pon entering the vestibule, before even fully entering the shop, herbaceous scents abound at Paula Mitchell's Whole Body Center at 134 S. High Street in Hillsboro. Once entering the shop earthy scents and soft music greet the senses. Mitchell says she has been at this location since 1987. Since taking the business over, it used to be located on Main Street, it has "evolved" into what it is today, she said. Amid the healthful items for sale, a dimly-lit room is visible through a doorway in the back of the shop. Offered here are the services of massage therapist, Lisa Keys,

HOW TO PREPARE NEW LANDSCAPE BEDS

There’s a seven-step process to prepare new landscape beds. Planting is the sixth step. Planting isn’t just about “digging a hole” and stuffing the plant into it. Making new garden beds is a sevenstep process. You need to get rid of existing grass and weeds, loosen the soil, and make sure there’s enough food for the plants you’re installing, and protect against weeds taking over before your new plants can succeed. Before you buy new plants, be patient and prepare your garden beds properly. Compacted soil is the biggest reason plants fail to thrive. You need to make the soil you’re planting in as close as possible to the rich, welldrained container mix the plant was grown in. Plants breathe through their roots, so air is the most beneficial ingredient in good garden soil. There’s nothing you can add afterward that will help plants breathe. Another enemy is weeds, particularly established perennial weeds. Stripping the sod off the top just removes the best topsoil you have and leaves deep-rooted weeds like thistle. Tilling in live weeds just makes more, healthier weeds. Instead, kill them completely with Remuda or Roundup. Wait until they’re dead straw; now their foliage will actually improve your soil when you till them in. Your soil is probably lacking in

trace minerals, beneficial microbes and nutrients. Building them in from the beginning works much better than adding them later. We use old-fashioned meal-based fertilizers like Plant Tone, which have slow-release plant food so they won’t burn tender new roots. Peat moss adds organic matter to the soil to keep it from sticking together. It also mixes in lots of air, which is beneficial to plants. Tilling with peat moss is like making a soufflé or whipping up whipped cream; by adding air you increase the volume. We call this “making fluffy dirt.” It helps plants build healthy root systems quickly. It’s magic. Here are the seven steps: 1. Outline your new bed and dig a three-inch deep trench around it, one shovel wide. 2. Kill the existing weeds and grasses. Spray them with Remuda or Roundup and wait a week or two until they’re completely brown. You may need a specialized weed killer for nutgrass, ground ivy, clover, wild violets or other, tougher weeds. If your first spray doesn’t kill everything, spray again and wait. 3. Scatter “Plant Tone” fertilizer on the ground, four pounds per 100 square feet.

4. Spread three inches of peat moss and then deep-till the whole area until you have fluffy topsoil six to eight inches deep. 5. Rake the soil away from the edges, making a “gutter” along the edges so your mulch can be evenly thick, and mounding up where the largest plants will go. 6. Do all your planting while the soil is nice and dry and fluffy, trying not to pack it down. 7. Mulch right away so weed seeds don’t get the sunlight they need to germinate. Do your cleanup before you mulch, so soil and mulch don’t get mixed. Following this step-by-step process will save you time, effort and money in the long run, and eliminate the frustration you feel when your new landscape projects don’t thrive. If you’re realistic about the time it will take, and do it right the first time, your landscaping will look better and take less time to maintain. ——— Steve Boehme is the owner of GoodSeed Nursery & Landscape, located on Old State Route 32 three miles west of Peebles. Memories of childhood abuse are haunting young mother DEAR ABBY: I'm a 25year-old, happily married woman with a great life. Ever since the birth of my son a little over a year ago, I find myself angry at things that happened in my childhood that I thought I had "gotten over." Abby, I was mentally, physically and sexually abused by my father. He has never had to answer for his actions, which of course he denies. My mother was also emotionally and verbally abusive, as well as absent. I have a newfound anger toward her, and the hatred for my father has resurfaced. (I have had no contact with him for years.) How do I get over this? I had therapy as a kid and I'm looking for other options. -- HAVING FLASHBACKS IN MARION, OHIO DEAR HAVING FLASHBACKS: You may be looking for "other options," but more counseling may be the best option for you. Now that you're a mother yourself, with a daily reminder of how small and fragile a child is, it's not surprising you're angry at your parents for the way you were treated when you were little and helpless. A licensed psychotherapist can help you work this through in the shortest possible time, so please don't wait to ask for a referral. DEAR ABBY: Less than a year ago, my 28-year-old son, "David," married his college sweetheart, "Ann." She's a wonderful girl. They bought a home near her job in the Midwest. David sometimes goes out of state on temporary jobs. He called me a month ago, while on a job in a resort area, and told me he has met someone and wants out of his marriage. He said Ann has been great, they never argue, etc., but he was pressured into the marriage and doesn't really know where his life is going. Ann has called me several times in tears. She said she will give him time, but she is almost ready to give up. I am heartbroken. I think my son is making a terrible mistake, as Ann truly loves him and will do anything for him. I love her like a daughter. I have spoken to David and told him what I think, but I don't know what else to do. There is no good reason

Whole Body: continued from Page 1 every Tuesday. This is also where Mitchell teaches yoga classes once a week. She says she also teaches yoga, pilates, and Zumba at the YMCA and has for the past 12 years. A multitude of products to support a healthy lifestyle are within the Whole Body Center. Racks behind the counter carry yoga magazines, magazines devoted to well-being, cooking books, and numerous informational pamphlets. A bookshelf in the store also carries a variety of informational items. Mitchell carries natural supplements, herbal capsules and extracts, essential oils, a variety of natural body care items, vitamins, natural food items, diet aids, green foods, bulk dried herbs and teas, homeopathic products, ear candles, and the list goes on and on. She spoke of the abundance of products online and how quality is not always known in that context. Stressing the quality of the inventory of the store, Mitchell said she only carries "good quality brands." A rustic-looking shelf beside the counter holds locally-made soy wax candles and gemstone jewelry. Also offered at the store is honey, and other bee-associated products, from Higgins Apiary in Hillsboro. Eggs are

D EAR AB BY Abigail Van Buren for this breakup. How can I help him not to go ahead with this? -- VERY SAD MOM IN MARYLAND DEAR MOM: You can't prevent your son from leaving the marriage. However, you would do him and Ann a favor to suggest that when his business in the resort area is finished, they seek marriage counseling. David may want out because he met someone or, as he said, he didn't really want to be married in the first place. If there's an upside to this, it's that they didn't have children. While the situation is sad and you love your daughterin-law, do NOT allow yourself to be put in the middle or you will alienate your son. If the marriage doesn't work out, you can still have a relationship with her, although it won't be the one you planned on. DEAR ABBY: What's the difference, in your opinion, between gossip and news? I have a friend who loves telling me things about other friends. I think she does it in order to let me know that she knows something I don't know. Frankly, I think she's invading the privacy of others. She considers it "news." I consider it gossip. -- UNWILLING LISTENER IN PHOENIX DEAR UNWILLING: News is something that affects everyone. It's supposed to be fact-based. Gossip, on the other hand, a form of voyeurism, is often based on conjecture and its intent is titillation. ——— Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. among the local offerings as well. Mitchell said the store serves as a drop-off for Fair Ridge Farms, a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), as well as a pick-up point for its customers. Over the years she said she has gotten some regular clients and anyone that comes in is welcome to ask questions and talk to her about their needs. "I like the person to person contact . . . I really enjoy that interaction." If there is something someone wants, something not carried at the store, Mitchell said she is "happy to do special orders." According to Mitchell she grew up in Cincinnati and used to spend summers at her family's cottage at Rocky Fork Lake. Once she married-her husband is from Greenfield--she was in the area to stay, now living at the cottage at the lake full-time. Mitchell said she is a classically-trained dancer and in her youth this evolved into "wanting to be healthier and have more energy." She also credits a high school teacher from her youth for guidance in living a more healthy lifestyle. Mitchell said it is "rewarding" to be able to offer products and information that aid in "keeping everything in balance and harmony" and that are supportive of "whole body health."

Each year, dentists treat millions of cavities that result from the enamel-eating acids emitted by sugar-eating bacteria missed by flossing and brushing. While drilling out tooth decay and filling cavities with amalgam or composite fillings has proven extremely effective in preserving the remaining healthy tooth structure, patients often wish they could somehow magically eliminate any decay and simply regenerate the tooth back to its previous healthy state. That wish may someday be a reality because scientists have identified a peptide known as MSH (melanocyte-stimulating hormone) that encourages cells within decayed teeth to regenerate in about one month. When introduced into the teeth in a gel or film in the laboratory, cavities disappeared and were replaced by healthy tooth structure.

Outdoor adventures Even if you live in a big city, chances are you don’t have to go far to enjoy the fresh air and beauty of the outdoors. All around you are green spaces, parks, bike paths, creeks and rivers, and flower gardens, even if they’re in your neighbour’s front yard. Getting outdoors is essential for good mental health. It lifts our spirits and boosts our well-being. If you can get out to the countryside, you’ll be sure to recharge your batteries if you go for a walk or even a drive on a country path or road. Pack a tent and a sleeping bag, or pack up your travel trailer if you have one, and you’ll be able to prolong your enjoyment of the idyllic spots you’ll find. Depending on the geography, you can hike up a mountain or fish along a river or picnic in the woods. And there’s nothing to refresh the soul like lighting a campfire and enjoying marshmallows with the whole family. Many urban centres have conservation areas that are easily accessible. These are natural havens for flora and fauna and are places where you can quickly forget your own daily worries. Biking is another way to enjoy the great outdoors, on city bike paths or country roads. By venturing outside your municipality you may discover some picturesque areas that you were completely unaware of. You never know!

If staying in town is more practical for you, consult your town’s website or look in the local newspaper to find out about all the activities available close to home. You’ll be spoilt for choice between the municipal swimming pool, tennis or badminton lessons, sports associations, family activities, and organized festivities. Another wonderful possibility for spending an evening underneath the stars is to attend an outdoor concert. These musical events are often held in public parks during summer. Getting outdoors could even be as simple as doing some chores around the yard. If the weather cooperates you could clean up your deck or balcony, cut the grass, or wash the car. You see, you can’t really avoid outdoor living in the summertime! Who would want to?

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, JULY 30, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Hilary Swank, 38; Lisa Kudrow, 49; Laurence Fishburne, 51; Arnold Schwarzenegger, 65. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Engage in activities that allow you to work alongside creative individuals. Volunteer your services and you will instigate greater opportunities to utilize what you do best in unique ways. Love, romance and family planning should all be geared toward making your life more fulfilling and your goals more diverse. Your numbers are 5, 8, 23, 30, 32, 39, 46. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Take care of professional matters quickly and efficiently. Modesty and generosity will be key if you want to come out a winner and maintain your popularity. Gauge every move with the intent to secure your position. Love is in the stars. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Stabilize your personal situation. Do what's required before you are asked. Embrace the changes suggested and you will get far more in return. A practical and affectionate approach to life and loved ones will set good family values. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Help will be offered if you ask. Try a different approach. Networking, applying and interviewing for a higher position will all lead to a brighter future. Express your feelings. Your values will convince others to take a chance on you. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Take action. Dreaming can be a relaxing and fun thing to do, but if you let your imagination run wild you won't accomplish what needs to be done. Positive action and doing more than what's expected of you will bring stellar results. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Improve your financial situation. Stop being so generous. Call in old debts, pay off borrowed money and set up a budget that will help you stabilize your life. Moving, downsizing or cutting back will do wonders for future prospects. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Share your plans for the future with people who can assist you. Refuse to let someone interfere with your productivity. Insist that whomever you spend time with contributes to helping you reach your goal or stays out of your way. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Trouble will surface at home or when dealing with a partner. You have to be willing to compromise if you want to finish what you start. A careless act or mention of something will be misinterpreted. Don't divulge secret information. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Be leery of people who don't share your concerns. View different lifestyles, but refrain from impulsively altering your own. Discuss your plans with someone you respect and want to spend more time with. Avoid being burdened by someone unworthy. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): There is money to be made through partnerships, contracts and settlements. Don't rely on hearsay if you want to make the right decision. Get your facts straight first. Past acquaintances are likely to come back into your life. Romance is highlighted. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don't fold under emotional pressure. A wrong move will set you back and make you appear

weak. Stick to what you know and do best. Don't get angry if someone tries to dump added responsibility in your lap; politely decline and move on. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): A chance meeting with someone will make you rethink your past, present and future. Observation is your best bet. A premature move could be costly. Focus on home, family and personal finance. Budget wisely.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Stop waffling and realize your potential. Pick the people you want to include in your plans and discuss your ideas briefly. Someone you least expect will show jealousy. Before you have regrets, cut this person free and move on. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are intelligent, outgoing and versatile. You are accepting and resilient.
