Hessle-based jeweller Joshua James has announced its new luxury addition: a bespoke wedding and engagement ring service. During lockdown, work was carried out to make the store even more luxurious, with particular focus on the bespoke jewellery consultation room. The space has been designed with comfort in mind, and features its own bar with complimentary champagne and cocktails.

The company offers two levels of customised design for their wedding and engagement rings.

Firstly, the step-by-step process allows you to choose the materials and style of your ring from a selection, as well as choosing your own diamond to suit your budget. Secondly, they offer a completely bespoke package, which gives you complete control over every aspect of your ring. After an initial meeting to discuss ideas, the designers draw up sketches before you receive a 3D render and wax model of the piece to make final checks. We chat to Andrea Matthews, head of weddings and events at The Grand Lodge at Oaklands (www.oaklandsweddings.co.uk), about this stunning new setting in the heart of rural East Yorkshire…

Tell us about The Grand Lodge at Oaklands...

Built in 2020, The Grand Lodge replaces the tipis that once sat at Oaklands. Constructed using local timber, this unique lodge venue is a mix of rustic charm with luxury elements. Nestled within 200 acres of beautiful woodland, beside a picturesque lake, it’s in the most tranquil setting.

INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT

CherryTop Weddings has developed a new COVID-secure interactive wedding entertainment experience that can be enjoyed by guests attending as well as friends and relatives watching remotely. It’s also ideal for larger celebrations when restrictions lift. Everyone will receive a Love Story, which is a printed booklet personalised by the couple. It contains photographs of the newlyweds and activities chosen by them, including a quiz to find out how much their guests know about them, wedding-speech bingo, word searches, drawing challenges and much more.

How did the venue launch?

Back in 2011, Mike and Linda, the owners, hired tipis and held their own wedding on the land, which we now know as Oaklands. Their guests were so impressed that they encouraged the newlyweds to turn Oaklands into a business. After building the outdoor ceremony area, sourcing their own tipis and preparing the space, the first wedding was conducted in 2015. In 2017 it was time to plan for the future; the owners decided to build The Grand Lodge, which would replace the tipis and offer year-round weddings.

What’s your top tip for couples when choosing a wedding venue?

Before you embark on your search, have a list in mind of what’s important to you. Most venues will have a website and social media pages – so do some research to see if it will tick some of your boxes.

If yes, book an appointment. On your visit, try to imagine yourself and your guests there – do you get a good vibe from the place? The majority of couples will know instantly if it’s the one!

The perfect setting

The West Park Hotel is a beautiful boutique hotel and venue overlooking the Harrogate Stray. Not only is it celebrating its seventh anniversary of opening, but it’s also the 11th anniversary of its parent company, Provenance. During the first two lockdowns, the hotel undertook a complete refurbishment to its interiors, providing a new look for the bar, reception, 25 bedrooms and event space. What’s more, it introduced the gorgeous Garden Room, which features a showstopping living wall and a retractable roof.

The third lockdown saw even more refurbishment, with the Courtyard and outdoor bar, lounge and dining room areas all getting a refresh. After a year of lockdowns and restrictions, Cartwright’s Wedding Cars is looking forward to getting back to what it does best: transporting couples on the happiest day of their lives.

“Established in 1990 and based in Huddersfield, we have the North of England’s largest fleet of wedding cars,” owner Dick Cartwright tells us. “We have transport ranging from vintage-style cars to a Ferrari F430 Spider.”

oth teachers, our newlyweds met when Rio interviewed Robbie for a teaching post at the school she works in. “At first, he thought I was quite intimidating,” Rio laughs. “We grew very close as work colleagues, before deciding to give our relationship a go during the summer holidays. We soon realised it was exactly what we both wanted.”

It was on a magical trip to New York at Christmas that Robbie popped the question in the most romantic of ways.

“While walking through Central Park, I heard a guitarist playing my favourite song: Dreams by Gabrielle,” Rio says. “I noticed rose petals and framed pictures of us next to where the guitarist was playing – I then realised Robbie might be about to propose. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him; it was a complete surprise and one of the most perfect moments in my life!” After clarifying that Robbie had asked her dad (he had!), Rio said “Yes!” After a year of lockdowns, restrictions and guidelines, Rio and Robbie managed to tie the knot on 29th December, 2020, with 15 guests – just before the UK went into its third lockdown. We caught up with Rio to find out how they planned their beautiful winter wedding at Sneaton Castle…

THE PERFECT SETTING Rio fell in love with Sneaton Castle in Whitby as soon as she walked into the chapel. “My sister said we couldn’t find a venue better suited to me if we tried!” Rio smiles. The intimate, cosy atmosphere was everything the couple could have wished for. “I loved that everything was neutral and white,” Rio says. “I knew instantly that this was the aisle I wanted to walk down to get married.”

MAKING THE DAY THEIR OWN The couple chose a traditional Christmassy palette of gold and green to fit with the season. “The venue provided most of the flowers and decorations,” the bride says. “I loved the floral arch and blossom trees that were already scattered around the chapel. Forever to Hold provided a chunky Christmas garland to fit in with our theme.” The festive feel ran throughout the styling, with gold lanterns and artificial snow used to adorn the aisle and a rich green velvet tablecloth, which matched the bridesmaids’ dresses, was used for the ceremony table. The pair also treated themselves to a luxury car from Whitby Wedding Cars for transport on the day.

After the ceremony, the pair’s 15 closest friends and family created a walkway for the newlyweds and threw artificial snow over them as confetti. “It was at that moment that I realised I was now Mrs Farrier,” Rio smiles. Restrictions meant that a reception wasn’t possible, so guests made their way home while the newlyweds travelled to the Lake District for a minimoon. “On the way we stopped for a McDonalds!” Rio says. “This was our unconventional wedding meal, but it just added to how perfect the day was.”

LOOKING THE PART Rio knew exactly what she was looking for when it came to her dress. “I wanted a fitted style with a really long train,” she says. “I went to The Little Pearl in Pickering and tried on the Hatton Cross dress by Dando London and I fell in love.

We then tried it with the longest train in the shop; it was the perfect match and everything I had dreamed of.” When the dress came in, Rio went back to the boutique to try it on with a seamstress, who created the most delicate pearl-scattered angel wings to complement the gown perfectly. “I found an elegant tiara and the look was complete,” Rio says.

The couple had four beautiful bridesmaids. Rio’s two sisters wore velvet green dresses and her two best friends wore glittery gold numbers. “I wanted Robbie to wear a green velvet suit jacket to coordinate with my sisters’ dresses,” Rio explains.

“We went to Dandy Threads in Guisborough and found the perfect suit. It came in green and black, so Robbie wore the green and the other men wore black. This was complemented with a black paisley-patterned waistcoat.”

NAVIGATING THE NEW NORMAL After changing venues, cancelling the reception and cutting the guestlist down to just 15 people, the pair had faced their fair share of stress in the lead up to the day. “A week before the wedding I was sat at home listening to the announcement of the counties going into tier four,” Rio remembers. “We just hoped and prayed that Whitby wouldn’t be added to the list.

We always said that no matter what, we would get married, but we just really hoped it would stay at the 15-person guestlist, and luckily it did.”

So what would the newlyweds’ advice be to couples facing the same challenges? “If you want to get married, just do it,” Rio says. “No matter what obstacle we faced, we found a solution, and we honestly wouldn’t change a thing about our day. We got married for the right reason: love. Everything about the day was magical; it feels like a dream now.” The couple have still got much to look forward to, with a blessing and reception booked at Sneaton Castle for June 2021. “If it can’t go ahead, we’ll just push it back until it’s safe to do so,” Rio explains.

Rio’s top tip: “Don’t stress yourself. Ensure you’re well organised in advance and everything else will fall into place. Even if something doesn’t go as you expected, you’ll find a way to make it work.”

I

t was love at first swipe for Aukse and Scott. After matching on Tinder, the pair went on a few dates and they knew there was something special between them. When Scott popped the question, he kept it intimate and romantic. “He got down on one knee at home,” Aukse says. “He organised champagne, roses and our kittens as witnesses!”

The newly engaged pair got to work planning a destination wedding in Cyprus, but when the pandemic hit, their plans went out the window. “Everything changed except for our outfits and the flowers,” Aukse says. “We found a lovely venue in York, but when guest numbers were restricted to 15 people, we decided just to hold the ceremony at Dewsbury Town Hall in November. However, even this got cancelled because of the second lockdown!” Finally, the pair found a date that worked, 19th December, 2020, and managed to hold a beautiful micro-wedding at the Town Hall with an aqua blue colour scheme. I found my dress while shopping with my mum and sister before the pandemic. As we were planning a wed ding abroad, I wanted a lighter dress. However, once I tried mine on I knew it was the one – it was only the second style I tried ! I had it altered to fit me perfectly by a talented tailor in Leed s.

eth and Michael met when Beth went to check out Michael’s band, before her brother and sister-in-law booked them for their wedding. They got chatting after the gig, but then didn’t hear anything from each other until later that year. “Michael was friends with my brother’s best friend, Sally,” Beth tells us. “Sally mentioned to me that Michael was single and suggested we met up – by March I had moved in with him and I clung on for dear life!”

Michael chose Bonifacius Bridge in Bruges as the perfect spot to propose. “He was messing around with his camera – or so I

thought,” Beth says. “All of a sudden he dropped down on one knee and popped the question. My first reaction can’t be repeated, but it was along the lines of ‘Are you joking?’” After the initial shock and tears, of course she said ‘Yes’, and they celebrated with an amazing meal and moonlit stroll through Bruges’ canallined streets.

Back home, the date was set for 29th November, 2019, and they chose the quirky Crab & Lobster Restaurant in Thirsk for the setting.

Beth fills us in on the details…

Our venue was one of the first places we went to view. The quirky decorations were like nothing we’d seen before, from the old diving suit in the restaurant to the yeti in the manor house! We also loved the themed bedrooms with hot tubs – nothing compared to it.

We chose a hunter green colour scheme with wintry flowers. We left the florals up to our florist as we wanted something simple that didn’t overpower the venue. Our centrepieces were candles on wooden slices alongside little crab figures.

Our white, green and pearlescent cake coordinated brilliantly with the colour scheme of the day.

I wore the Chloe dress by Venus Bridal. It wasn’t the style I thought I’d choose, but as soon as I tried it on I knew it was the one. I thought the stunning detail under the bust and simple corset back tied in well with the venue. I kept my accessories simple with a short veil, pearl necklace and drop earrings, which were made by my mother-in-law.

Michael and his groomsmen looked dashing in a modern-cut navy suit.

The groom stood out with a different waistcoat and a larger buttonhole. My bridesmaids looked great in hunter green Dessy dresses; I let them choose their own style so that they were comfortable on the day.

We created all our own invitations and on-the-day stationery as part of our business, BC Creative. Instead of traditional favours, we donated money to two charities: Cancer Research UK and Alzheimer’s and Dementia Research.

Beth’s top tip: “Write a diary of events from the day. We did this on our minimoon and it was a great way to reflect on such a special day.”

We hired arcade machines from Arcade Hire to keep everyone entertained. We played Altered Beast, Pac Man and Super Mario.

The day was pretty packed and everything flowed smoothly, with time for everyone to chat and mingle.

I ended up being about half an hour late, which is quite normal for me!

The funny part was that I didn’t even realise. Michael’s first words to me were “What time do you call this?” Then he told me I looked beautiful!

It was incredible having all of our friends and family together for the first time, although most of us live relatively close, we still don’t seem to get together enough. We also had family from across the world there, which made it extra-special.

In the evening we snuck off with our photographer to get some amazing shots around the venue. It was a highlight for us because we got some precious time to chat and be together. Both our photographer and videographers worked amazingly together and made sure everything went smoothly.

pulent autumnal tones were the inspiration for this stunning styled scene. “With so many weddings being postponed recently, many couples have had to move to an autumn date,” says shoot planner Kim of Dreamboats & Carousels. “We wanted to showcase how gorgeous a wedding in this season can be.”

The beautiful bridal model, Nicola, was nearly six months pregnant when shooting the images. “We thought this was an important theme to touch on,” Kim explains.

“With the pandemic having an impact on couples’ life plans, we wanted to show that a pregnant bride can look just as gorgeous, and have a wonderful wedding.”

INTERVIEW If you could choose any celebrity to work with, who would it be and why?

Can I give two? Michelle Obama and Dina Asher-Smith. They’re very different but both stand for excellence and class. They’re extremely down-to-earth, hard workers and I really admire them both.

What’s hot in bridal hair at the moment?

Definitely the more relaxed hair styles that look romantic and sultry. So, it makes sense that romantic waves, maybe with the sides pinned up, are popular at the minute.

If you could impart just one piece of essential advice to brides about their bigday, what would it be?

Please take in the moment. Stop thinking of how people will view the day, the reception or indeed, you. Just think of the blessing of marriage and take in every moment.

ward-winning hair stylist Heather Dapaah opened her London-based salon, Her Definition at 23 and since then doors have continued to open on her career, working on TV sets, music videos, and getting celebs event-ready. To name drop a few, Heather’s clients have included reality stars Kaz Crossley and Priscilla Anyabu, athlete Perri Shakes-Drayton, and British RnB artists Ray BLK, Miraa May and Dolapo. She’s known for her signature Hollywood waves and says, “I love to help women understand their true hair type and learn how they can achieve their hair goals.”

Heather is highly sought after for her wide range of hair knowledge, having worked with all hair types and textures, so CWM beauty editor Kelly Andrews was delighted that she was able to take some time out to chat to her about their mutual passion – bridal hair.

Are there any red-carpet celebrity styles that you’ve created that would translate to a bridal look?

I’d have to say Gatsby-themed Hollywood waves and vintage waves. No matter what the latest hair trend is you always see these looks on red carpets everywhere.

What hair products or tools can’t you live without?

For bridal hairstyling it’s my one-inch curling tong, liquid hairspray by L’Oréal Studio Line, hair pins and my tail comb.

How can a bride set about deciding the right style for her on her wedding day?

I would say, start with the neckline of your

desired dress because that will determine how much space we have to play around with.

Obviously, face shape is really important too. In general, most people know what hairstyles suit them best, but you want to push the boundaries a little and come out of your comfort zone for your big day. Finally, the style of dress: whether it’s A-line, ballgown, fishtail and so on. Ultimately, you want a well-balanced silhouette. So, if you have an A-line that’s quite slim at the bottom, you can get away with bigger, wow-factor up dos.

What’s the biggest pitfall brides should take care to avoid when it comes to their wedding hair?

Make sure you have a trial with the hair stylist if you haven’t already seen them do the look you have in mind. It’s also important to practice your wedding hair style as what you think you want might not look or feel right for your day.

How can brides ensure their hair is in its best condition for the big day?

Do exactly as your wedding hair stylist recommends! This is the only time I would say don’t listen to your hairdresser, because your bridal specialist knows and understands the look you have envisioned together.

What’s next for you?

Well, after the detrimental effects of this pandemic, it’s definitely to get back to my beloved brides. I’d love to work on some celebrity weddings too.

SPF! I can’t shout about this enough. While many foundations and moisturisers have SPF in them, it’s usually a lot lower than what we need to keep our skin healthy and safe from the sun. Always layer up with a good face suncream before applying your day-to-day products.

Q We love the idea of a tipi wedding, but it feels like a total blank canvas. How do we style it to make it our own?

The fabulous thing about a tipi is that not only is it a blank canvas to decorate, but it also looks wonderful with no decoration other than fairylights! However, if you would like to put your own stamp on the structure, then there are lots of ways to do this.

We install a hanging point at the centre of each of our tipis for you to use. Our couples often choose to install floral hoops and foliage here, but they also look amazing with a chandelier, a boho macramé hanging or a sparkling glitter ball.

There are also lots of draping points throughout the tipi and all the timber poles are exposed and available for you to dress.

Outside, we love to have festoon lighting strung between the tops and along your entrance walkway to make the outside look just as magical as the inside.

Q We want a relaxed and natural garden wedding. How do we incorporate this into our cake design?

This is a great theme to inspire your cake. Try including muted tones, pastels and neutrals for the cake tiers, and pair it with lots of greenery and floral arrangements. If you want to go really paredback, try simply wrapping eucalyptus around the tiers.

The layers could also be filled with seasonal fruit to tie it all together. I don’t think anything says relaxed and natural more than a textured buttercream cake adorned with fresh florals. Why not match the cake flowers to your bouquet too for a simple yet elegant look?

You will have to consider the temperature if your cake is going to be outside. Opt for fondant or ganache in the warmer months, as opposed to buttercream, and keep your bake in a cool spot or indoors if possible.

Ring-a-ding-ding County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

L

ike many of you, I’m currently trying to plan my wedding during a global pandemic – there’s a sentence I never thought I’d say!

My partner Dave and I have been together just under three years, and we’d talked about getting engaged a few times over the course of our relationship. My work colleagues were also giddy every time we went away thinking he would propose; after a fantastic trip to the Northern Lights and coming back ring-free none of us had any idea when it would be – but I kind of liked it that way!

He had planned to propose last July but, due to COVID-19, his dreams of a romantic trip abroad were quashed. He had several backup plans, all of which were ruined by lockdowns and restrictions, so in the end, he asked me in front of my family (virtually) on

Christmas Day. It was a lovely moment, and we were both really excited and couldn’t wait to start planning.

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN! Having worked in the wedding industry for the last few years, I had a rough idea of where to start with the planning process. I’m highly organised and a big fan of making lists – there isn’t a folder in our house that isn’t colour coded, so the first thing I did was purchase a wedding planner to keep track of everything. I also looked through local wedding magazines, made a Pinterest board and joined a few Facebook groups, which are full of community spirit.

Next, Dave and I sat down and made a list of the people we wanted to come to our wedding. A great rule we followed was to only invite people that we’d spoken to in the last six months. It might sound harsh, but we both have large extended families and were concerned it may quickly turn in to a big list of people who we don’t really know!

We narrowed it down to 40 day guests and an additional 40 in the evening. Once we had the list, we were able to start focusing on the dreaded budget, which has been one of my least favourite parts of the process so far. We looked through guides online and over-budgeted for everything to ensure we don’t have any nasty surprises further down the line.

THE PERFECT SETTING After we had decided on our rough numbers 92

and budget, we began the exciting part – looking at venues. Due to the restrictions, this was a bit unconventional, with many properties only offering virtual viewings or only communicating via e-mail. Luckily, we managed to view our favourite venue in person the day before lockdown 3.0 began, and I’m so glad we did! We fell in love with it right away, and the staff have been amazing throughout the initial planning process.

They were more than happy to answer all of our questions, in particular the dreaded COVID-19 related ones, and quickly set our minds at ease. It was exactly what we wanted with a gorgeous outdoor ceremony space and a barn area for the reception, perfect for our desired summer nuptials. We’re so excited to visit again, and for my mum, who is in full planning mode, to finally see it.

Based on our venue’s advice we reserved the date, checked that our local council had a registrar available and once that was confirmed, we paid our deposit – yipee! I’ve since seen online a few brides who have booked their wedding but have been unable to secure a celebrant or registrar for their date. I’m thankful we followed the advice and checked first, it’s meant we have had a drama-free start to the wedding planning and are excited to see our plans unfold!

We’ve decided on a sage green and blush pink colour scheme and want to incorporate lots of foliage.
