Pioneer Editor bmartin@countrymedia.net A two-vehicle collision on Highway 85 sent one person to the hospital shortly before 7 p.m. Jan. 15 in Bowman County. The male driver of a white Chevrolet Trailblazer was transported via Bowman Ambulance to Southwest Healthcare Services after a black Dodge Ram crashed into the vehicle at the intersection of Highway 85 and 86th Street near the El-Vu Motel in Bowman County, according to police on the scene. The driver of the vehicle, Patricia Washington, 48, of Mesa, Ariz., did not suffer lifethreatening injuries, according to Bowman County Sheriff’s Deputy Frank Eberle. The driver of the pickup truck, Mason Davis, 24, of Ogden, Utah, had no apparent injury and declined treatment,

‘It’s pretty official,’ Alco manager says; Shopko stays mum on official word By Bryce Martin
Pioneer Editor bmartin@countrymedia.net The latest guessing game in Bowman was which retailer would take over Alco’s location, ever since it made public that it was closing its doors. The answer: Shopko. Though it has not yet been made official by the company’s headquarters, “it’s pretty much official,” said Scott Sola, general manager of Alco in Bowman. Teran Doerr, executive director of the Bowman County Development Corp., said she also heard word that Shopko was coming to Bowman.
Doerr repeated that it was not yet made official. “There are a lot of legal technicalities that need to be ironed out before anything is made public at this point,” Michelle Hansen, spokesperson for Shopko Stores Operating Co. LLC., told the Pioneer on Tuesday. Hansen indicated there was no further information. Shopko is advertising for 14 available positions—from sales to managerial positions—in Bowman on the North Dakota job service website, www.JobsND.com. It was a brazen indication of the retailer’s interest in the area. Hansen said she was not aware the company was

For those wanting to shop local, the already few amount of choices was narrowed down by one. People in the community and in the surrounding areas took to social media to vent their frustration and even suggested some possibilities for certain stores that should consider replacing Alco. Among those suggestions was Runnings, a popular home and farm goods retailer, Family Dollar, which

Pioneer Editor bmartin@countrymedia.net The U.S. Air Force announced Jan. 16 that it signed a record of decision regarding the expansion of the Powder River Training Area at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, S.D., effectively offering its final decision on the project. According to the signed document, the Air Force selected “Modified Alternative A” as the plan for expansion. “It was what they wanted all along, so we’re still stuck with the area over us, both low and high,” said Rodney Schaaf, president of the Bowman Coun-

Eberle said. Eberle said he suspected the collision to be the result of “operator error.” A crash report from the Bowman Police Department indicated Davis was distracted by external factors. According to the report, Davis failed to yield before entering onto Highway 85. Davis struck Washington’s vehicle as it traveled southbound on the highway. Police suspected Davis was driving under the influence, according to the report. He was given a Breathalyzer test that indicated his blood alcohol content was zero. Davis was issued two citations, for care required and failure to yield to the right-ofway. The Bowman Police Department was assisted by the Bowman County Sheriff’s Office at the scene. The new training complex is expected to be established in the spring or summer. Members of the Bowman County Airport Authority publicly voiced opposition to the plan from the start and most recently attended a conference call meeting between the Bowman County Board of Commissioners and Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s representative to reiterate the negative points of expanding the training area over southwest North Dakota.
