NEW OUTDOOR WEDDING VENUE LAUNCHING DECEMBER 2020

Tilgate Park Weddings A VENUE LIKE NO OTHER

MAZE • NATURE CENTRE • BEAUTIFUL LAWNS • STUNNING LAKES • ANCIENT WOODLANDS • OUTDOOR OR INDOOR • CEREMONY OPTIONS

Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.

THE WALLED GARDEN

Be amongst be the first to this married in ing award-winn venue

Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours. Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines all adorned with thousands of fairy lights. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place. Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some prereception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the adorable tapir or the fun-loving meerkats.

EVENTS ARENA

The perfect location to host a large marquee for your wedding breakfast and evening reception. Measuring more than 1,000 square metres, there’s ample room for extra entertainment like a band or giant garden games and it is conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around every twist and turn. Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

es folks, it’s that time of year again where I go positively gaga over everything Christmas. Regardless of everything that’s happened this year, I refuse to let it dampen my seasonal spirit. So, with that said, I’d certainly advise you not to miss our gorgeously festive styled shoot over on page 51, created by the excellent hair and make-up artist Nadia Wyatt Hair and her team. As you may have noticed, I can’t get enough of styled shoots. Sussex’s incredible suppliers put their hearts and souls into them and the inspiration they produce is nothing short of awe-inspiring. So, we certainly have a cornucopia of treats for the eyes this issue! Be sure to stop by pages 51, 60 and 65 for 12 pages packed with big-day bliss. Wait, the wedspiration doesn’t end there. We’ve got no less than three of our readers’ big days to share with you, allowing you to learn from those who’ve gone before. Plus, we’ve chatted to the county’s florists (page 55) and venue stylists (page 69) in a bid to aid your planning. As you can tell I’m more than a tad excited about what we’ve got to show you this issue, so I shall stop rambling, let you dive in, and hope you enjoy this issue as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and I’ll see you in 2021.

Our fashion editor, Claire, rounds up some fabulous fairytale dresses over on page 81. I’m obsessed with this glamorous gold Sassi Holford design. www.kirstymackenziephotography.co.uk

d e w y l r a e N NEWS

With restrictions on wedding guest numbers set to continue, we chatted to expert Sussex-based wedding caterer, Elizabeth Caton to get her thoughts on creative wedding breakfasts for intimate nuptials. Here are her top five tips: ❤ Why not serve individual mini bottles of champagne for the arrival or toast drinks? Covid-safe and totally Insta-worthy! ❤ Rather than being brought around, canapés could be served at tables to be shared between households. This gives more scope for them to be served on smaller cute dishes, such as little slates, vintage china or framed photos of you both. ❤ If you’ve had to reduce the size of your guest list, you may find you have more to spend per head. Reflect this in your menu with something extravagant – lobster all round?! ❤ Whoever’s organising the toasts could pre-record messages from guests who are no longer able to be with you on the big day, and play them at the reception. Alternatively, if they possess super-human organisational skills, they could even have a giant Zoom arranged with virtual guests dressed in their finery to raise a glass to the bride and groom. ❤ As your loved ones now have to sit down at small tables with fewer neighbours, the reception could feel a bit fragmented. Avoid this by encouraging interaction and introduce an activity to bring everyone together such as a quiz. This could be about the bride and groom, photos of guests as kids with everyone guessing who’s who, or on topics you're particularly interested in. Sloe Drinks Co is a super-cool mobile bar service, ideal for the al fresco or festivalstyle wedding. Based in Sussex, the team brings the best of the county direct to you from locally crafted gins, to craft beers and ciders on tap with classic cocktails, as well as a selection of rums, wines and other spirits. The company’s creator, Marie, has owned vintage caravans for more than five years, having always loved camping, festivals and travelling: “They certainly appeal to my adventurous and romantic side,” she says. Deciding to turn her passion for entertaining and enthusiasm for vintage caravans into a business, she converted a 1970s Sprite caravan into a mobile bar and Sloe Drinks Co was born. You can take advantage of the current micro-wedding package offer for 15 guests: five drinks per guest for £550. And there are also offers available on 2022 wedding bookings from £15 per person. elissa was 15 minutes late for her first date with Jim, leading him to believe he’d been stood up and mistaking a speaker for a seat in his distress. “He quickly realised though that a quarter of an hour is practically early for me,” Melissa laughs. Despite her time keeping and his seating incident, they both had a wonderful time and set their second date for Valentine’s just a few days later. “Jim met me off the tube with a rose and a bag of dolly mixtures,” Melissa explains. That’s true love for you! Jim proposed in the kitchen of their new home where, having returned from collecting the engagement ring, he found Melissa in her pyjamas reading a magazine at the kitchen table. “I was absolutely blindsided as I always presumed I’d see it coming. Such was my shock that he had to propose again once I’d regained the power of speech!” she tells us. St John’s Church, Dormansland, is the bride’s family parish and her dad sings in the choir there, so this was an easy choice for the ceremony venue. All they needed then was a reception location nearby. Melissa explains, “Buxted Park was one of the first venues we looked at and immediately knew it was right. It’s a beautiful Georgian house with history spilling from every room, and the stunning grounds reflect the countryside we grew up in.” We couldn’t wait to find out more about the couple’s big day, which took place on 27th July, 2019…

SETTING THE SCENE

“Celebrate the best day of your life exactly how you want to, with some glitter on top.”

“We didn’t have a particular colour palette or theme in mind, we mainly just went for bright and us,” Melissa shares. The pair both work in film and television, so they wanted to incorporate elements of this. The table names were all labelled as cinema screens with a mini lightbox on each one. They created their table plan as a movie poster with their wedding as the main event. This was stuck to a board and surrounded by Hollywood-style makeup mirror bulbs and foliage. The centrepieces were a combination of high and low arrangements with either faux-blossom trees seemingly growing out of popcorn boxes, or gin-bottle vases adorned with reels of cinema tickets. The super-cool place names, designed by Jim, were in the style of old-school cinema tickets decorated with clapperboards. The groom also cleverly designed all of the table stationery, including menus, in the Art Deco style as a nod to Hollywood’s golden age. When it came to the wedding favours the couple opted for Tunnocks Tea Cakes and Bars as the retro wrapping tied in well with the décor. Hydrangeas were the showstoppers of the floral displays, being readily available in July. “They were all incredible,” the bride says. Her bouquet was a mix of peonies and sweet avalanche roses to match the two in her hair. As well as lining the aisle, giant balloons also decorated the exterior of the church where they were anchored in gypsophila-filled churns. Each guest was asked to take the balloon at the end of their pew to the venue with them, where they were put to use decorating the reception space. Creativity certainly prevailed at this wedding. With the combined talents of the couple and their wedding planner, Laura, there was a wealth of fabulous elements that made the event a memorable one. Melissa made a faux foliage backdrop with a neon sign for one of the venue’s alcoves. This was used for cards during the day and in the evening it was transformed into a doughnut bar, which the couple had plumped for instead of a cake. Pinterest provided a wealth of inspiration from the personalised napkins to the peg board labelled: “Because no love story ever started with salad.” Another alcove was used to house big rose gold tubs filled with glow sticks, for guests to grab on their way to the dancefloor. No corner had been left without care and attention; even a set of shelves between the reception room and bar had been given the five-star treatment with framed photos, unicorn candles, lightboxes and various knickknacks.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Buxted Park supplied the delicious catering, which the pair had a chance to sample at a menu tasting – “This was a really special and fun experience in 33 

itself,” Melissa tells us. They selected sausages and mash, including vegan and vegetarian versions, rounded off with a sticky toffee pudding dessert. The bride has a top tip relating to the evening buffet: “Make sure it’s set out somewhere people can see it. Drunk people want food, but aren’t good at locating it!” The evening ice cream was supplied by Vera the Vanilla Pod, whose team was very accommodating with a huge range of flavours including vegan ones. “There was a queue all evening,” Melissa recalls. And as you may have gathered from the centrepieces, Melissa is a huge fan of gin, so the venue set up a gin bar on the steps leading out onto the terrace, following the wedding breakfast, to freshen everyone up.

REAL WEDDINGS

LOOKING THE PART “I didn’t think there’d be many options for me to buy a dress from a boutique, not being a conventional size, so I was on the hunt for a bespoke dressmaker,” Melissa shares. However, her best friend suggested she try on some beforehand to get a feel for shape and colour. As soon as they entered Cambridge Bridal Studio Melissa saw the one on a mannequin and was ecstatic to discover it was the right size. The beautiful blush gown hadn’t been something she’d considered, but it was love at first sight. With the dress being the main event, the bride opted for simple accessories, including a pair of Carrie Elizabeth earrings, gifted by the groom on the morning of the wedding. Melissa says, “Jim always looks up who I follow in Instagram, then researches accordingly. I’m very lucky.” In the evening the bride switched up her look changing into a bespoke evening dress by Felicity Westmacott. “It was a great opportunity to unpick the confetti from my hair and have another event, as it had all been kept a secret to surprise Jim. I still felt like a bride, but one that could do the Macarena and high-kick to Footloose without falling on her face!” Jim’s suit was bespoke Ben Sherman, which made him feel like a million dollars, and his floral Ted Baker tie and pocket square complemented the bride’s dress beautifully. The groomsmen wore navy three-piece lounge suits with pink ties. The hue of the pretty bridesmaids’ dresses fitted in well with the rest of the bridal party attire, and most importantly, they passed the comfort test.

TIME TO CELEBRATE The couple knew what they were looking for to entertain their loved ones: an acoustic walking wedding band. “We scoured YouTube until we found Wandering Hands, who took the day to another level. They created the most wonderful moment during reception drinks and lit up the room from the start of the wedding breakfast,” Melissa recalls. Guests were also thoroughly entertained with mini golf on the terrace, a photo booth and a glitter bar. Apologies from the bride to housekeeping who had to deal with the aftermath of the latter on pillows the next day! A DJ set rounded out the night. Disco Fever offer an online facility to upload your own playlist and detail requirements for the first dance, last 20 minutes of songs, last song and so on, allowing for perfectly curated wedding music. “Our party was just epic!” Melissa concludes.

“I still can’t believe it actually happened. I’ve never felt so happy and so loved.” 35 

REAL WEDDINGS

SUCH A

perfect day

Jemma and Joe said “I do” at Cissbury Barns on 14th September, 2019 Images courtesy of Dominika Miechowska Photography

J

emma and Joe were introduced by a mutual friend while working at the local department store. Jemma says, “We shared a love for live indie music and kept bumping into each other on nights out.” We fast forward 11 years and the pair had just returned to their hotel in Iceland, following a disappointing trip to see the Northern Lights. But, sadness soon turned to elation as, much to Jemma’s surprise, Joe got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. The beauty of Cissbury Barns was the main attraction for Jemma and Joe when it came to selecting a wedding venue. “There’s plenty of space inside and out, all contained by gorgeous old brick walls and surrounded by fields,” Jemma explains. The clincher though was the fact that the venue is dog friendly, as the couple’s French bulldog, Frank, goes everywhere with them. “He’s our fur baby so he had to be able to participate,” says the bride. Working as a wedding photographer (www.jemmarylah.com), Jemma has seen it all when it comes to couples’ big days. So, we couldn’t wait to find out more about her own… 39

Having Frank there with us for the ceremony and photos was really special for us. He even had the very important job of carrying the rings!

My two nieces were my little bridesmaids, and wore gorgeous little blush pink floral dresses accessorised with glittery Converse.

We have a passion for Lego, so for our wedding favours we decided to turn all of our guests into Lego Minifigures. We spent hours in the Leicester Square store trying to gather up all of the right pieces! We used lots of lovely vintage bottles for our centrepieces, filled with green foliage and brightly coloured wild flowers. We also decorated with Neom ‘Happiness’ scented candles, so now whenever I smell the fragrance I think of our wedding day.

We had a huge floral chandelier hanging from the beams in the dining barn and a beautiful rustic floral arch in the ceremony room. 40

We had beautiful handmade blackboards for our table plan, welcome sign and itinerary. Plus, I’d purchased some red vintage cinema numbers to sit on the tables, so we opted for a simple 1, 2, 3 instead of names.

REAL WEDDINGS

The bouquets were sensational! They featured plenty of bright, colourful wild flowers in pink, blue and yellow with lots of foliage.

We opted for a barbecue feast during the day, and for dessert we hired an ice cream van that served a selection of retro-style lollies and ice creams. The evening food was pizza from the amazing Mobile Pizzeria, served straight out of their Land Rover.

We set up a selection of vintage funfair games, including a coconut shy, tin can alley and wire buzz.

I arrived at the venue in a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible. It was my wedding gift to Joe, and was a self-drive hire so both he and my dad were able to drive it.

I wore the beautiful Carter by Lovers Society; a full lace dress with Bardot illusion neckline and puddle train. I went out looking for a supersimple crepe dress, but the more I tried, the more I discovered that look wasn’t working for me. As soon as I saw my dress hanging up, I knew it was the one.

Joe wore an amazing Paul Smith suit in a blue and green check. He accessorised it with the designer’s traditional striped pocket square and opted not to wear a tie in order to feel more casual. 41

We hired a bouncy castle and the funniest part for me was getting on it with all of my hens. I’m pretty sure there were plenty of tears of laughter!

The venue and waiting staff really went the extra mile to make our day special. Nothing was too much trouble and they accommodated every single one of our requests. Plus, our photographer, Dominika, did an absolutely amazing job with our photos. We love every single one.

In the evening we had two casino tables with croupiers to entertain guests before the live music and dancing started.

We might have gone a bit over the top with our honeymoons! We took a mini-moon in Devon a few days after the wedding, but for the main event we couldn’t agree on where to go. Joe wanted to take a week’s snowboarding holiday, I wanted a week in the Maldives. So, we did both! My good friend Suzanne at Designer Travel arranged both for us and she didn’t disappoint.

In the evening, our friends’ band played live music, which was a particular highlight of the day for me.

Romance blossomed on the football pitch for Eloise and Rebecca Images courtesy of Fiona Mills Art Photography

loise and Rebecca started out as rivals, playing for opposing football teams, but it was the good-natured pitch banter that eventually brought them together. The pair knew from their very first date that they had something special and thoughts of marriage where already in their minds. So, in February 2018 with Rebecca’s mother’s engagement ring tucked safely away, Eloise began to put her meticulously planned proposal into action. She’d chosen a secluded spot nestled in the woods, where some strategically placed rainbow-coloured arrows pointed the way to a lone tent sitting beneath

a tree covered in hanging wooden hearts. Furnished with blankets, cushions and fairylights, complete with a cheese and champagne hamper, this special scene was set. When she arrived Rebecca found a little box inside, which contained a note entitled: “why I love you.” The last page contained a very important question, and as she looked up there was Eloise holding something extra shiny. The nerves where a little bit too much for Rebecca so she closed her eyes before whispering, “yes.” Join us as bride Eloise shares more memories of their beautiful July wedding…

icro weddings are the way forward this winter, so shoot coordinator and make-up artist Nadia Wyatt, along with her assembled team of wedding professionals, set out to create an intimate set up with a nod to Christmas. “We had an open fireplace, faux-fur blanket, feather shrug, reading room and wine by the fire. All finished off with dancing against a warm backdrop of fairylights and sparklers under festoon lighting,” she explains. Remember, although small in size, it’s still your big day.

HELLOpetal!

Sussex’s floral designers give away their professional secrets for pulling off breathtaking wedding-day blooms

F

lowers are absolutely integral to shaping your big-day theme, and can’t help but bring an air of romance to proceedings. Whether you’re all for the more is more approach, or prefer a minimalist interpretation, you might have some burning questions when it comes to this element of your to-do list. So, we’ve rounded up some of the county’s talented wedding florists to offer some assistance.

SHOWSTOPPERS Q: Bouquets, centrepieces, accessories… what haven’t I thought about yet? A: You can have flowers anywhere, so it’s often worth getting your florist to visit your venue, so they can work out what's possible. An often-overlooked area is the signing table. Flowers here can look amazing in photos and you can usually transfer them to your top table saving a bit of money too. Some areas of your venue may be perfect for displays like floral arches or suspended flower/foliage clouds. These would give your reception a real wow factor. Have you thought about all your guests? Do the mums need a corsage or thank you bouquet? What about your flowergirls? Is a posy right for them or would a flower crown, wand or pomander work better? Also, think about what kind of tables there’ll be at your wedding breakfast and what style of arrangement would work best – something big and bold, small and simple or perhaps something high? Of course, budget plays a part in all wedding decisions, but it’s definitely worth talking through your ideas with your florist. All we want to do is make your day as perfect and as beautiful as it can be. Bella Timbrell, Arabella Floral www.arabellafloral.com

WINTER WONDERLAND Q: I’m getting married in the winter, what big-day bloom options are available?

www.kelsiescullyphotography.com

A: There are some beautiful large-headed flowers available in the winter. Most brides are pleasantly surprised when I tell them they can have chrysanthemum blooms in a varied colour scheme. Delicate amaryllis are also an option, which I think are the best of all wedding flowers, perfect for winter celebrations. Then there’s a small colour palette of hydrangeas still available too. There really is something for everyone – plenty of stunning complements for the gorgeous berries and roses of this season. Theresa Jocelyn, Flowers of Eastbourne www.flowersofeastbourne.co.uk @flowersofeastbourne_

@brambleandbelleflorist

DRESSED TO IMPRESS Q: Will my venue-type or style have a bearing on my choice of flowers? What are the rules? A: Firstly, take a good look at your venue. Look at the size and style and how it’s decorated, then think about the palettes that will complement your surroundings. If it’s a rustic barn without much natural light, keep the colours lighter. Barns suit a more relaxed style of arrangement, such as the just-picked-from-a-meadow look. Large manor houses can still have the natural look, but floral displays may need a slightly more formal style, keeping the palette elegant and focusing on just a couple of colours. Consider the size of your arrangements versus the size of the space. If it’s a large venue with high ceilings, bigger displays will be more suitable. It’s better to have a few key arrangements, rather than several smaller ones that the space will swamp.

A THEME COME TRUE Q: How can I reflect my wedding’s theme in my flowers? A: Flowers are the perfect way to bring your vision to life. The choice of colour palette, textures and type of floral arrangements will be the most important and impactful elements when considering how to bring your wedding theme to life. For an intimate autumnal or winter wedding theme, I’d suggest using rich copper and rust tones, as well as deep velvety burgundy with lots of different textural interest. I’d also recommend investing in one large statement piece to create a focal point and to fill a space beautifully. This image shows our floral columns created for an intimate autumnal wedding theme. They can frame your ceremony area or provide a stunning backdrop for your reception and your photos. A similar effect can be achieved with spring foliage and blossom. A MOMENT IN TIME Q: Is there some way I can keep my fresh-flower wedding bouquet forever? A: Yes absolutely! Preserve your flowers after your big day and either have your whole bouquet designed to sit inside a bespoke box frame or perhaps have just part of it in a frame and have some paperweights created for friends and family too. Ideally your flowers will be received by the preserver within a couple of days after your event while they’re still fresh. They’re then photographed and the bouquet carefully dismantled for all the flowers and foliage to be preserved in 3D. Meanwhile, you’ll be invited to choose your design and frame. I always work with my brides’ ideas, as well as the wedding’s theme, to create a design especially for each one. Marina Hudson, Actual Flowers www.actualflowers.co.uk

SEASONAL STUNNERS Q: How can I reflect the season in my wedding flowers? A: For a summer wedding beautifully soft country-style bouquets brimming with scented seasonal blooms such as peonies, roses and freesias are perfect. Eucalyptus is also a gorgeous addition, to bring in some greenery. Likewise, for the spring what could be better than a bright, lifting colour scheme to welcome in the season? When it comes to the autumn, nothing sums up this time of year as well as sunflowers. These large sunny blooms can’t help but make everyone smile! When the winter closes in, think warmth with a stunning red palette complete with fairylight backdrop paired with lights in vases for an extra wow factor. Ivory, white and gold also work a treat for a mid-winter wedding, adding a bit of glamour. Annabel Grange, Butterflies & Bows www.butterfliesandbows.co.uk

lindon House is a beautiful Georgian-style manor house wedding venue. "I wanted to showcase the venue and extensive grounds by combining a boho feel with a colour palette that complemented the heritage colours of our rooms," says shoot coordinator Susan Quinn of Quinn Events, the venue's in-house caterer. Being a fan of venue stylist To Have and To Hire Events' work, Susan sought the advice of owner Sara on how she could bring this vision to life. "Sara developed the mood board and suggested a classic boho look to demonstrate the flexible styling

options for this elegant venue," Susan explains. While it may be synonymous with the great outdoors, the popular boho theme can, in fact, be equally at home in any setting. "Slindon House is a beautiful example of this," Sara comments. So, she enlisted the help of some trusted local suppliers and the wheels were in motion. "We used natural woods and pale tones to complement the Blue Room; and burgundy tones with gold and dark oak furniture to enhance the Red Room," Susan tells us. We're in love with the results!

Wedding ceremonies can be held in the beautiful Grand Hall, or outside within the grounds.

The Grand Hall can accommodate up to 140 people and the beautiful conservatory acts as a focal point for canape receptions. The extensive grounds, also featuring forest areas and an ornamental garden, offer a number of beautiful spots for a luxury marquee ideal for large parties or more intimate gatherings. There are also two beautiful churches in the village, St. Mary’s (COE) and St. Richard’s (RC), for those who wish to have a blessing or a church wedding.

ith this vivacious project, the team from Beneath The Canopy set out to create something vibrant, lots of fun and jaw-droppingly gorgeous. “As a lover of all things music festival I wanted to add elements of that, while keeping the main focus on the fact that this look is totally transferrable to wedding-day styling,” says the company’s Elise. As you’ll no doubt gather, colour was the most important element of the aesthetic, and we love how the eye-catching tasselled jackets offer the perfect balance to Willowby by Watters’ delicate tulle dresses. And can we just take a moment to appreciate the beautiful botanicals, coordinated to match the headpieces and palm fans? “We need to talk about the disco balls… I love them!” Elise says. With the sunlight bouncing off of them as they hang from the trees in the woodland chapel, they certainly bring the party vibe with an extra touch of whimsy.

tyling your venue is where your theme and palette really come to life. In fact, the venue in itself can be a reflection of your chosen vibe. So, here comes the fun part. But, if the thought of filling your space with all sorts of dreamy décor leaves you feeling giddy, as you emerge, dazed and confused, from the rabbit hole that is Pinterest, join our experts as they share their insider expertise.

www.chrisgilesphotography.com for To Have and To Hire

“Size is everything,” says venue stylist Sally Gallis of Luna and The Lane. How large the space is and how big you want it to feel are the first two key considerations. “Do you want your venue to feel intimate and cosy or grand and spacious?” she says. Ceiling décor in historical properties may be restricted due to fixtures, fittings or simply preservation of original features, but as Sally points out, it’s definitely worth finding out, particularly if you’re considering a micro wedding: “High ceilings will make your venue feel larger, but for a more intimate feel, see if you can incorporate hanging décor such as drapes, foliage and lighting to create the illusion of it seeming lower.” Sara Ellis of To Have and To Hire Events is in agreement: “If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity for some ceiling décor, keep it simple with some warm fairylights.” But don’t despair if it does turn out to be off limits, “Why not add some height by adding trees to your tables instead?” Sara says. Historical houses are often filled with an eclectic mix of antique furniture, polished timber and ornate design so, Sara recommends: “Keep your décor classic and opulent. Include warm colours such as antique gold, deep burgundy or warm pink.” Sally concurs: “Be mindful of the venue’s aesthetic and choose textures, shapes and colours that will enhance and complement the space.” You also have the ideal opportunity to include a statement piece or focal point or make the most of one architecturally already there: “Try adding a neon sign to a mirror,” Sara says, or “a floral installation or backdrop creating the wow-factor,” Sally suggests.

Marquees, tents and tipis all, quite literally, offer you a completely blank canvas, allowing you to be as creative as you choose. However, the sheer volume of empty space may leave you feeling overwhelmed. Sara advises, “Break this up with greenery and colour. Don’t be afraid to push the boundaries. Anything goes, whether it be a pop of colour, classic style, or something edgy.” Charlotte Bolwell of CLB Weddings & Events also has some top tips when it comes to filling the void: “Consider what you’ll be using the space for – perhaps a chill-out zone, glamping or a bridal prep area.” Once decided, you can furnish accordingly. Charlotte continues, “We like to use furniture that can be transformed for different purposes. Apple crates are great as you can stack and dress them to create the perfect bridal beauty station, then afterwards scatter them around the tent to use as blanket storage or to hold bubbles and chocolates. You can even use them as low tables for a chill-out zone for your guests.” The beauty of being under canvas is that you’re surrounded by the splendour of the great outdoors, while enjoying the comfort of being protected from the elements. Natalie Morson of The Elysian Styling Company says, “Embrace it by bringing the outdoors in, and using natural elements such as wood, greenery and natural colours.” Indeed, the type of structure you opt for will help you further in this quest, Sally of Luna and The Lane says, “You can opt for a cosy intimate feel or go luxe with glass-roofed structures, which feel spacious and open to the elements.” Lighting is a key consideration when crafting your venue from the ground up. Sara says, “A firm classic for a tipi is the hanging lantern, this is a great way to add a fun element and a pop of colour.” Whereas fairylights are a firm favourite for Charlotte: “Wrap them around the central pole, along the sides where they meet the top and around the entrance too. This creates a romantic twinkle when the sun goes down, adding a cosy feel to the tent.” Candles too create a wonderful ambience; however, Sally says, “Do check that you’re allowed to light them!” When considering a change of atmosphere for the evening she adds, “The addition of uplighters can create a colourful party vibe.”

When it comes to styling a barn venue, “the sky’s the limit,” says Sally. “Barns are great for rustic and bohemian styles, but you can have lots of fun giving it luxe elements too,” she continues. Sara comments, “If your barn venue as a vaulted or beamed ceiling, then you’re in luck! This is the perfect opportunity to decorate it with something eye-catching to suit your theme. Draping is a firm favourite, but floral chandeliers and foliage are a definite trend that’s here to stay. Barn doors are also a fabulous space to add some personalisation – hang floral decorations, large initials or welcome sign for a grand entrance.” As barns are usually spacious and just one room, Natalie advises you divide and conquer: “It helps to split the space up into areas and ensure that none of them get overlooked. So often, the guest book gets missed, or the favours are forgotten. To avoid these issues, I suggest using props to give each spot the wow-factor, drawing the eye in through interest, depth and height.” On the subject of open space, Sally tells us, “Low centrepieces and floral runners will get lost in a vast room with tall ceilings like a barn. It may be a good idea to add some height to your table décor using floral arrangements in tall vases or plinths.” By nature, barns can be pretty dark, but that doesn’t mean they need to be dingy. Work with colour to bring your venue to life. “I love contrast, such as chandeliers, metallics and bursts of colour,” says Sally. “Working with a blank canvas means that you can go wild with your palette, there’s very little that can go wrong,” she explains.

In truth you could go online and see hundreds of reasons why an intimate wedding is a good idea. 74

of how many people are watching. The best option for you is an individual day styled just for you. With some guidance and magic words, we can turn any day into a memorable one. You just need to be brave and have the courage to have the event that’s perfect for you. In short, an intimate wedding can be any style you want, it’s you that gives it the magic, not the size of the guest list. So, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and be bold! EXPERT ADVICE

COME FLY WITH ME

I love the idea of a dove release. How would this work on our wedding day and is it unkind to the birds in any way? We recommend a release of five doves on your wedding day. The first pair represents your onward flight together and the extras symbolise those loved ones who’ll be watching over you, there in spirit. Released either by hand or direct from a pretty presentation cage and heart-shaped basket, both decorated in your chosen flowers, these beautiful birds rise and circle to orientate, then head back to their home in Hove, often arriving before us! Their natural homing instinct serves them well and it’s easy to see they’re well-loved, expertly cared for and receive the very best of treatment. For us, their welfare is paramount, so we’d give you a full refund in the event of adverse weather conditions where their safety becomes an issue if released. If you’re still worried, you’re welcome to arrange a visit to see our feathered friends at home before you book. Viv Lambert, www.lambertsdoves.co.uk

PLAY ON

We’d love some live music at our drinks reception, but don’t want anything too intrusive as guests will want to chat and catch up. What would you suggest? Once the formal part of the day is over, the world is your oyster as far as music goes! The ultimate romantic instrument, the harp provides beautiful light background music, perfect for the drinks reception. It’s not too loud and not too soft – ideal ‘music wallpaper!’ Surprisingly portable, it can be played outside if the weather is fine and is always a conversation piece. I have a vast repertoire to suit all ages, from classical to chart hits, so your guests can be entertained while they enjoy their bubbly, canapes and conversation. Margaret Wilson, www.harpmusic.co.uk

AHEAD OF THE CURVE What style of wedding dress would best suit my hourglass figure?

Naturally, a woman with an hourglass figure has a bust and hip that has the same or almost the same measurements, with a waist that comes in smaller – it’s to do with the proportional breakdown of numbers when taking body measurements. The goal for an hourglass shape includes choosing a gown that flatters your curves. If you’re looking to show off your bust, waist or hips, then choose a fit and flare. This captivating style hugs the body and flares off just below the hips, as well as highlighting the waist and creating that perfect figure look. Another option would be a ruched waist, which will highlight that area and be the focal point – the perfect design for a bride looking for a flattering gown. THE CROWN AND THE David Emanuel shares his top tips to help you say “yes” to the dress

n w o g F

ashion designer and broadcaster David Emanuel is a much-loved household name, regarded as the don of bridal fashion since creating that iconic wedding dress for Lady Diana Spencer 40 years ago. CWM’s Kelly Andrews caught up with him at the launch of Bromley Brides’ new Wonder Room to find out about his plans for celebrating this career milestone.

Dave Benett for Getty Images

What advice would you give to a bride-to-be setting foot inside a bridal boutique for the very first time? Try to keep an open mind and be objective. Think about what you’ve got at home. You might have an evening dress and you love the shape. So, why don’t you think about that same shape for your wedding dress? A lot of brides get completely wound up, particularly the ones who’ve over-shopped. When they tell me they’ve tried on 200 dresses, there’s clearly something wrong there. Equally, they might come in with a set idea – “I want skin tight, I want sexy.” It’s interesting, as it changes. I’ll say to them, “Put it on and look in the mirror. On your wedding day, are you going to be comfortable?” Then of course, you’ve got to take the time of year into account, where it’s happening, where the party’s going to be and all of that.

90

What do you need to consider before you start shopping? It’s all to do with the personality and character of the bride. If she’s a showy girl, that’s lovely, put her in a showy frock, but if she’s quiet, put her in something more modest. I go back mostly to Say Yes To The Dress, when the first question I ask is: “Do you have a budget?” She might say £3,000 and we can stretch to various styles with that. Then she’ll say, “I want more,” at which point the mother pipes up saying she’ll throw in another thousand. If they’d just said that in the beginning it would have been an

FASHION INTERVIEW easier task. I tell you, that show kept me on my toes!

It doesn’t have to be fantasy; you need simplicity for longevity.

What are the common pitfalls that brides should avoid when dress shopping? Invariably, brides will go on the internet and they’ll see these very glamourous models wearing these fabulous dresses, and they’ll rip pages out of magazines, but are they being realistic? Look in the mirror and be honest with yourself, try to be objective. I know it’s difficult, but look at yourself and think: what do I really want? You’ll go through various stages; you’re not going to get the first dress. I’ll suggest something, and the bride might say she couldn’t possibly, but I’ll insist she slip into it. Once she realises how great she looks, we go down a different path. So, keep an open mind, and let the girls at the boutique do their job, which is to make you look wonderful. You’ve got to trust them. Don’t forget: they’ve dressed hundreds of brides.

Do you think the Covid-19 pandemic has had an effect on the way brides think? I think, if anything, it’s got to completely focus the brides, because they’re under pressure. They might have booked, then have to unbook, and they’ve got to replan. It’s changing by the day – guest numbers are limited, but you know what? That’s not a bad thing actually. Let’s think about it: you don’t have to worry about auntie Flossie and uncle Albert who you only see once every two years! All that pressure is gone. You really should want just the people who love you to be there. Then, if you want to have a bigger party next year, or whenever, the heat is taken off. It should be a joyous time, enjoy it.

Based on your experience on Say Yes To The Dress UK, what’s your take on the ever expanding bridal entourage? Too much! You might have six people, with six points of view, six different tastes. No, we’re concerned with the bride. Sometimes, even the bride’s mum can’t get it, so you’ve got to rely on the very good stylists at your boutique, who are there to help you.

Knight Classical

What are your tips for creating the ultimate timeless look? You want to keep it relatively simple, but dramatic. You see, an iconic wedding gown has to have something about it – Diana’s was a 25ft train. Well, it needed drama, this was St Pauls, it was enormous, you couldn’t do a simple, quiet little dress. Or like Meghan’s gown – the story on that dress was the embroidered flowers from the Commonwealth. Big veil, but that was her message, and that was a simple dress.

Tell us about your involvement with Bromley Brides. When I found out (owner) Becky Griggs had been planning to expand and was still going ahead, I thought that was really courageous. I was blown away by the store the first time I came here, it looks great. I like people who take risks, good for her! The Wonder Room is camp and mad, great for a party. Get the dress, then celebrate it! It’s the 40th anniversary of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress next year. Do you have any plans to mark the occasion? I never thought I’d be sitting here talking about 40 years! I don’t know where the time’s gone, it’s like a dream. A lot has happened in my life, and this is a very exciting time. We’ve been bombarded by people wanting to do interviews and documentaries, so we’ve got to sit down, let the dust settle and go through everything. When I travel the world, designing Diana’s wardrobe is my calling card – everyone knows who I am because of it. Everywhere I go, people talk very highly of her, and it’s exciting that people still want to do something for her. What was it like to work with Princess Diana? She was the sweetest girl, as divine as you saw

her, no different. It wasn’t all done for the TV and press, she really was lovely. One time we were doing a fitting at Buckingham Palace and we didn’t have our van with us that day, so she asked us how we were getting back. We were planning to call a black cab, but she insisted on taking us herself. She had this little Ford, so we climbed in - Diana driving, me in the front and Elizabeth in the back. It was hysterical, when we stopped at traffic lights, people were aghast. There she was, giggling, it was so much fun. That’s what I remember about her, the fun. I was very fortunate, very honoured and lucky to design several foreign tours for her, and there were a lot of clothes to be done. She’d ring on a Monday and say, “Hi, it’s me.” She’d go on to say that she’d got something special and had nothing to wear, so I quickly had to think. We’d turn up the next day with sketches and some fabrics, and by Friday it was all wrapped and sent for her to wear that evening. We had to turn it around fast, and do you know, without fail she’d always say, “Thank you so much, I know you worked so hard.” It was touching. If you’re lucky along this road, you’ll meet one or two special people and she was one of them. You’ve dressed plenty of famous bodies over the years, who was your most memorable? I was in Paris, as Elizabeth Taylor couldn’t come to London for a fitting. She was at the George V Hotel in a huge suite, and I put her in a chocolate brown Chantilly lace cocktail dress. She looked fabulous and I didn’t have to put one pin in it. She threw open the double doors, and burst through them crying, “Franco, Franco, what do you think?” There he was, Franco Zeffirelli, the film director! All I could think was: “OK David, keep calm.” He loved the dress, but, she said, there was just one little problem. She would be wearing it to the White House and might have to dance with the President, but wasn’t sure she could. With that I grabbed her and spun her around the whole suite. “I think I can dance in this dress,” she said when we stopped waltzing. Listen, when those eyes fixed on you it was all over. She was special, she was real. It’s magic, private moments like that, which make your career, they’re precious. As I’m saying it, I could be back there, it seems like yesterday. Yet, I can’t believe… 40 years!

LIP SERVICE

My lips get dry and cracked in the winter. What’s your advice on the best way to combat this so as not to ruin the look of by lipstick?

WINNING WINTER LOOK

Becky says: There are lots of lip scrubs and masks on the market. I’d advise getting a few to use every so often, ensuring you’re gently exfoliating dry skin and then putting lots of moisture back into your lips with the mask. Before applying make-up I always apply a thick lip balm, giving it plenty of time to nourish my clients’ lips while I do the rest of the face. This means that when I start applying lipstick, any dry, cracked areas should be nice and soft. When buying lipstick, make sure you look for moisturising formulas to help add hydration. I start with a lip liner all over, which will stay put all day. So, instead of topping up your lipstick when needed, I recommend just using a lip balm to freshen up allowing the liner to take care of the colour.

Can you suggest a showstopping make-up look for my fabulous winter wedding? Danielle says: Winter is all about rich, warm colours, so why not incorporate a beautiful bold lip into your make-up look on your wedding day? I’d recommend a gorgeous warm red, such as diva by MAC. Complement this with a dewy foundation for a healthy glow, and soft eye makeup finished with kohl eyeliner, instead of liquid, for the ultimate showstopping look.

uty BeaQ&A Local professionals offer advice on looking your big-day best

FREE SPIRIT

We’re planning an informal boho wedding, how should I wear my make-up to complement this vibe? Alison says: Boho weddings have a soft and romantic feel inspired by nature and the great outdoors. So, if you’ve opted for this theme your make-up should look effortless – it’s all about fresh-faced natural beauty. The look requires minimal foundation, so get started on a good skincare routine several months beforehand to achieve glowing skin. Your complexion should look dewy, so opt for a non-matte foundation. Dark smoky eyes are

a classic boho look and eyeshadows in earthy colours are great for achieving this. Smudgy eyeliner can then be intensified by adding a dark eyeshadow over the top. If you prefer a more natural eye make-up, use lighter shades of shadow or bronzer across your lids and leave off the eyeliner. Either way, use a lash curler before applying mascara to really open up your eyes. Instead of blusher, I’d opt for bronzer to give the cheeks a healthy glow and maybe even a touch of highlighter on the top of the cheekbones. Keep lips neutral with a touch of gloss on top. Finally, a spritz of finishing spray will keep your skin looking dewy and your make-up firmly in place as you skip through the meadows!

TRIED AND TESTED R+Co Waterfall Moisture + Shine Lotion £25, www.beautyrebel.store/rco

Michael Van Clarke 3 More Inches Volumising Mousse £12.50, www.vanclake.com

“The amount of styling product I go through is staggering. Not because I use a lot, but because I can’t find anything that does what it says on the tin, without making my fine hair greasy, and weighing it down. So, ‘here we go again,’ I thought as I tried this, the next on my quest. But, as soon as I squeezed Waterfall from the tube, I knew it would be different, feeling somehow light in texture. Plus, the fragrance was divine! Designed for fine to medium locks, my hair drank the lotion in, and by the time I blow-dried it, it was super-shiny, light and manageable, with no oily residue to be found. For me, it’s the holy grail of styling products!” – Kelly Andrews

“I’m a bit of a mousse novice, so I’m surprised that the first one I tried I love! It definitely gave my normally fine hair volume. I could feel the difference straight away, from the first use and blowdry. It left my hair soft and silky with no residue left behind – you wouldn’t even know I’d used any product! This is perfect for those brides wanting a naturally voluminous look and feel.” – Danielle Harvey

Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler 5-in-1 Treatment, £34, www.philipkingsley.co.uk “This new product from Philip Kingsley promises to strengthen, tame and add shine, even to hair that’s hard to manage. My short locks tend to stick out in every direction, but with a small amount of the treatment, I found it very easy to style. I tend to use when my hair’s wet, but it’s also great for styling and taming frizz on dry tresses. My hair smelled great, and I even received a few compliments. I’d highly recommend it.” – Melissa Barker

GREAT HAIR DAYS SheaMoisture Sugarcane Extract & Meadowfoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Styler £14.99, www.boots.com “Call me a cynic but I’m always a bit dubious of anything billed as a miracle product. However, this leave-in conditioning treatment does exactly what it claims to. Made with a blend of natural botanicals it does it all – detangles, nourishes, softens, adds shine and the list goes on. I put it to the test when I was in dire need of a trim and it worked like magic taming my unruly hair, making it easy to style, frizz-free and fragrant. I didn’t even have to use my heated tongs to tweak it into shape – hallelujah!” – Sarah Reeve

We put the latest hair-styling products to the test

Fudge Professional Salt Spray £11.50, www.beautybay.com “There’s nothing better than achieving natural beach waves from the salt, sun and wind from a day spent at the seaside. However, since we can’t just pop to the ocean every day to achieve this desired look, Fudge Professional Salt Spray does the same job. My hair is on the fine side, and I love adding texture and waves to add volume and movement. The lightweight texture offered me medium hold, without turning crunchy and drying out my locks. It’s so easy to use, simply spray onto towel-dried hair, give a slight scrunch with your hands and leave to air dry. My top tip would be to plait your hair after use to create more defined waves.” – Olivia Gibson 97

A unique antioxidant complex and illuminating minerals work to revitalise and re-energise your skin as you sleep, resurfacing cells for a noticeably fresh glow. I didn’t take long to be converted – as soon as I’d pumped the product out I was swept away by the beautiful scent of citrus and orange blossom, which put a spring back in my step. It disappeared into my skin instantly and left it feeling touchably soft and smooth even before I’d left it overnight. Priced at £34, it’s available at www.mioskincare.co.uk

WINTER’S TALE

BEAUTY NEWS

The Tom Ford Soleil Neige 2020 collection celebrates the incandescence of winter – think light dancing through frost. The new range offers even more ways to achieve beautifully glowing skin this season with light-diffusing shades, and colourcorrecting radiance. I love Balm Frost (£44) for high-performance lip nourishment, and the Eye Color Quad (£68) containing four versatile, multidimensional shades – perfect for a glowing and dramatic winter-bride look. BELIEVE IT OR NETTLE

Hot on the heels of its sell-out Nettle Venom Anti-Ageing Cream, Heaven Skincare has unveiled its Nettle Venom Eyes. This latest addition to the range is 100 per cent plant-based and contains founder Deborah Mitchell’s patented Nettatoxin, which works in the same way as bee venom, but uses only vegan-friendly ingredients. It’s designed to ease puffiness and dark circles around the eyes while relaxing fine lines and wrinkles. When you apply the nettle venom around the delicate eye area, the body’s natural defence kicks in. Of course, there’s no damage, but the skin is tricked into thinking there has been and starts healing, leaving behind tight skin that feels renewed. Priced at £55, it’s available at https://shop.heavenskincare.com

WINTER TRAVEL

With travel rules and regulations constantly changing, newlyweds and nearlyweds will be looking to the UK to celebrate post-vows, and minimooners will be spoilt for choice when sticking to destinations closer to home; here’s two to whet your appetite: Situated deep in the Scottish Highlands, 57 Nord occupies a dramatic position between three ancient sea lochs surrounded by the majestic Kintail Mountains. With floor to ceiling windows that frame the panoramic views stays here are largely elemental, particularly in the autumn and winter months when the weather is ever more startling. Cosy up by the fire and watch the weather roll in with a dram of specially selected whiskey from the honesty bar and tuck into the hamper of artisan goodies. There are ample wet weather activities for epicureans: from the neighbourhood Fairy Tale Distillery to the internationally acclaimed Talisker; fine dining at Kinloch Lodge or fresh crayfish cooked at home from Duncan, the neighbourhood fisherman. At night watch the famous Eilean Donan castle light up from the cottage and spend the evening on a tour of the night’s sky with the help of the in-house guide – how romantic!
