THE LETTER SHOP STILL GROWING By MEREDITH CREEK Contributing Writer

F

ulfilling commercial printing needs since 1958, The Letter Shop in Greenfield maintains a solid reputation across southern Ohio. Since September 1986, lifelong Greenfield resident Steve Pearce has owned The Letter Shop, which continues to grow with each passing year. Guy E. “Bert” Wilkin started The Letter Shop in April 1958 as a part-time printing operation. Pearce said the shop was set up inside the garage of Wilkin’s Mirabeau Street home with one small printing press providing letterheads, envelopes, statements, receipts and other simple printing to local businesses and residents. “Larger-format printing presses were added to satisfy the growing demand for sales and instructional literature from local businesses and industries,” Pearce said.

Teresa Saucedo is the latest winner of the "find the shopping bag" contest. She won a $50 gift card to Domino’s. Look for another hidden bag in this week’s Shopper. Last week’s bag was found on page 5. Please note that bags that are on a Highland County Shopper logo – ones on the front page and in sales representative’s ads, for example – do not count.

LEARNING TO MAKE LISTS

You can use Windows Live Spaces to create a gardening to-do list. Spring has sprung at my house! The daffodils are blooming down by the cabin, the garlic that overwintered in the garden is greening up, and a few “volunteer” onions have even sprouted inside the rabbit fence. Last week I shared a compilation of several March “to do lists” that I have collected through the years. My question to you this week is, did you add it to your gardening notebook? So many of us are guilty of clipping great ideas out of periodicals and then lumping them altogether in a file and then promptly stacking the file somewhere “out of sight and out of mind.” Sydney Eddison, author of “Gardening for a Lifetime,” explains that lists became a necessity for her after her husband’s death. She had been lucky enough to hire a born planner to help in the garden. The author was “gently” pushed into generating a list of what they needed to accomplish in the four hours her helper spent with her each week. They would begin each visit with a walkabout. Her helper would haul out a notebook and pencil and off they

would go with a package of large white plastic plant markers in hand. Whichever perennial needed attention, Eddison would make a note on the stake and stick it into the ground next to the plant. Her helper would then do whatever needed to be done. The author attributes much of her helper’s efficiency to the list-making habit. It is a technique frequently recommended by self-help books to establish order and reduce stress. Writing something down gets it on paper and off your mind. Soon the weekly list grew into the creation of a master list. The object is to include, literally, everything – tasks both great and small, from pruning the forsythia to mulching the flower beds. Eddison admits that compiling the master list in the first place is a tedious, time-consuming job, but it is well worth the effort. This master list helps to keep the gardener from being so overwhelmed by the enormity of what has to be done. A sampling of Eddison’s last season’s master list includes: Rake, blow, pick up sticks and

twigs on lower lawn, Seed bare patches on upper lawn, Fix damage to driveway retaining wall, Prune forsythia hedge, Mend glue, and nail loose strips of lath on front gate, Cut back variegated weigela, Order tarp, Edge front of long border, and Patch hole in the lamb’s ears in front of long border. Eddison also learned about punch lists from her newly hired handyman. She now makes notes of jobs that will require either special expertise or additional man-power and adds them to her garden punch list. At the end of the chapter the author shares her tips for list making. (1) Keep the daily list short because you probably have too many other obligations already. (2) If you are lucky enough to have help in the garden, a list for your helper will save time and therefore money. Both will be better spent. (3) Keep your Master List handy and use it to generate your daily lists. If you have a limited amount of time to spend in the garden, why not make it count? (4) In a large garden, it is important to practice a sort of horticultural “triage.” Some

things are essential; others are not. Learn to prioritize! The March 19 gardening seminar on Landscape Design has been postponed due to a scheduling conflict at Southern State Community College. We hope to have a new date set as soon as possible. The Master Gardeners Series presented by the Brown County Master has three Gardeners remaining sessions this year that include: March 15 – Flowers, April 19 – Planting in Containers, and May 17 – Herbs. All sessions are free and are held in the library at the Fincastle campus of SSCC. All sessions start at 6 p.m. There is also another opportunity to learn more about herbs on March 28 at the Fayettville/Perry Library. This workshop starts at 6 p.m. and is free to the public. Have you planted peas? Have you started seeds indoors? Have you ordered all those special seeds that were on your wish list? So many questions ... so little time before we start digging in the dirt! — submitted by Faye Mahaffey, OSU Extension Brown County Master Gardener Volunteer

Social worker looks for best way to use her psychic gifts DEAR ABBY: I will graduate from college in June and be a social worker. I am psychic, although I dislike that word because it conjures up visions of crystal balls, quacks and scams. For legitimate psychic individuals, it can be overwhelming to live this way. I first noticed my ability when I was young, but I repressed it because my folks thought I was imagining things. It began to resurge in college. This school is haunted, so I have become used to daily interactions with ghosts -often in the dead of night. I also notice that during client counseling sessions images will pop into my head. I once gave a classmate the "willies" by perfectly describing the garden in her backyard having never laid eyes on it. My adviser says I must never tell my clients the things I "see" in them because it will frighten them. It's hard to separate my own thoughts and emotions from those of spirits around me. I'm concerned about my psychic ability in relation to my clients. If I pick up on abuse in the mind of a child, for example, am I obligated to report it? Being psychic is as natural to me as my having blue eyes. It will never go away. I must now find the means to manage it. I don't want a career as a medium. I'm dedicated to the profession I have chosen. Can you offer me advice? -- GIFTED IN NEW YORK DEAR GIFTED: Instead of using your visions to form judgments about your clients, use them to guide you during interviews. If you do, you will then be better equipped to provide concrete proof of the need for an intervention than revealing you "saw" something that others can't see or wasn't disclosed to you. Many people have psychic abilities to a greater or lesser degree than you do, and those "vibes" can be invaluable. It is possible that your gift will give you insight into the individuals you will serve. I wish you success. DEAR ABBY: My wife has turned into a bona fide slug! We have been married 30 years. For half of them she stayed fit and trim, but over the past 15 she has put on 100 pounds and refuses to try to lose any of it. She also refuses

Letter Shop: continued from Page 1 Eventually the business outgrew Wilkin’s garage and was moved to its present location at 247 Jefferson Street in 1977. Close to a decade later, Wilkin retired and Pearce purchased The Letter Shop. Pearce is a graduate of Edward Lee McClain High School and furthered his education at the State University of New York-Alfred Ag Tech where he majored in business administration. He also attended Columbus College of Art and Design, Ohio University’s Chillicothe branch, as well as Hondros College for real estate appraisal pre-certification and continuing education. Stating that he has had a lifetime career in graphic arts, advertising and commercial printing, Pearce has also been a state licensed residential real estate appraiser since 1992. In addition, he has given back to the community through numerous service positions including sitting on the board of directors of the Home Building and Loan Company, being a part of the Greenfield Planning and Zoning Commission Appeals Board, and participating as a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenfield. Pearce is also the co-chair of the Greenfield Rotary’s annual Needy Kids Projects and sits on the board of direc-

D EAR AB BY Abigail Van Buren to cook. I have to cook my own meals or we eat out. She no longer cleans (we pay a maid) or has sex with me. She is obviously depressed and has taken several medications over the years to no avail. She has had lab work done, but nothing shows up. Because she doesn't have a job, she sits around in her pajamas all day playing on the computer or reading romance novels. She'll do laundry, but only after a month, when there's nothing left to wear. The other thing my wife likes to do is travel. The more expensive the trip, the more she loves it. Does God really expect me to live like this until I die? I have tried everything I can think of to help her. I dread going home every night. Advice, please? -- LIVING IN HELL IN WEST VIRGINIA DEAR LIVING IN HELL: The marriage you have described isn't "living," it is existing. Insist, as a condition of staying in the marriage, that your wife have a thorough physical and psychological evaluation. She appears to be depressed, withdrawn and possibly not in touch with reality. Her physical health is also at risk. Not every medication works on everyone. Your wife's weight gain may have made the dose she was taking ineffective -- or she may need a combination of drugs and talk therapy. Clearly she isn't happy in your marriage anymore either, if she's escaping into romance novels instead of having a relationship with you. Please get her the help she appears to so desperately need. ——— Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. Additional community service activities for Pearce include, or have included, being on the board of trustees of the Adena Greenfield Medical Center since 2001; being a life member and past director of the Greenfield Historical Society; acting as a past president on the board of directors for the Ralph W. Phillips Recreation and Civic Center; working as treasurer for the Greenfield Schools Permanent Improvement Levy Committee, the Greenfield schools’ Building Assistance Committee, and the McClain High School Boosters Club; serving as past exalted ruler of Greenfield Elks lodge No. 717; and being a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Paint Aerie No.1325 of Greenfield. At The Letter Shop, however, Pearce’s attention is on the printing needs of businesses across Highland and the surrounding counties. Pearce said the business has grown steadily and that services offered there today range from carbonless business forms to commercial silkscreen applications and copy services. Open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, The Letter Shop can be reached for commercial printing needs by calling 937-981-3117.

A time to begin the healing

by Dr. Clark And Associates PLASMA JETS INSTEAD OF DRILLS? The future of dentistry may be more akin to science fiction than patients might ever have believed. In fact, it seems that new research involving streams of bacteria-killing plasma may replace today’s drills in the near future. Plasma is formed when electrons are emitted by energized gases. In this case, researchers used a relatively cool beam of purple plasma to eliminate oral bacteria in dental cavities. The plasma beam removed dentin (the material beneath the enamel that comprises the majority of the tooth) more selectively than a conventional drill. While this research is preliminary, researchers believer that plasma jets can be ready for removing tooth decay in as few as three to five years.

Our entire staff at CLARK FAMILY DENTISTRY encourages your questions about comprehensive dental care. We supply superior oral health care for the entire family. For answers to your oral health issue questions we invite you to call our office at 937.393.3494. Your health is our first priority. We are pleased to provide you with state-of-theart dental care at 624 S. High Street, Hillsboro. Our goal is to make each visit to our office a comfortable and positive experience. New patients are always welcome. P.S. It isn’t the heat of the plasma that is thought to kill cavity-causing bacteria; it is the plasma jet that get the job done.

EUGENIA LAST the Last Word in

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, MARCH 19, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Jake Weber, 48; Bruce Willis, 57; Glenn Close, 65; Ursula Andress, 76. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Don't backtrack this year unless you have really checked out the potential consequences. It's important to know what you are up against if you don't want to face setbacks. Work and play with people who have something to offer you in return. Strive for equality and you will find the happiness you deserve. Your numbers are 3, 7, 13, 22, 26, 37, 49. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Embrace change and let your emotions guide you. Understanding what you need most will enable you to make choices that will influence your future and bring you greater security. Don't be afraid to use a little force to get your way. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Stick to what you know and do best. You'll learn a difficult lesson if you let someone take advantage of you. Don't tempt fate when it comes to traveling or following rules and regulations. Open your heart, not your wallet. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Don't let others slow you down. Size up your situation and push forward with your plans. The influence you have will win points and lead to advancement. A favor granted will make a huge difference to the way you progress. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Don't let a last-minute change upset your world or your future. Be creative and you will come up with a plan that will help you stay on course. You can learn a lot if you observe how others handle responsibility. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You'll be intuitive regarding money and health matters. Follow your gut feeling and do the responsible thing when it comes to home and family. Sticking to a budget and keeping things simple and moderate will pay off in the end. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Put more emphasis on how you treat others and how you want to be treated in return. Networking will bring good results, and a partnership with someone special will help you stabilize your life and your future. Love is highlighted. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Find ways to compromise. Avoid overindulgence. Let your intuition guide you and you will make choices that bring greater security. An older friend or relative will offer you something you cannot refuse. Old goals can now be achieved. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Home is where the heart is, and with a little finagling you can make alterations that will add to your comfort and security. Love is on the rise, and making special plans geared toward a better partnership will pay off. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Don't guess. It's crucial to be absolutely sure before you make a move. Rely on experience and call in favors from reliable people. Domestic changes will give you a new lease on life. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Take your time. Jumping to conclusions will lead to a mishap that can affect your reputation. Concentrate on building your equity and putting more time

and effort into your surroundings and relationships. Love is in the stars. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Someone will let you down if you are too trusting. Don't share your secrets or take on too much. Keep things simple and steer clear of anyone who is overindulgent physically or financially. Make choices for the right reason, not for someone else.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Dream a little dream and make it a reality. Be creative and follow a path that allows you to be unique and original. Someone you consider to be gifted will want to contribute to your goals. A partnership will pay off. BIRTHDAY BABY: You have pizzazz, charm and good work ethics. You are adaptable and progressive.
