Happy New Year and Welcome ... ...to our production of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane!

In selecting shows for our very special 30th Anniversary season, I chose productions that Valley Youth Theatre audiences have never seen us produce before. So, other than our annual production of A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail, our season is made up of something new for you! This includes several Arizona Premieres.

The reason I selected The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane began with the utmost respect and honor I have for Childsplay in Tempe. It is an incredible organization and I’ve always been impressed with their amazing artists and leaders. Dwayne Hartford, whom I’ve known and admired since 1999, is one of these amazing artists. Dwayne took the wonderful story you’re about to see, written by Kate DiCamillo, and beautifully adapted it for the stage. In 2016, Dwayne went from an accomplished actor and stepped into the highest leadership role for Childsplay as their esteemed Artistic Director.

It takes a lot to survive and thrive in the theatre industry. So, watching his journey from actor to playwright to the Artistic Director he is today has been witnessing a miraculous journey, much like Edward Tulane’s.

Another miraculous journey, akin to Edward’s, is that of Valley Youth Theatre.

Edward encounters numerous people along the way who help move him forward. For the past 30 years we’ve received tremendous help and support from so many great people. Thank you for being a very special part of our Miraculous Journey!

MEET THE CAST Jordan Baker (Traveler / Pellegrina) is 15 and in 10th grade at Xavier College Preparatory. This is her first show with VYT. She has appeared in Seussical (Ensemble) at Xavier College Preparatory and S.S. Redrum (Kid #1) at Brophy Student Theater. She’s involved in sign language club and drama club and takes both acting and comedy classes. Although it fluctuates, her current favorite musical is Falsettos. She auditioned for VYT because,“I really wanted to step up my game and learn/experience more.”

Kate Brink (Lolly / Doll) is 15 and in 9th grade at Xavier College Preparatory.

She has appeared in VYT shows that include Madagascar (Kowalski) and Alice in Wonderland (Alice), as well as Seussical (Jungle Animal) at Xavier Brophy Theatre and Beauty and the Beast (Belle) at St. Francis Xavier. She’s involved in drama club and student ambassadors club and takes voice lessons. When asked why she auditioned for this VYT show, “I had been in past shows and loved my experiences.”

Petra Milan Danek (Sara Ruth) is 10 and in 5th grade at International School of Arizona. Although this is her first VYT show, she has appeared in several local productions, including School of Rock (Tomika), It’s a Wonderful Life (Zuzu / Young Violet), Gladys & Dee Dee: Secrets (Party Goer), Elf (Elf #3), Madagascar (Mort), Annie (Molly) and Beauty and the Beast (Chip). Her favorite musical is Head over Heels and, as a career, Petra would like to be a Translator for the United Nations.

Alexander Flores (Jack / Lawrence) is 15 and in 9th grade at Arizona School for the Arts. He is no stranger to the theatre and would like to be a Theatre Designer one day. His VYT experience includes Newsies (Mush) and A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail (Eeyore). As a Jaguar Player of Aprende Middle School, he was in Rock of Ages (Lonnie) and High School Musical Jr. (Ryan), among others. He has also been in Arizona School for the Arts’ Ozma of Oz (Tech Crew) and Antigone (Old Man) and in Childsplay’s productions of Hamlet (Gravedigger / Guard), Footloose (Cowboy Bob / Lyle) and Macbeth.

Ian Gray (Bryce) is 13 and in 7th grade at Arizona School for the Arts. Hoping to be a Broadway Actor one day, he has been in several local productions, including VYT’s Wizard of Oz (Coroner / Munchkin), Charlotte’s Web (Avery), Pinkalicious (Peter) and Emperor’s New Clothes (P.J.). He was also in Phoenix Theatre’s recent production of Fun Home (Christian), Spotlight Youth Theatre’s Into the Woods (Cinderella’s Prince) and the TheaterWorks production of Chronicles of Narnia (Dwarf).

Emily Jacoby (Lucy / Old Doll) is 16 and in 11th grade at Perry High School.

This is her first show with VYT, but she has been in Perry High School’s High School Musical (Taylor), Limelight’s Thoroughly Modern Millie (Bun Foo) and Actor’s Youth Theatre’s Ghost (Ortisha). She’s active in drama club, Perry Theatre Company and hopes to teach theatre to deaf students in the future. What does Emily like most about this show? “I read this book when I was a little girl and have always adored the story!”

MEET THE CAST Olivia Medina (Margery / Shopper) is 14 and in 9th grade at Sageoak Charter School in Redlands, CA. This is her first VYT show, but she has appeared in several screen and stage productions. She is active in dance, voice and acting classes, as well as The Actors Fund’s Looking Ahead Program in partnership with SAG-AFTRA. Olivia’s favorite musical is Phantom of the Opera. What does she like most about this production? “I love the air of whimsy that’s settled within the story.”

Prescott Smidt (Father / Watchman / Lucius / Clark) is 15 and a Freshman at Arizona School for the Arts. He is active in Thespian Society and is a member of Youth Ensemble Theatre Inc. No stranger to VYT, he has been in our past two productions of A Winnie-the-Pooh Christmas Tail (Christopher Robin), Newsies (Bill / Man / Policeman), Annie (Ensemble) and Little Women (Deck/Run Crew).

He has also been in Arizona School for the Arts’ Antigone and Childsplay’s Into the Woods and Mary Poppins.

Asher Stubbs (Amos) is 10 and in 5th grade at Monte Vista. He is in scouts, likes reading, art and Jiu-Jitsu and he wants to be an actor when he grows up.

He was in Studio 3’s Aladdin (Aladdin) and this is his first show at VYT. What does he like most about this production? “I have read the book eight times and I love its meaning. I hope the audience takes away that love is a journey, a miraculous one.”

Matthew Syms (Bull / Neil) is 16 and in 11th grade at Herberger Young Scholars Academy where he’s in thespian club, cross country and Interact. He was in last season’s VYT production of The Hobbit (Bilbo Baggins). What does he like about this show? “I like the message it’s trying to communicate. It is important for others to learn how to be kind and love one another.” His favorite musical is Hamilton.

Micah Wade (Martin) is 10 and in 5th grade at Kyrene de los Lagos where he is Student Body President and in the broadcasting club. This is his first show anywhere, although he does take dance at Evolve and aspires to be a professional actor. His favorite musical is Newsies and when asked why he auditioned for this production he said, “For more experience to help me progress toward my ultimate goal of becoming a professional actor.”

Jessica Wastchak (Society Lady / Old Lady) just turned 17 and is in 10th grade at Hamilton High School, in Chandler, where she participates in X-country and school theatre. She is currently training for a half-marathon and wants to work in the theatre industry, in the future. This is her third VYT show. Jessica has also appeared in Arizona Youth Theatre’s Ghost (Molly), Greasepaint’s Footloose (Featured Dancer) and Spotlight’s Cabaret (Kit Kat Girl / Dancer).

MEET THE CAST Faith Wheelington (Nellie / Marlene) is 15 and in 10th grade at Bioscience High School where she is active in student government and is lead singer in their music club band. She was in VYT’s Annie (Servant / Apple Seller), Alice in Wonderland (Cheshire Cat) and Scottsdale Community College’s Afro (Rosa).

When asked why she auditioned for this VYT show, she tells us,“Because I love the professionalism they teach you and, once you do one show, you become family.” Faith’s favorite musical is Chicago.

Kate Williams (Abilene) is 10 and in 4th grade at All Saints Episcopal Day School. She likes soccer and singing and wants to be an actress. Previously, she has appeared in VYT’s Annie (Molly) and Spotlight Youth Theatre’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Gladys). She tells us she auditioned for this show, “Because I love to act and VYT is the best!” The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is one of Kate’s very favorite books.

Andy Wissink (Edward) This is Andy’s 11th VYT show! He is 16 and in 10th grade at Brophy College Preparatory, where he is an officer in drama club, a member of Red & White Club and active in musical theatre. He most recently appeared in VYT’s Newsies (Finch), Shrek (Captain / Ensemble), Wizard of Oz (Featured Ensemble) and Charlotte’s Web (Templeton), as well as in his school’s productions of Seussical (Horton), Into the Woods (Jack) and Greasepaint’s Elf (Buddy). Why this show? “I love the transformation of Edward and the interesting people he meets on his journey who teach him how to love.”

Designers AND Guest Artists Dori Brown (Scenic Designer) is pleased to be working with Valley Youth Theatre for another season. Her recent designs include scenery for Little Women, Little Mermaid, Madagascar, Alice in Wonderland and Charlotte’s Web with VYT, scenery for King Thrushbeard and Heroes of Olim with EVCT, lighting for Pride @ Prejudice with Southwest Shakespeare Co. and scenery for Little Prince, Christmas Carol and The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe with Theater Works. An extra special thanks to her husband and children for their continued love and support.

Brian Honsberger (Sound Design) Brian Honsberger is an active Sound Designer and Audio Engineer throughout Arizona. Mr. Honsberger is the owner of UPstage Consulting Group (www.UPstageGroup.com), a company providing Audio and Lighting production services for events and venue installations throughout the Southwest. His sound design credits include over 50 productions within the state and his work has been nominated for several AriZoni Theatre Excellence Awards. Mr. Honsberger is thrilled to be returning to Valley Youth Theatre in the role of Sound Designer. His favorite prior VYT productions have included Newsies, Annie, Peter Pan, and Seussical the Musical, to name a few. In addition to his Sound Design work, Brian and his wife Katarzyna own and operate Kat’s Artist Tree, a Music, Dance, and Arts Academy located in Goodyear, AZ (www.KatsArtistTree.com).

Bret G. Reese (Lighting Designer) is excited to be back working with Valley Youth Theatre on such a powerful show. His previous designs at Valley Youth Theatre include productions of Little Women, Madagascar, and The Secret Garden. Bret has been designing all over the valley for fourteen years. Kyle Sorrell (Composer) regularly performs throughout the valley at Arizona Theatre Company (Xanadu, Around the World in 80 Days, Twelfth Night), Childsplay (The Yellow Boat, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, Charlotte’s Web), Southwest Shakespeare Company (Romeo and Juliet, Pride@Prejudice, The Merchant of Venice) and Phoenix Theatre (Mamma Mia, Twist Your Dickens) where he will appear in this season’s Once and Million Dollar Quartet. Kyle’s award winning score for The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane has been performed across North America and his original music is featured locally at Childsplay, Black Theatre Troupe, and currently in Southwest Shakepeare Company’s production of As You Like It.

DIRECTOR’S LETTER

Hello and Welcome to VYT! This 2018–2019 Season is truly a special one – the 30th anniversary season for VYT and my first season as Director of Education & Outreach. I am thrilled to join the “VYTeam” and am grateful for the opportunity to introduce myself to you.

January marks my fourth month not only on staff with VYT – but also as an Arizona resident. I knew that VYT was a magical place the moment Bobb and I connected over the phone. I was sitting in my Los Angeles apartment listening to stories about the joy and growth that young people experience on stage, backstage and in class with VYT. Did I want to be part of a team that is passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people through theatre? 100% yes. Theatre made a world of difference in my life, and I want to pay it forward.

Among all the wonderful experiences I’ve had as an artist and educator, it always comes back around to the beginning, the spark that lighted the way. For me, it was my first show with Yale Children’s Theatre and I was 18. My father had recently passed away, and I was struggling to get back on my feet. I was searching for support and a sense of community when I saw an audition notice for The Frog Prince. I tried out for the role of princess, and I got a part – as the King! I fondly remember wearing oversized red pajamas, a padded bodysuit and a bald cap for the role (photo evidence for your Carolyn and theatre friends at Yale Children’s Theatre enjoyment!). The audiences would howl in delight at curtain call when the bald cap would “accidentally” fall off to reveal I was really a girl!

I quickly realized I had found my calling – and a home – in theatre.

Today, I am excited to create new stories and make new memories with VYT, and all of you.

I love how the magic of VYT extends beyond the stage. It begins the moment a child walks through our doors. We offer a positive, supportive opportunity for every child who visits for a field trip, auditions for a show, enrolls in a class, participates in camp or attends a VYT event.

It is a delight and an honor be a part of the creative team in my role as director for The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. This magical story tells the tale of a self-absorbed china doll rabbit who encounters new friends on an unexpected adventure and learns how to love and care for others along the way. Now, more than ever, this message is needed in our world.

The final ingredient in this journey is YOU – the audience. It is your time to embrace and experience this remarkable tale with us. Welcome to the show and thank you for being a part of the magic that is Valley Youth Theatre!

The Nigel Ross Scholarship Fund To commemorate the special talents and unique spirit of VYTKid Nigel Ross, a victim of domestic violence, VYT and United Surgical Partners International have created the Nigel Ross Scholarship Fund. A natural leader with an infectious smile, Nigel loved acting, singing and dancing – talents that were recognized by his securing the lead role in our production of “Aladdin.”

Not only did VYT’s annual summer camps offer Nigel a place to hone his craft and feel accepted and inspired, they afforded him a temporary respite from the hardships he endured at home.

We believe engaging young people in theatre is a powerful way to learn and practice life skills, build self-esteem and foster creativity.

Our education programs are designed to help children and teens become entranced in storytelling, grow as critical and creative thinkers, and learn theatre techniques – all while having fun!

To help youth discover the talents they already have and hone the tools they may need to sharpen, we offer a variety of workshops for every skill level – beginning with age 3 and spanning to seventeen.

Whether they are natural born performers or just looking to socialize with other fans of fun, VYT’s students will enjoy learning the fundamentals of acting, improvisation, voice, dance and musical theatre in our class and camp sessions. Our professional instructors lead them through engaging performance games and activities that are customized for each technique and prepare students to share their talents in a culminating showcase for family and friends.

We offer volunteers of all ages the opportunity to experience a myriad of behind-the-scenes elements that go into producing live theatre. With our limited staff and prudent cost controls, VYT always needs volunteers to help us create the magic of our theatre.

INTERNSHIPS As a nationally renowned and locally respected midsize non-profit organization, VYT is managed by a group of experienced professionals, each an expert in their respective fields. We are also advised by a Board of Directors comprised of business and community leaders, from a vast array of industries, who are passionate about our mission and roll up their sleeves to help us achieve the vision for VYT. That means our theatre is run like most successful for-profit businesses. All operations, development, marketing and finance functions are conducted professionally and efficiently. It also means that our productions are spectacular, our programs are impactful and our theatre is a wonderful place to work!

This provides an ideal opportunity for students to experience big business practices within the framework of a fun, lively and never-boring local performing arts provider.

VALLEY YOUTH THEATRE STAFF BIOS Bobb Cooper (Producing Artistic Director) is in his 23rd year at VYT. Under his direction and leadership, it has become a respected, professional-level theatre company where thousands of young people experience the magic of live theatre. Since 1996, Bobb has received numerous awards for his work as a director and garnered several for the theater itself including Arts Organization of the Year. Bobb’s recognition includes: the 2013 Dreamr Award for public sector/nonprofit, being named one of the Valley’s Most Influential business leaders and 40 Under 40 by the Phoenix Business Journal, and Arts Advocate of the Year by the Greater Phoenix Arts & Business Council. His professional affiliations include Valley Leadership Class 33, Organization for Nonprofit Executives, Phoenix Community Alliance and The Screen Actors Guild member since 1985. Bobb has been married for 29 years to his beautiful wife, Karol, and has one daughter, Channing.

Karol Cooper (Resident Costume Designer) is in her 23rd year with VYT. She began her career as a professional clown and costume designer in Sherman Oaks, CA. “Bobbo & Kookee” performed for A-List celebrities and numerous Royal Families. She moved to Phoenix in 1995 and became the Resident Costume Designer for Valley Youth Theatre. During her first 9 years at VYT, she won 12 ariZoni awards for Costume Design and 10 ariZoni awards for Hair & Make-up. She has also won numerous National Youth Awards (NYA) for Outstanding Costume Design. For the 2015 Broadway World Phoenix Awards, she won Best Costume Design for a youth production for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Karol designed at the New Amsterdam Theatre for the Broadway cast of La Cage Aux Folles performing in Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. She believes that research, attention to detail and the love of storytelling through color and texture is essential to a solid overall design.

VALLEY YOUTH THEATRE STAFF BIOS Mark Fearey (Resident Music Supervisor) is in his 23rd season with VYT and over those years has garnered numerous awards (ariZoni and NYA) and has music directed the Arizona premiere of a few shows. Some of his favorite shows to have been a part of are West Side Story, Titanic, Aida, Shrek, Legally Blonde and The Little Mermaid. In addition to his work at VYT, he is the full-time faculty accompanist/coach and music director at Grand Canyon University. He came to the world of children’s theatre with a Masters of Music in Piano Performance (with an emphasis in accompanying) from ASU and a degree in Piano Performance from the D’Angelo School of Music at Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA. He has worked with vocal and instrumental artists in Germany, Austria, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and throughout the Southwest. In addition to all the great kids at VYT he has also worked with opera singer Amber Wagner and country recording artist Chris Young. And if that’s not enough he is also the music director for Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, vocal coordinator/pianist for the Arizona Young Artist Competition at the Herberger Theater Center and visiting music director for Quisisana Music on the Lake in Maine. He is married to his wonderful wife Tory and they are the proud parents of the veteran stage performer Olivia!

Suzie Martin (Managing Director) has lived in the Valley of the Sun most of her life. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, she spent the first several years of her career as a CPA working in the audit division of international accounting firms. She specialized in notfor-profit, government and hospitality audits. Suzie then returned to school and became a Licensed Master Social Worker. She has utilized her business and social work skills at various not-for-profit agencies serving families and children in the Phoenix area. She has professional experience in the areas of child welfare, developmental disabilities, domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse and mental health. She enjoys traveling, football, cooking and spending time with her family and friends.

Debra Bacorn (Director of Development) comes to VYT with experience from Illinois’ largest agency serving families of domestic violence and sexual assault. As a recent transplant to the Valley, Deb spearheads VYT’s development efforts, including fundraising creation, collaboration and grant writing. She is responsible for VYT’s strategies in major gift giving, alumni giving, and individual planned giving. Deb graduated from Lewis University in the Chicago area and spent several years in the corporate arena prior to leaping into the not-for-profit world. Deb moved to the Valley with her husband Ken, son Eric and cat, Mella.

Matt Brown (Technical Director) is excited to have joined Valley Youth Theatre last season. Originally from Texas, he has been living in the Valley of the Sun for the past 11 years. He and his wife are the proud parents of two-year-old Max and newborn Luke. Matt has a degree in Theatre with an emphasis in technical theatre from Angelo State University. He has worked at Childsplay and most recently at Phoenix Theatre. Luckily for him, one of his favorite hobbies is his job, but he also enjoys running long distances in the desert mountains around our beautiful state.

VALLEY YOUTH THEATRE STAFF BIOS Joycelin Jacobs-Schwartz (Production Stage Manager & Props Designer) has been doing theatre around the valley for over 15 years, being both on and back stage. Favorite stage managing credits include: Death Bite (Theatre Artists Studio), Accomplice (Theatre Artists Studio), Madagascar (VYT), and Newsies (VYT). Joycelin has her BA in Theatre from ASU. She would like to thank her parents for their unconditional support and love on this amazing adventure we call theatre.

Tiffany Owen (General Manager) is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a BA in Theatre and a BS in Psychology who worked as a freelance stage manager and theatre technician across the Valley after moving to Tempe in 2007. Some of her favorite credits include: Into the Woods (VYT), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (SWS), Peacemaker (PT), Complete Works of William Shakespeare [Abridged] (SWS), Rashomon (Pitt Rep), and running spot for Pen & Teller at the MAC. After two years as VYT’s Production Stage Manager, she transitioned to the administrative side of this incredible company inspiring young people to always be the best they can be. She thanks Bobb for being so supportive and finding a new way to utilize her skills, and her loving husband for never questioning her love and passion for theatre. Let’s make the magic!

Anna Patch (Audience Services Manager) has been volunteering with VYT since 2012, starting as a guest stitcher in the costume shop with Karol. Her first show was on the tech crew with her younger brother in 2013 for the production of How I Became a Pirate. She has worked backstage for more than 15 productions, including several shows at the Herberger Theater Center where she learned to be an Assistant Stage Manager. Anna is excited to be an official part of VYT and loves being able to work with all the amazing VYT parent volunteers.

Cozette Phifer (Director of Marketing & Communications) is originally from Phoenix. Her 30-year Marketing career has allowed her to live in Detroit, Seattle, Washington D.C. and San Diego. She has managed marketing and communications for brands that include PETsMART, Domino’s Pizza, Eddie Bauer, Sony Electronics, Jenny Craig, Johnny Rockets and Swift Transportation. She serves as an ally to Phoenix’s LGBTQIA2 community and volunteers her time to related organizations.

Carolyn Marie Wright (Director of Education & Outreach) is thrilled to join the VYTeam! She is grateful to Bobb for the opportunity to explore this magical story in her VYT directorial debut and wants to thank the extraordinary cast, crew and creative team for their collaboration, artistry and open hearts. Previous clients include: Geffen Playhouse; Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum; The Second City; UCLA School of Theatre, Film & Television; Concordia University Irvine; Chicago Kids Company; MCC Theatre; New Victory Theatre; and Yale Children’s Theatre.

Professional highlights: #Right2Recess with Humanity Play Project (winner Best Children’s Show at NoHo Fringe Festival 2017); Topanga Rose (nominated Best Faith Film at Burbank Film Festival 2016); Wini + George with Katharine Ross (winner Audience Award at LA OutFest 2013); The Best of Second City; This is Not a Tan and There Will Be Snacks at Comedy Central Stage; and BioShock video game. Training: Yale (BA Theatre Studies); NYU Steinhardt (MA Educational Theatre); and UCLA (MFA Acting).

Words of Wisdom from the Show OLD DOLL: From the cracks on your face I would guess that you have seen much more of life than what these young ones have seen. Am I right?

EDWARD: Yes. OLD DOLL: My face has its share of cracks as well. I too have seen life. We mustn’t be too hard on the young ones. They will learn. Like we have, yes?

EDWARD: Yes. Hard lessons.

OLD DOLL: Wonderful lessons. And we keep learning, don’t we? Every time a new person comes into our lives, we start off on a new adventure.

I wonder who will come for me this time. Someone will come.

They always do – eventually.
