A few good men... are you one? The U. S. Marine Corps had a recruiting slogan several years ago. It went something like this, “We are looking for a few good men.” It implied that not everyone was cut out to be a Marine. Not everyone was tough enough. Not everyone was strong enough mentally and physically. In short not everyone was good enough to be a Marine. Just like the U. S. Marines the followers of the Lord are sometimes referred to as military warriors. They are told to “fight the good fight of faith” (I Tim. 6:12) They are told to “put on the whole armour of God” (Eph 6:11) The followers of God are in a totally different kind of war than the Marines. Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places However there are many similarities to the Marines and the Lord’s followers. Not every one is cut out to be a follower of the Lord. Just like the Marines, it takes a lot of discipline, a lot of sacrifice and a lot of selfdenial to follow the Lord, a price most are unwilling to pay. The Marines know there are many who could be a good Marine but they are not willing to pay the price. Similarly with following God, all can follow him but few will pay the price. God sent Christ to save everybody but not everybody will be saved. John 3: 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Note that God loved the “world,” every one, and that “whosoever” can be saved, God is clear that His desire is to save everyone. 2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long-

wwsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. The grim reality is that few will be saved despite God’s efforts to save everyone. Mt. 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen. Mat 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. If God wants everyone to be saved, yet few will be saved, wherein lies the problem? The problem is not with God; so it must be with us. Why will most be lost? Because most of us are not willing to pay the price. Remember the rich young ruler who came to Jesus asking how he might obtain eternal life (Mt. 19:16-30, Luke 18:1830). He was told he lacked only one thing. Only one thing stood between him and salvation- his riches. He loved them more than God. Luke 18:22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. 23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. Jesus went on to say it was easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. What will keep us from salvation? Anything we put before (ahead of) God. God said, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3 Only a few will be saved because only a few will give up the sin that separates them from God. Isaiah 59:1 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it can-

not save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. Only a few will be saved because their faith is high in rhetoric but short on action. James 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. We need to have a little less talk and a lot more action. Jas 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Only a few will be saved because they are following their heart and not the Lord. Sincerity is not enough. Paul admitted this in his persecution of the church. Ac 26:9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. Sadly many will not recognize until the judgment day that what they thought was right is not right. Mt. 7: 21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. The Lord wants a few good men. Will you be one of them?
