We sincerely welcome you to the 54th Annual V8U Ranch Bull Sale!
Don tells a story from back in the 50’s, after selling a group of lighter calves that they had trailed to Community Auctions at Park Bend which was located just across the Belly River from the Ranch. His father Rod Mackenzie Sr. had stated that the boys had better remember that day as they won’t see cattle trade for such a high value in their lifetime (they brought 50 cents a pound). I think we could all imagine the excitement of that day as the fall of 2024 has created an enthusiasm across the Beef Industry that was beyond what many of us could imagine. Our time has come as cow-calf producers to enjoy some good years. Congratulations, it hasn’t been easy to get here. It would be quite something for Rod Sr. to see the value of these cattle in recent months.
We welcome you to the 54th annual V8U Ranch Red Angus Bull Sale where the Bulls will sell live through the sale ring in Fort Macleod just like the previous 53 sales. We work tirelessly throughout the year on all the necessary aspects of hosting a Bull Sale in anticipation of your arrival each year. Words cannot express our gratitude to our customers who have been with us for all of these years. The confidence that you have placed in us to provide you, your breeding bulls is something that we take extremely seriously. We accept the responsibility to produce the kind of cattle that will position you for success. The friendships that we have made in the Bull business are what we treasure most.
For those who have been before, as always you can count on us to bring you a set of bulls from a cowherd with a no-nonsense program. If this is your first time you can expect for us to do what we say we’ll do with no games or gimmicks. We’ll bring the bulls through a speedy sale, as we know that you have things to get back to at this time of year. The bulls

are run together all summer beside their dams in one big group. At weaning they stay in the same group in one big pen so any outliers are the real deal so absolutely no one individual or selected group gets preferred treatment of any kind.
The bulls in this year’s sale are an honest uniform set. The bulls selling have been sorted 8 times to remove any who didn’t cut it, they have fully passed a semen test, and have not had their feet trimmed. We don’t believe in creep feeders. This year Bulls have had almost no bad weather days since birth and had a better grass year, which led to higher weaning weights that they have maintained through the winter growing period. They have been fed a fully balanced diet in a responsible manner to develop the breeding athlete that you need and to ensure that they maintain their condition beyond the breeding season.
We haven’t yet witnessed expansion of the North American CowHerd. We’re optimistic that with low cattle inventory we will continue to see strong market conditions for the next couple of years. Whenever we do see this cow herd begin to expand, Red Angus is well suited to fuel this expansion. The Red Angus cow provides all of the convenience traits of her Black hided counterpart with a little more crossbreeding flexibility, and summer heat tolerance. Red Angus Females have topped sales throughout the last year including multiple events when red heifer calves outsold the steers. Red Angus continue to prove that they are the calving ease experts which will ensure calf viability during elevated price levels. The Red Angus Breed has treated ourselves and our customers well for over 60 years.
Please join us in Fort Macleod on Saturday March 15 at 1:00 PM. Coffee and donuts will be available all morning followed by a complimentary lunch prior to the sale. We are happy to help facilitate any means for you to participate in the sale in the event that you are unable to attend in person. Online bidding will be available through DLMS.
Please feel Free to contact either Jade, Steve, or our sale staff with any questions. We look forward to seeing you at the sale. Jade, Steve, Don
& Linda.

the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first calf heifers.
Expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Expressed in lbs, this EPD predicts differences in the average hot carcass weight in progeny.
A prediction of future progeny’s performance for carcass marbling scores.
Expressed in inches, predicts the comparative depth of back fat over the 12th rib in the average calf.
We have moved to a 4-star calving ease rating. Four ratings are used for the bulls calving ease expectations. The more stars the more confident we are that they can be used on Heifers.
ACTUAL WEIGHTS

Bourne is a Bull who has made a major impact. He saw heavy use at V8U for 6 breeding seasons. Bourne brings added fertility, calving ease, will darken hide colour, improve, foot quality, udder structure, & temperament. Through only natural service Bourne has generated revenue for us that few bulls have ever done. He has consistently been siring a uniform set of bulls who have a high probability of finding a place in the Bull sale. With his preference to sire bulls over heifers the daughters are limited, but are where he really brings his true value. They are moderate, functional, easy fleshing females who are sound uddered, and good footed. Our record setting high selling bull was raised by a Bourne Daughter in 2024 with another daughter raising the high selling bull in the 2023 sale. He had a temperament that was pleasant to work with and feet that the entire angus breed could use. He would jump in and out of the trailer just like an old broke saddle horse. At 7 years of age, he has now been retired, therefore this will be the last opportunity to get yourself a Bourne Son.

Desperado is a Bull we held onto in 2020 to use on our commercial herd, after the success we had using his sire. Once his first set of calves hit the ground, we were so pleased with them that we needed to use him on the registered herd like his dad. As you can see in his photo, he has added style and is longer than a visit to the dentist. With the high number of progeny we have from this bull and his sire we had chosen to retire him back to the commercial herd. His sons this year performed near the top of the pen. This will be the last sale to feature a Desperado.
BOLD 16B
Cobra was the high selling bull at the 2020 Brandl Cattle Co. Bull Sale. His sons bring added presence and eye appeal. They have been well received in the last three sales. His daughters have proven themselves to be top producers. We are calving his third set of daughters this year. Progeny from this sire are limited as he was injured early in the 2023 breeding season. There are only be a couple Cobra sons in this year’s sale, where this will be the last chance to own one.

His sons have been sale toppers including the high selling bull to Lust Farms in 2023. He has some real cow power behind him with his moderate framed mother 13F, being a real producer. He proves that you can have calving ease yet still maintain above average performance. We have moved him up to be used on the mature cows moving forward to continue to build heifer bulls that you’ll want to retain daughters from. He produces moderate front pasture type females with tidy udders that have plenty of milk.

In 2022 we returned to Grass Range where we found an outcross pedigreed bull that we felt checked all the boxes. Credence is dark red, long bodied with a ton of volume. He had a moderate birth weight with curve bending performance. He currently ranks in the top 1% for his WW EPD & 2% for YW. We had good success using him on the heifers last year where he bred most of them alongside another bull. His sons have an average BW of 74lbs with a 102Weaning Ratio. He has a good set of sons in the sale who share their dad’s ability to turn heads and cause hearts to race.
Last year we were working on an Embryo Transfer project with our good 7A cow. Our goal was to create an outcross with a unique pedigree, but maintain the calving ease, soundness, and functionality that we require. We chose a darker hided option in S A V Rainfall. His dam Blackcap May 4136 is arguably one of the most favoured cows in Angus history. The calves from this flush were born light, but hit the ground running, being some of the highest performers over the summer. They are an impressive set of Bulls in the pen. The Rainfall sired sons are all black hided with the red gene.

Thank You
We appreciate all of the help and support we get from good friends and neighbors. We would like to thank the following individuals who help us through our busiest times. Kole and Faith Neilson, Matt and Kerri Nelson & Family, Bart and Tate Young, Bill, Sasha, and Ryanna Elliott, Amber Mackenzie and Family, and all the management and staff at S.A.L.E. There would be no V8U bull sale without these people.
Black Hided Red Gene Carrier – Here’s a bull out of a really nice black hided Bourne daughter who posted a fairly impressive weaning weight with this as her first calf. This is an outcross pedigree to almost all Angus cattle in Canada either red or black. Both Bourne & Trading Right have left us some truly outstanding females. Take note of his WW & YW EPD’s. CE:
Black Hided Red Gene Carrier – This is the product of an Embryo transfer project using the ever-popular Rainfall bull on our good 7A cow. This bull came in last fall with the heaviest weaning weight amongst his full sibs from this flush. This mating has resulted in some bulls with added thickness and dimension with tons of hair. He is a full sibling to lot # 120, & 122.

Bourne himself was used here for 6 full breeding seasons through only natural service. The dam of this bull 14A is still on the ranch at 12 years old with her mother 35U being a cow who stayed around until she was 13. 14A also raised the mother of lot 109 who is an intriguing individual himself. In addition, take note of the milk number in the EPD chart.
A good first effort out of a heifer. This would be another good candidate to use on your heifers and keep the replacements. The mother of this Bull is sired by Bourne who we’ve spoken highly of all through the offering. A nice first effort out of a heifer who held his own performance wise with a moderate BW. There are multi generations of longevity on the bottom side of the pedigree. The Credence sons have lots of style and eye appeal.

A Grandson of the great 13N cow who through embryo transfer had 38 progeny. She is a cow with as much influence as any cow on the place.

A nice dark red bull with ample performance and a straight Canadian pedigree. He performed well at weaning and maintained pace once he got up on feed. He carries the eye appeal of his sire, with some influential cows behind him. His grandmother 15Y made no mistakes. Every calf she raised either ended up in the Bull Sale or in the replacement pen. 15Y is also the mother of 18D who is a cow that we wrote about on several sale lots in the catalog and also found her way into the embryo donor pen in 2024.
This is a true curve bender Anthem son with a modest BW, yet came in during the fall to post a 115-weaning ratio. His mother 15J is just getting started in her career, however she raised a heifer last year to go into the replacement pen and has done a heck of a job on this as just her second calf. An extremely balanced set of EPD’s overall.
These Anthem sons were extremely popular in last year’s sale with an abundance of muscle shape and mass. This bull holds true to the sire group. He has a well balanced epd profile achieving some high rankings for WW & YW. He was out of a second calver who’s mother 9U had raised 12 calves on the ranch.

Here’s another bull with a straight Canadian pedigree. His mother 21C found a way to get bred to either the Desperado 181G or 883D bull for almost all of her calves through natural service. This has worked well with a full brother selling to a longtime customer in 2023.
A calving ease bull who will ensure a good sleep and live calves to take advantage of the strong market. He too has a straight Canadian pedigree. His mother raised a full sister last year who will raise her first calf this season at V8U. The grandmother 27B is still in production at 10 years of age and is a daughter of 39U who was a fantastic cow producing 12 calves and was designated a Premier Dam by Canadian Angus.
This Desperado son posted the heaviest adj YW of this year’s bull pen as he really performed well since weaning. He also has some really good cows behind him, particularly 13N a Premier Dam who has had a big influence through embryo transfer.
This is a calving ease prospect who will sire calves with some growth. A Bourne daughter who was crossed with Anthem resulted in our highest selling bull on record in last year’s sale. Take note of the balance in the epd’s of this bull when analyzing CE, & BW, with the spread to WW & YW.
A bull with calving ease and the performance to make sure that your heifer’s calves keep right up with the big group. There’s a whole bunch of longevity on the cow side of this bull. This is 29A’s 10th calf, with her mother 13N producing until she was 12 and her grandmother 93K in production until 14 years of age.

Don’t miss this bull, as he might be a bit of a sleeper. He is the youngest bull in the offering, but when you really analyze the data on him, he’s got a quite a bit to offer. He performed well at weaning and then stepped it up a notch to post one of the heaviest adj. YW. Take a look at his WW & YW epd’s. The Anthem sons have a ton of thickness and muscle shape to them.
GENOMICS TESTING EXPLAINED
Costs have risen dramatically in the cow-calf industry over the last several years. A cow only has one chance each year to raise a calf. We utilize Genomic testing as a risk management tool. We ourselves have put great emphasis into EPD’s to support buying decisions, and have gone one step further by investing in Genomic testing in all our retained Bull and Heifer calves since 2015. This is an investment that we have made to improve the accuracy of the EPD’s within our herd. With Genomically enhanced EPD’s we can have much more confidence in what to expect from the progeny that a sire will produce. This also gives you as a buyer, more reliable information which in turn gives you more control and aids to reduce disappointment. With several generations of data collected, visual evaluation although still very important cannot be the only trait used to select one of the most important purchase decisions in a cow calf operation. We suspect that we are not alone in saying that we have at times invested in cattle that appeared to be superior, but just didn’t turn out as expected. With the use of Genomically Enhanced EPD’s disappointment is minimized. Normally when EPD’s are calculated, there is a calculation made based on the production of the sire and the dam. Although the resulting progeny share parentage these animals are not identical. If the sire and the dam were the same for two calves born in the same year the resulting EPD’s of those two calves would be identical until they begin to produce progeny of their own. With genomic testing we get predictions from the animal’s DNA which will either increase or decrease an EPD value based on the genetic makeup. This does not artificially improve the actual EPD value, but instead improves the accuracy. An animal that undergoes Genomic testing has as much potential to have their EPD’s negatively impacted as they do to have a positive response. We have had on multiple occasions where two full siblings could be as different as one being a calving ease sire with another being a cow bull with added performance. Genomically enhanced EPD’s help us identify these individuals before they sire any calves. For example, Lot #’s 101, 120, and 122 are full siblings through embryo transfer. Normally their EPD’s would be identical, however because we have utilized this technology you can see variance between them. Depending on the trait, the EPD value printed in our catalogue would have similar accuracy to each bull selling having sired approximately 20 calves before ever breeding a cow. This obviously doesn’t tell us the whole picture, but does certainly offer more confidence than a bull who has not undergone this testing.
Cattle are purchased every day based on visual appraisal alone. Wouldn’t it be nice to have more information when selecting a pen of replacement heifer calves with data to show that they will milk, or have improved fertility over other individuals? It would also be ideal to purchase a pen of feeder cattle and have data to show that their performance, or grading potential is above average. Unfortunately, these are tools that are not readily available as a rule. We are extremely fortunate to have this resource available in the seedstock business and we feel it is to our advantage to utilize it ourselves and provide the information to you to help improve confidence in your purchase decisions.
A big advantage of V8U Ranch incorporating Genomic testing is that parentage verification is included. Every bull available on sale day has been “Sire Verified”. Better yet, all bulls raised by cows who were born since 2015 have been “Parent Verified”. This means that they have been confirmed by DNA as being progeny of both the sire and the dam. This gives us confidence that the cattle that we raise and sell are exactly what we say they are.
In the fall of 2024, the Canadian Angus Association has chosen a different provider to complete Genomic testing. Formerly Angus GS, the test is now called Angus HD. The results are very much the same. With the new logo being the only real change, you will notice.
If you have any questions about EPD’s or Genomic testing please give Steve a call and he would be happy to answer your questions.
