NAU MAI, HAERE MAI For 2024 we are celebrating art and entertainment, our artists, and our audiences. As we put together the pieces of this, our final season in The Shed, a natural theme emerged: plays and musicals that are, in some way, about artistry itself; the plays, music, literature, and other performing arts that reflect and enrich the human experience.

There is plenty of variety throughout the year but the guiding principle has been what our audiences told us they love. There is comedy, drama, new works, classics, and world-class musicals, along with shows to delight our youngest audiences, and the improvised genius of our Court Jesters. From a backstage farce to a ground-breaking classic, we aim to make you laugh, cry, think, and tap your feet. Every show holds up the artistic standards of The Court Theatre,

with something to inspire not only you, our audience, but also our actors, directors, designers, and our expert production team, giving them an opportunity to flex their talents with exciting material.

Inclusivity is a core value for The Court Theatre, and we offer relaxed performances, NZSL interpreted shows, communication friendly performances, hearing loops, and audio described shows. New and emerging talent is nurtured and showcased in the Court Youth Company and Jesters Youth Company. Our Education and Outreach Programme provides opportunities for personal and professional growth, whilst delivering educational theatre to schools and communities throughout Waitaha Canterbury.

This is a time to honour our remarkable and long history creating professional theatre for Ōtautahi Christchurch and the many skilled people who have contributed their talents to this company, as well as the loyal audiences who make us what we are. Our team, headed by Artistic Director Dr Alison Walls, has shaped a season of compelling storytelling, designed to provide a year-long celebration of art and entertainment, and to delight and include the diverse audiences of Ōtautahi Christchurch and Aotearoa New Zealand.

In curating our 2024 Season we have listened to our audience and constructed a season of high-quality shows that we believe will excite, captivate, and entertain you. The Court Theatre’s brand of theatre includes building our shows quite literally from the ground up, with bespoke sets, costumes, and props skillfully crafted on site. Those of you who have taken a backstage tour will know the love and care that goes into making world class theatre here in little old Ōtautahi Christchurch!

2024 will be a special year in the history of The Court. It will be our last year welcoming you to our beloved Shed in Addington. As the walls go up and the roof goes on, the excitement is growing for our new home in the city, and we are thankful for our valued partnership with Christchurch City Council. We expect to transition to our new and beautiful custom-designed theatre in the Performing Arts Precinct in early 2025. Ken Ludwig's clever adaptation of the Agatha Christie classic boasts all the glamour, intrigue, and suspense of Dame Agatha's celebrated novel, with a healthy dose of humour to quicken the pace.

Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of the year, but by the morning it is one passenger fewer. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed eight times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, the passengers rely on detective Hercule Poirot to identify the murderer – in case they decide to strike again.

In this enduringly powerful drama, through an intricate story of reputations, secrets, love, and betrayal, Nora finds her way out of the “doll’s house” constructed by a restrictive society, ready to discover who she really is.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH Learn, train, and entertain.

The Court Theatre Education and Outreach Programme is home to The Court Youth Company and the Jesters Youth Company, both of which offer training and performance opportunities for young entertainers and performers aged 17-21.

We host school matinees, providing live theatre experiences to students, alongside school workshops and education packs.

We also run the Theatresports™ in schools competition, host our School Ambassadors programme and provide theatre technologies training through The Court Youth Crew.

We produce touring youth shows for both primary and secondary schools, and offer improvisation and drama classes for children, young people and adults.

There is something for everyone in Education at The Court Theatre.

CREATING THEATRE AT THE HEART OF OUR CITY The new Court Theatre, located on the corner of Gloucester and Colombo Streets and opening in 2025, will be the best theatre space in the country.

Ground-breaking architecture by Athfield Architects (NZ) and Haworth Tompkins (London, UK) has resulted in a design expressively embodying manaakitanga (welcoming), whānaungatanga (belonging) and hospitality.

Built in partnership with Christchurch City Council, our new home will be an architectural and living expression of human creativity, reflecting and embracing the many faces of our community – truly a theatre for Aotearoa New Zealand.

The building will offer an open invitation to those who want to intimately share the diverse programme of The Court Theatre’s work and make The Court their own creative space.

We will return city audiences to theatre spaces purpose-built to bring the viewer closer to our art at play. The new central city theatre will ensure that generations of theatre lovers will continue to gather at The Court to share stories, laughter and life.
