre remains a safe place where children, from all socioeconomic walks of life, learn and grow as individuals, performers and leaders, in our community, through a transformational performing arts experience.

THE MAGIC CONTINUES...

Having produced A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail 23 times, more than a hundred Valley young people have performed in this particular show. We asked a few of them to share a memory from this production and an update on where they are now….

“A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail is one of my favorite shows I’ve ever been in. It gave me such unforgettable memories. I feel like I made a brand new family during rehearsal, but at the end of the day, we had the treat of performing and putting smiles on the children’s faces and that was the best gift of all. Not every show was perfect - our Christopher Robin went on stage with a broken arm and my red balloon rarely popped on the first try, but the family Valley Youth Theatre provided was always perfect and an incredible blessing. I currently reside in Los Angeles while pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. I work at the Warner Bros. Emmy winning television show, Extra, on the business side of production. A Winnie-thePooh Christmas Tail will always hold a special place in my heart and 14 years later I still know every word to the song.”

Not a day goes by when I don’t think of a memory from that show, my cast members, or the production staff and smile. There is no greater feeling than being in the lobby after a performance and getting to see the smiles on all of the kids’ faces as they meet their favorite characters. The show is a tradition that will always have such a special place in the hearts of everyone who has been involved in it.

Now I’m working as the production intern with the San Diego Opera for their 2018-2019 season, but I will carry VYT with me wherever I go!

The magic of VYT extends beyond the stage. For us, it begins the moment a child walks through our doors. We believe engaging young people in theatre is a powerful way to learn and practice life skills, build self-esteem and foster creativity.

Many times, attending a VYT performance is a child’s first glimpse into the world live theatre, and we are committed to making that initial impression one they will appreciate and remember for a long time to come. We want to offer a positive, supportive opportunity for every child who visits VYT for a field trip, auditions for a show, enrolls in a class, participates in camp or attends a VYT event. Our education programs are designed to help children and teens become entranced in storytelling, grow as critical and creative thinkers, and learn theatre techniques – all while having fun!

To help youth discover the talents they already have and hone the tools they may need to sharpen, we offer a variety of workshops for every skill level – beginning with age 3 and spanning to seventeen. Whether they are natural born performers or just looking to socialize with other fans of fun, VYT’s students will enjoy learning the fundamentals of acting, improvisation, voice, dance and musical theatre in our class and camp sessions. Our professional instructors lead them through engaging performance games and activities that are customized for each technique and prepare students to share their talents in a culminating showcase for family and friends.

BOBB’S RULES OF RESPECT Our often-heard mantra is, “We aren’t about performing arts, first.

We’re about building leaders, first.”

Our goal is to have VYT truly mean something on our alumni’s resumes. That’s why we do more than put on shows. We embolden children to take risks in a safe, encouraging environment, while simultaneously teaching them essential life skills.

This all begins with what we call “Bobb’s Rules of Respect.” All children who become part of the VYT program are taught the importance of promptness, truthfulness, kindness, reliability, dedication, perseverance, listening to others, taking direction, being prepared, being present, being tidy - and being brave. We just happen to use their love of dancing, singing and acting to show children how these skills can help them survive and succeed, throughout their lives.

INTERNSHIPS As a nationally renowned and locally respected midsize non-profit organization, VYT is managed by a group of experienced professionals, each an expert in their respective fields. We are also advised by a Board of Directors comprised of business and community leaders, from a vast array of industries, who are passionate about our mission and roll up their sleeves to help us achieve the vision for VYT. That means our theatre is run like most successful for-profit businesses. All operations, development, marketing and finance functions are conducted professionally and efficiently. It also means that our productions are spectacular, our programs are impactful and our theatre is a wonderful place to work!

This provides an ideal opportunity for students to experience big business practices within the framework of a fun, lively and never-boring local performing arts provider.

Since 1989, VYT has made an impact on hundreds of thousands of children and their families through performances, workshops, showcases and youth development programs. VALLEY YOUTH THEATRE STAFF BIOS Bobb Cooper (Producing Artistic Director) is in his 23rd year at VYT. Under his direction and leadership, it has become a respected, professional-level theatre company where thousands of young people experience the magic of live theatre. Since 1996, Bobb has received numerous awards for his work as a director and garnered several for the theater itself including Arts Organization of the Year. Bobb’s recognition includes: the 2013 Dreamr Award for public sector/nonprofit, being named one of the Valley’s Most Influential business leaders and 40 Under 40 by the Phoenix Business Journal, and Arts Advocate of the Year by the Greater Phoenix Arts & Business Council. His professional affiliations include Valley Leadership Class 33, Organization for Nonprofit Executives, Phoenix Community Alliance and The Screen Actors Guild member since 1985. Bobb has been married for 29 years to his beautiful wife, Karol, and has one daughter, Channing.

Karol Cooper (Resident Costume Designer) is in her 23rd year with VYT. She began her career as a professional clown and costume designer in Sherman Oaks, CA. “Bobbo & Kookee” performed for A-List celebrities and numerous Royal Families. She moved to Phoenix in 1995 and became the Resident Costume Designer for Valley Youth Theatre. During her first 9 years at VYT, she won 12 ariZoni awards for Costume Design and 10 ariZoni awards for Hair & Make-up. She has also won numerous National Youth Awards (NYA) for Outstanding Costume Design. For the 2015 Broadway World Phoenix Awards, she won Best Costume Design for a youth production for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Karol designed at the New Amsterdam Theatre for the Broadway cast of La Cage Aux Folles performing in Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. She believes that research, attention to detail and the love of storytelling through color and texture is essential to a solid overall design.

VALLEY YOUTH THEATRE STAFF BIOS Mark Fearey (Resident Music Supervisor) is in his 23rd season with VYT and over those years has garnered numerous awards (ariZoni and NYA) and has music directed the Arizona premiere of a few shows. Some of his favorite shows to have been a part of are West Side Story, Titanic, Aida, Shrek, Legally Blonde and The Little Mermaid. In addition to his work at VYT, he is the full-time faculty accompanist/coach and music director at Grand Canyon University. He came to the world of children’s theatre with a Masters of Music in Piano Performance (with an emphasis in accompanying) from ASU and a degree in Piano Performance from the D’Angelo School of Music at Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA. He has worked with vocal and instrumental artists in Germany, Austria, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and throughout the Southwest. In addition to all the great kids at VYT he has also worked with opera singer Amber Wagner and country recording artist Chris Young. And if that’s not enough he is also the music director for Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, vocal coordinator/pianist for the Arizona Young Artist Competition at the Herberger Theater Center and visiting music director for Quisisana Music on the Lake in Maine. He is married to his wonderful wife Tory and they are the proud parents of the veteran stage performer Olivia!

Suzie Martin (Managing Director) has lived in the Valley of the Sun most of her life. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, she spent the first several years of her career as a CPA working in the audit division of international accounting firms. She specialized in notfor-profit, government and hospitality audits. Suzie then returned to school and became a Licensed Master Social Worker. She has utilized her business and social work skills at various not-for-profit agencies serving families and children in the Phoenix area. She has professional experience in the areas of child welfare, developmental disabilities, domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse and mental health. She enjoys traveling, football, cooking and spending time with her family and friends.

Debra Bacorn (Director of Development) comes to VYT with experience from Illinois’ largest agency serving families of domestic violence and sexual assault. As a recent transplant to the Valley, Deb spearheads VYT’s development efforts, including fundraising creation, collaboration and grant writing. She is responsible for VYT’s strategies in major gift giving, alumni giving, and individual planned giving. Deb graduated from Lewis University in the Chicago area and spent several years in the corporate arena prior to leaping into the not-for-profit world. Deb moved to the Valley with her husband Ken, son Eric and cat, Mella.

Matt Brown (Technical Director) is excited to have joined Valley Youth Theatre last season. Originally from Texas, he has been living in the Valley of the Sun for the past 11 years. He and his wife are the proud parents of one-year-old Max. Matt has a degree in Theatre with an emphasis in technical theatre from Angelo State University. He has worked at Childsplay and most recently at Phoenix Theatre. Luckily for him, one of his favorite hobbies is his job, but he also enjoys running long distances in the desert mountains around our beautiful state.

VALLEY YOUTH THEATRE STAFF BIOS Joycelin Jacobs-Schwartz (Production Stage Manager & Props Designer) has been doing theatre around the valley for over 15 years, being both on and back stage. Favorite stage-managing credits include: Death Bite (Theatre Artists Studio), Accomplice (Theatre Artists Studio), Madagascar (VYT), and Newsies (VYT). Joycelin has her BA in Theatre from ASU. She would like to thank her parents for their unconditional support and love on this amazing adventure we call theatre.

Tiffany Owen (General Manager) is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh who worked as a freelance stage manager and theatre technician across the Valley after moving to Tempe in 2007. Some of her favorite tech credits include: Into the Woods (VYT), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (SWS), Peacemaker (PT), Complete Works of William Shakespeare [Abridged] (SWS), Rashomon (Pitt Rep), and running spot for Pen & Teller at the MAC. After two years as VYT’s Production Stage Manager, she transitioned to the administrative side of this incredible company inspiring young people to always be the best they can be. She thanks Bobb for being so supportive and finding a new way to utilize her skills, and her loving husband for never questioning her love and passion for theatre. Let’s make the magic!

Anna Patch (Audience Services Manager) has been volunteering with VYT since 2012, starting as a guest stitcher in the costume shop with Karol. Her first show was on the tech crew with her younger brother in 2013 for the production of How I Became a Pirate. She has worked backstage for more than 15 productions, including several shows at the Herberger Theater Center where she learned to be an Assistant Stage Manager. Anna is excited to be an official part of VYT and loves being able to work with all the amazing VYT parent volunteers.

Cozette Phifer (Director of Marketing & Communications) is originally from Phoenix. Her 30-year Marketing career has allowed her to live in Detroit, Seattle, Washington D.C. and San Diego. She has managed marketing and communications for brands that include PETsMART, Domino’s Pizza, Eddie Bauer, Sony Electronics, Jenny Craig, Johnny Rockets and Swift Transportation. She serves as an ally to Phoenix’s LGBTQIA2 community and volunteers her time to related organizations.

Carolyn Marie Wright (Director of Education & Outreach) is thrilled to join the VYTeam! Her extensive service as an artist, educator and arts administrator has reached equity theatres, non-profit organizations, academic institutions and independent entertainment entities throughout New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and beyond. Previous clients include: Geffen Playhouse; Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum; The Second City; Young Storytellers Foundation; The Story Pirates; UCLA School of Theatre, Film & Television; Concordia University Irvine; Chicago Kids Company; MCC Theatre; New Victory Theatre; and Yale Children’s Theatre.
