I love gin so when this Cotswolds Dry Gin Essence landed in my inbox, the latest offering from The Cotswolds Distillery, I was keen to try it. It's a full-strength gin (ABV 46%) designed to reduce the amount of alcohol required in a gin and tonic and gin-based cocktails, whilst at the same time retaining the intensity of the flavour. It's made using ten times the botanical concentration of the company's award-winning Cotswolds Dry Gin and is non-chill filtered so the oils from the botanicals are retained, which causes a pearlescent cloud to appear when ice or tonic is added. It's available to buy online at www.cotswoldsdistillery.com and their three Cotswolds-based shops located in Broadway, Bourton-on-the-Water and Shipston-on-Stour.

Couples planning a winter wedding later this year will love Shaughney and Adam's special day at Manor by the Lake in Cheltenham featuring an elegant silver, white and grey colour theme with frosted seasonal touches. Images courtesy of Phil Webb Photography

Shaughney Louise Loveridge, 26, and Adam Mark Loveridge, 28, married at St Bartholomew’s Church, Gloucester, with a reception at Manor by the Lake in Cheltenham on 4th November 2019.

REAL WEDDINGS

S

haughney and Adam met at work when they were both teenagers. “Adam has a fantastic sense of humour and I loved his jokes,” Shaughney tells us. “We added each other on social media, swapped numbers and arranged to meet up outside of work and have been together ever since.” The couple became engaged during a holiday to New York for Shaughney's birthday. “It was our first full day in the city and we were both jet-lagged so decided to explore Central Park,” Shaughney tells us. “Adam had always planned to pop the question next to the fountain featured in the Home Alone movie but he got stage fright because there were so many people around! His second idea was to rent a rowing boat for a trip on the lake in Central Park. He would not let me have control of the oars and ended up rowing us into a hedge! He then started searching through his bag and said ’I can't get down on one knee but...‘ at which point I interrupted him. Because he is a joker and had been winding me up for years pretending to get down on one knee in a restaurant and other places, I said ’oh don't think about doing this again!‘ At that exact moment, he had the ring box in his hand and was gobsmacked at my response! We both started laughing and then Adam asked me to marry him.” During his proposal preparations, Adam had confided in some of Shaughney's closest friends regarding the engagement ring choice. “My best friend, who became my maid-of-honour, accidentally revealed that Adam was planning on proposing but didn't tell me when, where or how! So it was a lovely surprise,” Shaughney says

SETTING THE SCENE “Adam's father and stepmother got married at St Bartholomew's Church and Adam is very close to his father so we wanted to have our ceremony there too,” Shaughney tells us. “Adam grew up in Churchdown where the church is located and I always wanted a church wedding and walk down a long aisle so we couldn't have chosen a better option. The idyllic setting on top of Chosen Hill is simply magical.” When looking for a reception venue, the couple wanted a large function room with a simplistic white interior and stunning grounds where they could capture glorious photographs of their special day. “The lake at wedding venue Manor by the Lake proved to be a big attraction for us,” Shaughney reveals. “We also liked the games den where Adam and his groomsmen could grab a drink, listen to music and play pool. We didn’t want the rooms to feel like those in a hotel and this romantic venue didn't disappoint! We only viewed two other places which didn't compare so we both knew then that it was the one for us.” The couple arrived at their wedding in style. “We always wanted an old-fashioned, convertible car so we hired a diamond white Beauford Convertible lovingly named Barnaby which featured black running boards and beading. It had an immaculate cream interior with faux-fur rugs and a black mohair soft top and was styled with silver ribbons. Our bridesmaids’ car was a dark blue BMW 7 Series with a silver ribbon running down the bonnet.” The couple's silver, white and grey colour theme with winter wonderland touches included large white circular hoops as centrepieces styled with white roses to tie in with Shaughney's bouquet and hanging tea lights suspended from the centre of each one creating mood lighting. Lanterns were placed at either side of the top table filled with fairylights and ivory rose petals and their table names were after landmarks in New York where they became engaged. “The table plan itself was presented on a large silver ornate mirror with silver calligraphy writing and our order of the day was a smaller version of this,” Shaughney describes. “Our elegant place names matched our invitations and other stationery presented on pearlised card with a silver glitter border and tied with dove-grey ribbon. Each place name was displayed in a clear bauble holder which also held pretty silver mirrored confetti. I had also created our menu cards to tie in with our theme in a shimmery dove-grey shade 21

with the food choices printed on ivory card.” The couple decided to donate to Cancer Research and give their guests badges as favours because Adam’s mum and Shaughney's grandmother have both battled with the disease. “We paired these with personalised Love Hearts sweets in grey organza bags with silver wooden name tags attached,” Shaughney explains. The couple fed their guests a variety of mouth-watering options prepared by the team at the venue including pan-roasted chicken supreme and a black bean, sunflower and flax seed burger served with crushed pea guacamole and sweet potato fries as main courses. “The delicious desserts included a trio of lemon tart, chocolate trifle and dark chocolate terrine. We also had our showstopping grey and white four-tier wedding cake with sticky toffee pudding, chocolate orange and prosecco and raspberry layers. During the evening, we opted for a Mexican feast of chicken fajitas followed by chocolate-dipped strawberries and a popcorn machine and candy cart,” Shaughney says. The cake stood centre stage on a silver sequin tablecloth surrounded by tea light votives and scatter crystals, as did the pimp your prosecco and guest book. They also had a large white twig arch framing the entrance to the ballroom, and fairylights cascading from the ceiling. “Adam and I added bunting to the twig arch printed with Mr & Mrs Loveridge and chose dove-grey organza chair drapes featuring a crystal buckle that complemented the organza table runners. I also decorated the staircase with 30 vases containing LED candles which looked so romantic.” The couple wanted plenty of flowers incorporated into their special day. “We hired a 6-foot floral hoop to use as a photo backdrop and the wonderful team at the venue provided large foliage and floral hoops draped from the ceiling,” Shaughney describes. “My ivory bouquet and my bridesmaids’ posies were very similar, the only difference being that mine included diamante sprays and was much

larger. They all featured avalanche roses, freesia and gypsophila while the groomsmen each wore a single white spray rose and fern buttonhole tied with a silver ribbon. The corsages were a single white spray rose teamed with white freesia and gypsophila, and bundles of gypsophila were hung from the pew ends in the church. There was also a long floral arrangement placed on the top table and foliage wrapped around the staircase in the manor house.”

LOOKING THE PART Shaughney chose the dress style no 1751 by Kenneth Winston. “I had already tried on more than 40 gowns before this one but as soon as I put it on, I knew it was the one,” Shaughney tells us. “It was a tight-fitting style with a sweetheart neckline, long train, an illusion back and it was decorated with crystals. I accessorised it with a cathedral-length veil trimmed with lace embroidery, diamond teardrop earrings, a delicate hairpiece and ivory sheer heels decorated with jewels. My mother-in-law gifted me a blue and silver bracelet as my something blue.” Adam and his groomsmen wore navy suits with grey and white check waistcoats. “Our groomsmen wore navy ties and grey pocket squares whereas Adam wore a silver satin tie with a matching pocket square,” Shaughney explains. “Our beautiful bridesmaids wore silver satin multiway dresses with silver shoes and matching clutch bags.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE During the ceremony and the drinks reception, Shaughney and Adam hired a pianist to perform instrumental versions of their favourite songs. “We also hired a DJ and a dancefloor because we both love to dance and thought this would be the best way to get our guests up and mingling! They loved the varied selection of music and we also hired a photobooth which was a massive hit!”

AFFAIR

Rosie and Harrison’s micro wedding at Lapstone Barn in Chipping Campden was styled with simple white and green touches with splashes of pink Images courtesy of James Merrick Photography

Rosie Chanel Atkins married Harrison James Atkins on 4th November 2020 at Lapstone Barn in Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire.

R

osie and Harrison met on a dating website. “My friends know that I’m a big Harry Potter fan so I had written in my bio on my profile that it was a must that a potential date also likes it!” Rosie tells us. “I received a message from Harrison saying ‘how about this for a chat-up line, I was in the movie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’. At that point, I jokingly said to my friend that I was going to marry him! We enjoyed the first date and instantly felt a connection. We liked the same movies, had a similar sense of humour and both want a secure family life.” The couple became engaged during a trip to Florida. “I had begged Harrison for three years to agree to a holiday in Walt Disney World, Orlando and he finally gave in, knowing that it was my favourite place in the world!” Rosie tells us. “On our third night there, we had tickets to Disney After Hours at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park where only a limited number of tickets are sold so that guests can enjoy the park

when it closes with no queues. Just as it was beginning to close, we queued to have our photograph taken in front of the Tree of Life. When it was our turn, I could feel Harrison’s hands shaking as he suggested that we have a photograph taken facing each other (which I thought was odd because he isn’t usually into posing for photos!) He then got down on one knee and popped the question! I don’t think I said ‘yes’ for the first minute of him being on his knee because I couldn’t stop crying! When I finally composed myself, and we embraced, a roar of cheers and clapping followed, and it was only then that I remembered we were in front of lots of people! For those few minutes, it felt like it was just Harrison and myself and that he had created the magical moment just for us.” Here, Rosie tells us all about their micro wedding with 13 loved ones at Lapstone Barn that was decorated with chic green and white touches dotted with pops of dusky pink. 27 

Once we had booked Lapstone Bar n, we knew that the restrictions that were in place as a resu lt of the pandemic would impact the number of guests that we could invite so we didn’t want to hold back on some wow-fac tor decorations. Our stylist, The Cotswold Wedding Company, worked their magic in the venue. auren and Darren met in a nightclub in Bath. “The bad dancing must've attracted us to one another at first!” Lauren says. “When we met up again, we just clicked straight away, had plenty to talk about, lots in common and we got on really well so we haven’t looked back since!” The couple became engaged during a holiday in Riviera Maya, Mexico. “Darren proposed to me on 8th May 2017 one evening after dinner,” Lauren tells us. “We were on a jetty on the beach! It was a total surprise and I didn’t have a clue that he was going to do it. He had the ring inside a box in his sock! I didn’t notice because the dress code for dinner for men was smart trousers! The date wasn’t meant to be significant in any way (with neither of us taking notice of the date whilst on holiday) but we seem to have a thing for the number eight because we got together on the 8th, engaged on the 8th and married on the 8th.”

SETTING THE SCENE “We had visited Stanton Manor on a couple of occasions including a wedding fair when we were still in the early stages of planning our wedding and we thought the location was great, the grounds were beautiful and we liked the fact that it was a hotel which was key for us because our family members would be travelling from all over the place,” Lauren explains. “Other deciding factors were that it had a marquee, and that along with the luxury of it being a manor house, it was rustic-looking in places to fit in with our theme.” The couple seated their guests at eight round numbered tables and guests' names were presented on a table plan displayed on an easel. “We decorated this with a flower garland which looked really pretty,” Lauren tells us. “Other flower arrangements that we had were a large one for the front table in the ceremony room which was then transferred to our top table for our wedding breakfast. Each of our five bridesmaids carried a posy of pink roses and gypsophila while my bouquet consisted of peonies, roses, blue delphiniums, gypsophila and foliage,” Lauren describes. “Both of our fathers, our best man, usher and page boys all wore buttonholes that matched the bridesmaids' bouquets.” The couple's centrepieces were displayed in fishbowl vases stood on mirrored plates. Each one held a tall candle tied with blue ribbon and inside were some artificial pink and white roses mixed with crystals. “We also added a hessian table runner to complement our rustic theme and scattered wooden hearts on the tables,” Lauren tells us. The couple chose to give their guests chocolate truffles as favours packaged in laser-cut boxes. They made activity boxes for the children containing wedding-related activity books and pens, sweets and bubbles. “We gave the younger ones some white chocolate buttons, cuddly toys and finger puppets to keep them occupied during the speeches!” Lauren tells us. “The talented team at Stanton Manor provided our delicious catering,” Lauren explains. “We had tasting days at the venue ahead of our special day when we 33

got to pick our choices from the menus on offer. We decided on a traditional set meal (with an option for our vegetarian guests) followed by an evening buffet. We also had canapés and prosecco just after the ceremony and finished the evening with our mouth-watering layered buttercream cake complete with a 'Mr & Mrs' cat cake topper (we have two cats who we love to bits!) The flavours of each sponge layer were strawberry and white chocolate, jam and cream sponge and salted caramel. My top tip is to have some cake straight after you've cut it because I didn't get a chance to have any more after that! Our florist kindly liaised with our cake designer and added fresh flowers on the top and each layer." The couple chose plenty of other décor to style their day with. "I loved our pink, blue and white lanterns suspended from the ceiling in the marquee and the bunting strung around the edges of it," Lauren describes. "We displayed jars of flowers decorated with hessian and twine and made our postbox for our cards. We upcycled a vintage mirror by removing the glass and

creating a picture board decorated with photographs of us. We also had a large photo frame displaying the words 'Lauren & Darren's Wedding' with a selection of props beside it so that our guests could have their picture taken. There was also a welcome sign, a recycled pallet listing the timings for our day, topiary trees on either side of the marquee as guests walked in and fairylights which looked romantic."

LOOKING THE PART “I chose a full-length gown called Palmer by Sottero & Midgley,” Lauren tells us. “I fell in love with it straight away because I adored the Swarovski crystal detailing on the back and the train. There was the option of lifting and attaching it underneath the back of the dress which was very handy for the evening. I teamed it with a pair of Swarovski crystal earrings (to match the detail on the dress) and a necklace that I borrowed from my mum (which also added my something blue). I wore a simple, mid-length veil to not conceal the back of my dress, an elegant hair clip and some embellished shoes."

The couple chose slim-fit, light-grey suits for Darren and the groomsmen which they teamed with dusky blue ties and tan shoes. “Darren didn’t stand out too much from the others, he just wore a different buttonhole,” Lauren says. The couple had five bridesmaids. “The two younger ones aged 10 and 12 wore blush pink dresses while the three older ones were in dusky blue styles which were all similar with detailed bodices and chiffon floor-length skirts,” Lauren tells us. “They all wore silver shoes and had their hair styled in a relaxed half-up, half-down look decorated with flowers and pretty accessories.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE The couple hired a violinist which Darren organised. “Although it was a windy day and the sheet music kept blowing away, she was excellent and it created such a lovely atmosphere,” Darren tells us. “Lots of our guests said that it was a wonderful touch and I also selected the songs for her to play.” 35

“I strongly recommend to all couples to book a videographer, especially to capture the speeches.” – Lauren

THE

WARDROBE WALLED GARDEN WEDDINGS

A newly launched wedding and events venue in the heart of historic Salisbury.

A marquee will be positioned in the beautiful garden (your choice of style) and we can accommodate up to 150 guests. For smaller numbers a reduced sized marquee is available.

The Wardrobe is a secret hideaway located to the rear of the Rifleman’s Museum. It is situated in the tranquil setting of the cathedral close and the wonderful garden leads down to the banks of the river Avon. With the rolling countryside beyond, it is difficult to imagine a better location within the Salisbury city limits for any outdoor event, be it a wedding reception, celebration or garden party.

The on-site caterer is the award-winning Vanilla Catering & Events. Vanilla’s key ethics are attention to customer service and the use of top quality local ingredients. These result in bright, modern food styles presented with attention to detail in an unfussy yet friendly manner. A bespoke menu is created for each client and a complimentary wedding planner is provided to run your special day. An interesting fact: did you know why we are we called The Wardrobe? The original building on the site was constructed in 1254. It was rebuilt in the 15th century and was used to store the robes of the Bishop of Salisbury; hence it was known as the “Bishop’s Wardrobe” or “The Wardrobe”!

The walled garden is totally enclosed and private covering over half an acre. It also has numerous specimen trees including one of the finest copper beach trees in Wiltshire. The walled garden can be privately hired for your wedding, party or event.

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC Our experts answer your questions

VINTAGE VIBES

I want to arrive at my wedding with my bridesmaids in something that’s going to wow our guests – can you help? Meet the expert: Hannah Arnold is the owner of Doris, a 1964 split screen VW Camper van with a cream and white curved interior seating up to six passengers – perfect for weddings! She is based near Salisbury and travels across Wiltshire and some of Hampshire and Dorset. Hannah says: At Doris Days Out, we ensure that every wedding is extra-special. From ribbons in a colour of the couple’s choice to a bottle of bubbly on ice, we can tailor-make celebrations to suit each

couple’s requirements. Doris makes a great backdrop for Instaworthy photos with her two-tone white and champagne colouring. She was born from a vintage relic and has since been lovingly restored into a cool, retro form of wedding transportation. The chauffeur can willingly stop at a special spot along the route for photographs and the team are happy to stay on longer at each wedding reception to enable further pictures to be taken and give guests who might have missed the arrival the chance to meet Doris. SNAP HAPPY

We’re planning a Wiltshire-based wedding and would love a photographer to capture it all on camera in a natural, relaxed way - can you help? Meet the expert: James Donovan is a Swindon-based wedding and portrait photographer with more than 20 years’ experience. James works with a second shooter and the most up-to-date equipment to achieve top-quality photos. James says: When choosing a photographer, it’s important to remember that they’ll be telling the story of your special day through amazing images that will be treasured for a lifetime. Once the day has been and gone, it’s the images that you’ll be looking back on. From the very first contact, I build a story of the wedding day by getting to know the couple and their venue, chosen theme, colours and plans. I enquire who the bridal party and family members are in preparation to capture wonderful images. It’s important to consider which package you’d like. You may want your images on a USB stick or presented in a beautiful wedding album, most of which are storybook-style albums. Top tip: When viewing samples of photographer’s wedding albums, ask to see a full one and not just their best shots from different weddings. Discuss what style of photography you want, for example, formal or relaxed, candid or a bit of both. I prefer to capture a

wedding in an unobtrusive, relaxed way whilst including some lovely bridal party shots and group images. Top tip: Ask whether there’ll be one or two photographers on the day because having a second shooter provides you with full coverage of the getting-ready session and final preparations, and adds a different perspective to your wedding story. Let your photographer know how long you require them for, for example from the preparation through to the first dance and evening party. You can decide to book them until after the speeches or cutting of the cake but make sure that this is agreed in writing before the day. Top tip: Determine whether the final images provided will be in high resolution for quality purposes. You may want copies in a lower resolution for social media. BOHO BRIDE

We’re getting married this summer in an intimate outdoor ceremony and I would love some ideas for my bridal dress? Meet the expert: Donna McCahill is the owner of Gloucestershire-based bridal boutique Posy & Pearl stocking designer bridal gowns, bridesmaids’ dresses, occasion wear and flowergirl designs, plus a collection of bespoke bridal headpieces and jewellery that are handmade on-site. Donna says: For an intimate outdoor wedding, something informal would work perfectly like a boho-style dress with simple spaghetti straps or a soft, floaty A-line gown with a short train. Consider a design with a pastel undertone, for example, rose or blush, topped with a soft layering of delicate ivory lace. With the uncertainty of the great British weather, you could opt for an overlay that can be removed like a lace bolero that’s still delicate and informal but adds an extra layer for warmth. ICING ON THE CAKE

We’re having a micro wedding this summer yet still want a fabulous wedding cake! It will only need to feed 15 guests so what do you suggest?

Anna says: For a micro wedding this summer, I would suggest ordering a delicious semi-naked or sponge cake fully covered with buttercream. There are so many delicious flavours to choose from and the beauty of hosting a micro wedding is that a seven-inch cake will be plenty for 15 guests with some to spare. Alternatively, you could have a two-tier cake with one five-inch and one seven- inch layer. The seven-inch tier could be eaten at the wedding and the smaller one could be frozen to enjoy at a later date with family and friends. Summer berries are in abundance during this season and look fabulous decorating a cake. Fresh flowers also look beautiful and can be coordinated with the bouquets and table decorations. You can either keep it simple or mix the two - the combination of flowers and berries looks sensational. Even though your cake will be smaller than usual, it should still be the centrepiece at your reception. Using a decorative cake stand or a log slice to present it on will provide the finishing touch and height can be added by the addition of a striking topper available in all shapes and sizes. Ribbons and bows and all manner of decorations are also available and I offer a personalised service in which all of these details are discussed ahead of the day to ensure that you have your dream cake. Party LIKE IT'S Ways to entertain at weddings large and small

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT

2021!

LET'S CONNECT: 01235 511 170 | www.silverbirdentertainment.co.uk/home www.facebook.com/DJwithBands

Adam Denton is the owner and managing director of Silverbird Entertainment based in Oxfordshire providing tribute acts, live bands and DJ hire throughout Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and the UK. He tells us, “when working with clients planning their big-day entertainment, I like to get to know them and the type of wedding they are planning so I ask them a few questions to start. Why have they chosen their particular wedding theme? Do they want their guests to be dressed in the chosen style and how many guests are they expecting? The trend for micro weddings at the moment doesn't mean that entertainment has to be on a small scale – we offer everything from solo singers to a full seven-piece band. It's important not to forget about the music and entertainment during the ceremony and drinks reception as well as the wedding breakfast and evening event. A solo singer performing the Bridal Chorus in a 1950s theme or a vintage trio like The Candy Girls all dressed up can make a wonderful choice for during the ceremony.

Stroud-based Bees Knees Barn Dance Band have plenty of experience playing at weddings. Accordion player Norma tells us that this type of wedding entertainment can be enjoyed by all ages making celebrations a truly memorable experience. She says, "I can provide solo background music on the accordion at any moment during the event and for small gatherings, we can perform with just two (married) people playing the accordion and guitar. In between dances we play a selection of traditional and well-known tunes."

ALL THAT GLITTERS

Jeff Lippman is the owner of Cheltenham-based jewellers Metal and Stone specialising in creating one-off bespoke pieces within each customer's budget. Jeff tells us that he is often asked ‘what’s the most beautiful piece of jewellery you have ever created’ and one of them is his Nova wedding and engagement ring set. The symmetry, balance and beauty of these pieces, in which the two rings interlock to form, in effect, a single one, is an example of Jeff’s harmonious perfection of design. He tells us that, “the centre stone usually ranges between three-quarter carat and one-carat in size, and can either be a diamond, as shown here or almost any other gemstone according to the couple’s budget. I can make this in gold or platinum and the centre engagement ring is available to be ordered either separately or with the matching wedding ring. It can even be worn on the right hand as a dress ring and for customers who already have their engagement ring, we can create a compatible wedding band in this style. This design is exclusive to me and is not available elsewhere from other jewellers.” To make an appointment with Jeff at Metal and Stone, call 01242 570 570, visit www.metalandstone.co or send him a message at www.facebook.com/bespoke.goldsmith

He tells us that with many different options now available to grooms and their groomsmen, choosing the perfect suit can be rather difficult! Too Faced Melted Matte Liquified Long-Wear Lipstick, www.toofaced.co.uk, £20

“After using a tint for the first time I’m a convert! This colour was divine, and what I like is that you can layer it up and build the tone to your desired effect; soft subtle pink by day and a deep red by night. It lasted all day after drinking and eating, and even stayed on when I applied a balm over the top. A must-have for your make-up bag.” – Danielle Harvey

“Straight away, I loved the sturdy packaging and precise applicator. The lightweight formula has fantastic pigmentation and the product has a matte finish. There’s no cracking or bleeding because of the avocado oil, vitamin E, and hyaluronic filling spheres, which I’m very thankful for as there’s nothing I hate more than dry lips! The beautiful shade lasted hours on my lips and I got compliments all day when I wore it!” – Olivia Gibson

“The Lip Definer was easy to use, and I loved the way it looked. I put it on first thing, and by the time I went to bed it was still firmly in place, looking fabulous, even though I’d been in the rain most of the day. I had fun playing with the dual-ended pencil and brush creating a look that suited me and paired it with Unforgettable Lipstick in Legendary, but as it’s a natural shade it would work well with most colours.” – Melissa Barker

SHADE: UNDRESSED WITH LEGENDARY

“Historically, matte lipsticks have been my worst enemy – being a notorious lip-biter they show up all my flaws. But it’s safe to say that this product has changed my mindset. The finish, although definitely matte, is somehow silky and smooth. The best thing about this particular shade is that it’s bold enough to look like you’ve made an effort without being OTT – the perfect lazy-girl hack! It also has incredible staying power, but that does mean you need to be careful to apply correctly the first time as it doesn’t budge!” – Beth Morton

SHADE: NICE TO MEET YA

Illamasqua Beyond Lipstick, www.illamasqua.com, £20 “Upon application you could definitely tell this was a luxe cream lipstick as it has a balm consistency and left my lips feeling nourished with a noticeable shimmer. Plus, I didn’t have the typical drying of the lips, which I find some products cause. This lipstick is one to keep on you and reapply throughout the day for longevity.” – Danielle Harvey

EXPERT ADVICE

Q&A Our experts answer your questions BROW BEAUTY Help! I want perfect brows in time for my wedding – do you have any tips?

Main image courtesy of www.gettyimages.co.uk and image from Katy Pheiffer courtesy of www.weddingsbynicolaandglen.com

Meet the expert: Heather Card is a fully insured, professional make-up artist specialising in airbrush make-up covering weddings across the South West. Heather says: I tend to recommend natural refined and defined brows for my brides. They always need attention as part of the make-up application because some may only require a tidy up and a bit of powder to define them while others may be sparse, narrow or too thin. There are many good-quality products on the market. I like to use Brow Blade in taupe by Urban Decay which is a pencil and ink that are both waterproof. I also work with Brow Zings by Benefit which is a gel and powder. I recommend using a brow powder because it’s easy to apply and you’re less likely to make a mistake. Now it’s time to choose your brow shape. They may just need brushing through with some powder to even out any sparse areas. Use upwards strokes when applying brow powder, gel and pencil so that you don’t flatten them. You need to accentuate the arch shape so using a thin-angled brush to apply powders or gels, remove any excess product. Start from the ends of each brow, working towards the middle, so the darkest point is at the end faded towards the centre of the face near the bridge of the nose.

HAIR HELP I’m researching a hairstyle to suit both me and my two bridesmaids for my late-spring wedding. I have afro-textured hair, one of my bridesmaids has shoulder-length blonde hair and the other has long Asian hair. What do you suggest? Meet the expert: Maya Jasinska is a UK and destination hairdresser and make-up artist covering weddings throughout both regions. Maya says: Being a hair stylist with 10 years’ experience, I understand how difficult it can be finding a style that will work on hair with different textures, lengths and density. Some stylists specialise in caucasian hair, some with Asian hair and others with afro hair. I have experience in working with all of these types and I love them all. The ideal look that I would suggest for all three of you would be a timeless low chignon which is very versatile and looks great worn with every hair type. By adding fresh flower pins or a comb, you can finish the look with a spring touch.

FRESH-FACED Please can you give me some fresh ideas for my spring-themed micro wedding make-up? Meet the expert: Katy Pheiffer is a multi-award-winning international make-up artist based in Wiltshire. Katy says: Spring is all about new beginnings when the weather is warming up and the days are getting longer, meaning that your big-day make-up needs to be suitable for the daytime and hopefully some sunny weather! I always recommend a dewy, light coverage for a spring wedding to achieve glowing, healthy-looking skin. I use Light Wonder foundation by Charlotte Tilbury mixed with the Super Radiant Booster by NARS to add luminosity. I set the skin with Sublime Perfection Blurring Under-Eye Powder by Pat McGrath which adds to the glow without mattifying it. For gorgeous glowing cheeks, I use Cheek to Chic Love Glow blusher by Charlotte Tilbury and the Glow Face Palette by Dior Backstage to highlight the cheekbones, inner corner of the eyes and the cupid’s bow. I keep eye make-up subtle by working with the Sweet Peach Eye Shadow Palette by Too Faced, combined with a Rock ‘N’ Kohl Eye Cheat pencil by Charlotte Tilbury applied in the waterline to make the eyes pop. Finally, your lipstick needs to complement your understated eye make-up so the Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour, 91 Séduisante by Chanel is perfect for a spring wedding.

HEAD TO THE EAST

The Chapel Barn (once a 15th-century farmstead) has all the charm of its heritage intact and yet comes with a host of luxury facilities, including an indoor swimming pool, cinema, gym and spa set over 5,000 magnificent acres of carefully maintained Suffolk countryside. Accommodation options range from the one-bed electricity-free Hovel, set by the lake, through to Chapel Barn itself, which comes with 18 en suite bedrooms. All seven properties may be rented individually and each building has been sensitively restored, employing the traditional methods of local artisans. Its hot tub and rowboat are both wonderful spots to take in 360° views of the Suffolk countryside and there’s space on its lawns for fun group activities.
