ore than two years ago, Highland County’s Kara Juillerat discovered a new way to channel her creative

energy. Spending her days inside the classroom teaching Whiteoak High School students about computers, yearbook publication and service learning activities, Juillerat spends her evenings inside her own glass workshop. It is there that she makes a variety of hand-cut, hand-crafted jewelry local residents have come to know as Kreations by Kara. “I have always enjoyed handmade artsy items and at the Southern State (Community College) south campus there was a jewelry artist, Kristi Hall,” Juillerat said. “I ran across her pieces and thought it was really neat and that I needed just one more thing to get into.” After taking a few of Hall’s classes, Juillerat admits that jewelry-making was “pretty much addicting.” Juillerat grew up in Sinking Spring and attended Peebles High School. While in school, she said she enjoyed the creative side of her art and yearbook classes despite not being able to draw. Taking the jewelry-making classes years later, she said “I got to be back into art classes with the creative side and even though I’m not good at drawing, it doesn’t matter… I’m still considered an artist.” See HAND-CUT I Page 7

She also played volleyball and was a cheerleader for her high school. After graduating from PHS in 1997, Juillerat obtained an associate of applied science from SSCC and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in marketing and communications from Northern Kentucky University in 2002. Six years later, she earned a master’s degree in education administration from Xavier University and said she “took a few adult continuing education classes at Southern State as a hobby.” Juillerat’s career has consisted of teaching at Whiteoak where she said, “I absolutely enjoy what I do.”

She added that even though she is passionate about her job, there are some days when it is nice to go home and de-stress by engaging in her jewelry-making hobby. When asked what her jewelry creations entail, Juillerat said, “The process involves choosing colors, visualizing designs, cutting, grinding, heating the glass to 1530 degrees in my glass fusing kiln, and slow cooling before I give them the finishing touches.” The finishing touches include placing them on a bail, ring, bracelet or earring studs, she said. “This unique process combines glass-fusing techniques, technology, and the magic of artistic creativity,” Juillerat said. “I believe the fire polishing gives my jewelry creations their unique look and feel. There are never any two pieces that are alike and that’s why I consider the pieces

The eating disorder known as bulimia poses a problem for the teeth that may be overlooked. Repeated purging of stomach acids can cause significant loss of tooth enamel. In one such case, a person with a history of bulimia began treatment to correct a closed bite, characterized by decreased vertical tooth dimension and an abnormal overbite in which the lower jaw protrudes. Due to stomach acid-induced enamel loss, the patient’s incisors lost one-third to one-half of their original length. The closed bite was caused by over-eruption of the lower incisors into the space created by the eroded teeth. Fortunately, treatment of the eating problem let to aesthetic correction involving porcelain veneer crowns that could be used to restore the damaged teeth.

Bridal Guide Color Cues: What colors are you drawn to? You recently got engaged, and the excitement is brewing. You can't wait to start the wedding planning. One of the first decisions you'll face is selecting a color palette. There are so many shades to choose from. How do you decide? While some brides have no trouble selecting a color palette, others struggle with it. The good news is that there are many facets from which you may take your color cues, starting with your color faves. What colors are you drawn to? Gold? Orange? Red? If
you love red and can't picture yourself getting married without it, then you have already won half the battle. All you need to do now is select one or two more colors, and you will have your palette. If the red is rather intense, you might opt for some neutrals like white, silver, black or gray. Don't have a favorite color? No problem. Look to your choices in apparel for your color cues. Start shopping for bridesmaid dresses, and once you select a style and color, take your cues from

Lynchburg-Clay FFA Chapter receives 2-Star National Chapter Award
Chapter holds donation drive, Ag Reality Day The Lynchburg-Clay FFA Chapter participated in a donation drive Dec. 8-12, 2011 to benefit the Highland County Humane Society Animal Shelter and the Because He Lives Food Pantry in Lynchburg. The FFA chapter involved the elementary and high school students by having them donate items that varied from dog food, cat food, different age groups of clothing and food. About 50 bags and boxes full of items were donated. The chapter participated in Ag Reality Day Dec. 16, 2011 at the Hi-TEC Center in Hillsboro. Ag Reality shows juniors what it’s like to own land and the different challenges that come with owning land. Students were responsible in developing a plan of how to use their land to its fullest potential. There were representatives there from around the Highland County area. Students were responsible to talk to each representative and decide if their business would be useful for their farming business. The students learned they have to use their money wisely when owning property and when buying things for the property. This prestigious honor was accepted by co-vice presidents Erin Rowlands and Andrew Chaney on behalf of the Lynchburg-Clay FFA Chapter. On Saturday, L-C’s Rachel Clonch and Brad Keltner received their American Degrees. Clonch is the daughter of Steve and Karen Clonch and she is currently attending Southern State Community College. Keltner is the son of Wayne and Diane Keltner. Brad is currently attending The University of Kentucky. The American FFA Degree is the highest award a member can earn from the National FFA Organization and is based on the members’ agriculture projects and FFA activities.

The Lynchburg-Clay FFA Chapter attended the 2011 National FFA Convention Oct. 19-22, 2011 in Indianapolis. The chapter did many activities on the trip. On Wednesday, the group took a round barn tour along with an agribusiness tour. They American Indian Museum and enjoyed a concert that consisted of Blake Shelton, Little Big Town, and Steel Magnolia Thursday. The chapter went to Conner Prairie, which was an interactive play and tour, Friday, finishing the day at the Indy Scream Park.
