Previous Newsletters

Brock Johnston continues his quest for sharks. This time with a pending junior world record for Tope on 10kg line.

Newsletters, back to January 2018, are available online here. They have been uploaded in higher resolution then the old pdf versions were emailed out in, so the pictures especially should be better quality.

NZSFC Youth Committee

The New Zealand Sports Fishing Council is excited to announce the formation of a new age category to develop youth activities within the NZSFC and Clubs –This is aimed at fostering the next generation of leaders within our community. For the last 3 years, NZSFC have had a group from our Clubs operating as the Junior Committee (for members up to 17 years old). This committee has been instrumental in guiding the youth program, specifically the rules and nature of the inaugural Youth Nationals in 2022.

Creation of the 17-24 Year Old NZSFC Youth Committee

Going forward, while maintaining the Junior Committee (up to 17 years old), we are establishing an additional group for 17-24 year olds – to aid in the further development of the NZSFC youth program in parallel with the Junior Committee. This also provide the opportunity forthose who want to stay on and continue to be involved.

We are reaching out to our affiliated clubs and club members to help us identify passionate and dedicated young individuals aged 17-24 who would be excellent candidates for this committee.

The Youth Committee will provide a unique opportunity for young members to gain leadership experience, develop new skills, and contribute to meaningful projects such as ocean-to-plate programs and youth fishing camps. By participating in this initiative, they will not only help shape the future of the NZSFC but also be well-prepared to take on leadership roles within their own clubs.

As their first task, the new committee will be responsible for coming up with their own name, allowing them to have a sense of ownership and creativity right from the start.

We believe that by investing in our youth, we are securing the future of sports fishing in New Zealand, by enabling them to have a voice at this level. We encourage you to share the application with young members who demonstrate a strong commitment to fishing, environmental conservation, and community involvement.

Interested 17-24 year olds are encouraged to apply here: https://forms.gle/QcR5e7M2hMaH8CsK7

Thank you for supporting this important initiative. Together, we can inspire and empower the next generation of sports fishing leaders. Should you wish to gain further information, feel free to email us.

E.P.I.R.B Vs P.L.B

As you are all no doubt aware the most important thing if there is an emergency while you are out on your boat and you need help is being able to summon that help. Depending on your situation you may be able to call Coastguard on the radio, but if you find yourself out of the boat or the electrics on the boat are not working you need a backup plan. A mobile phone in a waterproof case is always a good idea, as is a waterproof handheld VHF. Flares are also important as they can alert local boats to your distress. One of the best things that you can have is some way of summoning help and letting the authorities know exactly where you are.

Until quite recently the standard piece of equipment for this purpose was the EPIRB (emergency position-indicating radiobeacon). These are usually mounted somewhere on the boat in a readily accessible position. More recently there is an alternative to the EPIRB, the PLB (personal location beacon). A PLB performs exactly the same task as an EPIRB, but it is much more compact and can easily be carried on your person. It can also be used on land as well, on hiking or hunting trips for example. A PLB will transmit an emergency signal for 12 hours, while the EPRIB works for 24 hours -but it is very unlikely that you will be fishing somewhere more than 12 hours away from help.

Because a PLB can be clipped onto your lifejacket it is always with you and no matter how quickly things go wrong, and it can go wrong very quickly, you don’t have to worry about finding your EPIRB in an emergency. Our local Coastguard report that they have never been on a call out where they were notified by an EPIRB being activated. They strongly recommend using a PLB and keeping it fastened onto your life jacket.

Come along to this months club meeting where Counties Marine will have some great deals available on PLB’s.

Committee Nominations

Our annual general meeting takes place on the 28th August and one of the things that happens at the meeting is that the committee for the next year are voted in. Any club member can stand for election to the committee and we would particularly welcome applications from some of our younger members. The committee meets once a month, on the second Wednesday at the Cossie club. Meetings are generally only an hour or so and start at 7.30.

If you think that you have something to offer to the club, or you have some great ideas for things that we should be doing but are not then please think about joining the committee to make them happen.

All you need to do is get a member to propose you and one to second you and hand the application in at the AGM. If you would like to know more beforehand then there is a list of current committee members in the newsletter, contact someone you know and they can answer any questions you may have.
