Thank you for your interest in the genetics we bring forward every year. Over the course of 75 years registering purebred cattle we have been developing and marketing 2-Year-Old bulls exclusively. Definitely seen a lot of fads, breeders, and industry trends come and go. Within that time our philosophy to breeding cattle really hasn’t changed: avoid any shot-gun approach to genetic selection, avoid chasing fads, and remain steadfast in maternal propagation.
As cattle producers, we all have access to the same genetics annually. We have focused on stacking proven genetics that fit a desired phenotype; while allowing the environment to sort through the genetic base we have, or have accessed, in order to determine the replacements we keep and the bulls we sell. This has resulted in a multi-generational product that breed true and offers more intrinsic value.
Pictured as a 4-year old breeding bull is Chapman Pay Dirt 0868 who was purchased in the 2022 Bull Sale by Heart Valley Angus. This bull emulates a few claims we have made since our first ForageDeveloped Bull Sale in 2007:
• Sale day is just a snap shot in time of how our bulls will look. Our bulls continue to develop in a positive manner and albeit developed at a slower pace, they mature into robust, athletic breeding bulls with a high level of virility and libido. To be honest, I don’t even recognize most of the bulls I sell a year later – they’ve continued to grow and gain weight during and after the breeding season. 0868 is one of over 2000 Forage-Developed bulls sold that validate their upside.
• Our bulls are very uniform in type which is probably the most reiterated feedback about our cattle. 0868 as the Lot 02 bull looked very similar to Lot 1 and Lot 100 and every bull in between in that 2022 sale. This year’s offering is no different and is probably as uniform a group as we have sold, even with some outcross sires represented. Bulls of uniformity come from cow herds of uniformity and produce calves with uniformity.
• We were using “moderate and maternal” to describe our breeding program before it became “cool” to use those adjectives. 0868 combines those adjectives and has left a group of sons highlighting Heart Valley’s own bull sale; and even better, a group of daughters that will be a big part of their program moving forward. The majority of our cows range between 13-1500 lbs and 0868’s dam fits that mold. In fact, she earned donor status, as did her mother, posting production records of WR 9/110 and
13/104 respectively. This is also the same cow family as our feature Reference Sire for the 2025 Sale Offering, Chapman Pay Dirt 9820.
• 0868 emulates the annual sale offering where there is an attention to the little things pertaining to proper structure in a breeding bull that is often overlooked in the chase of extra performance or better numbers; such as a clean sheath, low-set tail head, proper scrotal shape, a straight topline and a true Angus head.
We recommend that before you buy a bull anywhere, familiarize yourself with their cowherd, their breeding objectives, and their long-term philosophy. Epigenetics indicates you inherit the management as much as the actual genetics from where you source your herd sires. This group of bulls was conceived and raised and brought to you from nothing but drought – they should be resilient with real world expectations.
With that, the sale offering represents a cross section of proven genetics with a high percentage being calving ease bulls suitable for heifers or cows. The bull offering is uniform and consistent – quality sells throughout. Some of the best cattle come from the most underrated herds and invite you to evaluate the offering on Thursday, February 20th.

EPD’s are predictions on how each bull rates against his own contemporary group and the rest of the breed. EPD’s evaluate group averages and offspring’s performance, however they cannot predict individual performance or weights.
For example, if Bull A (WW EPD of +10) & Bull B (WW of +60) were randomly mated with 10 similar cows, we would expect the group avg. weaning weight of Bull A’s offspring to be 50 lbs. lighter than Bull B’s (60 - 10 = 50).
BW Birth Weight - expressed in pounds, is a prediction of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny
WW Weaning Weight - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny
YW Yearling Weight - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny.
MILK A predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters
CE Calving Ease Direct (CE), is expressed as a differencein percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
MCE Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in firstcalf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
