his issue, there has been so much going on in the world and no, I’m not talking about the pandemic! Although on the topic of our Prime Minister Boris Johnson, he got married to his bride, Carrie Symonds, who rented her Christos Costarellos wedding dress which became the inspiration for my eco and sustainable wedding feature this issue. Would you, or wouldn’t you, rent yours? The happy couple then headed to Carbis Bay Estate in Cornwall not for their honeymoon but with other world leaders for the G7 Summit. We reveal all about this coastal retreat and its latest partnership with Moët & Chandon in our packed venue section.

Singer Ariana Grande caused an Instagram frenzy recently when she became married in an at-home celebration, coining the term ‘ceremini’ and her beautiful bridal make-up inspired our expert beauty feature this issue.

THE IVY EXETER OPENS

THREE MILE BEACH UNVEILS GLAMPING AND FOOD AND BEVERAGE OFFERINGS

Three Mile Beach in West Cornwall, located a stone’s throw from Gwithian Beach, has introduced a collection of 15 characterful beach houses offering stylish self-catering with a difference this summer, and the property is also set to unveil a glampsite home to four rustic yurts, plus a host of foodie offerings that celebrate the very best Cornish produce.

Each of the three and four-bedroom houses stand out with bold exteriors painted pink, turquoise and yellow. Visitors can also book talented local chefs to cook for them in the comfort of their own houses, with menus tailored to suit their preferences and seasonal availability. Tawstock Court is a Georgian country house with a castle-like appearance situated in 32 acres of grounds and ancient woodland on a hill enjoying views of the North Devon countryside. The courtyard has recently been revamped into a stunning space with festoon lighting, ample seating positioned under a canopy of fairylights and a decked area with swing chairs.

Spacious rooms and suites at the front of the building are home to period features and offer panoramic views across the valley. The Panelled Hall that opens out on to the balustrade features carved wooden pillars and a magnificent fireplace. Other areas including the bar are decorated with a more contemporary feel but with a vintage flair. ia and Nathan met via an online dating app and chatted for a few weeks before enjoying their first date. “We kept making plans to meet up but I kept getting nervous and rearranging at the last minute,” Tia tells us. “We agreed to meet for his birthday and I knew I couldn’t let him down again so we finally met and the rest is history.”

The couple became engaged just after Christmas. “We had already chosen the ring together and Nathan surprised me after asking my dad for permission,” Tia says. “It was a mutual decision to get married because we were separated for ten days during a family holiday and had never been apart for that long before. We knew then that we should just do it!”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple enjoyed an intimate wedding at Elfordleigh in Plymouth.

After originally planning a wedding with 100 guests, they had to significantly reduce numbers because of the lockdown restrictions.

“It was heartbreaking to make this decision at first but we’re glad that we did,” Tia explains. “We waited two years to secure our wedding date during Halloween, which is one of our favourite times of the year, and we weren’t going to let the pandemic stand in the way of us becoming Mr and Mrs.” Tia and Nathan chose their venue after visiting and feeling very comfortable there. “We were both impressed by the incredible views and room décor,” Tia tells us. “We chose to have our ceremony in the conservatory which was intimate and warm, illuminated by fairylights and a stunning chandelier. The Reynolds Room, where we enjoyed our wedding breakfast, was perfectly decorated in shades of light grey and white with dark wood flooring and sumptuous black velour cushions.”

“With a wedding party of just 13 guests, we decided to have three tables with two couples seated at each,” Tia explains. “Our centrepieces were silver candelabras surrounded by a floral wreath containing dark spiky foliage, black baccara roses and dusky pink avalanche roses. As a nod to Halloween, we included

Tia’s brother is a graphic designer and created name cards, which included everyone’s meal choices, and an A3-size table plan which the team at the venue presented on an easel. “My friend from school owns a personalised cookie-making company,” Tia tells us. “She made us some personalised white pumpkin-shaped cookies featuring our name and wedding date to match our décor and everyone loved them!”

The couple’s florist did an amazing job bringing their pink Halloween theme to life. “I still have my bouquet now and even after the flowers have dried out, they look beautiful,” Tia tells us. “We opted for a quirky white wedding cake which had two square-shaped tiers placed over one round one. It was iced with a dramatic black dripping rose and the top layer was Nathan’s favourite flavour, carrot cake, and the bottom tier was my favourite, red-velvet cake.”

LOOKING THE PART Tia found the dress of her dreams in Prudence Gowns bridal boutique located in Exeter. “My mum and nan visited with me after trying on plenty of dresses at other places,” Tia explains. “I chose a chiffon and floral lace style with subtle sparkle by the designer Stella York. It made me feel feminine, but not too girly, and I didn’t want to take it off!”

Nathan and his groomsman wore burgundy three-piece skinny-fit suits. “They both looked so handsome and felt comfortable, even after eating a three-course meal!” Tia tells us. “Our beautiful bridesmaid wore an ivory dress and kept telling me all night how pretty she felt in it.”

TIME TO ENTERTAIN Tia’s mum surprised the couple with a homemade photo booth featuring a rose gold-coloured backdrop, fun props and a polaroid camera.

“Some of the photographs were put into our guest book alongside messages from our loved ones which was an entertaining read the following evening,” Tia tells us.

“The staff at the venue were so welcoming and the food was delicious! We’re planning to head back for our wedding anniversary.” - Tia and Nathan

auren and Sam met in a local nightclub and became a couple one year later. “I was head over heels in love with him and liked the fact that he was six years older than me, very attractive and successful - he just wooed me!” Lauren tells us.

The couple became engaged on their fifth anniversary in 2017 during a holiday in the Maldives. “The best time for us to go away due to work commitments is always at Christmas,” Lauren tells us. “The resort was just paradise! We stayed in an over-water bungalow and before we went, friends had said he might pop the question, but it wasn’t on my radar because I do all the packing so knew that he wouldn’t have been able to take a ring without me seeing it! Also, knowing Sam, he wouldn’t want to do it when anyone expected it, he’d want it to be a complete surprise. After a few days into the holiday, on the 17th December, we were getting ready for dinner when Sam kept popping into the bathroom asking me what I was doing which made sense later that evening. There was a tropical storm that day so after finishing dinner, we drove back to our villa on a golf buggy. Sam sat on the sofa that was positioned over a glass floor showing the seabed below, and called me over, pointing to the view and asking me what I could see. He then lent behind the sofa, pulled out a box holding a stunning platinum diamond ring and got down on one knee to ask me to marry him! He also gave a lovely speech that made me cry of course, I said yes!”

“Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing about our wedding now, the intimacy was just magical.” - Lauren SETTING THE SCENE The couple enjoyed an intimate ceremony at Larkbeare House with Lauren’s brother Matt and his girlfriend Georgie as witnesses after planning a much larger celebration that the lockdown restrictions prevented from happening. After the disappointment of two potential wedding dates having to be postponed, they decided against having a big do, for now, realising it was about their love for one another that they wanted to celebrate, so they opted for a small register office ceremony. “We’re close to Matt and Georgie and they have supported us through so much,” Lauren tells us. “Our parents have split up meaning that we have four families between us so the fairest way was to keep it simple and minimal and we’ve decided to have a larger blessing ceremony with everyone invited in the future. We didn’t have our two-year-old son, Fred, with us during the ceremony but he was dropped off in his little suit for the photographs afterwards and looked adorable.”

The ceremony was followed by an afternoon tea, just the four of them, at the elegant Lympstone Manor. “It’s a local venue that I love and the team there were so helpful,” Lauren tells us. “We were impressed by the exterior design and architecture so we didn’t want any professional photos taken inside the building. My friend recommended Margo R Photography and her work looked so beautiful so it was great to find out that she was available on our date to take some shots of us outside with Fred.”

LOOKING THE PART Lauren wore a cream suit having been inspired by the bridal look of Bianca Jagger when she married the lead singer of the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, in 1971. “I love fashion so browsed through Pinterest for ideas,” Lauren tells us. “I fell in love with this outfit that Millie Mackintosh wore more recently. I ordered quite a few suits and jumpsuits but nothing was the right colour. In the end, I found my dream suit at Reiss and Sam wore a two-tone suit from there too, teamed with a blue-spotted tie and a cream rose buttonhole.

The suits looked fantastic and worked so well together and I was able to get a local milliner to create my cream fedora hat finished with ribbon detail.” Lauren also held an elegant bouquet of ivory and green varieties that complemented her suit well. “Holly, our florist, is so talented and knows me well so what she created for me was perfect,” Lauren says.

TIME TO ENTERTAIN “Whilst we didn’t have readings, Sam, my dad, our best man and maid-of-honour all have speeches prepared ready for our wedding blessing,” Lauren tells us. “I put together a sentimental message for Sam that I handed to him following our ceremony for him to read in private.”

Top tip: “Don’t think of anyone else but yourselves when it comes to planning your wedding. It’s about the two of you and a celebration of your love.”

endy and Stephen first met in 2014 when he visited Wendy’s charity Team Edward Labrador Rescue that she had founded the previous year (www.team-edward-labradorrescue.co.uk). “I was with my rescue labrador called Edward at the time and Stephen came over to make a fuss of him,” Wendy tells us. “It turns out that he had a chocolate-coloured Labrador called Chester and showed me photographs of him. I told him all about my work and he became an avid supporter and follower.”

Two years later, Wendy and Stephen became a couple after she contacted him to be part of a small team that she was putting together to run the Nottingham half-marathon to raise money for the rescue. “Stephen said he would help us with the training but he wasn’t sure about participating,” Wendy says. “By the end of the first training session, I had him signed up to join us and to fundraise!

Spending time on the many training runs, we realised that we had so much in common. He shared my passion for labradors and was funny, cheerful and kind. We completed the half-marathon having raised thousands of pounds for the rescue.”

The couple became engaged in their favourite place, Padstow in Cornwall. “We were on holiday with our dogs and I now know that Stephen had carried the ring in his pocket on many of the coastal walks that we did over the week waiting for the perfect moment to propose,” Wendy tells us. “I ended up being in the shower one morning when he asked me! He said he just thought to himself what am I waiting for, so he dropped to one knee and asked me to be his wife! It was almost two years to the date that we got together. He presented me with the most beautiful diamond ring in a decorative platinum setting which was stunning. I was shocked! Stephen had always said that he wasn’t the marrying type but he admitted that when you meet the right one, you just know!”

SETTING THE SCENE

“On the morning of our wedding, the skies were bright blue with not a cloud in sight. I messaged Pirate FM to see if they were able to give us and our labradors a mention on air!

Nothing was too much trouble and Lucy wished us well which I found emotional.” - Wendy

The couple had discussed getting married in Cornwall in 2021 with their dogs there to enjoy the day because they were the reason that they met. But then, in March 2020, the pandemic restrictions were put in place and their beloved labrador Chester endured a health scare. As he recovered, Wendy and Stephen decided not to wait any longer and set about organising their special day. “I asked Rachel and Sam Bishop who own Trevear Farm in St Issey where we stay on our holidays, to help us plan our special day, giving them an idea of what we were looking for,” Wendy explains. “We were booked to visit in September anyway (Covid restrictions allowing) so Sam arranged the date of Friday 18th September for us to marry at Pengenna Manor. There was a choice of three different areas to say our vows and we chose the doorway.”

The couple kept their nuptials a secret until one week before they were due to travel to Cornwall. “We told our loved ones who would’ve attended if it weren’t for the restrictions in place where only six guests could be present,” Wendy explains. “Our family understood why our day was to be small and intimate and our witnesses were Rachel and Sam who had helped us so much.”

On the day itself, the couple drove to Pengenna Manor and got ready there. “Stephen took Chester and Ellie off after I had dressed them in their beautiful floral collars and Edward stayed with me to walk the short distance to the doorway of the 800-year-old private house set in 300 acres of the pretty Cornish countryside,” Wendy says. “Edward was the natural choice to give me away because he was the reason that I set up Team Edward Labrador Rescue after losing my first labrador called Lawrence the year before. It broke my heart when he passed away and Edward came into rescue at 15 months old, a year later, desperately needing someone to love him and I needed him as much as he needed me!”

MICRO WEDDING SPECIAL Being a beauty therapist, Wendy was happy to do her own make-up and hair but she chose the hair artist Emma C, who she found on Instagram, to help. “What a fabulous lady! I went for a trial and gave her photographs of a simple idea that I wanted,” Wendy says. “After speaking to her, it turned out that she knew a lady who had placed one of my rescue dogs in Truro a few years previously so it was as if it was meant to be!”

Wendy carried a hand-tied bouquet of large pink, cream and burgundy roses to match the dog collars which set the colour theme for the day. “I had collected a lock of fur from Lawrence after he passed away and I wanted it entwined in the ribbon of my bouquet so that I could feel his presence with us,” Wendy says.

Wendy’s friend Monique from MS Crafty Creatures created three beautiful life-like characters of Edward, Elie and Chester to display on the wedding cake which was made by Sian at The Garden Baker. “It was a naked cake in strawberry and champagne flavours which tasted delicious and looked incredible,” Wendy tells us.

As background music on the day, the couple picked the tracks Someone like you by Blank and Jones and Lucky by Kat Edmonson.

“We both feel extremely lucky to have found each other a bit later on in life and share the same passions,” Wendy tells us. “I had written some words that I wanted to say and secretly told Mel our registrar. I kept having to stop to compose myself!”

Wendy and Stephen enjoyed dinner that evening at Trevear Farm. “It was prepared by Ross Geach from Padstow Kitchen Garden,” Wendy says. “We enjoyed Cornish lobster and fillet steak.”

“Our photographer Nick was so relaxed on the day, capturing plenty of wonderful images. One of my favourites is me with Edward whilst we were waiting to walk the short distance to meet Stephen, Chester and Ellie.” - Wendy

LOOKING THE PART “I had photographs of the dress designs that I imagined myself wearing but I knew I was going to be asking the impossible of the boutiques when we decided to bring our wedding date forward,” Wendy says.

I opted for a sample dress that stole my heart. It was a stunning off-the-shoulder lace style called Odette from the Blue Collection by Enzoani. I teamed it with some beautiful shoes by the designer Freya Rose and an elegant hair accessory.”

Stephen decided on a blue suit teamed with a waistcoat and no tie and the couple’s labradors wore bespoke collars, leads and bandanas.

“Edward’s bandana was printed with the words ‘I Loved Her First’ while Ellie’s one (our little female rescue) was customised with the word ‘Flowergirl’,” Wendy says. “Chester had the job of being our ring bearer. My friend Diane from ZukieStyle made the matching burgundy collars, leads and bandanas with the wording in white stitching and Chester’s bandana featured a secret pocket to hold the rings!”

Ready, set, plan!

County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

ello to all my fellow nearlyweds-to-be!

My wedding is just over a year away, and as much as I hate to admit it, I’m officially a bridezilla! I’m obsessively organised at the best of times, but knowing we have a whole day to plan with all eyes on us has sent my OCD into overdrive. My fiancé, Dave, calls it ‘wedding brain’ and likes to tease me about my folders and schedules, but keeping everything neat is definitely helping reduce my anxiety. Obviously, I have ages until our big day, but I find myself dreaming about silly things, like the wrong flowers turning up, Dave forgetting his suit (a strong possibility) or my dress not fitting. Some of my friends tying the knot have admitted to being the same, so if you find yourself worrying about trivial details, don’t panic, you’re not alone!

We’re complete foodies and were excited to go through the menus and make a decision – even though the process did make me snack constantly and ruined my wedding diet. We needed to confirm a company without tasting anything due to lockdown restrictions, which the control freak in me found pretty stressful as we didn’t want to make the wrong decision. So before committing, we researched the companies, looked at reviews, compared prices, locations, COVID-19 policies and the menus until (finally) we had a winner.

To keep things relaxed, we’ve decided on a barbecue instead of a traditional three-course meal and have booked a tasting for later in the year – hurrah!

He was lovely and put us both at ease right away. I made a list of questions to ask him (colour-coded of course), and he answered each one effortlessly.

He had great reviews online, and we felt really confident about booking him. We’ve organised a pre-wedding shoot later this year, which will hopefully make us feel more comfortable in front of the camera!

PRETTY AS A PICTURE Due to 2020’s wedding wipeout and the increase of rescheduled weddings to an already busy summer wedding season, we started looking right away for our photographer before they were all booked. I’ve worked at County Wedding Magazines for almost five years, and during that time, I’ve seen hundreds of amazing weddings, which made finding the perfect supplier feel really daunting.

We started by looking through wedding magazines and Instagram and narrowed down our list to five potentials. We found that most photographers don’t generally include their pricing on their website, so we emailed all of them and asked for their brochures and price lists.

THE FLOWERS Wildflower Floristry is a local independent florist based in Plymouth, Devon. Owner Lucy Cooper tells us how she works hard to try and make the wedding designs as eco-friendly as possible. “This is by sourcing as many flowers as we can from our local Cornish flower grower keeping our floral mechanics as plastic-free and sustainable as possible.” She continues, “by sourcing our varieties in this way, we can keep our carbon emissions as low as possible and by using mainly seasonal flowers that are not forced to grow, we can keep energy levels down. Also, by using plastic-free and often reusable mechanics to make our arrangements, we can keep our wastage low too.”

Lucy describes how wedding designs that have become a fast favourite in the past year are oasis-free hanging arrangements such as show-stopping garlands and hanging clouds which make truly spectacular décor and also wild and seasonal bridal bouquets. “It’s these designs that can suit so many different wedding themes, and each is personalised to the wedding date.”

We’re both interested in photography so how can we ensure amazing wedding photos?

Meet the expert: Jennifer Jane is an award-winning, luxury fine art wedding photographer based in Devon capturing timeless and elegant, yet relaxed photographs.

Jennifer says: Many elements go into planning a wedding, from deciding on the dress and flowers to the cake and entertainment. But top of this list, after booking the venue, should be the photographer. Your wedding day will go by in the blink of an eye and the photos will be the one permanent and lasting reminder so you’ll want them to look amazing and reflect the love, joy and happiness from the day. Your chosen photographer will capture these elements but there are a few things that you can do yourselves that will help your photographer deliver those incredible images. ❤ If you’re having getting ready photographs taken, pick a spacious room that offers plenty of natural light, turning off any overhead lights and lamps and opening any curtains or blinds. When your make-up artist and hair stylist are at work, sit facing towards the window so that your face will be lit by soft light. ❤ It can be easy for the room where the bridal party are getting ready to look cluttered so keep an eye on the background and every so often, have a quick tidy. You don’t want empty glasses, plates or carrier bags and rubbish making an appearance in the background. ❤ The details are just as integral to the wedding as everything else. Many couples love to see these images weaved together as part of the story of the day in their finished album. If you’d like your dress, shoes and flowers photographed, put these together with any other details you might like captured such as perfume and jewellery. If your dress comes on a plastic hanger, replace it with an ivory padded one which will look much nicer in the shots. ❤ If you’re planning on having confetti thrown at your wedding then let your photographer know in advance. They can arrange your guests quickly and efficiently after the ceremony and if you supply the confetti yourself, opting for natural petals looks so pretty. ❤ It’s good to have a few formal family photographs. To get the most out 62

of these, keep them to a minimum of between six to eight without too many people in them. Formal pictures can take between three to five minutes per photo, so the more you have, the longer they’ll take. If you give your photographer a list of the groups you’d like, they’ll be able to whizz through them. ❤ One of the best things that you can give your photographer that helps them to achieve the most amazing wedding images is time, especially the period between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast. During this time, you’ll be having your confetti shot, formal photographs (perhaps including an entire guest picture) plus those of you both as a couple and greeting and socialising with your guests. It’s also the time when your photographer will capture your table set-up and cake, whilst the light is still optimal and nothing has been disturbed. If you give yourself a minimum of two hours, that’ll be enough time to achieve all of these aspects without feeling rushed. ❤ When it comes to the speeches, there’s been a recent trend for having them at the beginning of the meal (to get them out of the way) or to split them between courses. I still believe that the best time for speeches is at the end of the meal. By this time, the empty plates and glasses have been cleared so your photos won’t include these, and your guests are more receptive to giving your speeches the attention and laughter they deserve, resulting in beautiful pictures of happy guests.

What’s the best season to get married?

Simon says: We’re all familiar with the tradition of the summer bride, and it’s still the most popular and expensive season to get married. However, more couples are opting for spring, autumn or even late-winter weddings.

SPRING – MARCH, APRIL AND MAY Spring officially starts in March and with its association of new beginnings, it seems like the perfect time to tie the knot and start your new life together.

There are also two bank holidays and an Easter weekend at this time of the year, which means you could enjoy a long weekend of celebrations.

During this season, the gardens of venues spring into life - wildflower meadows burst into colour, hanging baskets spill over with bright blooms and pink blossom covers the trees - so outdoor wedding photographs are definitely on the cards. Flowers for your bouquets are also more available with anemones, marigolds, and lily of the valley all in bloom. Daffodils are a bright and budget-friendly option to decorate the tables with.

When it comes to a colour theme, look to Easter for inspiration with pretty pastels including pink, yellow and blue for bridesmaids dresses and flowers and table decorations. Or keep it fresh and natural with green and white throughout. If you’re getting married near the Easter weekend, bowls of sugar-coated chocolate eggs make great favours and an Easter egg hunt on the grounds of the venue is always popular with the little ones.

The evenings are lighter at this time of the year, and the days are fresh but often sunny, but it can rain a lot too. If you’re opting for an outdoor wedding, make sure you can bring the ceremony inside at the last minute if there’s a sudden spring shower.

SUMMER – JUNE, JULY AND AUGUST If you’re yearning for an outdoor wedding, the summer months are when you’re more likely to enjoy glorious sunshine and warm days and evenings.

Getting married in the open air surrounded by friends and family is so romantic. But while you may be happy to stand in the sun while you exchange your vows, not all your guests will be so choose an outdoor venue that offers some shade too, such as a tree or parasols.

Nothing screams summer like a glass of Pimm’s served in the garden as guests arrive alongside chilled fizz. Remember to have jugs of water available as well to keep everyone hydrated. A traditional sit-down three-course wedding breakfast may feel too much when the temperature is high so opt for something more laid-back like a barbecue, hog roast or a buffet of fresh salad, cheese and cold meats followed by ice cream

for dessert.

A summer wedding is a perfect time to indulge in colour. Think bright red, fizzy orange, fuchsia pink and aqua blue. Big, bold flowers like hydrangeas, chrysanthemums, cosmos, lilies, roses and sunflowers are all in bloom at this time - mix them with palm leaves for a tropical look.

AUTUMN – SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER Autumn is a beautiful season in which to get married when the leaves on the trees turn orange and red, and the days are cooler. September can be pleasantly mild, and Britain often experiences an Indian summer, making this month a popular choice for couples. By the end of October, and into November, there’ll be a chill in the air so it’s best to host the ceremony and celebrations indoors. With Halloween and bonfire night at this time of the year, you can have fun with your theme, decorations, and catering. Opt for traditional warm colours like russet, burnt orange and honey for your bouquet and decorations. Many flowers are still available at this time of the year so mix them with foliage, berries and even pumpkins for an autumnal feel. Serve a hearty wedding breakfast with local seasonal ingredients and because it’s close to bonfire night, gather your guests around a firepit roasting marshmallows served with hot chocolate (or something stronger!)

Finish your celebrations with fireworks and sparklers.

WINTER - DECEMBER, JANUARY, FEBRUARY Winter weddings are becoming more popular, especially those that are held in the build-up to Christmas and New Year. With Christmas on the horizon, venues look magical decorated with fairylights and candles and everyone is in the party spirit. Combine your wedding with Christmas celebrations and serve mulled wine to guests as they arrive followed by turkey with all the trimmings.

The temperature will be nippy but if you’re lucky, you may see some winter sun or even a smattering of snow on the ground which always makes for beautiful pictures. The key is to ensure the venue is warm and cosy for guests and if there’s an open fire somewhere, use it.

Keep your bridesmaids warm with stylish pashminas that can easily be slipped off for the pictures and pop a pile of blankets and throws into a basket and let guests help themselves if they feel chilly. What about the other winter months? Getting married in January gives everyone something to look forward to and suppliers are less likely to be busy at this time of the year. Hopefully, your guests will be happy to give up their dry January or new year’s health kick for your wedding day. Getting married during February, especially around Valentine’s Day, is a romantic time to tie the knot and the first shoots of spring are just beginning to show.

THE HEALTHY Achieve the wedding tresses of your dreams with help from trichologist Anabel Kingsley

A

nabel Kingsley, daughter of renowned trichologist Philip Kingsley, is a consultant trichologist and president of global brand Philip Kingsley with clinics in London and New York.

Inspired by her father from an early age, she has an immense passion for hair and scalp health. The depth of her knowledge in the field is practically endless, so who better to turn to for advice on getting your locks wedding-ready?

Here, Anabel gives us the benefit of her wisdom on everything from achieving the right length for that perfect up do, to nutrition and the impact of stress.

DRY HAIR PRONE TO BREAKAGE? Dry hair usually occurs as a result of too much heat-styling and bleaching, as well as UV, chlorinated and salt water exposure.

You should care for your scalp in a similar way to the skin on your face. I’d suggest shampooing daily if you can, but certainly don’t leave more than three days between washes.

Daily toning of the scalp is also helpful. Apply a soothing, antimicrobial toner containing witch hazel or camphor after shampooing, conditioning and towel-drying hair. You could also benefit from gentle weekly exfoliation.

Exfoliating masks should be applied preshampoo and left on for around 20 minutes.

Good ingredients to look out for are aloe vera and betaine salicylate. Then, to moisturise dry

strands, work a pre-shampoo conditioner into your hair once a week, or twice if it’s particularly parched.

When you heat-style, hold the dryer at least 12 inches away to avoid placing excessive heat on the hair shaft. Then stop when it’s only just dry, as applying heat to already dry hair will remove moisture from within rather than the water sitting on top. Limit use of straighteners and tongs as much as possible, but when you find yourself reaching for them be sure to use a heat protective spray or serum such as Philip Kingsley’s Finishing Touch Polishing Serum and don’t go over the same areas repeatedly.

HELP, MY HAIR’S NOT GROWING! Take care of your scalp; it’s your hair’s support system. A healthy scalp promotes healthy hair

BEAUTY INTERVIEW growth. Following the aforementioned daily cleanse, tone and mask regime is a great first step on the road to luscious long locks.

Provided you’re not experiencing hair loss, but simply want to maximise your hair’s growth potential, eating well will certainly help. Hair isn’t an essential tissue – it’s the last part of you to receive nutrients, but the first to have them withheld. So, any nutritional deficiency can negatively impact your hair long before it affects your general health.

Eating at least a palm-sized portion of protein and a serving of complex carbohydrates at breakfast and lunch will help your strands to grow long and strong. It’s important never to skip breakfast. This is the most important meal of the day for your hair as it’s when energy levels to the follicles are at their lowest. A great example of a healthy-hair breakfast would be poached eggs with whole-wheat toast, quinoa porridge with berries and toasted almonds, or smoked salmon on a bagel.

Don’t be afraid to snack as the energy needed to form hair cells drops four hours after eating. I recommend reaching for a nutrient-dense healthy snack such as crudité and hummus, fresh fruit or toast with almond butter.

Overall, make sure you eat a balanced diet – if you’re deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral it can affect your hair and it’s growth. Amino acids, omega 3, zinc, iron and vitamin B12 are all crucial. However, try to avoid mercury-rich fish, such as tuna and swordfish as high levels can affect the growth cycle. Likewise, if you suffer from dandruff, cut back on full-fat dairy products as this can trigger flaking and itching.

Finally, be gentle. Unlike your skin, your strands don’t regenerate if they’re damaged.

So, be careful when you style, brush, detangle, shampoo and towel dry.

WHAT PRODUCTS ARE BEST FOR ME? Like skincare, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution

to haircare. The integrity of a product and what hair texture it will work for largely depends on the concentration and quality of the ingredients, which is well nigh impossible to ascertain from the labels. We have to trust the description given as a guide, but I’d recommend that as a rule of thumb you don’t choose a shampoo based on normal, oily or dry descriptions, as your normal won’t be someone else’s normal. Instead, pick one that’s formulated based on hair texture.

The following should help steer you in the right direction: ❤ Afro Caribbean hair. Often prone to damage as weak points form along the hair shaft where curls occur, and is also highly porous. Choose a shampoo that intensively moisturises and gently cleanses at the same time. ❤ Coarse hair. More porous than medium or fine textures, it’s prone to moisture loss becoming dry and frizzy. Use a re-moisturising shampoo with anti-static ingredients.

❤ Medium texture. Tends to get slightly oily at the roots and dry at the ends. Use a moisture-balancing shampoo to address both needs. ❤ Fine hair. With more oil glands on the scalp hair can become lank and easily weighed down. Use a cleansing yet gently bodybuilding shampoo rich in thickening proteins.

STRESS TEST Stress can really do a number on your hair, mainly because it’s bad for your health in general. When you’re feeling stressed, your brain doesn’t distinguish between the stress you might be under at work or from planning a wedding, and the kind you’d experience in a life-ordeath situation. As such, the chemical reactions produced in your body are similar and result in a fight or flight response, triggering unwanted hair and scalp effects such as excessive daily hair fall and increased sebum production.

In terms of stress management techniques, it really depends on what works for you and your schedule. Some find Pilates and yoga classes helpful, while others prefer at-home meditation or using mindfulness apps a couple of times a day.

Alternatively, you may find walking, swimming or reading relaxing.

Hair loss in itself is stressful and while it’s difficult to remain calm, I advise my clients to be patient, trust in the treatment and leave their worries with us at the clinic. Once a person steps through our doors, it’s our job to put them at ease and provide them with a comprehensive treatment plan. I also advise them not to Google!

There’s so much mis-information online, and the internet can come up with some pretty scary and unhelpful things.

Hannah Faulder receives a true Yorkshire welcome at The Alice Hawthorn in Nun Monkton rriving in Nun Monkton is like stepping back in time. Nestled between York and Harrogate, the village is home to a 20-acre green surrounded by picture-perfect cottages; at the centre is a twinkling pond, complete with dabbling ducks. Insects buzz merrily through the swaying grass and cows lazily graze among the buttercups. The huge maypole evokes that nostalgic country village feel.

This bucolic setting is the home of the Grade IIlisted Alice Hawthorn. The pub has been expertly reimagined as a destination dining spot with luxury rooms while remaining true to its purpose at the heart of village life. We were told that the pub’s namesake was a famous racehorse owned by local man John Plummer, who unexpectedly received the horse in a will and named it after the local blacksmith’s daughter.

The building looks every bit the archetypal country pub, especially with its cosy, dog-friendly bar, and its serene setting means it couldn’t be more perfect for a chilled-out honeymoon or post-vow getaway. After a long few months of lockdown followed by grey and drizzly weather, my husband, Cal, and I were delighted to find that spring had finally sprung when we arrived at The Alice Hawthorn at the end of May.

STAY We checked into one of the four Pub Rooms, which boasted postcard-worthy village-green

views. Quiet despite the hubbub of the restaurant, the room’s high ceilings and exposed beams create drama, while the comfort, amenities and calming palette were homely. The room was decorated with exceptional taste; it’s a real skill to retain the character of a place like this while injecting a modern edge. I particularly enjoyed luxuriating in the freestanding bath tub before jumping into the enormous bed with its crisp white sheets.

A tour of the newly launched Garden Rooms to the rear of the pub showed that the impeccable style is carried throughout. With more than just a nod to its agricultural roots, the rooms are constructed from Douglas fir and finished inside and out with light-coloured timber. The result is an oasis of calm, with a feeling of space and an abundance of natural light.

EAT The restaurant has long been a foodie destination. Chef partner John Topham focuses his talents on creating incredible menus with seasonal produce and local ingredients. To me, food that reflects the locality and is at one with its setting is real luxury. The service is wonderful; attentive yet informal, the friendly staff add to the vibe. We particularly enjoyed chatting with the lovely Enzo, whom we ended up having a drink with while he told us stories of the pub’s heritage.

For foodie couples, there’s a gorgeous barn-style private dining room, which would make the most wonderful big-day setting for up to 30 guests.

The Yorkshire asparagus starter with poached hen’s eggs and croquette potatoes just tasted of springtime, while my veggie option of harissa roast aubergine with tabbouleh and broadbean pesto had the most wonderful balance of flavours. My meat-eating husband had the special: stone bass with gnocchi and mussels, which he devoured. On the second night, he proclaimed the Whitby crab mayo with

guacamole and sweetcorn ice cream the best starter he’d ever eaten. In the morning, you must treat yourself to the breakfast. The crushed avocado and poached egg on sourdough is the ideal way to start your day.

Although we couldn’t take advantage of the hotel’s Pizza in the Gardens nights (they start in June, so for a future trip, perhaps?), we could just imagine being in the Mediterranean-style setting of the beer garden, toes-in-grass, with the smell of stone-baked pizza in the air and a jazz band creating the perfect summer-evening atmosphere.

EXPLORE If you can drag yourself away, there are plenty of great places to check out before retiring to the serenity of your room… ❤ The National Trust’s Beningbrough Hall is accessible via a ferryboat across the river from Nun Monkton. The Italianate hall is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens. ❤ There’s plenty of gorgeous countryside to explore on foot. We visited the village’s pretty church with its William Morris-designed stained-glass window, grabbed a sneak peak at the grand Priory and strolled down to the river. There’s even a handy book of walks in the rooms. ❤ Yorkshire Heart Vineyard is about a mile down the road. We couldn’t leave without a bottle of their rosé wine. ❤ Nearby Harrogate is a charming Victorian spa town with pretty gardens and boutique shops. A trip to the famous Bettys Tea Rooms is practically a legal obligation while here (that’s what I told my husband anyway). ❤ York is a huge draw with the city walls to explore, the huge Gothic cathedral, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Railway Museum. It’s a busy day, but retiring to The Alice Hawthorn’s beer garden for a wellearned pint makes it all worth it.
