Wild Rivers Land Trust: Protecting Southern Oregon's Natural Treasures, Hires New Executive Director

Along the rugged and breathtaking southern Oregon coast, a dedicated organization is working tirelessly to ensure the region's irreplaceable lands and waters remain forever wild and abundant.

The Wild Rivers Land Trust (WRLT), spanning from Reedsport to Brookings, operates on the fundamental belief that a thriving environment, a prosperous economy and the unique rural coastal culture are inextricably linked.

This non-profit, charitable organization acts as a guardian for the natural spaces that both peo-

ple and wildlife depend on for clean air, fresh water and healthy habitats across Coos, Curry and southwestern Douglas counties.

The service area encompasses a vast 2.3 million acres.

By forging partnerships with willing landowners, WRLT helps working farms, forests and ranches safeguard their legacies for future generations through various conservation tools.

At its core, a land trust like WRLT acquires land or conservation easements, which are legal agreements that restrict development and protect specific conservation values. These values can range from preserving vital natural habitats and ensuring water quality to maintaining

scenic vistas and guaranteeing land remains available for farming, forestry, or outdoor recreation.

WRLT collaborates closely with landowners, engaging in real estate transactions that sometimes involve purchasing property interests or accepting their donation. Crucially, the Land Trust also diligently stewards and monitors land already under its protection, striving to bring lasting conservation benefits to local communities.

The roots of WRLT trace back to the year 2000, when a group of passionate residents established the Elk River Land Trust with a shared vision of conserv-

Freepenny Friday Highlights Threepenny Theater Co.'s Commitment to Accessible Arts

Local theater enthusiasts are in for a treat this May as Threepenny Theater Co. announces its upcoming Freepenny Friday performance of All in the Timing. Continuing their mission to make performing arts accessible to everyone, the Friday, May 16th show at the Brookings Event Center will offer a unique "pay-what-you-want" ticket initiative.

This special performance underscores the core values of Threepenny Theater Co., a burgeoning nonprofit with a compelling origin story rooted in a passion for community engagement.

The company's journey began in 2023 as an experiment by husband-and-wife co-founders Kat and Jason Liddell. Dipping into their personal savings, the duo staged a one-weekend run of the dark comedy Venus in Fur.

"We joked that if audiences

hated it, we would give up the experiment and never produce another show," Kat Liddell recalled.

Thankfully, the community's response was overwhelmingly positive, with audience members clamoring for more. The enthusiastic reception sparked a period of reflection, leading to the decision to establish a theater company with a focus on affordability and accessibility.

"We finally decided that our best course of action would be to become a nonprofit," Kat Liddell explained.

In 2024, Threepenny Theater Co. officially became a 501(c)3 organization, navigating the paperwork and establishing a board of directors. Their first full season culminated with the comedy Sylvia in November 2024, followed by their inaugural teen production, Escape Room, this past March.

Indian Creek Hatchery Bounces Back After Devastating Storm

The Indian Creek Hatchery, a vital facility on the Rogue River dedicated to bolstering fall Chinook salmon populations, is facing a significant recovery effort after an unprecedented storm caused widespread damage. Despite the destruction, the hatchery's fish were saved thanks to the swift actions of volunteers and partner organizations. Since 1997, the Indian Creek program has been strategically operating to support both commercial and sport fishing harvests of fall Chinook while carefully minimizing any negative effects on wild fish populations, particularly the threatened Southern Oregon Northern California Coast (SONCC) Coho Salmon. Before this focused approach, the hatchery served as a rehabilitation program for the lower Rogue fall Chinook population.

The program's multi-faceted goals include providing adult Chinook for ocean and lower Rogue River fisheries, thereby

supporting crucial economic and cultural values tied to historic salmon fishing. It also helps to alleviate pressure on fisheries targeting listed or candidate species; furthermore, the hatchery actively engages in public education through the Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP), raising awareness among students and the community about

salmon biology and their habitat needs.

To minimize risks to wild populations, the hatchery employs careful brood collection, rearing and release strategies. Returning adult Chinook are guided by a temporary weir into a ladder at the hatchery. Additionally, naturally

The payments are supported by the timber harvested from public lands and

“The BLM is working to protect our national and economic security, as directed in President Trump’s order, by immediately expanding American timber production,” BLM Oregon/Washington State Director Barry Bushue said. “We manage more than 2.4 million acres of some of the world’s most productive forests in western Oregon, and are committed to supplying a reliable, secure, and resilient domestic supply of timber, while providing jobs and other support to local communities through timber production.”

The BLM manages this area, referred to as O&C and CBWR lands, as well as the funds generated from timber harvests in accordance with two laws. The Oregon and California Railroad and Coos Bay Wagon Road Grant Lands Grant Act of 1937 directs revenue from O&C Lands is shared between the U.S. Treasury and 18 western Oregon counties. The Coos Bay Wagon Road Act of 1939 directs revenue from CBWR Lands be paid in-lieu of tax payments to Coos and Douglas counties.

The timber harvesting funding provides local communities with the means to construct new county buildings; develop fairgrounds and museums; support libraries, schools, and jails; and build flood-control dams and reservoirs, according to the BLM.

Beyond these direct payments to counties, the BLM timber program supports approximately 2,000 local jobs and generates

ing the land along the Elk River. Their initial goals was to involve communities in preserving the natural world for a healthier, more sustainable planet and remains the driving force behind the organization today.

Recognizing the growing need for their services, the land trust expanded its reach in 2014 and 2018, bringing its conservation expertise to more people and communities along the southern Oregon coast.

A significant milestone for the organization came in August 2019, when WRLT achieved full accreditation through the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, a nationally recognized body that rigorously reviews land trust operations.

The distinction, held by just over four-hundred land trusts nationwide, has not only strengthened WRLT's internal practices but has also fostered new partnerships and facilitated further land acquisitions.

Accreditation provides landowners, donors, conservation partners and the wider community with the assurance that Wild Rivers Land Trust operates under the highest standards of land conservation.

Looking to the future, the Wild Rivers Land Trust envisions a southern Oregon coast defined by clean water, abundant salmon runs, sustainable working lands and thriving rural communities. Its mission is to conserve and sustain the natural, scenic and working lands as well as lands of historic, cultural, or archaeological value, through collaborative efforts with communities and landowners along the Wild Rivers Coast.

The generosity of donors is the lifeblood of the Wild Rivers Land Trust's conservation work. In return for this support, WRLT provides the assurance that the region's natural wonders will endure for generations to come, working to instill a shared passion and care for the land and waters within the communities it serves.

In recent news, the Wild Rivers Land Trust announced the appointment of Amy Knapp Pettit as its new Executive Director.

Pettit emerged as the top candidate from a strong pool of applicants, bringing with her two decades of experience in agriculture and land conservation as well as deep roots in the southern Oregon coast.

Raised in Curry County on the Knapp Ranch in Langlois, Pettit holds an Agricultural Business Management degree from Oregon State University.

Her career has taken her to Alaska, where she managed the Marketing and Development team for the State of Alaska Division of Agriculture for ten years before becoming the Executive Director of the Alaska Farmland Trust in 2015. Under her leadership, the Farmland Trust experienced significant growth, doubling its protected areas and establishing strong relationships with major foundations.

In March 2022, Pettit was appointed as the State Executive Director for the

of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. Lori Pepsis, a founding board member and performer with a background in theater education, has been a consistent presence on stage. Chloé Rosenthal, another board member with professional acting experience in Los Angeles, will also be returning to perform in the Shakespeare production.

Play selections are currently being made by the board of directors, while also incorporating suggestions from the executive director, volunteers and members of the audience. Typically, Threepenny stages three to four regular season productions annually, alongside occasional special events and fundraisers for other community groups.

Audition announcements are consistently posted on Threepenny's website and social media platforms. While scripts are not typically available far in advance, audition sides are often provided upon request. Aspiring performers are encouraged to research the plays they are auditioning for to enhance their preparation.

With their upcoming

Freepenny Friday performance, Threepenny Theater Co. continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering a vibrant and accessible arts scene in the Brookings-Harbor area, proving that passion and community spirit can create meaningful theatrical experiences for all.

The next play, All in the Timing opens May 9th and will run for two weekends on the following days and times: Fridays at 7 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Whether you're a fan of clever wordplay or an enthusiast of thought-provoking comedy, All in the Timing promises an unforgettable evening of absurd and witty humor.

The play will be held at the Brookings Event Center, located between Feather Your Nest and Wild Hare Barber & Tattoo.

Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door on the day of the performance. The box office doors open 30 minutes before the start of each performance.

me," Pettit said.

The Wild Rivers Land Trust board and staff express their confidence that Pettit's connection to the region, her extensive knowledge of land conservation, her demonstrated fundraising abilities and her passionate leadership style make her the ideal person to lead the organization into the future.

The organization would also like to extend its sincere gratitude to the former Executive Director Ann Schmierer for her invaluable service as interim executive director during the recent transition.

produced Chinook are collected from the lower Rogue River using various methods like beach seines and tangle nets. Broodstock collection occurs throughout the fall Chinook run to maintain genetic diversity and while the focus is on lower Rogue fish, similar-timing Applegate and Illinois River Chinook.

Importantly, collection activities cease if more than three wild Coho are captured in a single day.

Rearing and release protocols prioritize minimizing ecological interactions with wild fish. Juvenile salmon, known as smolts, are released incrementally between July and September in the Rogue River estuary to expedite their migration to the sea.

Since 2007, smolts have been mass marked with an adipose fin-clip, allowing for better monitoring and broodstock selection. The marking rate averages eighty-five percent annually. Excess unfed fry, baby fish that rely on their yolk sacks for nutrition, are released into isolated water bodies or Euchre Creek, where no independent fall Chinook or Coho populations exist, further reducing potential impacts.

Recently, the hatchery's long-standing operations faced a major setback when a severe storm did major damage. The deluge wiped out a fifty-foot access bridge to the water intake, the road leading to it and the spring line that supplies crucial water to the facility. The displaced bridge created a dam, filling the fish ladder and brood tank with four feet of silt. Adding to the crisis, the backup pump also failed.

Faced with no backup water source, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) and a dedicated team of volunteers, including members of the Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) and Curry Anadromous Fishermen (CAF), worked tirelessly to relocate the fish to the Elk River Fish Hatchery. STEP volunteers played a critical role in maintaining water

flow using gas pumps and ensuring the safe transfer of the fish.

The Indian Creek Hatchery is a collaborative effort involving CAF, ODFW, STEP, the people of Central Curry County, and the Knox Family, all working towards increasing fall Chinook salmon numbers in local streams. CAF, a non-profit organization based in Gold Beach at the mouth of the Rogue River, is a key partner in this endeavor as part of the statewide STEP volunteer program.

Looking ahead, the immediate restoration priorities include stabilizing and repairing erosion on the access road, reconstructing pipe crossings for water intake, removing the accumulated sediment, replacing the bridge access and rerouting the spring line for fish incubation.

Despite the significant damage, the fact that no fish were lost is a testament to the preparedness of the hatchery staff and the rapid response of volunteers.

While the primary water supply initially remained intact, it eventually failed due to debris impact, underscoring the severity of the storm.

Annually, the Indian Creek Hatchery cultivates and releases approximately 80,000 to 100,000 juvenile salmon into the Rogue River. Beyond this, the program actively educates the community about their processes and the individuals involved.

The efforts of roughly one-hundred fifty volunteers, primarily from Curry Anadromous Fishermen, contribute an average of three-thousand five-hundred hours annually to fish culture, broodstock collection, fundraising and educational events. These volunteers also provide crucial monetary support through various means.

While the road to full recovery will be challenging, the dedication of the volunteers and partner organizations provides a strong foundation for the Indian Creek Hatchery to continue its vital work in supporting salmon populations and the communities that depend on them.

2025 Oregon ocean salmon seasons adopted

News release

NEWPORT, Ore – The Pacific Fisheries Management Council (PFMC) finalized the 2025 ocean salmon seasons including ocean waters off Oregon yesterday.

Recommended salmon seasons are not official until final approval by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce (expected by May 16), and after adoption by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission on April 18 for waters within three nautical miles of shore.

Recreational and commercial fishing opportunity varies by area and time. The recreational all-salmon except coho season opened from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain on March 15 and Chinook retention will be allowed through mid-July and during September and October. However, from June 7 onward, when Chinook retention is allowed, anglers may keep only one Chinook as part of the two salmon per day bag limit. For the month of October, the daily bag limit is reduced to one salmon and the open area will be

limited to shoreward of the 40-fathom management line.

From Humbug Mountain to the OR/CA border, the Chinook retention period is open mid-May through early June and reopens the very end of June through mid-July. During both periods, the daily bag limit is two salmon, though only one may be a Chinook in the latter opener.

From Cape Falcon to the OR/CA border, mark-selective coho retention is allowed early June through late August or until the marked coho quota of 44,000 is reached. For the month of September, from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain, an all-salmon season will occur with a 30,000 non-marked-selective coho quota.

Oregon ocean commercial salmon fisheries from Cape Falcon to Humbug Mountain will continue through the end of May and again from September through the end of October, with a non-mark-selective coho fishery and a 7,500 coho quota during the month of September. From Cape Falcon to the Heceta

Bank management line, the fishery will be open in the latter parts of June and July for all salmon except coho. The area between Humbug Mountain and the OR/CA border will be open for the last two weeks of April only.

Conservation concerns based on the low forecasts for both Sacramento and Klamath River fall Chinook salmon stocks were the primary constraints on Chinook fisheries south of Cape Falcon, Oregon. More abundant Columbia Basin hatchery coho salmon and Oregon Coastal natural coho abundances will allow for good fishing opportunities this year. The Columbia Basin hatchery stock is forecast to be about 70 percent of last year’s actual return but 125 percent above the 2024 pre-season forecast. Federally listed lower Columbia River coho are forecast to be less abundant compared to the 2024 pre-season forecast, but still above recent historical average. The Oregon Coastal natural coho stock forecast is the largest since 2012.

I have been a resident of the BrookingsHarbor area for over 30 years, and have spent all of them as a library volunteer, working to make it safe and strong. And, we need to keep it that way. Throughout the United States there is a push to change library rules eliminating certain books and not allowing certain groups of people to use library facilities because they don’t fit the current political push. That’s just wrong! Our library not only provides a terrific selection of books, but is a wonderful meeting place for our community.

Of course I’m an avid reader, and I repay that privilege by helping with the Friends of Library book sale, with special children’s programs, and making solid decisions as a board member since 2001.

Our Board has dealt with COVID, with homeless, with a leaky roof, and with gutting and restructuring the library to make it more workable and enjoyable for every-one, I have been there as Chair of the board of directors year after year. If you love our library ...

Re-elect Pat Piper and Cora Rose to keep our library free.

Curry County Medication Take Back Events

Press release

Curry County Prevention is proud to announce a continuous initiative to help residents safely dispose of unused, leftover and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Curry County Prevention, partnered with the Drug Take-Back Solutions Foundation, managed by Inmar Intelligence, is offering people a convenient way to dispose of unwanted or outdated medications through their mail-back program. People can obtain postage-paid envelopes, at one of the events, to securely dispose of medications from the comfort of their homes.

The program aims to reduce the risks associated with unused medications, which can pose dangers to children, teens and adults. Unused medications are not only a source of misuse, but can also harm the environment.

Flushing medications

down the toilet is not a safe disposal method as it can introduce traces of drugs into community water supplies. This mail-back program provides a simple and sustainable alternative: Pick up postage-paid envelopes at a Curry County Take Back event. Place unused or expired medications in the envelope from the comfort of your home.

• Seal the envelope and drop it in the mail.

All medications sent through the program are securely incinerated upon receipt; however, some items, such as empty injector products and needles, are not eligible for disposal through the envelopes.

Residents can order inhaler/auto-injector specific disposal envelopes by visiting https://SafeMedicineDrop.com. Inmar

Intelligence has a proven track record of safely handling drug returns for pharmacies, hospitals and law enforcement agen-

cies across the U.S. The initiative is fully funded by drug manufacturers, ensuring accessibility for all residents. Different events are scheduled throughout Curry County with the introduction of the new Prescription Take-Back bags.

The next event for a pop up Take Back will be on Tuesday April 29th, which is following the National Drug Take Back Day. A table will be set up at Tree Wizard Gallery at 2200 Jackson Street in Port Orford from 9:30 a.m. to11:00 a.m., and at the Brookings Youth Resource Office at 517 Railroad from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and at the Curry County Juvenile Department 29821 Colvin Street in Gold Beach from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more log onto: https://www.currycountyprevention.com/events/ prescription-take-backevent.
