Garibaldi Council can’t make quorum, Riggs resigns

For the second month in a row, Garibaldi’s City Council meeting, scheduled for December 19, was canceled due to the absence of three council members.
In both months, Judy Riggs, Laurie Wandell and Gaylord Forsman were absent from and declined to participate remotely, leaving the body short of a quorum and forcing the meetings’ cancellations.
“I’m disappointed in the disrespect that was shown to the city staff,” Mayor Tim Hall said, “but also to the people who came to hear the discussion of things that we were supposed to talk about.”
In November, all three of the councilors gave notice of their inability to attend the meeting but in December only Forsman did.
Riggs said that she was exposed to someone who tested positive for Covid on the day of the November meeting and had begun showing symptoms herself.
Wandell said that she was out of town for the meeting and had alerted city staff on the Thursday or Friday before the Monday meeting.
Forsman was also absent from November’s meeting with an illness.
In December, Forsman provided notice that he would be out of town and unable to attend the regularly scheduled meeting.
However, neither Riggs nor Wandell contacted city staff to communicate their absences from the meeting and did not answer repeated calls or texts at the meeting’s appointed start time.
The Herald reached out to both Wandell and Riggs who said that they had separately decided to boycott the meeting for different reasons and without knowledge of the other’s plan to do the same.
Riggs said that she had been “subjected to a hostile work environment and harassment at City Council meetings since May 2022,” in an email.
She pointed to the “bogus” lawsuit that former City Manager Juliet Hyams announced her intention to file in October, characterizing it part of a “smear campaign.”
She said that she had “physical proof to dispute every claim,” but did not elaborate further and had refused previous opportunity to comment on the matter.
The suit will claim that Riggs led a coordinated campaign of harassment against Hyams, leading to her resignation in July.
Riggs said that she had chosen not to attend the December meeting to avoid further harassment.
Finally, she announced to the Herald that she will be submitting her resignation.
After boycotting what would have been her final council meeting Riggs said, “I can’t fulfill my obligation to the constituents of this town when I am not allowed a voice to bring up their concerns in a public meeting.”

Two residents contest Tillamook City election

Two Tillamook residents filed separate suits with the county on December 19, contesting the results of the November elections in Tillamook City Council Wards Two and Five, alleging that voters received ballots for the wrong wards. Should the claims be sustained, the election results could be set aside with a special election ordered to determine a new outcome.
The contested results in Ward 2 showed incumbent Rebekah Hopkins defeating challenger Paige Folkema by a tally of 107 votes to 83. In Ward 5, results showed incumbent Dean Crist losing to challenger Nick Torres by two votes, 128-126.
Sara Spellman O’Neill, who resides in the fifth ward, and Sarah Dentel, who lives in the second, brought the action in county court after receiving ballots for the wrong wards.
They are represented by attorney Ross Day, who said that his clients are not filing the suits in favor of a specific candidate, but out of concern that the election was not properly conducted.
Commissioners decide South County resident’s tire-fence fate

The Tillamook County Board of Commissioners handled a lengthy agenda of mostly administrative and clerical items in their last meeting of 2022 on December 21.
Approval of a $260,000 a contract to dredge the Memaloose Boat Ramp and another for just over $40,000 in bridge materials for Illingsworth Creek were the only financial outlays decided upon by the commissioners.
The meeting was lengthened considerably by a public hearing on a solid waste violation in Cloverdale, which took nearly an hour.
The hearing concerned a property on East Beaver Creek Road that has well over 100 used truck tires on it.
The resident, whose mother owns the property, told commissioners that he had become enamored with the idea of reusing truck tires for various purposes around his property some years ago.
Tillamook Tire delivered used tires to the property free of charge
and he used them to construct a wall along his property line, which he hoped to fill with dirt and berry bushes.
However, his neighbors were not fans of the aesthetic and repeatedly called county officials to the property, starting in 2019.
This began a long saga of removal of some of the tires, repeated visits to the property by county and Department of Environmental Quality officials, and correspondence but a general inertia according to Solid Waste Program Manager David McCall.
McCall told commissioners that this was why the violation was before them for a decision.
He said that beyond annoying neighbors, the tires posed an environmental threat to a creek on the property, as they are known to leach toxic chemicals into the soil as they degrade.
McCall told commissioners that DEQ requires a permit to store more than 100 tires at a property and that this property had no such permit and was well above that limit.
It quickly became apparent that the commissioners were of the same mind as the other property
owners on East Beaver Creek Road and regarded the tires as a nuisance.
They asked County Counsel Bill Sargent how far they could limit the man’s tire collecting activities, and he assured them they had wide latitude and could impose whatever limit they saw fit.
The man seemed to sense that his dream of truck tires as a onesize-fits-all solution to developing the property had come to naught and made it clear he would acquiesce to the commissioners’ decision.
He said that as part of his business he had more than ten vehicles and trailers on his property, most of which had sets of spare tires.
He asked that the commissioners take these tires into account when limiting his ability to keep tires on his property and said that he would keep them stored inside.
He also said that he would remove all the tires but asked for a longer grace period than the standard ten days to achieve the
Tillamook County Clerk Tassi O’Neill said that her office was working with the county’s attorney and the secretary of state’s office to determine the appropriate next steps, but that she could not comment further.
However, in November, O’Neill told the Herald that her office had been alerted to at least one twovoter household in Ward 5 that had received ballots for another ward’s race.
Now, there is a ten-day period that will end on January 6, for other concerned parties to come forward to the court.
After that, a hearing date for the cases will be set with one each in front of Judge Jonathan Hill and Judge Mari Garic Trevino.
The judges will be tasked with determining whether an error was made in the administration of the election and, if an error was made, whether that error had an effect on the outcome of the election. If so, they could order a new election.
The Herald was unable to confirm who would occupy the contested seats in January before the long holiday weekend but will update the story as more information becomes available.
A hearing date will be set following the ten day public comment period.

Tillamook Kiwanis Club continued their long tradition of collecting and distributing Christmas baskets. Kiwanians, Cami VonSeggern and Val Braun helped coordinate this event. TBCC hosted the space to put the baskets together for families in Tillamook County. This project supported fifteen needy families over the holidays providing holiday foods and gifts.
Tillamook Ecumenical Community organized their Christmas Basket Program again this year to help with food and gifts for individual families needing help this Christmas season. The Tillamook Volunteer Firefighters are HEROS again collecting over 600 toys for these baskets. Sacred Heart Catholic Church provides the use of their gym to set up tables of toys so the Sponsors of the baskets can basically shop for free for the toys needed for the children in the baskets they are sponsoring. The extra toys not needed by the Sponsors was given to Tide of Change and the Tillamook City Police for their use during the coming year. This toy program is only one of the many programs that the Tillamook Volunteer Firefighters help throughout the year. Be generous when you receive their donation letter this next year.

Tillamook City Manager Nathan George was offered an $18,000 pay raise by the city council on December 19 and will make $110,000 in 2023.
The council voted 3-2 in favor of the pay raise as part of George’s new contract with the city, with Councilmembers Doug Henson and Dean Crist voting no, while Councilmember Rebekah Hopkins had an excused absence.
George has been earning a salary of $92,000 this year after making $87,000 in his
first year in the position.
A report prepared by George for the council’s December 5 meeting showed that city managers in ten cities across Oregon that were most closely comparable to Tillamook were making an average of $114,000.
After hearing a staff report that confirmed that the city budget could sustain a salary of up to $130,000, councilmembers began deliberations on what they would offer George.
Henson threw out a figure of $114,000, expressing his happiness with George’s performance.
He said that he had spoken with all the city’s department heads and many employees, all of whom found George’s leadership outstanding.
Henson argued that it was necessary for the city to bring George’s compensation in line with that of his peers to reward his good work.
Councilmember Garrett Noffsinger said that while he agreed a raise was in line, he believed Henson’s suggestion represented too large a jump in terms of percentage.
He instead suggested a 10% raise to a salary of $102,000.
Henson pushed back that
this number was not high enough to properly recognize George’s performance, in his opinion.
Crist then chimed in, saying that he disagreed with Henson’s opinion on George’s performance meriting such a hefty raise.
Councilmember Brian Reynolds suggested that they compromise with an offer of $110,000.
At this point, George interjected to say that he felt a number close or equivalent to the $118,000 his predecessor Paul Wyntergreen had earned in his last year with the city would be more appropriate.
Crist pushed back saying that Wyntergreen had more experience as city manager.
Henson once again stated his support for George and said that he was doing a much better job for the city than had Wyntergreen.
With Crist and Henson at loggerheads, Reynolds circled back to the $110,000 figure, proposing a motion.
Councilmember John Sandusky seconded, and he, Reynolds and Noffsinger voted in favor of the contract offer with a salary of $110,000, while Henson and Crist both voted nay.
The new contract will last
four years and have largely the same terms as his prior contract.
The only major changes are that George will now be given six months of severance pay in case of a no-cause dismissal, and that George must give 60 days-notice of resignation, as must the council if they intend to fire him without cause.
George told the Herald that he planned to accept the city’s offer following the meeting.

Commissioners announce federal grant will help upgrade septic systems, also approves Sheriff’s Sale of property

County commissioners paved the way for Tillamook County to be the lead recipient on a multi-million-dollar grant that will help to upgrade septic systems across the county as well as in Clatsop and Columbia counties.
Commissioners made the decision at their December 16 meeting and approved the sale of property by the sheriff at an
auction, which will take place on January 31, 2023.
The grant to improve septic systems across the county will be coordinated by the Community Action Team, (CAT) which needed a county to partner with to apply for the funds from Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality.
Casey Mitchell from CAT told commissioners that the application would request just shy of $2 million, which
would be used to repair and replace aging systems.
The funds would allow CAT to perform the work at no cost for low- and middleincome residents.
Upgrades would be financed through 30-year, zero-interest loans that have no payments. Those loans would be repaid only when the property sells and forgiven if the property does not sell during the loan’s term.
This arrangement would be accessible to homeowner making less than 120% of the area’s median income.
Mitchell said that CAT has had great success with this loan structure before, usually seeing funds reused five times before being exhausted.
The grant will allow CAT to upgrade systems in Tillamook, Clatsop and Co-
lumbia counties that threaten contamination of important watersheds should they fail. Mitchell said that being able to offer the work to homeowners with no out of pocket cost made the sell much easier.
CAT will have two years to allocate the funds and an additional year to finish spending the money, allowing for flexibility in work schedules. Mitchell told commissioners that the grant has a quarterly reporting requirement.
He said that CAT would prepare the reports, but that county staff would need to review and submit them to the Department of Environmental Quality.
He told commissioners CAT had already allocated funds in the grant proposal to reimburse the county for
employee time, meaning the county would incur no cost.
Around 15% of homes in Tillamook County have septic systems according to county estimates, which also project that 5-10% of those systems are marginal or failing.
All three commissioners enthusiastically endorsed the plan and quickly voted to have Tillamook step up as the named recipient.
After approving the grant application, the board authorized an auction for real estate that has fallen into the county’s possession through tax foreclosures and other proceedings.
The auction will be held on January 31, 2023, at 1 p.m. at the Tillamook Library.
Chief of Staff Rachel Hagerty told the board that 20 pieces of property will
be auctioned, ranging in size from .02 to 40 acres with bids starting between $1,000 and $348,000.
Commissioner Erin Skaar noted that she, Hagerty and Director of Community Development Sarah Absher had checked to make sure the parcels were not potential workforce housing sites and determined they were not.
Finally, the board held a second public hearing on amendments to the county’s workforce housing tax exemption.
The updates were mostly clerical and did not entail changes to the law’s intent or function and were passed unanimously by the board following the hearing.

Tillamook County Transportation District hires new General Manager

The Tillamook County Transportation District Board offered Brian Vitulli the district’s General Manager position on December 21, and he accepted.
Vitulli will replace Mike Reed who has been serving as the interim General Manager following the death of former General Manager Doug Pilant in early
July.
Vitulli will assume leadership of the district on February 6, 2023, at an initial salary of $115,000 and is receiving $10,000 to cover moving expenses.
Green will return to his position as operations superintendent for the district following Vitulli’s arrival.
Vitulli comes to Tillamook from Colorado Springs where he has been transit planning supervisor since 2014. He has worked in transportation
districts in Philadelphia, Maryland and Colorado dating back to 1996 and has a bachelors degree in geography with a focus on planning and a master in public administration.
Board members expressed optimism for Vitulli’s tenure with the district and thanked Reed for stepping in as interim general manager.

Nehalem council discusses short-term rental regulations

Nehalem’s City Council discussed short term rental regulations and passed
several fee increases in its December 12 meeting.
Cemetery plots in Nehalem will cost $750 starting in 2023, up from $500, while business licenses will increase in price from $15 to $60 for the initial application and $40 for renewal.
Planning for new shortterm rental regulations is progressing, with councilors receiving an update on the work from City Manager Mellissa Thompson-Kiefer.
Thompson-Kiefer told the council that the planning
commission had reviewed staff proposals and agreed that a 300-foot buffer between short term rental properties in the city was a good policy.
However, after some public feedback concerned that this would overly limit licenses in certain areas, councilors asked staff to come up with a different proposal.
Councilors asked for the new proposal to divide the city into zones that will each have an allotted number of
short-term rental licenses.
Staff will prepare a plan for presentation to the planning commission and city council next year.
The council also updated the city’s employee handbook at the meeting, amending it to reflect the twelve weeks of paid leave that will be offered by the Paid Leave Oregon program, passed into law in 2019.

Hall shared the email chain wherein Wandell requested the additions, which showed that Marugg had responded to each of Wandell’s concerns.
In a phone call, Marugg said that after answering Wandell’s questions in an email he had not added those items to the agenda as they had been previously addressed in council meetings and it is against the rules of order to take up settled business again.
Wandell’s concerns included nearly $10,000 in fines by the IRS against the city, the lack of a contract for Marugg and what she believed was a procedural error in the passage of a resolution earlier in the year.
Marugg and Hall both said that in addition to the emailed response, these items had been addressed numerous times in council meetings.
The fines had been enumerated by Marugg in financial reports and the oversights that led to them had been addressed.
As for Marugg’s contract status, he said that his contract as Fire Chief had been verbally renewed following its expiration at the end of 2021, and his proposal to serve as city manager, accepted unanimously by council, was the operating contract for that role.
He said that the city’s attorney had given the okay on both arrangements.

Before adjourning the meeting, Thompson-Kiefer thanked Mayor Bill Dillard and Councilor David Cram for their service, as this was their last meeting in office.

In her email, Riggs also brought up the unadded agenda items without prompting, while maintaining that she was unaware of Wandell’s planned-but-unannounced absence.

Riggs also lost a bid to replace Hall as mayor by 20-percentage points, failing to regain the position she held before Hall’s 2020 election.
The meeting cancellations came at an inopportune time for the council, which had important items to address on both agendas.
The Oregon Department of Transportation is awaiting council approval for a major project upgrading Highway 101 in Downtown Garibaldi and the council was set to consider continued auditing work to bring the city’s finances up to date.
The latter problem has proven especially vexing for the city, which fell behind in its financial reports under former City Manager Geoff Wullschlager, who served during Riggs’s tenure as mayor.
The city’s government did not perform audits after 2018, a shortcoming that is only now being remediated by Linda Bade.
The council was set to hear an update on the progress of 2019 and 2020’s
council beginning in 2003, before becoming council president in 2015 and mayor in 2016.
Thompson-Kiefer presented Dillard with a plaque thanking him for his twenty years of service to Nehalem.
Dillard then adjourned a Nehalem city council meeting for the last time.

They reappointed justices of the peace pro tem and a member of the road advisory committee, and approved a letter of engagement for continuing legal services in labor negotiations with Peck, Rubanoff and Hatfield.
They also appointed Coun-
ty Treasurer Shawn Blanchard budget officer for the county, the solid waste service district and the 4-H and extension service.
Finally, they approved their own liaison duties for the coming year and appointed Commissioner Erin Skaar Chair of the Board for 2023, and Mary Faith Bell Vice Chair. Those appointments rotate amongst the commissioners.

That contract can be signed without council approval under city rules so the work will progress.
Hall said that he has been in touch with ODOT officials and has been keeping them updated on the delays and they are willing to work with the city to extend the deadline for approval.
But Hall repeatedly expressed his disappointment with the council majority, who he felt were obstructing the city’s functioning out of spite following results of the November election.
“The voters decided that they wanted cooperation on the city council,” Hall said.
Hall is setting up a special council meeting for the first week of January 2023, to swear in new councilors and address the ODOT contract to hopefully avoid construction delays.
He said that he was perplexed by the attitude of the three councilors who were impeding Garibaldi because of what he perceived to be personal animus.
Hall said that his only interest was working for Garibaldi; he held no grudges and was willing to work with anyone to improve the city.
“I want to gain their confidence in letting them know that I’m fair,” Hall said would be his message to Riggs’s voters.

St. Mary’s by the Sea in Rockaway Beach is doing God’s work. They are helping support two wonderful worthwhile projects on the other side of the ocean, the St. Aloysius Girls Group and the Haiti Woman’s Project. Let me tell you a bit about both!

There is a delay in the availability of 2023 tide tables. Local merchants got their orders to Coast Printing in time, but a shipping pallet (4x4x4’) of the “innards” of the tide tables was lost before Coast ever got it. A replacement shipment arrived the week before Christmas, and folks at Coast have been hustling to fold, assemble and distribute the new tide tables. Tillamook Chamber of Commerce is recruiting artists to create three by eight-foot (vertically mounted) murals for installation on properties in down town Tillamook. First, St. Aloysius Girls School in Uganda. The proceeds will help pay for the tuition for the girls and St. Mary’s help makes a tremendous difference. This endeavor began in 2016 when St. Mary’s found out this school of 350 students was in need of help. They began fundraising not just for scholarships, but also to help the school with safety and health issues. At that time St. Mary’s helped the school build a security wall around their school and offer 10 full scholarships and 25 partial. Since then, through the help of St. Mary’s and
generous donors, the school has been helped in numerous ways. I don’t want to bore you with all the details, but know that this is a huge lift for St. Aloysius. I was surprised to find out this year a water purification system was installed in spring of 2022. The cost was $4900 for two stations and now the children fill their water bottles on campus with clean safe water.
As of July 19th St. Mary’s has sent $52,500 this school year, which began January 1st. This amount funds 161 scholarships, 124 partial scholarships and 37 full scholarships. This is 40% of all enrolled students.
Then St. Mary’s begins saving for next year.
The second group they are helping is the Haiti Woman’s Project, which is a social outreach program St. Mary’s has been involved in for quite a long time. Tony and Michelle Vinciguerra made yearly trips to Haiti where Dr. Tony would help the folks with their dentistry needs. They saw a great need to help them, and this effort began. It makes a huge difference in the lives of women and their families in Haiti’s poorest region.
The Atelye Woman’s Artisan Cooperative make unique handmade, fair trade, artisan tote bags and more. This cooperative provides employment for many woman. Making a living in this poor region is a tremendous boost.
You may wonder how you can help. Well, St. Mary’s has
efforts benefiting both projects throughout the year. St. Mary’s is also suggesting, if you would like to help, that you can donate a year end gift for the young women returning to St. Aloysius in January. No donation is too small. 100% of your donation will go directly to St. Aloysius and there is absolutely no overhead charges or service fees. Hear Ye Hear Ye Garibaldians
With another election behind us, citizens of Garibaldi have made their voices and votes heard. We have re-elected Mayor Tim Hall to another term and elected two new city councilors in Linda Bade and Norman ‘Bud’ Shattuck. Congratulations to them all.
On the other hand, the outgoing councilors Laurie Wandell and Whitey Forsman and along with councilor Judy Riggs who ran for mayor apparently decided they weren’t happy with the final vote count. At the November city council meeting after the election, the three councilors all called late in the day and had an excuse not to be able to attend, hence the city could not conduct important business as a quorum is required. This affected the city staff, Sheriff’s Dept., and citizens that wanted to attend the meeting. This was apparently by design, as the December council meeting was set to convene, councilor Forsman called earlier and said he was out of town and may not make it back in time
for the meeting. While the city staff, Sheriff’s Dept., and the citizens waited for 20 minutes for the meeting to start NOTHING was heard from councilors Wandell or Riggs! The meeting could not be conducted due to the required quorum, the mayor cancelled to meeting. This is totally unprofessional. This was a slap in the face to the city and the citizens of Garibaldi. These two councilors were being vengeful and obviously did not care who they hurt.
Now, Judy Riggs who lost her election to Tim Hall for mayor is still required to fulfill her duties as a councilor on the newly elected city council. I am calling for her immediate resignation for her remaining term as a city councilor for the city of Garibaldi. She has indicated she is not interested in the betterment of the city and told the citizens of Garibaldi they are not important.

Tillamook Postal Service outage
I read Kari Anderson’s comments about sub-standard USPS service in Tillamook specifically Bay City. I live on Highway 6 and thought my USPS service delivery was unique to my location. However, after reading Kari’s comments I realized that It is not.
I have been a long-time customer of the postal service and I have never experienced no mail delivery for over a week. Hey, I thought the USPS delivered in all conditions but apparently not in Tillamook. When I tried to understand the reasons for no mail delivery, I ran into the same service challenges cited by Kari. Don’t waste your time trying to reach someone on the phone. Your finger will get sore pushing the call button on Saturday even though the sign on the door says they are open. Don’t ask the counter mail clerks for answers because they only smile and say nothing can be done.
Sadly, I don’t have confidence that this will change in the near term. If you find yourself in this situation I encourage you to complete an online form to start an investigation. Hopefully, if
School board does not have to release investigation report according to law
Following Curt Shelley’s resignation as superintendent of Tillamook School District 9 on November 14, Tillamook residents have been asking for answers as to why he departed so abruptly and why he is receiving a year’s salary as severance.
We at the Herald have followed the saga closely, detailing the costs to the district that have already surpassed $200,000 and reporting the terms of Shelley’s separation agreement, which revealed an investigation had been conducted into Shelley by Ussery Consultants, Inc. District Board Chair Matt Petty confirmed that the investigation had taken place in October but declined to comment further citing employee privacy concerns.
Several citizens have reached out beseeching the Herald to do more to reveal the contents of the report or the subject of the investigation, but unfortunately, we do not have a way to do so.
The Oregon Freedom of Information Act, passed in 1973, contains an exemption for personal information of government employees.
When we requested a copy of the report from the district’s counsel, we were informed that the investigation report was part of Shelley’s personnel file and cited the exemption when refusing to share it.
At this juncture, we could send a formal request to the district, and following a

But we do not feel this is a prudent course of action.
While we share a desire to know more about the events that led to the investigation of Shelley and why the schoolboard okayed the costly separation, that desire will remain unfulfilled.
Frustrating though it may be, this case fits squarely within the letter and the spirit of the personal information exemption in Oregon law.
Under the relevant statutes, the public has no right to further information and the district went so far as to issue a supplemental guarantee in Shelley’s separation agreement that it would not release the report.
We do not wish to antagonize the school district or overburden staff there or at the district attorney’s office with pointless clerical work and this editorial marks the end of our coverage of Shelley’s resignation.
While the separation came at a high price to taxpayers, releasing personal information would be an even higher cost to Shelley and any others involved, which is why lawmakers passed protections against such intrusion.
We will continue to cover the search for Shelley’s permanent replacement as it progresses in the New Year under the direction of the board with help from Human

As detailed in earlier coverage by the Herald, a 2022 Oregon law would have required the district to not only pay Shelley for a year but also continue to employ him had they fired him without cause.
This left the district with no way to immediately separate from Shelley without cause, yet he has departed with no cause given. With that in mind, is there any way for the large payment to be perceived as anything other than the cost of separating from an employee the board had turned on but lacked sufficient cause to fire?
These questions beg answers but for the reasons detailed we will not be able to provide them.
However, we believe we have covered the story as thoroughly as possible and will continue to do nothing less for our readers.

Several weeks ago, I paid my property taxes to Tillamook County as I have done for the last 50 years. Part of my payment, $1090.64, was for the Tillamook School District’s operations. In the December 6 Headlight

Without full disclosure, we are left with only speculation about Shelley’s misdeeds and the board’s actions.

We would like to take a moment to thank and comment Curt Shelley for his service to School District 9; our schools, children, grandchildren and staff. We saw firsthand that above all else, he cared about the welfare of our students and staff. This showed in the safety improvements made at Liberty and South Prairie, routing buses off of Stillwell and South Prairie Rd for the loading and unloading of students. Safety improvements on 12th St. in front of the High School, funneling pedestrians to the crosswalks, adding caution lights along both sides of along both sidewalks in front of the school buildings making evening activities that we all attend much safer.

Gratitude is free – The impact is priceless

Gratitude is a word we hear often from November through the holiday season. But what does it really mean, how does it impact our health and well-being, and how do we show more gratitude?
Gratitude is defined by Merriam-Webster’s dictionary as “the state of being grateful, thankfulness”. This points to gratitude being more of a passing emotion or state. Yet there are those that view gratitude as something you develop as an attitude or practice. Researcher and vulnerability expert Brene Brown says practicing gratitude is the key to cultivating joy. Her research has shown that those who are living a joyful life have achieved that joy through having a gratitude practice.
There are health benefits to practicing gratitude as well. It can help you have better sleep and last month’s article taught us why sleep is so important when it comes to our health and diabetes. There
is research showing that if you focus on positive, grateful thoughts before going to bed, you will have deeper sleep and sleep longer. Start saying a few things you are grateful for before you go to bed and watch your sleep improve.
It can also improve your physical and mental health.
Positive thinking and practicing gratitude have been shown through neuroscience research to reduce anxiety and depression. It also helps increase motivation to engage in physical activity and can reduce inflammation and fatigue. This can then decrease risks for heart failure and other illnesses. Gratitude also affects the part of the brain where we produce dopamine so gratitude literally will give you and your brain a dopamine hit.
Practicing gratitude can also improve your relationships and your self-esteem. In the research, they found that the parts of the brain that light up and are activated when practicing gratitude are the same parts of the brain associated with moral and social cognition, reward, empathy, and value judgment. Therefore, the emotion of gratitude supports a positive and sup-
portive attitude toward others.
And it can also help you develop greater self-care practices. By adopting a more positive and grateful attitude, you will begin to show yourself more care and prioritize doing things that continue to improve your health and well-being. These are all great reasons to develop a gratitude practice.
How does one develop a gratitude practice? Create a practice of journaling about what you are grateful for each day. This may be easiest to do either in the morning before your day gets busy or at night before you go to bed. Or if you are ambitious, you can do both! Another fun idea is to write down 1-3 things each day that you are grateful for on slips of paper and then put them into a jar. At the end of the year, or when you are needing some joy, you can pull the slips out and read them, reminding yourself of all the things you are grateful for. Tell people what you appreciate about them when you have the chance. You could write a letter to a friend, send them a voice memo or text, or compliment a stranger on what they are wearing. Make it a point to tell at least
one person each day something about them you like, appreciate or enjoy. Share the gratitude and watch them light up and also get your own dopamine hit. And most importantly, get in the habit of telling yourself what you are grateful for and appreciate about yourself. This one can be more difficult, especially if you are struggling with your health. You may feel like
you do not have much to be grateful for. Yet I encourage you to try, you can start small. You can do this while looking in the mirror, acknowledge something you like about yourself. Or when you’ve accomplished a task, celebrate yourself. The more positive thinking and gratitude you can show yourself and others, the better. The very best part about practicing gratitude is
that it is FREE, yet its impact is priceless!

Mr. Shelley’s leadership was especially valuable in moving us forward during the past three years of a pandemic unlike anything any of us had seen before. Fraught with confusion, disagreement and uncertainty about the correct path from nearly
everyone, he led district in the best ways anyone could have possibly known. We were fortunate to have him on board for the last four plus years and regret losing him.
At its Board meeting on Monday, December 12, 2022, The Neah-Kah-Nie School Board announced four vacant positions on its budget committee. The positons are in the following Zones:
Zones 1 - The area included in the Pine Grove Precincts.
Zone 2- The area included in the Nehalem and Foley Creek Precinct.
Zone 3 and 4 - (Common boundaries) The areas included in the Wheeler, South Rockaway Beach and North Rockaway Beach Precincts and including that area of the Twin Rocks Precinct which is contiguous with the south boundary of the Wheeler Precinct and the north boundary of the North Rockaway Beach Precinct.

The City of Bay City and the Bay City Booster Club are excited to share the winners of the Porch Parade car and house decorating competition. The winners of the car decorating are:
Husband, father, grandfather and friend, Art Makinster, entered into the presence of the Lord on December 19, 2022. He was 78. Art was born at Tillamook County General Hospital on February 23, 1944 to Alvin Wesley Makinster and Fay Smith Makinster. He attended Maple Leaf School (grades 1-4), Wilson Elementary School (5thgrade), East Elementary School (6thgrade), Tillamook Junior High School and was graduated from Tillamook High School in 1962.
While at THS he was a four-year letterman, participating in track, football and wrestling. He held the javelin record for many years. In 1962 the THS football team was TYV League Champions and he was chosen to play in the Shrine game in Portland. Art’s senior year he was the 191 lb. Oregon State Wrestling Champion for THS.
Art attended Oregon State University. He majored in math at OSU for three years then switched to engineering and was graduated with a mechanical engineering degree. In 1964 he qualified for the Olympic Wrestling Trials which were held in New York City. In 1965 he won the National AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Wrestling Championship for OSU and was put on the All-American Greco-Roman Wrestling Team. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Art married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Henderson on June 26, 1965 at the Tillamook First Christian Church. As a young man he put his faith in Christ and lived the rest of his life learning the Bible and serving the Lord. They had three children; Kimberly, Valerie and Wesley. Art was recruited and hired by IBM in 1967 his final year at OSU. While at IBM in 1970 he was given an “Outstanding Contribution Award” for developing a computer system where he traveled overseas to install it in European IBM plants. They lived in Longmont, CO for seven years before transferring to Tektronix in Beaverton, OR to be nearer to his family. While working at Tektronix he bought property in Gaston, OR where he built the family home and lived there for 40 years where he raised animals, grapes and other fruit. He retired from Tektronix/Merix in 2006.
He enjoyed hunting for both deer and elk in Eastern Oregon with the family. After his first cruise to Alaska he decided in was the ultimate vacation and enjoyed several more trips to Alaska. He also saw that all of his children and grandchildren were able to take a cruise with the family. Above all else, Art was devoted to his family. In
2009 Art returned to Tillamook and began building their final home on Makinster road which is where he grew up. He had a gentle, peaceful passing in his home surrounded by people he loved.
Art’s favorite bumper sticker was “Evolution is science fiction”. Art appreciated Sir Frederick Hoyle’s calculations that the probability of DNA being produced by chance is 10 to the 40,000thpower. By comparison the number of atoms in the known universe is 10 to the 80thpower. Your DNA has the code to direct your cells as you are being formed in the womb. Asking, “Where did that information come from?” will lead you to the source of that knowledge – it’s Jesus Christ. In the Bible, John 1:3 tells us “All things came into being through Him.” It is statistically and mathematically impossible for you to have been created by chance. Art knew that, and he would want you to know it, too. Genesis 1:27, “God created man, in His own image, in the image of God; he created him; male and female He created them.”
Art was a good, kind, caring man who was cherished and deeply loved.
Art is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bonnie and his three children: Kimberly (Jon) Warren, Valerie (Jim) Whitlatch, and Wes Makinster. Ten Grandchildren: Amy (Michael), Becky (Matt), Harry, Gabriel (Emily), Laura, Sarah (Alex), Aaron, Garrett, Gilbert and Grady and seven great-grandchildren: Ian, Eva, Emma, Carson, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Charlie. He is also survived by his brother Ron (Andrea), nephew Mike Makinster, nephew Corey (Beth) Piper and niece Lisa (Larry) Klee. His in-laws include Peggy Gitchell, Susan (Brad) Pierce, Barbara (Scott) Simmons, Jerilee Henderson, Tom (Carla) Gitchell and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Alvin and Fay Makinster, his sister Claudia (Jim) Piper, in-laws Bob and Thelma Gitchell, Jack Henderson, brothers-in-law: D. Jay Henderson and Ron Gitchell.
A memorial service will be held December 30, 2022 at 11. AM at Ocean Breeze Baptist Church, 2500 Nielsen Road, Tillamook, OR.
Tony was born on 09/05/1958 in Portland Oregon. He was the fourth child of Harold and Beatrice Barnett, who had six children. He was quiet, intelligent, and perfected the art of bad dad jokes. He loved to fish and carried equipment in the back of his car for those great fishing drive-by moments. Tony was a coastie, growing up in Rockaway Beach Oregon and then moved to McMinnville where he graduated high school. He had three girls and later in life three bonus daughters. He rode a motorcycle when his girls were small. He lived a life full of fishing, friends, family, and the Ocean. Tony was a HUGE fan of Star Trek, telling us that he wasn’t just a Trekky, but a Trekkor...whatever that means. He loved to play the guitar and sing. His favorite color was blue.
In the early 80’s he drove a bright orange Chevy Luv truck and would cram his three daughters in for road trips to the coast. Tony was a member of the U.S. Air Force and a volunteer firefighter in his younger years. It became a habit for him to save people randomly as he was often in the right place at the right time. He committed random acts of kindness frequently. He liked to share food and his possessions with others.
He achieved his Associates Degree in Civil Engineering. He was very proud of his work for the cities and counties where he resided. He worked for the City of Salem, City of Lincoln City, and Washington County where he retired two years early. Aside from his work, and all the fish he said he caught,Tony was most proud of his community theater performances and his family. Tony was a proud grandfather “Papa” of 8 grandchildren. He most recently gave away all his possessions and retired in July of 2022.
He took a road trip with his brother across the country from Oregon to South Carolina to be with his youngest daughter, her husband, and their two small sons. He loved driving, and
shared in some great memories with his brother on that long road trip. Once he arrived, he settled into the front porch life, now known as Papa’s Porch. He loved the fire pit out back, 70’s music, and the front porch rocking chairs. He seemed happiest in South Carolina with family and he got to see lightning bugs for the first time this year. His last solo road trip to Kentucky was to visit his middle daughter, where they shared stories and he played guitar around the campfire. His face lit up when his little brother Kelly arrived for a final visit in SC; they talked fishing all damn day.
Most of his family were able to capture a few last moments of life with him. Lots of laughs, love, and music. Tony found out he was sick on 10/26/2022 . He spent his final days at home, under the soft lights of the Christmas tree, surrounded by family, in care of the most capable, and loving hands of Patriot Hospice. Tony was known in life for arriving early and leaving early.
He left the world in the same way he lived in it, arriving early and leaving too soon at the age 64. He took his last breath on Earth on 12/6/2022 at 1:11 pm. The man of mystery has left us with more questions than answers, and has taken with him a piece of each of our hearts. He will be missed.

Donald enjoyed life to the fullest.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Annie of 63 years; his daughter Sherryl and his son Rick; 1 grandson and 1 greatgrandson.
Donald moved to Oahu at a very young age. He started working on a dairy farm at the age of 9 years old and continued to do so until he retired from Gienger Farms.

He is survived by his sisters Pola (David), Gertrude and Joanne of Waianae, Hawaii; his children Kanani (Jerry), Walter, Ernie (Matt), Francis (Kris) and Kathy (Dan); his hanai (adopted) children Yvonne Garcia Burdick, Doug Beeler and Mirra Bowers; 26 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; and many others who called him Pops and Papa.
A celebration of life will be held on January 14th 2023 at the Swiss Hall in Tillamook at 1 p.m. Please bring your favorite dish.
It was a beautiful fall day on November 17, 2022, when Fay Pauline (Rolie) Simmons passed away peacefully in her home in Bay City at the age of 91. Fay was born on December 27, 1930 in her family home near Colgan, North Dakota. Fay was a devoted wife and a wonderful mother. She was spontaneous and adventurous and always up for a good time. She had immense energy and enthusiasm for a long and happy life.
She was truly a beautiful woman inside and out. Her eyes were mesmerizing blue and her smile could light up the room. She was outgoing and friendly and made friends everywhere she went.
She loved watching Hallmark movies because they always had wonderful love story like her own.
Fay moved to Tillamook with her family in 1935, when she was 5 years old. Her family had a good wheat crop in North Dakota that year, so her father bought a new car. What was supposed to be a visit to Tillamook turned into a permanent move. Her parents bought the Sea Shell Restaurant on Main Street in Tillamook. While her father returned to North Dakota to tend to the family farm each crop year, the family stayed behind. Fay’s mother waitressed and ran the restaurant.
At the age of 5, Fay was permitted to attend the first grade at Wilson School in Tillamook since she had already started school in a one room school house in North Dakota. During her sophomore year, the family moved to Gervis and purchased a berry farm. They had a horse named Kitty. The berry farm turned out to be a lot of work, so the family sold the farm and moved to Salem. Fay graduated from Salem High School in
1948, although her heart belonged in Tillamook. She picked berries and hops during the summers. After high school worked at the state capital as a file clerk. She made enough money to attend Oregon State University in the fall.
In August of 1948, her brother Loren married. Fay attended the shivaree party for him and his bride on their wedding night. That night became the night of her dreams! That is when Fay meet her husband, Virgil “Bub” Simmons. Fay, who was not used to drinking, had a few too many and asked Bub to marry her. Fay continued to study at OSU until part way through her sophomore year. That is when Bub asked her to marry him.
On July 1, 1950 Fay and Bub married and made their home in Bay City. They honeymooned at Wallow Lake. They recently celebrated 72 years of marriage.
Fay and Bub then started a family; having four girls (Sandra, Cherrie, Roxanne and Pamela).
The girls had a wonderful childhood growing up in a loving home in the small community of Bay City, with their grandparents living next door.
Fay raised her girls, staying home until 1969, when she went to work at the cheese factory to earn extra money to put her girls through college. She selflessly devoted her life to her husband and her daughters.
In 1987, Fay and Bub bought a sail boat. They sailed up and down the Columbia and Willamette Rivers, then up to the San Juan’s and Canada. In 1994, they decided to sail to Mexico. They spent the winters in Mexico, finally selling their boat in 2016.
Fay loved to travel and had many wonderful trips, including two with the Tillamook Chamber of Commerce to Ireland and Portugal, where they met many wonderful people from Tillamook County.
She is survived by her husband, three of her daughters, her sister and many grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her daughter, Cherrie, predeceased her.
A joint celebration of life will be held at a later date. Remembrances may be made to Marie Mills Center, 1800 Front St, Tillamook, OR 97141, in Bub, Fay and Cherrie’s memory.
Respiratory viruses, hospitalization surge, precautions urged
On December 2, 2022, at the age of 99, Virgil “Bub” Simmons passed away peacefully in his home with his Quilt of Valor and his cat Benji on his lap. His beloved wife, Fay, passed away 15 days before. He truly passed away of a broken heart. Bub was born in his family home on Tillamook Street in Bay City on August 29, 1923. He lived in Bay City his entire life. Bub’s great grandfather came to Bay City in the 1880’s.
Bub loved his hobbies! He always had a project, or two, or ten in the works. Bub was an excellent builder. He built their mid-century ranch home in Bay City 1957-59. He and Fay took up scuba diving and sailing. He loved building large scale model airplanes and model train scenes. He raised chickens, pheasants, and turkeys in the family pool that he had converted into an aviary. Bub loved drawing, photography, sewing, woodworking, and everything else that involved his hands and his sharp mind. Most of all, Bub loved to joke, laugh and have fun!
Bub attended all 12 grades and graduated from the Bay City school. For Bub’s 14 th birthday, Bub’s father built him a 10-foot sailboat. Bub and his brothers, Raymond and Doug, spent countless hours sailing in the Tillamook Bay. Raymond, also taught him to fly while he was in high school. After the war, Bub bought a small plane.
In1943, Bub joined the service. He served in the 96 th Infantry Division of the Army, Headquarters Company. His rank when he left the service was master sergeant. He was deployed to the Pacific Theater in World War II. On October 20, 1944, he was in the 10th wave and landed at Leyte, Philippines. During combat in the Philippines, he was shot in the leg and received a Purple Heart. On April 1, 1944, he was in the 1 st wave and landed at Okinawa, Japan.

He also served in the Oregon National Guard Reserves for 24 years, retiring in 1985 as a lieutenant colonel and received an Oregon National Guard Faithful Service medal.

After the World War II, Bub returned to Bay City where he worked as a logger. In 1958, he went to work for the City of Bay City. During his time working for the city, he achieved many accomplishments (e.g. put in the citywide sewer system and water system, the water system also provided water to the Tillamook Cheese Factory; helped obtained grants for small businesses; and oversaw building of the library and city hall). He was also active on the city council. In 1977, he became mayor of Bay City and served as such for 10 years. As mayor he was involved in the League of Oregon Cities and The National League of Cities. He was also the chief of police and a volunteer firefighter. He retired from the city of Bay City in 1987 after 40 years of service to the city.

The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) advises Oregonians to take precautions against respiratory illnesses in the wake of a flood of hospitalizations.
Oregon health officials said that hospitalization rates have skyrocketed due to the combined impacts of Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, and COVID variants.
“The combination of surging flu, RSV, and COVID-19 cases is pushing hospitals past their current ICU bed capacity, which never happened during the darkest days of our COVID-19 Pandemic in Oregon,” Sidelinger said duriung a media briefing earlier this month.
The panel included the state epidemiologist for OHA, Dr. Dean Sidelinger, and three clinicians who could speak to the severity of the crisis. According to Sidelinger, between Oct. 23 and Nov. 13, Oregon saw a “fivefold” increase in child hospitalizations. While that number peaked during the week of Nov. 19, the current
hospitalization

“This year’s influenza season has begun earlier than it normally does, and we are seeing high levels of influenza nationwide,” Sidelinger said. “We will keep monitoring the influenza situation and its effect on hospitalization, but we do expect flu activity to maintain its upward trajectory into the winter, particularly as the holiday season and the gathering with loved ones continues.”

The Dec. 7 executive order from Oregon governor Kate Brown will seek to provide additional flexibility to Oregon hospitals and help address the critical workforce shortages.
“Our health care workers–our nurses, doctors, and hospital staff–are being pushed to their limits by this year’s combination of flu, RSV, and COVID-19 hospitalizations,” Brown said. “As they do everything they can to keep Oregonians healthy and safe, we must all do our part to help them. Our health care workers are working around the clock to protect the people most vulnerable to severe respiratory illnesses––including our young children and seniors.
“I am asking Oregonians to come together to help our health care heroes this
holiday season. Stay home if you are sick, stay up to date on your vaccinations, and consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor situations–especially if you are at higher risk for severe illness from RSV, the flu, or COVID-19.”
$25 million to address nursing OHA expects more than 100 contract nurses and respiratory therapists to be in place next week. OHA is also pursuing up to $25 million in additional state funding for supplemental staffing contracts.
While the clinicians discussed what the state and hospitals are working towards, they also discussed what Oregonians could do to mitigate the effects of these respiratory illnesses.
“Consider changing or postponing gatherings if your family includes young children, older adults, or individuals with underlying conditions. Stay home and limit contact with others if you are sick,” Dr. Sidelinger said. “Cover your coughs and sneezes with the inside of your elbow, or do that into a tissue that you throw away. And wash your hands regularly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer. “

Sidney Zenas Moody was born in Portland to Dora and Zenas Moody May 5, 1936. He passed away Oct. 13, 2022 in Netarts. Childhood years were spent in N.E. Portland, attending Alameda Grade School and Grant High School where he served as Student Body Treasurer.
He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1958 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and president of Canterbury Club. Being a 4th generation Oregonian and the great grandson of a former Oregon governor, Sid became interested in family history. With a friend historian, Sid traveled to The Dalles, Shaniko, Umatilla and Ashland researching the Moodys.
In 1963 Sid married Patty Mills and they lived briefly in Portland until employment took Sid to Lincoln County. He had previously been employed as a credit manager for B.W. Acceptance Corporation, an assistant credit manager at Tektronix and in sales with General Foods. In 1964, Sid became a payroll tax auditor for the State of Oregon covering Lincoln and Benton Counties. The auditor position required a move to an area near the main office in Toledo. Full time housing was minimal on the coast but Sid and Patty settled on a unique ocean front cabin near Gleneden Beach.
The 3 Moody children were born in Lincoln County and as they became school age, Sid’s territory changed to Benton County only. The family moved to Corvallis in 1977, soon finding out that being Ducks in Beaver territory was not popular. Being
passionate about baseball, Sid became an avid supporter of OSU baseball. He shared this interest with the family and often spent time with the kids at the batting cages. Living on a park, Sid decided “a good place for a baseball diamond”. He was able to mow a baseball diamond for the neighborhood enthusiasts and help with the plays. While at the Coast Sid enjoyed crabbing with the family and Saturdays at Hatfield Marine Science Lab. He also enjoyed a good game of golf and a little fishing. Family life was most important to Sid and he sought to learn more about Wallowa Lake which his 5th grade teacher spoke about. That destination became THE annual family vacation spot for 41 years. Being from a railroad family Sid’s love of train travel became that of his family’s as well. Amtrak became the way to visit the Canadian relatives and later in retirement years visiting friends and family. Sid had a unique appetite for friendships and “gatherings”. He enjoyed hosting friends in his home and barbequing his flank steak and salmon which was enjoyed by all. The grocery stores still held a fascination to see what “was new”. You could often find him talking to the butcher or to the lady at the seafood counter. He loved good music….LOUD….especially music from the 50’s, folk music, choral and gospels.
As Sid and Patty became empty nesters they returned to the Coast settling in Netarts in their “fixer upper”. Sid is survived by his wife Patty of 59 years, daughter Molly Lewellen (Kurt) of Fruitland, ID; son Ryan (Sue) of Joseph, OR; 4 grandchildren Gavin (Shelby), Corvallis, Sydney McHenry (Sidman), Great Lakes, IL, James Lewellen, Fruitland, ID, Shayla Moody Burns, Chicago, brotherin-law Rob (Susan) of Seal Rock, OR. 3 nieces and 2 nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Eugene earlier and by son Christopher in March 2022.
A memorial service will be held at St. Albans Episcopal Church at a later date.

• Stay home and avoid holiday gatherings and events when sick, and keep your child home when your child is sick, if possible.
• Cover coughs and sneezes, clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces, and regularly wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.
Consider wearing a mask indoors, especially during crowded indoor gatherings and events, particularly if you or a friend or family member are at risk for getting severely ill from RSV and other respiratory infections.
School issues Lincoln County School District Superintendent Dr. Karen Gray told The News Guard that the district schools are seeing an increase in illnesses.
“If there are a certain percent of students gone due to illness, we need to tell the county health department, she said. “I think it is 30%. But we won’t close schools unless there are no staff to teach
Gray said the schools plan to stay open to winter break.
“Then hopefully, we have time to get well and also double down on our cleaning,” she said.
Gray also recommended steps parents should take.
“Keep kids home if ill, wash hands often, don’t go to crowded places, wear a mask when appropriate, get a shot for flu and for COVID and eat well and drink water, etc,” she said.

Roby’s Invitational basketball tournament hosts good competition for local squads

Tilamook’s basketball teams came up short on the first night of the third annual Roby’s Invitational Tournament in Tillamook on December 20, with both teams losing their games.
The girls’ team fell to the North Marion Huskies 57-43, while the boys were outscored by the Oregon Episcopal School Aardvarks 76-52.
The lady Mooks came out strong as Vivian Vogel scored 5 points early, helping Tillamook to an 8-7 lead midway through the first. Vogel was the Mooks’ leading scorer on the night, scoring a combined 17.
North Marion’s press challenged Tillamook all night, but during the first quarter the Cheesemakers were able to advance the ball and score in transition several times, leaving the game tied at 14 after one quarter.
In the second, the Huskies’ press began to force turnovers but so did Tillamook’s defense
and both teams were cold from the field.
The Cheesemakers battled back and forth with the Huskies throughout the quarter, briefly taking a lead with around three minutes left.
Tori Pesterfield put up four points in the quarter and Gabi Weber-Garcia added five of her ten on the night, before the Mooks headed into the locker room trailing 27-30.
Coming out of the half, Tillamook went cold from the field as North Marion started making shots.
The Mooks only scored one point in the first four minutes of the quarter and the Huskies were able to extend their lead to 38-28.
Tillamook’s offense woke up briefly for the rest of the quarter, as Vogel added six more points, keeping the game in reach with a score of 44-37 after three.
But the fourth quarter was the Cheesemaker’s most difficult of the evening as the team only managed to add six points
to their total.
North Marion continued its consistent offensive output and pulled away as the Mooks failed to convert their attempts, winning with a final margin of 57-43.
The Mooks were also dogged by poor shooting from the charity stripe, going 2 for 14 (14%) from the line on the evening.
They followed up the loss with a loss against Banks on December 21, falling to 0-5.
They return to action on December 27, in the Vince Dulcich Tournament in Astoria with a first-round matchup against Mazama.
The boys’ team followed the lady Mooks with a frustrating loss against an Oregon Episcopal team that overwhelmed the Cheesemakers with length and a strong offensive attack.
The game was all Aardvarks from the tip, as Tillamook fell into an early 10-2 lead and trailed 25-10 after one.
The Mooks’ offensive performance picked up in the
second quarter, as Gryffen Boomer put up eight of his 13 points and Tanner Hoskins added seven of his seventeen.
But the Cheesemaker defense had no answers for the Aardvarks, and they carried a 47-30 lead into the break.
Both teams came out cold in the third quarter, but Oregon Episcopal found its stride again and pushed the lead to 21 by the end of the third, en route to a 76-52 final.
The boys fell to 1-4 on the season with the loss and followed it up with a loss to Banks the next night.
The Cheesemaker boys will start the Vince Dulcich Tournament with a matchup against North Marion on December 27.

NKN hosts Nestucca in intra-county match part II

Neah-Kah-Nie High School hosted Nestucca High School’s basketball teams for a rematch of an intra-county showdown, with both the Pirates’ teams emerging victorious at home.
In the girls’ game, roles were inverted from the last matchup two weeks ago as
Neah-Kah-Nie used a press to strong effect, while the Pirates boys once again blitzed the Bobcats with a three-point barrage.
After struggling with Nestucca’s press in the last matchup, Neah-Kah-Nie came out aggressively against the press, managing to advance the ball for transition points throughout the game. Kennedy Fletcher led the
Pirates early, putting up six points in the first quarter out of 16 total on the night.
Hailee Knight tried to keep the Bobcats in the game, scoring five points in the first quarter, but Nestucca was cold from the field and trailed 15-7 after one.
Neah-Kah-Nie applied the defensive pressure in the second quarter, forcing turnovers and building their
lead to 21-11 midway through the frame before a shooting slouch allowed the Bobcats to trim that to 21-15 at the half.
The Pirates ratcheted the defensive intensity up even further coming out of the locker room and Nestucca’s offense wilted under the pressure, turning the ball over repeatedly.
Neah-Kah-Nie’s offense also hit its stride, with another
six points from Fletcher complimented by a trio of threes, pushing the lead to 38-19 by the end of the quarter. Madison Graham added 12 points on the night.
Nestucca didn’t give up on the game and back-to-back threes from Kyla Hurliman around the four-minute mark of the fourth cut the lead back to ten, but the Bobcats couldn’t bridge the final gap.
Knight totaled 12 for the Bobcats and Hurliman 10 in the 52-36 loss.
Neah-Kah-Nie improved to 6-2 on the season with the win and has a long layoff before a matchup with YamhillCarlton at home on January 4.
Nestucca fell to 4-3 with the loss but rebounded with a 57-5 win against Perrydale at home on December 21. They will be back in action on December 27, travelling to Pleasant Hill.
The boys’ game immediately following the girls’ followed the same trajectory as had the matchup in Nestucca, with the Pirates’ outside shooting spurring an offensive explosion and handing the Bobcats a loss.
The Pirates were scorching hot from outside, hitting 15 three pointers on the night as they ran away with the game early, leading 27-7 after one.
Four Pirates had double digits, with Espin White putting up 14 of his 16 in the first quarter, and Eddie Loza 10 of his 12.
Ethan Hanson had a strong showing off the bench, contributing 14 across the second and third quarters as the Pirates lead ballooned to 46-13 at the half and 65-25 after three.
Anthony Allen put up ten for the Pirates, while Nestucca was led by 14 from Cody Hagerty and 11 from Bryson Morgan in the 83-43 loss.
Neah-Kah-Nie improved to 5-3 on the season with the win and will return to action on January 4, against Yamhill Carlton at home.
Nestucca fell to 2-6 but bounced back with a 41-37 win against Perrydale on December 21. They travel to Pleasant Hill on December 27.
