y much-loved parents are celebrating 50 years of genuinely happy marriage this June which, in this day and age, is a remarkable achievement. Not only have they provided a happy home life for my brother and me to grow up in – and there’s not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for the carefree childhood that we had – they still provide a loving family unit for us now that we’re adults. When I watch how they love, respect and support one another, take care of each other and talk and laugh a lot, I realise that these are the key ingredients to a long and successful marriage. As a family, we’ll be celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary this June and I can’t wait.

Another big celebration taking place in June is The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and plenty of our local suppliers will be taking part so whatever you’re planning for the extended bank holiday weekend, enjoy this historic milestone.

SEARCYS RECREATES ROYAL WEDDING CAKE FOR ITS 175TH ANNIVERSARY

The UK’s oldest British caterer, in residence at historical venues across the UK including in Oxfordshire, is celebrating its 175th anniversary with the recreation of a royal wedding cake created by its founder, John Searcy, 126 years ago. The caterer has taken a trip back through its archives to the 1896 royal wedding of Princess Maud, then the future Queen of Norway, to Prince Carl of Denmark. The breathtaking multitiered cake was adorned with confectionary and decorated with fine sugar work flowers, roses and angels, along with the Royal Arms of England and Denmark.

In tribute to its founder, Searcys has recreated the same cake, in partnership with baker Elizabeth Solaru of Elizabeth’s Cake Emporium. Working alongside Searcy’s pastry chef, Yvonne Graham, the confectioners spent three weeks completing the cake to reflect its original design. Five tiers of Dundee fruit cake are covered with delicate marzipan and white and gold latticework icing and topped with carefully crafted sugar work of flowers, fruits, cherubs and lions.

The Princess Maud Wedding cake can be made to order for any wedding celebrations booked across its iconic venues.

The new four-star plus Hotel La Tour has opened its doors in Milton Keynes, combining modern sophistication with timeless elegance following a multimillion-pound development. HENLEY FESTIVAL LAUNCHES NEW CHARITY INITIATIVE RISE

To coincide with its 40th anniversary, Henley Festival has launched a new charitable initiative called RISE designed to nurture the next generation of talent to take their first steps into the world of performance and creativity, both in front and behind the spotlight. RISE provides opportunities for young musicians, comedians and visual artists to perform or show their work, as well as helping them before and after with marketing and production. This sits alongside a work experience programme to support aspiring talent working behind the scenes, including sound engineers, lighting designers and stage managers. The property has recently launched a new cottage to add to its bespoke room collection. HEYTHROP PARK, CHIPPING NORTON Warner Leisure Hotels has opened bookings for Heythrop Park, a 440-acre country hotel that’s reopening its doors in time for summer staycations and mini-moons after undergoing a £40m investment. While this Oxfordshire bolthole doesn’t host weddings, guests can now snap up one of its 337 meticulously designed bedrooms, and it’s a great choice for the first-night stay for those marrying nearby.

Heythrop Park has undergone a complete renovation since being purchased in 2018, to become the 15th property in the adult-only hotel group, Warner Leisure Hotels’ portfolio. Days can be spent enjoying a host of activities from archery to laser clay shooting, or a round of golf on the Bainbridge Championship Golf Course. Those looking for some pre-wedding pampering can unwind with a treatment in the spa complete with a brand-new thermal and sensory suite and outdoor hot tubs.

The 300-year-old Grade II listed property offers loft-inspired lounges, sweeping staircases and a trio of restaurants plus two large theatres hosting daily shows, bands, music festivals and comedy nights.

The opulent manor’s extensive grounds provide the perfect setting for romantic parkland walks and bike rides, with little gems such as the whale cave and a hidden waterfall to discover.

mily and Tom met on Tinder in June 2017 and clicked from their very first date.

“We both love musicals and performing so an in-car sing-along to Defying Gravity from the show Wicked was all it took, along with a race around a gokarting track!” Emily tells us. “Tom proposed just after my birthday in October 2019 at Cahoots, a 1940s-themed bar in London. It was a complete surprise! The timing was perfect as Tom was able to ask my parents’ permission a couple of days beforehand.”

SETTING THE SCENE The couple had viewed a few wedding venues before deciding on De Vere Wokefield Estate. “The hotel was perfect with its grand but homely feel,” Emily explains. “Nothing was too much trouble for the experienced team and they were so flexible when it came to date changes – we had to postpone twice due to the pandemic.”

The couple added some personal touches to their big day including adding photographs of Emily’s grandparents to her bridal bouquet and choosing lyrics from musical theatre songs as their ceremony readings. “We walked out of the ceremony to a recording of my grandad playing the organ,” Emily tells us.

The couple decorated their day with autumnal colours. “Our centrepieces were tall clear glass vases filled with white hydrangeas, peach and red roses, ferns and trailing ivy,” Emily describes. “They were placed on large round log slices with the table names written on them in pyrography and our place names were also written in pyrography on smaller log slices. Our table names related to a location in one of our favourite musicals – the table that was hosting guests from further afield was called Gander from the musical Come From Away. Little did our guests know that

While we didn’t have a wedding planner, we were so lucky to have the support of the amazing staff at De Vere Wokefield Estate.” - Emily and Tom the top table called Our House was a subtle clue as to our first dance, but more about that later!”

The couple’s choice of flowers also included burnt-orange roses, white gypsophila and eucalyptus leaves. “We had a birch flower arch as a ceremony backdrop which was transferred to the room hosting the wedding breakfast and evening reception where it had fairylights weaved into it,” Emily says. “We also had two sprays of flowers displayed on plinths either side of the entrance doors, burgundy hydrangeas tied on to seats with hessian and ribbon and candles placed in lantern holders decorating the fireplace.”

The couple opted for circular tables, even for the top table to ensure everybody was able to talk easily. “We gave each guest a teacup and saucer that had been made into a candle by my parents as favours,” Emily says.

The couple’s cake was made by a friend of theirs, Patricia Ellis who runs Titch’s Treats. “It followed a woodland theme and was displayed on three round log slices at varying heights,” Emily explains. “The delicious flavours were chocolate, carrot cake and coffee cake.”

For starters, guests were served butternut squash soup with mascarpone cream. “The main course was a rump of lamb with warm potato salad, pea puree, dolcelatte blue cheese cream and port jus,” Emily says. “The dessert was Bailey’s cheesecake with espresso syrup and roasted coffee beans and we also provided canapés for our champagne reception following the ceremony.”

LOOKING THE PART Emily wore an ivory wedding gown by Diane Le Grand purchased from Sophie Grace Bridal along with a tiara gifted to her by the boutique. “My dress had a classic scoop neckline, a detailed waist and ballgown-style skirt with tiny buttons cascading down the back,” she says. “I wore a pair of my grandma’s pearls and some court shoes with a low heel and diamante T-bar straps. My hair was styled in a low loose bun with make-up inspired by a natural vintage style, finished with a Bobbi Brown lipstick in orange.”

Tom and his groomsmen wore dark-grey tailcoat suits teamed with white shirts, cream waistcoats, burnt orange-coloured cravats and oxblood Oxford shoes. “Our beautiful bridesmaids wore floor-length dresses in the same colour as the cravats featuring long sleeves and an embroidered flower pattern across the bodice,” Emily says. “They were exactly what I was looking for! They each wore their hair in a half-up, half-down style with curls and hair slides that I made myself with gold leaves, cream flowers, pearls and diamanté.”

TIME TO ENTERTAIN A highlight of the day was the best man’s speech which was accompanied by artwork from Daryl Harvey Illustration and Design showing key stages of Tom’s life and their relationship. “We also had an air hockey table at the evening reception which is a favourite pastime of ours – it certainly kept the younger guests entertained!”

The couple hosted a mid-evening musical theatre cabaret which they put together themselves featuring their talented friends from local theatre societies.

“One of the performers even personalised the lyrics to their song to make it relevant to us,” Emily says. “We also hired Space Bar Productions to entertain our guests during the reception who were fantastic and worked from a playlist that we had put together for them. It included classic wedding party songs and some modern hits to suit all age groups. They worked with our guests to fulfil requests, creating a fantastic atmosphere. A highlight was that, after two long years of keeping it a secret, we were able to perform our choreographed first dance to the music of the Madness musical, Our House which was a wonderful surprise for everyone.”

tacie and Max met on their first day at university.

“We were in the same halls of residence and both studying economics,” Stacie tells us.

Max proposed on holiday in Italy during a road trip. “Max surprised me by renting an Alfa Romeo Spider car that we drove from Florence to Villa Bordoni in Tuscany,” Stacie says. “As we stopped to enjoy a walk, he popped the question and I couldn’t have been happier!”

Max and his groomsmen hired their morning suits. Along with his best man, Max chose a different colour tie to stand out.

We also hired a saxophonist who the band recommended. Our guests loved them all and we have even had a few people book the band for their celebrations.

The venue works closely with the catering comp any Heritage Venues. With little time to go befor e the big day, we chose our menu from their website and didn’ t have a tasting session. The food was delicious, there were large portions and we had so many compliments from our guests.

The team made everything run seamlessly, they even managed to change things around and reass ure us on the big day as we woke up to heavy rain and thund erstor ms!

lex and Guy met through Alex’s cousin Rob who ended up being one of Guy’s ushers. “Rob came to live with my family and joined Henley College where he met a group of friends, including Guy,” Alex tells us.

“He invited him to the house one day and we met and hit it off immediately!”

After being together for more than 10 years, Guy still managed to surprise Alex with the proposal. “In early November 2020 (just before the second lockdown) we travelled to Scotland to stay at our friend Henry’s parents’ house for a few days,” Alex tells us. “We joined Henry on a woodland walk, following a stream up a hill to an open expanse of the countryside with views across the hills and loch. Guy popped the question there but he hadn’t told Henry that he was planning this! Naturally, Henry became another one of our ushers.”

SETTING THE SCENE “We wanted a blank canvas for our special and didn’t want to be bound by any rules or restrictions, especially given the uncertainty around the pandemic at the time,” Alex tells us. “We booked All Saints’ Church, Rotherfield Peppard which is the village where Guy’s parents live.

Guy was a regular attendee there during his primary school years and when one of our wedding planners, who just happens to live in the rectory farmhouse next door, said that we could use her horse field for our marquee reception, it felt like it was meant to be. Our guests only had to walk 100 metres from the church to the reception and were greeted by an open field surrounded by sloping woodland with far-flung views.”

The couple wanted to create a relaxed festival vibe at their reception with a party atmosphere. “We chose a sage-green and blush-pink colour theme with pops of purple and gold,” Alex explains. “The flowers were always going to take centre stage because we wanted to showcase local, seasonal blooms with as much texture and scent as possible. We also wanted to keep our suppliers as local as possible in keeping with our sustainable values.”

Alex and Guy decided on an understated vibe to decorate the inside of the marquee to allow the flowers and food to stand out. “We had four long tables, plus a top table, dressed with white table cloths, napkins, chairs and brushed-gold cutlery,” Alex says. “Our place names, menus, table names and order of services were all printed in the same design; white with a subtle light pink and green floral pattern. Our table plan was a key element of the day – I printed a black and white polaroid image of each guest and tied them with ribbon on to a large board. Each table name was listed under the relevant photograph and we chose names including Rose, Eucalyptus, Thistle, Snowberry and Dahlia after some of their real counterparts. Guests had to find their faces to discover their table name which meant that they didn’t know exactly who they were seated with, which made the day all the more fun. We spent a long time setting the seating plan combinations, so being sat at the top table watching the hand-picked combinations of people deep in conversation was really rewarding - we even have one relationship that has since blossomed!”

The entrance to the marquee was decorated with flowers and Alex and Guy gave each guest a packet of wildflower seeds as one of their favours. “The other one was a cork with Alex & Guy and our wedding date printed on it that our wine supplier had printed for us,” Alex explains.

“Our wonderful florist had also made a large floral spiral that was wrapped around one of the central poles inside the marquee, as well as tall centrepieces using varieties that complemented one another which tied everything together. We had a couple of gold urns in the church that were repurposed to sit behind the top table, and the pew ends were also tied around the external marquee poles. The only floral aspect created for the church that wasn’t reused was the half arch over the entrance which looked fantastic in the family photographs.”

The couple’s decision to hire a wedding car was a last-minute one that they’re glad they did. “We had a black and white Royale Windsor to take my parents and me to the wedding which also transported Guy and his best man from their hotel earlier that morning,” Alex tells us. “With the reception being so close to the venue, the original idea was for us to walk to the field along with everyone else, but it was wonderful to go for a 10-minute drive around the block in the sunshine with the roof down after the ceremony. It turns out that that’s the only time we got alone with each other all day!”

The catering was taken care of by Simon who had recently taken over at Alex’s parents’ local pub where he had transformed its food scene. “He created some delicious dishes using fairly local, seasonal produce,” Alex explains. “Our guests were offered a choice of five canapés during the reception and for the wedding breakfast, the main course was banquet-style food that everyone could share. There was roasted lamb shoulder with salsa verde, peri-peri butterflied chicken, fire-roasted potatoes with blackened courgettes, and light summer salads. Most of the main course was cooked on an open fire and we strategically placed one of the grills within sight of the guests to add a little theatre! Cheeseboards were placed on the tables in time for the speeches instead of dessert and there was a doughnut wall later on. During the evening, guests tucked into chicken sliders, lamb flatbreads and roasted veggie paninis. This went down a treat with any guests who weren’t permanently attached to the dancefloor!” Alex says.

Guy’s sister is a keen baker, so the couple trusted her with the task of making their wedding cake and she did not disappoint. “It was a three-tier naked cake featuring three different flavours and buttercream icing,” Alex describes. “It was decorated with flowers and a brushed-gold cake topper.”

LOOKING THE PART Alex wore the dress called Astrid by the designer Suzanne Neville. “I went along to my appointment at the Beaconsfield-based Ellie Sanderson

Boutique convinced that I wanted a long-sleeved lace gown but after trying on many different styles, Kirsty at the boutique showed me Astrid,” she explains. “As soon as I tried it on, I knew it was the one.”

Alex teamed her dress with a single-tiered veil decorated with small tulle butterflies and pearls. “I wore a pearl hair slide, a pair of block heels decorated with a large pom pom, an amethyst necklace which my grandmother had given to me for my 21st birthday and my something borrowed was a gold and sapphire ring from my mother worn on my right hand.”

Guy chose a morning suit made especially for him that consisted of a black jacket and grey trousers. “Being 6’5” he hadn’t found anything that fitted him properly,” Alex tells us. “He chose a stylish sandy-coloured waistcoat and green silk tie which looked fabulous and he ended up doing the splits in his suit!” Our ushers rented morning suits in the same style as Guy’s teamed with grey waistcoats, matching green ties and cufflinks.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE During the evening, there was a firepit placed outside the marquee surrounded by festoon lighting and deckchairs. “We had a saxophonist based in the bar area who played pop covers,” Alex says. “He provided just the atmosphere we wanted! It was an effective way of incorporating live music into the reception without having to have multiple musicians. In the evening, we had a fantastic DJ who generally played dance music but mixed some 70s and 80s songs into modern beats which was a huge hit with everyone!”

Taking home awards for the world’s best new contemporary gin (42% ABV and below), and the best English contemporary gin (42% ABV and below), this outstanding achievement comes just a few months after Cookham Cocktail Club, a Berkshire-based at-home cocktail experience club, burst on to the scene.

Cookham Cocktail Club Gin No. 5 was created by Berkshire-based Cookham Cocktail Club and distilled by Henley Gin Distillery. Incredibly smooth, this premium gin is composed of 11 different botanicals, with a spicy kick from black and pink peppercorns, cinnamon and cardamom and balanced with yuzu peel and blackcurrant, resulting in a refreshing finish. Unlike other gins, CCC Gin No.5 is a unique sipping gin, designed to be enjoyed simply poured over ice, with a slice of orange although it still tastes great with a mixer or in cocktails.

Founded by Julia Herd and Stephanie Maher in March 2022, Cookham Cocktail Club provides at-home cocktail tastings with distinctive drinks and enticing experiences. The duo decided they wanted to build their portfolio of products, starting with CCC Gin No.5.

Julia tells us: “When we launched the cocktail club, we wanted to create our own products too, and as gin lovers, this was our immediate choice. Even though the gin market is incredibly competitive, I believed there was room for a top-shelf, premium sipping gin that stands on its own without needing to go down the route of adding flavours or combining

with mixers - although that is of course an option for those who don’t like it straight.”

She continues, “To be awarded not one but two accolades, two months after launch in The World Gin Guide Awards is mind-blowing.”

Although Julia and Stephanie only launched the gin in December, they have already secured a listing with the Karma Sanctum Hotel Group, and select local boutique establishments, and are in conversations with several other luxury hotel chains. Moreover, they also try to work with local businesses where possible and have already developed a gin sorbet by partnering with Agosti Gelato. Their latest project sees them working with Moneyrow Beans on a gin espresso martini.

FABULOUS FLORALS At Milton Keynes-based bespoke florist Field Gate Flowers, wedding blooms don’t cost the earth. Sustainability is on everyone’s minds right now and the wedding industry is no exception to this trend, with increasing numbers of bridal parties opting to create showstopping weddings with lower environmental impact. One of the biggest trends that sees no sign of stopping is locally grown floral arrangements and limiting choices to varieties in season that are great ways to reduce environmental impact while not compromising on creating dream wedding displays.

COOL CAKES Reading-based Keighers of Caversham offers bespoke cakes for all occasions created using the highest-quality ingredients. Master baker Anna Keigher is hosting a workshop on 13th June at local art studio Creativ.Spaces, run by mother and daughter duo Sue and Tamalia Reeves, where she will be demonstrating how to achieve cocoa butter painting on designs. The workshop covers the techniques to create

hand-painted cookies for wedding favours or gifts. Later this year, she will be running a wafer paper flower workshop which will also be part of the hen party activities on offer at Creativ.Spaces. HANDS-ON ENTERTAINMENT If you’ve been lucky enough to see a silhouette artist perform at a wedding then you’ll know that not only is this a rare art form but also that silhouette cutting is a great way of entertaining guests, keeping them amused during the photographs.

It’s a good icebreaker as Silhouette Sarah walks around chatting to them whilst cutting paper portraits freehand using nothing but scissors. Think of vintage cameos like Jane Austin’s trademark silhouette or Mrs Whistledown’s silhouette in Bridgerton - each one is cut freehand using nothing but a pair of scissors with no drawing first, or other trickery. Each silhouette is a flattering likeness of the person whatever the age so everyone will be wanting one and Sarah can cut approximately 70 silhouettes in three hours, creating fabulous favours.

Sarah created a complimentary special commission from a photograph for a special couple who worked for the NHS during the pandemic and who was getting married.

OUT WITH A BANG! We’d love a grand finale firework display at our wedding, can you help?

Meet the expert: Karl Mitchell-shead is the director of award-winning Illusion Fireworks Ltd based in Wootton, Oxfordshire. The company was voted Best Fireworks Display Provider UK from 2018 to 2021 and it’s a member of the British Pyrotechnists Association (BPA).

Karl says: Hosting a firework display is a fantastic way of bringing everyone together at the end of the evening. Here are our top five things to consider: ♥ Does my venue allow fireworks?

Firstly, it’s important to find out if your chosen wedding venue allows fireworks. Most do, but some may have restrictions. In many cases, the venue may have a preferred supplier and they may also specify that the fireworks must be finished by a certain time or that only low-noise fireworks are permitted. Very few venues allow you to set off your own fireworks because of the insurance liability. At Illusion Fireworks Ltd, we have the highest level of insurance cover required by some venues. ♥ How much should we spend?

We are often asked how much it will cost to provide a fireworks display and all of our displays are bespoke, and designed to suit your budget.

Realistically, a wedding firework display should cost between £1000 and £3500, but we can provide displays locally for as little as £500. ♥ Can we host a firework display to music?

Fireworks choreographed with split-second accuracy to music will provide your guests with a memory that they’ll never forget. Fireworks visually reinforce the powerful emotions experienced while listening to music so the two come together to create a unique spectacle. We can design a display choreographed to a favourite track or even your wedding song for as little as £1695 for up to 250 guests. This includes the hire of our PA system that’s connected to our firing computer - it’s best to have a dedicated PA between the audience and the fireworks because a DJ playing music from the marquee will be overpowered by the display.

♥ Can we have the colours of our wedding theme in our display?

Yes, of course! We can start the display with your chosen colours and include them in the finale, you can even have our famous firework rainbow or love heart shells that are always a winner with the crowd!

Many optional extras allow you to tailor-make a show for your wedding, for example, you can choose to start it with our big red button fireworks or add a large shell one to end the show. ♥ Is it easy to arrange a firework display?

Booking couldn’t be simpler - once you have an idea of what you would like in your show and how much you want to spend (we can discuss any of the above to help you make a decision) then we simply ask you to fill out a booking form and we handle the rest. We will liaise with the venue, carry out a site survey, design your show, set up the fireworks on the day, execute the display and tidy up afterwards.

Loren says: Congratulations on your engagement! Here are my top tips for newly engaged couples: ♥ It’s worth remembering that winter weddings are trickier to photograph. With shorter days and cold natural light, you’ll need a photographer who has plenty of experience in this area. Make sure you know what you want when it comes to the style of your photos, then research a photographer who can achieve this for you. ♥ When selecting your venue, consider the likelihood that you’ll need to have photographs taken inside. If it’s raining, cold or windy, your younger and older guests won’t want to be standing outside waiting for theirs to be taken. If you’re able to have photos outside during the winter months then it’s a bonus. ♥ Wear something that will keep you warm during outdoor couple portraits. I like to get shots at night which is ideal for winter celebrations but even during the warmer months, it can get chilly. ♥ Don’t book your ceremony too late in the day because sunset can be as early as 4 pm during the winter. You don’t want a ceremony to start later than 2 pm otherwise you’ll have very little daylight for photos. Flashes or LED lights are great, but natural light is much better, especially for the group shots. ♥ Finally, think of the benefits of winter weddings. If your venue allows it, using sofas and chairs for group shots creates more interest than the usual images of everyone standing. Plus, there are so many exciting things you can do with night shots, even in the rain!

When is the best time to have a full set of lashes applied ready for my wedding?

Tabitha says: Hair behaves like a sponge and will absorb atmospheric moisture and change form, to frizz or static flyaway hair. It will become dry and stiff if subjected to frost and extreme cold, especially when coming out of warm environments like your home or office. Julija says: We always recommend having a full set of lash extensions done at least two to three days before the wedding to be on the safe side. Remember that you have to visit your lash artist for a consultation and patch test at least 48 hours before the booking. A patch test is essential to eliminate any allergic reactions to the products used. The possibility of an allergic reaction is extremely rare after the negative patch test and having them applied a few days before your wedding gives you time to get used to them, ensuring you’ll be looking your best on the day, with no mascara smudging!

I feel selfish admitting that I didn’t realise how stressful suit shopping would be for Dave. You

always hear about the bride struggling to find the perfect dress, and there’s so much pressure to get it right, but you never really hear the same for the groom-to-be. When we popped into our local suit store a few weeks ago, it surprised me when Dave said he felt stressed trying to make the right decision as he is usually very calm and collected. He tried on a few different styles and colours, but none left him feeling wowed or in his words: ‘like a suit I’m going to get married in’. He came away from that first appointment feeling confused about what to wear and, if anything, a bit deflated.

We decided to leave it for a few weeks and then try again. This time we went to a different store that Dave’s brother had used for his wedding. We visited on a weekday, so it was very quiet, and the team gave Dave their undivided attention. Nothing was too much trouble and, within 30 minutes, Dave had found the perfect suit and was grinning from ear to ear. The team helped reassure him about what style suits his shape and what would look good with our sage green colour scheme. He opted for a three-piece blue suit with a grey waistcoat, brown shoes and a sage green tie and pocket square. As Dave wanted to stand out on the day, we hired the same suit but with a blue waistcoat for the groomsmen and our dads to wear. We’re going back soon to get everyone else fitted, and I’m excited to see them all together on the day.

READY, SET, FILM! We were unsure throughout the planning process if we were going to book a

videographer mainly due to our budget. Dave wasn’t keen on the idea after seeing a few highlight films and with a lot of expense at the time, we decided to leave it. So it surprised me when a few weeks ago Dave said he wanted to book one. He’d seen a friend’s recent wedding video and liked the idea of being able to watch the day back. I’m pleased we decided to go for it, and luckily the supplier that we wanted still had availability. We’ve opted for a half-day package, which includes the ceremony, drinks reception and speeches. Although I would have loved to have had everyone getting ready and our first dance on film, it just made more sense for us financially to go for the smaller package.

I’m really excited to see how it will turn out and be able to get all our friends and family around to watch it after the wedding.

can’t believe that this is the penultimate bride’s diary before I walk down the aisle. It’s so strange knowing that in just a few months I will become Mrs Cullen. I know a few of my married friends have chosen to keep their maiden name or hyphenate but for me, taking Dave’s last name was really important. fter being stuck in the UK for what feels like a lifetime, I’m sure that I’m not alone in saying that I’d forgotten how exciting travelling could be. I was apprehensive about flying again, but the moment I stepped off the plane in tropical Mauritius and the heat hit me, I felt at ease.

WINE AND DINE When I think of the food and drink in Mauritius, I immediately think of rum.

EXPLORING THE ISLAND There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit while on your honeymoon with Mautourco. The local market at Port Louis is a great way of seeing how the locals live and what produce is on offer. You can grab some souvenirs for the family and help support the community in the process.

The Rhumerie de Chamarel is a rum distillery surrounded by tropical gardens that look gorgeous even in the rain. The restaurant is a must-try, especially the rum baba – a soft dessert, almost like a doughnut, that’s been soaked in rum. Take part in a fascinating tour followed by a tasting with all the drinks available to purchase in the gift shop.

If you’re heading down South, take the time to visit Chamarel Falls. It’s the highest waterfall in Mauritius, and there are tortoises, monkeys and more natural wonders nearby.

Sarah Gallivan discovers the great outdoors at Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood Hideaway

E

xperience a luxury escape in the heart of Sherwood Forest at The Sherwood Hideaway at Thorseby. Surrounded by woodland, this selection of luxury lodges and log cabins is an oasis of calm. I stayed with my husband, our two children and dog and it was the perfect opportunity to reconnect after leaving the hustle and bustle of daily life behind us – upon arrival I felt instantly relaxed.

Choose to explore and enjoy the range of activities on offer or simply kick back and relax, the choice is yours.

CHOOSE YOUR HIDEAWAY With a choice of traditional, rustic and woodland lodges, one, two or three bedrooms and the option of taking your furry friend along to a pet-friendly lodge, there’s something for everyone.

We stayed in a Rustic Pet-Friendly lodge and it was gorgeous.

Indoors it boasted stylish interiors, modern fixtures and fittings and a cosy log-burner effect fire. We were greeted with a much-welcomed bottle of wine, locally produced fine chocolates and a selection of treats for the pooch – even he didn’t miss out! Outdoors, there’s the added bonus of a private hot tub, barbeque area and decking area looking out into the forest and the lodges are well laid out allowing for ample external space and privacy.

DISCOVER AND EXPLORE Cycling – Take your bikes to explore more of the Thorseby Estate, Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas. Trails are well marked out along road and dirt tracks and they suit all abilities. What’s more, each lodge has its own cycle rack so your bikes can be easily stored.

Walking – We took a walk through the estate to Thorseby Hall, the Grade I listed 19th-century country house. The tree-lined paths were easy to follow, and my son and daughter loved delving deep into the woods.

The walk took 45 minutes at a steady pace and the coffee and cake in the Thorseby Courtyard, children’s woodland play area and military museum was well worth the stroll.

TIE THE KNOT You can reserve these luxury lodges as accommodation for nuptials at nearby venues or if you’d love a woodland wedding, The Sherwood Hideaway can provide a marquee in which to host your day.

Fishing – If fishing’s your thing, Sherwood Hideaway guests have access to a private members-only fly-fishing lake, approximately 1 mile from the retreat.

Falconry – Walk through the woods with the birds of prey or have them visiting the lodge on your own decking area, book a birthday package or take part in a Falconry Day where you’ll learn how to fly and handle hawks, falcons, owls and eagles, as they glide through the treetops.

Relaxing – Thorsby Hall Spa is on your doorstep. With its fully equipped gym, indoor pool with jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and range of innovative treatments, why not go and indulge?
