Dear Covina-Valley Unified Community,

This report celebrates the incredible achievements of our students, staff, and schools during the 2023-24 school year. Covina-Valley Unified remains dedicated to providing an innovative education that fosters academic excellence and holistic development for every child in a safe and nurturing environment.

Elevating Student Potential:

„ We offer rigorous academic programs, including Advanced Placement (AP) Capstone at Northview High, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma at South Hills High, and Dual Enrollment at Covina High, preparing students for college and careers.

„ Our District boasts graduation rates and A-G completion rates that exceed the state and county averages.

„ Our students graduate and attend some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the country including Yale, Stanford, and Columbia universities. Each year, our students earn valuable scholarships to these schools, totaling over several million dollars.

„ We offer 24 Career Technical Education pathways, including Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Medical Assisting, Cosmetology, and Court Reporting.

An Innovative Education to Prepare Students for College, Careers, and Beyond

Covina-Valley Unified offers a range of unique programs that ignite the curiosity and passion of students starting as early as elementary school. With enriching opportunities like Spanish and Mandarin Dual Immersion programs, 1:1 technology, robust art and music programs, and more, C-VUSD’s youngest learners are exposed to an innovative education that sets them up for future success.

At the high school level, students can take advantage of Northview High School’s AP Capstone and South Hills High School’s IB Diploma programs, empowering them to engage with challenging coursework and develop the critical thinking skills essential for success in college, while also exploring diverse

C-VUSD Showcased for Exemplary Practices in A-G Course Completions

Covina-Valley Unified School District was celebrated for its exemplary insights and strategies into student enrollment and success in A-G courses, shining a light on the District’s dedication to reducing equity gaps in college eligibility and promoting educational excellence.

C-VUSD was one of nine school districts featured in the Policy Analysis for California Education’s (PACE) A-G Resource Guide, each of which achieved completion rates that surpassed the overall statewide rate.

The District boasted an overall 2019 A-G course completion rate of 69.1%, compared with the state average of just above 40%. C-VUSD also reported high rates of A-G course completion among socioeconomically disadvantaged, Latinx, Black, and English Learner students, outperforming the state in each subgroup.

The District was also recognized for its commitment to increasing equitable access to Honors and Advanced Placement courses by eliminating all prerequisites, assessments, and essays needed to enroll in upper-level classes.

Covina High School’s partnership with Mt. San Antonio College gives students the opportunity to engage in high-level courses and earn college credit through their Dual Enrollment program, giving students a valuable head start on their higher education journeys.

C-VUSD students are equipped with the knowledge and experience needed to thrive in their chosen career paths through internships and professional development opportunities facilitated by the District’s partnerships with local trade unions and industry leaders. These opportunities help ensure that all C-VUSD students are confident in their abilities and are inspired to achieve their limitless potential.

C-VUSD Breaks Ground on New Covina High School Aquatics Center

Students, staff, families, community members, and dignitaries gathered at Covina High School to celebrate the groundbreaking of the school’s new Aquatics Center – a project multiple years in the making.

The project will replace the current 1950s-era pool and upgrade the aquatics facilities, ensuring students have access to modern amenities for physical education classes, water polo and swim team practices and competitions, and more.

Construction of the new Aquatics Center is funded primarily through Measure CC General Obligation Bond funds, with an additional $4 million in federal funds secured through the advocacy of Congresswoman Grace Napolitano. The Covina High School Aquatics Center project is estimated to be completed in spring 2025.

Modernized learning facilities play a pivotal role in enhancing the learning environment and overall educational experience at Covina-Valley Unified. The District’s past, current, and future facilities projects signify a commitment to providing students with safe, modern, and conducive spaces for learning and growth. Upgrading our facilities ensures that students have access to state-of-the-art resources, technology, and infrastructure, empowering them to thrive academically and socially in a safe and healthy learning environment.

Covina-Valley Prioritizes Campus Safety

Covina-Valley Unified prioritized student safety in the 2023-24 school year by equipping every campus with the innovative CENTEGIX CrisisAlert System, a leading incident response technology that functions without Wi-Fi or mobile connections. Approved for multi-year use by the Board of Education, this system allows staff to quickly respond to emergencies with wearable panic buttons, activating alerts that notify school administration and first responders with precise room locations. C-VUSD was the first public school district in California to fully adopt the program, enhancing safety and providing peace of mind for students, staff, and families.

Students received free haircuts at the District’s Back to School Extravaganza in August. The event, held at the District Health and Wellness Center, provided students with access to free school supplies.

C-VUSD Receives Grant to Continue Prioritizing Student Health and Wellness

Covina-Valley Unified’s steadfast dedication to nurturing student well-being and providing comprehensive mental health services that go beyond the classroom has been strengthened with the help of a $7.2 million California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP) grant.

The District received grants for four of its elementary schools and each of its comprehensive high schools. The $7.2 million total for the seven grants will be disseminated over five years.

The grant funds will be used to expand the health and wellness support available to students across the District and will allow

Covina-Valley Unified School District has earned a spot on the Educational Results Partnership’s (ERP) Honor Roll District list, showcasing its exceptional performance and dedication to student success. This recognition highlights the District’s commitment to closing achievement gaps and accelerating student learning.

The ERP Honor Roll acknowledges schools and districts that prepare students with essential workforce skills. This year, only 17% of eligible schools in California made the ERP Honor Roll, selected based on student outcome data from 2019 to 2023.

Seven C-VUSD elementary schools were also individually named to the ERP 2023 Honor Roll Schools list. These schools offer unique and innovative programs, such as dual language immersion programs in Mandarin and Spanish and after-school programs to help students with their homework.

Covina-Valley Unified’s dedication to strong reading comprehension, personalized classroom attention, and numerous after-school support programs underscores its mission to provide all students with opportunities for success.

The grants have allowed the District to hire counselors at all elementary school sites and three new mental health counselors at high school sites, further increasing students’ accessibility to resources and support.

In addition to these new, integrated support services for students, the grant focuses on family and community engagement, collaborative leadership and practices, and extended learning time and opportunities .

Covina-Valley Unified Receives Millions in Competitive Grants

During the 2023-24 school year, Covina-Valley Unified secured millions of dollars in competitive grants, ensuring a future of enhanced educational opportunities and infrastructure improvements for students.

The District recently received the Golden State Pathways Grant, a competitive grant that will provide over $3 million to expand the District’s Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. The District has also received funds through the Career Technical Education Incentive Grant (CTEIG) program. These grants will both provide heightened opportunities for students, bolstering the development and enhancement of the District’s standout CTE pathways.

Other grants the District received are the CalShape Phase I and II grants, which provide $9.7 million in current and future grant opportunities dedicated to repairing and replacing old HVAC units, installing and upgrading controls across the District, and upgrading and improving plumbing systems.

C-VUSD’s commitment to the arts was recognized by the Los

Angeles County Arts Education Collective, which awarded the District a $25,000 competitive grant to purchase new tables, artist stools, drying racks, and storage for middle school art classrooms. To expand access to concurrent enrollment opportunities for high school students, the District received a total of $500,000 in grants under the College and Career Access Pathways Act. Each high school in the District received $100,000, with an additional $100,000 allocated to the District Office. This funding will pave the way for more students to engage in college-level coursework while still in high school, giving them a head start on their higher education and career paths.

Additionally, Covina High School was awarded a $250,000 grant from the California Department of Education (CDE) under the Middle College and Early College (MCEC) competitive grants program. This grant will support the expansion of the school’s dual enrollment program and the establishment of an Early College High School on campus.

C-VUSD Prepares Students for Success with Rigorous Career Technical Education Pathways

Covina-Valley Unified School District is dedicated to preparing students for future success through its 24 unique Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways. These programs provide students with the skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience needed for various professional fields, making them career-ready and competitive before graduating high school.

The District’s CTE offerings include classes in medical assisting and nursing, robotics, veterinary science, culinary arts, fine arts, media, and entertainment, and much more. Each pathway combines rigorous coursework with practical training, such as internships and job shadowing.

Supported by partnerships with local businesses, these programs ensure that students gain valuable industry insights and opportunities.
