CASUAL CAMPSITES HEAD ACROSS THE IRSH

SEA

Kate Jones reports

This year, as already announced, we are crossing the water to Northern Ireland to Cookstown, County Tyrone for a ten day casual campsite from 17th26th August. Located centrally, the venue is a good base for exploring. We are at Cookstown Primary School, Molesworth St, BT80 8NK and have full use of all facilities and the hall. The school is next to the bus station, a Lidl supermarket and the town is only five minutes walk away with plenty of places for food and drink.

The Northern Ireland Group are also hosting a holiday rally at Portrush Primary School, Crocknamack Rd, BT56 8JW immediately before our Casual Campsite. For members who wish to join, I'm sure you will be given a warm welcome by the Group's members.

In September we return to an old favourite; Hendra near Newquay in Cornwall. With hardstanding and electric hookup this is always a

popular site. There is a clubhouse, shop, restaurants and swimming pools on site and the bus stop outside has buses that go into Newquay where connections can be caught to other locations.

Do you know somewhere a casual campsite could be held? All that is needed is a location where vans can be parked legally and safely. We average 40-80 units but smaller sites will still be considered. Public transport from close to the site to other places of interest would help.

The venue could be a school, field (sporting or otherwise) or a commercial campsite. Electric hookup is welcomed by many but not essential. What is essential, however, is somewhere to get water

and to empty an Elsan.

Hosts are always required for these Campsites, duties involved include checking members in and providing a focal point for the Campsite. It is good to be able to provide a tea tent as a place for members to gather and socialise but this is not essential. If you are interested in hosting or have suggestions for locations please contact me (see p4 for details).

Bookings are now being taken for Hendra, please email me at katejone@googlemail.com with your name, membership number, van registration, nights required (multiples of 7 preferred) and arrival date. It would also be appreciated if you could inform me if you intend to visit us in Cookstown.

It is with sadness that the S&WW Group announce the passing of John Pumfleet after a short illness. John, with his wife Jenny who is our club auditor, had been members for many years. We send our deepest sympathy to Jenny and all the family at this sad time.

Graham Jepson

We are sad to announce that one of our fellow East Wessex Committee Members, Graham Jepson, passed away suddenly in early February. Jill and Graham joined the MCC in 2012 and then transferred to our group in 2022. Graham's deadpan humour enlivened any meeting they attended and will be sadly missed. Our sincere thoughts go out to Jill.

Pat Watson

Very sadly, Pat Watson passed away on 18 March 2025. Pat was known by many in her own group, Avon, and by many others throughout the MCC and she will be missed by all of us. Love and sincere condolences to Pete and the family from all your Avon and MCC friends.

Mr. J. Michael Wilson

One of our long standing and respected member of the Yorkshire Group, Mr. J. Michael Wilson, passed away on 10th March. BASE VEHICLES

First Kia commercial bound for Blighty, plus some Renault’s resurrected. Gentleman Jack reports…

First off-the-blocks this month is the Kia PV5 which will be available both as a mid-size chassis-cab, and as a standard or high-roof panel van/people carrier. In common with many manufacturers headquartered in Asia, Kia is rumoured to have cut the lead-time required to go from a design exercise to full mass production from over five years to under a year. Exact length is to be confirmed, but the smart money is on it being around 4.65m/15’ 3”.

Previous generation of Estafettes… a popular choice for amateur converters. It’s a compact forwardcontrol front-wheel drive vehicle with an endearing ‘face’. However, for many the best feature was the rear access which was divided horizontally. The upper-half was a top-hinged (and usually glazed) ‘tailgate’ and the lower-half featured two side-hinged ‘barn’ doors. I have a memory of being a passenger in the rear lounge of one when it was cruising down the Champs Elysse in a parade during festival celebrations…with everything open at the back. The ‘health and safety’ preparation probably consisted of an instruction to, “Hold-on tight son”. Different times!

Renault’s Traffic E-Tech (top) is the latest development of their popular van, of which their standard-hight version has been built in Luton for many years. Sadly, the decision has been made to close the Bedfordshire plant in a matter of weeks. That said, production will transfer to the Stellantis Ellesmere Port factory…thus still built in Britain! Next La Regie to break cover features a renaissance of the Goelette name. Launch offer will include chassis-cabs, unitary box vans (above) and tippers.

Finally, just when one was beginning to think that all the current crop of newbies ‘look-thesame’, the visually-arresting new generation Estafette is unveiled. Just a quirky as the previous generation built throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s, but a much larger vehicle in every respect. New versions feature full standing-height, sliding cab doors, plus an interior space just begging to be turned into a motorcaravan.

RUN AWAY SUCCESS

Gentleman Jack celebrates 30-years of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

In the beginning…

Last month in Showroom Shortlist the first Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle was referenced. Space restrictions prevented a complete explanation. In fact, although

themselves) as ‘the first MercedesBenz van’…it wasn’t. To be 100% accurate, it was actually the first by Gottlieb Daimler and, not until he joined forces with Karl-Benz in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz AG (trading

monikered commercial appear [A], complete with three-pointed star emblem. Post World War Two M-B commercials featured strongly in the rebuilding of Germany and by the 1950’s started to be converted

control ‘Transporter’ range was favoured by German and Dutch converters [B 1955 L319], the overwhelming majority of whom were DIYers or general coachbuilders, rather than companies dedicated solely to building motorhomes. UK coachbuilders didn’t convert Mercs in any number until Auto-Trail burst on to the scene in the early 1980s. At that time the Mercedes-Benz base of choice was the T1/ TN Bremer Transporters, known in the UK as ‘Bremen Mercs’. This was a range of semi forward-control (the engine was mostly in the cab), rear wheel drive, vans and chassis-cabs. Pictured in 1992 is the Author’s carriage back then…a 1988 AutoTrail Sioux [C]. Although in different ownership, it is still on-the-road and the cherished registration number

adorns his current Bailey coachbuilt motorcaravan.

First generation 1995-2006

By the early 1990’s the Bremen Mercs were showing their age and apart from a few minor tweaks had remained pretty-much unchanged since their inception in 1977. Sprinter launched in 1995…the first M-B commercial to be named, rather than being identified by a letter or two, plus some numbers. It was far more streamlined than its predecessors, and the engine

had moved forward, enabling a less cluttered cab floor. Notable features included independent front suspension, disc brakes all-round [D], rear wheel drive and a range of petrol and diesel engines…the latter available either naturally-aspirated or turbocharged and intercooled. UK converters were quick to use…what was perceived as…a premier-cru base vehicle. One of the cleverest was the compact (4.95m/16’ 3”) Cockburn Holdsworth Lysander [E]. The Sprinter immediately won ‘International Van of the Year’ in

1995 and was generally very wellreceived, though some criticised the ‘ocean of grey plastic’ dashboard [F 2003 model pictured] and the performance of Sprintshift… an extra-cost option offering a two-pedal drive via an automated manual gearbox. Sprinter has waxed and waned (and waxed again!) in popularity over its thirty year ‘race’ against the competition. It attracts a huge variety of volume and bespoke motorcaravan converters. Two less well-known, but noteworthy, were North West RV’s which used it as a tractor-unit for their (American) Cardinal fifth-wheel leisure vehicles [G] - pictured at a show on York Racecourse (see appendix). Next is a German James Cook conversion [H] which adds an overcab Luton high-top to a panel van. Not sure about the exact year but I recall that it had ABS and Traction Control, that wouldn’t have been standard until the year 2000.

Second generation 2006-2018

Sometimes referred to as the first ‘Euro-Sprinter’, the second generation was far more than the outgoing model with a ‘nip and a

tuck’. Game changing improvements included firmer suspension (resulting in less body roll), a change to CDI diesel engines and a real broadening of the panel van range to include four different overall lengths over three wheelbases, all with a choice of three different roof heights [I]. Once again, Sprinter won International Van of the Year, this time in 2007. A further refresh in 2014 saw the replacement of Sprintshift with a torque converter seven-speed

automatic gearbox. Out of the British volume converters, only Auto-Sleeper and Auto-Trail offered Sprinter-based coachbuilts during this period, with only the former continuing to this day. Lostock Hall based, Lunar, surprised everyone with the launch of the high-top Landstar [J]. Originally in rear lounge format only, but later with alternative layouts, Landstar received critical acclaim, but unfortunately Lunar ceased trading after getting into financial difficulties. Many industry ‘big hitters’ were rumoured to be interested in taking over the defunct manufacturer, some even pledging to bring back the Landstar, but sadly it was not to be.

Third generation 2019 - present

Although frequently quoted as being the only generation that offered front wheel drive and four wheel drive, that is another urban myth. It was the first to popularise front wheel drive, but four-wheel drive had been offered as far back as 2015. Front wheel drive increased the use of the Sprinter to underpin ‘flagship’ coachbuilts, as it enabled the addition of different-length wider- >>

track torsion sprung Al-Ko Kober chassis extensions. Third generation Sprinters prioritised driver-assist systems, an industry-leading number are fitted as standard, but even more are available as cost options - aimed at different end users. All vehicle manufacturers are developing zero engine-emission models and Mercedes is no exception, promising exciting new models boasting cutting-edge battery technology for the fourth generation Sprinter. Surprisingly, e-Sprinters have been around since 2018 [K]. Over five million Sprinters have been sold, with owners spread all over the globe. More recently, American motorcaravanners have taken them to their hearts in a big way, swapping their gas-guzzling leviathans for something much nimbler, such as the pictured 2025 Winnebago View [L] . Previously, Sprinter has been badged as a Dodge or Freightliner over the pond, though it now seems

to have reverted to Mercedes-Benz. Whichever badge adorns the bonnet, there is no getting away from the fact that for a sizeable number of motorcaravanners world-wide, the Merc Sprinter is their ‘go-to’ underpinnings. I’ve been driving them for 30 years and enjoyed many live-in tests in Sprinter-based motorcaravans [M – 2003 Bϋrstner T-Star]. Here’s to the next 30 years!

Appendix

Since conducting a live-in test of a fifth-wheel leisure vehicle back in the early 1990’s, a debate has raged over whether they are a touring caravan or a demountable motorcaravan. F.W.I.W. my opinion is that if they have an articulatedlorry style ‘plate’ coupling, they are a genuine ‘fifth-wheel’ and could be considered a demountable motorcaravan. However, if – as is the case with some in use on UK roads – they have a 50mm ball coupling,

then they are better described as a touring caravan …albeit one that overhangs the pick-up’s load bed. Feel free to disagree.

Merc’s three-pointed star has been used as their logo since the mid 1920’s. In that period the company has been called Daimler-Benz, Daimler-Chrysler, Daimler AG and is now referred to as the Mercedes-Benz Group.

SCHOOLS SUMMER OUT FOR

With summer holidays on the horizon it’s time for parents and grandparents to start thinking about where to take the kids.

Frances and Michael Howorth interviewed showgoers at the NEC asking for some family favourites?

With the Caravan Camping and Motorhome Show taking place over half term many families were walking the halls with holidays on their minds. What better place then to take a straw poll asking Mums and Dads where they take the kids in the motorcaravan?

Broadly speaking, the responses from those we spoke to fell into two categories. Many told us they take kids to attractions locally and others travel the country in search of new exciting ideas. Almost all respondents told us that, as their kids age, so their interests differ. So here are the results of our poll, broken down into areas of the UK and attractions likely to be of interest to three differing age groups.

FREEDOM TO EXPLORE

Explore the local area of your chosen campsite with free rein to go off-course. Hike the trails otherwise unavailable when the little ones are around or spend the morning soaking up a rare lie-in!

BRING A FURRY FRIEND

Opting for an adult only weekend doesn't mean you have to leave all the children behind (if you have them). Bring your furry first child with you! Many adult only campsites accomodate for the little fur-babies and why not take your pooch on a romantic getaway rife with walking trails, hikes and scenic views. Perfect for our four legged friends.

DATE NIGHT ADVENTURES

Adult Only doesn't translate to no fun, there are a multitude of facilities and activities available to entertain you throughout your trip. Pick a site by a river and take a boat out for the day or indulge in a park with leisure facilities; treat yourself to the spa, swimming pool or sauna to make your time away truly relaxing. Enjoy the tranquility of a quiet site with your partner,

spending quality time in the beautiful outdoors.

GETTING MERRY

One of the many benefits of an 'Adult Only' campsite is the availability to indulge in liquid pleasure. A lot of facilities have a pub onsite or nearby and without the stress of kids bedtimes and having to be up early for finger-painting at 8am, why not indulge a little. Meet the locals, have a glass of fizz or whatever your preferred beverage might be without worrying about tripping over toys on the way home!

OPEN ALL YEAR

There's no shortage of sites that keep their doors open all year round, so no matter when you're fancying a break there's an option for everyone. If you're looking for an extra quiet retreat, booking into the colder months where sites are unlikely to be overly busy. Experience local attractions without the crowds drawn in with the summer, and even take up events and activities that might not be available in the peak-season. >>

Deadline: 5th of the month for inclusion in the following month's magazine

A total of 48 Motorhomes turned up for our Valentine's Rally at Fakenham. 1 Yorkshire, 3 Essex, 1 East Midlands and 43 from Anglia. Everyone arrived fairly quickly and once parked up the afternoon was free for members to chill out, meet up with friends, or go for a wander.

Friday evening, we were in the hall for tea and coffee followed by a quiz with mixture of general knowledge and music questions which made a nice change. The quiz got quite competitive with prizes given out for the winners and also members of the lowest scoring team. Followed by six games of Bingo which was very profitable for some members who won more than once. Saturday was a free day to have a lay in, chill with friends or go into town and maybe visit the chocolate shop. Although I did hear quite a few members made it to one of the local watering establishments. Saturday afternoon we were able to go into the hall to decorate our tables.

Saturday night we were back in the hall for some live music and dancing. Dale Diamond was a great singer and had everyone singing and dancing all evening. Sunday morning, we were back in the hall for tea, coffee and biscuits. This was followed by Benjy’s bonus ball and the raffle.

The committee has now finalized the price for our Christmas and New Years Eve rallies. Unfortunately, we have had to increase our prices this year due to the constant rising cost of food and the halls increasing in price. The Christmas rally will be £100 for the weekend and this does include your three-course meal for two people that the school chef cooks for us. I am sure you will all agree that last year he done us proud. The New Year’s Eve rally will be £65 which for all the food you get provided with is still excellent value for money. Both Rallies are now full and

paying a £20 deposit before the end of August will secure your place at the rally. Deposits for these two rallies are now being taken and this year we are asking that both Christmas and New Year Eve rallies are paid in full by 31st October. If you would like to be added to the waiting list for either our Christmas or New Year Eve rally, please contact Teresa as last year we did have some members drop out during the year.

Upcoming Rallies; 17th – 22nd April Our Easter Rally at Alderman Peel School, Wells- next-the-Sea NR23 1RB, 2nd – 5th May Sheringham High School NR26 8ND. All three rallies are bookable to Teresa on 07739 463321 or Teresa.poole50@virginmedia.com

CHILTERN

It was great to see so many at BARNSTONES, we had 20 vans camping (6 from other groups) and 18 day visitors. The availability of EHU and a welcoming community centre across from the campsite made it appealing despite the freezing temperatures.

The first night had a quiz that appeared easy, but oh no, Paul and Sharon had sought out a county flag picture quiz that had most people flummoxed! A very entertaining evening. Saturday saw the arrival of day visitors as well as campers, who had the volunteers at the tea bar busy, followed by the prep of the bacon rolls and cake which had given an air of quiet for a while. In the evening Steve and Marion laid on a handsome spread to celebrate a big birthday for Marion. Later Shirley hosted one of her bingo type quizzes, which seemed to excite the audience about the correct answers! Sunday rounded off the rally with a coffee morning and bid farewell to everyone.

Upcoming rallies: Apr 16-21, 5 nights, Farnham Sea Cadets, GU9 9LQ, BOOKABLE. May 9-11, 2 nights, Home Farm, Cardington, MK44 3SN.

EAST MIDLANDS

down very well. Bernadette and Michele went round with Lucky number ready for Sunday's draw. This was followed by two Valentine themed quizzes, provided by Janis and Dave. Both quizzes were emphatically won by our Anglia guests, who were delighted with their M & S "Berry in Love" prizes. Needless to say they are now barred from future quizzes LOL. Think everyone enjoyed their evening of romance, yet nobody left early for a night of passion, it was well past 11 before most turned in.

Saturday was set aside for people to explore the village or venture further afield. Tea, coffee and biscuits were laid on again mid afternoon, most people just enjoying a chat and an escape from the cold weather, or maybe they were saving themselves for the night to come....and what a night!! Everyone threw themselves into the Valentines theme of dressing in red and black. The evening kicked off with a glass of prosecco for everyone provided by our vice chairman Sandra. All the tables were once again dressed with decors, sweets and nibbles. A balloon arch was also erected for photo shoots. Then on came our singer Angie. Let's just say she did more than just sing, she got into character whilst performing an aerobics workout. She was a one woman band with a sprinkle of sauciness thrown in. It was at times reminiscent of Barbara Windsor in the carry on films. A great night was had by all.

Sunday morning tea and coffees preceded the usual raffle, which was very well supported. The lucky number was also drawn, which again was also well supported with all numbers sold. Larayne Harris scooping the winnings. Sandra thanked everyone for attending the rally and bid them all a safe journey home. Dave thanked everyone for making it a great weekend and for everyone who stepped in to help. Finally, it had been a little tricky parking the vans as it was half hardstanding and half grass, so it was a relief that all the vans who were parked on grass got away without fuss. Stewards Dave and Michele.

EAST WESSEX

Our valentine rally at Ringwood was well attended by sixteen vans, with two from West Wessex. After Chairman's introduction on Friday, we had a game of Table Fortunes, where each table is a team and had to answer Valentine questions (similar to Family Fortunes). After much laughter and amusement, table 4 triumphed.

This was followed by some smoochy music to end the evening with. Most people took a refreshing walk into the town on the Saturday morning. In the afternoon, we had a game of knockout skittles. For the evening as well as card bingo and the raffle, we played another game of Left/ Right/Centre as this was well received at New Year. What we didn't reckon is that our previous winner, Shelia, won once again to everyones surprise. Larry is miffed because his van is now using more fuel carrying around all those 20p pieces that Sheila won. After Chairman's Chit-Chat on Sunday morning we all departed for home and a rest.

Tattershall Rally. Good turn out, with a total of 28 vans. Janis and Chris who were co-stewarding with ourselves, unfortunately had van trouble, but still came over in their car to help with parking up the vans and setting up the hall. So many thanks to them. Meanwhile Michele dressed all the tables with a Valentines theme of hearts, balloons, chocolates and sweets. Yum! Friday evenings usual ritual of raffle and bingo sales went ahead, followed by bingo, called by Dave. Prizes of £16 a line and £33 for a full house went >>

ESSEX

Essex MCC saw a great turnout, including several vans from Anglia, on Valentine's Day at Mayflower School Billericay for our Red & Black themed cocktail weekend. There were many vans despite several cancellations due to illness. The hosts for the weekend were Chrissy and John and Jan and Pete the Hat. Members were greeted on arrival with a welcome sheet and a Valentine Dingbat quiz.

We all met up at 7pm in the 6th form which was decorated with red and black balloons and hearts and feathers, setting a romantic mood for the weekend! A clever 'guess the colour' musical quiz, by Jan and Pete set the evening off to a great start followed by a couple of games of Bingo. Raffle tickets were sold as well as tickets for Saturday nights cocktail event. Tickets proved to be in great demand. The evening ended with background music as members caught up with friends old and new. Saturday was free to wander into Billericay by foot or by bus. Lunch was enjoyed by many in the pubs and cafes of Billericay and some retail therapy was available for last-minute Valentine cards and gifts One member showed support for Billericay Town FC and saw them beat Lewes 4:2!

Despite rainy weather that evening everyone made it into the hall, looking the part in red & black, and ladies were greeted with a red rose by smart tuxedo clad John and Pete. Chris and Jan helped by Sue prepared plates of hors d'oeuvres for the cocktail evening, this was followed by trifle and cake. After the hors d'oeuvres and the raffle, mixologist Tony showed great skill in shaking various varieties of cocktails, which were garnished by his lovely assistant Gaynor. Pete the Hat DJ'd once again and most danced the evening away to some romantic tunes.

Sunday morning we had tea, coffee and biscuits and chairman Nick's chat, informing us of any updated news, as well as a big thankyou to the hosts and everyone involved in making the rally another great success.

KENT

Love was in the rather chilly air at our first rally of the 2025 season as 19 vans braved the weather and met for our St. Valentines rally at the lovely town of Sandwich. Those attending the rally found themselves, on the Friday night, in the school hall playing a game of Broomsticks and Bean Bags which was as competitive as ever! This is not a game for the faint hearted and once again the fight was on! Although we have rules, I am not sure anyone really takes any notice, but I do think shin pads may be a MUST for next time! First time ralliers really put up a good fight and came home victorious, although it was noted that a rather extraordinary number of broomsticks suffered!

On Saturday night the gangs of Al Caplonker and Bugsy Moron occupied the school hall in all their Gangster and Moll attire with Mark Blomfield and Gill Smith winning the prizes for best dressed. Tony served up some amazing Pulled Pork Baps to give us some nourishment before we attempted to play out the strategic game through the Canadian tunnel. Would it be Al (Mark Bassant) or Bugsy (Rex Lay) who would win the ownership of the hall. Al Caplonker won the day and Bugsy’s team were sent on their way. A competitive game of Musical Chairs was played out with Jean Outen coming out on top and the evening ended with us all enjoying a dance along to Mandy’s music. Our thanks are extended to Tony and Marilynne for hosting such a wonderful weekend. This was our first weekend rally of the 2025 season and a great time was had by all. We have every confidence that the season will continue to get better and better.

Upcoming rallies: Thursday 17th to Monday 21st April - St. Richards School, Bexhill, East Sussex. TN40 1SE. This rally will be held over the Easter weekend and will be hosted by Sussex Group. NENE VALLEY

Fun Farm Rally, Weston, Spalding. This was a venue where we were near to lots of activities. The bus stop was close and some went to Springfields or Spalding. Spalding proved to be a pleasant, bustling market town with independent shops that seem to have disappeared from many towns. The Crescent has several book and antique shops.

People also visited the Baytree Garden Centre, some for meals, others to look at the various shops there. The Owl Centre is much bigger than it appears and contains many birds from all over the world and some members were treated to a flying display.

GROUP NEWS

On Sunday, everyone got together for our usual coffee morning and fortunately the sun was shining. This was the first meet hosted by Colin and Lynne and they did very well. Now no longer steward virgins we will look forward to them hosting again! Margaret.

Our next rally at Prince William School, Oundle is another new venue for us on hard standing. This picturesque market town is often used by film companies as a backdrop for films like The Crown. Of note is The Talbot Hotel which was built from the wood from Fotheringhay Castle and the staircase is said to be haunted by Mary, Queen of the Scots who was executed there. Oundle is also famed for its schools and buildings and halls. Shops are nearby, Amps wine merchants and Nene Valley Brewery. Riverside walks and a pub overlooking the river. We have a room booked. May 8th to 11th sees a 4 day meet as requested by members at Batemans Brewery. There is a historical walk of 4.75 miles published on Google which may be of interest to some, starting and more importantly ending at the brewery. It is also the 80th anniversary of VE Day on the 8th May.

Upcoming Rallies: MAY 8 -11 Grange Farm Campsite, Boston Road, Wainfleet St Mary, PE24 4EU. Start Time 1pm, Bookable, Cost £11 pupn, EHU £7 extra (limited availability)

NORTHERN COUNTIES

Love was in the air at Croft near Darlington for the Valentines rally. The rally was attended by 21 units all from Northern Counties with hosts Stuart and Sue Collingwood providing a games evening on the Friday. Games consisted of Mr & Mrs, an ‘Other Half' quiz and a very interactive horse racing game with toilet rolls! Ellen Hanby’s skills of pulling a plastic horse along on a piece of toilet roll saw her crowned the winner. Ellen was certainly delighted with her love themed sweets. Whilst the room wasn’t available for our sole use on the Saturday evening, members were able to join the club for Bingo. The venue was perfectly located for members to visit Darlington and the newly refurbished and renamed railway museum ‘Hopetown’. For anyone with a love of steam railways the museum is well worth a visit. Thanks to Sue and Stuart for hosting.

Blucher rally was held over the last weekend in February and attended by 11 units. A chilled weekend giving members the option to take the bus to nearby Hexham or enjoy walks in the area. Thanks to Jean and Alan for hosting.

There are some great rallies coming up so this is great opportunity to start planning your year. As a reminder the National Rally will be held from the 22nd May to 27th May at Hatton Country World. This is a great opportunity to meet members from all over the country. Full details about the rally are published in the magazine.

The 2 upcoming rallies that are in May are both in the Lake District and are always popular with Northern Counties members. Both venues are great locations with good bus services to explore the surrounding areas. Whilst

On arrival at Regents House Grammar School on Friday afternoon, we were warmly greeted by our cheerful hosts Jaqueline and Mark Hutchinson and Caryn and Garry Brown, who speedily parked up the 35 vans attending. Members decorated their hall tables in the afternoon and a factory in China is probably working overtime to replace the number of red plastic roses that were used. The hall was decorated by the hosts and helpers including Selma and Jane and included a photo booth area and the whole effect looked wonderfully romantic. The evening entertainment featured a game of Mr and Mrs skillfully hosted by Jaqueline and scorer Caryn. Six couples were whittled down to two for the final. Brian Warnock took such an eternity contemplating his responses in the knockout round that we prepared the defibrillator for use as we feared we had lost him! Nevertheless, he and Haley made it to the final, where they were runners-up to winners Beverley and Robert Coulter. Doubtless, some couples had an inquest later about the accuracy of their partner's answers but the game was enjoyed by all. DJ Robbie ‘mixmaster’ Hewitt played great music to encourage us onto the dancefloor

On Saturday morning some of the ladies met for a craft session and Caryn showed them how to make a lovely origami box complete with a lid. Marie hinted that it would make a great jewellery box so I’m making some tiny paper rings and necklaces to fit. In the afternoon most people went into town to shop, eat or drink and Captain Sam was seen heading up a platoon of patriots marching purposefully towards the Royal British Legion to continue supporting our armed forces by donating generous sums of money across the bar. GROUP NEWS

Paul Lilley, our musical entertainer for the night, ensured the dancefloor was active all evening. As usual the raffle was held in the interval and members showed their generosity with a large number of donated prizes.

At coffee morning on Sunday Chairman Sam presented the number plate and rally attendance awards and thanked the hosts. We were very pleased to welcome new members Maureen and Kenny Stirling, Ann and Les Chambers, and Richard and Lillie Proctor to the group and hope they enjoyed their first rally and will join us at many more. Great rally, great craic and great people. Looking forward to the next one. Peter Johnston.

The venue was Blue Circle Club just outside Larne. Thank you to our hosts David, Elena, Norman and Sally. Both first timers at hosting a rally but they did a grand job. We had 31 Motorhomes attending and three new Motorhomes owned by Debbie and William Tinsley, Stephen and Mary Glenn, Bob, Susanne and Pamela Warwick. Happy and safe traveling to you all. Welcome to new member Mark McCall who arrived to check out the rally and got up to speed on things. Happy birthday to Joycelyn Stewart.

We had a busy Friday evening. Starting off with bingo, followed by live music and dancing. In the break sandwiches supplied by Norman and Sally, went down a treat. Raffle prizes included memory sticks and SD cards supplied by David and Elena. On Saturday morning some people headed either to Larne or Belfast on the train. The station only being a short walk away. Saturday evening, we had a free Barbecue cooked by Billy McBride and Harry Aston. Thank you, boys, (until the next time). Some people were able to eat outside. Later in the evening we went to the Club’s lounge for a catch up.

Coffee morning on Sunday saw Robert Watson and David Caskey being the lucky recipients of number plate draw. The chairman was delighted to remind them that this meant a free night. We had a surprise visitor who flew in for the weekend from Spain, our own Health and Safety officer Andy Clarke. The Chairman reminded everyone to check their safety devices. A reminder was given, that the North West 200 rally, was now open for bookings. See web page for details. Safe home everyone until our next rally in Enniskillen. Eleanor and Victor McFadden.

We held a Valentines rally at Orleton village hall from 14th-16th February 2025 and we had a theme of Quenn of Hearts, red and white. We had a total of 26 Vans attend, 14 Severn Valley, 8 Avon and 4 from South west Wales. Our hosts for the rally were Tony, Vice Chairman and his partner Ann. Unfortunately, Tony had Van issues so they weren’t able to stay for the whole weekend after booking everyone in and parking up the vans. The main hall was decorated by John and Pat Kirby with help from Di Preece, Val Palmer and Ann Butler with red and white heart shaped balloons, heart shaped plates with chocolate shaped hearts and roses chocolates. Tablecloths had a hearts theme too. On Friday we had a meet and greet with tea and coffee

available in the small hall, Tony welcomed everyone and wished us all a good weekend. In the evening, we used the main hall, on entering each lady was given a red rose and a couple of raffle tickets for the purpose of what would be revealed later? We all had a game of bingo to start the evening off followed by a fun game of MR &MRS and names were called out from the number on the raffle tickets, music was played after.

Saturday some people caught the bus in to either Leominster or Ludlow, while others enjoyed relaxing in the Pub or walking the dog. Saturday afternoon was enjoyed by a couple of games of bingo. Tea and coffee was available throughout the day. Saturday night we had a fantastic singer called Mitzy (daughter in law of Ann & John Butler) who sang a variety of songs from Motown, the sixties and Adele. Everyone had a thoroughly fun time and many got up dancing. Everybody bought raffle tickets which was drawn during the evening.

We had coffee morning on Sunday. Phil, our chairman, thanked everyone for attending the rally. He thanked Pat and John Kirby for setting up the main hall, Mick Emeney for helping with the parking, Jan Emeney and Jan Setchell for doing the raffle. Gail and Andrea were also thanked for helping out where required. A list of venues was put up during the weekend if people wanted to host a rally which Phil mentioned before saying goodbye and wishing everybody safe travels.

S&W WALES

Hi everyone, how lovely it is to be writing this report as the sun streams in through the window. Spring arrived a week ago and it is perfect weather for rallying and planning adventures, long may it continue.

27th Feb-2nd March – St.David’s Day Rally - Richard Gwyn School, Barry. The weather forecast was right and our hosts, Carole, Chas, Mark and May Clayton (helped by Barrie Lewis) parked up 36 vans in glorious sunshine at this popular venue. We welcomed visitors Sally & Philip Wakefield (Severn Valley). Welcome to our regular Avon visitors, Bob and Dilys Jerrett, who are now S&WW members. Welcome to the S&WW first timers Julie & Colin Jones, Idwal & Suzanne Jones. The nights were cold but we were all cosy in our motorhomes, and the school hall was perfect for socialising.

Thursday evening saw the ever-popular Bingo and background music (thanks to Keith), in the school hall; enjoying the get together after the winter break. During the daytime many took the opportunity to visit Barry, Barry Island or Penarth using the regular bus service and enjoying the beautiful spring weather.

On Friday afternoon we enjoyed tasting the Bara brith and Welsh cake competition. The winners being May Clayton (Bara brith) and joint winners of the Welsh cakes were Alex Jones and Julie Jones. In the evening we played

Bingo, and a ‘St.David’s Welsh Quiz’ which was won by Liz & Colin, Jane & Richard and Brenda & Terry who were ‘The Mixed Gang’. We all wished Chas a very Happy 79th Birthday.

On Saturday evening we were entertained by singer Kathleen Jenkins who sang a wide repertoire of songs which brought back many memories to us all. We sang Happy Birthday to Mark Randall who was, a questionable, 34?

On Sunday morning the coffee morning had the usual raffle; the Best Decorated Van was won by Heulwen & Geoff; the Bonus Ball competition (50% to the Air Ambulance) was won by Philipa. Our Chair, Sue, reported that the Club’s defibrillator will be present at all future rallies. She also reminded us that there was a Suggestion Box and that all suggestions would be appreciated by the committee. She reminded everyone that the National Rally was near Stratford this year (22nd-27th May), and all members are welcome to join the S&WW group there (booking necessary). Unfortunately, there was sad news that John Pumfleet, husband of our Auditor, Jenny, had recently died after a short illness. Also that Dave Couldrick, husband of Pam and one of our past long serving Treasurers, had also passed away on 2nd March. Our deepest sympathy is sent to both families.

SUSSEX

As the weather is slowly improving and the days are getting longer, we are all eagerly looking forward to getting out and about in our vans, meeting and making friends with like-minded people.

Our Valentine Rally at Easebourne Promary School went well, with visitors from Kent, East Wessex, Anglia and Essex groups joining us for fun, games and music. The sun shone and although still cold, we all managed to enjoy this picturesque setting. Despite serious road works delaying the hosts and some members, causing stress and late arrivals, we managed to set up in time (many thanks to our friends from Kent). Friday evening involved a Valentine Trivia Quiz, card bingo, romantic background music and complimentary home-made heart chocolates, which proved to be a tasty sweet treat for all. The weather on Saturday stayed fine, with many exploring the local area or wandering into Midhurst. The evening entertainment was provided by Vanessa Hardy is a Kent MCC member as well as a professional singer! Her performance was superb, catering for all musical tastes and getting us all involved, with winning the VRN Sweepstake a lucky and welcome bonus for her. I’m sure we will see and hear from her

Hi all, I am writing this early March and at last some sunny weather, although frosty mornings. Sunday afternoon was spent either having Sunday lunch, walking, chatting and/or snoozing.

The whole weekend we were really blessed with amazing sunshine and during the day members went by bus to Newquay or Padstow, walked the coastal path or just sat in the sun and chatted. It was lovely to see one family of four generations enjoying special memories together. Our thanks to everyone who came to make our first rally a huge success, we all enjoyed the weekend.

14 – 16 Feb Valentine’s Rally at Wetherby Racecourse. Love was in the air at our Wetherby Valentine Rally, 26 vans attended our festivities 21 Yorkshire, 3 Lancs, 1East Mid, 1 N Counties. Friday began with a love dingbat puzzle for each table to complete, followed by a Mr & Mrs competition. All contestants demonstrated a perfect match with their partner. Bingo followed a game of Name that Romantic Tune with chocolates for the winners.

Saturday was quite foggy and damp, but this did not dampen spirits as we kicked the night off with a quiz followed by a game of bingo. Members were then asked if they could find a love heart on their table… after a showing of hands the couples played the Malteser game. What an amazing sight, straws at the ready and it was game on as we watched who could feed their sweet treats to their partners the quickest. Sunday morning the members met for a tea and coffee farewell. See you all next time.

28 Feb – 2 Mar Skipton Auction Mart Another great turnout for this fine and sunny weekend at Skipton. 34 vans altogether (with a bit of an influx from 'over the Pennines') 15 Yorkshire, 15 Lancashire, 1 N.Counties, 1 N.W.Mids & N.Wales, 2 E.Mids.

of the tables decorated by the ralliers with the yellow theme, so lots of spring flowers about. Many were dressed in yellow but we didn’t see many people drinking yellow drinks! There was an issue with the heating, but being from up north we all just put on another layer. The ralliers were entertained all evening by Hosts Carol & Malcolm: Rebus Picture puzzles, Yellow/gold Flower anagrams, Yellow/gold item quiz, Bingo and Bonus Ball. As Friday night was a clear sky quite a few went stargazing for the 'Planetary Parade'.

Saturday the weather was fantastic for the time of year. Most people walked down the canal bank or through the park into Skipton, where the town centre was buzzing, and the normal Saturday market at the High Street.

Thankfully the engineer had been out so we had some heating for Saturday night where the yellow theme continued: Yellow/gold music quiz, Skipton Pub Name anagrams, conclusion of the Bonus ball and a few games of Card Bingo. Sad to say that the best dressed table prize went to …. Lancashire. Great fun and laughter was had by all.

Unfortunately there were no facilities for a coffee morning on Sunday, but the weather was pleasant enough for us all to say au revoir. Great feedback and many thanks for the efforts of Carol & Malcolm.

A CAMPSITE WITH A DIFFERENCE...

LeoBay is quite unique as it is a campsite with fitting facilities, so if there’s that little something you need doing from replacing a bulb to a complete conversion we do it all. Our experience goes back 40 years. Our core experience is in auto electrics and vehicle security as well as vehicle diagnostics, we use factory diagnostic software to solve your problems. Trained in both vehicle and mains voltages we can also inspect and test your mains hook up too! Gas that’s no problem either! Now there’s a service that makes life simple, so next time you need help, come and stay at LeoBay, a nice cuppa on arrival, we will sort your problems while you relax on our 1st class site. There’s even a courtesy vehicle to use during your stay at LeoBay!

LeoBay is a site in a million, completely built by us and independent, so all are welcome whether you’re a club member

or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £25 per night all in.

THE SHIRE OF SPIRES AND SQUIRES ABOUT

THIS MONTH WE VISIT... SOUTH OF ENGLAND

Frances and Michael

Howorth explore and tour the medieval colleges, baroque palaces, and Georgian manor houses that define the aesthetics of Oxfordshire.

With amazing architecture, history, beautiful villages, traditional market towns and hidden treasures, Oxfordshire is a wonderful place to visit in a motorcaravan. Home to famous literary figures, unique traditions and a city famous for its dreaming spires skyline, there is much to explore here. The stunning landscapes of both the Cotswolds and the Chiltern Hills, offer traditional stone villages and scenic walks for nature lovers and hikers, while the rivers Thames and Cherwell are ideal for boating, punting and riverside walks. The county also has

a strong motorsport heritage with nearby Silverstone being home to the British Grand Prix and Formula 1 teams.

We began our own exploration in Henley on Thames, a picturesque riverside gem of a town famous for hosting the Henley Royal Regatta. Staying at the Swiss Farm touring and camping site, this site was within walking distance of the town centre and was a perfect base for checking out the surrounding area. The town itself is a delight, and if you are a fan of DCI Barnaby of Midsomer Murders fame, you will feel very much at home because much of the TV action was filmed here. On the high street, the butchers Gabriel Machin, is as famous as the film sets themselves. We met current owner, Barry Wagner, who took us behind the scenes to see his traditional wood fired smokehouse, one of just five left in the country.

Elsewhere in the town local entrepreneurs offer quaint and cosmopolitan takes on eating,

drinking and shopping. Facy's department store is a timeless gem of British tradition.

Don’t be put off by its name because the Henley River & Rowing Museum displays much more than just rowing boats. The galleries include interactive displays and objects of international significance including the enchanting familyfriendly Wind in the Willows gallery, the history of Henley, riverbank wildlife conservation and of course the sport of rowing.

After a blissfully restful night on our fully serviced hard-standing pitch at Swiss Farm, we set off the next morning for a full day of activity. We drove northwards to the village of Nettlebed and parked the van in the huge carpark behind the Nettelbed Creamery. From there we walked across the rolling hills of the Chilterns taking in the clean fresh countryside air and worked up an appetite for a hearty breakfast. And the creamery has got that very well organised. In what was once a

Surrey

Officially England's most densely wooded county, more than one-fifth of Surrey’s land mass is covered by trees. That one fact alone brings motorcaravans flocking to the county. Many are on set-jetting tours seeking out movie locations and they are seldom disappointed with what they find. Featured in a whole host of blockbuster movies, Surrey has been spotted in Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Holiday and the James Bond film Skyfall. Stay overnight in the Chantries Woods just south of Guildford. The campsite is located on the North Downs and offers beautiful views over the Albury Vale and Chilworth Village. During clear weather, you can see the South Downs. It's a basic site run by the local council and bookings are essential.

cowshed, they have set up a farm shop selling their own milk, yogurts kefirs and cheeses. Best of all though, is their cheese toastie which is the perfect breakfast reward after a strenuous walk across the hills.

Next, we stopped at the Waterperry Gardens, a venue that is so much more than just a beautiful garden. Plentiful open car parking means it is easy to park the van and enjoy the amenities on offer. These include orchards, rose gardens and a fabulous gift shop and garden centre. There is also a handsome

correct to 1930s British Standards.

So perhaps the very last thing you expect to find on a former airbase is a gin distillery. But, occupying buildings used to refuel road tankers that serviced the aircraft, the Sky Wave Distilling Company offers distillery tours and tastings. Sky Wave is the result of adventureloving founders Rachel and Andrew’s pursuit of the perfect gin. The couple are committed to creating small batch ultra-premium gins full of character. The result is a multiaward-winning portfolio of gins; their original gin, Sky Wave Signature London Dry, was crowned The World’s Best Contemporary London Dry Gin at the World Gin Awards and was also awarded 2 stars by the Great Taste Awards.

If, however, you remember the name of Bicester for something other than classic cars and great tasting gin, chances are you are thinking of Bicester Village, a luxury shopping destination. This openair outlet mall offers the A to Z of designer boutiques with more than 160 brands selling fashion, beauty >>

Buckinghamshire

One almost feels sorry for Buckinghamshire, lumbered with a home counties label it does not even have a tourist department and does very little to promote itself as a place to take a motorcaravan. However, if you make the effort, undertake the research and take time to seek them out, there are some real gems. In Beaconsfield for example, there is the Bekonscot

Model Village and Railway. It is the world’s oldest model village with miniature towns, railways, and gardens. If the kids are travelling with you the Gulliver’s Land Theme Park Resort in Milton Keynes is designed for children aged 2-13 with rides and entertainment. Older kids might also enjoy the nearby Bletchley Park the World War II codebreaking centre and home of the Enigma machine.

We returned to Swiss Farm for the last night of our three day stay and the fact that we did, is testament to its great location. The next morning it was time to bid the cheerful staff goodbye as we headed for Blenheim and the picturesque village of Woodstock

Berkshire

Ascot, Eton and Windsor all seem to epitomise the glory of the Royal County of Berkshire making it a county to visit by motorcaravan. But there is more to it than just castles, fancy hats and racehorses. Legoland is a great draw for those vans with kids on board, as are the Wellington Country Park in Reading, and Beale Wildlife Park in Pangbourne.

The town is home to some of the most stunning walking and cycling trails in the South of England, including the tow path along the Kennet & Avon Canal which passes directly through its centre. Newbury offers a relaxing yet vibrant atmosphere in which to enjoy its array of independent and high street shops and restaurants, charter and specialist markets, and first-class arts and cultural experiences. The county is also famous for Donnington Castle, the Corn Exchange and The Watermill Theatre, and Highclere Castle of Downton Abbey fame!

East and West Sussex

Two counties that sit beside each other have much to offer, West Sussex has been officially named by the Met Office as the sunniest county in the UK, whilst much of East Sussex is protected as a national park, offering unspoilt natural views for those visiting in motor caravans. Between them, the counties offer a rich diversity of gorgeous coastlines and cosy countryside landscapes.

East Sussex is our home county, and we love it for its green hills and weald-lands that look like landscape paintings. The county’s roads however are so badly potholed that we cannot wait to take Voyager on travels elsewhere in the UK. But you cannot escape the fact that there are lots of exciting places to visit and things to do here. We have got towns blitzed by bloody Norman battles and some super-cool seaside resorts, the likes of Brighton and Eastbourne.

We love the 1066 dramas of our battlefields in Battle and Hastings, and we like to wander the stylish cobbled citadel of Rye. But because it is our home county, we have no special campsite to recommend.

West Sussex has fairy tale castles, glorious stately homes and rolling South Downs to unwind amidst. Get active on the South Downs National Park bridleways, cycling and walking trails that cut through scenic river valleys and ancient woodlands. Fill

your lungs with fresh English-Channel air on the beach at quintessentially English coastal towns like The Witterings, Worthing and Shoreham. Stay at perhaps the poshest and most expensive campsite in the south. The self-styled Lord and Lady Hodgkin run Concierge Camping in West Ashling. Opened for business in April 2015. The Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical architecture of Oxford gives the city its famous skyline, celebrated in poetry and literature, and while walking around Steve regaled us with stories of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and Lewis Carroll.

Carroll wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland while here and that evening we had our own meal with Alice! Located inside The Randolph Hotel Oxford, The Alice is an all-day British brasserie serving comforting, seasonal dishes with a contemporary twist.

As you will have gathered there is much to do and see in Oxford and it is worth planning an overnight stay in or near the city centre. The Park and Ride car park allows overnight parking for motorcaravans but only in the section reserved for buses and lorries. If that is a little noisy for you, then try the delightful Lincoln Park Farm caravan site in nearby Standlake.

Not to be missed in the city are the Ashmolean, Natural History, and Pitt Rivers museums all of which live up to their reputation. But if you are looking for something a little more >>

quirky then plan your visit for March and experience The Lent Bumps –nose-to-tail rowing races on the river that can frequently result in bumps, as the name implies! Races are staged between competing colleges on a short stretch that is too narrow to permit more conventional side-byside knock-out regattas.

Or why not join in the ‘May Day' celebrations with the many residents who stay up all night to take part in traditional events. At 6am, hardy students and residents gather on Magdalen Bridge to hear Magdalen College Choir sing from the top of the college’s tower. The centuries-

Isle of Wight

With countless of award-winning beaches hundreds of visitor attractions and picturesque walks and cycle paths the Isle of Wight offers the perfect island escape. Catching the Wightlink ferry there makes the adventure seem like an oversea trip without having to get the passports out. We spent a happy week or so there last year and wrote about our adventures in the April 2023 issue of this magazine. Kids love the island and one of the reasons they do is Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s summerhouse. Open to the public

and run by English Heritage, this is a treat not to be rushed. The most convenient campsite to this attraction is the delightful Waverley Park Holiday Centre. It is a handson, family run business located in East Cowes. The terraced hillside site is well laid out, so as to offer touring motorcaravans, stunning views across the Solent. It is wonderfully close to the Queen's former residence and its grounds, and our advice is to stay here an extra day and use the site to thoroughly enjoy everything that it has to offer the whole family. You will not be disappointed.

old tradition is followed by Morris dancing and singing by various other choirs.

As well as the infamous Bumps, another must-see competition is the summer race between the college tortoises. Every year, Corpus Christi College hosts the Tortoise Fair, with music, food, drink and, of course, the Tortoise Race itself. Several Oxford colleges own tortoises and enter them for the thrilling competition each year.

You may also see many students wearing the same coloured carnations at certain times of year. That’s because each exam they take is associated with a different coloured carnation. Students wearing white carnations are taking their first exams, while those wearing red are taking their finals – so wish them luck.

MEET

YOUR HOSTS

Frances and Michael Howorth tour the countryside talking to owners and operators of motorcaravan campsites. This issue they get to meet Joseph Borlase from Swiss Farm Touring and Camping Park at Henley on Thames.

How did you become involved with this campsite?

It has been a family farm now for three generations and became a caravan park when my father decided to diversify. Then, while I was at university, there was a fire here which very nearly wiped out the business. It was hard on my Mum and Dad, and it took a heavy toll on Dad who became ill. Just as I started university, he took a turn for the worse and I really had no choice then other to drop out and come back to run the family business.

How did you go about that?

That was twenty-seven years ago! Back then we were just a two-star campsite and today we are five-star full facility site. It has not been easy, but we have grown into what we are organically, embracing what works and quietly dumping things that don't. In 2008 we introduced new all-weather pitches, the car parks and roads were re-surfaced and then each year after that we have refurbished the facilities: upgrading water and electrical facilities; landscaping, adding more trees, flower beds and of course more camping pitches. We've added a cafe, swimming pool, convenience store, new reception and just last year a new laundry and dish washrooms.

What is special about this site? Besides the wonderful team here who work so hard for our customers I would suggest it is our proximity to Henley on Thames. It is a charming town on the banks of the River Thames and is known for its annual Royal Regatta, which attracts visitors from all over the world.

What is your fondest memory of the site?

I liked it when we had farm animals grazing on the land. The children loved them, and the animals reminded me of our family’s roots and heritage as farmers.

Where did you spend your own family holiday?

We went to Egypt and really liked it.

What is special about this area. The natural beauty of picturesque countryside surrounding Henley. There are plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, and picnicking. In the springtime, the region is ablaze with colourful flowers and verdant green landscapes, making it the perfect time to visit and soak up the beauty of nature. I also love Henley for its rich culture and history. It is a friendly, welcoming town, whether you’re visiting on your own or as a group, you’ll feel right at home.

What is the funniest thing that has happened at the campsite?

Back in the 90’s my Father had lots of US Navy friends who would come and visit and sometimes help out. They loved coming to Henley in between deployments. One summer one of these officers took it upon himself to rouse the whole park each morning at 6am by standing on the hill and playing Reveille loudly on his bugle. Customers didn’t know what to make of it and would come out of their tents looking bewildered.

How often are you fully booked?

Over Henley Regatta time of course, and often during the Rewind and Henley Festivals. Weekends and long bank holidays are also pretty much full between February and November.

What’s your top tip for any visitor?

Bring your electric bikes and walking shoes. Walking in the Chilterns is so exhilarating and riding along the Thames to Marlow is always fascinating.

What are your hobbies?

I love canoeing and dream about doing it in Canada one day.

What else can you do here? While there is so much to see and do off site, we are always happy to see

people staying with us enjoying the swimming pool and our café.

How would you spend the money if you won the lottery?

I would invest in a large piece of land with plenty of nature and a lake, allowing it to develop naturally. I find a lot of value in peaceful, untouched environments, and I’d love to create a space where you could unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature.

If you could invite three guests to a dinner party, who would you choose and why?

I’d go with Mark Twain, Will Ferrell, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Twain would have everyone hanging on his every word with his brilliant storytelling and satirical humour. Ferrell would keep things unhinged, probably turning the whole night into a drinking game. And Mozart, aside from being a musical genius, was also a hellraiser and loved a party. It would be the perfect mix of clever conversation, comedy and chaos.
