RV repair business opens in Baker By Angel Wyrwas What do you do when the oilfield goes bust? Well, if you’re Bill Nelson you just reinvent yourself. “I’ve lived through a couple of these busts,” laughs Bill. Today he is the owner of Roaming RV Repair, LLC with his wife Dora. “I figured it would make a pretty good career choice.” And he was right. Demand is high with an estimated over one million RVs on the road this year and only about 1200 certified technicians throughout the U.S. Bill attended one of only two schools in the U.S. (both are in Florida) to obtain his certification from RV Training Center. “I can do everything except engines and drive trains,” said Bill. Because he is certified, Bill can do warranty and insurance work. He is also one of a handful of technicians who is certified to plastic weld, and he offers mobile Bill Nelson fishing on Bowman-Haley RV service. “If they can’t bring it to me, I’ll Dam. go to them,” said Bill. “There is a large territory in eastern Montana that needs this service.” As if one new business wasn’t enough, Bill and Dora have taken on another project. “We fell into it really,” said Dora. “We called Bowman-Haley Campground to get a reservation for Memorial Day and found out there was no one to manage the campground. It was good timing because we were in the middle of a house deal in Florida to start the business there.” “I said right away we’d take the campground,” stated Bill. Bowman-Haley Dam is under the purview of the Army Corps of Engineers, and maintenance of the area falls to the Bowman County Water District. “We will be the concessionaires,” explained Dora. Bowman-Haley sports 1740 acres of water, at least ten species of fish, 45 electrical camping spots, numerous primitive camp sites, a marina, mini
store/tackle shop, and a restaurant. Dora was born in Cuba and raised in the San Francisco Bay area and is excited to offer some different food fare. “We plan on serving the traditional steakhouse menu and I plan on adding some of the dishes I grew up with. We are going to introduce some different flavors you don’t find much up north,” said Dora. Both Dora and Bill have cooked professionally and truly enjoy it. Bill added, “The campground is booked from now until August, but there are always cancellations so if people want to come they should definitely call.” They plan on opening the campground by May 13, maybe sooner. Zombie Fun Run kills it By Angel Wyrwas Everyone knows that The Walking Dead Zombies have made AMC even more successful, but who knew it would work so well for fundraising, too? Team Helgoth sure did as they put on a great time for all May 8. The Zombie Fun Run put on in memory of Nick Helgoth as a fundraiser for Luke Gonsioroski, a high school student currently undergoing cancer treatment, was wildly successful. “It exceeded our expectations by mountains,” said Sara Helgoth, coordinator for Team Helgoth. The music by the Rock Jocks, food, and activities kept everyone alive even though many participants were dressed as the dead. A dunking booth provided by SADD was quite the hit with participants. Bouncy houses donated by Jumpin’ Jacks and a Team Helgoth carnival kept both humans and zombies busy. People tried their skills on a miniature golf course provided by BPA. Girl Scouts made gruesome cupcakes for everyone to enjoy. “We had amazing volunteers including the Sons of the American Legion,” said Sara. The actual Zombie Run race had 130 participants. “Before this year we averaged about 40,”

Rustad retires after fulfilling career
Hansen ready to begin a new adventure
By Angel Wyrwas “I can remember from the time I was in third grade I wanted to be an elementary teacher,” said Longfellow elementary teacher Jan Rustad. “It was my dream, what I always worked for.” Growing up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Jan attended her hometown college, Western Michigan University, and graduated with a bachelor of arts, elementary education degree. “It was a teachers college,” recalls Jan. “A lot of people were graduating with teaching degrees and the market was flooded. I had a friend who graduated and JAN RUSTAD took a job at a grocery store because there were no teaching jobs. Well, that wasn’t going to be me. I really wanted to teach.” Jan had read an article her senior year that said rural areas always needed teachers. “I knew I would have to move if I was going to get a teaching position. So I got out a map of Montana and sent about 50 applications to all the places that weren’t by mountains, interstates, or big cities,” Jan said. She finally accepted a job from Baker. “I remember arriving and feeling like I had stepped back in time,” Jan said. “It was so pleasant. You felt safe and protected. There was already violence in bigger cities back then.” Jan met her husband at a Bible study after coming to Baker. The next year they were square dancing partners. “I went home on break,” said Jan, “and told my dad I thought I had met the man I was going to marry even though Allen and I hadn’t actually dated yet. Of course, my dad wasn’t ready to lose me to Montana forever.” This month will be the last in Jan’s 36 year teaching career. “My favorite things about teaching are interacting with the kids, and sharing knowledge. I love that light bulb experience when a student has been struggling with something and you help them to make sense of it,” said Jan. And she knows children say the funniest things. Jan shared this anecdote. “One day a boy said, ‘there’s something I’ve been wondering about for a long time. When Jesus lived on earth, what country did he live in?’” I responded, “Israel”. He said, “Well, I know He’s real, but what country was He from?” One memory Jan has of teaching was the blizzard of 1978. “I got pretty bored with staying in my little basement apartment and staring at the four walls, so I decided to go out and hike the two blocks to Lincoln School. I had to climb a huge drift to get in to the front door and then slid down the other side,” said Jan. “I remember that I didn’t stay and work very long SEE RUSTAD, PAGE 7
By Angel Wyrwas “My life has been a series of experiences that just happened,” said Longfellow Elementary teacher Brenda Hansen. “I did not plan it this way to get here today. I love that poem by Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken. ‘Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.’ I feel like that is the road to this life I took.” Brenda Hansen will retire this school year from a 45 year teaching career, 35 of those years spent in Baker Schools. She BRENDA HANSEN grew up in Glendive and first attended Glendive Junior College. Brenda later transferred to Eastern Montana College in Billings (now MSU-Billings) where she obtained a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation she applied to area schools for a position in elementary education. “I interviewed in another small town, was offered the job, even signed the contract to be a sixth grade teacher,” recalled Brenda, “but this was 45 years ago and things were different. When a man came available for the position, the school had lost my contract.” A friend of Brenda’s was heading to Glasgow for a teaching interview and asked if she wanted to ride along. “I was sitting in the hallway waiting and the principle asked me if I wanted to interview for a position too,” said Brenda. “I did and I got the job.” She signed a contract for $6,600 per year and spent the next 6 years in Glasgow teaching 4th and 6th grades. “The Air Force base and their school opened back up in Glasgow,” said Brenda, “so I moved there and started teaching. I remember wanting to go overseas since I was very little. I was encouraged by some military friends to apply to the overseas teaching program. I received a job offer from the Dept. of Defense for a base in Germany and a marriage proposal the same day.” Brenda accepted the teaching position and was off to Germany. Sembach Air Force Base was Brenda’s home from 1977 – 1981. “I saw the world on weekends and vacations,” said Brenda. “I was one of the last to climb the Leaning Tower of Pisa, I saw the Pope one Easter, I saw one of Yul Brynner’s last performances of The King and I, and I went to the top of Hitler’s Eagles Nest with a former SS soldier.” “One of my favorite experiences during that time was a happenchance meeting on the Spanish Steps of Rome, Italy,” said Brenda. “A friend and I were visiting there when a man asked me where in the midwest I was from. Booth finds bad error in ballot A bad error was discovered today in the official ballot as printed and distributed which may invalidate hundreds of votes for the commissionership. The office of county commissioner for the two year term and for the six year term has been combined under the one heading of County Commissioner. It is important that voters remember that they can vote for only one person for the two -year term and one for the six year term. Upon the Democratic ticket voters will observe that Akers and Sparks are candidates for the six-year term and Farwell for the twoyear term. Hence, every voter will be entitled to vote for Farwell and EITHER Sparks or Akers, but they cannot vote for both Akers and Sparks, as both are candidates for the six-year term, and voters who vote for Akers and Sparks invalidate their vote entirely. They will have to vote for Farwell and Akers or for Farwell and Sparks. On the Republican ticket Bondell, Howell, Munro and Schreiber are candidates for the two-year term, while Maxwell, McFarland and Schofield are for the six-year term. Voters may vote for one candidate in each of these groups, but if they vote for two candidates for the same term their ballot for commissioner is invalidated. Where a candidate has not specified the term for which he is a candidate, he is deemed to be a candidate for the six-year term. The error in the ballot was first discovered by Edwin Booth just as the Times had closed its last “form”. Fallon County Timely-Tips Ruth Wang ________ Funeral mass for Ruth Wang, 78, of Baker will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Baker with Father Thomas Tobin officiating. Burial will take place at St. John’s Cemetery in Baker. Visitation will take place Friday, May 13, 2016, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker with Rosary and vigil service at 6 p.m. Ruth Marie H. Wang was born to Paul and Margaret Harlow in Thompson Falls, April 11, 1938. While growing up, she helped her parents with their timber and dairy farm. She attended school in Thompson Falls where she graduated from high school as valedictorian in 1956. She started college at Montana State. In 1958 she married Allan Wang on her parents’ ranch. They were partners in every undertaking. She and Allan made their home near Ollie where they farmed and ranched. In 1967 a son, Dean, was born. In 1969 they moved to Baker and built a feed plant, “Wang Feed”, on the west edge of town. In 1987, they completed the purchase of The Bank of Baker. She was instrumental in the bank’s operation until her passing. She owned and operated the Fallon County Abstract business from 2002-2008. She enjoyed playing the piano for the Lutheran and Catholic Churches, Community Choir, and accompanying
countless music students at music festivals. She taught her grandkids how to play piano. She enjoyed watching all of the activities in which the grandkids participated. She enjoyed reading, family history, baking, sewing, photography, any and all animals, and above all, her garden and plants. Throughout the years she was active in a number of local civic organizations. The Catholic and Lutheran Churches were first and foremost in her life. She passed away on Mother’s Day, May 8, 2016, at the Billings Clinic in Billings surrounded by family. By Sherry Vogel Here are a few tried and true tips to save you minutes while cleaning. • To clean any kind of coffeepot, fill the pot with cold water, add a little baking soda, boil for a minute or so, and rinse clean. • To remove the residue from tape or stickers on glass, pull off as much tape as you can. Then coat what’s left with mayonnaise, oil, or peanut butter until it is saturated. Wash and rinse. • Get grimy cotton socks white again by boiling them in water with a slice of lemon. • To remove coffee or tea stains from fabric, spread the fabric over the sink and pour boiling water slowly through the stain. • To remove cocoa and chocolate stains, scrub the stained area immediately with ammonia. • Unflavored meat tenderizer will remove some milk and baby formula stains from fabric. Make a paste of the tenderizer and cool water, rub on the spots, allow to sit, and then wash as usual. • To remove crayon from wallpaper or paint, rub with a damp cloth and a dab of toothpaste. Then rinse with a clean, damp cloth.

After the opening ceremonies, we all sat down to a roast beef supper. The supper was followed by a speaker that we all know and love, John Pulasky. During Mr. Pulasky’s speech he talked about how technology has changed and a few interesting stories about Mr. Gunderson’s early teaching years. He only mildly roasted him. State Music Festival The following ensembles and solos received superior (I) ratings at the State Music Festival held May 6-7. The State Music Festival features over 70 schools from AA, A, B and C classes. This year’s festival was held at Billings Senior High School. Elementary Play “The Granny Awards” _______________ By Nicole Allerdings The Plevna K-6 students performed their spring play, “The Granny Awards” May 4. The concept of the play was an award show where Granny honors fairy tale characters who have given stellar performances. The awards are Best Female and Male Vocalist, Best Dramatic Scene, Best Choreography, Best Rap, and the most coveted Best Villain Award. Amidst all of the excitement, the Wolf, after acting many years with Granny in “Little Red Riding Hood”, tries to steal the Best Villain Award, but is unsuccessful. Granny thoughtfully makes him the center of attention and takes him by surprise when
she presents him with the award he has tried to steal all night. Moved by her compassion, he sobs uncontrollably as he thanks her for seeing his true self instead of the character he played in “The Three Little Pigs” and “Little Red Riding Hood”. By Dylan Sander May 9, the Plevna FFA Chapter held their annual FFA banquet at the Plevna Community Center. Opening ceremonies were conducted by Jake Edgell at 6 p.m. followed by a dinner of pulled pork provided by Hanging W Meats and prepared by Connie Lang and Birdie Rieger. Cake was served and a silent auction took place during the banquet. After dinner, the FFA students talked about the many events they participated in during the year. Jessica Paul and Cole Edgell told about the Officer Retreat; District Leadership School was presented by Jake Edgell; Dacy Buerkle shared the JD Ag Expo; Melstone was presented by Sophia Dulin; Fall and Spring Districts were told by Ashley Sander and Bret Edgell. State Convention with
stories was shared by Jessica Stockett and Dylan Sander; and Farm to School project was covered by Jenna Paul, Taylor and Trinity Rieger. Next, awards were presented by Mr. Isaacs, followed by the keynote address given by the 2015-16 Montana State Sentinel, Laina Raisler. Last, was the installation of the 2016-17 chapter officers. The evening was enjoyed by all. We enjoyed seeing many of the activities and projects in a power point presentation by Jessica Stockett. Congratulations on a great year in the FFA program! That was 24 years ago. I couldn’t afford to lose the insurance.” Unfortunately her friend did not survive the accident. “Everything changed from that moment,” said Brenda. “You think, I’m lucky to be alive, you can deal with the pain and you try to live the best life that you can to honor your friend.” When it comes to teaching, Brenda has some experience. “I always liked the independence and versatility of 6th grade. Over the years you learn to set your rules and expectations,” said Brenda. “I’m much more settled now, I think, and I try to have a classroom like a family, be respectful to each other. I believe teachers have to be tough, not try to make friends with the students.” Brenda has mixed feelings about technology. “I

At least that is something that definitely changed for the better.” “I’m excited to retire but a little nervous about not being a teacher,” said Jan. “This is a big change in my life. I’ve really been thinking lately about what I want to do when I retire. I want to serve God and my family better.”

Brenda plans to move to Great Falls to be closer to family. “I want to spend more time with my sister and nieces,” said Brenda. “I also hope to travel and have more adventures.” And if there is time left after her adventures, she just might write a book about them.

Meet the candidates running for County Commissioner If elected, what contribution would you bring to the Commission?
Dave Havens First, I will bring a servant’s heart to the Commission. I will bring the conscience of the citizens to the Commission. Traveling throughout Fallon County, I know citizens desire to see their commissioner more frequently. As commissioner, I will be available in the Commission office from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. From 1 p.m to 5 p.m. I will be visiting citizens throughout the county. The time needed to understand the issues and the concerns of the citizens dictates to me that this is a full-time position and I will treat it as such. In addition. I will bring my knowledge and experience as a past businessman contributing my thoughts to the understanding of the financial and economic issues confronting the Commission.
Meals program offered By Angel Wyrwas In correlation of Older Americans Month, the Council on Aging would like to offer some information about the meal programs they offer. “As we age, eating isn’t always as easy as it should be,” said Council on Aging Coordinator Carla Brown. “Seniors who have physical issues may have a hard time obtaining, preparing, eating or digesting food. Residents of Fallon County are fortunate to have two senior meal programs that can help.” Congregate (community) meals are defined as meals that are served to many seniors at a remote location. In Fallon County these meals are served at the Fallon Medical Complex dining room. This offers the chance to socialize and sometimes participate in additional activities. There is no “charge” to persons over 60 although they certainly appreciate the donations of those able to contribute toward the cost of a meal. “In Fallon County, we pay $9.00 for each meal served and the ‘suggested donation’ for recipients is $5.00,” explained Brown. Commodities is a food program provided through the Department of Agriculture available at the Baker Senior Center. The program works to improve the health of elderly people who are at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA foods. Each month participants receive approxi-
mately 30 pounds of food such as canned meats, peanut butter or dried beans, dairy items, noodles, rice, cereals, canned fruit and vegetables, and fruit juices. The first step to receiving meals is to contact the Council on Aging office to find out which services are right for you and which programs you may qualify for. the many complexities of financial budgeting, analysis and reporting. I am attentive to details. I have also participated in many cooperative efforts amongst public officials with a common goal to better the lives of those we serve. Communication is an important quality in a commissioner. Over the years I have engaged in countless interactions with government officials, employees, and the public. I regard listening as the first, and most important step to effective communication and a productive commission. Through my experience in public service, I have cultivated many professional relationships with private citizens and public officials. I value the views of these resources in the process of making decisions and would utilize them in the best interest of the county as a commissioner.

Hello, I am Luther Waterland and I am running for House District 37 which is comprised of Fallon, Prairie, McCone, Carter, Garfield and portions of Custer and Powder River Counties. I was born in Miles City in 1951 and attended grade school in Ekalaka. I graduated from Billings Senior High in 1969 and went on to earn a bachelor of science degree from the University of Montana. I returned to the family ranch in 1975. I leased and finally purchased the same ranch my grandparents homesteaded in 1912. Today I work our land with my wife Marlene, my son
Lucas, and his wife Jennifer. I have been active in conservation districts at the local, state and national levels serving as chairman of Carter County Conservation District for many years. After serving as president of the Montana Association of Conservation District One, I became chairman of the National Association of Conservation District Ag Lands Committee. I am past president of the Carter County Sheep and Cattle Growers Association and a former Carter County Commissioner. The years I’ve spent on boards or as a member of the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Land Planning, Carter County Museum, and other various committees have taught me we have to remain active in our local communities in order for them to survive. I chose to run for House District 37 because I believe in maintaining a strong agricultural economy. Utilizing our natural resources in a responsible manner to increase or maintain jobs to keep young people in rural Montana is vital.
