WHAT’S TRENDING? Smaller guest lists, informal dress codes and no speeches are among the top wedding trends for 2024 according to a recent survey commissioned by high street jewellers F.Hinds (www.fhinds.co.uk). Two thousand couples were also asked for their thoughts on which wedding traditions are still important, and the results are in. Big-day traditions that remain in favour include the bride being walked down the aisle (53 per cent), having wedding rings (52 per cent), cutting the cake (49 per cent) and having a best man (44 per cent). In contrast, wearing a garter (nine per cent), being carried over the threshold (eight per cent), and interestingly, sticking to a colour palette (eight per cent) are losing momentum among UK nearlyweds. Looking at new trends for 2024, smaller, more intimate wedding ceremonies (29 per cent) and receptions (24 per cent) are in, as are informal dress codes (22 per cent). We’re told that couples in Bristol are also most likely to want to incorporate new wedding trends into their day. Alongside guest numbers being significantly reduced, the classic sit-down three-course wedding breakfast could become extinct with couples favouring more informal food options such as grazing tables, dessert bars, and brunch- and afternoon tea-inspired setups. 8

FUZZY FEELINGS Pantone, the global colour authority and provider of professional colour language standards, has introduced its colour of the year 2024: PANTONE 13-1023, or to you and me, Peach Fuzz! Here at Your Bristol & Somerset Wedding HQ this annual announcement is always highly anticipated, as we love to see how the wedding industry will embrace each new hue. Last year, Viva Magenta flew and we saw it inspiring many a glorious styled shoot. Indeed, thanks to the hotly-tipped colour-palette trend for 2024, we think it’ll be sticking around. We’re all loving this year’s reveal though. For us in the wedding industry, it’s a more traditional return to gentle pastels and with rusts and corals proving popular during the second half of 2023, we think Peach Fuzz will be welcomed with open arms. We can’t wait to see what the industry’s creatives do with it. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director, Pantone Color Institute says of their choice, “A cosy peach hue softly nestled between pink and orange, Peach Fuzz brings belonging, inspires recalibration, and an opportunity for nurturing, conjuring up an air of calm, offering us a space to be, feel, and heal and to flourish from whether spending time with others or taking the time to enjoy a moment by ourselves. Drawing comfort from Peach Fuzz, we can find peace from within, impacting our wellbeing.”

NICHOLAS WYLDE, WYLDE JEWELLERS

www.nicholaswylde.com Please tell us a bit about yourself I opened my first Wylde Jewellers store 36 years ago with just 12 rings in the window. I’m still as passionate now as I was back then about being one of the leading jewellers in the UK – being at the forefront of the industry, offering unique jewellery and high quality service in a relaxed, friendly way. We carry one of the largest selections of wedding rings in the South West, offering all of the popular metals like gold, platinum, palladium, titanium, and incorporating other materials including graphite, carbon, wood and glass as well as precious stones, of course. We always aim to be competitive, as we know how expensive a wedding day can be. It’s important to us that our clients become clients for life, and we’re proud to be the jewellers of choice for many families where three generations have married with Wylde wedding rings. The modern wedding is all about creating a day that’s as personal as possible. How can this idea be extended to wedding jewellery? This is where we come into our element! Our designers work with you to design rings that’ll reflect not only your big day but your journey together. We can design rings to tell your story, take a design from the wedding dress or the invitations, look at the colour theme, or cleverly hide some bespoke personalisation in the design. We can also create other bespoke jewellery for your big day, such as a necklace that’ll perfectly match the details of the dress, or cufflinks that incorporate your colour palette. We can also design items to gift to bridesmaids and groomsmen, or for anybody in the wedding party in fact! A common concern is finding a wedding ring to suit a bride’s

engagement ring. Do you have any advice? We frequently assist clients in understanding the choices they’ve made and what style will best complement their existing jewellery. Sometimes, we do need to slightly alter the engagement ring to accommodate the style of the chosen wedding ring but we do this sympathetically to the original design, ensuring the structure is secure. How can a couple bring elements of commonality into their rings if they don’t want them to match exactly? There are many ways that we can unify them, for example, you might choose a diamond-set wedding ring or one with specific design details, or even one with multicolour metals or gemstones. In each of these cases, we can take an element of this ring and incorporate it into your partner’s ring, perhaps with a subtle interpretation of the design or a single matching stone either on the outside or hidden on the inside of the band. We’re full of ideas as extravagant or as understated as you wish. We can also offer personal hand-engraving of everything from names and dates, to very personal choices like our previous commissions of frogs or the Eiffel Tower. I’ve even made a pair of rings that incorporated the decorative details of New York’s Grand Central Station. With an almost infinite range of designs and options, as well as many years of experience, we’re here to guide you. 9

SHEPPY’S CIDER Nestled between Taunton and Wellington in the heart of Somerset, Sheppy’s Cider Farm is a family-run farm that’s been lovingly crafting premium award-winning craft ciders for more than 200 years. With 90 acres of orchards to explore, there’s plenty of opportunity to be at one with nature during your day as well as capturing endless pictures. What’s more, there’s plenty of accommodation available nearby and the venue is only 10 minutes from the motorway, convenient for those out-of-town guests. The venue consists of four different spaces, depending on the size of your wedding you can hire one, two, three or the whole site. Celebrantled ceremonies can be held in the orchards, full of blossom in spring or of apples in the autumn. There’s space here for 70 loved ones but is, of course, weather dependent. Alternatively, walk down the aisle of the Old Barn as 70 nearest and dearest look on. You’ll be surrounded by rustic charm here, and you can stand on the raised mezzanine area as you say “I do.” This space, which

was once a cider store, can also seat 60 for the wedding breakfast, and allows you to invite 100 for the evening do. It even offers access to a private outdoor space. For more intimate celebrations the Stable Room sits behind an open courtyard and is ideal for a ceremony and sit-down meal for 40 or to dance the night away in with 50 loved ones. The restored Oak Vat too is a fantastic space. Created from a vintage oak cider vat, it can host 15 for those extra-intimate vows, 10 for your first meal together as newlyweds and 15 for the evening. The Old Barn is a newly converted venue that used to be a cider store. This space includes a mezzanine area and access to a private outdoor space. Finally, the main House of Cider restaurant hosts guests across two floors with a cosy bar area. At the heart of the venue stands a cider mill, which has been sympathetically restored to what is now the House of Cider. It can welcome 70 for the wedding breakfast and 150 evening guests. This characterful venue promises you a day filled with rustic charm, amazing cider and top-quality food!

Dunster Tithe Barn, a stunning and unique venue, might be ancient but it boasts all the mod-cons, is fully accessible and has its own car park. This vast structure with huge oak doors benefits from heated wooden and stone floors, a fully-equipped commercial kitchen, and a centrally-located bar. Outside, you have direct access to the linhay and extensive walled gardens (hired separately via the Village Gardens Trust). These spaces are ideal for champagne, canapés, and garden games, and are adjoined by the church and dovecote. The folly Conygar Tower and Dunster

Castle loom large, and to the north are extensive views across the Bristol Channel with nostalgic sounds of the steam railway to be heard from just a short distance away. The fully-beamed medieval Main Hall with impressive oak doors and minstrels gallery can host ceremonies for 120 guests seated. Alternatively, for more intimate “I dos,” the Meeting Room can host 60 guests seated. It’s more modern and carpeted but has been designed sympathetically to complement the Main Hall. Receptions too can be hosted in both the Main Hall and Club/Meeting Room. Maximum seated dining capacity for the former is 120, while more guests can be accommodated for an evening reception.

CROWCOMBE COURT 01984 618 478 | www.crowcombecourt.co.uk Crowcombe Court is a Grade I listed Georgian mansion located in the picturesque village of Crowcombe, around eight miles west of Taunton. The magnificent English Baroque-style house was built in the 1730s from amber-coloured bricks with Bath stone for the pilasters and frontispiece. Set in the foothills of the Quantock Hills, the beautiful grounds boast many a stunning photo opportunity from the lake to the croquet lawn. There’s also a wild woodland and guests are welcome to explore throughout the wedding celebrations. The Great Hall is a magnificent room for a civil ceremony and can seat up to 100 of your nearest and dearest. The intricate, original Italian plasterwork provides a grand and luxurious backdrop to your vows. What’s more, with flexibility in the room’s configuration you can set up the space just as you’d like it. 14

The Carew Room is ideal for more intimate nuptials, and if the sun is shining, the Gazebo is a stunning option for an outdoor ceremony set amongst traditional English country gardens. The high ceilings of the Victorian Ballroom, adorned with crystal chandeliers offers a showstopping setting for your wedding breakfast and can seat up to 100 of your loved ones. The venue’s maximum capacity for an evening reception is 150. The outdoor terrace comfortably seats 30 nearest and dearest, where they can soak up the sun. The venue is hoping to receive its ceremony licence very soon, at which point your “I dos” will be held in The Loom Room, surrounded by 80 guests.

Receptions will also take place here for 80 seated or 110 standing. The space beautifully intertwines past and present, named after the looms that were once the backbone of the mill’s operation. It has now been transformed into a warm, inviting room that still retains its original historical charm. The rustic beams and soft lighting all come together to create an atmosphere of nostalgia and tranquillity. A perfect setting for intimate gatherings, the Loom Room offers a memorable experience for all. In addition, the Wheel House, at the heart of the mill is available for intimate dinners or small gatherings. Once the powerhouse that ran the mill, it has been adapted into a cosy intimate space, with the original wheel now a prominent feature lending a historical, rustic charm sure to captivate your guests. The venue also offers a menu tasting with its gold package, and engraved padlock for the Love Bridge, plus a bottle of prosecco on your first anniversary.

REAL WEDDINGS

C

hloe and Matt met at a mutual friend’s birthday party when they were 18. There was an initial attraction but they didn’t exchange numbers until the following year after bumping into each other again at a club in Bristol. After some texting back and forth they went on their first date and the rest is history. Matt popped the question in the couple’s favourite restaurant on Chloe’s 26th birthday, much to her surprise. “It was such a wonderful experience and one I’ll never forget,” she says. Matt was so nervous leading up to his proposal that Chloe thought he was coming down with a cold! He’d taken her younger sister to help him pick out a ring a few weeks before, and she knew exactly the type of ring Chloe would like ensuring he chose the perfect fit. Chloe who’d worked in the centre of Bath would pass Tracy Park every day and always said to herself: “One day I’ll get married there.” So, when Matt asked the all-important question, she wasted no time in checking out the website and brochure, immediately booking an appointment to visit. “We met the fabulous Michaela who gave us the most magical tour of the grounds, ceremony room and onsite accommodation,” says Chloe. “We were completely blown away and my mum helped us pick our wedding date.” That date was 30th August, 2023. Here, the bride takes us behind the scenes of the big day and preparations...

SETTING THE SCENE The couple’s favourite chocolates are Lindt balls, so they chose these for their favours and popped two in a white box for each of their guests. They must have gone down well as there weren’t any left at the end of the day! Chloe sat down with their fabulous florist, Lara, and covered everything from flowers to venue styling and centrepieces together. “Everything was beautiful and fitted perfectly with my colour palette of sage green with a few white roses and gypsophila. It was everything and more, I can’t thank Lara enough,” Chloe tells us. During another consultation, this time with cake maker Helen, Chloe was able to discuss design ideas. She even had some beautiful cupcakes to taste and take home before deciding on the flavour of the ultimate big-day bake. Helen also contacted Lara to liaise on final touches to the cake, making sure it was in keeping with the couple’s theme. “Everyone loved it and the 25

flavours we chose. Matt loves lemon cake so we chose this for one of the tiers, followed by a prosecco and raspberry layer and, of course, chocolate.” All of the catering was covered by the venue. The couple were given a full menu to review back in the January and were able to taste their favourites. “All of the food was absolutely delicious – it was difficult to choose only three options! Our guests loved our wedding breakfast and were blown away,” Chloe remembers. “The team were so accommodating with food allergies and preferences too.” The couple opted for tomato and pepper soup, beef with potatoes and vegetables, and apple pie to finish (Chloe’s grandad’s favourite).

LOOKING THE PART Chloe wore an elegant, understated gown cinched at the waist with puffed sleeves and a slight split at the front. “I felt like a Disney princess in it,” she shares. She always thought she’d go for something lacey, but from the moment she tried Florence from Love and Honour on, she knew it was the one. I added a beautiful head piece and pearl veil to complete the look, started the day in white Prada heels and finished it in white Crocs. Wise lady! Matt was dressed to match the rest of his party in a grey suit with sage green tie and pocket square. “We wanted them to match, but he always stands out to me,” Chloe says. The bridesmaids were dressed in a complementary shade of sage green, in dresses with tie shoulders and a slight split at the front.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE The couple decided to keep things simple and enlisted a DJ as their evening entertainment. “Darren from The Wedding Players was absolutely fantastic. The dancefloor was full all night and he kept the mood upbeat, while taking on board everything we wanted played. It was the perfect end to our special day,” Chloe remembers.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “At the beginning of the day, we were both full of nerves but I had a fantastic bridal party around me keeping me as calm as possible,” Chloe shares. “Matt too had his groomsmen around him keeping the nerves at bay. Once we saw each other at the end of the aisle though all of our nerves went away and I couldn’t believe our wedding day was finally here. After our vows and celebratory walk up the aisle, we took five minutes alone together to let the fact that we were finally husband and wife sink in. “Thanks to the beautiful weather on the day we were able to go out on the Tracy Park golf buggy, which was an amazing experience and a great way to finish up our photos. We went all over the grounds and our photographer Andy took the most breathtaking shots with Bath and Bristol behind us. He also captured some incredible creative images of our wedding party, which we’ll treasure forever as well as making us laugh. “The whole team at Tracy Park went above and beyond for us making our day extra special. The day went so smoothly and each guest had the best time. Plus, every supplier Michaela recommended was fantastic.” 27

REAL WEDDINGS

FROM SOMERSET Rosie and Jordi styled their day in a fresh, natural palette of sage and forest greens Images courtesy of Calum Bradley Photography

Rosie and Jordi met through mutual friends at Glastonbury Festival back in 2013, and their wedding day took place 10 years later to the day, which couldn’t have been more poignant for them. During a tense time for the country, in December 2021, while we were in lockdown but permitted a day to mix with one other household, Jordi proposed in front of Rosie’s family at her home. “Safe to say, everyone needed a reason to celebrate at that time and we definitely did that,” Rosie says. Once it was safe to get out and visit venues, the couple checked out a few and although they liked them, none had the charm or

convenience of Haselbury Mill for them. “We have a rather large group of family and friends, so the fact we could accommodate everyone on the grounds for the day and night was great,” Rosie explains. “We went along a couple more times before booking to try out the food and drinks, get to know the staff and get a feel for what the day was likely to bring, which definitely made our minds up for us. The food was incredible and the staff were very accommodating.” Join us now as we find out more from the couple about 17th August 2023, W-day... 31

Be as relaxed as you can and surround yourself with people who you know will help. It’s easy to feel stressed, but handing over responsibilities to those we trust was key for us. You have enough to think about and do on your wedding day!

Having been together for 10 years, getting married felt like the natural next step. That being said, we still woke up on the day full of excitement and nerves understanding that this was one of the biggest days of our lives.

I wore a sleeveless, two-toned white and off-white lace wedding dress with a slimline silhouette and train. I accessorised with a veil, which was kept in place by a pearl hair piece.

Jordi wore a green suit with a black tie and black shoes, his look was distinct compared to the rest of the wedding party as the groomsmen wore different shades of green and each sported a different look so that everyone felt comfortable in what they were wearing. 32

Our flowers were made for us by my auntie who is a professional floral designer and does the flowers for Wells Cathedral. We used a mix of roses and gypsophila on the tables, in the bouquets and the buttonholes.

REAL WEDDINGS

We had table numbers and a table plan designed for us using the sage green in our colour palette. The place names were designed to match – sage green with leaves.

We decorated the venue ourselves in our sage green palette using balloons, candles and lanterns. We hired huge LOVE letters to sit centre stage. When lit up they made the venue look magical.

We had chicken with mushroom sauce and mashed potatoes for our wedding breakfast. The other option was a roast beef dinner with all the trimmings, plus a vegetarian alternative. We finished with a chocolate terrine and sticky toffee pudding for dessert, plus a Somerset board made up of various meats and cheeses for the evening buffet.

We had a live band who played during the evening – they were great! One of the best parts of the evening was when they invited one of the groomsmen on stage to sing Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus, which went down a storm. 33

Our first dance song was Lover Of The Light by Mumford & Sons who headlined Glastonbury on the Sunday of that year we met there.

Our photographer Calum is a good friend of ours. He truly went above and beyond, and was so accommodating.

We went on a mini-moon to Fowey in Cornwall for two nights. It was a good opportunity for us to decompress and enjoy each other’s company. We’re using some of the money we received from guests as wedding gifts to go to Lake Como and celebrate our first anniversary.

icola and Andrew originally met in college, but went their separate ways after graduation. The two became friends again in 2001 and by 2012 their relationship had blossomed into something much more. Andrew popped the question at the couple’s home over a Bonfire Night weekend. Having tried on numerous occasions to find the right time on 5th November, it eventually happened after cooking dinner for the two of them on the 6th! Nicola and Andrew were drawn to Clevedon Hall by the offer of exclusive use of the Orangery, not to mention everything else about this stunning venue. “We also wanted a location with accommodation for ourselves and our guests allowing us to have a weekend celebration rather than just one day,” the bride explains. So, that decided, they secured their date: 7th October, 2023. Read on as Nicola tells us more... 37

CATERING

Meet the region’s wedding caterers

A

dmit it, whose mind hasn’t immediately leapt to food whenever a wedding invitation arrives in the post. Or is that just us? For many of us, when we’re not eating, we’re thinking about it! So, it’s reasonable to assume that your wedding breakfast will be one of the most highly anticipated elements of your day – no pressure. What you might not have considered though is that it’s another medium through which you can express your personalities, thus making your big day uniquely you. The food should match your vibe, from formal, seated, three-course affairs, to chilled grazing spreads. And It’s not only the way you eat that can speak volumes but also what you eat. Perhaps you met at a pub for your first date: opt for a menu of pub grub classics. Maybe you got engaged in a far-flung exotic location: give your menu an international twist. The options are endless and if you pick the correct caterer, they’ll creatively work with you to come up with your dream menu, sure to keep guests satisfied and remembering your day for all the right reasons. Read on as we introduce you to some local folk who can help...

FENNEL AND TWINE

www.fennelandtwine.co.uk |

@fennelandtwine

Fennel and Twine was founded by Ben and Sarah in 2020, in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. Keen to provide Bristolians with a restaurant experience in lockdown, they started by delivering chef-prepared meal kits and homemade goods. Today, the local caterer works on events ranging from intimate dinner parties to large scale weddings. Sarah says, “Fennel and Twine reflects our passion for creating innovative menus and preparing delicious food for the enjoyment of others, and we look forward to sharing our love of food with you. We also believe in creating seasonal menus that reflect the high quality of fresh, locally-grown ingredients and reducing our carbon footprint.”

“Remember, it’s your special day so do what makes you happy rather than worrying about everyone else. They’ll enjoy your wedding regardless.” – Sarah and Ben, Fennel and Twine

DORSET FINE DINING

www.dorsetfinedining.co.uk |

@dorsetfinedining

Dorset Fine Dining, based in Wincanton, is owned and operated by professional chef Nick Holt. He says, “My passion and experience in cooking has developed over the last 20 years and I feel privileged to work in Somerset with its abundance of high-quality produce.” Nick’s career began when he trained in classical French cuisine under the first British chef to gain a Michelin Star with the Roux brothers at Le Poulbot in London. Using these methods, he’s been successful in carving out his own niche, which he’s now able to express in his work at Dorset Fine Dining. “I firmly believe that food should always speak for itself, so I never try to overcomplicate my dishes with too many flavours and elements,” he tells us. Nick and his team will use their expertise and passion for producing great food as they work with you to create a wedding-day menu to suit your exacting requirements. “We’re fortunate enough to have worked in partnership with a number of great wedding venues across the region, allowing us to know what does and doesn’t work well when catering for your guests,” Nick says. 47

LUDACRUST

@ludacrust_pizza

“Ludacrust isn’t just a catering choice; it’s a promise to craft moments that linger in hearts!” says owner Jumper Collins. “Picture the joyous chatter, the clinking of glasses, and the shared smiles – Ludacrust adds a memorable touch to your wedding, turning it into a symphony of love, laughter, and mouthwatering pizza.” The team revel in being culinary artists for weddings, creating a tapestry of experiences that you and your guests can cherish forever. “Ludacrust is amazing with music, in fact we’re a brand inspired by it. We want to work in a symphony with it,” Jumper continues.

“Plan your late-night food around entertainment times. You’ll want the food to have just started before the band has a break and still be around serving up for 30 mins after they finish.” – Jumper, Ludacrust

The team at Rhubarb & Ginger pride themselves on creating beautiful, showstopping grazing tables and sharing platters. Grazing provides a relaxed and informal dining experience that brings people together. No long waiting times or gaps between courses, guests can all dig in together. Providing catering with wow factor means Rhubarb & Ginger can curate a display that reflects the style, tone and theme of the day. The menus are bespoke, created using the finest quality ingredients and local produce resulting in fresh and vibrant displays. There are also options to include fresh foliage and styling equipment such as wood slices and apple crates. Stephanie Kenward says, “It’s so important to get the food right, so there are a couple of questions you’ll want to answer before you start thinking about what type of catering you’ll choose for your big day. First, does your venue allow outside catering? Some only allow the use of internal caterers, which will limit your choices. Also, find out about guests’ dietary requirements and allergies. Most caterers are happy to accommodate these with plenty of notice. Grazing tables can have vegetarian, vegan and gluten free sections or special platters for those with allergies.

“Just like when selecting a venue or trying on wedding dresses, it’s important to shop around and choose a caterer that’s the perfect fit. Check out their reviews and social media to ensure they can bring your vision to life.” – Stephanie, Rhubarb & Ginger

A family-run independent catering company with fantastic chefs led by James, and front of house and admin teams led by Henny and Holly, it uses local businesses to supply its produce ensuring you have the best of everything on your wedding day. “We love food too,” says Henny. “We take a lot of inspiration from the Middle Eastern style of cookery and mix it with our passion for locallycreated dishes. One of our signature sharing feasts is butterflied shoulder of lamb or sirloin of beef marinated for 24 hours with James’ special blend of warm aromatic spices, slathered in chimichurri served alongside flavoursome salads and warm flatbreads. So delicious!” Start your journey with the team by grabbing a coffee and letting them get to know a bit about you before creating a menu centred around you.

EXPERT ADVICE

first steps

HOT TOPIC This issue we asked our experts to offer those of you just starting out on your wedding planning journey some advice as you take those first tentative steps “WE DO”

Amber Packer-Hughes from Somerset Wedding Service (www.somersetweddingservice.org.uk) says: Location, location, location! Where you want to marry dictates everything else. Decide if you want a church or civil wedding, then go venue hunting. If you’ve opted for a civil ceremony, next you’ll need to book the registrars to actually marry you. Get in touch as soon as you know your date and venue. We normally take bookings up to two years ahead and summer Saturdays get filled up pretty fast. This really is crucial and we panic on behalf of the couples we meet who’ve got everything else nailed down but haven’t booked the official stuff with only a few months to go! For the most up-to-date info on all licensed ceremony venues, you should check council websites. Since we licence the venues, we list very single one in our districts. You’ll find some hidden gems that don’t crop up on the usual sources, from barns and inns, to castles and country houses in Somerset and North Somerset.

www.lisajadephotography.com

FLOWER POWER Sky Roantree from The Roantree (www.theroantree.com) says: Don’t underestimate the power of flowers! They can magically transform any space with their beauty, and we love to use the Secret Language of Flowers to add hidden meaning to your bouquets and displays. Think centrepieces, clouds, arches, pedestals and more when planning your vision. Your wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, so make it stand out with memorable floral landscapes. Wedding flowers are an investment. They’re luxurious and often more expensive than you might expect. Take this into account when budgeting for your big day and remember that they’ll be a major feature, living on forever in your photographs and memories. Finally, choose a florist that inspires you. There are many styles of floristry out there so pick a florist whose designs you love. Beyond the florals, the team putting it all together is equally as important. You’re going to be working with them for the next however many months, so make sure you like and trust them. Most offer free wedding consultations so use this to find the best match for you and your big day.

www.hannahwarmishamweddings.com

AL-FRESCO FUN Caz Champman, co-owner of Fireflower Tipis (http://fireflowertipis.com), says: A tipi wedding is a fun experience for couples and guests alike. If this is your vibe, when you start planning, find a location that allows tipis and can accommodate their size. It’s also useful to consider the access, power supply and availability of toilets, although we can organise these for you. Have an idea of budget, and particularly the amount of guests, as this allows us to work out how many hats you’ll need. Research tipi companies and find one that’s reputable and that you get on with. They’ll be on hand throughout your entire planning process. Book a site visit so you can meet the team building your tipis and discuss layout, access and so on. Then, start thinking about your theme and all the smaller details. Consider your furniture options and how you want your day to flow, as well as the catering and whether this affects your choice of furniture and layout. The tipis are fabulous lit up with fairylights and festoons, and do lend themselves to being a really flexible wedding venue. If you’re celebrating your big day in the slightly colder months we can add heaters, firepits and throws to add to the atmosphere and keep you all warm. We can fully enclose the tipis in the winter too, so they’re versatile all year round.

A DISCERNING APPROACH Craig Cheber from Booth Nineteen (https://booth19.co.uk) says: As you embark on your wedding planning journey, it’s paramount to approach it with a discerning eye. Establishing a budget is fundamental, yet flexibility is key for those who prefer the finer things. Opt for a selective guest list to ensure an atmosphere of exclusivity and intimacy. Prioritise elements that enhance your event’s grandeur, such as premium entertainment like a vintage photo booth, which blends nostalgia with luxury. We cater to a vintage style, appreciating your desire for distinction and refinement. Before you reach the wedding planning stage, why not make the most of every step and embrace your engagement? Perhaps by throwing a lavish party or having a custom photo shoot. After all, these moments are as precious as your wedding day itself. Effective communication with your partner is crucial to harmonise aspirations. Employing a wedding planner is advisable to seamlessly integrate each element, ensuring your big day isn’t just an event but a milestone. Remember, while meticulous planning is essential, the celebration of love remains central. Maintain a balance, indulging in experiences that strengthen your bond during this extraordinary period. This isn’t just a wedding, it’s an expression of your unique journey together.

TAKE NOTE Gaynor Page from Topikki Stationery (www.topikki.co.uk) says: Three things are paramount. The first is: don’t dive straight in, you’ll probably end up spending good money after bad, and subsequently breaking the budget. The second is: know your numbers. You can’t budget without doing so. And lastly: be organised. Relating each of these three points to your stationery, it’s important to gather ideas, samples and to decide whether you’ll want to follow a theme or particular palette. Creating a scrapbook or Pinterest board will help you stay focused and you’ll be able to see a common theme emerging. Asking for samples, even if buying off-the-shelf, will give you a taste of the quality of the product you’re spending your hard-earned cash on, and whether the design looks as good in reality as it does in a photo. It’s just as important to get to know your stationery designer. Are they on your wavelength, are they listening to you? You’ll probably have a rough idea of numbers but it helps to be a little more accurate right from the start. It’ll dictate your venue size, your day versus evening guest list ratio, and can significantly reduce costs when it comes to ordering your stationery. Add-ons can prove to be costly with small quantity purchases, and changes to seating plans even more so. Consider signage and other onthe-day stationery too. Remember, it’s not just about save-the-dates and invitations! Being organised gives you time and space to make the right decisions, helping you to keep track, plan, create a realistic budget and stick to it.

LOVE STORY Deb Stodgell and Jackie Aldrich from Just Ceremonies (https://justceremonies.co.uk) say: A good place to start your planning is to decide the sort of location you want to tie the knot. You get to choose the venue, but you also have a say in who conducts the heart of your day, the wedding ceremony. The time when you commit to each other, in front of those you love, for the rest of your days. If you want something personal and meaningful, not just the legal words, you might want to consider using a professional celebrant. You’ll meet them, discuss all your visions, and end up with the most personal and unique ceremony. Even better, there are no restrictions on where it takes place. We’ve conducted ceremonies in orchards with the blossom falling, in home gardens, by beautiful lakes, on farms, in a pub and very many rooms in beautiful hotels and houses. It’s your choice. Just get the legal bit done first, and then the world’s your oyster! What’s more, we never conduct multiple ceremonies a day, just you, so you’ll be our only priority.

Ring-a-ding-ding How to choose the perfect wedding ring

J

ewellery expert Sach Kukadia from 7879 shares the differences between platinum, gold and white gold rings.

What is a platinum ring? Platinum is a naturally white metal that is both harder to find and more durable than gold. It’s used in a much purer form than white gold, which is why it’s also typically more expensive. The durability of platinum is one of the many reasons it’s a popular choice for wedding rings. This is based primarily on the common belief that it is entirely scratch-proof. While this is technically true, it doesn’t mean your ring will be completely free of blemishes throughout its lifetime. Platinum is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it a fantastic choice for sensitive skin. Unlike white gold, which is commonly plated with rhodium, the absence of these alloys in platinum jewellery means you can purchase it safely, knowing that there’s a low chance you’ll have a reaction. What is a 24-karat gold ring? The other option when considering metal wedding rings is, of course, 24-karat gold. It’s a soft metal, making it easier to scratch and dent than platinum. That being said, 24-karat gold is a beautiful metal that many couples choose for their wedding rings. It has a warm, golden hue that complements every skin tone, and its softness makes it easy to mould into any shape or style. As is the case with platinum, 24-karat gold is also a hypoallergenic metal, making it another great option for sensitive skin. It also requires less maintenance than other metals with just a polish every now and then.

your fingers are usually a bit smaller when your hands are cold! Keep in mind that platinum is a heavier metal than gold, so if you think you’d be uncomfortable with a heavier ring, 24-karat gold may be the way to go. Adversely, many people choose platinum over gold because of the added weight. Which one is right for you? Ultimately, the decision is completely up to you. Try both styles to see what will work best with your preferences, budget and lifestyle.

Budget Considering you will ideally be wearing your wedding ring every day, it’s a good idea to choose something that you really like and is high quality. Since 24-karat gold is more expensive than platinum, if you’re on a budget, platinum could be the way to go. Plus, if you’re a little clumsy with your jewellery already, it may be best to invest in something slightly more durable. Shape and size The most important thing is to find a shape, metal and size that you’re happy with and comfortable wearing. Due to its quality, the best ring metals are also the most comfortable. When sizing, ensure your rings are big enough not to be uncomfortable but small enough not to fall off. Remember that

SKIN DEEP

Strictly Come Dancing star and Shakeup ambassador, Neil Jones reveals his skincare tips for grooms-to-be

O

ur grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, chatted with Strictly Come Dancing star and Shakeup ambassador, Neil Jones, to discuss male skincare. What do you suggest for grooms-to-be who are conscious about looking after their skin in the run-up to the big day? Research potential products and test them on a small part of your skin a few weeks before the wedding. If everything is good, work out a simple routine of cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising, and try to add in a weekly mask to help get your skin in shape for the big day. Keep to a routine that works for you, and drink plenty of water, as it will help massively. On the big day, use a face spray to refresh the skin in case you get a bit hot and nervous. It’s also good at taking away any oiliness or shine. Do you have a skincare routine you would recommend? I always use a face wash, followed by a clarifying toner, serum and moisturiser. My routine is pretty straightforward, and it suits my skin and its needs. I use the Shakeup Face 4Ward Multi-Action Facial Wash, the brilliant Face 4Ward Pro-Youth Serum, and the trusty Hydrate in a Hurry Moisturising Stick. I’m also obsessed with the Shakeup Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream. With a new baby and a Strictly schedule, it’s certainly helping me look like I’ve had a good night’s sleep when I haven’t. Throughout the day, I use a moisturiser or

face spray to keep my skin soft and hydrated, and then in the evening, I follow the same process. A couple of nights a week, I like to use the You Do the Mask Purifying Clay Mask from Shakeup to help banish any buildup and blemishes. Tell us about your own healthy living regime. How do you stay fit and healthy in between series and tours? Well, honestly, this is something I struggled with in the past, as you just want to rest and recover. But now I’m finding that the best way to recover is with active recovery, which means I continue in the gym but with strength and mobility because my body needs to be able to move. I’m a big ice and cold-water therapy fan, as I find it helps with my blood flow, and mental state, so I take regular ice baths and daily cold showers. I’ve also decided to reduce sugar in my life, but I’ll still have the occasional cake or dessert but no soft drinks. I now drink a lot of tea, black and herbal, plus matcha and as much water as I can, but I’ve never really indulged in alcohol or coffee. Eating the right foods gives our body the vital fuel it needs, and knowing what ingredients are in them and asking where they came from is just as important. You can still have a hamburger, but it’s about the quality. People are becoming more conscious of their impact on the environment; how can we choose products that are environmentally friendly but still good for our skin? Great question, and one I am excited and passionate about. I truly feel that if we eat and

shop more locally, it will have a massive positive impact. I know this is not always possible, but I try to search for a local farm or farmer’s shop, butcher or baker. I’m also looking into how I use my garden because we can grow so much of the food that we use to cook. It’s all about using what we have. Nature provides food in its own protective packaging, so don’t buy it if it’s in extra cellophane. Just one step at a time, day by day, small changes can help. What products couldn’t you live without? Without a doubt, it’s the Shakeup Hydrate in a Hurry Moisturising Stick – it’s an essential, and I also can’t live without my Murdock Beard Moisturiser. The new Shakeup Age Def-Eye Instant Lifting Eye Cream is also a must. It’s helping tackle those eye bags and dark circles I have right now! How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle amidst the pressures of a hectic schedule? It’s really hard, but it’s all about discipline, preparation and balance. Plan your meals and prepare them because you can’t make decisions when you’re hungry or tired. Get enough good-quality sleep and spend as much time as you can being happy with loved ones. Is there anything you can suggest to calm the stress levels during wedding planning? A cold shower! It helps you feel less stressed and brings your blood pressure down. Shakeup products are available from www.shakeupcosmetics.com and www.amazon.co.uk 71

Q&A

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the professionals HOT TO TROT What bridal looks will be trending in 2024? Krystle Worgan at Krystle Brides (www.krystlebrides.co.uk) says: We predict that floral embellishments will be huge! Think beautifully-crafted 3D appliqués, which will be both romantic and stylish. You could hint at this trend with the simplicity and elegance of Tina from Enzoani’s 2024 collection; the modern mermaid silhouette features stunning hand-beaded 3D floral lace corsages along with the neckline and has removable off-the-shoulder floral straps to complement the design. With its signature Enzoani lace train, we think she’s sure to be a 2024 hit! For the braver bride, why not combine your florals with another 2024 trend: colour? The Kelda gown by Ronald Joyce is a truly fairytale fit-andflare gown. Its appliqués cover the entire dress in an array of whimsically-coloured petals, which cascade the length of the train. A real showstopper of a gown, you also have the option to order it with a cape to really ramp up the drama. Available in ivory too, this dress sums up our love of florals that look sure to be a big trend for this year. Kelda by Ronald Joyce Tina by Enzoani MATCHMAKING •Google reviews. Checking bridal make-up artists’ verified reviews When should I start thinking about booking my make-up artist, will give you an idea of how they work from their previous clients. and do you have any tips for finding the perfect fit? Roxie Cotter from Roxie Makeup (www.roxiemakeup.co.uk) says: If you have a make-up artist in mind who you’d like for your big day, I’d recommend enquiring about their availability right away. Most artists will have their diaries open for both the upcoming and following years and in my experience, brides are making enquiries much earlier, sometimes as one of the first suppliers to secure. As a guide, six to eight months in advance is a good time to secure your date with them, booking your trial for around three months ahead of the wedding. My top tips for finding your perfect make-up artist to work with on the day are: •Instagram. The Gram is a great tool for finding potential artists and see up-to-date portfolios both shared by them and tagged by their clients. You can find artists through your venue or other suppliers you’ve booked, checking styles that’d suit your vision for your look. •Recommendations. These might come from suppliers you’ve already contacted, so this is a great way to find your match. Most MUAs have hair stylists, photographers and even venues they work with regularly and might be recommended by. 72

HEADS OR TAILS What bridal hair looks will be popular in 2024? Victoria Spicer from Tory B Hair (www.torybhair.co.uk) says: This year I’m really excited for some new looks especially the bridal ponytail. It’s taking the humble staple to a whole new level, overthrowing the familiar half updo and giving last year’s Hollywood waves second billing. Make sure it’s sleek and elegant with plenty of lift at the crown. It allows a cascade of hair down the back, drawing the eye to the nape and down the dress but keeps the face free from pesky fly-aways. It’s also perfect for all those decorative options such as veils, tiaras, vines or the accessories set to be massive this year, bows. Yes, take a fresh look at hair ornamentation with a bow, seen everywhere on the catwalks this is a great way to elevate any hairstyle you choose for your big day. As I always say, whatever you choose, keep it super-prepped with some conditioning treatments during the run-up and have a good conversation with your hairdresser about choosing the right product to hold it effortlessly for the whole day and evening.

SKINCARE 101 with Adele O ’Donoghue

Holistic therapist and SBC Skincare’s head of education shares her ultimate guide to wedding-prep skincare

A

dele O’Donoghue has gained more than 20 years’ experience working in the skincare industry, which for her all began when she trained as a holistic therapist. During her time practising the valuable techniques she learned, she felt a passion to share her practical, relatable and affordable beauty tips, which is just what she gets to do as a regular guest presenter at QVC and TVSN. Plus, as head of education for SBC Skincare she strives to ensure the brand brings relatable conversations to the forefront, ensuring everyone feels understood

and included. So, who better to turn to for advice on handling wedding stress and the toll that can take on your body, as well as on achieving that flawless complexion in time for the big day? Beauty and wellness editor Kelly Andrews quizzed Adele in search of answers. What do you love about SBC, what makes it different? SBC is a small independent British skincare brand that has an exceptional reputation within the industry. We’ve been supplying skincare solutions to the professionals for over 30 years. The trust and reputation we’ve built over that time makes me extremely proud. Every formula is made in small batches in the UK, which gives us complete ingredient traceability and quality control. SBC Skincare remains an affordable, luxurious brand with exceptional customer loyalty built upon results. What are your top skincare tips for our brides-to-be? Wherever possible, begin to take care of your skin and wellbeing sooner rather than later. Don’t make dramatic last-minute changes a few weeks before your wedding that may cause a reaction. Great results don’t rely on one facial the week before your wedding but on consistent care over a longer period until you’re glowing on your day. Try to cut out overly processed foods too. Eat a diet rich in colourful vegetables and fruits, as well as protein, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Great skincare starts from within so eat your skin beautiful. How can holistic therapy help with wedding planning fatigue and stress? Holistic therapy doesn’t have to be complex or reserved for expensive retreats. Simply having an awareness that our everyday rituals including the small habits and thought patterns could have an impact on our emotional and physical wellbeing can improve our stress levels. Taking the time to understand your own personal stress triggers and circumstances can help you to adjust to a demanding lifestyle. Changes to diet and sleep habits will improve energy levels and by prioritising yourself in these ways, your self-worth, mental clarity, and confidence will improve. 78

Breakouts are a common side effect of stress. How can we prevent and treat these so as not to jeopardise the look of wedding make-up? Try to prevent stress by introducing some self-care practices. Ensure that some of your daily exercise includes mindful stretching and meditation, yoga is always a great choice. If you have time before your wedding, try introducing a retinol into your regime. Considered the gold standard of skin care, retinols accelerate cell turnover to reveal fresher, younger skin cells and decrease congestion. Always apply in the evening followed by a broad-spectrum SPF the following day. Regular facials aren’t always within budget. Can you recommend a daily at-home self-care/skincare regime to perfect the complexion in time for the big day? You can most definitely achieve great results at home, make sure your basic regime is consistent. Always cleanse thoroughly morning and night, apply broad-spectrum SPF during the day and a daily moisturiser regardless of your skin type. Protecting your natural barrier is key to achieving healthy strong skin so look for ceremides, lipids and antioxidants within your skincare formulas. You can upgrade to salon-worthy skin care by introducing a weekly mask. I’d recommend SBC Hydra-Collagen Clay Mask to purify the skin, while combatting fine lines. To quench thirsty skin, apply one of SBC’s Moisturising Gels: Hydra-Collagen, Hyaluronic, or Propolis & White Willow for example. Use a thick layer to tackle specific concerns while hydrating thirsty skin. What are the biggest trends in skincare at the moment and what’s your favourite? I prefer proven results rather than trends, but I’m delighted to see a return to the clean skin aesthetic. I would, however, urge you not to feel under pressure to achieve flawless skin. Remember that your skin is the most incredible vital organ and feeling comfortable within it and learning to love your own is the real success. Enjoying the process of massaging your skin helps to energise and uplift you before your day begins, and think about just how therapeutic a deep cleanse can be at the end of the day. It all helps us to clear our minds and decompress.

BEAUTY INTERVIEW

Can effective skincare have an impact on mood and stress reduction? Feeling comfortable within your skin will affect your mood and stress levels, particularly if you’re suffering with a skin concern such as sensitivity or irritation. Finding a regime that not only suits your skin but brings back radiance and health is essential for your confidence. As we’re in the midst of winter, how can we protect and treat skin for the ravages of the season? Winter brings different challenges to our skin. The most important thing you can do to protect it is to apply a broad-spectrum SPF regardless of the weather. UV rays are around us 365 days a year and UVA rays that are present in light penetrate deeper into the epidermis where they disrupt the production of collagen and elastin.Look for skin care containing nourishing and repairing ingredients, such as propolis, rosehip oil and hyaluronic acid to protect and maintain the skin’s natural barrier that may be compromised by harsh winter stresses. Dry and stressed skin can really benefit from the addition of a balm, such as the Propolis & Honey Rescue Balm. Finally, indulge in some winter habits you’ll love! Our Arnica & Sandalwood Muscle Soak creates a warming cocoon to soak cold, tired muscles with a beautifully comforting aromatic.

unsettled, but a well-established sleep regime will really help. SBC’s Night Rituals range is formulated with a luxurious sleep-inducing fragrance and enriched with magnesium and silk proteins. Wedding gowns with plunging necklines and open backs are on trend at the moment. What can brides do to make sure skin shown off looks its best. Exfoliation is the skincare key to that vital glow! SBC’s Glycolic Serum is a lightweight body moisturiser that contains a carefully balanced blend of AHA’s to gently remove the dry, dull skin cells on the surface of the skin to reveal fresh, young, and plump skin cells. It also helps to prep before any hair removal, preventing in growing hairs, and of course, if your thing is using self-tan, it will ensure a radiant finish. What product can’t you live without in your beauty kit? SBC Hydra-Collagen Replenishing Cream Cleanser. Nothing else in your regime will work to optimum levels without an effective, respectful cleanser. I love the texture of the nourishing cream that leaves my skin soft and hydrated. Everything else works far better with a great base. CHECK OUT... https://sbcskincare.co.uk www.instagram.com/adeleodskincare

Dry, oily or combination skin. Complexions don’t always fit into one of these tidy boxes. Is it possible to tailor a regime to suit the specific needs of an individual’s skin? While it’d be great if life were that simple, we know it rarely is. Don’t feel the need to commit to one whole skincare range but choose your serum to tackle and visibly change your main concern such as pigmentation or fine lines and wrinkles. Look for textures that suit your skin type with specific actives that relate to your skin’s needs and finally, find formulas you can afford to change according to the season and hormonal fluctuations. How can we achieve that sought after bridal glow on the morning of? Try to set a healthy sleeping pattern at least a couple of months before your wedding, it really is one of the most important factors to ensure you’re caring for both your emotional and physical wellbeing. We understand that sleep the night before your wedding may be a little 79

Viva España! Kelly Andrews experiences the finer side of life at Hostal de La Gavina in Spain’s Costa Brava

M

y name is Kelly, I’m 42 years old, British and I’ve never been to Spain. Never. How did I manage to miss out on the quintessential Brits abroad destination? Probably because that exact connotation was all I’d ever seen of Spain: Ibiza, 18-30 holidays, and all that jazz. It didn’t appeal. How wrong was I? Let me tell you, the breathtakingly beautiful Costa Brava could not be further from all of that. Having been on my first adventure to sunny Spain recently, I’m happy to report it’s now my most beloved part of the world, which I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to honeymooners, and here’s why...

THE GOLDEN AGE OF LUXURY Nestled between two secluded bays on the Costa Brava, Spain’s less trodden coastline, S’Agaro’s Hostal de La Gavina sings with elegance, luxury and old-world glamour from every corner. Since opening in 1932, the hotel has been patronised by stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age including Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne and Peter Sellers; and, for me at least, evokes memories of classics such as To Catch A Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Indeed, Pandora starring Ava Gardner, Suddenly Last Summer starring Elizabeth Taylor and Mr Arkadin by Orson Welles were all shot here. With 74 suites and rooms with sweeping views over the Mediterranean, its effortless style and second-to-none hospitality will give you a honeymoon to remember. Comfortably ensconced in one of the hotel’s 11 superior rooms, I was very much taken with its Mediterranean romance. The balcony terrace and its breathtaking view is something I’ll never forget. From the moment I arrived and swung open the doors, I sat there looking out to sea and would quite happily still be there now. It was definitely the most difficult farewell when the time came to leave. For two honeymooners enjoying breakfast here, surely there could be nothing better. The glorious shining jewel in the hotel’s crown though is the Royal Suite,

which has played host to Spanish royalty, celebs and honeymooners alike. Stepping through its doors is akin to entering a stately home. Designed in spectacular Louis XV style, the walls are adorned with wood and silks, while Sevres vases, only otherwise found in the Louvre, decorate the alcoves. The opulent, genuine Bohemian candle-glass chandelier is the sitting room’s centrepiece and looms large above the decorative marble floor. Of course, the large terrace spanning the width of the suite is a highlight, complete with loungers and patio set ready and waiting for lazy days sipping champagne and enjoying a bite to eat. The first free moment I got during the trip, not caring a jot for the rain (which we brought with us from Blighty) I made a beeline for the outdoor, seawater pool. I’d been excited to take a dip from the moment I arrived. Bobbing along alone in the bracingly icy, buoyant waters, looking out over the bay at sunset was an experience of sheer bliss. Of course, during the warmer months with the sun beating down on it, the pool will offer you yet another vibe, but this was heavenly for me! Alongside the pool, facing the Med, is the Gavina Spa. Its privileged indoor swimming area boasts magnificent views over the bay of S’Agaro along with a Jacuzzi, two spaces for massages and treatments, plus saunas and a small gym room.

A FOODIE’S PARADISE In nearby Girona, there are no fewer than 18 Michelin stars held between 12 restaurants, including one with three, and Hostal de La Gavina is very much part of that local foodie culture. Indeed, the hotel’s signature restaurant, Candlelight, is overseen by Michelin-starred chef Romain Fornell. Renowned for its exquisite haute cuisine menu, the restaurant combines tradition and modernity in its beautifully tranquil setting where candles flicker and piano music fills the air. I had the privileged opportunity to try the eight-course Spring Collection tasting menu, which was utterly unforgettable. Dishes included white asparagus, beurre blanc

HONEYMOON REVIEW

and caviar; tortellini of langoustine and foie with Nantua cream; and squab in two firings with souffle potatoes. All was expertly paired with unbelievable wine selections by the knowledgeable sommelier. Equally unmissable is La Taverna del Mar, located on the beach of Sant Pol, just a two-minute walk from the hotel. Let’s be clear, seafood is a big deal here, as it is for the region as a whole, and this eatery will bring you the freshest and very best. It was here I discovered Catalonian delicacy sonsos, or Mediterranean sand eel. Fried and crispy it’s delicious served with a chilled glass of local white wine. Plus, the serving of wild sea bass in a sea salt crust is a wonderful piece of theatre, not to mention the perfect way to cook fish. It’s also well worth trying Galician clams and red tuna tartare. In fact, whatever the experts suggest, trust me, go with it. I’ve never eaten seafood like it and given the restaurant’s partnership with local fisherman to deliver the freshest fare, I likely never will again. For a lighter meal in between dips, head to poolside restaurant Garbi. Its light and healthy menu offers many of the delights found in the renowned Mediterranean diet. The paella here is to die for!

on Carrer Ciutadans. For dessert the final stop was the oh-so quirky, Wonkaesque Rocambolesc Gelerateria. As I was visiting during Girona’s Temp de Flors (Flower Festival) they were offering new floral flavours created especially for the occasion, which had to be tasted! If you’re a wine enthusiast, a little further out of town you’ll find Clos d’Agon (https://closdagon.com), a 15th-century vineyard based around a picturesque historical farmhouse. Hostal de La Gavina has recently partnered with it to offer guests exclusive wine experiences. I met the estate’s Nora for a fascinating tour, where I learned of the vineyard’s own micro climate, which allows it to be ecological as the wind clears the humidity creating the perfect environment for its fruit. The grapes are all picked by hand so only the best ones get through at harvest time allowing the passionate winemakers, such as Miguel, to make award-winning wines. Although the aforementioned wet weather didn’t permit us to, you do have the chance to idyllically picnic among the vines, as you indulge in a glass of the wonderful Clos d’Agon Valmaña wine with cheese and charcuterie board.

OUT AND ABOUT

TAKE IN THE VIEW

Just one hour north of Barcelona and half an hour from beautiful Girona, Hostal de La Gavina is excellently appointed for exploring the Costa Brava. I headed into the medieval city of Girona for a culinary tour and thoroughly recommend a visit. Catalans are quite rightly very proud of their local dishes and delicacies, and during the tour I had the opportunity to sample many of them. If you’re in town, do seek out a xiuxiu for breakfast. Made from an old Girona recipe these sweet treats can only be found in the city and its surroundings. When in Catalonia it’s virtually impossible not to try some jamon (Iberico ham), unless of course you’re vegetarian or vegan in which case there’s no shortage of equally divine alternative local bites. Served with some Manchego cheese or perhaps some local Catalan goat’s cheese and a glass of Cava it’s a real treat. I became addicted in a very short space of time! Girona was originally a city of traders, which is a heritage still evident in the city’s food markets. With vegetables at least three times the size of anything I’d ever seen before and more fresh fish than you could ever dream of finding in your local Morrisons – anchovies, cod tartare, sonsos – they’re worth looking in on. Paella is of course a must-have in Spain, but if you get the chance, do try Catalan speciality Fideua, made from short noodles instead of rice. Packed so full of flavour, you won’t be happy until you’ve finished the dish! I stopped at L’Arròs &... for mine, an intimate seafood restaurant

For days when you’re looking to stay a little closer to base, the Cami de Ronda coastal path (www.camideronda.com) runs alongside Hostal de La Gavina. The entire 43-kilometre stretch would take around two days to walk in its entirety, but you can enjoy a gentle stroll in stretches however you wish. I thoroughly enjoyed a short 30-minute stint along the bay, with it’s breathtaking views of S’Agaro, the Mediterranean and the historical hotel with its folly, a particular treat first thing in the morning. So, there you have it. The Costa Brava is an idyllic corner of the world, a paradise for foodies, wine lovers and history buffs alike. Whether you’re looking to relax and enjoy the luxurious surroundings, or set out on an adventure to explore the region, Catalonia has so much to offer and Hostal de La Gavina is a dream of a base.

A song of sun AND SEA

County Wedding Magazines’ editor Melissa Cullen reveals why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

W

hilst I sit here in mid-October wrapped up in a blanket, jumper, and thermal socks, my mind can’t help but wander back to earlier in the year when I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia. Ideal for those of you who are looking for a city break and a beach-side destination, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination with everything you need for the perfect honeymoon.

ARRIVE IN STYLE My Dubrovnik adventure began bright and early in the morning when I was whisked away to the airport by a private taxi from Jayride. My driver arrived ahead of schedule, picking me up in a luxury vehicle; his friendly demeanour made the journey fly by and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at our destination London Gatwick Airport. A pleasant three-hour flight later, via easyJet, I’d arrived in Croatia ready to begin my adventure in earnest. I couldn’t wait to visit the filming locations for Game of Thrones, having been an avid fan of the TV series for years, and to see what other delights the city had to offer.

A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD A brief drive from the airport and I’d arrived at my accommodation, Valamar Tirena Hotel. Perfectly situated near the beach and the Old Town, the four-star resort has everything I look for in a holiday: culture, friendly staff and luxurious rooms. There are over 208 bedrooms to choose from, many with seaside views, and I was pleased to find mine had a king-sized bed, impressive views and a walk-in rainfall shower – I could have happily spent most of my trip just in the bedroom.

you also have access to the venue’s sister hotels, home to delicious restaurants and my favourite area, the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Located inside the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel, the spa had all the luxuries you’d expect, such as a steam bath, saunas, a Vitality bar, a relaxation lounge and both indoor and outdoor pools. I spent most of my time by the indoor pool, surrounded by spacious loungers, I loved curling up with a good book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Losing track of time, I’d almost drifted off to sleep when the lovely masseuse came to collect me for my massage. I’ve suffered from neck ache for years, probably due to having a desk job, so I always jump at the chance to have a treatment. Feeling my worries (and knots!) drift away, the masseuse did a wonderful job and 35-minutes later I felt like a new person.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Amongst my friends and family, it’s no secret that I’m a fussy eater, and I often feel overwhelmed when eating at a restaurant; so, I was a bit apprehensive when I arrived for lunch at Oliva Grill, the hotel’s à la carte restaurant by the pool. In hindsight, I feel silly as the menu had so many mouth-watering options that I wanted to try them all. I opted for the carbonara pasta, which was delicious, and I couldn’t wait to come back another day to try the tuna steak that I saw several other diners enjoying profusely. For dinner, the Valamar Tirena’s buffet restaurant is a must-try. I love a buffet, but it’s hard to know when to stop, and that was the exact problem I found myself having each evening. Everything looked so appetising that I had to try it all. Naturally, I also found space for a dessert…or two.

REST AND RELAXATION

FUN IN THE SUN

One of the best things about staying at the Valamar Tirena Hotel is that

Before arriving in Croatia, one of the things I was most excited about was

HONEYMOON

Dubrovnik’s largest play area – Maro World. Ideal for all age groups, it has everything from interactive games, trampolines, and softplay zones to gaming lounges filled with all the latest tech. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop wandering around the 13 different play areas and was very tempted to take my shoes off and try the slides out for myself. With highly trained staff on-site, you can relax knowing your children are taken care of while you enjoy some me-time by the pool, or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Or if you’re a big kid like me, you can even join in with the fun and challenge your kids to a whole host of games and activities. I couldn’t wait to tell my nephews all about Maro World and I have promised to bring them for a visit soon.

A SEA OF DREAMS After spoiling my inner child, it was time to venture out and explore Dubrovnik and what better way than by boat? The marina was a short drive away, and before I knew it, I was on a private vessel heading around the Elaphiti Islands. These magnificent islands are a wonder to behold and as with many stunning locations, the pictures don’t quite do them justice. Jetting around the islands, our boat’s captain chose the perfect spot to drop anchor, giving us an opportunity to swim with the many fish that call the Adriatic Sea home. Diving near the awe-inspiring reefs and caves is a must for anyone visiting the area and is one of the many highlights of my trip.

HISTORIC WONDERS Old Town is an essential destination for anyone visiting Dubrovnik, but the best way to travel, in my humble opinion, is by electric tuk tuk. I wasn’t sure what to expect when the vehicle arrived at our hotel, but before I knew it, we were careering through the streets and mountains of Croatia. Our kind driver even stopped at Dubrovnik Bridge to give the group a moment to snap some pictures and stand in awe of the impressive architecture. With the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on me, I found myself wishing to live in that moment forever. Old Town was everything that I had imagined it to be, with streets steeped in a rich history, I could imagine various Game of Thrones characters scheming around every corner! Our guide told us about Croatia’s past, showing us the beautiful buildings and

introducing the group to friendly locals and what I’d been waiting for: Fort Lovrijenac (AKA King’s Landing!). I must have taken a hundred pictures of Old Town, but looking back, I don’t feel any of them really came close to capturing its beauty; it’s truly a location that needs to be seen to be believed. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were escorted to a cable car, which elevated us up to Srđ Mountain. Providing impressive views of Old Town and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, the sights were breathtaking. Situated at the top of the 415-metre-high mountain was Panorama Restaurant. A highly desired location, the restaurant not only has the views in its favour, but the food and drink were also spectacular. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have visited this picturesque setting, and I would highly recommend the location to anyone thinking of visiting Dubrovnik.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY For the evening’s entertainment, I was treated to a performance of a musical rendition of Around the World in Eighty Days, written by Jules Verne and performed at Lovrijenac Fort in the Old Town. Having never read the book and knowing a little about the plot, I was excited and interested to see how the story had been translated into a musical. Commissioned especially for the Dubrovnik audience, the play was full of slapstick comedy, catchy tunes and fabulous acting; it was a joy to watch and the perfect way to finish my last day. Lovrijenac Fort hosts a variety of shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s showing when you visit. A short taxi trip back to the hotel, and a couple of drinks later, it was time to hit the sheets. I awoke the next morning dreading checking out. I wanted to spend longer in my little piece of paradise and was heartbroken to be leaving. I’m looking forward to returning with my husband and showing him just how wonderful this city truly is.

Parisian elegance

Part of the prestigious Oetker Collection, Le Bristol Paris is everything you could dream of from a once in a lifetime visit to La Ville-Lumière, The City of Light. Rachel Westall checks it out...

I

f a honeymoon with the wow factor is what you’re after, you’ve found it. The iconic Le Bristol Paris is located at one of the city’s most prestigious addresses on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The hotel opened in April 1925, when the roaring twenties were in full swing. During that carefree and prosperous era, Paris attracted all the big movers and shakers from the worlds of culture and fashion: think Balenciaga, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Picasso, Mondrian and Dali. Over the years, famous clients have continued to parade through the doors of Le Bristol Paris: from Rita Hayworth to Charlie Chaplin. Today, photographers still anticipate who will be revolving through the entrance of this chic establishment. This fashionable location is at the heart of Paris, moments’ walk from Metro line Madelaine and walking distance to sights including the Tuileries, Les Invalides and Musee d’Orsay. When you want to rest your feet from city life, the indoor rooftop pool on the sixth floor makes this hotel a cut above the rest. Expect views over Montmartre and the Eiffel Tower. Utterly breathtaking. The spa, backing onto a courtyard garden, offers a menu of luxurious treatments. There are eight treatment rooms, including a private couple suite. What more could you want after a morning at The Louvre than a soothing, restorative massage?

HONEYMOON

PEACEFUL PARIS Did you know, Le Bristol was the first hotel in France to receive the title of Palace? This is a much higher honour than being a five-star hotel. The rooms really are the epitome of comfort – and they’re huge! Indulge in suites with beautiful Louis XV and Louis XVI-period furniture and original artworks. Vast marble bathrooms have roomy showers and deep tubs; many have dual vanities, Dyson hairdryers and plush toiletries. Le Bristol’s Junior Suites can be extended with adjoining Deluxe rooms to create more space for the entire family. Everyone is welcome.

WELCOME HOME Le Bristol Paris is a house of incomparable Parisian style and elegance, where you immediately feel at home. It has an extraordinary way of welcoming guests from the moment you enter. Expect warmth, conversation and even a sighting of Socrate, the resident hotel cat. For pet-owning guests, Le Bristol Paris is singular in its ability to welcome fourlegged family members. As a family-run hotel, VIP treatment is waiting for your mini me’s! Children receive a welcome gift on arrival, as well as special surprise in the room, and the concierge team can arrange a wide range of activities in and around Paris that are sure to appeal to young and old alike. There’s even a kid’s club!

THE SECRET GARDEN A favourite place of mine was the new garden - a hidden treasure where you forget you’re in the French capital. It’s an oasis of flowers and calm where each tree, shrub and flower was deliberately chosen with care by Lady Arabella Lennox – Boyd, world-renowned landscape designer.

HOME TO FOUR MICHELIN STARS Foodies’, there’s no need to leave your hotel. At Epicure restaurant, chef Eric Frechon, who holds four Michelin stars, has created a celebrated establishment that’s typically French and fabulous. White tablecloths and immaculate attention to detail, this is for special occasions. Secondly, there’s the less formal Le 114 Faubourg, for lunch and dinner, which also possesses its own Michelin star. Here, sample dishes such as hand-chopped beef tartar flavoured with anchovies, and potato wafers or Grenebloise style roasted brill, cauliflower mousseline with seaweed butter – mouthwatering. Furthermore, Café Antonia reflects a more spontaneous side of Parisian life, where you can enjoy breakfast, stop for coffee or enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of wine. Le Bristol really is a reason in itself to visit the City of Love. You’ll fall head over heels time and time again.
