elcome to our February/March issue and congratulations to those of you who recently got engaged; we can’t wait to help you plan your special day! Planning your wedding can feel overwhelming, especially at the beginning, but try not to panic. Weddings aren’t onesize-fits-all, so make the day about you, your interests and your love story. For example, if you love Harry Potter, why not incorporate it into your day? After all, it’s your wedding! Having trouble getting started? I found that the best thing to do when I got engaged was to make a list of everything that I’d like to include in my day. From the big things like the venue and photographer down to the smaller details such as the cake topper and jewellery. The list might be a few sentences, or five pages long(!); both are absolutely fine. The list is there so you can find which items are important to you and to help you focus on one thing at a time. Focus on your venue first, as this will dictate the day and time that you’re getting married. Due to the knock-on effects of the pandemic, many venues are still getting booked years in advance, so get your dream space locked in as soon as possible and then you can start thinking about your other suppliers. If you’re not sure what type of venue you want for your big day, check out our venue features for heaps of inspiration.

Chris Boardley, the operations director, tells us: “These are exciting times at Hungarian Hall; after years of planning, designing and building, we will be opening our new accommodation building. Allen Blasdell from Creative Pixel Photography has had an exciting few months. He was awarded a Wedisson Award for the above image and was accepted by ‘This is Reportage’ and ‘Masters of Wedding Photography’ – congratulations! Fully booked for 2024, Allen is taking bookings for 2025 and will be exhibiting at the Ravenwood Hall Wedding Fair on Sunday 21st April 2024. This is the perfect time to meet Allen and discuss your big day requirements. He tells us: “My goal is to be there at your wedding, yet unnoticed, to capture moments that you’ll have missed and gently work with you and your guests to create a set of photos that will make you cry one day and laugh the next. My work as a documentary wedding photographer is to give you photographs that capture the moments, emotions and story of your wedding day as it unfolds. From the prep in the morning with your bridesmaids, where the champagne is flowing freely, to the ceremony where your new partner showed emotions you’d never seen before, to the first dance, where finally all the joy and happiness exploded with crazy, uninhibited dancing.” Find out more about Creative Pixel Photography at www.creativepixelphotos.com

Melissa Cullen visits Dunston Hall Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort

I

n the days leading up to Christmas, I had the pleasure of being invited to stay at the magical Dunston Hall Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort. Located just outside of Norwich, the impressive 18th-century building and surrounding 150 acres of grounds encompass multiple restaurants, a spa and a golf course. My husband, David, and I were excited to explore the area and see what made this hotel such a popular gem. A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD Approaching the hotel via its winding driveway, you are taken through what feels like a forest, quickly separating you from the hustle and bustle of the outside world and immersing you in your own little piece of paradise. A quick check-in later, we were escorted to our room. Greeted by a four-post bed, our luxuriously spacious room had everything you could possibly require for your stay, with the room itself being topped off by fantastic views of the surrounding grounds. Beautifully decorated, the space was complete with a mini-fridge, TV, vanity mirror and a bathroom complete with his and her sinks – perfect for couples. CELEBRATE IN STYLE Exploring the hotel, we noticed the grand function room was set up for a party. The space had a neutral décor throughout, ideal for adding your own touches, and room for 90 guests. There are four other spaces available on-site that are perfect for weddings, so whether you’re planning a large celebration with up to 250 friends and family or an al fresco service, there is something to suit all requirements. FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Having read lots of positive feedback about Dunston Hall Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort’s restaurant, we just about managed to drag ourselves away from our room in time for dinner. The contemporary restaurant is beautifully decorated with an impressive menu. With so many mouth-watering options to choose from, it felt impossible to choose. We decided to order the crispy fried salt and pepper squid to start.

30

These were delicious and I happily could have eaten more. For the main course, I opted for the Sri Lankan chicken curry, while my hubby went for the pork schnitzel. Both were wonderful, as expected, and we saw several other diners digging into their meals, looking equally pleased. To finish, we shared the warm chocolate and hazelnut mini doughnuts and a cup of tea (a must-have). As we waddled back to our room, it’s safe to say we were pleasantly full and I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. JUST KEEP SWIMMING I love a spa trip (who doesn’t?), so when the wonderful team organised for us to have a massage each, I couldn’t wait. I’ve been fortunate enough to have had multiple massages over the years, but the experience was a first for my husband, which gave me the opportunity to look at the massage through a fresh set of eyes. Our masseuses were very skilled; their friendly demeanours and the overall ambience of the rooms instantly made you feel relaxed, all worries evaporating into the oils, incense and calming music. An hour passed by in the space of minutes and we left the spa feeling like we’d been born again. I cannot recommend the spa enough; it’s truly a must for all visitors. A short walk down the hallway from the massage rooms, past the indoor gym and we’d made it to the swimming pool. Generously sized and surrounded by a sauna, steam room and a Jacuzzi, we knew we were in a special place. A few laps, a soak and steam later and we were ready to start our day feeling rejuvenated. A FOND FAREWELL After a relaxing dip in the pool, we made our way to the main restaurant for breakfast. Enjoying a full English breakfast and pastries, we had several cups of tea, trying to delay leaving after such a wonderful stay. Our visit to Dunston Hall Hotel, Spa and Golf Resort was perfect, and we’re planning on visiting again soon. To find out more, visit www.dunstonhallhotel.co.uk

The most perfect day

Katie and Darren were next door neighbours before they realised they were meant to be Images courtesy of AmyLouise Photography

K

atie and Darren first laid eyes on each other when they became next-door neighbours. “We always got along well whenever we bumped into each other, but Darren moved to another house and soon after, so did I,” says Katie. “A few years later, we met at work after I started a new job at the same place as Darren. We were put on the same team during a period of 12-hour shifts and instantly hit it off. There was a mutual attraction and an instant spark between us. We would laugh and talk and we realised we had loads in common. We started meeting outside of work for yoga classes and walks and eventually got together after Darren cooked me an irresistible dinner. That was seven years ago and we have since bought a house together and had twin boys.” Darren popped the question for Katie’s 40th birthday. “He took me away for a hotel break; we had a fantastic time and he spoiled me

rotten,” shares the bride. “I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. I had secretly hoped he might propose, but it didn’t happen. I just told myself to be patient. The next day we came home and I was instructed to get ready for a late birthday lunch at a restaurant with my parents. I was taken to the restaurant, where I was led into a private dining room. To my utter shock and amazement, there were about 40 of my closest family and friends shouting surprise! There was a buffet, cake and presents. Darren had organised the whole thing. To top it all off, he gave a lovely speech and called me up, only to get down on one knee and propose with a gorgeous ring in front of everyone! I was in tears and, of course, said yes. It was lovely to be able to celebrate with everyone straight away and show off my bling!” Read on to see some of Katie’s favourite moments from their big day... 33

I work at Shire Hall as a wedding coordinator for Woodbridge Town Council. I help couples and their guests and support the registrars, so I know the venue incredibly well. Woodbridge is also our home town, so we wanted somewhere local. Shire Hall was small enough to be intimate, big enough for our family and friends and full of character and charm in a beautiful location.

Darren and I bought our wedding cakes from Marks and Spencer, which were all delicious. I placed them on stunning gold cake stands and decorated them with ivory faux roses.

Our gold chairs were transported from Shire Hall to the wedding breakfast at Grundisburgh Village Hall. The space was transformed with faux blossom trees, a flower wall, a sweet cart, a prosecco bike, a fairylight curtain, table decorations and a light-up bar; all the little touches made it look so beautiful. 34

We hired Dana from The Venue Dresser to decorate the space. We opted for flowers, gold banqueting chairs with hessian sashes, floral garlands around the pillars and faux blossom trees by the register table, which looked stunning.

After the ceremony, we enjoyed prosecco outside Shire Hall. Our guests then made their way to our reception venue, Grundisburgh Village Hall, for drinks and canapés on the lawn, while Darren and I were whisked off to Woodbridge Tide Mill in our wedding car. We hired a gold Bentley, which was so luxurious. It even had a mini fridge filled with champagne for us to sip during the journey! Our photographer followed and we had some stunning shots taken by the river, which was so special and very romantic.

We are both real foodies and Jamie Lee Smith Catering and his wonderful team did us proud.

REAL WEDDINGS

My dress, Oceana by Willowby by Watters, was from The Suffolk Wedding Dress Exchange. I was looking for something elegant and sleek yet simple and flattering and my dress ticked all the boxes. I probably tried on over 30 dresses at five different places and had almost given up hope. Before I visited The Suffolk Wedding Dress Exchange, the owner asked me to pick 10 to try from the website. My dress was included in that selection, but when I saw it, I dismissed it as I thought it would wash me out. Just goes to show you have to try on all types of dresses even if you don’t initially like them on the hanger.

I remember watching our sons walk down the aisle in front of me; they walked so well, holding hands, and I felt so proud. They gave Darren a hug when they got to him and it was all I could do to hold back the tears. I also enjoyed walking with my dad and him giving me away.

For me, getting ready was quite a rush as I had appointments at the hair salon, make-up studio and barbers for the twins. I had to get myself ready plus three children with the help of my parents and the twin’s childminder, as well as keep us all fed and watered! Once I had arrived at the ceremony, I actually felt quite calm. I think I was just relieved to get there and pleased that the moment had finally come when I would marry my best friend.

Darren hired his suit from Moss in Ipswich. They were really helpful and the three-day hire period suited our plans. He went for a lightweight tweed three-piece suit with tan shoes, a gold and floral tie with a matching pocket cloth and a pocket watch.

Our best man played background music during the wedding breakfast through the village hall sound system and we had a DJ and singer in the evening. We used Felix Simpson from Norwich; he has an amazing voice and an extensive repertoire of songs he can play. People were up and dancing right away. The DJ was Lee Gibling from LG Entertainment and he was also brilliant. We bought some light-up foam glow sticks from Amazon, which were so much fun while dancing.

At our ceremony, we had a harpist called Louise Binks. We met her at a wedding fair and were so impressed. Her repertoire is amazing and she is so talented. Louise played background music for our guests, played as I walked in, and then played background music during the signing of the register. She also followed us to our reception and played during the canapés, lawn drinks, garden games and photos. 35

Our best friend, Kate, did a lovely reading during our ceremony; we really appreciated that. Another friend of mine, Lisa, went to the trouble of making gift bags for all the children to enjoy during the wedding breakfast. They contained stickers, sweets, colouring books, crayons, and bubbles and were a real hit, keeping the little darlings quiet and entertained!

All of our suppliers were amazing and helped to make our day so special. Our photographer, Amy, was fantastic and provided the most stunning photos and exceptional service. Capturing those special moments is so important for reliving the memories for years to come.

Our main piece of advice for any couple about to get married is to leave enough time to relax, enjoy getting ready and delegate jobs to other people where you can. Have everything organised ahead of the day and give a list of all plans and supplier details to a responsible person in case of any issues on the day.

We chose our honeymoon together and booked it through Deben Travel in Woodbridge. We chose a Mediterranean cruise and booked it for two weeks after our wedding. It was a family holiday with the twins, so it was not as relaxing and romantic as we would have liked, but it was amazing all the same and we visited some beautiful destinations in Spain and Portugal.

S

REAL WEDDINGS

am and Jen first laid eyes on each other in 2018. “I remember that day like it was yesterday,” says Jen. “We met at work, although I use the term ‘met’ loosely because, at first, she seemed to have no idea that I existed. I walked into the office kitchen and there she was, sitting at the table, engrossed in a book. Sam was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen and I couldn’t help but feel an instant connection, even though we hadn’t exchanged a word. Desperate to talk to her, I offered to make her a drink, trying to break the ice. But she didn’t even look up from her book; she simply ignored me. Undeterred, I took a seat nearby and attempted to engage her in conversation, but my efforts fell on deaf ears. It was as though she was in a world of her own. Time seemed to stand still as I sat there, trying to catch her attention. I eventually left and went back to work and when I returned for lunch, Sam had left the room without acknowledging my presence. I looked at the seat that was now empty, feeling a sense of disappointment that I couldn’t shake. Over the next eight months, I found myself actively searching for Sam in the establishment we work in. There are several different departments and her type of role means she could have been stationed anywhere. I couldn’t let this connection slip away. I replayed that first encounter in my mind countless times and it fueled my determination to find her again. Then, one day, nine months after that initial encounter, it happened. I spotted her from across the yard and my heart skipped a beat. I smiled at her, waved, and, to my surprise, she waved back. My heart raced as I approached her, asking for a quiet word. With a newfound sense of confidence, I handed her a slip of paper with my number on it. Sam’s curious eyes met mine and I could feel a connection between us that went beyond words. In that moment, I knew I was falling in love with her.” Jen was shocked when Sam popped the question. “In April 2020, Sam and I found ourselves in the midst of the coronavirus lockdown,” shares Jen. “Sam gently suggested that I go for a walk to clear my mind, assuring me that dinner would be ready upon my return. Little did I know that the evening would turn into an unforgettable moment. When I walked into the dining room after my stroll, I was greeted by a room adorned with flickering candles and soft, soothing music playing in the background. Sam had prepared a delectable meal of pesto and puff pastry chicken with vegetables and she had even included my favourite wine to make the evening special. We sat down together, talked and laughed. Then, as the delicious dinner came to an end, Sam surprised me in the most beautiful way. She bent down to the far side of the table and then returned with a small box. She quickly got on one knee and inside the box was the most exquisite tulip ring (our flower). I looked at her as she asked: “Will you marry me?” I was utterly taken aback by this unexpected proposal, but without hesitation, I exclaimed, “Yes!” It was a perfect moment, an oasis of joy and love in the midst of a pandemic.”

SETTING THE SCENE “One sunny afternoon, Sam and I were discussing where to get married,” recalls Jen. “I wanted a place with lots of glass and it needs to be next to the water. Sam knew just the place, so that evening, we decided to stop by The Boathouse, a charming waterfront restaurant known for its stunning views. We ordered a drink and sat by the window, enjoying the peaceful ambiance. Once the restrictions allowed it, we made an appointment to visit The Boathouse as our potential wedding venue. To our amazement, we found out that it was well within our budget, but the icing on the cake was the bonus that I had always dreamed of: arriving at the venue by boat. The Boathouse had its own dock, allowing me to make a grand entrance by water, fulfilling my wedding fantasy. Belinda Minors, the wedding organiser and venue owner, was incredible. Sam and I did not have to think about anything. She was flexible, attentive and even fluffed our dresses as we walked down the aisle. She wanted our dream to be a reality and it would not have been possible without her. “Our wedding day was three years of careful planning,” continues Jen. “We had the luxury of time to envision and shape every aspect of our celebration, creating an event that truly reflected our desires and personalities. When the day finally arrived, it was a manifestation of our shared dreams and aspirations. Our guests could feel the thought and intention behind every detail, from the meticulously chosen flowers to the personalised vows we exchanged. It was a day where our personalities and love story took centre 39

stage, surrounded by the beauty we had envisioned. Having had the time to focus on what we wanted and then making it a reality made our wedding day even more meaningful. It was a celebration of not just our love for each other but also our commitment to creating a life together that was truly our own.” For their favours, Sam and Jen made candles using dessert pots and a candle-making set. “We chose pink candles, burgundy ribbons and tags that said ‘let love glow’,” recalls Jen. “Closer to the wedding, Sam mentioned that she wanted to include Jordan almonds or bonbonnieres. Five almonds represent five wishes for the happy couple: health, wealth, fertility, happiness and longevity. As Sam is part Cypriot, this was an ode to her heritage. “The place names were my favourite part of the décor,” adds Jen. “I handwrote every guest a note from myself (Sam included) that acted as their place name. In a burgundy envelope with gold calligraphy writing on the front, there was a short note thanking them for coming and a personal message to each guest, either with a memory or kind words to say what they meant to me.” To create their flowers, Sam and Jen hired Wendy at Blush & Bloom Florals. “Wendy did an amazing job,” says Jen. “We each had a bouquet that was slightly different in style to show our personalities. Our best woman had a smaller version of ours, the best man and two men who walked us down the aisle had buttonholes and we chose corsages for our mothers. “Having dabbled in cake making during my college years, we decided to make our wedding cake,” continues Jen. “It was odd being knee deep in cake icing at 9:30am and, by 10am, going back upstairs to get ready! It was so worth the stress. Our cake topper was a resin and clay personalised figurine of Sam and I with our dog Cooper. We are big football fans, so we are both wearing our teams football tops over our dresses.”

REAL WEDDINGS

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore a beautiful Allure Bridal gown with a mocha underlay,” shares Jen. “I knew I wanted an A-line style and lace. I loved this dress because of the illusional back and soft shimmer. I saw it at a wedding fair and knew it was my dress. When I got to finally try it on, there was no doubt. I had my seamstress sew a piece of my dad’s old shirt into the inside of my dress next to my heart. This was an ode to my father and, in particular, to my nan Ivy, who passed away in 2004. She was my person and we shared a birthday. Sam wore a gown by Rosa Clara called Celia. It had short sleeves and a mermaid cut perfect for creating a feminine hourglass shape.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “It’s so cliché to say it was the best day of my life, but it was,” explains Jen. “There were two moments that caught me off guard. First, when I was at the top of the aisle and I saw Sam for the first time. It was like slow motion. We didn’t know what each other was wearing, so it was surprising to see her, but it took me right back to the first moment that I saw her in that kitchen. Secondly, it was when Sam made her speech. She doesn’t say much, but hearing her speak to our guests and hearing her point of view on our big day was wonderful. For Sam, writing her vows and hearing mine were a highlight. She was nervous, but as soon as she saw me and we were in the pagoda, the rest of the world melted away. She was also humbled by how many people came and by having Fred, her uncle, there. “We chose to do a private last dance to Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga, and it was one of my favourite moments of the whole day,” adds Jen. “It was arranged to give the team time to set up the sparkler exit, but it was so moving to have that moment for just us.” 41

aura and Danny met, like most modern couples, online. “We spoke by text for a few weeks before meeting for a drink,” says Laura. “We’ve been together ever since.” Danny popped the question on New Year’s Day at Chessington World of Adventures Resort. “We had just returned to our hotel room

and I sat on the bed as I was pregnant at the time and my feet were really sore,” shares the bride. “I looked up, and Danny was down on one knee with our son, Henry, on his lap, holding a ring box! I was so surprised. I said, ‘yes’ and we went for a lovely meal to celebrate.” Read on to see some of Laura’s favourite moments from their big day... 45

Clare Warren Calligraphy is a professional wedding calligrapher based in Attleborough. “I hand-write eye-catching on-the-day stationery for weddings around the world, but I especially love working with local couples,” says Clare. “It’s always exciting to plan the perfect signs and details around a venue that I know and I can work more closely with your other suppliers to create something truly special. “If you want to guide your guests around your venue, offer information about the day, or just keep everyone in their seats, calligraphy is a beautiful, personal way to do it. Nothing makes a guest feel more cared for than seeing their own name elegantly written by hand, so place cards often become some of the most treasured keepsakes. “Before calligraphy, I worked as a visual manager for an international department store, where I created award-winning displays that were admired by 10s of 1,000s of visitors. Over the last five years, I’ve used that eye for detail to help hundreds of couples with varying budgets and visions, from small intimate ceremonies to sprawling multi-day celebrations. air and make-up artist Stephanie Alexandra and photographer Hannah Betts worked together to create this stunning styled shoot. “We wanted to create an early autumn/late summer colour palette that works all year round,” says Hannah. “We wanted to come away from the classic style but showcase elegance, romance and effortless beauty through a simple yet somewhat extravagant look. Our vision for the flowers was to create a soft texture at differing heights. That softness was then the inspiration for the cake, the dress, the table décor and the overall look. We had a second look because we wanted to showcase how this colour palette could also work for a more sleek and elegant style. The soft, elegant, romantic, timeless and luxury elements were also incorporated into the signage, invites and chair tags. Butley Priory is a luxury venue and it’s clear why! It’s an old building, but there’s something soft and timeless about it. You will see from the photos how perfectly the cake blended in.”

EXPERT ADVICE

WEDDING WORRIES

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Our experts solve your problems

The best thing you could do is ask your photographer for help. Personally, I know that I prefer to work without a list (except for the family group shots), as I find that having a long list of requests throughout the day makes it very hard to be creative. I have a routine I like to follow and a list somewhat disrupts that, but that’s not to say that every photographer prefers working without a list! Your photographer is there to help you and will be happy to answer any questions that you might have. Zoë Gibbs www.zoegibbsphotography.co.uk

TREND SETTER What will be the top cake trends for 2024?

www.samanthajaynephoto.com

We’re clueless when it comes to photography. Is there a list of shots we should ask our photographer to capture?

PICTURE PERFECT

Two Magpies Bakery Group

The pressed-dried flower trend is here to stay. Summer weddings are still opting for delicate pressed flower designs, which give the wow factor in a very simple way. We have even started pressing flowers in our store, so we can colour match the flowers to the bride’s bouquet. As well as pressed flowers, the piped buttercream flowers are also a firm favourite and we expect this to carry on into 2024. What is lovely about this is that the piped flowers can reflect the season and the colours and flowers used in the decoration of the wedding itself. Whether you’re having a summer or autumn wedding, floral designs can be tailored to the colours of the season to suit the vibe of the wedding. Another trend that has been filling my Instagram page is Lambeth-style cakes! These look beautiful as a one-tier option if you’re having a small and intimate wedding, or as a showstopper three- or four-tier wedding cake to feed many. The Lambeth design is traditionally decorated in royal icing, which is a bit outdated for 2024, so it is now being executed in either buttercream or Italian meringue buttercream to give a silky-smooth finish to this simple but elegant cake design. Lydia Chipperfield www.twomagpiesbakery.co.uk

I’m worried about having our pictures taken on our wedding day, as we’re not the best posers. What would you suggest we do? Congratulations on your upcoming big day! It’s completely normal to feel a bit anxious about having your photograph taken, especially if you’re not comfortable in front of a camera. Here are some tips to help you feel more at ease and get beautiful photos: Choose a photographer you connect with: Look for someone whose style aligns with your preferences and discuss your concerns with them beforehand. A skilled photographer will know how to capture authentic and natural moments. Pre-wedding photo shoot: Consider having a pre-wedding photo shoot at your venue or a location of your choice. This will give you a chance to get comfortable with your photographer and practice some poses and prompts. It also allows the photographer to understand your personalities and preferences better. Share your concerns: Communicate openly with your photographer about your worries. Let them know if you have specific angles or poses you’re uncomfortable with and discuss any insecurities you may have. A good photographer will appreciate your honesty and work with you to ensure you feel relaxed. Natural interaction: If you choose the right photographer, they will understand your concerns and focus on natural interactions. Walk hand in hand, share a laugh, or have a quiet moment together. As a photographer, we have plenty of prompts that will enable us to capture these genuine moments without making you feel overly posed. Remember, the most important thing is to enjoy your wedding day. Trust your photographer, be yourselves and focus on the love and joy of the moment. The right photographer will be able to capture the essence of your special day without making you feel uncomfortable. Samantha Clarke www.samanthajaynephoto.com 61

LIFE OF THE PARTY We’d like our photos to be timeless with a few fun extras. What’s set to be the next big trend in the world of wedding photography?

Why not opt for a Lambeth/Barbie-effect cake? Dive into a world where every colour and hue transforms your bake into a masterpiece. Elevate the excitement with accent fruits, and let frills, coils, and piping embellishments create a visual feast on your cake table. It’s not just a treat; it’s a celebration of decadence and creativity!

Weddings are becoming more relaxed and informal, with a focus on celebrating your day your way. Most weddings are photographed in a documentary style, capturing key and natural moments discretely while also getting involved in all the fun. I love to capture movement, laughter and fun moments. This is where you really shine. New trends such as proposal photos, unplugged weddings, first-look photos and even day-after photos are seeing a rise in popularity. While influences such as TikTok and social media hashtags are creating a new creative platform for couples. At the end of the day, it’s all about what you love. Have the confidence to find your style and make it work. You’ll always be able to find a photographer who will love to celebrate your style with you.

CAKE EXPECTATIONS My wife-to-be and I are looking for a fun cake that will get our guests talking. Do you have any suggestions?

DELECTABLE DELIGHTS How can we create an impressive cake for our wedding without it costing the earth?

There are a couple of ways that we can create impressive cakes while also managing a tight budget. Firstly, we can use dummy tiers instead of cake to create a larger design without having lots of leftovers. These dummies are iced in the same fashion as the real cake and decorated to match. Obviously, the larger you go, the more decoration you require, and therefore it can incur additional costs. Secondly, use stands and clear acrylic tiers to increase the height and presence of your design. We use hoop stands to help increase the size of the overall design. This works especially well for small bakes. Or you can fill the clear acrylic tiers with flowers, foliage and tiny lights and use them as the base tier of your cake or as another stand to increase the height. The best option is to be honest with your designer about your budget and what you want from your design, and I’m sure that between you, you can create a fantastic cake that will wow your guests. Terri Newman www.erivicacakes.com 62

STEP INTO SPRING What menu would you suggest for a spring wedding? When choosing your menu, think about what’s in season. Spring is particularly nice for the freshness of new-grown foods like asparagus, heritage tomatoes, fresh carrots and strawberries. Salads should be on the menu as spring is all about lighter, more flavourful options paired with an abundance of seasonal fish and crab. Not forgetting the spring lamb, which is sweet as butter and is a classic spring food. It’s a change from the months of chicken and steak and works well with the addition of the light flavours from the new crop of vegetables. Keep your desserts flavourful and light with citrus vanilla rhubarb strawberries and lemon classic tarts, panacottas, or brûlées dressed with a light shortbread or poached berries. STYLED SHOOT

M

atthew Dawson from Swynford Manor put together this summer-themed shoot with the help of some talented local suppliers. “Our main dining room is called the Garden Room, so we decided to bring the garden and trees inside,” says Matthew. “We felt the olive trees worked with our high ceilings and large glass windows. We chose golden charger plates and glassware to keep the set-up classy and luxurious. The main and new addition for this shoot was the Lady Augusta Pavilion for outdoor ceremonies. This is our second outdoor licensed ceremony area and can hold up to 150 guests. We decorated it with olive trees lining the aisle and large floral urns.” 65

Q&A

Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best

LUSCIOUS LOCKS My hair is suffering from breakage due to heat damage and I’d love to get my healthy locks back. What would you suggest I do? Firstly, remove any split ends where possible. Nothing will repair a split end, so have as much trimmed off as you can and this will help to eliminate any further breakage. Look at getting a bond-building treatment, such as Olaplex, to help strengthen your hair. This could be done in a salon, but there’s also some great at-home treatments too. Invest in a good-quality heat protector. There are hundreds of products on the market, from sprays and oils to creams, so there will be something suitable for your hair type and they really do work! Finally, check your heat settings on your tongs or straighteners. Around 180 to 200 degrees is more than sufficient for most hair types, so try turning the temperature down a notch to see if that helps. Stacie Goodwin www.staciegoodwin.co.uk

SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND What jewellery do you expect to be popular in 2024?

SELF LOVE How can I ensure I’m relaxed in the run-up to my wedding? As we enter the final stages of winter, it’s the perfect time to prioritise self-care and commit to resolutions that can enhance both our beauty and overall wellbeing. One fantastic way to kickstart this journey is by incorporating regular spa visits and massages into your routine. Whether you opt for a deep tissue massage to release tension or a relaxing Swedish massage for overall rejuvenation, regular sessions can improve circulation, reduce muscle soreness and promote a sense of calm. When it comes to skincare, there are so many incredible products available that you could easily use a different set of products every day! However, research shows that a consistent, regular skincare regime is best for your skin. At the Bedford Lodge Hotel, we offer personalised skincare consultations to help you understand your skin’s unique needs. Following a consistent skincare routine and incorporating high-quality products and, if you can, regular treatments will keep your skin radiant and healthy. Cultivate mindfulness in your beauty routine. Choose products and treatments that are not only effective but also contribute to your overall sense of well-being. Opt for products that prioritise natural ingredients, ensuring that your beauty rituals are not only beneficial for your skin but also for your peace of mind! Now is a great time to expand your definition of beauty beyond skincare and cosmetics. Consider holistic treatments that focus on both mental and physical wellbeing and will leave you feeling blissfully relaxed and liberated. Kate Lake – Spa manager at Bedford Lodge Hotel www.bedfordlodgehotelspa.co.uk 82

Here are some jewellery trends we think will shine in 2024: From bold, statement pieces that demand attention to delicate, minimalist creations, 2024 is set to showcase a diverse range of trends. Diamonds remain a fashion favourite; whether you opt for natural or lab-grown, diamonds are always worth the investment. Oval-cut diamonds are expected to be in high demand in 2024. We also expect to see a rise in jewellery that features multiple diamonds in different shapes, like our Diamond Halo Pendant (pictured). Pearls are another popular jewellery staple for 2024; there has been a 66 per cent increase in searches for pearl jewellery over the last month. Specifically, more traditional styles like classic pearl necklaces or simple stud earrings. Big, beautiful silver jewellery had a major moment and we expect to see more heavy metal popping up in the months ahead, especially a chunky pair of earrings that can top off any look. Last year’s colourful jewellery is expected to continue, featuring coloured diamonds, gems, two-tone, or contrasting colours. We have witnessed a surge in warm tones, specifically topaz, rubies, deep amethyst, mandarin garnets, spessartite garnets and citrines. You can layer or stack pieces with different metals to create colour blocking. The team at Bradley Hatch Jewellers www.bradleyhatch.com

A song of sun AND SEA

County Wedding Magazines’ editor Melissa Cullen reveals why Dubrovnik is the perfect honeymoon destination

W

hilst I sit here in mid-October wrapped up in a blanket, jumper, and thermal socks, my mind can’t help but wander back to earlier in the year when I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Dubrovnik, a city in southern Croatia. Ideal for those of you who are looking for a city break and a beach-side destination, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination with everything you need for the perfect honeymoon.

ARRIVE IN STYLE My Dubrovnik adventure began bright and early in the morning when I was whisked away to the airport by a private taxi from Jayride. My driver arrived ahead of schedule, picking me up in a luxury vehicle; his friendly demeanour made the journey fly by and, before I knew it, we’d arrived at our destination London Gatwick Airport. A pleasant three-hour flight later, via easyJet, I’d arrived in Croatia ready to begin my adventure in earnest. I couldn’t wait to visit the filming locations for Game of Thrones, having been an avid fan of the TV series for years, and to see what other delights the city had to offer.

A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD A brief drive from the airport and I’d arrived at my accommodation, Valamar Tirena Hotel. Perfectly situated near the beach and the Old Town, the four-star resort has everything I look for in a holiday: culture, friendly staff and luxurious rooms. There are over 208 bedrooms to choose from, many with seaside views, and I was pleased to find mine had a king-sized bed, impressive views and a walk-in rainfall shower – I could have happily spent most of my trip just in the bedroom.

you also have access to the venue’s sister hotels, home to delicious restaurants and my favourite area, the Balance Mediterranean Spa by Valamar. Located inside the Valamar Lacroma Dubrovnik Hotel, the spa had all the luxuries you’d expect, such as a steam bath, saunas, a Vitality bar, a relaxation lounge and both indoor and outdoor pools. I spent most of my time by the indoor pool, surrounded by spacious loungers, I loved curling up with a good book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Losing track of time, I’d almost drifted off to sleep when the lovely masseuse came to collect me for my massage. I’ve suffered from neck ache for years, probably due to having a desk job, so I always jump at the chance to have a treatment. Feeling my worries (and knots!) drift away, the masseuse did a wonderful job and 35-minutes later I felt like a new person.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD Amongst my friends and family, it’s no secret that I’m a fussy eater, and I often feel overwhelmed when eating at a restaurant; so, I was a bit apprehensive when I arrived for lunch at Oliva Grill, the hotel’s à la carte restaurant by the pool. In hindsight, I feel silly as the menu had so many mouth-watering options that I wanted to try them all. I opted for the carbonara pasta, which was delicious, and I couldn’t wait to come back another day to try the tuna steak that I saw several other diners enjoying profusely. For dinner, the Valamar Tirena’s buffet restaurant is a must-try. I love a buffet, but it’s hard to know when to stop, and that was the exact problem I found myself having each evening. Everything looked so appetising that I had to try it all. Naturally, I also found space for a dessert…or two.

REST AND RELAXATION

FUN IN THE SUN

One of the best things about staying at the Valamar Tirena Hotel is that

Before arriving in Croatia, one of the things I was most excited about was

88

HONEYMOON

Dubrovnik’s largest play area – Maro World. Ideal for all age groups, it has everything from interactive games, trampolines, and softplay zones to gaming lounges filled with all the latest tech. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop wandering around the 13 different play areas and was very tempted to take my shoes off and try the slides out for myself. With highly trained staff on-site, you can relax knowing your children are taken care of while you enjoy some me-time by the pool, or treat yourself to a spa treatment. Or if you’re a big kid like me, you can even join in with the fun and challenge your kids to a whole host of games and activities. I couldn’t wait to tell my nephews all about Maro World and I have promised to bring them for a visit soon.

A SEA OF DREAMS After spoiling my inner child, it was time to venture out and explore Dubrovnik and what better way than by boat? The marina was a short drive away, and before I knew it, I was on a private vessel heading around the Elaphiti Islands. These magnificent islands are a wonder to behold and as with many stunning locations, the pictures don’t quite do them justice. Jetting around the islands, our boat’s captain chose the perfect spot to drop anchor, giving us an opportunity to swim with the many fish that call the Adriatic Sea home. Diving near the awe-inspiring reefs and caves is a must for anyone visiting the area and is one of the many highlights of my trip.

HISTORIC WONDERS Old Town is an essential destination for anyone visiting Dubrovnik, but the best way to travel, in my humble opinion, is by electric tuk tuk. I wasn’t sure what to expect when the vehicle arrived at our hotel, but before I knew it, we were careering through the streets and mountains of Croatia. Our kind driver even stopped at Dubrovnik Bridge to give the group a moment to snap some pictures and stand in awe of the impressive architecture. With the wind in my hair and the sun beating down on me, I found myself wishing to live in that moment forever. Old Town was everything that I had imagined it to be, with streets steeped in a rich history, I could imagine various Game of Thrones characters scheming around every corner! Our guide told us about Croatia’s past, showing us the beautiful buildings and

introducing the group to friendly locals and what I’d been waiting for: Fort Lovrijenac (AKA King’s Landing!). I must have taken a hundred pictures of Old Town, but looking back, I don’t feel any of them really came close to capturing its beauty; it’s truly a location that needs to be seen to be believed. Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were escorted to a cable car, which elevated us up to Srđ Mountain. Providing impressive views of Old Town and the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea, the sights were breathtaking. Situated at the top of the 415-metre-high mountain was Panorama Restaurant. A highly desired location, the restaurant not only has the views in its favour, but the food and drink were also spectacular. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have visited this picturesque setting, and I would highly recommend the location to anyone thinking of visiting Dubrovnik.

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY For the evening’s entertainment, I was treated to a performance of a musical rendition of Around the World in Eighty Days, written by Jules Verne and performed at Lovrijenac Fort in the Old Town. Having never read the book and knowing a little about the plot, I was excited and interested to see how the story had been translated into a musical. Commissioned especially for the Dubrovnik audience, the play was full of slapstick comedy, catchy tunes and fabulous acting; it was a joy to watch and the perfect way to finish my last day. Lovrijenac Fort hosts a variety of shows throughout the year, so be sure to check out what’s showing when you visit. A short taxi trip back to the hotel, and a couple of drinks later, it was time to hit the sheets. I awoke the next morning dreading checking out. I wanted to spend longer in my little piece of paradise and was heartbroken to be leaving. I’m looking forward to returning with my husband and showing him just how wonderful this city truly is.
