teve and Karie Emery knew they wanted to teach their four sons about entrepreneurship and when an opportunity presented itself, the lesson began. In 2008, the couple purchased what was then known as the Tastee Freeze on U.S. Route 50 west of Hillsboro and changed the name to S&K Dairy Cup. Keeping the same building and the well-received puttputt course, the Emery's wanted a place where families could come and enjoy time together. Karie said S&K offers a "very diverse food menu and we're famous for our homemade onion rings."

S&K Dairy Cup: continued from Page 1 "We also offer homemade cole slaw, funnel fries, a club house burger (cheeseburger with slaw), texas tenderloin, mushrooms, breaded broccoli, taco salad, chicken salad, cheese taters — just to name a few of our items," she said. Menu prices vary depending on what customers order, but the price for heading out on the green is consistent: $5 per person and $30 for a season pass. "We offer birthday party deals and group discounts," Karie said. The putt-putt course and dairy cup are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days per week and is located in the small community of Hoagland. Karie, the daughter of Dave and Judy Hamilton, said she and her husband were born and raised in Highland County graduating from Lynchburg-Clay High School and Whiteoak High School, respectively. The

OX-EYE DAISIES Gardeners at the Ohio Veterans Home of Georgetown at 10 a.m. rain or shine. As I pushed my hand cart up the sidewalk loaded with bagged mulch, I was greeted by at least 10 excited gardeners ready to dig in the dirt! We had weeds to pull, ground to hoe, 36 tomato plants to stick in the dirt, and 12 bags of mulch to spread. We visited as we worked and swapped stories about the biggest tomato or tallest sunflower. Time flies when you’re having fun and we almost worked through lunch! Here is a quick up-date on the Veteran Gardeners: Paul Mitchell has green tomatoes; Art Puckett’s potatoes are blooming and his green beans are coming on strong; Randall Patton’s sunflowers are growing by leaps and bounds; Dave Heisler has his tomatoes planted; Jean Reynolds has flowers, peppers and a tomato plant; Tony Figliola has tomatoes, peppers and herbs planted and mulched; and Fred Panetta has tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and a few more things in the ground. I will try to report more next month about the other veteran Gardeners, but this month I was too

Kyler is a fifth-grader at Bright Elementary and Carson is a second-grader at Bright Elementary," Karie said. Steve graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in agronomy and works for Crop Production Services. He is the son of Chuck and Linda Emery and while working for CPS, Steve's father manages S&K Dairy Cup. Karie graduated from Wright State University with a Bachelor of Art in English and a master's degree in special education. She also works apart from the dairy cup as a career specialist for Great Oaks at the Laurel Oaks campus. "I do the recruiting and marketing for the campus. I work closely with schools in Highland, Clinton, and

busy to take notes or photographs! Every month I leave the Ohio Veterans Home smiling and chock-full of stories to share about this great group of gardeners. All my tomatoes are planted, the zucchini is up, the cucumber and pepper plants are finally over the shock of transplanting and this year I am trying my hand at growing celery. I’m sure that I will have stories to tell about this adventure. I also planted some cotton seeds today. Visitors to my garden are always amazed to see the puffs of cotton on the plants at the end of summer. Strawberry Freezer Jam is on my “to do list” for next week – a good rainy day project. As my dad said, “That jam will taste great when the snow is flying!” Enjoy digging in the dirt this week! ——— Submitted by Faye Mahaffey, OSUE Brown County Master Gardener Volunteer.

Fayette counties," she said. When not working, Karie said she and Steve enjoy watching their sons play sports and traveling as a family during the summer months. She said that growing up in Highland County has led them to think "it's a great place to raise our family." "The network of people in this area is tremendous and we truly feel that people want to support local business and activities whenever possible," she said. "The store has been in business for more than 60 years. Highland County is a great place to live and work... We love this area and want to be here for our customers in the future." Karie said that it's because of those customers that S&K Dairy Cup continues to be open and "we thank them for their continued support of our business." She affected so many people that day, I hope those reading this letter will affect and influence many more. -- INDIANA READER DEAR INDIANA READER: Thank you for a sweet and uplifting letter. I'm sure it will stimulate others to consider how they, too, can help those who are less fortunate than themselves. DEAR ABBY: Because many women have stopped wearing pantyhose or stockings when they go out on a dinner date or formal function, would it be a fair turnaround for me to put on a three-piece suit and tie and not wear any socks? I'd appreciate your thoughts, please. -- SOCKLESS IN MICHIGAN DEAR SOCKLESS: Women who forgo pantyhose or stockings in hot weather usually do it because they're wearing strappy sandals or open-toed summer footwear. Hosiery doesn't look right with them. I have seen men -at least on the West Coast -wear T-shirts under their sport coats and go barefoot in their loafers. But I have never seen a man don a three-piece suit and tie and go sockless. (And I never hope to.) I don't recommend it. ——— Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Write Dear Abby at www.DearAbby.com or P.O. My trips to Georgetown this past week were filled with sightings of new “Road-side Blooms.” The Ox-Eye Daisies are particularly beautiful this year. My favorite wildflower reference book, “Wildflowers of Ohio,” cites these facts about Chrysanthemum leucanthemum: Family: Aster; Height: 13 feet; Flower: common white-andyellow flower head 1-2 inches wide, with up to 20 petals (ray flowers) surrounding a yellow center of disk flowers; Leaf: thick, dark green, irregularly toothed, clasping basal leaves, up to 6 inches long; stem leaves, 1-2 inches long, similar to basal leaves, but smaller; Bloom: spring, summer; Cycle/Origin: perennial, non-native; Habitat: wet or dry, sun fields, along roads, pastures; and Range: throughout. Author Stan Tekiela also shares some interesting facts about the OxEye Daisy. Also called Common Daisy, the Ox-Eye Daisy is a European import often seen growing in patches along roads. In poor soil it grows short and erect; in rich soils it grows tall, and its weak stem causes it to fall over and spread out across the ground. OxEye Daisy contains pyrethrum, a chemical that repels insects and is used in organic pesticides. This nice garden plant is often overlooked and has a very interesting composite of many flowers appearing as one large flower. Each white petal is a separate flower, while the center yellow portion is many individual disk flowers. The Northern Catalpa trees are bursting with blooms. This tree has somewhat of a messy reputation. My husband always comments, “Those trees are pretty on someone else’s property, don’t you think?” I guess the long bean-like fruit that turns brown when mature is the main reason he is opposed to planting this tree. The large and showy orchid-like flowers range from cream to white with yellow and purple spots and stripes and attract many insects. Catalpa tree leaves are among the largest leaves in the state. This is a non-native tree that has been successfully planted along streets and boulevards in just about every city in Ohio. “Catalpa” is an American Indian name for this tree, but it is also called Catawba, Cigar Tree or Indian Bean, which all refer to its large seedpods (fruit). The third Tuesday of each month Brown County Master Gardener Volunteers meet with the Veteran

DEAR ABBY: From time to time you print letters about acts of kindness, and I'd like to relate one I witnessed: I was working as a cashier in a grocery store. An elderly woman came through my line with about 10 items in her basket, including some strawberries and shortcakes. Making small talk, I commented on how nice the berries looked. She agreed, and informed me that they were a little treat for herself. She said she didn't have much on her late husband's pension. When I told her the total, her face fell and she asked me to take the strawberries and shortcakes off because she couldn't afford them. I was sad and embarrassed for her. I thought about buying them myself, but had no cash on me and wasn't sure if it might violate a store policy. She paid for the remainder of her items and went outside to rest on a bench before walking home. I began scanning the next customer's items while trying to put out of my mind the sadness I felt at the lady's disappointment. My customer asked me why the lady hadn't taken her strawberries. I explained and continued totaling the woman's sale. The woman then told me to include the strawberries -not for herself, but for the lady outside. She wanted no praise or thanks and asked me to give them to the lady. I took them to the lady on the bench and explained that the woman in line behind her had purchased them for her. She looked down at the strawberries, tucked them into her bag and began to cry, murmuring about the kindness of strangers. I went back inside and had to explain to the next 15 minutes' worth of customers in my line why I was crying. The woman who bought the strawberries never saw how grateful the lady was, nor how touched I was, or my coworkers and other customers were -- not only by her kindness, but her humility in mak-

BULK FOOD IS OUR SPECIALTY SO ARE GREAT PRICES!

The future of dentistry has actually been available for some time, in the form of an advanced laser instrument that can be used in place of a drill to perform a variety of dental procedures. Waterlase® Dentistry features a handheld instrument that combines a spray of atomized water with laser energy to conduct procedures ranging from tooth decay removal and enamel etching to gum reduction, without the heat, pressure, vibration, or pain often associated with a dental drill. As a result of the remarkable degree of precision and comfort afforded by this advanced laser technology, patients often can forego the need for local anesthetic. Waterlase® Dentistry represents a large step forward in cavity preparation, root canal treatment, smile design, and other procedures. EUGENIA LAST the Last Word in

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, MAY 28, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Carey Mulligan, 27; Kylie Minogue, 44; Christa Miller, 48; Gladys Knight, 68. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: You must concentrate first and foremost on your personal financial situation and the agreements you have with others. You can position yourself well if you are detailed and precise about your desires and expectations. Discipline must be implemented, as nothing can be left to chance or undone. Your numbers are 6, 9, 20, 27, 36, 41, 43. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Apply pressure if it will help you get things moving. Show leadership, doing whatever it takes to offset mishaps before they begin. Coming up with a quick solution that saves the day will be your forte. Utilize your skills and enjoy victory. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Don't question your abilities. Take the initiative and figure out what will work best for you. Be vocal about your feelings and what you would like to see happen, but be sure to understand everyone else's needs as well. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Think with your head, not your heart. Indecisiveness will make you seem weak. Be a powerhouse, not a pushover. Don't let changes others make throw you off guard or alter your plans. Arguing will be a waste of time. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Observation will be your guide. Don't expect everyone to be open or honest with you. Ask questions and listen carefully to the information divulged. A trip will uncover interesting facts. Use your imagination, but don't act on assumptions. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You may feel exuberant, but before engaging in something new, consider how feasible your plans are. Excess will lead to loss. Get promises in writing before you commit to anything with the potential to leave you broke or looking incompetent. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You'll have mixed emotions regarding your future. Don't let someone's embellishment lead you astray. Believe in your abilities and invest in your attributes and skills. Changes at home may not be welcome, but they will prove beneficial. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Love, travel and adventure should be where you put your time and energy. You will make new friends and partners who have the potential to compliment you personally or professionally. Attend a conference or event that can help you advance. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Focus on money, contracts or legal settlements that must be resolved. Don't trust anyone to do the work for you. Go over details carefully, listen to your intuition and be diligent about your path rather than following someone else's suggestion. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You can get your way by helping others and responding persuasively to what others do and say. Stick to the truth, act fast and don't leave room for error, or someone will complain or criticize you. Impatience will be your downfall. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Trying to resolve a personal problem will result in a change in your relationship. Be careful

how you treat others. It may affect a deal that can bring you high returns. Integrity will help you win in the end. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You can get a lot accomplished regarding personal papers and home and family responsibilities. Love is highlighted, and socializing with someone you adore will enhance your relationship. Don't let insecurity be your downfall.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Double-check that you are getting valid information before you share it with others. Upset and anger will develop if you make changes without the approval of someone your decisions will affect. Think before you act. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are a communicator with great ideas. You are aggressive and productive.
