Next Meeting Wednesday 28th May
You do not need to be a Cossie Club member to attend. All CSFC members and guests welcome.
Why not come early and take advantage of the great food on offer at the Cossie Club.
Important Note: if you intend to have a meal before the meeting it would pay to book to avoid disappointment as the restaurant is very popular and often full.

We are a family friendly West coast club based in Waiuku, just south of Auckland. With around 1000 members, trailer boats make up the majority of our fleet. Celebrating fishing of all kinds, from the humble Gurnard to the mighty Broadbill. Club waters span from Raglan north head to Kaipara south head and include the Manukau harbour and Waikato river.
This years AGM will be held on the 27th of August at the Cossie club. More details closer to the day, but put the date in your diary.
Youth Nationals are currently underway and its great to see some of our younger members getting to grips with light line fishing. Brock Johnston and Indi Harper have both been out fishing 1kg line -and both catching some nice fish as well.
More than 25,000 people took the time to write a submission opposing the Fisheries Act amendments. That's massive. And it's proof that every day New Zealanders care deeply about the health of our ocean and the future of our fisheries.
Newsletters, back to January 2018, are available online here. They have been uploaded in higher resolution then the old pdf versions were emailed out in, so the pictures especially should be better quality.
We’re always looking for items to include, so if you have a fishing report, some photos, or just a good story to tell please drop me an email on kevin@nzsteele.com
At our last club meeting we were joined by representatives from Waiuku Coastguard. These guys do an amazing job looking out for all of us whenever we are out on the water. They are currently looking for some new volunteers, especially if you can be available during the week. This is a great opportunity to help others out at sea and also receive some of the best maritime training available.
Waiuku Coastguard seeks passionate local boaties who want to contribute to our Saving Lives at Sea mission. Ideally, we are looking for Volunteers based in or around Waiuku or within a 12-minute drive of our base at Massey Park and who have some daytime availability to cover during weekdays. WFH or shiftwork.
Anyone over 16 (with parental agreement if under 18) can volunteer. We train every Tuesday night from 7pm to about 9:30pm and have a unit meeting on the first Tuesday of the Month at 7:30pm at the base. We also operate a duty crew once every three weeks, and the duty crew is given preference for call-outs over weekends and evenings unless it is an urgent call out then it is first to base.
All training is provided free of charge, right from recruit through to being a Skipper.
If anyone is interested, they can email waiuku.recruitment@coastguard.nz or join us on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm for our unit meeting.

Counties Sport Fishing Club are affiliated to the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council (NZSFC) and they are affiliated to the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA). The IGFA are an international body who set the rules for gamefishing around the world, and any fish has to be caught under these rules to be eligible for a world record. We also fish all our major competitions under IGFA rules, so you must abide by these rules for any fish you catch to be eligible in our competitions. We’ll be highlighting some of these rules each month in the newsletter and on our social media.
This month we are looking at hooks. The images show what is and what is not legal under IGFA rules.
BE AWARE, not all commercially available fishing rigs and jigs are IGFA legal. Make sure that you check any tackle you use conforms to the rules below to avoid any risk of getting a fish disqualified.
All the information about IGFA rules can be found in the Sport Fishing Yearbook.

Welcome to the Pod and Reel podcast, presented by the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council, a national body with over 50 affiliated clubs across New Zealand, and over 37,000 members. Since 1957, NZSFC has focussed on setting standards for responsible fishing practices, collating records, organising events like the Nationals, and supporting its affiliated fishing clubs. This podcast dives deep into the history, the people, and the clubs that make up our fishing community. We’ll explore the highs and lows of fishing and learn from mistakes made, striving to be better, safer, and smarter when we interact with the water. With 15,000 kilometres of coastline, New Zealand’s fishing history is rich with stories of the tussle between us and the sea.
Join us as we delve into these topics and more on the Pod and Reel podcast, your gateway to the world of all things fishing in New Zealand.
