Protect our children from internet stalkers By Sherry Vogel The Montana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (MICACTF) will be providing community education regarding the prevention of internet crimes against children when Earl Campbell comes to the Plevna School gymnasium Wednesday, March 2, at 6 p.m. This informational presentation is for all adults in the community who are interested in protecting our youth against pedophiles and child predators that are using the internet to stalk their victims. The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force program is a nationwide initiative started in 1998 under the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Delinquency Prevention. By 2007, every state in the union had a funded ICAC task force

program. the Montana ICAC is currently comprised of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies who work closely with other forces established nationally and internationally to target those offenders that sexually exploit children. The ICAC program helps state and local law enforcement officials work together to educate the public, investigate cases and arrest those who use computers to prey upon and exploit children. ICAC also encourages law enforcement agencies to work with prosecutors on holding these criminals responsible for their actions. This informative presentation coming to Plevna discusses safety measures for children and parents regarding the internet, gives children and parents an idea of things they may encounter on the internet, information on how to report suspicious inter-

net activity, and internet links for children and parents to access for further information. Parents are encouraged to educate themselves so they are aware of the potential dangers imposed by cyber-space predators. A Missoula police detective, Chris Shermer, has this advice, “Be diligent when your children are online.” He added, “We don’t allow our children to go run on the highway, so we should be paying just as much attention when our children are on the information superhighway.” This Wednesday, March 2, evening event begins with a free supper which will be served at 5 p.m. Due to the subject matter, no children will be allowed into the presentation. The Plevna School will offer free child care and supervised activities during the program.

Baker Lake ice still solid . . . Environmental Health, Rich Menger, reports this week that the covering on the Baker Lake is approximately eight inches thick. With the temperatures fluctuating these past few weeks, the top layer is soft but the bottom

layers are still solid. The lake at this time does not pose a danger to people walking on it. Environmental Health will continue to monitor lake conditions.

Bulls, Broncs and Barrels event The Fallon County Fairgrounds in Baker is the place to be Saturday, Feb. 27, as the Bulls, Broncs and Barrels explodes into action. The climatecontrolled arena makes this a pleasurable wintertime event. The day begins at 8 a.m. with barrel racing registration. Cowgirls start “kicking up dust” while running the pattern at 9 a.m. The night performances begins at 7 p.m.

Friday night movie Remember the days of going out to a movie on a Friday night? Well, your opportunity to do just that has arrived. The movie “War Room” will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Baker Senior Citizen Center, Friday, Feb. 26. Admission is free. Everyone is welcome! The movie is preceded by a pizza supper at 6 p.m. hosted by Changed For Life Church.

Planning Board to update Growth Policy Submitted by Mary Grube Planner Administrative Assistant The Fallon County Commission has tasked the Fallon County Planning Board to update the 2013 Growth Policy. John How and Forrest Sanderson from KL&J have obtained a grant from CTAP to accomplish this and have entered into a contract with the Department of Commerce to perform planning services surrounding this grant. The estimated cost of this project is $12,000. This grant is 100 percent funded with no matched funds as long as the Planning Board stays within the boundaries set by the grant application. The standards set by the Montana Dept. of Commerce in the approved grant funding are as follows: • Update the County Growth Policy to conform to standards in MCA 76-1-601:607. • Utilize existing population estimates from CEIC and US Census. • Prepare a future land use map to accompany the Growth Policy; map will use Montana Cadastral data sets and local paper maps. • Prepare other relevant maps including but not limited to natural re-

sources, gravel resources and wild land urban interface. • Develop a more comprehensive plan with data based on the oil and gas pull back in the region; Growth Policy to be a complete plan with ability to update future versions as data becomes available. • Include subdivision review criteria, intergovernmental coordination and implementation schedule. • Develop a trail plan and updated policy plan for Baker Lake. • Draft Growth Policy will be available for internal county review by September 1, 2016. Public hearing and comment on draft plan by October 3, 2016 (this meeting may occur earlier if county officials have few edits to the plan). • Proposed adoption of final Growth Policy by November 14, 2016 (this meeting may occur earlier if the public has few edits to the plan). March 7, 2016 will be the kick off date to begin this project. From there the Planning Board anticipates meeting every two weeks to stay on course with the Growth Plan.

By Sherry Vogel Friday night, June 11, 2016, of the High School Rodeo Finals to be held in Baker June 7-12, the Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program (MTUPP) will be sponsoring the “Pledge to Wear Red” campaign in support of tobacco-free rodeos. Among the many students wearing red will be six lucky high school seniors who are competing and in good standing with the Montana High School Rodeo Association. They will be awarded some $17,000 worth of college scholarships. To be eligible, senior class contestants will make a pledge to be tobacco free athletes during the ten series of high school rodeos. Tobacco free pledge cards are available at each rodeo and student contestants must make a pledge before they can begin accumulating points to be considered for an award. These students will also “Pledge to Wear Red” Friday night of the rodeo finals in support of all tobacco-free athletes. During the 2015-16 rodeo year, six finalists will be selected from many qualified scholarship applicants. The six finalists will each interview during the State Finals in Baker. The scholarship awards will be as follows: two - $5,000, two - $2,500, and two - $1,000. Thanks to the MTUPP and the MHSRA diligently working together for the past eight years, Montana was the first state in the nation to establish a Tobacco-Free Rodeo. They stand firm on the belief that “tobacco has no place in Montana High School Rodeos!”. The MTUPP has also generously donated funds to purchase four “Welcome to Baker” banners. They will be displayed at each entrance to town to welcome rodeo contestants and families to Baker. The Montana Tobacco Use Prevention Program was established in 2007. This tobacco prevention program is funded by the Master Settlement Program money (1998) and grant funds from the U.S. Center of Disease Control and Prevention. Its mission is to address the public health crisis caused by the use of all forms of commercial tobacco products. Statistics reveal that four Montanans die every day from tobacco related diseases. Further studies revealed that 20 percent of all adults in Montana smoke. In addition, 13 percent of Montana youth are also smokers while another 12 percent of youth are currently smokeless tobacco users, i.e. chewing tobacco. MTUPP works to eliminate use, especially among young people through SEE MTUPP, PAGE 2

Baker and Plevna students are going to the Academic Olympics Mar. 8-9 in Miles City. . . Plevna hosted the second part of the FFA Career Development Events, Feb. 20-21. Last fall they hosted the first part with livestock and range judging. Jessica Kirschten from the Baker Chapter placed first in the Sales and Service competition and second in Prepared Public Speaking. Cassie Klos from Plevna placed second in the talent contest and Will Sparks, also of Plevna, received the Greenhand certificate. . . “Bucky”, a ten day old Columbia-Targhee cross bum lamb, visited the Fallon County Times Office Tuesday. He is owned by Gina Cantalupo and lives with two other bum friends. Gina is raising bum lambs to help with her college fund. . . The west upstairs room of the museum is getting a lot of changes - a new wall, ID tags on uniforms and artifacts. Tiger Cub Scouts toured the O’Fallon Museum Feb. 22. Rick Schell is their leader. . . Jan. 20, Jonathan Neumann was promoted in the Army to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. LTC Neumann is the son of Bob and Mikell Neumann of Baker. 20 YEARS AGO Friday, March 1, 1996 -One county commissioner for Fallon County will be elected this fall. Those filing for that position are incumbent Allen Rustad, Ralph Rising, and Ron Siring. Carole Wade has filed for re-election to her current office as Clerk of Court. . . Chris and Ida Lang will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary March 10. . . Joe Halmans is Reynolds Supermarket March Employee of the Month. . . 60 YEARS AGO Thursday, March 1, 1956 -J.K. Munsell has presently been doing his own contracting work to get started on the new drive-in theater which is being built west of Baker. . . The Ekalaka Volunteer Fire Dept., together with Les Strangford and Tim Best as committeemen, report their amateur boxing card scheduled for Mar. 10 at the Carter County High School gym is now complete. . . The courthouse has been a beehive of activity as renovation commenced several weeks ago neared completion this week. 70 YEARS AGO Thursday, February 28, 1946 -- Baker Spartans won the championship of District 4. Fully half of Baker was in Miles City for the district basketball tournament. The last time Baker won such laurels was ten years ago. Baker played Ekalaka for the championship. . . H.S. Proctor sold his jewelry business to A.L. Hartch of Beach. The new owners will call it the Jewel Box. . . State Fish and Game Commission delivered two truck loads of deer to Baker Tuesday night and the men, accompanied by Lloyd Owen and Jim Kochel, took the deer out to the Cabin Creek Game Preserve and turned them loose. . . Kenneth Briggs arrived in Baker a week ago and has been discharged from the Army after three years in the service. . . It was announced that R.H. Robinson and Dan Helgerson will take over the supervision of the MontanaDakota Utilities Co. operation in Baker division. Harry Schroth, Wayne McDonald, Bernard Hall and Jasper Bailey have been transferred to Glendive. 80 YEARS AGO Thursday, March 5, 1936-Cold and no feed were conditions that caused the loss of much stock for Fallon County farmers, but it was too much feed that lost Chris Christenson eight fine cows when about 20 head got into ground barley and overate. . . George Askin, Clarence Everson, Percy Sawyer and Jack Eichenburger were initiated into the Elks Lodge in Miles City Saturday. . . Ismay is proud of their basketball team in spite of the fact they received only fifth place in the tournament held in Miles City last week. . . Baker Park will become a reality when WPA work is resumed Mar. 6.

Gotta Question Where is Shann Schillinger these days? Former Baker High School football star Shann Schillinger, who graduated from BHS in 2005, went on to win the Tony Barbour Award as the best player that exemplifies Grizzly football at the University of Montana, Missoula. He was then selected in the sixth round (171st overall) of the NFL Draft. June 6, 2010, the Atlanta Falcons signed Schillinger to a four year contract. He ranked third on the Falcons in special teams tackles in 2010 and 2011. He played safety in the NFL for the Atlanta Falcons until he signed later for the Tennessee Titans on Dec. 3, 2013. He played one game for the team. Due to a previous injury, he was released by the Titans Dec. 13, 2013. After NFL life, Schillinger was an assistant football coach at Nebraska. Today, Shann has returned to the University of Montana in Missoula where he is now a defensive back/safeties coach at the University of Montana Griz.

Lohman named to MCC Honor Roll On the President’s Honor Roll for the fall 2015 semester at Miles Community College is Chance Lohman. In order to earn this, a 3.50 GPA or higher is needed. Chance is the grandson of Esther Wildish of rural Baker.

O’Donnell running for Public Service Commission

Rudolf John Dobeck Rudy Dobeck passed away from Parkinson’s disease at his home at The Jefferson, a retirement community in Arlington, Va., where he resided with his wife of 63 years, Daisy Esther Dickenson Dobeck. He was a former Plevna resident and was a son of the Reverend Robert Dobeck and Dorothea Rall Dobeck who were pastors/missioners of Evangelical German Congregational Churches of North America from 1922-1950. Rev. Dobeck served the Plevna church from 1939-1946. Rudy was baptized as an infant and confirmed by his father in 1940. The seven children born to this union dedicated most of their earnings from their labors and volunteer time during their formative years to support and serve their parents and churches that served God. Rudy graduated from Plevna High School in 1944. He frequently attended class reunions and was commencement speaker in 1974. In 1980, he published a “Biographical Photo Annual for the Class of ‘44 Reunion”. Rudy had very fond memories of his home and friends in the Fallon County area - his roots and values were established there. While living in Plevna, he worked for the Buergi Store, Weinschrott Hardware, and the Westmore Section of Milwaukee Railroad. On graduation from high school, he worked for the Kaiser Shipyards in Vancouver, Wash. In 1944, he was rejected from the draft because of myopic vision. He was accepted to the US Army under the “work or fight law” in February 1945 by resigning his defense shipyard job. He served in the Army of Occupation Forces in Japan from September 1945 to November 1946. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He entered college under the GI Bill and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver in 1950 and a Master of Business Administration from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. His career included four years of high school and university teaching and 36 years

By Sherry Vogel Republican candidate for Public Service Commission Tony O’Donnell announced his candidacy for the District No. 2 seat Feb. 22. He is running against Republican Kirk Bushmen who has held the seat for one four-year term. O’Donnell is distributing his news releases by visiting newspaper offices throughout District 2. District 2 encompasses ten counties including Fallon, Carter, Custer, Powder River, Prairie, Rosebud, Yellowstone, Carbon, Big Horn

and Treasure. O’Donnell, not related to the local O’Donnells, was born and raised in San Diego, California. He has been a resident of Billings for the past 22 years. While supporting local conservative candidates, O’Donnell has run three times for state legislature, losing by narrow margins. O’Donnell states, “My constant goal on the PSC will be to guarantee Montana families and busi- reliable delivery of that ennesses the lowest possible energy,” said O’Donnell. “Afergy rates and the most fordability and reliability are my number one priorities.”

Survivors in addition to his wife, Daisy; include three children and their spouses, Robert Bradley Dobeck and JessieKay Weili Cheng of Arlington, Va., Victoria Dobeck Davey and Richard Davey of Bethesda, Md., and Peggy Pearson and Neil Pearson of Champaign, Ill.; six grandchildren, Dylan Frances Davey, Carl William Pearson, Neil David Pearson, Jr., Elizabeth victoria Pearson and Emma Leigh Davey. Rudy is also survived by two brothers, Benjamin Dobeck and wife Ingrid of Kingsport, Tenn., and Helmut Richard (Mac) Dobeck of Las Vegas, Nev. and Terra Alta, West Va.; 23 nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Mar. 19, 2016 in Arlington, Va. His remains will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.

Submitted by Kodie Olsen, 4-H Program Assistant The Fallon/Carter County Extension hosted a “Building Better Beef” workshop for 4H and FFA youth Feb. 13 at the Baker Senior Center. There were 21 youth who attended. Youth who are enrolled in an animal project either in the 4H or FFA program are required to attend a Livestock Quality Assurance class every other year and also when they change age groups. These classes offer the youth knowledge on the requirements in the care of their livestock project. The day was broken into two classes which were taught by MSU Extension Beef Special-

ist Meghan Van Emon and Fallon/Carter County Extension Agent Elin Kittelmann. The first class taught by Meghan covered the following topics: how to feed your market steer, proper injection placement, injection site blemishes, and meat quality. The second class was taught by Elin and assisted by 4-H Program Assistant Kodie Olsen, covered how to make a rope halter. Each youth was able to construct their own halter and take it home. Captive deer euthanized; Forsyth couple charged with obstruction Miles City - Two Forsyth-area individuals were charged with obstructing a peace officer after Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks game wardens confiscated a deer that was illegally held captive on their property. FWP warden captain Jack Austin said game wardens learned that an adult mule deer doe was being illegally held captive on private property north of Forsyth. Along with Rosebud County sheriff’s deputies, game wardens served a search warrant on the property Jan. 19, at which time they tranquilized and confiscated the captive deer. The deer was transported to a Miles City veterinarian and euthanized. During the process of confiscating the deer, Austin said, officers arrested the landowners, Daryl and Brenda Duncan, on misdemeanor charges of obstructing a peace officer. Any charges dealing with holding the deer captive are pending. FWP wildlife veterinarian Jennifer Ramsey said that, “for the benefit of all wild animals, folks cannot be allowed to keep them. It is hard for folks to understand that you can’t allow some folks to keep wild animals, and not others. People are more accustomed to thinking about the welfare of the individual animal (like they do with their domestic pets), which is of course important. But they’re not as used to the perspective of having to consider the welfare of the population, which is what we have to do for wildlife.”

Lady Spartans District 3B Tournament Action with the Spartans take third at District basketball tournament By Morgan Miller The Lady Spartans traveled to Colstrip to play in the District 3B Tournament which started Feb. 18. They started the tournament with a victory over Lame Deer, 56-52. The next day, Feb. 19, they played Forsyth and fell short with a score of 39-47. The third day of Districts the Lady Spartans defeated the Lodge Grass Indians 60-58. On championship day, the Lady Spartans played in the consolation game and overpowered the Colstrip Fillies 37-34. The following Monday, Feb. 22, the Lady Spartans challenged St. Labre for second place to advance to the Divisional Tourney, but sadly lost 47-70. Great season, Lady Spartans! The Future Farmers of America (FFA) is an organization that prides itself on integrity and agriculture, however, the FFA is far more than just farming. Whether a person is working on a farm, performing community service, competing, learning, or running a business, FFA assists in the development of lifelong skills in today’s youth. While enjoying continual growth every year, the FFA is the largest youth led organization in America. The FFA’s mission is simple: to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural educa-

tion. February 20-27, 2016, over 629,000 FFA members across the country, including the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, will be celebrating National FFA Week. National FFA Week is an opportunity for FFA members, alumni, and sponsors to advocate for agriculture and the organization that makes it all possible. It’s a time to share with local, state and national audiences what FFA is; along with the impact it has on its members and society every day. Keep an eye out to see how your community celebrates this long lasting tradition, and see what you can do to be involved. National FFA Weeks’ traditions run deep in the history of Montana. During the fifth National FFA Convention in 1933, Montana’s first national

FFA officer, Robert Stewart of Miles City, proposed to have a National FFA Day. Fifteen years later in 1948, it gained more recognition and became known as National FFA Week. It has always been held from Saturday to Saturday the week of February 22. February 22 was chosen to pay respect to George Washington’s birthday, in order to recognize his legacy in farming and agricultural success.

Pull Up Grades Honor Roll Eastern Star Chapter #60 of Baker provided outstanding third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade students with a certificate, a magnet, pizza and a brownie as part of a program to recognize academic achievement. To qualify for the Pull Up Grades (PUGS) honor roll, a student must bring up one class grade one level without going down in any other subject. Students with perfect grades can qualify if they maintain their outstanding performance. Forty-two students qualified for the PUGS honor roll for the third quarter. 4-H members learn valuable lessons at 4-H Foods Festival Fallon County 4-H members gained valuable cooking and communication skills by participating in the 4-H Foods Festival held Feb. 1 at the Fallon County exhibit hall. This event began at 5:30 p.m. with 19 youth presenting their prepared dishes on tables decorated to reflect a certain theme. Each member was questioned by two interviewers. The Tumbling Tumbleweeds 4-H Club hosted this event. Participating youth included Nicole Allerdings, Haylee Barley,

Sayge Barkley, Shianne Beach, Halle Brown, Madison Butori, Breannah Crisler, Mackenzie Crisler, Daley Crawford, Kaitlyn Durden, Madison Durden. Harlee Graham, Kennedy Lyson, Whitney Thielen, Wyatt Thielen, Chloe Tudor, Sophia Tudor, Cooper Oâ€™Connor and Madison Oâ€™Connor. All participants received a blue ribbon and a certificate on which the interviewers wrote encouraging remarks. Everyone who attended this event

was invited to sample the food from a buffet table after the interviews were complete. MINUTES APPROVAL The Commission made and approved the motion to approve the February 1-5, 2016 Commission Minutes. BOARD RESIGNATION The Commission made and approved the motion to accept Michele Gray’s resignation from the Planning Board. RATE OF PAY APPROVALS - The Commission approved and signed the Rate of Pay Approval forms for Paul Christ, Landfill employee, for completing one year of employment and for Andy Fujimori, IT Tech, for completing six months of employment. PURCHASE APPROVAL REQUESTS- The Commission approved purchase requests for dimmable ballasts to be installed in the Commission’s office, electrical work to be done in the Library and a tablet to be purchased for the Parks Department. There were two purchase requests the Commission did not approve due to wanting more information about the need for the purchase. EASTERN PLAINS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORP. (EPEDC) CONTRIBUTIONThe Commission discussed contributing funds to the EPEDC as they have in years past and decided on a contribution of $22,000 for the 2016 fiscal year. 9:45am- Dale Butori, Weed Supervisor, joined the meeting. The Commission and Dale Butori discussed him purchasing a new side by side with grant funds and County funds. Dale’s older side by side will go the Fairgrounds to be used there. 10:00AM ROAD UPDATES Present: Alba Higgins, Shop Foreman; Bobby Wiedmer, Road Supervisor; Shannon Hewson, Brosz Engineering SHOP UPDATES- Alba Higgins gave the Commission updates on the equipment and vehicles that are being serviced or repaired this week. PROJECT UPDATES Bobby Wiedmer told the Commission Diamond J Construction will be seeding the Kramlick Bridge area. Shannon Hewson gave the Commission updates on the Calumet Rd. Bridge, Westmore Bridge and the Dryfork Bridge. Shannon told the Commission he will close out the DNRC Construction Permit for the Primary Spillway Rehabilitation work on the Upper Baker Lake per DNRC’s request. 10:30AM WESTMORE AND DRYFORK BRIDGE CULVERT BID OPENINGS Present: Bobby Wiedmer, Road Supervisor; Shannon Hewson, Brosz Engineering Commissioner Baldwin opened the only bid submitted for the Westmore and Dryfork Bridge Culvert. Forterra (for-

mally known as Cretex) submitted a bid of $360,668.02 for the Dryfork Bridge and a bid of $414,680.40 for the Westmore Bridge. Shannon Hewson said the bid for both culverts is approximately $190,000 more than was expected and 20-30% higher than the culverts cost last year. Shannon said since they were the only bidder he would like to contact them about their bid to find out why the cost came in so high and potentially negotiate the price with them. The Commission made and approved the motion to postpone awarding the bid in order for Shannon Hewson to contact Forterra about the price. 11:00AM BAKER CORRIDOR STUDY/MONTANA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (MDT) FOLLOW UP Present: Shane Mintz, MDT District 4 District Administrator; Jim Frank, MDT District 4 Project Engineer; Steve Heidner, MDT District 4 Project Engineer; Mary Grube, Planner Administrative Assistant The MDT representatives came to discuss the future of the Baker Corridor Study with the Commission. The Commission said a final decision has not been made and the only reason they are considering it is because of the cost. 4-H Shooting Sports

4-H youth traveled to the Black Hills Stock Show Local Fallon and Carter County 4-H youth traveled to the Black Hills Stock Show Youth Day to compete in the Livestock Judging Contest Jan. 30. There were over 115 youth who competed from North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, and other states. After putting in practices before the event with coach and 4-H volunteer leader Ashley Hartman, the youth were nervous and excited but had the basic skills needed to evaluate livestock. Carter County 4-H youth - Tucker Tooke, Heidi LaBree, Cardell Laughery, and Sean Wolenetz - made up the junior team. There were 51 youth in the beginner division and Heidi LaBree received high individual overall with 322 points out of 350. The Fallon County junior team was comprised of Anika Ploeger, Chloe Tudor, Sayge Barkley and Zoie Rost. This was the first time the girls had judged in a bigger contest and

they did a great job. They gained a lot of skills and really improved their judging ability. The Carter County senior team included Heather LaBree, Hannah LaBree, Turner Tooke, and Cameron Wolenetz. If youth are interested in learning more about livestock judging, they can contact the Fallon/Carter County Extension Office or if you are interested in hosting or helping out at a judging practice this spring or summer, please let us know. This provides a great opportunity, through 4-H and FFA, to help youth explore their interests and provide hands-on learning to develop youth to be active participants in society.

Carter County and Fallon County 4-H Shooting Sports youth enjoyed the new Fallon County Indoor Shooting Range Feb. 10 for practice. It was a great experience for the youth and 4-H leaders. It is an impressive facility and has been beneficial for the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. Both Carter County and Fallon County 4-H Shooting Sports programs are looking forward to hosting their annual Shooting Sports Invitational Feb. 20 at the facility. Currently, there are five counties in addition to youth from South Dakota that will be participating.

Carter County Shooting Stars Invitational The Carter County Shooting Stars hosted their third annual Invitational Shoot Feb. 20, 2016 at the Fallon County Indoor Shooting Range. There were 64 4-H youth from Carter, Custer, Fallon, Garfield, Prairie, Powder River, Rosebud/Treasure and Wibaux Counties who participated. Numerous individuals and businesses in Carter and Fallon County offered their support to the youth involved in the Shooting Sports Program. Additionally, Fallon County 4-H Shooting Sports offered their time and knowledge to help with this event. This year was the first year the shoot was held at the Fallon County Indoor Shooting Range. It is an impressive facility and was a great experience for the youth and adults. The late Deb Kirschten was a major contributor to this facility as she volunteered her time to write grants that brought in a total of $43,578.81. A plaque will be hung at the Shooting Range in memory of all her efforts. The event would not have been possible without all the volunteers and community support. The Carter County 4-H Shooting Sports leaders started this invitational three years ago because all the 4-H Shooting Sports competitions were on the western side of the state. They thought there would be an interest and so they hosted one on the eastern side of the state. It turned out there was tremendous support from other 4-H Shooting Sports programs and from the 4-H Center in Bozeman. The Invitational is a great opportunity for 4-H members to practice in a competitive setting before the State Shoot in Bozeman which will be held Mar. 4-6. All youth who competed are a part of their local 4-H Shooting Sports program and have been practicing and learning proper safety procedures throughout the fall and winter. Youth competed in air pistol, air rifle, and archery. The majority of the youth were between 9 and 12 years old, but there

were also some very competitive shooters in the older age divisions. Rocky Maraz with Real-Time Targets came from Story, Wyoming to demonstrate the huckleberry target system that he developed. The youth and adults had a great time shooting at the target and getting advice from Rocky. Carter County Shooting Stars are looking forward to next year’s invitational and growing and improving the 4-H Shooting Sports program in southeastern Montana.
