PROTECTING YOUR DOWNSIDE

I took exactly zero hours of undergraduate agriculture classes. In fact, the University of Louisville doesn’t even have an ag department. My wife had never even been on a full-time cattle operation before meeting me. All of these things have resulted in most of our lifelong friends never stepping foot on a cattle operation before meeting us. In social settings be it a wedding, cocktail hour, or group dinner, I am often asked by a new acquaintance what I do for work. I quickly learned years ago if I don’t stem off those conversations early, that I will spend my entire evening away from cows talking about cows. When I say I am in beef production, I pray the follow-up question is about steak. That is an easy conversation to have that isn’t a 30-minute question and answer session about my day to day. Nearly half the time I even end up with a new beef customer from a steak question. Other times I am not so lucky. I have found the simplest answer to follow up questions from a typical white-collar worker about my actual day-to-day is that, “I use analytics to make genetic selection in beef cattle to have the highest possible end product value without increasing cost of production.”

In the cattle industry, you are producing a commodity product. You may remember some of my writing before saying that you are a price taker, meaning an individual operation can’t influence the market price of their product. Your market share has no influence on price. Your bottom end culls are worth the same as everyone else’s culls. Your top end program feeder cattle are worth the same as the next persons on a given day. Even with direct marketing meat, I get paid a premium over Kroger for my quality and my story, but I am really receiving no higher price than Whole Foods or a boutique butcher shop for the same quality product. Basic economic theory refers to this as a perfectly competitive market. In a perfectly competitive market, all firms produce where their marginal revenue equals their marginal cost. This means the last unit they produce costs the same to produce as they receive for it. Also, long run economic profits are equal to zero. If there is profit to be made, more cattle are raised increasing the supply. If cattle are losing money, producers exit the market. In the long run no one makes any money. It sounds just like the cattle market, doesn’t it?

My father was in production agriculture in the 1980s, and the cattle had to make money or he was out of a job. My university background gave me a very similar mindset when it comes to breeding cattle but with even less appetite for risk.

I want a sure thing. Short run profits in the beef industry feel few and far between, and we know long run profits are zero. I want to protect the downside as much as

possible while maintaining my upside. I need my cows to give me a big, black hided carcass that grades USDA Choice or higher without eating too much to do it. They need to do it for 12 to 15 years. It takes them 7 or 8 calves to even pay for their development cost. The cows must fit the forage resources of your environment and be able to make it in an average grass year without too much supplemental feed. Extra feed and inefficient cows will raise your cost of production in a hurry. When I look at genetic trends over time in the Angus data base, I feel very alone in my thinking. Based off $EN, it costs $50 more per head to feed the average Angus cow than it did in 1972. Genetic potential from post weaning to finishing (based on $F) has only increased by $59 in that time. To borrow another term from my economics classes, this sounds about like a zero-sum game to me.

The whole commercial cow-calf industry is worried if the order buyer or cattle feeder is going to remember your calves and bid one more time next year because you invested entirely in high end carcass merit bulls and gave up all maternal function. I’ll let you in on a secret. Unless they have fed out full pot loads of your cattle multiple years in a row, they have no idea who you are. Even if you are hanging the very best carcasses on the market, you probably increased your cost of production in your cow herd as much as your carcass value went up and are still no better off. Protect your downside. Make sure your cows show up to work and fit your forage resources. Then you can breed that cow herd to any type of high carcass merit bull you want. I continue to hang high choice and prime carcasses one after another from my breed average carcass genetics. Make your cows show up for work and sell the ones that don’t. It is truly that simple. PRESIDENT’S THOUGHTS CHRIS COOPER Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association President Wow! It’s already the month of May! Seems like the year is already passing by so quickly! I hope everyone is taking some time this busy Spring to enjoy a few moments of God breathing life back into His beautiful Earth. Seems like we have been so occupied with ice storms, snow, rain and flooding that our “normal” Spring jobs of fertilizing and spraying our hay fields and pastures and planting our crops have suddenly came upon us. As the winter mud dries up and we wrap up spring calving, I hope that you have an optimistic outlook and plans for 2021.

I would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank You!” to all of our UK County Cooperative Extension Agents who helped coordinate and execute one of the best “Relief” efforts I have ever seen.

During the recent flooding in Eastern KY, I saw first-hand how County Agents “took the bull by the horns” and stepped up to answer the need of many folks in need whether in their area or not. They worked tirelessly with a lot of different folks and organizations to see that supplies were collected and distributed to the folks in need. We are so blessed to have such an awesome team of UK County Cooperative Extension Agents in KY. They are not just our adult advisors from time to time or our young peoples’ 4-H advisors but they are our friends and neighbors. Take time today to appreciate your County Agents and say “Thank You” for all they do for you and our county.

The month of May is BEEF MONTH and the kick-off to grilling season! I don’t know about your house but around ours, every month is Beef Month! Now I also support and consume our other proteins, but beef has and always will have a special place on the menu at the Cooper house. It is still the people’s choice of protein folks celebrate with from burgers to the best of cuts, Beef is what’s for dinner!

I know that Madison County has plans to celebrate Beef Month by having Madison County Beef Day on May 27th at the Ag Credit Office in Richmond. We started

this back in 2019 by having our County Judge Reagan Taylor proclaim the 4th Thursday of every May as Madison County Beef Day. Our first one was a huge success and because of the pandemic we had to cancel our Beef Day in 2020. For 2021, we are planning a “Drive-Thru” this year by having KY Cattlemen’s ground beef burgers prepared and ready to safely hand out as folks drive through our parking lot.

We plan to partner with our local Madison County Beef Cattle Association, Farm Bureau, Extension and stockyards as well as the KY Cattlemen’s and KY Beef Council to make this a great event to celebrate and promote BEEF! I would encourage all of our county Beef Associations to engage safely in some promotion of Beef this month. It may be just what our county associations and membership needs to help us revive from the pandemic.

Beef has an important and immense impact on our society. From the burgers we eat to the many products that beef is in that we use every day. Beef is also a primary source of numerous essential vitamins and minerals that our body needs every day. God created cattle for man to not only take care of but also to provide man the essential protein and vitamins we need to maintain a healthy body and glorify Him. So as you can see, there is a lot to celebrate about Beef and I would encourage everyone to “tell their Beef story” because there are folks out there that do not share the same love we have for Beef mainly because they just don’t know the facts and truth about beef.

COMMISSIONER’S CORNER RYAN QUARLES Commissioner of Agriculture If you’ve been reading my columns these past few months, you know the General Assembly had a busy session and passed a lot of bills reforming state government. At the KDA, we’ve moved onto implementing the legislature’s will. As you likely know, two bills granted my office more authority over the appointments to two boards: The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board (KADB) and the Kentucky State Fair Board. Last month, I appointed Owensboro’s Suzanne Cecil Paris’ Brenda Paul to KADB and Louisville’s Mark Lynn and Verona’s David Wallace to the Fair Board. We also named Brian Lacefield as director of the new Kentucky Office of Agricultural Policy. All are strong agricultural leaders and I am excited to have them working in their new capacities.

I’m glad to have spent the last month getting back out on the road and visiting farms and businesses across our state. I recently spent some time traveling the

state to hold a series of town halls with farmers, restaurant owners, and other stakeholders to hear about the challenges of the pandemic and the need to fully reopen our economy. It’s no secret the hospitality sector and agriculture are intertwined and restaurants have been hit really hard hit by the pandemic. Despite those challenges, our many restaurants continued to support local farmers. These roundtables are one way I can personally thank them for being part of the farm economy and hear directly from these small businesses owners about how they survived during the pandemic.

One problem we’ve heard about as part of these roundtables is that our restaurants are facing an incredible labor shortage in the restaurant space. We in agriculture know a lot about labor shortages. One of the things I am advocating for in Frankfort is for the Governor to set a date so that businesses can plan to

FROM DAVE’S DESK DAVE MAPLES Executive Vice President Moving the Governor’s Office of Agriculture Policy to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, and with a new name, the Kentucky Office of Agriculture Policy will bring a new wave of board members and staff. Change is always hard but often welcomed. GOAP had a highly impressive twenty-year run. I have often been amazed at how Kentucky Agriculture and Kentucky Policy makers have worked together to use these funds to advance Kentucky Agriculture as well as rural Kentucky.

I am losing count of how many GOAP Executive Directors we have worked with over the twenty years. Again, the amazement of how the transition between political parties and personalities has stayed close to true of the mission of the program and resources. Having a strong Board and dependable experienced staff that take the responsibility serious is the key. Brian Lacefield will take the lead as the new Director of the Kentucky Office of Agriculture Policy. You will also see new

board members as the move is made to the Department of Agriculture.

Just thinking back 20 years the mission of the fund was to transition tobacco farmers into new or expanding areas of Agriculture. The beef industry has been the beneficiary of millions of dollars of these funds. Anyone involved in Kentucky’s beef industry knows how important these funds have been. If you were ever going to be in the beef industry you want to be in the Kentucky Beef industry because of these funds.

It looks like the next twenty years could be just as challenging and exciting as the last twenty years. Today, as I write this article our KCA office has had representatives in the office to talk about technologies that I knew about but really didn’t realize how advanced they have become.

It looks like to compete with the other animal proteins and with the grain farmers for land, the word is efficiency. And the other word and world that you have to pay attention to is the consumer. Consumer demand for products with credentials is a realization. One of the big drivers is going to be less use of antibiotics.

If you take away the technologies that we have become used to like antibiotic, feed additives, implants, and others you will have to transition to different business models or different practices. All of a sudden you have to have genetics that can make up the difference. Watch for more terminal cross bulls, you will be looking at indexes instead of individual EPD’s.

Genomic testing will be more prevalent and the genetic base in your cow herd will

have to be stronger. The health programs in the cow herd and the way you set up the calf will be a must.

The way calves move through the supply chain will change because you will have to be diligent in the animal health arena. You won’t be able to move a group of unhealthy calves into a feed lot of natural calves and get the entire feedlot compromised.

I look at my job at KCA and I have serious concerns about where Cattlemen’s Association will be in the future. No matter where you are in the supply chain; cow-calf owner, stocker operator, stockyard manager, order buyer, dealer, feed company, veterinarian, extension agent or an association employee you have to be aware of what is taking place and position yourself for success. There are lots of opportunities out there.

A while back I was asked who has had the greatest influence on my life. I hadn’t ever given it much thought, like most folks, I guess. After considerin’ for a while I came up with six people that I could say actually affected the direction of my thinkin’. My dad, Doc Brimhall, John Basabe, Red Steagall, Patrick Gottsch and Rupert Mansell.

Mr. Mansell was my vo ag teacher in Las Cruces, New Mexico from 1961-1962.

“Here by the owl. The owl is the symbol of wisdom...” It’s hard for a 16-year-old kid to evaluate wisdom. I remember Rupert, as we referred to him behind his back, tryin’ to teach that rag tag bunch of boys anything (it was all boys back then).

Lots of us really didn’t have much in the way of money. Our projects included 4 or 5 scraggly sheep, or a couple of steers, some pecan trees, rabbits or whatever.

Sure, there were a few boys whose folks were good farmers and had impressive projects but most of us didn’t. Rupert treated us all the same.

What we all had was a love of agriculture and the optimism of youth. That was what Rupert had to work with. He taught us that dirt was under your fingernails and soil was what you tilled. He tried, often in vain, to teach us how to weld and work on machinery. How to block sheep, fit a steer, castrate a hog, and how to tell a rib steak from a chuck. It was not until

much later that I came to realize how much a vo ag teacher has to know.

I said Rupert treated everybody the same.

That’s not quite true since he made me feel like I was special. But, if the truth were known he probably made each one of us feel that way.

He wasn’t impressed by politics so when we decided to invite the governor to be the speaker at our local FFA banquet he said to go ahead but don’t advertise it in case the “guv” didn’t show. We sent out invitations to all the school board, principal and other dignitaries. Most declined; they had other things to do.

The day before the banquet the governor confirmed. It came out in the paper.

Suddenly the local dignitaries were calling trying to get tickets. Overnight they had developed a sincere interest in the Future Farmers. It was one of Rupert’s finest hours.

For all you dedicated vo ag teachers, I salute you, but I remind you that you are in the position to shape young people’s lives. It is no small responsibility. And to Mr. Mansell, who has since passed, from all of us ex-reporters, vice-presidents, greenhands, secretaries, state farmers, soil judges, blacks, browns and whites; if we ever amount to anything, you had a hand in it. Yep, you. There by the owl.

Injectable Solution

Antibiotic 100 mg of tulathromycin/mL For use in beef cattle (including suckling calves), non-lactating dairy cattle (including dairy calves) and veal calves. Not for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older.

CAUTION: Federal (USA) law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

DESCRIPTION DRAXXIN Injectable Solution is a ready-to-use sterile parenteral preparation containing tulathromycin, a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic of the subclass triamilide. Each mL of DRAXXIN contains 100 mg of tulathromycin, 500 mg propylene glycol, 19.2 mg citric acid and 5 mg monothioglycerol. Sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid may be added to adjust pH. DRAXXIN consists of an equilibrated mixture of two isomeric forms of tulathromycin in a 9:1 ratio.

IBK – DRAXXIN Injectable Solution is indicated for the treatment of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) associated with Moraxella bovis.

ADVERSE REACTIONS In one BRD field study, two calves treated with DRAXXIN at 2.5 mg/kg BW exhibited transient hypersalivation. One of these calves also exhibited transient dyspnea, which may have been related to pneumonia.

STORAGE CONDITIONS Store below 25°C (77°F), with excursions up to 40°C (104°F). Use this product within 45 days of the first puncture and puncture a maximum of 20 times. If more than 20 punctures are anticipated, the use of automatic injection equipment of a repeater syringe is recommended. When using a draw-off spike or needle with bore diameter larger than 16 gauge, discard any product remaining in the vial immediately after use.

QUARLES STATEMENT ON VETO OVERRIDES OF SB 93, HB 518

Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles issued the following statement after the General Assembly overrode two vetoes from Governor Andrew Beshear. With the vetoes overridden, the General Assembly has granted additional appointment authority for the State Board of Agriculture and the Kentucky State Fair Board to the Commissioner of Agriculture.

“With both of these bills now on their way to Secretary of State Michael Adams for his signature, I want to thank the General Assembly for codifying the role for Kentucky agriculture in these two important boards,” Commissioner Quarles said. “The State Board of Agriculture is the top advisory board to me and the Department. It also has responsibility over the selection of Kentucky’s state veterinarians, who are employed by the Department to help protect animal agriculture from foreign animal disease.

Senate Bill 93 recognizes how the State Board of Agriculture has functioned in practice for a long time. As I have said, it just makes sense that the Commissioner of Agriculture, whoever he or she may be, has the authority to appoint his or her own advisors.”

“With regard to House Bill 518, I simply wish to state that I sincerely value the role the Kentucky State Fair Board plays in governing Kentucky Venues and its properties, which include the Kentucky Expo Center. I pledge to keep Kentucky’s agricultural history in mind when making appointments to the Fair Board. I also think the addition of the Speaker of the House and the Senate President to the Fair Board will ensure that the Board has a vision consistent with the will of the people across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.”

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

NCBA DELIVERS PRESERVING FAMILY FARMS ACT: A PERMANENT SOLUTION TO A GENERATIONAL ISSUE

WASHINGTON (April 7, 2021) – The Preserving Family Farms Act of 2021 was introduced by U.S. Representatives Jimmy Panetta (CA-20) and Jackie Walorski (IN-2). NCBA has long supported efforts to reduce undue tax burden on farmers and ranchers. This bipartisan legislation to expand IRS Code Section 2032A would allow cattle producers to take advantage of the Special Use Valuation and protect family-owned businesses from the devastating impact of the federal estate tax, commonly referred to as the Death Tax. “We thank Representatives Panetta and Walorski for their leadership and dedication to protecting future generations of agricultural producers through the introduction of the Preserving Family Farms Act of 2021,” said Jerry Bohn, NCBA president.

The Preserving Family Farms Act increases the maximum amount allowed under the Section 2032A exemption from $750,000 to $11 million (indexed for inflation), thus reviving a critically important tool in the toolbox for farm and ranch families across the U.S. If enacted, this legislation will provide a permanent solution to an issue that has long plagued our nation’s cattle producers.

“America’s farmers and ranchers deserve certainty in the tax code overall, and they need certainty especially when it comes to the estate tax. Without it, transition planning for the next generation of producers is nearly impossible,” Bohn said.

Background: In the Tax Reform Act of 1976, Congress recognized the disproportionate burden of the Death Tax on agricultural producers and created Section 2032A as a way to help farmers keep their farms. However, the benefits of Special Use Valuations have

been stymied over the years as the cap on deductions has failed to keep pace with the rising value of farmland.

While the current 2032A reduction is 55 percent higher than the value established two decades ago, USDA estimates that cropland values have increased by 223 percent.

Agricultural land values – including on-farm buildings – have also risen dramatically, increasing by 241 percent during this same period. Due to the rapid inflation of farmland values, the 2032A deduction is no longer aligned with the needs of modern agriculture – nor does it accomplish Congress’ intended goal of providing meaningful protection to those producers who are most vulnerable to the estate tax.

NCBA DELIVERS INTRODUCTION OF HOUSE COMPANION HAULS ACT

WASHINGTON (April 14, 2021) – Today, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) endorsed the Haulers of Agriculture and Livestock Safety (HAULS) Act of 2021. Introduced in the House by Rep. Rose (R-TN-06) and Rep. Soto (D-FL-09), the bipartisan bill would deliver much-needed flexibility for livestock haulers. The House bill introduced this week is a companion to S.792, which NCBA worked to get introduced in the Senate last month.

“In times of crisis and in times of normalcy, livestock haulers are a critical part of the supply chain keeping grocery stores stocked with beef. The full year of disruption due to COVID-19 has only underscored the need for further flexibility in livestock hauling regulations,” said NCBA President Jerry Bohn. “NCBA is encouraged by the bipartisan and bicameral support for this commonsense legislation. Livestock haulers don’t need more regulatory hoops to jump through – they need the freedom and flexibility to continue transporting animals safely and humanely.”

Current hours-of-service (HOS) rules allow for 11 hours of drive time, 14 hours of on-duty time, and then require

10 consecutive hours of rest. When transporting livestock, there is a real need for further flexibility beyond the current hours-of-service. Unlike drivers moving consumer goods, livestock haulers cannot simply idle or unload their trucks when drive time hours run out without jeopardizing animal health and welfare.

“Transporting live animals is not like transporting a truckload of toilet paper — and nobody knows that better than livestock haulers. When one-size-fits-all government mandates fail to account for expertise on the ground, haulers are put in the impossible position of either complying with regulations or doing what they know is best to humanely and safely complete their haul. The HAULS Act represents a step in the right direction — an extension of a current ag exemption to existing hours-of-service regulations that preserves animal welfare as well as safety on our roads, while also making sure producers can keep our grocery stores stocked with beef,” said NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs Allison Rivera.

BACKGROUND This legislation is the latest of many steps NCBA has taken to win greater flexibility for livestock haulers and producers. Since the pandemic began, NCBA has successfully fought every month for a renewed emergency declaration which provides an exemption from hours-of-service for livestock haulers, while also working with Congress to maintain the ELD delay for livestock haulers until Sept. 30, 2021.

NCBA is also working with Congress to ensure that any infrastructure spending package reflects the unique needs of rural communities and agricultural producers.

The HAULS Act would add a 150 air-mile radius exemption under HOS regulations to the backend of hauls for those transporting livestock or agricultural commodities. This legislation also eliminates the seasonal harvest requirements for the agriculture HOS exemption (making the exemption available year-round in all states), and updates and clarifies the definition of an agricultural commodity.

The cost of diammonium phosphate or DAP (1846-0) has nearly doubled in past 12 months! Nitrogen and potassium have also increased, but to a lesser extent. The good news is that well managed pastures remove relatively small quantities of nutrients. Instead these nutrients are cycled within the grazing system (Figure 1). In contrast to pastures, hay production removes larger quantities of nutrients (Table 1) and these nutrients will need to be replaced. The objective of this article is to provide some practical strategies for managing soil fertility in the short-term until prices moderate.

Soil Fertility Principles for Forage Production Adequate soil fertility in pastures and 18

hayfields is key to sustaining reasonable levels of production and nutritive value.

This can be accomplished by building and maintaining strong nutrient cycles in our pastures and replacing nutrients removed in our hayfields.

Single nutrients can limit overall pasture production. This is called “Liebig’s Law of the Minimum”. This principle says that plant growth can be no greater than that allowed by the most limiting of essential plant growth factors. In plain English this means that whatever soil nutrient is the most deficient will hold back overall pasture production, even if the other nutrients are sufficient. This is best illustrated by a barrel model in which each stave represents a different nutrient (Figure 2). No matter how much of the other nutrients that we add to the barrel, the barrel can never fill up

The take home message is that fertility programs for pastures need to be balanced and focus on identifying and supplying nutrients that are deficient.

Grazing animals removing only small quantities of nutrients. Over 80% of the nutrients consumed by livestock are recycled in the form of dung and urine. One cow-calf pair will remove approximately 7 lb phosphate and 1 lb potash per year. If you are stocked at 2 acres per cow-calf unit then our nutrient removal would be 3.5 lb phosphate and 0.5 lb potash per acre per year. It is important to realize that there are other pathways that nutrients are lost from pastures, so even with the limited nutrient removal by grazing livestock, some fertilizer applications will likely be needed over time.

lead to an over or under application of nutrients. Under normal circumstances, the recommendation is to simply follow the application rates provided by the UK Soil Test Report. Under high fertilizer prices, it may be advisable to delay some fertilizer applications. The probability of seeing a yield response for different soil test levels of P and K can be found in Table 2. If you are in the MEDIUM soil test range, the probability of seeing a yield response is around 50%. This means that about 50% of the time you would NOT see a yield increase. In contrast, if you are in the LOW range, the probability of seeing a yield response is around 90%.

Nitrogen often limits production in pastures and hayfields. Nitrogen is highly mobile in the soil and is NOT measured in soil tests. Nitrogen recommendations are commonly based on yield goals. If yield is needed, it is important to apply nitrogen at recommended rates even when prices are higher. One exception is well managed pastures that have developed a strong nitrogen cycle. A key component of this cycle is the use of legumes such as red and white clover and alfalfa.

Legumes fix nitrogen in the air to a plant available form. The importance of legumes in grasslands has long been recognized. They bring nitrogen into hayfields and pastures via symbiotic nitrogen fixation, improve forage quality and animal performance, and dilute the toxic effects of the endophyte found in tall fescue. It is estimated that commonly used pasture legumes will fix between 50 and 250 lb nitrogen per acre per year.

How acid or alkaline the soil is can have a profound impact on the availability of essential plant nutrients (Figure 3). Maintaining soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 results in the greatest availability of macro- and secondarynutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and sulfur. In contrast to fertilizer prices, lime cost has remained about the same. If your soil test indicated that you need, it will be the best buy you can make at the current time.

Hay and silage remove large quantities of nutrients. In contrast to grazing, making hay or silage removes large quantities of nutrients. These nutrients must be COW COUNTRY •

replaced to maintain soil fertility, and stand health and productivity. Each ton of hay that is removed from a field takes with it approximately 15 lb of phosphate and 50 lb potash. In a good year, a tall fescue-clover mix may yield 4 tons per acre and remove 60 lb phosphate and 200 lb of potash (Table 2).

Soil testing provides a starting point to work from. Soil testing is always important, but when fertilizer prices are high it is a critical management tool. We cannot look at a soil and tell how much lime and fertilizer is needed.

Applying fertilizer and lime without a soil test is simply guessing and could

Overseeding legumes is not the same as applying commercial nitrogen fertilizer.

Mixed stands of grasses and legumes may yield as much or more than grass monocultures fertilized with moderate rates of nitrogen, but a significant proportion of that yield will be made up of the legumes. In other words, legumes not

only increase grass growth by supplying nitrogen, but also compensate for lower grass production.

Improved legumes require good soil fertility to be productive and persistent.

Improved legumes such as red and white clover and alfalfa require relatively high soil fertility and pH’s above 6.0 to be productive. This means that an initial investment in potash, phosphorus, and lime must be made. These applications need to be based on a recent soil test.

Grazing Management The role of grazing management in building stronger nutrient cycles in pastures is often discounted. However, its impact on the establishment and maintenance of strong nutrient cycles in pastures cannot be understated.

Adopting rotational stocking increases pasture productivity, reduces hay feeding, improves nutrient distribution, protects the soil from erosion and increases rainfall infiltration.

Grazing animals will redistribute nutrients in pastures. Overtime grazing animals can move nutrients from one area of the pasture to another through urine and dung deposition. This problem is the worst in large continuously grazed pastures where animals go out and graze then come back to shade and water areas where they urinate and defecate, thereby increasing the nutrient concentrations in these areas (Figure 3).

Increasing stocking density improves nutrient distribution.

Subdividing pastures and utilizing rotational stocking results in a more uniform deposition of urine and dung within a grazing system.

Research conducted at the University of Missouri found that under continuous stocking it would take more than 25 years for a dung pile to be deposited in every square yard of the pasture compared with 8 years for a pasture that was rotated on a 14-day schedule. Rotating on a 2 and 4-day schedule resulted in a dung pile being deposited in every square yard of pasture in 2 and 4.5 years, respectively.

I truly hope that everyone appreciates the contributions of the poor graduate student who worked on this project!

Healthy pastures are more efficient at harvesting rainfall and using nutrients.

Allowing pastures to rest between grazing events helps to maintain a healthy and vigorous sod with a strong root system.

Buying and feeding hay and concentrates imports nutrients into grazing systems.

Each ton of hay contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium along with organic matter (Table 1). At today’s fertilizer prices these nutrients are worth than $35 per ton of hay. Buying hay and feeding it on your worst paddocks may be a cost effective way to build fertility in your grazing system over time. However, it is important to realize that this approach will be much slower than applying commercially available fertilizer or

poultry litter.

Hay feeding can be used to redistribute nutrients within a grazing system. Hay can be produced on paddocks or in fields that contain high levels of nutrients and then fed in areas that are low in fertility.

Overtime nutrients can be transferred from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.

Closing Thoughts I often think of soil as a bank for nutrients. In times when fertilizer prices are low, we can build up the balance in our account and then draw it down when prices are high. They key to making this work is active monitoring of soil nutrient maintaining soil test levels in the high range and our pH above 6.0.

UK TO HOST FENCING SCHOOLS IN MAY Katie Pratt, University of Kentucky The University of Kentucky will host two regional fencing schools this spring to help livestock producers learn the newest fencing techniques and sound fence construction.

The 2021 spring schools will occur May 11 at the Christian County Extension office in Hopkinsville and May 13 at the Daviess County Extension office in Owensboro.

The schools begin at 7:30 a.m. CDT and conclude at 4:30 p.m. CDT. Chris Teutsch, UK forage extension specialist, started these one-day events in 2018 in Kentucky to help producers improve their herd management.

“If you have ever driven around the countryside, there are a lot of fences but not a lot of well-constructed ones,” said

Teutsch, extension associate professor in the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. “One of the goals of this school is to help people get the basics of fencing down. That way they can build a strong, durable fence that will last 25 or 30 years, or if they decide to hire a contractor to build it for them, they will know what a well-constructed fence looks like.”

UK specialists and fencing industry experts will use a mixture of classroom instruction and hands-on demonstrations to teach producers the basics of a well-built fence. An added bonus of the school is that the techniques producers learn can help them qualify for cost-share dollars from the Natural Resources Conservation Service for new

Each school is limited to 30 participants, and the cost is $30 per person. This cost covers lunch, a fencing notebook and safety gear. CCQA is the first, collaborative educational tool that provides guidelines for calf raisers. The CCQA program is a joint initiative led by NCBA’s Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program, funded by the Beef Checkoff, and the National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) program, managed by the National Milk Producer’s Federation (NMPF) with support from the Dairy Calf and Heifer Association, and the Beef Checkofffunded Veal Quality Assurance (VQA) program.

MAXIMIZING VALUE: 2021 SPRING APPLICATION OF BROILER LITTER FOR GRAIN CROP PRODUCTION Jordan Shockley

Spring is here and grain producers across the state are gearing up for planting. One of the many decisions producers have to make before planting is in regard to their nutrient management plan. Broiler litter provides a great opportunity as a complete fertilizer and is being produced and used throughout the state in grain production.

However, the value of broiler litter can vary greatly depending on the management practices, nutrient content of the litter, soil test data and commercial fertilizer prices.

Spring application of broiler litter maximizes plant-available nitrogen resulting in the maximum economic value of broiler litter. As mentioned in previous issues, the average nutrient content of a ton of broiler litter in Kentucky (as received) is 50 lbs of nitrogen, 56 lbs of phosphorous, and 47 lbs of potassium. In addition to three macronutrients, broiler litter contains other beneficial elements such as micronutrients (zinc and 28

copper), other secondary macronutrients (calcium, magnesium, and sulfur), and organic matter which are difficult to quantify in value. For this analysis, the three primary macronutrients (N, P2O5, and K2O) will be used to determine the value of broiler litter. If your soil test recommendations supported the application of broiler litter and you applied or plan on applying this spring, that is equivalent to 40% commercial nitrogen, 80% commercial phosphorous and 100% commercial potassium per ton of broiler litter (as received). Therefore, the nutrients that would be available to the crop from an average ton of broiler litter in Kentucky would be 20 lbs of nitrogen, 45 lbs of phosphorous, and 47 lbs of potassium. With current fertilizer prices of $306/ton for UAN 32 ($0.48/ lb N), $598/ton for DAP ($0.46/lb P2O5) and $393/ton for potash ($0.33/ lb K2O), the average expected value of broiler litter is $48/ton. vary day to day depending on the price of commercial fertilizer. In addition, this is using the average nutrient content of broiler litter. Each load of broiler litter can vary in nutrient content and should be measured to include into the overall nutrient management plan and supplemented with commercial fertilizer as needed.

Incorporating (disking or rain) broiler litter after application this spring can increase the commercial nitrogen equivalent by reducing nitrogen loss into the air by ammonia volatilization but depends on the time between incorporation and application. Rainfall of ½ inch can reduce loss by moving nitrogen through the soil but too much rainfall can cause runoff or leaching.

If incorporated 2 days or less after application, commercial nitrogen equivalent increases to 60% resulting in an increase in the value of broiler litter to $52/ton. Commercial nitrogen M AY 2 0 2 1

equivalents decreases 5% for every 2 days incorporation is delayed due to ammonia volatilization (3-4 days = 55% commercial N equivalent & $51/ton value; 5-6 days = 50% commercial N equivalent $50/ton value). If you wait over 7 days, the value of broiler litter is similar to if you did not incorporate it ($48/ton). If you are in a no-till system and applying broiler litter, it is not recommended to incorporate broiler litter just to gain the extra value.

Since the value of broiler litter is dynamic and always changing, a decision tool is available so grain producers can enter soil test data, nutrient content of measured litter, commercial fertilizer prices, and management practices to determine the value of broiler litter. ADDITIONAL PANDEMIC ASSISTANCE FOR FARMERS Will Snell and Kenny Burdine On March 24th, U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack introduced USDA’s Pandemic Assistance for Producers that will be distributing more than $12 billion to assist agricultural producers and other agricultural businesses impacted by the Coronavirus. As a review, Congress passed an additional COVID-19 stimulus package (Consolidated Appropriations Act) last December providing supplementary funding for crop and livestock producers who had received financial assistance from the first two rounds of Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) payments (i.e., CFAP 1 and CFAP 2). New programs were also included to compensate contract growers and producers who had to depopulate animals who were not eligible for the first two CFAP payments. On Jan. 15, 2021 the outgoing Trump administration announced that it would be moving forward with programs for selected provisions of the December 2020 COVID-19 relief bill, but upon entering office, the Biden administration immediately announced they would be reviewing these payments and programs before issuing guidelines. Following the review, the announcement on March 24th outlined USDA’s plan to distribute these funds and introduce new programs which included the following: • Reopen Coronavirus Food Assistance Program 2 (CFAP 2) for at least 60 days beginning on April 5, 2021 in an attempt to identify eligible producers (focusing on socially disadvantaged producers) who did not apply for CFAP 2 and for producers who want to modify their CFAP 2 applications.

• Corn, soybean, wheat, sorghum, hemp, alfalfa hay, and other row crops (click here for the entire list) along with certain fruit, vegetable and other specialty crops (click here for the entire list) will be eligible

for an additional $20 per acre payment. Payments will be based on 2020 acres and for producers who submitted an accepted CFAP 2 application. Eligible specialty and row crop producers do not need to submit a new CFAP 2 application to receive the latest round of payments. ($4.5 billion) • Cattle producers will be receiving an increase in CFAP 1 payment rates based on the number of cattle in inventory between April 16, 2020, to May 14, 2020 ($1.1 billion). Cattle producers with approved CFAP 1 applications do not need to reapply as they will automatically receive these payments. The additional payment rates are:

• Tobacco was eligible for CFAP 2, but similar to contract livestock producers, USDA states that “payments for tobacco producers are currently on hold and are likely to require modifications to the regulation as part of a broader evaluation. FSA will continue to accept applications from interested contract growers during this evaluation period.”

• Additional funding to support Specialty Crop Block Grants, Farmers Opportunities Training and Outreach Programs and the Local Agricultural Marketing Program ($500 Million).

FEBRUARY RED MEAT EXPORTS BELOW LAST YEAR, BUT 2021 OUTLOOK REMAINS STRONG February exports of U.S. beef and pork remained below the rapid pace established in early 2020, according to data released

by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). However, exports were consistent with USMEF’s February projections and the federation still expects 2021 beef exports to increase substantially year-over-year, while pork exports are projected to narrowly surpass the 2020 record.

Beef exports totaled 103,493 metric tons (mt) in February, down 8% from a year ago, valued at $669.5 million (down 2%). This was due mainly to a decline in variety meat exports, as beef muscle cuts were steady with last year in value at $597.9 million on a volume of 82,530 mt (down 3%). Through February, beef exports were 5% below last year’s pace at 208,540 mt, valued at $1.32 billion (down 2%). Beef muscle cut exports were down 1% to 163,928 mt and steady in value at

$1.18 billion. Beef exports to South Korea are off to a very strong start in 2021 and demand for U.S. beef continues to grow in China, capitalizing on access gains achieved in the U.S.-China Phase One Economic and Trade Agreement.

February pork exports were down 12% from a year ago at 239,240 mt, valued at $629.4 million (down 13%). For muscle cuts only, exports fell by the same percentages to 203,526 mt valued at $548 million. Through February, pork exports were 11% below last year’s pace at 487,896 mt, valued at $1.27 billion (down 13%). Pork muscle cut exports were also down 11% to 411,760 mt, valued at $1.1 billion (down 14%).

February pork exports set new records in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica and were very strong to the Philippines and Colombia.

As anticipated, pork exports to China/ Hong Kong trended lower than the

enormous volumes shipped in 2020 but the region continues to be the largest destination for U.S. pork.

Fueled by larger variety meat shipments to Mexico, Canada and Hong Kong, February exports of U.S. lamb increased 142% from a year ago to 1,152 mt, with value up 19% to $1.6 million. Through February, lamb exports were up 52% from a year ago to 2,179 mt but value fell 19% to $2.8 million.

“While February exports were in line with expectations, the results don’t fully reflect global demand for U.S. red meat,” said Dan Halstrom, USMEF president and CEO. “Logistical challenges, including congestion at some U.S. ports, are still a significant headwind and tight labor supplies at the plant level continue to impact export volumes for certain products - including some variety meat items and labor-intensive muscle cuts.”

Halstrom notes that the flow of exports through U.S. ports is showing some gradual improvement as COVIDimpacted crews move closer to full strength, but remains a serious concern for the U.S. agricultural sector.

“USMEF greatly appreciates the members of Congress and ag industry representatives who have worked to bring more attention to this situation, and the efforts of maritime regulators to address shipping practices,” he said.

Export demand has remained solid despite logistical challenges and other pandemic-related obstacles. Continued international demand, along with robust domestic business, contributed to stronger cutout values in the first quarter, which were up an average of 27% yearover-year for pork (nearly $90/cwt) and 4% for Choice beef ($224/cwt).

CAIP BULL COST-SHARE CHANGES Dr. Darrh Bullock, Extension Professor, Beef Genetics, University of Kentucky Several changes have been made to the 2021 CAIP Beef Bull Cost-share Program and most involve the new requirement of bulls being genomically tested or have a Calving Ease EPD of .30 or greater. It is important to understand which genomics test is appropriate to qualify the bull.

It must be a genomics test that can be used to compute Genomically Enhanced EPDs. If seedstock producers are not familiar with genomics testing they should consult with their respective breed association or one of the genomics testing companies (information below). Breeds that do not currently offer Genomically Enhanced EPDs are exempt until 2023 when all breeds will be required to have

them. If you are purchasing a bull, the easiest way to determine if the bull will qualify is to ensure that his Calving Ease (Direct) EPD is .30 or greater. If he has Genomically Enhanced EPDs then this accuracy value will be .30 or greater. Of course, the bull must also meet the specific EPD requirements for the category of bull you are seeking. The other major change to the guidelines is that there are now only four categories of bulls to choose from: Heifer Acceptable, Terminal Sire, Balanced Trait and Carcass Merit. The Low Maintenance and High Productivity categories have been eliminated. Remember, it is important to determine what type of bull best fits your

needs and then buy a bull that qualifies within that category. Just because a bull qualifies for a category does not mean this is the right bull for you. For example, a Heifer Acceptable bull may not provide the heavy weaning weight calves that you desire or the appropriate level of milk you want in your replacement heifers. My advice is to read the document “Beef Sire Selection for Cattle Genetic Improvement Program” (https://agpolicy.ky.gov/ funds/Documents/caip_epd-standards. pdf) which should help navigate you to the right bull category and hopefully the bull to best fit your needs.

In a recent webinar produced by the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association and available on its YouTube channel at: https://youtu.be/quHkZq78M48, we explored many ways that farmers can use insurance to protect their property, equipment, livestock, crops, and people on the farm. Although we covered some of the most common kinds of insurance, like property, land, and automobile coverage, an important part of the presentation was the discussion about less traditional insurance options that might provide farmers the particular type and amount of coverage they need.

For example, you may be able to protect equipment used on your property through your property insurance or farm and ranch insurance policy. If you only use your equipment on one piece of property that you own, that type of coverage might be enough. However, if you (even occasionally) have to transport equipment from one property to another or temporarily park equipment away from the farm, you may need a different type of coverage.

That’s because property insurance and farm and ranch insurance, even those policies that specifically cover equipment, frequently only protect equipment from damage that occurs on your property. If you are towing equipment and get into a wreck or park your equipment away from the farm and it is stolen, a regular property or farm and ranch policy may not pay for the damage or loss. Luckily, “Inland

Marine” property insurance is available and it typically covers damage, lost, or stolen equipment anywhere. The specifics about what types of equipment and events are covered by an Inland Marine policy, like all insurance policies, depends on the specific terms of your agreement.

UK AND PURDUE SEEKING CALVES LOST TO OR INJURED BY BLACK VULTURES Aimee Nielson, University of Kentucky -- It’s not a surprise to seasoned cattle producers that black vultures will prey on newborn calves. The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment is teaming up with Purdue University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services and the Denis H. Heeke Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in southern Indiana to study the problem.

Assistant professor of wildlife management Matthew Springer is leading the efforts at UK. The group is requesting that producers donate calves or other livestock to the research effort, if they believe the animal was lost to black vultures.

“The goal of this project is to determine the characteristics of an animal killed by a black vulture versus one that is just scavenged upon,” Springer said.

“This research should help inform any indemnity loss applications through the USDA Farm Service Agency.”

Springer said the group is prioritizing animals that producers saw being attacked. Someone from UK will pick up the animals and take them to the Heeke lab for examination of injuries and necropsy. Researchers will catalog the results to determine the features of a vulture attack.

“Given the extensive nature of the necropsy, the carcasses need to be in good shape and preferably found within 24 hours of the attack,” Springer said.

Researchers are also seeking black vulture nest sites throughout Kentucky as part of a larger black vulture research effort in the Southeast United States. The larger project is a collaboration with the Murray State COW COUNTRY •

University Biology Department and USDA Wildlife Services “Our goal with the larger study is to better understand the nesting behavior and survival of black vulture nests as well as fledgling movement and survival rates,” Springer said. “The research fits into a larger overall push by USDA Wildlife Services to better understand black vulture populations and behaviors.”

Springer said the overall goals of these efforts are to improve understanding of the black vulture and to identify future management strategies to help overcome vulture-related damages.

“This project should help us understand the reasons for the increase in black vulture populations and help minimize human-vulture conflicts in the future,” he said. “If you know of a nest site and would be willing to allow us access to monitor it, please contact us.”

The team will monitor nests using trail cameras to observe nesting behavior and any predation events until chicks leave the nest. The team will briefly visit nest sites every 10-14 days to collect the memory card and check the nesting status. They will attach GPS transmitters to a subset of fledglings when they reach the necessary size and age later in the summer.

“We would be especially grateful if you could report nests as soon as you become aware of them, as we are currently within the vulture breeding season,” Springer said.

Lacefield has been a board member for the Kentucky Retail Federation, Kentucky Corn Growers, Kentucky FFA Foundation, and the Kentucky Ag Leadership Program. DRUG DERIVED FROM KENTUCKY-GROWN PLANT SHOWS PROMISE FOR OVARIAN CANCER TREATMENT A new study from University of Kentucky Markey Cancer researchers shows that Artemisia annua, a plant that has been traditionally used for its anti-malaria components, shows promise in treating ovarian cancer.

growing substantial quantities of Artemisia annua, meaning the Commonwealth could become a new epicenter for growing the plant worldwide. The plant’s growth process is similar to that of tobacco, potentially giving Kentucky’s tobacco farmers a new cash crop to supplement their incomes.

The study, recently published in Diagnostics, demonstrates artesunate, synthesized from Artemisia annua, kills ovarian cancer cells in multiple preclinical model systems.

Despite accounting for only 1.3% of all new cancer cases, 2.3% of cancer deaths in 2021 are predicted to be caused by ovarian cancer. The current standard of care for advanced ovarian cancer, which hasn’t changed since 2003, is the use of two chemotherapy agents: carboplatin and paclitaxel.

In this study, the researchers determined that artesunate, both alone and in

combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel, has anticancer activity at concentrations that are achievable in the clinic, which support the further clinical development of this strategy.

“Artesunate is historically used as an antimalarial but with emerging evidence, it demonstrates its anti-cancer activity,” said

Jill Kolesar, PharmD, professor in the UK College of Pharmacy and administrative director of Markey’s Precision Medicine Clinic. “This supports bringing it into the clinic and we hope to have positive outcomes for these patients, based on our preclinical data.”

BEEF CHECKOFF: WHO’S WHO & HOW IT WORKS Greg Hanes, CEO, Cattlemen’s Beef Board

Beef. It seems like the kind of commodity that would be simple, straightforward, easy to understand. Except…it’s not. The industry’s long history of organizational splits, reinventions, mergers and aliases — along with the fact that many association names sound similar — is enough to make anybody’s head spin.

Even folks from other commodities agree that the beef world is complex, and so is its Checkoff.

For three-and-a-half decades the Beef Checkoff has existed to promote beef, but unless you are actively engaged in the program, you may not fully understand its management and oversight. Those duties are clearly assigned to the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion & Research Board (aka, Cattlemen’s Beef Board/CBB) by the Beef Promotion and Research Act. Even with completely separate boards, staffs and offices, two common misperceptions remain: the belief that the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) oversees the Checkoff — and that CBB and NCBA are one and the same. Nothing could be further from the truth.

BACKGROUND The 1985 Farm Bill created the CBB to administer the Beef Checkoff program.

Through the dollar-a-head assessment on 36

the sale of all cattle and equivalent amount on imported beef and beef products, each year the CBB funds promotion, research and education proposals presented to the Beef Promotion Operating Committee (BPOC) by established, national, nonprofit beef or cattle industry-governed organizations. Once a proposal is approved by the BPOC, the organization becomes a Checkoff “contractor” and conducts the work according to guidelines and program evaluations that ensure proposal objectives are met.

ANSWERING THE BIG QUESTION By law, absolutely no Checkoff funds can be used for policy or lobbying efforts. That said, the Beef Checkoff’s largest contractor, NCBA, does have a policy division. So, how does that work?

Through closely monitored processes and a “firewall” that keeps policy work and Checkoff-funded work separate.

As a trade association representing U.S. cattle producers, NCBA is like a coin with two sides. One side, the Policy Division, works to advance the political interests of its members. Any discussion of NCBA and policy is valid, but that’s NCBA’s Policy Division at play and has nothing to do with the CBB or Checkoff.

The other side of NCBA is qualified to contract with the BPOC to conduct Checkoff promotion, research and education work as an established, national, non-profit beef or cattle industry governed organization. To be clear, it is not the organization’s policy side that competes in this arena.

Just like any other Checkoff contractor, NCBA must adhere to all rules and processes, and its contract work is managed by the CBB. Each year, it must submit Authorization Requests (program proposals) that fully outline the project work it wants to do. It must file progress reports, quarterly oversight evaluations and regular reviews. It can only receive Checkoff dollars on a costrecovery basis, which means it pays expenses up front and is only reimbursed after the CBB reviews invoices and documentation proving the money was spent appropriately and within the parameters of the Authorization Request. A dedicated compliance officer ensures all provisions of the Act and the Order are followed, that the “firewall” is maintained and that no Checkoff funds are used for policy or lobbying.

Grain prices are projected to remain high this year. While this boon to crop producers is putting pressure on livestock feeders, the upswing presents an opportunity for savvy cattle grazers.

• Evaluate last year’s successes and challenges and adjust grazing plans accordingly.

• Scout early and often. Catch small problems, like thistle patches, before they become larger headaches.

• Don’t forget soil fertility. Fertilizing according to soil test and experience can increase forage quality.

• Control broadleaf weeds early to increase grass production and utilization.

• Go gentle on drought-stressed areas.

Overgrazing through over stocking and grazing length will prolong drought recovery.

“Annual and biennial broadleaf weeds can green up even before pasture grasses.

Once growing, weeds steal moisture, nutrients and sunlight,” Clark said.

“Catching weeds early gives pasture grasses a competitive advantage.”

Early in the season means when weeds are small and growing. They’re easier to cover and control, and they haven’t robbed much from the grass yet. If weather or spring workloads conspire against early spraying, treatments — and their forage-boosting benefits — can continue into summer. Just remember to adjust herbicide rates accordingly, Clark said.

Using a residual product, such as DuraCor® herbicide, early in the season stops that first weed flush while providing control of those that germinate later. This extended control will help stop weeds throughout the season, preserving moisture and allowing grasses to get a head start on the weeds.

“Remember: Every day grazed is money in your pocket,” Clark said. “That rings especially true this grazing season.”

Maximizing and properly manage grazed forages can help producers put on more, lower-cost gains.

THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF SUBMITTING A DEAD ANIMAL FOR N E C RO P SY TO A V E T E R I N A RY D I AG N O ST I C L A B O RATO RY MICHELLE ARNOLD DVM-Ruminant Extension Veterinarian, University of Kentucky

Sickness and death loss of farm animals is an unavoidable consequence of owning them. Whether it is one animal that dies unexpectedly or multiple animals developing symptoms of disease over a short span of time, most producers want to know the reason, the best effective treatment and how to prevent it. The local veterinarian should be the first person contacted to examine any sick animals and determine an appropriate treatment. The earlier the veterinarian is contacted in the disease process, the better the chance of instituting an effective therapy. However, in cases of sudden death or when disease appears to be spreading or in cases where treatment is ineffective, a veterinary diagnostic laboratory can help make a diagnosis and assist in development of a plan for treatment and control based on test results. The UK Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Lexington (Web: http:// vdl.uky.edu) and the Breathitt Veterinary Center in Hopkinsville (Web: https:// breathitt.murraystate.edu/ ) are both full service laboratories serving the veterinarians and producers across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Their websites contain complete, up-to-date access to all services offered as well as hours of operation, location, forms, and all other pertinent information. To save valuable time and money, if there are any questions, call the laboratory ahead of time. A phone call to the lab prior to leaving the farm is never a bad idea to avoid any unforeseen circumstances.

Much useful information about an individual animal’s death and overall health issues in the herd can be gleaned from a necropsy (the animal equivalent of a human “autopsy”). During the necropsy, the veterinary pathologist will first open the animal and look for any visible abnormalities. This is called a “gross necropsy” and often gives an initial indication of the cause of death. Samples are then taken from all organ systems as 38

well as blood and other bodily fluids and submitted to various laboratory sections for specific testing. In addition, sections of each organ (liver, lung, heart, kidney, brain, etc.) are cut into thin slices, processed and placed on glass slides for examination under the microscope. It is under the scope, at the cellular level, that pathologists most often confirm the cause of death by recognizing the characteristic patterns of tissue damage resulting from a certain disease. However, it is important to understand that autolysis (rotting) begins immediately after death and progresses rapidly, especially in hot weather. Rotten tissues make

interpretation of tests and other findings very difficult if not impossible. Do bring dead animals to the lab within 24 hours after death, the sooner the better, for the best chance at an accurate diagnosis.

Don’t bring live animals to the lab because euthanasia services are not offered. If euthanasia is performed prior to submission, don’t damage the brain if the animal has symptoms of rabies or other neurologic problem. Don’t show up at the lab after-hours with a dead animal without prior approval because there is no guarantee someone will be available to help unload and place the animal in the cooler. If timely submission to a

diagnostic laboratory is not possible, the herd veterinarian can perform a “field” necropsy and take the necessary samples to send to the lab. Once the pathologist receives test results and looks at the slides, the pieces come together like a puzzle to arrive at a diagnosis. A plan can then be formulated with the producer and veterinarian to control and hopefully prevent the problem in the future.

At the diagnostic laboratory, the tests ordered are based on initial necropsy findings and the “history” from the producer submitted with the dead animal. Simply put, the more information available about this animal

and the herd, the easier and faster it is to narrow down the list of possibilities. Try to compile a complete “history” which is simply a snapshot of what the situation is on the farm, making sure to note anything out of the ordinary. Pictures and videos are worth a thousand words and can easily be added to the history by the staff at the laboratory. The answers to the following questions will often yield useful information: 1. A full description of this animal (breed, age, sex). If female, was she pregnant and did she have a calf on her? Was this animal raised on the farm or purchased?

If purchased, when and where? Also, a description of the herd. How many cattle on the farm, how many in the group this animal came from and how many deaths have occurred in that group over what period of time?

2. If sick when found, what symptoms were observed? Any pictures or videos taken? Was a vet contacted and/or treatment attempted? If found dead, when was the last time you saw the animal alive? Any signs of struggle at the time of death?

3. When did this problem first begin?

Have you ever had a similar problem on the farm? Are any other cattle showing signs of illness now?

4. Vaccination history-what was given most recently and when?

5. Summarize the diet currently being fed. Include what type of feed (grain) if offered and how much is consumed, forage available (hay/pasture/silage/ baleage), and any tubs, trace mineral or salt available. Bring any feed tags or take pictures of labels from the bag. It is especially important to note any recent changes to the diet and when the changes were made. For example, have the cattle been without salt or mineral and were just given a new bag? Have they just rotated onto a new pasture? Is water source a pond, creek or stock tank? If it is a tank, is it city water, well water or pond/ creek water? If a feed, forage or waterrelated problem is suspected, do bring samples of those, too. However, don’t expect tests to be performed on every sample submitted unless the preliminary findings are pointing in that direction.

6. Note when any new additions joined the herd, including purchased replacement females, bulls, or sale barn animals. Also note if any animals have

been on the show circuit and, if so, when they returned to the farm.

7. Is there recent history of contact with other animals? Any fenceline contact with neighbors’ animals? Are there cats, dogs, rats, and/or wildlife in contact with your herd or their feed?

8. Any recent bad weather such as flooding, high winds causing down trees, lightning storms?

9. Are there any junk piles, burn piles, compost piles, weed or yard trimmings in the pasture? Any sheds or old barns accessible to the herd? Are their woods available for the cattle to run in? Recent pesticide or herbicide use? Is there a road next to the farm where trash could be thrown over the fence?

Once the animal is submitted, don’t expect answers immediately.

Some diseases are easily recognized but others are more challenging. Interim test results are sent from the lab periodically until a final report is issued. It can take as long as 2 weeks to generate the final report or even longer if any special tests were sent to outside laboratories but most cases are finished quickly. Questions about the final report can be addressed by the herd veterinarian or by the faculty and staff at the diagnostic laboratory.

It is important to understand that no veterinary diagnostic laboratory is 100% successful at figuring out every cause of death. To utilize a veterinary diagnostic lab most effectively, do come with fresh samples, pictures or videos, and plenty of information. By far, the most important factor for a successful diagnosis is minimizing the degree of autolysis (rotting) that takes place before submission. Getting the dead animal to the lab as soon as it is found or having a veterinarian euthanize an animal that is close to death and bringing it straight to the lab will markedly increase the effectiveness of testing. In cases of multiple death loss, do send more than one animal as it increases the odds of finding the cause and to ensure they actually died from the same problem.

In cases where a diagnosis is not found, don’t consider it a waste of time and money because many diseases may be ruled out with negative test results.

However, rotten animals or those that have been scavenged are much more difficult to work with and often give disappointing answers.

Central Kentucky Ag Credit has announced a record $5.8 million in patronage dividends based on 2020 earnings that will be distributed by mail to eligible member-borrowers in early April.

As owners of their cooperative, Central Kentucky Ag Credit customers share in the financial success of the Association through patronage distributions.

This marks the 24th consecutive year Ag Credit has returned a portion of its earnings to memberborrowers, bringing its cumulative distribution to $41 million.

Now, more than ever, farmers depend on the financial stability of a well-run cooperative. Patronage dividends are often used by member-borrowers to reinvest in their operations, families and rural communities.

“In challenging times like these, we’re even more committed to ensuring that our member-borrowers can share in our ongoing financial success,” said Central Kentucky Ag Credit President and CEO Jim Caldwell. “We strive to provide the consistency that farmers in our region depend on, and we understand that these distributions strengthen our agricultural economy and the communities we proudly serve.”

At the end of each year, the Central Kentucky Ag Credit board determines the level of patronage distribution based on financial performance and future capital needs. Then it distributes the remainder as patronage dividends to owner-customers, as determined by their loan activity level during the prior year.

Ag Credit has served the Central Kentucky region since 1934 as a member of the Farm Credit System.

The financial cooperative provides lending services through seven full-service offices in the Bluegrass.

CONSIDER YOUR CUT While classics, such as the Strip Steak and Ribeye, can be an easy go-to, there are endless options when it comes to cuts of beef. Why not try taking your grilling game up a notch with a cut you might not be as familiar with, like a juicy Flat Iron or a lean, flavorful Flank Steak.

ELEVATE THOSE FLAVORS Marinades and rubs are a great way to take beef to the next level with minimal effort. To add extra flavor, tender cuts can be marinated for as little as 15 minutes or as long as two hours. For less tender cuts, marinating for at least six hours, but not more than 24 hours, will do the trick.

LOCAL FOODIE NAMED 2021 DERBY BURGER CHAMPION WITH HIS GRILLED CHEESE INSPIRED RECIPE Aimee Boyd , Kentucky Derby Festival

Due to restrictions surrounding COVID-19, the 2021 competition was held completely online, instead of hosting an in-person cook-off. Over the last few weeks, more than 11,000 beef lovers have voted online to help pick the Top 8 semi-finalists, Top 4 finalists and the winning burger.

Capps’ winning burger recipe will be featured inside Louisville-area Kroger stores from April 21st through Derby weekend. Recipe cards will be available, as well as a showcase of ingredients for shoppers to purchase to make their own Derby Burgers.

2021 DERBY BURGER® CHALLENGE WINNER:

BOURBON BLUEBERRY & BRIE BACON CHEESEBURGER Created by: Brian Capps (Louisville, Kentucky)

Ingredients: 1 pound Kentucky Cattlemen’s Ground Beef • 4 slices cooked thick cut bacon, halved • 1 wheel of brie cheese, rind removed, sliced ¼ inch thick • 1 pint fresh blueberries • 1 lemon, halved • 1/8 cup white sugar • 2 tsp. cornstarch • 1 1/2 tsp. bourbon • 2 brioche buns • 2 Tbsp. salted butter • Arugula • 1/4 tsp. coarse kosher salt • 1/4 tsp. coarse black pepper Cooking: • Form ground beef into two patties that are slightly larger than your buns, set aside. Preheat a cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add butter and sliced buns, cook until golden brown, set aside.

• Salt & pepper both sides of burger patty, cook over medium heat in cast iron skillet. Cook until internal temperature reaches 160°F degrees, turn off heat add cheese and cover with lid until melted. Remove to a plate to rest.

• Add blueberries to small pot, add sugar, and juice from half of a lemon, cook on med/low heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mix cornstarch with just enough water to become a slurry. Slowly add just enough slurry to thicken blueberry mixture slightly. Remove mixture from the heat and stir in the Bourbon.

• Build burger: Place bottom bun down, add burger patty with brie cheese, bacon and pour some blueberry sauce over bacon until it runs off, add arugula and top bun.

Brian Capps of Louisville, KY, has been crowned the 2021 Derby Burger Champion in the 10th Annual Derby Burger Challenge, sponsored by Kentucky Beef Council and coordinated by the Kentucky Derby Festival. Capps’ recipe for his “Bourbon Blueberry & Brie Bacon Cheeseburger” was selected as the overall winner after two rounds of online voting.

Capps’ burger, made with 100% Kentucky Cattlemen’s ground beef is packed with flavor. The patty is topped with brie, thick-cut bacon, a blueberry bourbon sauce and arugula - all on a brioche bun. This is Capps second time entering the annual burger competition.

Capps says his specialty is burgers, and the inspiration for this winning recipe came from a special grilled cheese.

“I make my wife a blueberry and brie grilled cheese, which is her favorite thing in the world. She asked me to turn it into a burger and submit it for the challenge.

So, I made the burger,” said Capps.

The Festival received dozens of submissions for the annual competition.

Other finalists this year included Charli McIlvain of Lexington with the Hall’s Original Beer Cheese “Dirty” Burger, Dallas McGarity of Louisville with the Double Smashburger on Brioche Bun with Tasty Pickles and Timothy Armistead of Louisville with the Elote (Mexican Corn) Burger.

BEEF MONTH

GRILLED STEAK CHARCUTERIE BOARD Ingredients: 2-3 cuts of beef • 2-3 grilled or roasted vegetables • 2 types of cheese • 2-3 sauces or toppings • Grilled or fresh fruit (optional) Fresh herbs or garnish (optional) Corn Relish: 1 cup frozen corn, thawed • 1/2 cup chopped seeded tomatoes • 1/2 cup chopped seeded cucumber • 3 tablespoons thinly sliced green onions • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/4 teaspoon salt Combine all ingredients in medium bowl. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour to allow flavors to blend. Serve cold. Cook’s Tip: You may use cooked fresh corn instead of frozen corn; omit sugar when using fresh corn. Corn relish may be prepared a day ahead.

Peach Compote: 1 cup diced peaches, fresh or frozen • 1 cup diced sweet onion • 1 cup Budweiser beer • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary Heat large skillet over medium heat until hot. Add peaches and onion; cook and stir until lightly browned about 5 minutes. Add beer, brown sugar and rosemary; bring to a boil. Cook until peaches and onion are soft and liquid is almost gone, 13 to 15 minutes; keep warm until served

Ingredients: 2 boneless strip steaks • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar • 1/4 cup olive oil • 1 large clove garlic, minced • Salt and pepper • 2 teaspoons garlic-pepper seasoning, divided • 1 medium red onion, cut into 12 wedges • 1 medium yellow squash, cut lengthwise in half • 1 medium zucchini, cut lengthwise in half • 8 cups mixed salad greens Cooking: • Bring vinegar to a boil in small saucepan. Reduce heat; simmer 3 minutes or until reduced by half. Whisk vinegar, oil, garlic, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper in small bowl until blended. Set aside.

• Press 1 teaspoon garlic-pepper seasoning evenly onto boneleess strip steaks.

• Soak two 10-inch bamboo skewers in water 10 minutes; drain. Thread onion wedges onto skewers. Brush onions and cut sides of squash with oil; sprinkle with remaining teaspoon garlic-pepper seasoning.

2 cloves garlic • 1/2 cup packed fresh cilantro • 1/2 cup packed fresh parsley • 1/4 cup olive oil • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated lemon peel • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper

• Place steaks on grid over medium, ash-covered coals; arrange vegetables around steaks. Grill steaks, covered, 11 to 14 minutes (over medium heat on preheated gas grill, 11 to 15 minutes) for medium rare (145°F) to medium doneness (160°F), turning occasionally. Grill squash 8 to 12 minutes (7 to 11 minutes for gas) and onions 12 to 15 minutes (13 to 16 minutes for gas) or until tender, turning occasionally.

Place garlic in food processor container. Cover; process until finely chopped. Add remaining sauce ingredients. Cover; process until well blended. Remove and refrigerate for serving.

• Cut squash into 3/4-inch pieces. Arrange squash and onions over greens. Carve steaks into slices; season with salt and pepper, as desired. Arrange over salad.

Drizzle vinaigrette over salad; toss.

MAY 28th IS NATIONAL BEEF BURGER DAY Just as important as selecting a scrumptious burger recipe is grilling that big beef patty to perfection! The following tips from the chefs at Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner, can help ensure a flawlessly grilled burger every time: •

Work with the Right Ratios: To ensure your burger isn’t all bun, form your patty slightly larger than your bun to account for shrinkage.

•

Keep it Uniform: Before hitting the grill, put an indentation in the center of your patty so it cooks flat and prevents swelling in the middle.

•

Patience Pays Off: Avoid the temptation of flipping burgers too early. Wait until the burger releases from the grill and only flip once.

•

Keep it Hot: Always use a thermometer and make sure your burger is cooked to a safe and savory internal temperature of 160ºF. Celebrate with beef burgers! It’s powerful! The majority of people go to their friends and family for recommendations. And now days one person can influence hundreds of people with just one click. That’s why KBC invests check-off dollars in influence(r) marketing. Cross-collaboration is key!

Influence(r) marketing takes time and requires building relationships with not only the influencers, but also with the audience. So, how is KBC doing this?

First, we focus on the folks that influence others. KBC has developed several partnerships with key influencers.

For the annual Kentucky Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics conference this Spring, the Kentucky Beef Council sponsored nationally recognized dietitian, Liz Weiss, MS, RDN for her presentation on How to Deliver Globally Inspired Cooking Demonstrations on Zoom and other Virtual Platforms. In her presentation for Kentucky dietitians, Liz identified why cooking demos and classes can build consumer confidence in the kitchen and trigger behavior change for healthier eating patterns.

Then, she outlined the steps required to hold a cooking demonstration for various virtual venues and audiences.

She concluded with demonstrating a virtual cooking class while making a nutrient-rich recipe for Kofta Beef Power Bowls which the 25 participants enjoyed!

The registrants were provided Beef Swag boxes with Kentucky Beef Council goodies for attending.

On Monday, March 22nd, registered dietitian Janine Faber, MEd, RDN, LD provided a cooking demonstration and presentation for 23 participants to celebrate National Nutrition Month.

Janine highlighted the “Personalize Your Plate” National Nutrition Month message by making Spicy Korean Beef and Cucumber Appetizers and Liz’s Kofta Beef Power Bowls. Janine ended the virtual program with a presentation on the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and how lean beef fits in to the recommendations for different life stages.

Additionally, outreach to health professionals was also done through

eblasts. The Kentucky Beef Council sponsored messages sent to Kentucky Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ members and Kentucky Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ members. These eblasts shared new diabetes research with lean beef, discussed how lean beef fits into the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, promoted the upcoming healthcare professional webinar on Growing Up Strong: Prioritizing Critical Nutrients from Birth to Adolescence, and provided lean beef recipes from Beef It’s What’s For Dinner to celebrate Beef Month and National Mediterranean Diet Month in May.

Third, KBC continues works directly with foodie and lifestyle influencers on social media to provide education and inspiration. Rachel, of Rachel’s Healthy Plate, shares her kid-friendly dishes with her Instagram audience to help show how beef can be incorporated into the early years. While Karen, The Mrs. K Ray, shares a different take on spring rolls with steak in her “how to” post on Instagram. Dr. Chris Mohr, of Mohr Results, not only hosted a webinar focusing on The Role of Beef, Protein, and Exercise, but he will share those

messages on his Instagram account.

Although KBC has not be able to attend in-person events to have those one-onone conversations, we have hosted four Virtual Beef Cooking Classes where an average of twenty-five attendees get a personal behind-the-scenes look at roasting, skilleting, creating healthy beef dishes, as well as entertaining.

Even though word-of-mouth looks a little different, it can still go a long way in sharing our great message about how beef is delicious, nutritious, and sustainable.

Second, KBC continues to build Team Beef, which is a group of beef-loving runners and cyclists who spread the word about the power of beef in an active lifestyle as they get out and get active.

The 2021 season launched in January opening it up to cyclists. To date, thirtyseven runners and cyclists have joined the team. As part of their membership, participants complete an orientation scavenger hunt of kybeef.com and BeefItsWhatsForDinner.com to better understand beef from pasture to plate.

Team member, Nichole of Nicholasville said, “That was so fun. I learned a lot already about cattle.” Eight of the 37 have received their Masters of Beef Advocacy certificate and 4 have completed the Raw Truth about Beef courses. Members can earn race reimbursements by participating in educational events such as our virtual cooking classes, online webinars, etc. and running/cycling in KY Team Beef-approved races. BEEF BREAKFAST SAUSAGE AND GOAT CHEESE EGG BAKE

Ingredients: Basic Country Beef Breakfast Sausage (from previous page) • 1 recipe Basic Country Beef Breakfast Sausage • 1 pound frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed • 8 eggs • 1 teaspoon salt, divided • 1/2 teaspoon pepper, divided • 1-1/2 cups reduced-fat dairy sour cream • 1/2 cup 2% reduced-fat milk • 4 ounces crumbled goat cheese • 1/2 cup thinly sliced green onions Cooking: Preheat oven to 425°F. Spray 9-inch springform pan with cooking spray. Squeeze excess moisture from potatoes. Combine potatoes, 1 egg, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in medium bowl, tossing gently to coat. Press potato mixture onto bottom and up side of prepared pan. Do not place springform pan on baking sheet.

Bake in 425°F oven 20 to 30 minutes until potatoes are crispy and brown. Reduce oven temperature to 375°F Meanwhile, prepare Basic Country Beef Breakfast Sausage. Set aside.

Basic Country Beef Breakfast Sausage: Combine 1 pound ground beef (93% or leaner, 2 teaspoons chopped fresh sage (or 1/2 teaspoon rubbed sage), 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper in large bowl, mixing lightly, but thoroughly. Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add beef mixture; cook 8 to 10 minutes, breaking into 1/2-inch crumbles and stirring occasionally.

Whisk together remaining 7 eggs, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon remaining pepper, sour cream and milk in large bowl. Stir in cheese, green onions and sausage; pour mixture into hash-brown crust. Bake in 375°F oven 40 to 50 minutes or until eggs are set. Cool 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from pan; cut into wedges.

THE VALUE OF WEIGHT GAIN IN PRECONDITION PROGRAMS Kevin Laurent, Extension Specialist, University of Kentucky Since the inception of the CPH program in the early 1980’s, Kentucky has had a rich history in the promotion of weaning and preconditioning calves prior to sale.

In recent years the demand for weaned and preconditioned calves has been increasing, so much so that on any given sale day, packages of weaned calves are showing up at the yards. Still even with high demand for weaned calves, many producers continue to sell bawling calves.

For cow calf producers to fully embrace this practice, the preconditioning phase must be profitable. The Post Weaning Value Added – Precondition Program (PVAP-Precondition) was designed for producers who have never weaned and preconditioned calves prior to sale. In this program, calves are weighed and

valued at weaning and all expenses are recorded during the preconditioning phase. When calves are sold, a final closeout on the profitability of the preconditioning period is calculated.

The following table is a summary of closeouts of participants in the PVAPPrecondition program from April, 2019 to February, 2021.

There is much information to be gleaned from looking at this type of summary data. But for the sake of brevity I would like to focus on one main point.

The importance of weight gain on the profitability of the precondition program. This table is sorted from the highest net $/head to the lowest. The shaded top half of the table on average put 202 lbs. of gain on their calves during

the precondition period and averaged $99.04 net added dollars per head over expenses versus selling at weaning. The bottom half averaged a mere 119 lbs. of gain and netted only $53.87 per head returns.

If you look further under the average daily gain (ADG) column, you will see that ADG in the top half return group averaged 2.66 and ranged from 1.44 to 4.10. Days on feed averaged 83 days which is significantly more than the standard 45 day weaning program.

The take home message is the best hedge against market volatility is weight gain.

How we put the gain on the calf can vary.

We can be forage based and grow them slower but feed them more days or be feed based and grow them faster for a shorter feeding period. Right now, with feed costs higher, calf prices average at best, and many preconditioning programs moving to 60-day preconditioning periods, a longer feeding period with moderate

gains utilizing our forage resources may be the most profitable strategy.

One caution when using a forage-based program is to make a fair evaluation of your forage resources. Short overgrazed fescue pastures are not going to result in very favorable gains. In general, cool season perennial pastures need to be in the 4-8 inch range in height and depending on the forage specie may still need to be supplemented. A good rule of thumb would be to supplement 1% of body weight for gains in the 1.5-2.0 range and 2% bodyweight for gains in the 2.0 to 2.8 range. Again, realizing the quantity and quality of forage becomes extremely important when the amount of supplement is decreased.

Every couple of years the good Lord gives us perfect weather for the spring calving season. This year was that season. While there was a little bit of cold weather at the middle of February, the end of the month and all of March was dryer than

normal with mild temperatures.

The first calf heifers started calving on February 17th. We breed them one week ahead of the mature cows, which started calving six days later on February 23rd.

So far, we have had 92 calves born (and

We had more cows bred in the first two heat cycles than ever before. 56% of the calf crop was born in the first 21 days, and 89% of the calves were born in a 45 day window! I still believe that the greatest benefit to the AI process is synchronizing the cows and getting them bred early in the calving season.

Our AI conception rate was down this year from what it has been in the past. Our first calf heifers only had an AI conception rate of 46%. They are usually much higher around 60%. The cows were down a little from normal as well, but not all that

much. They had an AI conception rate of 52%, only down about 3-5% from normal.

I’m not sure what caused the lower conception rate in the heifers, but they did breed good with the cleanup bull. The heifers had a total conception rate of 90%, while the cows did even better with a total conception rate of 95%.

This year’s calf crop is going to have a lot of uniformity in both size and color, with most of the calves being black or black baldies. There are a couple of red baldie calves too, but overall there is less variation in color than in years past. And with the uniformity in both age and size, this group should make a nice package come time to market them in the fall.

Deciding when to calve your cows often impacts profitability. Most people that know me or have heard me “preach the gospel” of a controlled calving season assume that I believe that one or two short calving seasons is best. But reality dictates that the marketing plan should dictate the calving season. A great example is the current trend in freezer beef. I have worked with several freezer-beef producers who need longer calving seasons to ensure a more consistent supply of finished cattle.

Most of the industry however remains small herds (25-30 cows) marketing at a stockyard either at weaning or after a short backgrounding period.

Maintaining a controlled breeding and calving season can be one of the most important management tools for these cowcalf producers. A uniform, heavier, and more valuable calf crop is one key reason for keeping the breeding season short. Plus, more efficient cow supplementation and cow herd health programs are products of a short breeding season. However, converting from a year-long breeding season to a shortened 2 to 3 month breeding season should not be done haphazardly.

A system for converting from year-round to a 75-day controlled calving season over a period of two years would present less loss and fewer problems than to try to convert in one year. The following steps are suggested for getting on a controlled breeding system:

1. Determine the ideal time of year and the

length of your new calving season. For example, cows will calve from March 1st to May 10th (71 days).

2. Pull the bull. You cannot gain control

of the calving season with the bull in the pasture with the cows. Either sell him or build a strong bull pen or wellfenced bull pasture. An electric fence

in addition to the regular fence may be needed.

3. Determine the reproductive status of

each cow in your herd. First, go to your record book to determine the last date each cow calved. If you don’t keep records, try to match the cows and calves up and estimate their age. For example, let’s assume we have 30 cows. Today’s date is January 18, 2019. Calving dates for 2018 are as follows: Jan = 0 calved, Feb = 3 calved, Mar = 9 calved, Apr = 5 calved, May = 5 calved, June = 2 calved, July = 1 calved, Aug = 0 calved, Sept = 2 calved, Oct = 2 calved, Nov = 1 calved, Dec = 0 calved,. The bull has been in the entire time so the cows that calved last spring are most likely getting ready to calve in Spring 2019 and the five cows that calved in the fall could be pregnant.

Next, work with your veterinarian to determine the pregnancy status of the herd. When will the spring cows calve?

Are the fall-calvers open or pregnant?

The cows that calved in October and November may not have conceived yet so they can roll easily into your springcalving system.

4. Based upon the reproductive status of

your herd, determine if you would like one, controlled calving season or two.

In our example, we only have six cows calving in the fall window (July-Nov) so having two seasons doesn’t really make much sense. If, however, half of your herd calved July-December, it is a better economic decision to make these your fall-calving cows and the ones that calve from January-June your springcalving cows.

5. Plan your breeding season. Let’s assume

the cow that calved in November was open when the bull was removed

SPRING-CALVING COW HERD Continue supplying a high magnesium mineral until daytime temperatures are consistently above 60 degrees F. Improve or maintain body condition (BCS 5) of cows before breeding season starts.

If necessary, increase energy intake even on pasture.

Bulls should have a breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) well before the breeding season (at least 30 days). Contact your local veterinarian to schedule a BSE for your herd sires. They should also receive their annual booster vaccinations and be dewormed.

Schedule spring “turn-out “working in lateApril or early-May; i.e. at the end of calving season and before the start of breeding season. Consult with your veterinarian about vaccines and health products for your herd.

“Turn-out” working for the cow herd may include: • • • •

Prebreeding vaccinations Deworming Replacing lost identification tags Sort cows into breeding groups, if using more than one bull • Insecticide eartags (best to wait until fly population builds up) “Turn-out” working of calves may include: • Vaccinate for IBR-PI3, Clostridial diseases and Pinkeye • Dehorn, if needed (can be done with electric dehorner and fly repellent during fly season) • Castrate and implant male feeder calves (if not done at birth) • Deworm • Insecticide eartags Consider breeding yearling replacement heifers one heat cycle (about 21 days) earlier than cows for “head-start” calving.

Mate to known calving-ease bulls.

Record identification of all cows and bulls in each breeding group.

Begin breeding cows no later than mid-May, especially if they are on high endophyte fescue. Cows should be in good condition so that conception occurs prior to periods of extreme heat.

Consider synchronizing estrus in all cows.

Exposing late-calving cows and first-calf heifers to a progestin (MGA feed or CIDR device) for 7 days before bull turn out increases pregnancy rates.

Choose best pastures for grazing during the breeding season. Select those with the best stand of clover and the lowest level of the fescue endophyte, if known.

Keep these pastures vegetative by grazing or clipping. High quality pastures are important for a successful breeding season.

If using artificial insemination: • Use an experienced inseminator.

• Make positive identification of cows and semen used. This will permit accurate records on date bred, return to heat, calving date and sire.

• Good handling facilities and gentle working of the cows are essential.

• Choose AI sires that will meet your goals and resist the temptation to get your cows bigger.

Observe breeding pastures often to see if bulls are working. Records cows’ heat dates and then check 18-21 days later, for return to heat.

FALL-CALVING HERD Pregnancy check the cow herd. Remove open cows at weaning time.

Plan marketing program for calves.

Consider various options, such as maintaining ownership and backgrounding in a grazing program, or precondition and sell in a CPH-45 feeder calf sale.

Initiate fly control for the cows when fly population builds up.

Calves may be weaned anytime now but you can take advantage of the spring grass by leaving them on the cow a while or weaning and grazing.

STOCKERS Keep calves on good pasture and rotate pastures rapidly during periods of lush growth.

Manage to keep pastures vegetative for best performance.

Provide mineral mix with an ionophore.

Implant as needed.

Control internal and external parasites GENERAL Harvest hay. Work around the weather and cut early before plants become too mature. Harvesting forage early is the key to nutritional quality. Replenish your hay supply!

Rotate pastures as needed to keep them vegetative.

Clip pastures to prevent seedhead formation on fescue and to control weeds.

Seed warm season grasses this month.

the pregnancy status of the herd was determined. She will be rolled to the spring with the cows that will calve from January-July. A decision will need to be made for the August-October calving cows. Do we cull them and replace or do we hold them after they calve this year?

Remember, they were pregnant when reproductive status was determined in Step 3 so we have to either cull and replace or wait on them to calve and hold them over until the spring of 2020. Typically, it is a little cheaper to simply hold the cow over because the “cost” of this decision is the loss of 4-6 months of potential revenue ($200-

400). If the cow is older (8+ years) then consider culling her and replacing with a bred heifer that will calve in February. The cost difference between a bred replacement heifer and a cull cow is about $500 but that is highly variable. Recently, cull cows have been really cheap so the cost to replace is a bit higher.

6. Expose your herd to the bull on May

20th and remove the bull September 1st in 2019. This is later than ideal but the process to move from year-round calving to controlled calving is at least a two-year process. Sixty days after removing the bulls from the herd (or

at a convenient time near this date), pregnancy check all cows and cull open cows. Your fall-calving cows have likely either calved or are very close to calving.

7. If you are developing your own

replacements, consider starting the breeding season of replacement heifers 20 to 30 days ahead of the final breeding date for the herd. Most extended calving seasons are the result of failure of young cows to rebreed in a timely fashion. The additional 20-30 days enhances the opportunity for these young cows to rebreed next season. So, the replacement heifer breeding season would start around April 20th and these

females would begin calving around February 1st. Weather in February is not always ideal calf death loss might increase 1-2%. Financially, 1-2% death loss is easier to swallow than a 25% decrease in pregnancy rate the following year.

8. The second year, follow the same

system as outlined about except remove the bull on August 1st. If you have fall and spring calvers, then put the bull in for the fall cows around November 20th and remove him around February 1st.
