She was preceded in death by son Tommy Mauldin, her parents, five sisters and nine brothers. Esther “Ethel” B. Harvey Smith Date of Death - January 27, 2012 Mother Esther “Ethel” B. Harvey Smith one of twelve children born to the late Jimmy and Genevia Harvey, died Friday, January 27, 2012. Visitation took place on Friday, Feb. 3, from noon-6 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home in Mason. Services took place Saturday at noon at Wray’s Chapel Church, Somerville; visitation at 11 a.m. prior to service. Burial took place in McCulley Cemetery, Oakland. Her legacy will remain in the lives of her seven children, Cleven (Mary) Smith, Annie and Fannie Smith and Willie (Dorothy) Smith all of Memphis, Esther (James) Johnson, of Forsyth Ill., Richard (Ernestine) Smith of Mason and B. B. Smith of Gallaway, siblings Paul Harvey and Alice Cooper both of Somerville, three sisters in law, 18 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren. Ollie M. Hatchel Jackson Date of Death - January 31, 2012 Mrs. Ollie M. Hatchel Jackson, 91, a homemaker from Covington, died on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at her residence. She was a member of Charleston Full Gospel Church, Sunday School teacher and secretary/treasurer at Pleasant Hill Church of God; she was also a song leader at Randolph Assembly of God Church. Mrs. Hatchel Jackson also an avid gardener and loved to quilt and write poetry. Funeral services took place on Thursday, Feb. 2 at Munford Funeral Chapel. She was buried at Morrison Cemetery. The widow of John Conway Jackson, Mrs. Jackson is survived by daughters Beverly (Terry) Yarbro and Patsy (Larry) Compton and son Luther Ray (Barbara) Jackson, 17 grandchildren, 29 greatgrandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren and two greatgreat-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughters Alice Fay Jackson and Myra Sue Gray, son Phillip Conway Jackson, parents John Thomas and Sadie Miles Hatchel and five brothers. Ellen Laverne Creasy October 24, 1925 - February 4, 2012 Ellen Laverne Creasy, 86, homemaker and member of Central Christian Church, died Saturday, February 4, 2012 in Covington. Funeral services took place at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, with visitation Monday from 5-8 p.m., both at Maley-Yarbrough Funeral Home. Interment followed in R. H. Munford Cemetery in Covington. Mrs. Creasy, the widow of Murray (Coby) Creasy, leaves daughters Linda (Donald) Haimes of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Jean (Tom) Needham of Arlington, Barbara Gail (Daryl) Clowes of Covington, Rachel Marie (Kirk) Rushing of Trussville, Ala., and Rose Sinclair of Bartlett; sons, William Murray (Karen) Creasy of Bartlett, Jerry Wayne (Joan) Creasy of Atoka, and Dwight Glenn Creasy of Brighton; 29 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and five greatgreat-grandchildren. Clifton L. Deverell July 26, 1941 - January 31, 2012 Clifton L. Deverell, 70, the former Covington Police Chief, died on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at his residence. In addition to serving the city in a law enforcement capacity, Mr. Deverell served his country in the U.S. Army. Funeral services took place on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Maley-Yarbrough Funeral Home. He was buried at Covington Memorial Gardens. Christ where she served for many years as a Sunday school teacher. She was also a charter member of the Little Book Club in Covington. She was a supporter of the public schools and the PTA, and she served as room mother, a Brownie Scout leader, and, in later years, as a carrier for Meals on Wheels. She was considered the matriarch of her family, and she will be remembered fondly by her nieces and nephews for her optimism, patience, humor, faith, wisdom and kindness to others. She was a precious aunt to them, and they were a constant source of encouragement, joy and comfort to her. Her God and her church were first in her life, and that was evident by the way she lived and conducted herself. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking, traveling, reading her Bible, watching “Days of Our Lives,” and serving others in her church and in her community. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth LaVerne Baxter, of Memphis, by her much-loved caretaker of 17 years, Ellen McKee, of Covington, and by a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation took place on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Maley-Yarbrough Funeral Home in Covington. Funeral services took place at the funeral home on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. She will be buried at R.H. Munford Cemetery in Covington. Memorial gifts may be made to the Covington Church of Christ, St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Arthritis Association.
Virginia Bernice Corder Baxter, 97, of Covington, passed away on February 5, 2012, at Covington Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Covington. The youngest of 11 children, she was born on December 24, 1914, in Lincoln County, Tennessee to Benjamin T. Corder and Nancy Bell Benson Corder. Mrs. Baxter, following the career choices of her three sisters, earned her nursing degree from General Hospital in Nashville in 1936 and went on to receive her public health certification from George Peabody College in Nashville. After working for the public health department in Columbia, Tennessee in 1937, she was transferred to Tipton County in 1938, where she continued a career in public health that spanned about 30 years. Two months after she arrived in Covington, she met her future husband, Don Russell Baxter, who lived across the street from the boarding house where she lived. They married on June 15, 1940, and were married for 58 years. Before his death in 1998, he told her that “he had loved her dearly,” and she carried that precious sentiment with her always. She was also preceded in death by two sons who died in infancy, Warner Duke Baxter and Gary Baxter. Mrs. Baxter was a longtime member of the Covington Church of
Hugh Elliott Castellaw Date of Death – February 6, 2012 Hugh Elliott Castellaw, 78, formerly of Covington, passed away Monday, Jan. 6, 2012, at his home. Mr. Castellaw was a 1952 graduate of Byars Hall High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball, was a member of the C Club, and excelled in mechanical drawing. He served in the US Air Force as a staff sergeant until 1956, having been stationed in San Antonio TX and Okinawa. He graduated Tennessee Tech in 1960, and worked for the Social Security Administration until retirement in 1998 as Assistant District Manager for the Nashville District. After retirement he volunteered at Williamson Medical Center. Mr. Castellaw enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, Civil War history, and carving. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Franklin. Services took place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at MaleyYarbrough Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior to service. Interment will follow in Covington Memorial Gardens. Mr. Castellaw leaves his wife of 51 years, Betty Lou Johnston Castellaw, a daughter Mary Lynn Bowman (Chris) of Madison, MS, a son, James (Jim) King Castellaw (Leigh) of Cordova, grandchildren Lee, Anna Beth, and Ryan of Madison, MS, and Taylor and Zach of Cordova, and brother- and sister-in-law, Harry and Morie Cardosi of Memphis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roland King & Marie Crenshaw Castellaw and brother Wade Castellaw. Memorials may be made to the Williamson County (TN) Library. The Leader (Covington, Tenn.)
