ENCHANTED WOODS

Rick’s body shop: 41 years of service By ANGELA SHEPHERD Staff Writer

In the heat of the day, the shaded interior of the garage of Rick's Body Shop and Custom Painting provides a welcome reprieve from a toohot sun. To greet everyone who enters is Baron, a 13year-old German Shepherd and gift from Rick Wilkin's wife and daughters for a bygone Father's Day, trying to beat the heat himself as he sprawls on the cool concrete floor. Wilkin began doing body work when he was in high school, starting out at Lee Rhodes' (spelling unclear) shop in Fairview. From there, after graduating high school, Wilkin was hired by Rhodes at Matson Chevrolet in Hillsboro in 1965. Wilkin worked there until entering the Army the following year where he did a tour of duty in Vietnam. In 1968 Wilkin came back to Matson Chevrolet then he moved on to Hobart for a couple of years.

$50 Gift Card Winner!

Angela Shepherd/The Times-Gazette

David Sizemore is the latest winner of the "find the shopping bag" contest. She won a $50 gift card to Bear Arms. Look for another hidden bag in this week’s Shopper. Last week’s bag was found on page 7A. Please note that bags that are on a Highland County Shopper logo – ones on the front page and in sales representative’s ads, for example – do not count.

ENCHANTED WOODS IS A FANTASY GARDEN

The Faerie Cottage in Winterhur Gardens “Enchanted Woods” is one of the destinations on the Philadelphia Garden Tour. Regular readers of this column already know about our planned Philadelphia Garden Tour, and most people have heard of the tour centerpiece, Longwood Gardens. Fewer gardeners know about the nearby Winterthur Museum and Gardens in Wilmington, Delaware. Like Longwood, this fantastic estate was built by the DuPont family a century ago, but Winterthur couldn’t be more different from Longwood in its garden style. We first visited Winterthur to see its world-renowned collection of period furniture. The DuPont mansion is 275 rooms, each one uniquely decorated and filled with an amazing array of antique furnishings from around the world. More recently, the Campbell family’s collection of historic soup tureens was moved to Winterthur from the Campbell’s Soup headquarters in Camden, New Jersey. This exhibit is a tour de force of craftsmanship by mas-

ter ceramicists. potters and silversmiths from around the world. But it was the spectacular gardens at Winterthur that impressed us the most. Longwood Gardens is very formal and symmetrical, but Winterthur was landscaped to highlight the rolling countryside and the effect is subtle but dramatic. Plants are arranged to appear as if they grew spontaneously, planted in large drifts and grouped with other plants that harmonize in color and form. Paths are curving rather than straight, following the contours of the land, passing around trees, drawing walkers into the 60-acre garden surrounded by 1,000 acres of farmland. The most memorable part of Winterthur is the Enchanted Woods, sheltered by a grove of huge oaks. Designed to entertain children, this 3acre garden features a cutaway “Faerie Cottage” made of stone, with a thatched roof and miniature furniture, and a huge bird’s nest made of sticks

and vines. An old gate plays a tune as you open it, and huge toadstools emit clouds of vapor for an eerie effect. You are invited to tour with us this September, on our Philadelphia Garden Tour with Croswell Tours. We’re visiting Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, and the Wyeth museum and gardens at Brandywine. We’ll depart GoodSeed Farm on Sept. 13 for four days and three nights of terrific food, great gardens and museums. Get the details on the “Bus Tours” page our website at this link, or you can call or e-mail for more information: http://www.goodseedfarm.com/public/index.cfm?fuseaction=articles.list&ArticleInstanceID =938. Editor’s Note: Steve Boehme is the owner of GoodSeed Nursery & Landscape, located on Old State Route 32 three miles west of Peebles. Customers are offended when asked to take phones outside DEAR ABBY: This is my first-ever Dear Abby letter. I am disgusted by the lack of manners shown by cellphone users. I run an antique store in a small tourist town. I cannot tell you how many "insulted and incensed" customers I have asked to please leave my shop because they insisted on talking on their cellphones. I have also asked people in church to carry on their conversations outside. A man at my daughter's high school graduation got a call and proceeded to talk on and on until I finally asked him to leave. This has happened in restaurants, movies -even a Broadway play. It's inconceivable to me that cellphone users are unwilling or unable to understand that their VIP conversations are an intrusion and rude to those who are forced to listen. -- PEEVED IN NANTUCKET, MASS.

Rick’s continued from Page 1 While at Hobart Wilkin said he was doing body work "on the side," eventually deciding to give starting his own business "a whirl." Wilkin said he rented a shop in Fairview before having the current building built in 1974. The location at 2955 US Highway 50 in Allensburg is where he has been ever since. Wilkin is the only one working at the shop but he said if he ever needs help with something he has got some people to call. As far as services, Wilkin said he can do "everything that has to be done to restore a vehicle" that has been damaged to its original condition, everything from frames to body work to painting. Upon walking through the shop, past the old 1950ssomething coupe up on a rack, the cement floor begins to take on a Jackson Pollock feel as the paint droppings become more dense leading to the paint booth located at the back of the shop. Here is where Wilkin performs his custom painting, all geared up in a suit and mask and closed in the booth with big ventilation vents on the back wall. As to custom painting, Wilkin said he has painted

several race cars in and around the area. Wilkin said when he started the business the custom painting was a big interest for him and he explained the intricacies of the custom paints, the aspects of a particular base coat and the various overlays that create the "depth" of the very large variety of custom paints available, as evidenced by the many sample books laid across his desk. Wilkin built and painted his own race car as well. It is painted black and bears a sheriff's star and within that star it reads, "Sheriffs for Kids Racing." The car also has the blue and red lights on the roof. "This car has been from New Jersey to Las Vegas," Wilkin said as he spoke of the many places he has traveled with the car for various events and races. It is something that has made the local rounds too as Wilkin said he takes the car to D.A.R.E. events and to elementary, high, and vocational schools in the surrounding counties. Wilkin is married to Shirley (Hook) and has two daughters, Tanya Hendrix and Kelly Wilkin. He was born in Hillsboro and raised in Allensburg. Rick's Body Shop is located at 2955 U.S. Route 50 in Allensburg and can be reached by calling 937-3642371.

EAT BETTER, AGE BETTER While seniors generally consume fewer calories because of their slowing metabolisms, they must be sure to get sufficient calories to sustain their health. Weight loss at an advanced age for whatever reason may lead to malnutrition and/or worsening of existing health conditions. With this in mind, seniors should make sure their teeth (or dentures) and gums are in good working order. If it hurts to chew, people eat less. Healthy teeth and properly fitting dentures ensure that seniors can avail themselves of all the nutrition in healthy meals. The National Institutes of Health is funding research to determine how oral health may affect memory. It is thought that a healthy diet may be linked with less cognitive decline among seniors.

Our entire staff at CLARK FAMILY DENTISTRY encourages your questions about comprehensive dental care. We supply superior oral health care for the entire family. For answers to your oral health issue questions we invite you to call our office at 937.393.3494. Your health is our first priority. We are pleased to provide you with state-of-the-art dental care at 624 S. High Street, Hillsboro. Our goal is to make each visit to our office a comfortable and positive experience. New patients are always welcome. P.S. Oral health should be viewed in an overall context because it is an important component that contributes to the health of other bodily systems and organs. 2293082

PUBLIC RELEASE Bright Local School District today announced its 2012-2013 program year policy for free and reduced priced meals for students unable to pay the full price of meals or milk served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast, After School Care Snack or Special Milk Program. Each school office and the central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party. The Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines will be used for determining eligibility. Children from families whose annual income is at or below the Federal Guidelines are eligible for free and reduced price meals or free milk if the school participates in the Special Milk Program. Application forms are being distributed to all homes in a letter to parents or guardians. To apply for free and reduced-price benefits, households should fill out the application and return it to the school. Additional copies are available at the principal's office in each school. A complete application is required. Households which currently receive Special Nutrition Assistance Program Benefits (SNAP, formally known as food stamps) or Ohio Works First (OWF) funds for a child must provide the child's name, the SNAP or OWF case number and signature of an adult household member on the application. Households which do not receive SNAP or OWF funds must provide the names of all household members, the last four digits of the Social Security Number of the adult signing the application or state "none" if the adult does not have a Social Security Number, the amount and source of income received by each household member, (state the monthly income) and the signature of an adult household member. If any of this information is missing, the school cannot process the application. FREE HEALTH CARE: Families with children eligible for school meals may be eligible for FREE health care coverage through Medicaid and/or Ohio's Healthy Start & Healthy Families programs. These programs include coverage for doctor visits, immunizations, physicals, prescriptions, dental, vision, mental health, substance abuse and more. Please call 1-800-324-8680 for more information or to request an application. Information can also be found on the web at http://jfs.ohio.gov/ohp/consumers/familychild.stm. Anyone who has an Ohio Medicaid card is already receiving these services. The information provided on the application is confidential and will be used only for the purpose of determining eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program official. To discourage the possibility of misrepresentation, the application forms contain a statement above the space for signature certifying that all information furnished is true and correct. Applications are being made in connection with the receipt of federal funds. Schools or other officials may check the information on the application at any time during the school year. Deliberate misrepresentation of information may subject the applicant to prosecution under applicable state and federal laws. Households will be notified of the approval or denial of benefits. Foster children are categorically eligible for free meal benefits regardless of the household's income. If a family has foster children living with them and wishes to apply for such meals or milk for them, contact the school for more information. Under the provision of the policy, the building principal will review applications and determine eligibility. If a parent or guardian disagrees with the decision on the application or the result of verification, the decision may be discussed with the determining official on an informal basis. If a formal appeal is desired, the household has the right to a fair hearing. A fair hearing can be requested either orally or in writing from: Dee Wright, Superintendent Bright Local Schools P.O. Box 299 Mowrystown, Ohio 45155 (937) 442-3114 The policy contains an outline of the hearing procedure. Households may apply for benefits any time during the school year. If a household is not currently eligible and if the household size increases or income decreases because of unemployment or other reasons, the family should contact the school to file a new application. Such changes may make the children of the family eligible for free or reduced-price benefits if the family income falls at or below the levels shown above. Non-discrimination Statement: This explains what to do if you believe you have been treated unfairly. "In accordance with Federal Law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability. To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, Director, Office of Adjudication, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C. 20250-9410 or call toll free (866) 632-9992 (Voice). HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Decide what you have to do to benefit the most financially, and set your priorities so you can reach your goals. There is no room for laziness; put your paperwork in order and take care of pending matters that are slowing you down. Focus on maximizing your potential and eliminating your weaknesses. Your numbers are 5, 12, 21, 24, 35, 38, 41. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Pressure due to personal responsibilities will grow. Push for what you want in a modest manner and you will overcome adversity. Expect to encounter ups and downs, but believe in your abilities and strive to be victorious in your pursuits. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Work alongside family, friends or neighbors to reach your goals. Stability and consistency will be required and should be the determining factor when faced with choices regarding who you work with and what you strive to accomplish. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Someone with experience will offer a solution that eliminates a problem. Call in favors and substantiate what is required to reach your goals. Your insight and unique way of presenting and promoting will pay off. Sincerity will be a determining factor. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Emotions will mount if you let your concerns fester. Speak up, and resolve issues that are stifling your ability to make the necessary moves to improve your life. An unusual lifestyle will fit your current situation and add to your creative ability. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Do whatever it takes to improve your popularity or fix problems you feel obliged to resolve. You will get back what you put out and more. A move or changes at home will bring you greater happiness and success. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Talk to individuals who have the potential to help you reach your goals. Stick to simple solutions, and walk away from an unrealistic promise. Love is in the stars, but differences of opinion or background are likely to cause a setback. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don't let your emotions interfere with your professional progress. Do what you can to show off your skills and increase your chance to advance. Educational pursuits will bring high returns in the workforce. Do your best and excel. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Reconnect with people you miss or want to form an alliance with. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Do what's right, even if it takes a little time. The changes you make will enhance your personal and financial life. Someone from your past can make a difference in your future. Set up a meeting with an old colleague, peer or boss. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Hold on to what you have. Refuse to let anyone put you in

a position that limits what you can do. Added responsibilities will have an adverse affect on a personal relationship. Listen, but don't make promises. Protect your emotional wellness. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The past can positively influence the future if you utilize everything you've learned to come up with a way to move forward financially, legally or personally. A change regarding a negative

relationship will enable you to improve your life. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Let your intuition guide you when it comes to affairs of the heart or important domestic decisions. A positive change at work can also enhance your personal life if those influenced by your choices have a say. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are strong, independent and curious. You strive to be your best.

Homework time can be a difficult moment for children as well as parents. Between making dinner, daily chores, and children who grumble or who refuse outright to do their homework, it is not easy to stay Zen! Here are seven tricks to help you:

TO

Page 13A

1 4 6 We s t B e e c h , H i l l s b o ro , O H Cell - 937.393.7977 937.763.1593

1. Establish a routine at the beginning of the school year and stick to it. Homework should be done at the same time each day, in the same place (a quiet, well-lit room), and for about the same amount of time.

2. Ban all forms of distraction. No television, music, or aimless wandering about by other family members where children are doing their homework. Put a barking dog outside! 3. Let your children empty their own schoolbags and organize their school material. Give them time to look at their teachers’ homework schedules and ask them what they have to do.

4. Stay present and available, without succumbing to the temptation of doing the homework yourself. If your children need help, show them that you are paying attention and are willing to give advice. 5. Let your children read instructions out loud. This will enable them to stay concentrated on their homework and you will also know how far along they are.

6. If they get stuck, ask them to explain to you in their own words what they understand. Then tell them what you understand. By working together you may succeed in solving the problem.

7. Always try and make homework time a positive experience, punctuated with encouragement for every effort. Your children will be all the more motivated!

Make homework time a positive experience.
