Prizegiving starts at 6.30pm
You do not need to be a Cossie Club member to attend. All CSFC members and guests welcome. Why not come early and take advantage of the great food on offer at the Cossie Club.
Important Note: if you intend to have a meal before the meeting it would pay to book to avoid disappointment as the restaurant is very popular and often full.

We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.
They have a reputation for good quality workmanship, honesty and reliability. The onsite technicians are experts in Mercury, Etech, Evinrude & Johnson servicing and repairs as well as Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda. They can also fit new or used outboard engines and do trailer repairs, springs, winches and rollers.

Starting this season there will be two trevally trophies. The current trophy will still be for the largest trevally and there will be an additional trophy for the largest trevally in club waters. So make sure that if you weight a trevally you tell the weighmaster where it was caught.
A draw was held at our recent AGM for the spaces on our sponsors grid. This years grid can be found at the end of the newsletter. A copy without logos can be found here which may be easier to find your position on. We would like to say a huge thank you to all our grid sponsors for their support to the club. Do remember to note which grid square your catch comes from when coming to get it weighed.
We have heard of a couple of 20lb snapper from the harbour this month. We even have a photo of one of them, so at least one definitely happened (not from a club member unfortunately). The harbour seems to be fishing well now, a great time to get out there.
The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council invites members to participate in our Cookbook Competition by submitting your most delicious and creative seafood recipes. By taking part in this competition, you'll be supporting our Youth Ocean Trust, as the proceeds from the cookbook sales will contribute to nurturing the next generation of marine enthusiasts. Additionally, we need your imaginative flair in crafting a title for our cookbook. We want a name that captures the essence of our vibrant fishing community and the diverse flavours that we're fortunate to have right on our back doorstep. Your idea could become the iconic cover of this culinary masterpiece!
And that's not all—every entry will automatically enter the draw to win a remarkable three-generation guaranteed Ironclad Legacy Pan valued at $279.
To participate, visit our website and click on 'news' or simply follow this link:

Online merchandise sales will not be available between 27th July and 4th October.
After a great comp last year this competition is back again, but with a brand new format. Instead of just one days fishing the competition will run from the 4th of November right up to the 26th of November. This should give everyone a chance to get out and fish the competition at some time. You can fish as many, or as few, days as you like. This will be a length based competition, so entries will be by submitting photos of your catch on an approved measuring mat. The prizegiving will be held at our November club meeting on the 29th November. This competition will only be open to Counties Sport Fishing Club members.
Newsletters, back to January 2018, are available online here. They have been uploaded in higher resolution then the old pdf versions were emailed out in, so the pictures especially should be better quality.
We’re always looking for items to include, so if you have a fishing report, some photos, or just a good story to tell please drop me an email on kevin@nzsteele.com

Here are some highlights from this months NZSFC club report.
An application for a 2-year temporary closure under Section 186A was submitted to FNZ on August 21st by Motairehe Marae Trust. NZSFC, LegaSea and New Zealand Angling and Casting Association have opposed this after feedback from clubs. Concerns raised by Clubs adjacent to this requested closure include:
1. Denial of Public Access: The closure could deny public access to the area.
2. Impact on Fishing Effort: Without a plan to reduce catch limits, this closure may displace existing fishing efforts into other areas, affecting Hauraki Gulf, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, and East Northland.
3. Lack of Depletion Address: The closure does not address depletion issues.
4. Possible Opposition: It is anticipated that other groups and commercial fishers may oppose this application, though no feedback has been received from FNZ yet
In August, Jeff Romeril issued an email to all Clubs from the NZMRF, he will also report to the AGM the following:
The New Zealand Marine Research Foundation plays a vital role in supporting marine research for the benefit of recreational fishers. Established by the NZSFC in the early '90s, it officially began its work in 1999. Initially funded at 50 cents per member per year, contributions have since grown to $2 for adults and $1 for juniors. The foundation, led by trustees with strong ties to NZSFC, has undertaken significant projects. Notable achievements include long-term satellite tagging of marlin, fish welfare research that influenced government decisions on animal welfare, and the creation of a valuable recreational fishing reference document. Currently, they're considering research on "mushy fish" (snapper) and assisting with artificial reef creation.
NZSFC clubs' donations are crucial for the foundation's operations. This funding largely determines the effectiveness of NZMRF. The foundation reports annually to the NZSFC AGM, and these donations are a substantial contribution. NZSFC's support through its
Administration Officer, Helen Pastor, is also greatly appreciated. Despite challenges, including the impact of COVID-19, NZMRF has built a strong financial reserve and completed various projects. They're now focusing on studying mushy snapper and considering creating artificial reefs from aquaculture shell waste. Regarding trustees, there have been changes, with new additions of Rick Pollock and Pete Saul following the resignation of John Rae and Dr Peter Davies. There are plans for further expansion in the future. The NZMRF is reliant on NZSFC donations to conduct valuable research in the interests of recreational fishers.
Notable developments in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park include:
1. Approval of Fisheries Plan: The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park Fisheries Plan has been approved.
2. Marine Protection Bill: The Hauraki Gulf/Tikapa Moana Marine Protection Bill, supporting 19 new MPAs, has been introduced into Parliament and referred to the Environment Select Committee. Submissions will likely be called for around the end of 2023.
The final Fisheries Industry Transformation Plan was released on August 7th. NZSFC issued a press release on August 8th, titled "Government Fishing Plan Ignores Public Outrage." https://legasea.co.nz/2023/08/08/government-fishing-plan-ignores-public-outrage/
LENGTH RECORDS we need a clear photo of the fish on the approved measure, which are available for $25. The photo must be of the whole fish lying on its side with the mouth touching the head of the measure. We will need details of where it was caught and the name of the angler.
