hardly dare believe it, but at the time of writing this, there is at last a blueprint for the shape of things to come for weddings in 2021. We’re all keeping everything crossed that the roadmap out of lockdown will lead to happy times ahead for everyone. Local cake supremo Terri Newman has been named 2021 Suffolk Wedding Cake Designer of the Year in the LuxLife global annual wedding awards.

The accolade is the latest honour for Terri since she first started Hadleigh-based Erivica Cakes. On hearing the news she said, “To say I was surprised is a massive understatement and it has given us a massive boost in positivity.”

Terri was first inspired by her mum Erica who used to make wedding and celebration cakes for family and friends as a hobby. After she died 16 years ago, Terri inherited all her tools and equipment and gradually taught herself to use them. “I love the fact that I still learn something new every day! Cambridgeshire family-owned Kingsway Golf Centre has invested just shy of three quarters of a million pounds during national lockdown to bring extra fun to your doorstep.

The investment includes the spectacular Jurassic Links, a dinosaurthemed adventure golf site designed for fun-loving adults, families and youngsters. Putting through hazards, players will have to navigate through a jeep, walk through a cascading waterfall, while being overlooked by a Pterodactyl and a soon-to-arrive 30-foot T-Rex, which will guard the centre and overlook the main road. Founded by Julian Dell and business partner John Watts, the centre is now the brainchild and inspiration of John’s son James, an ex-pro golfer on the European Challenge Tour who joined the business four years ago. James explains, “The decision was made to invest in the business 18 months ago and we wanted something to stand out. So, working closely with a specially formed, creative and experienced team we have really started to bring the adventure golf to life.”

The development follows another major investment last year in a stateof-the-art ball tracking system for the 40-bay driving range. Kingsway also boasts a nine-hole pay-and-play golf course, a nine-hole pitch and putt, and a family-friendly footgolf. The centre should be reopening from the end of March when restrictions ease and all games of golf and adventure golf will be timed to allow for safe social distancing. Norfolk super star Jack the miniature Shetland pony is on a mission to bring a smile to people’s faces. With his well-groomed good looks, he’s well known on the local wedding scene and is a real show-stealer kitted out in his leather bridle, lead rope, decorated harness and wicker baskets filled with petal confetti. “Jack really enjoys all the attention he gets at weddings,” says owner Ali Stearn.

During the current challenging times he’s not been resting on his laurels but has been putting his charms to good use in his other important role; bringing joy to dementia patients. As an ambassador for Dementia UK, Ali and Jack have been on a mission to not only raise smiles but funds for the charity by visiting local care homes. During lockdown they’ve been stepping up the visits and although they can’t go inside, just seeing Jack from the window has been a real tonic for the residents.

Emily Jupp, artist/designer and founder of Milly J Shoes, has been made a fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts. After starting out in 2011 making individual shoe sculptures as art pieces for shop window displays, home and wedding décor, it’s the latest achievement in her successful career. arrie and Ryan met at their local Tesco store in the village where they grew up. “We both had Saturday jobs there – very exotic!” laughs Carrie. The proposal was quite dramatic though, as Ryan popped the question on a beach in Mexico, at night during a massive thunderstorm. “We were supposed to be going to Cuba but Hurricane Irma put pay to that. I was crying the week before and wanted to cancel the holiday, not knowing that Ryan was planning to propose while we were away. Fortunately, he convinced me to go to Mexico instead.

If not, we probably would have ended up getting engaged in Morrisons or somewhere equally glamorous!” They opted for an outdoor wedding and were married at The Firepit Camp in Wendling, Norfolk on 22nd August, 2019. Read on for Carrie’s account of their big day...

I bought my Lennon from Willow by Watt ers dress from La Crème Brides. The ladies there were wonderful, so helpful and welcoming. I didn’t go in thinking I wanted a boho style but the dress was on the mannequin when we walked in. When I tried it on my sister, mum and nan all said ‘it’s the one’.

Our florist Caroline is a fam ily friend and she used so man y flowers to decorate the venue including a gorgeou s selection for the ceremony and swags of greenery over the dining area – there may even have been the odd pineap ple or two!

I was so unprepared when I met our cake maker, I had to quickly Google wildflower wedding cakes! Maria was brilliant though and the one she made for us was utterly gorgeous.

We had Pete’s Pizzas for the wedding breakfast. Pete and his wife were so lovely and it was great value with meat, veggie and vegan options.

We gave our guests packets of sunflower seeds in aid of the Mind charity as wedding favours.

Family and friends baked cakes for dessert.

My sister made an ace vegan chocolate coffee cake, my nan did her famous flapjacks and family friend Dawnie made loads of different cakes. It was one of my favourite parts of the day.

When it got dark everyone stood out on the field under the stars with sparklers; we didn’t get a photo but it was really pretty.

We had a DJ in the evening and face painter Rooblidoo, who was brilliant.

We couldn’t have had the day we had without my mum Julie. She lived and breathed the wedding in the months leading up to it; emailing suppliers, buying little decorative bits, tidying and coordinating on the day.

teffi and Richard met while they were out celebrating friends’ birthdays and soon realised they shared a number of mutual pals. Steffi also recognised him from when their paths used to cross during their regular cycling commutes in different directions. They hit it off and the rest, as they say, is history.

POPPING THE QUESTION When the time came to propose, Richard chose the city of love as the perfect setting. “It was a couple of weeks after my 30th birthday,” remembers Steffi. “I didn’t know we were going to Paris until we arrived at the Eurostar.

On our first night there he got down on one knee outside the Louvre and asked me to marry him.” She said ‘yes’, of course, and they went to a romantic bistro to celebrate afterwards. “We sat next to a father and son who were running a champagne stall at the market the following day. They called us over to try some and we ended up ordering the fizz for our wedding from their vineyard,” adds Steffi.

THE TIME AND THE PLACE They set the date for 21st September, 2019 and chose a familiar place for their big day. “After we met Steffi told me about her job at Brasted’s at Langley Abbey, how amazing the venue was and the incredible team there,” explains Richard. So after a trip home to see her mum, it was decided that a wedding there was the way to go. “It’s such a spectacular setting, you can picture how everything will look as you move from room to room,” reveals Steffi.

“The theme and colour scheme fell into place as we progressed with the planning. We went for grey, lavender tones with wooden, natural elements and wildflowers to create a relaxed feel.”

LOOKING THE PART Steffi had her dress made and designed at Camilla Brides in Norwich. “Paula at the boutique helped me work out what suited my shape and we created the design over several appointments to make it perfect. I’d tried on other dresses at another bridal shop which made me realise I wanted something that was just for me as there was always something I didn’t like about them.” She had a detachable train to allow her to dance the night away and her wedding shoes were customised white Converse High Tops with the wedding date on the side. “I wore a necklace that I was given when I was a bridesmaid, blue socks in my shoes and borrowed a handkerchief. I didn’t have a veil as it felt too formal for me.”

REAL WEDDINGS To reflect his family background, Richard and most of the groomsmen wore their own kilts along with matching grey jackets and socks. The bridesmaids complemented the wedding colours in lilac multiway dresses that they could style to suit them.

Family friends Janet Sayer and Angie Twaite created the wonderful floral displays and bouquets, inspired by the renowned florist Constance Spry in keeping with her design philosophy to ‘leave room for the butterflies’.

“When Janet told me this I just loved it,” recalls Steffi.

“I wanted my bouquet to have that just-picked-fromthe-meadow look and it was exactly what I asked for.”

In a nod to Richard’s Scottish roots the flowers and buttonholes were all tied with Black Watch tartan ribbon.

THE 'I DOS' The venue provided the ideal setting for the romantic ceremony. “We had dried petals lining the aisle, my mum made the chair decorations and our celebrant helped us to personalise our vows,” says Steffi. Afterwards they toasted their new married status with drinks and canapés, including a special plate all of their own. As everyone mixed and mingled, artist Jo Want created a buzz doing guests’ portraits. “She was a big hit and we wish we’d booked her for longer as lots of people wanted to have theirs done. Everyone loved her pictures and they were a nice memento for them to take home,” adds Steffi.

“We were extremely fortunate to have such amazing people to help make our day so special.”

THE PERSONAL TOUCHES Decorative details included fairylights adorning the venue with uplighters in the main hall to highlight the stunning brickwork. They had a simple noticeboard-style table plan to complement the wedding stationery. The tables were scattered with dried wildflower petals and the centrepieces were flower-filled white enamel jugs tied with tartan ribbon on rustic wood slices.

Richard’s brother David made their cake including two layers of lemon sponge topped with a rainbowcoloured vanilla tier, decorated with wildflowers to match the centrepieces and bouquets. “We bought a bamboo cake stand engraved with our names and wedding date to display it on,” adds Steffi. “We also hired decorations including the lanterns for the aisle which we reused around the venue and outside in the evening.”

The three-course wedding breakfast provided a delicious array of dishes with a selection of tasty starters, followed by loin of lamb or grilled sea bass with a vegan option too for the main course and a choice of tempting desserts.

TIME TO CELEBRATE At the end of the night everyone kicked up their heels and danced to celdih band Stumpy Oak. “They did two sets which were incredible and they also provided the DJ for the remainder of the evening,” says Steffi. “Everyone present on the day had a part to play in making it extra special and we can’t thank them enough!”

S

ally and Nathan’s journey began many years before when they went to the same primary school together. Unbelievably, they also both had the same open heart surgery at Guys Hospital by the same surgeon, “My mum said this was how she first learnt of Nath at primary school, finding out another child had been at Guys Hospital for a similar reason,” recalls Sally.

Friendship blossomed before they both left secondary school, and another hospital trip for Nathan was the start of something more. “Nath broke his ankle while larking about on a rope swing when we were out one day. I stayed with him while waiting for the ambulance – for what seemed like hours – and from then, as they say, the rest is history!”

Nathan proposed on the 3rd March 2017 on the couple’s nineyear anniversary at Congham Hall. “Nothing ever goes quite as smoothly for Nath when he tries to surprise me,” shares Sally.

“He had ordered my ring which had got delayed and arrived 10 minutes before we had to leave the house. He was in such a flap he put the ring in the wrong coat pocket...mine! When arriving at Congham Hall for afternoon tea, the staff take your coat, so handing his coat over to the lady (with the ring back in his pocket) meant he had another hurdle to cross. “Nath wanted to propose in the herb gardens as he knew I didn’t want a scene however, in his words: ‘the most water that has ever fallen out of the sky was happening that day’, so he had to think again!

“Eventually, we ended up in the library where there was a roaring fire and he got down on one knee – perfect!”

The big day was set 7th March 2020, with the couple opting for the The Red Barn, South Runcton, Norfolk for their nuptials. Here, Sally tells us more about their special day...

We were lucky enough to go to The Red Barn when it was covered in a very light dusting of snow, it was just perfect - in the evening fairylights and electric candles are everywhere which make it so beautiful. The team at the venue was so organised and made everything run smoothly.

Our table plan was painted on an old board with chalk paint. The favours were wildflower seeds to help the bees as we’re both passionate about the cause and Nath’s first pet name for me was ‘bee’.

Our day wouldn’t have been complete without our friends and family, whether they helped with the food and decorating the barn, or just turned up, we really hope everyone had a day they loved as much as us! - Sally

We had a tower of cheese as our cake to go with the ploughman’s lunch for our wedding breakfast.

Our centrepieces were on round log slices which were painted with black chalk paint and each table was assigned the name of a herb and each guest’s name was displayed on wooden letter tiles.

In addition to the tasty ploughman’s spread, we had what felt like a million traybakes!

The bridesmaids wore emerald green lace-style dresses from Debenhams.

The dress I ended up choosing wasn’t at all what I had in mind, but as soon as I put it on, I knew it was the one!

Nath and the groomsmen wore blue suits with emerald green ties and pocket squares from Goddards in Kings Lynn. He stood-out from the rest of the groomsmen with a checked waistcoat.

Our photographer Ben captured some truly memorable moments. He had organised with Richard (The Red Barn owner) to get a picture of our whole wedding party from above in a cherry picker! We had no idea this was happening and it is one of my favourite photos from our wedding.

We had lots of board and garden games for our guests to play, which we’d been collecting over the last few years. We then had an amazing DJ in the evening Greg Claridge who played the best music!

We were both nervous as neither of us like a huge amount of attention, but the wedding had been a long time coming and we were so ready for it.

We hired Premier Bars and they were great, even allowing Nath to pick a couple of his favourite real ales which they sourced especially.

Ben also organised with Richard to have a sparkler tunnel we could run through at the end of the evening which looked just beautiful in the photographs! They are some of Nath’s favourite shots.

Dale from El Heffes Taco Bus did the evening food and really hit the nail on the head. I mean who doesn’t want a big old portion of nachos at 9pm after drinking and dancing for most of the day?!

e love this edgy shoot at blank canvas outdoor venue Lattenbury Hill Weddings. Set in the middle of a family run Cambridgeshire farm it provided the perfect backdrop to get creative. The aim was to push the boundaries and create something different to the norm for a country wedding.

Organiser Kate Fletcher of Flashkate Bridal Makeup explains, “I’ve often seen neon lights used in urban bridal shoots, but never for a rustic rural theme. I pulled together the best, and in my opinion, coolest wedding suppliers in the region to change that. I wanted colourful and edgy but still within a country location and the images speak for themselves. Two sets of models meant we could showcase two types of dress and styling designs in an epic location and they totally rocked it!”

But how do you decide what they should wear? Here, designer and owner of Norfolk-based Tatty’s Original Tiffany Crosson-Smith shares some of her top tips to make it easier for you… ❤ Think about the overall theme of your wedding day. Have you got a particular style? Are you having a themed event? Do you have a colour scheme picked out already? ❤ When you’re getting married is an important factor. If you’re having a summer wedding lighter, brighter colours are great. Take into account the style of dress and avoid anything too warm as your bridesmaids will be in their outfits all day. Choose light materials, such as chiffon, tulle or silk, which will flow beautifully and avoid long sleeves or tight fitting, restrictive styles so they can move freely. For a winter wedding, sleeves or a cute jacket for the evening are a great way to keep the chills at bay. Play around with more dramatic fabrics like a beautiful velvet to give a rich, warm effect. Darker colours like deep blue, red and green shades will also reflect a cosy winter feel. ❤ As well as complementing the overall theme of your wedding day try to find colours that look good on your bridesmaids. Experiment with samples if they complement their skin tone, eye and hair colour, you can even use paint swatches from your local homewares store as testers. ❤ Finding something to suit bridesmaids of different sizes and ages can be really challenging. One way around this is to have bespoke dresses so each one is unique but can all be made in the same colour and fabric to coordinate perfectly. Although it may be a more expensive option, there are lots of advantages. There’s no limit to the colour and fabric choices, or the designs that you can choose from, with expert guidance on hand to create a gown to suit each bridesmaid perfectly. As we emerge from lockdown number three with 2021 weddings due to get the green light, Suffolk-based make-up artist Victoria Bradfield shares her beauty insight into some of the key trends that are set to emerge for brides and their best girls. ❤ I think there will be a massive pull towards full on Hollywoodstyle glamour, be it hair, makeup, dresses, accessories or the whole shebang. For too long we have sat in our jogging bottoms, hair pulled back into a messy bun, with stripped back or no make-up at all. Moving forward, I think it will be oversized everything, even for micro weddings, and I can’t wait! ❤ The 70s was an iconic era for bright sparkly eyeshadows, statement liner and lashes. I feel in 2021/2022 we’ll be seeing a lot of these kind of emphasised eyes for a more dramatic look, especially if facemasks are still mandatory. ❤ Bold lips are a great way to get your glam on if statement eyes are not for you. ❤ The flip side of the coin (there is always one) is that during lockdown, many people have been investing more time into better skincare. With more hours in the day to spare, skin has been living its best life and 2021 is its time to shine. There will be huge focus on a gorgeous dewy complexion with lighter foundations and a pop of highlighter letting that natural glow shine through. ❤ Even though you may have upped your cleansing game in the last year, get booking those facials for when the beauty industry opens up again. A good resurfacing facial will get rid of any dead skin cells and boost cell renewal. ❤ In the lead up to the wedding make sure you’re exfoliating regularly so the skin is smooth and ready for make-up as it will go on so much better if it’s been well prepped beforehand. Even if

you have an oily complexion, good moisturisers are important with a serum containing hyaluronic acid for hydration or oils for dry skin. The whole wedding party should up their beauty regime to be picture-perfect.

Should the bridesmaids’ make-up mirror the bride’s?

Victoria says: It’s really up to the bride herself. Some like a uniformed look, similar but not quite the same as theirs, others are completely relaxed and happy for the bridesmaids to decide.

Whatever she decides, it’s important for the bridesmaids to remember it’s not their day and to be kind and gracious and go with the flow.

On the wedding day I like to work my way through the bridal party leaving the bride to last or second to last, depending on the hairstyle and working round what’s best for the hairdresser too. If it’s a large bridal party, I either bring an assistant or I have great connections with other artists that I can call on to help out. Once the make-up is all finished it’s time to get dresses on, a quick recheck and touch up those lips or any shine that needs correcting and you and your best girls are wedding day ready.

She recommends: ❤ Don’t be shy to speak out and be totally specific about what you want when it comes to your hair. If you have a certain style that you wear every day and want to keep it like that for the wedding, then be sure to tell your stylist. Bringing a picture with you of when you feel your hair looked its best is always helpful. ❤ If you’re unsure what suits you, I always recommend an up do; classic, elegant and always flattering, they're also easy to maintain throughout the day.

Don’t be afraid to speak to your stylist about the number of people wanting their hair done, most will have assistants and other professionals they can call on to accommodate larger parties.

Time keeping Sticking to the morning schedule is so important to ensure you have

enough time for pictures and a glass of fizz before you go. I always recommend mums, the maid-of-honour/chief bridesmaids get ready first, that way they are good to go and can run around after you all morning.

With Holkham Hall and its wealth of breathtaking wedding spaces just a hop, skip and jump away, it’s a photographer’s dream.

Inspired by the setting, creative director and wedding planner of Bride & Belle Luxury Weddings Senel Besim got together with local photographer Sharon Cudworth to create this stunning shoot.

How can I add pops of colour to my bridal make-up as seen during London fashion week?

Kate says: Many trends from London fashion week filter down to bridal as shown by the model pictured who has pops of pink to highlight her eyes, as seen on many virtual catwalks. To get the look it’s important to keep everything else pared back. Start with amazing skincare and then a glossy, natural foundation. I’m loving Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk with a touch of Futuredew by Glossier to highlight. Skip contouring altogether and add a touch of pink blush instead, I used NARS Orgasm. Brush up eyebrows with soap to keep the hairs in place, then for the eyes I used a bright pink eyeshadow but instead of applying it to the whole lid I just added it to the inner and outer corners with a flat compact brush, feathered in to blend. Add lots of black mascara, such as Milk Makeup KUSH high volume, no eyeliner and a nude but glossy lip to make the pink eyes the star of the show.

We’re hoping to get married this summer but lockdown has taken its toll on my hair. What would you suggest to get it back in tip top condition ready for my pre-wedding rehearsal?

Becks says: ❤ If you can’t get to the salon yet or have a hair colouring question, don’t worry as many salons are now offering online consultations so your stylist can see the condition of your hair and advise you on the next course of treatment. This is something I offer my brides and, as well as being really lovely to meet them, it also provides the opportunity to give added reassurance about their postlockdown hair concerns face-to-face. ❤ To prep your hair keep to your usual routines, but maybe include a hair mask once a week leading up to your rehearsal. These are not only great for giving your locks a nourishing boost, but because they have to be left on for a while, it gives you the perfect excuse to indulge in a relaxing bath with a glass of your favourite tipple for a little longer! ❤ It’s best to leave your hair natural before going to your bridal hair rehearsal. Straightening it will remove nearly all the elasticity and make it harder to style. It’s also important for your stylist to work with your natural hair as it allows them to determine the exact time it will take to style on the day. On the wedding morning, your hair needs to be as it was at the rehearsal, so if you washed and gently rough dried it then, do exactly the same. ❤ If you can, it’s best to wait until you’ve seen your bridal hair stylist before you have your hair trimmed, as you may need to have more off than you think and if they also cut hair, it might be an idea to let them do it.

ustainability is key for many couples planning their big day. Caring for the planet doesn’t have to mean compromising on style or wow factor though. Norfolk-based wedding photographer Liz Bishop shows how in this stunning shoot.

“My initial inspiration were the flowers and the foliage at Urban Jungle in Norwich. I wanted something bold, beautiful and unique and to show that with a bit of creativity you can have a stunning look that is individual, affordable and environmentally sustainable,” she explains.

The final shots reflect her natural, relaxed photography style and her love of colour, movement and natural images. The Urban Jungle provided the ideal setting with its beautiful array of exotic and unusual plants. Excitingly, you can also host your wedding reception amongst the wild lush greenery!

Florist Julia of Darling Buds created two stunning floral bouquets and headpieces using mostly local, seasonal flowers grown in her garden. Some of the props belonged to the suppliers or were sourced from local antique markets, the rug came from Diss Emporium and the green velvet chair was Liz’s mum’s old nursing chair. “Finding an alternative dress supplier was also important to us and having met Sarah from Sarah Jane Bridal Boutique we knew she was the one. Her dresses are vintage and carefully sourced and she also re-designs many of them so you know you’re getting something totally individual.”

What do you think will be the major influences and looks for weddings in 2021?

Ian says: Relaxed and informal are going to be big buzzwords for weddings in the year ahead. After lockdown, many couples just want to be able to have an intimate ceremony or micro wedding and then party later with their family and friends, rather than delay their marriage any longer. Extended celebrations are also proving popular, spreading the joy beyond the wedding day over the course of a long weekend or even a whole week.

In terms of decoration, greenery and foliage remain strong for a more natural, eco-look with ferns, succulents and eucalyptus playing

a major role in wedding displays. Outdoor weddings in natural settings continue to find favour as sustainability and eco-credentials remain key concerns. Concept and mood lighting help to create the right atmosphere and ambience at any wedding venue whether inside or out and this continues to be the case with neon signage and lights.

Catering is becoming more adaptable and personalised with bespoke cakes, artisan street food and mobile bars of various kinds in demand.

Finally, and most importantly, remember it’s your wedding so it should reflect you as a couple and your personalities. While trends are important, the personal touches are what really matter.

What are the key trends and colours for wedding flowers this year?

Alison reports: ❤ The floral trend colour for 2021 is Scorched Earth with vibrant golden and yellow tones. Adding a splash of orange, crimson, earthy or grey shades, will all help to emphasise this latest palette. ❤ Dyed flowers were trending last year and are set to become even more popular. Demand for certain colours allows designers to experiment with tints and tones combining different floral textures allowing for a blend of dried and fresh material. ❤ Dahlias have been making a comeback and are set to be a favourite this year. They offer long seasonal availability and a large range of big and blousy blooms in assorted colours. ❤ Scented flowers that bring back childhood memories are another great pick with brides expected to opt for scented blooms such as sweet peas and lily of the valley. ❤ Following the recent TV series The Crown, cascading bouquets are returning to the spotlight. While Princess Diana’s bouquet included trailing ivy and stephanotis, varieties such as clematis and trailing foliage plants will be coming to the fore as we move through 2021. ❤ A growing shift towards more sustainable and ecofriendly flowers will see brides sourcing locally grown blooms and opting for designs that can be re-used after the ceremony to decorate the reception space. ❤ After a year of hibernation wedding flowers are set to explode in 2021. Donna and Ed’s wedding was the first one I shot after the initial lockdown. We stopped off for a few photos at the Plantation Gardens in Norwich before heading off to the Maids Head Hotel.

After having to postpone their wedding several times Richard and Rachel were determined it was going ahead and this shot was taken just before the rain hit.

Brooke and Zac got married at The Norfolk Mead Hotel just before Christmas. It’s a very special place for me as I had my wedding there and I really got to love these two.

Jenny and Dean were married at the Royal Assembly Rooms, Great Yarmouth. The entire day was filled with fun and laughter and this was a shot they particularly wanted with the pier in the background as the sun was setting.
