NodoubtyouallsawthefootagelastDecemberoftheboatflippingonthebaratRaglan,itwaswidelycirculated onlineandonthenews.Theskipperlaunchedinlessthanidealconditionsandafterhittingawavelaunched theboatintotheair,itlandedonitssideandwaslaterwashedashorebadlydamaged.All3peopleonboard survivedwithoutanyseriousinjury.AsaresultoftheincidentWaikatoRegionalCouncillaidchargesagainst theskipperundertheMaritimeTransportActofcausingunnecessarydanger.Hewasfoundguiltyandfined $900,thecourtnotingthathehadalreadydonated$1000toCoastguardaftertheincident.
“Thisincidentcouldeasilyhaveresultedinthreefatalities,”thecouncil’sregional compliancemanagerPatrickLynchsaid.Coastguardrecordsshowingtheskipper hadpreviouslyenteredtheseaatManuBay154times.“Heisclearlyvery experienced,butthisincidentshowsthatcomplacencycanhavedireresultsina maritimesetting.”
Followingthefatalincidentintheharbourlastyearwhenamotherandhersontragicallydiedtheskipperof theboathasbeenchargedwithmanslaughter.HehaspleadednotguiltyandatrialdatehasbeensetforJuly 2024.
Mostofyouwillnodoubtbeawarethatwehave beenhavingproblemswithchannel5forsome timenow.Thiswascausedbyanotherradio operator,althoughtheywereonadifferent frequencytherewereissueswithinterference. BrianLittlewoodhasbeenworkinghardforusto tryandsortouttheseissues.Thegoodnewsis thatchannel5seemedtobeworkingwellduring theGrunterHunter.Therearesomedetailsto finalise,buthopefullyweshouldhavechannel5 backreadyforthenewseason.
