Since 1989, VYT has made an impact on hundreds of thousands of children and their families through performances, workshops, showcases and youth development programs. Representing all socio-economic backgrounds, we give them a safe space in which to act, dance and sing. There are never fees, charges for costumes or ticket sales quotas for them to meet, just the hope that they will become the best they can be.

Mission

To inspire young people to be the best that they can be through a wide variety of performing arts opportunities.

Our Vision

We are a safe place where young people from diverse backgrounds can learn and grow as individuals, performers and leaders through a transformational performing arts experience. VYT is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Your contribution to VYT is 100% tax-deductible. Please know that your financial support ensures that the mission we began 30 years ago, and the impact that we have made on the lives of thousands of young people, will continue and thrive. The proof of our impact is in the profiles of the young people who have gone on to become our community’s leaders – lawyers, doctors, business professionals, police officers – and, yes, our nation’s actors, actresses, singers and writers. When you support Valley Youth Theatre, you become part of the VYT family. YOU can share the credit for the difference we’ve made in the lives of the outstanding children who come through our doors. Thank you for helping us provide our community’s youth with the opportunity to “be the very best they can be!”

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Thank you for coming to see

They Chose Me!

Not only is this musical an opportunity for our talented young cast to showcase their singing and acting abilities, it’s also a great way for them – and everyone in the audience – to learn about some of the nuances related to foster care and adoption…both the good and the sometimes-not-so-good. After all, we believe you need to see something from every angle possible in order to get a really good view of it. Once again, we’re taking a risk with this production. It hasn’t been a smash hit on Broadway, it isn’t based on a popular movie or television show and it doesn’t come from a classic fairy tale. It also doesn’t stick to the script of a safe, sugar-coated youth production that’s issue-free. What it DOES do, however, is help young people understand the many kinds of families that exist all around them and it encourages them to accept those who may not have the same family they do. The writers of this musical purposely chose to not take the safest route possible when they wrote this wonderful piece. Remember, this show was written before many of these subjects had been addressed in the media and long before they were accepted as widely as they are, today. We are thrilled and honored to have Ned Paul Ginsburg and Michael Colby involved with this production – and even attending Opening Night! I really hope this show inspires you and impacts your life in a positive way. In fact, that’s what we hope all of our productions do for you this, and every, season. We’ll see you at our next production, the 24th year of A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail! Enjoy the show!

Nearly 400 Valley community leaders, parents and patrons of the arts arrived at the Herberger Theater Center to help VYT celebrate and raise funding for our 31st season. A silent auction with more than 100 items generously donated from local businesses was held in the lobby and on Stage West, along with donated food and beverages from several incredible local restaurants. VYT Programs Sponsor-a-Seat allows more than 1,500 disadvantaged children from dozens of social service organizations to attend a free performance at the Herberger Theater Center and enjoy a complimentary lunch with the cast and crew. Just $50 gives a child a memory they will cherish forever! Literacy and the Arts gives students from Title 1 schools a page-to-stage experience by effectively combining the power of in-school learning with the magic of experiencing live theatre. Books related to the production and accompanying study guides prepare children for a production that helps them learn. Our HopeKids program brings children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families to a free performance, immediately preceding opening night. “Valley Youth Theatre is one of our most valued event partners,” said Angie Abfalter, HopeKids program manager. “The laughter, joy and hope they bring to our HopeKids is immeasurable.” Military Night is a tribute to veterans and their families. Thanks to corporate and individual donations, VYT often offers a performance that provides complimentary seats to families of the armed forces, allowing them to reinforce family bonds and create positive life-long memories. The Nigel Ross Scholarship Fund commemorates the special talents and unique spirit of Nigel Ross, a VYT Kid and victim of domestic violence. Supported by contributions from USPI and the local community, it enables young performers to attend the VYT Spring and Summer theatre camps Nigel enjoyed so much. Outreach is important to our theatre. Our VYTeens eagerly perform at a number of events, throughout the Valley, and our casts often hold special off-site performances for children in hospitals and people in need.

31

derful Years of Magic This season marks Valley Youth Theatre’s (VYT’s) 31st season of showcasing the magnificent talents of youth from throughout the Phoenix Metropolitan area! Since its inception, in 1989, VYT has become a world-class theatre company and one of the most well-respected youth theatres in the country. Known equally for alumni who have successfully charted careers on Broadway and beyond - and those who have become business and community leaders, VYT prides itself on nurturing children in the areas of teamwork, cooperation and respect. Producing Artistic Director, Bobb Cooper, joined VYT in 1996 and is lauded for the passion and professionalism he instills throughout the company. He and the theatre have been recognized with a myriad of awards and unparalleled reviews of their productions. VYT is also acclaimed for the many contributions they make to the local community. Sponsor-a-Seat has allowed more than 25,000 at-risk children to attend live theatre, many for the first time. Literacy and the Arts raises reading and vocabulary comprehension for thousands of students attending Title 1 schools, each year. Terminally and chronically ill HopeKids and their families are VYT’s guests for the final dress rehearsal of every production and special Military Nights are often offered for families of active and retired members of the armed forces. Cooper chose this season’s lineup for its fun, familyfriendly appeal, inspiring lessons and timeless themes. They Chose Me, is a musical spotlighting the subject of adoption and foster care, as seen through the eyes and voices of children ages 7 to 18. The show encompasses a variety of issues typically experienced by adopted children. Among them: foster homes, parental loss, gay adoption and multi-cultural families. A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail, is the holiday classic celebrating 24 years that VYT has presented it in the Valley. This Phoenix family tradition is a musical adventure filled with sharing, caring, friendship and joy.

The Princess and the Pea, is the familiar and beloved tale, told with gentle humor. Feisty Princess Astrid finds herself as a prospective bride for the bookish Prince Eric. Although she has no interest in either marriage or princes, she spiritedly takes a series of tests to prove that she is “a real princess.” Dear Edwina is a heartwarming musical about the joys of growing up, from the creators of Junie B. Jones The Musical. The show’s heroine is an advicegiver extraordinaire, like a spunky, singing version of Dear Abby. Peter Pan is one of the most beloved family favorites of all time. This high-flying Tony Awardwinning musical has been performed around the world and delighted audiences for 60 years. Featuring iconic songs and a rousing story full of magic, warmth and adventure, Peter Pan is the perfect show for the child in all of us...who dreamed of soaring high and never growing up. Said Cooper, “I’m very proud to say that we continue to thrive in the Phoenix arts community and that every season is better than the last, thanks to our incredible donors, Board of Directors, staff, students, campers, casts, crews, parents, volunteers and business partners. Together, we inspire young people to be the best they can be.”

Young Arts Arizona helps at-risk children feel good about themselves by publicly exhibiting their art. We thank them for the incredible works – specifically created for this production – on display in our theatre, today! Learn more about this wonderful organization at www.youngartsaz.org.

VALLEY YOUTH THEATRE STAFF BIOS Mark Fearey (Resident Music Supervisor) is in his 24th season with VYT and over those years has garnered numerous awards (ariZoni and NYA) and has music directed the Arizona premiere of a few shows. Some of his favorite shows to have been a part of are West Side Story, Titanic, Aida, Shrek, Legally Blonde and The Little Mermaid. She has utilized her business and social work skills at various not-for-profit agencies serving families and children in the Phoenix area. She has professional experience in the areas of child welfare, developmental disabilities, domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse and mental health. She enjoys traveling, football, cooking and spending time with her family and friends. Renee Bioletto (Costume Shop Assistant) is a native Arizonan and a former VYT Mom. Her daughter, Payton, appeared in several VYT productions, which led to Renee volunteering to assist with our costumes. Since then, she has become Costume Assistant to our Resident Costume Designer, Karol Cooper. Together, they have worked to create costumes for dozens of VYT shows. Matt Brown (Technical Director) is excited for another Valley Youth Theatre season. Originally from Texas, he has been living in the Valley of the Sun for the past 11 years. He and his wife are the proud parents of twoyear-old Max and Luke. Matt has a degree in Theatre with an emphasis in technical theatre from Angelo State University. He has worked at Childsplay and Phoenix Theatre. Luckily for him, one of his favorite hobbies is his job, but he also enjoys running long distances in the desert mountains around our beautiful state. Favorite stage managing credits include: Death Bite (Theatre Artists Studio), Accomplice (Theatre Artists Studio), Madagascar (VYT), and Newsies (VYT). Joycelin has her BA in Theatre from ASU. She thanks Bobb for finding a new way to utilize her skills when it was time for a change and her husband Eric for never questioning her love and passion for theatre. Let’s Make the Magic!! Cozette Phifer (Marketing & Communications Director) is originally from Phoenix. Her 30-year Marketing career has allowed her to live in Detroit, Seattle, Washington D.C. and San Diego. She has managed marketing and communications for brands that include PETsMART, Domino’s Pizza, Eddie Bauer, Sony Electronics, Jenny Craig, Johnny Rockets and Swift Transportation. He comes to VYT with fifteen years of corporate and management experience, mostly in the banking industry. He is also involved in local community events and is an avid musical theatre fan. His favorite musicals are Rent and Funny Girl. Kris is thrilled to be a part of the VYTeam and to work directly with our volunteers, parents and patrons, as well as being a contributing member of the Phoenix arts community. Madolyn Whitmer (Education & Outreach Director) is thrilled to join the VYT team and further their mission to impart life skills to students through theatre and the arts. An arts enthusiast herself, Madolyn graduated from ASU with a BFA in theatre and a focus in playwriting. Madolyn has had plays produced in Arizona, Colorado and New York and has a passion for creating devised work with her students that explore their experiences. Previously, she worked with ARTS ALIVE! bringing experiential, dramatic arts classes to hundreds of students throughout the Houston area which focused on instilling social and emotional learning skills through the arts. At Playworks Arizona, Madolyn continued to work toward instilling social and emotional learning skills to children through play as a part of their Development team with a focus in volunteer coordination, management of large scale special events, and marketing. She is excited to bring her years of experience in the arts and non-profits to VYT and help continue to grow the education department to positively impact more lives.
