10 TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR HORSE FOR SPRING By: Susan Gentry

WHEN TRANSITIONING YOUR HORSE FROM WINTER TO SPRING, THERE ARE A FEW THINGS THAT WILL MAKE THE CHANGE EASIER

S

pring is just around the corner, and it’s time to make sure your horse is well prepared for the season. Here are 10 tips to ensure your horse is ready for the arrival of spring.

1. Check your horse’s overall health: Schedule a veterinary check-up to make sure your horse is in good health and up to date on vaccinations. 2. Evaluate their diet: Adjust your horse’s diet to accommodate the changing nutritional needs of spring. Consider adding more fresh forage and reducing concentrates. 3. Monitor weight and body condition: Keep a close eye on your horse’s weight and body condition score. Make any necessary adjustments to their diet to en20 | Cowgirls In Style | February/March 2024

sure they maintain a healthy weight. 4. Prepare for shedding: Help your horse shed their winter coat by regularly grooming and using tools like shedding blades or curry combs. 5. Check for hoof health: Schedule a farrier visit to ensure your horse’s hooves are in good condition. Spring is a great time for hoof care and maintenance. 6. Assess pasture conditions: Inspect your horse’s pasture for any hazards, such as broken fences or poisonous plants. Make any necessary repairs or remove any potential dangers. 7. Implement parasite control: Develop a deworming schedule with your veterinarian to keep your horse protected from parasites that thrive in the warmer months.

8. Review tack and equipment: Inspect your horse’s tack and equipment for any signs of wear or damage. Replace or repair as needed to ensure their safety and comfort. 9. Plan for increased exercise: Gradually increase your horse’s exercise routine to help them build muscle and stamina for the upcoming riding season. 10. Prepare for seasonal changes: Be prepared for fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions. Have appropriate blankets or fly masks on hand to keep your horse comfortable. By following these 10 tips, you can ensure that your horse is well prepared for the arrival of spring. Taking the time to address their health, diet, grooming, and environment will set them up for a successful and enjoyable season ahead.

Miss Rodeo America 2024 WE CATCH UP WITH EMMA AS SHE BEGINS HER REIGN AS MISS RODEO AMERICA 2024

CIS Q’s & A’s By: Susan Gentry Photos: Art of Aperture

Cowgirls In Style: Where are you from? Emma Cameron: I was born in Fort Collins, CO and raised in Santa Fe, NM. In 2018 I moved to New York to study at Cornell University. After graduating with a degree in agriculture and animal science, I moved to Kansas City where I worked as a commodity risk management analyst for a commodity trading company. After a few years, I took a position as a diagnostic technical specialist for an animal health company, which provided me with the opportunity to move back to New Mexico and compete for Miss Rodeo New Mexico 2023. CIS: Tell us about your growing up. Did you start with horses at a young age? E.C.: I started going to local jackpots and junior rodeos when I was 4 years old. I grew up in 4H and the AQHA showing and horse judging. In high school I started showing reined cow horses and qualified to the NHSRA Finals in Wyoming three times. I also played soccer and volleyball up until high school when we started rodeoing more seriously. In college I rode on the equestrian team showing equitation and over fences. CIS: When did you start your journey in rodeo royalty? E.C.: I competed in my first local pageant when I was 9. When I was in high school, I was the New Mexico High School Rodeo Queen in 2016 and 2017, and in 2017 I won the National High School Rodeo Queen Contest. Six years later I competed for Miss Rodeo New Mexico 2023 which qualified me to compete for Miss Rodeo America 2024. CIS: What are some of your hobbies when you get some down time? E.C.: I enjoy riding my horse I have at home. I love going to barrel races and riding cow horses, and I have a 3 year old filly I am really excited about. I also enjoy skiing, weight lifting, golfing with my brother, and playing cards (Cont’d)

and baking with my family during the holidays.

CIS: What was your favorite part of your week in Vegas competing for Miss Rodeo America? E.C.:The Miss Rodeo America Pageant is a week you dream about your whole career and spend the entire year preparing for. Getting to spend the week with the girls you traveled with all year really helps relieve some of the pressure of the week. We had so much fun together it did not feel like a competition for most of the week. When it came down to the top five, I was called right next to Mississippi. We had been drawn to be roommates together for the week, and to be standing next to each other in the top five was the cherry on top of such a phenomenal time together.

really started to appreciate fashion and develop my own sense of style. Going into the Miss Rodeo America Pageant, I told the designers who created my wardrobe I wanted to look like Kate Middleton had walked on stage at the NFR, because she is my fashion idol. CIS: What advice would you tell a girl who is looking to get involved in Rodeo pageantry? E.C.:Surround yourself with people you trust and who believe in you, and be willing to take their criticism to make yourself better. Being a rodeo queen taught me to be coachable, and that has served me well now both as a college athlete and in my professional career. Having people who believe in you is also essential because when you are competing at any level, you are not always going to believe in yourself as much as you should, and so having people who will push you to your potential is how you are going to be most successful.

CIS: What were some challenges, if any? E.C.:You only get to experience the Miss Rodeo America Pageant once, whether you win or lose, so I really tried to focus on enjoying every moment of the week no matter how much pressure I was feeling. CIS: What is your fashion sense? Are you a jeans/ boots type of girl or more dress up? E.C.:Growing up I wore gym clothes or jeans and a ball cap everyday. When I moved to New York I

FOX’s Farmer Wants A Wife MEET TY, MITCHELL, BRANDON AND NATHAN ALL LOOKING TO FIND A WIFE ON THE SECOND SEASON OF “FARMER WANTS A WIFE” The second season of the FOX show focuses on four farmers — Ty Ferrell, Mitchell Kolinsky, Brandon Rogers and Nathan Smothers — and their journey to love. Each bachelor will host a group of eight single women who all hail from a city and expose them to the country lifestyle. The show has multiple international iterations and first aired in the U.S. in 2023. Season 2’s stars range in age from 23 to 42 and work on all different styles of ranches, from a citrus farm to a potato and barley farm. 36 | Cowgirls In Style | February/March 2024

Farmer Wants a Wife premieres on FOX on Feb. 1 at 9 pm ET/PT. and will be available to stream on Hulu. So who are the four farmers looking to find their match? We will give you everything you need to know about these four bachelors, Ty Ferrell, Mitchell Kolinsky, Brandon Rogers and Nathan Smothers and their lives before the show. Who will your favorite be? www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 37

Ty Ferrell, 42 Missouri

Ty Ferrell on ‘Farmer Wants a Wife’. Photo: MICHAEL BECKER / FOX

Hailing from Sikeston, Missouri, Ferrell is a 42-yearold single dad. He owns a 50-acre farm with horses and roping cattle and lists his occupation as a team roper, per FOX. Per his bio, he is divorced and has a 12-year-old daughter, Lennon Tyler. Lennon shares an interest in horseback riding and fishing with her father, and the proud dad often posts sweet tributes to his little girl on Instagram. “She may not like it as much when I call her my baby girl any more, but that’s one thing she will always be in my eyes,” he wrote on her 12th birthday in August 2023. “Daddy lil girl from day one. Happy 12th birthday Lennon Tyler.” Ferrell joined Farmer Wants a Wife in the hopes of 38 | Cowgirls In Style | February/March 2024

finding his “person” to enjoy life on his farm with. “I’m looking for someone to be my person, my partner, the good, the bad and everything that’s in between,” he said in his promotional video for the show. “This experience is about me finding somebody.” He specified that he was looking for someone who has “high level intelligence” and a “beautiful mind.” However, the woman would need to win the approval of his daughter first. “My little girl is my everything,” he said.

Mitchell Kolinsky, 27 Tennessee

Mitchell Kolinsky on ‘Farmer Wants a Wife’. Photo: MICHAEL BECKER / FOX

Kolinsky is a first-generation farm owner in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, though he is originally from another town in the state, Knoxville. He owns a new farm with a 19th-century cabin where he lives with his three dogs, however, he has goals of expanding his land into the nearby woods. Though he grew up in Knoxville with parents and two brothers who have more traditional white-collar jobs, Kolinsky always loved the outdoors and had plans to make a career out of his passion. “He knew a life in the heartland was the one for him, so he bought his first farm to pursue his dream of becoming a horse and cattle rancher,” his bio in the press release reads. “He hopes to build a farming legacy with a wife by his side.” Having grown up as the youngest of three boys, Kolinsky places great value on family and relied on the

support of his crew — including his baby niece and nephew — as he embarked on his journey to find love on the show. “Family is everything to me, being the baby of 3 boys I always looked up to my older brothers and parents for love and support,” he wrote under a photo of him with his whole family on Instagram. “But now it is time to find it on my own.” Beyond family, Kolinsky is looking for a wife who will grow the farm with him, as that’s one of his main priorities. “This land gives me my greatest peace,” he said in his promotional video on Instagram. “If I could share it with someone special, man, that would just mean the world to me. I feel like I got everything in my puzzle but one, and that’s the woman to make it all complete.” www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 39

Brandon Rodgers, 42 Colorado

Brandon Rodgers on ‘Farmer Wants a Wife’. Photo: MICHAEL BECKER / FOX

Rogers is a 29-year-old farmer from Center, Colorado, where he is a second-generation potato and barley farmer on a 1,000-acre farm. Center is a “onestoplight town” surrounded by Rogers’ family farm, per EW, and he grew up working on the land with his dad. “Later in his 20s, he returned to work the farm full time to continue his family’s farming legacy,” per his bio. “His business is set up and doing well, and now the missing piece is that special person to share it with.” According to his Facebook, Rogers attended Colorado Mesa University and Adams State University before going on to his family’s farm. He describes himself in his bio as “just a small town farmer with a green thumb who loves the outdoors, golf, and learn40 | Cowgirls In Style | February/March 2024

ing new things.” Rogers may be busy tending to his crops, including alfalfa, but that doesn’t mean he’s not ready to find the “one!” “I am on this show looking for love,” he said during the group’s promotional video in December 2023.

Nathan Smothers, 23 Florida

Nathan Smothers on ‘Farmer Wants a Wife’. Photo: MICHAEL BECKER / FOX

The youngest of the group is Smothers, a 23-yearold citrus and cattle farmer from Bartow, Florida. Smothers’ ranch is 300 acres and he has an additional 500 acre cattle property, both of which have been in his family for four generations. When he was 12 years old, his dad died, leaving him as the “man of the house,” per his bio, and helping his mom and three older sisters: Nicole, Savannah and Aubrey. “He returned to live and work on the farm full time when he graduated from college and is eager to begin his next chapter, including starting a family with the love of his life,” his bio reads. Besides ranching, Smothers is a doting uncle to six nieces and nephews, welcoming his most recent nephew in January 2024. He also has a large plat-

form on TikTok where he posts videos of himself performing his duties on the farm and his own musings. He may be young, but Smothers is ready to settle down and find the “love of [his] life.” “I can’t wait to find that partner that can be with me until hopefully the end of time,” he said in the group promo.

Morgan Stock Horse Association THE MORGAN HORSE IS ONE OF THE EARLIEST HORSE BREEDS DEVELOPED IN THE UNITED STATES. WE FEATURE THE MORGAN STOCK HORSE ASSOCIATION

he Morgan Stock Horse Association is an active group of Morgan stock horse breeders that have formed this organization with the goal of educating and promoting the Morgan Horse to those who are not aware of the Morgan breed outside of the Morgan community. Our aim is to promote the Morgan’s aptitude for stock work, ranch horse, Cowboy and Western dressage, trail pleasure, packing, vaquero horsemanship and Mounted Cowboy Shooting uses, to those wanting a high quality/stylish mount. The purpose of our website is to also help the buyer find breeders that have ranch stock for sale and stallions available for breeding service on the “Farm Directory” page. www.cowgirlsinstyle.com | 47

Courtesy: Morgan Stock Horse Association

The Morgan is America’s oldest horse breed, with the first stallion Figure (later known as a namesake to an early owner Justin Morgan) foaling in 1789. All Morgans trace back to this single unique stallion. The Morgan horse has long been used for ranch and vaquero tasks many years before other American breeds and registries were formed. The Morgan baroque top line lends itself to fitting the ideal image for vaquero horsemanship, making it preferred as one of the original horse breeds for this spade bit use in the United States.

48 | Cowgirls In Style | February/March 2024

The Morgan bloodlines are in the foundation of most all of the American saddle horse breeds, including the Quarter Horse, Saddlebred, Missouri Fox Trotter, Tennessee Walking Horse, Rocky Mountain Horse and others due to its favored qualities. Is it any wonder the Morgan was the first original Cowboy Dressage horse and also toured with the Royal Lipizzans during their first US and Canadian tour in 1964?

What separates the Morgan from the other breeds? The goal of the Morgan stock horse breeder is to selectively breed for its unique confirmation, beauty and type, not found in any other breed. Substance with refinement, free of hereditary or navicular problems. It is not bred for a limited single specialized performance, use or color pattern. The Morgan excels as a good natured, all around general purpose, do anything mount. The Morgan is known for its stylish appearance and energetic carriage, allowing it to move like a balanced, proud, high quality saddle horse and not a low headed draft work horse with a heavy harness conformation.

Navicular and other hereditary problems are rare in Morgans, with fewer veterinary bills, good feet and legs. Morgans are very hardy and extremely efficient to feed. Often not required to be shod for the hardest day’s work. Easily trainable mind, people friendly dispositions. Problems associated with other breeds have been avoided in the Morgan by selective breeding practices. This makes the Morgan a classic, all around, versatile, general purpose horse with emphasis on maintaining high quality and endurance, valued by all knowledgeable horsemen. A horse that you will take extra pride in owning.
