Important Note: if you intend to have a meal before the meeting it would pay to book to avoid disappointment as the restaurant is very popular and often full.

Unfortunately, due to the weather refusing to co-operate with us on any of the three days planned for this competition we had to cancel. Safety is the number one consideration and the decision was that conditions were far from ideal. There may be a chance to reschedule this competition for later in the season, watch our facebook page for notifications.
There was some great fishing going on for Counties in this years Nationals. As well as the big gamefish there was also lots of action in the light line categories. As I write this the results have not yet been confirmed, but it looks like we have done extremely well this year. There should be Counties wins in several sections and even a NZ junior record (subject to confirmation by NZSFC). Congratulations to everyone who ended up in the points and a huge thank you to every club member who was out there.
There will be a boat raffle at this years Classic again, here’s Harvey from Allenco boats hard at work on this years prize. Looks like it’s going to be another great boat, that one very lucky winner will be taking home.
The weighmasters get some odd fish come across the scales sometimes, and this one is definately one of the more strange ones.
Newsletters, back to January 2018, are available online here. They have been uploaded in higher resolution then the old pdf versions were emailed out in, so the pictures especially should be better quality.
We’re always looking for items to include, so if you have a fishing report, some photos, or just a good story to tell please drop me an email on kevin@nzsteele.com
Our marine environment and the management of our fisheries is at crisis point.
In 1986 the Government introduced the Quota Management System as a way to halt the dangerous depletion of our fish stocks.
Unfortunately the experiment just hasn’t worked.
Thirty years later we have not achieved the goals of resource sustainability and economic efficiency promised by the introduction of the QMS.
Now, there is widespread concern about declining fish stocks and biodiversity loss in our marine environment. And, fish quotas are being accumulated to protect market share. This means a few large businesses are hauling in the profits from using our fish stocks at the expense of our environment and regional businesses. For a Government that promotes a reputation of fairness and well-being, the current system makes no sense at all.
Problems of the current system include:
1. The Quota Management System has created a powerful lobby of commercial interests that block initiatives to rebuild depleted fish stocks.
2. The QMS permits environmentally damaging fishing methods. These include dredging and bottom-trawling in inshore waters and sensitive nursery areas.
3. Dumping of unwanted fish and the unnecessary deaths of precious birds and marine mammals.
4. Small scale commercial fishers do not receive a reasonable return for their efforts. This encourages low cost, bulk harvesting of fish.
5. Inadequate funding for effective research, monitoring and policing of commercial fishing.
6. No resource rental applies to commercial catch, this leads to overfishing of inshore fish stocks. Now there is not enough kaimoana available in areas traditionally fished by families.
There is a solution
Rescue Fish is a holistic solution to address depleted fish stocks and biodiversity loss. Effective implementation of the Rescue Fish policy will make our marine environment more productive. It’s critical we restore abundance and fairness to the management of our fisheries so generations to come have access to this collective natural resource.
