Message from the General Chair I want to express my joy with contributions to the WCCSETE2016 – II World Congress on Computer Science, Engineering and Technology Education. This edition we could count with the hard work of our members, professionals and volunteers who have organized this exceptional event with the goal to provide participants the best congress experience ever. We also have organized social and cultural events of high quality besides the technical sessions full of excellence. The different congress events benefit our scientific and professional community and promote a wonderful time among our group members of participants. The congress venue is outstanding a place to visit and enjoy - the city of Castelo Branco that is internationally known for embroidered quilts made by hand, the regional cheese and the olive oil and wine. Lying between the rural landscapes of the center of the country, this beautiful town also displays typical architecture, secular monuments and medieval churches - a very attractive destination for curious travelers. WCCSETE offers the possibility of updating and revisiting classical concepts and cutting edge useful information in Computer Science, Engineering and Technology Education. Participants of WCCSETE2016 have the opportunity to discuss the latest improvements as well as to promote research and development in the core areas. The theme of this edition is: "Improving Computer Science, Engineering and Technology Education by Industry-University Interactions" It aims to provide participants with up-to-date information in Computer Science, Engineering and Technology Education fields, counting with the presence of experts from across the globe. WCCSETE2016 happens in Castelo Branco, Portugal the first capital of Brazil, and the host Institution is Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB). We are proud to organize this congress in such institution that has opened its door and providing the excellent organizing committee that has been working restless to make of this another successful congress. Message from the Technical Program Chair As the Technical Program Committee, I want to express how we are glad that you have accepted our invitation to join this edition of WCCSETE - World Congress on Computer Science, Engineering and Technology Education. This edition of WCCSETE counts with the priceless work of the board and local committee who have prepared an exciting program as well as featuring worldrenowned speakers; the congress includes also numerous interactive elements involving the audience. As usual WCCSETE provides a unique opportunity for researchers and scientists to present their scientific studies, during the technical sessions. The collaborations of authors are of great value and surely enlighten the event of top quality. It is always important to point out the importance of face-to-face exchange of ideas and researches among peers, due to the opportunities of collaborative work that can occur. Besides scientific publication papers presentations are also of great importance for the enhancement of creative and dynamic science and technology development. We have to thank indeed the local committee in the person of Prof. José Carlos Metrôlho, director of ESTCB - School of Engineering of Castelo Branco, and Prof. José Salvado, former chair of the IEEE Education Society Chapter Portugal Section for the great work and efforts to make this WCCSETE edition a success. Message from the Local Chairs

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the WCCSETE’16 – World Congress on Computer Science, Engineering and Technology Education, to be held in Castelo Branco, Portugal, organized by COPEC – Science and Education Research Council and hosted by Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB) at the Technology School of Castelo Branco (ESTCB). Castelo Branco is located in one of the most beautiful landscapes at the Center of Portugal. The passing of time has left its traces in the city of Castelo Branco, considered the capital of Beira Baixa region. The ruins of the Templar castle, the beautiful Baroque gardens of the Bishop’s House, several 15th century portals of its historical center, the manor houses of local families and the recently renewed modernist building Cine-Teatro Avenida are some of those traces. Internationally known for its magnificent bride bedspreads, Castelo Branco knew how to take advantage of its influence to embellish the city. If you take a closer look, you will see that the bedspread motifs have been preserved in the basalt and lime drawings of the Portuguese pavement, filling many of the city’s streets. The Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB) is a higher education public institution, whose corporate culture is characterized by the richness from the diversity and own uniqueness of each of the six schools that are (Agriculture, Applied Arts, Education, Management, Health and Technology). The availability of a wide range of training opportunities at the graduate and postgraduate levels, the strong link to the business, educational, social and cultural world, the close cooperation with the labor market, the transfer of knowledge and technology and the strategy of internationalization are betting that guarantee to graduates a comprehensive training through the acquisition and development of scientific and technical, linguistic, interpersonal and cultural skills, thus preparing them to respond competitively to the demands of a borderless labor market, but providing them also conditions to develop their own activity, by encouraging creativity and entrepreneurship. Located on the campus of Talagueira, Technology School of Castelo Branco (ESTCB) was born from the extinction of the School of Technology and Management in 1997, and hence resulted in the creation of two schools: ESTCB located in Castelo Branco and ESGIN, School of Management, in Idanha-a-Nova. Currently, ESTCB offers Technicians and Professionals Courses (CTeSP), BA, MA, and Certified Training, Distance Learning and Short Courses. These courses are characterized by a high employment rate of its graduates and substantial demand from employers. There is always a strong relationship and openness for collaboration with companies and organizations in the region, in the fields of Engineering and Technology. This is the environment that we provide to the WCCSETE'2016 and we are making our best to welcome everyone. Castelo Branco's early history apart from a document dated 1182, which mentions the donation of the land on which the town now stands to the Knights Templar. The settlement got it's autonomy in 1213 and Pope Innocent II gave it the name of Castelobranco in 1215. Castelo Branco became a city in 1771. Today's city has an attractive centre with generous parks, wide boulevards and bustling squares. It lies on the Beira Baixa railway line, which runs to Lisbon, and is close to the famous fortress village of Monsanto ('Portugal's most Portuguese village') and the Serra da Estrela, Portugal's highest mountain range and a popular national park. The most famous site is probably the Jardim do Paco Episcopal (Bishop's garden) which was made by the Bishop of Guarda, Joao de Mendonca, in the eighteenth century, and is thought to be one of the most beautiful Baroque gardens in Portugal. Clipped hedges, lakes, fountains and elaborate staircases harbour a weird and wonderful collection of granite statues, grouped into 'themes' including zodiac signs, the four seasons, the five parts of the world and the kings and queens of Portugal (together with Spanish kings Felipe I and II, which are strangely smaller than their Portuguese counterparts!). One of the typical products of the region are the embroidered linen bedspreads with natural silk yarn, known as Castelo Branco embroidery, oriental inspired, became known from the mid-sixteenth century and constitute a unique regional heritage.

Equally important is the Gastronomic tradition of this region of Beira Baixa has long been appreciated for its richness and diversity, related to the history and customs of a once people limited by their geographical location and the agricultural resources of the land, highlighting: the Castelo Branco pies; the boulder soup; roasted lamb; various types of sausages; of sweets as the Carolo Porridge, the rice pudding or Tijeladas; the famous Castelo Branco cheese and Cottage cheese and the wines of Cova da Beira region. We will start our cultural session with a guided visit to the CCCCB (CENTRO CULTURA CONTEMPORÂNEA CASTELO BRANCO, http://www.cmcastelobranco.pt/index.php?link=ccccb) at 4:00 pm. Barros The purpose of this paper is to present the important aspects of the WCCSETE2016 – II World Congress on Computer Science, Engineering and Technology Education, a congress that is a high standard forum for the discussions and solutions for the betterment of professional practice as well as for research. It is a congress that counts with participation of organizations and authors in a top scientific and research environment. WCCSETE2016 is another successful edition organized by COPEC – Science and Education Research Council in partnership with Education Society of IEEE and this edition happens in Castelo Branco, Portugal at the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB). These organizations have been working together along a year putting up a top scientific congress with quality and impact in academic and professional communities. WCCSETE2016 has the honor to have many scientists in their fields of expertize, who are sharing their achievements and researches with peers. LEVERAGING INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS TO IMPROVE ENGINEERING, COMPUTER SCIENCE, AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION James Sluss Industry-University partnerships play a vital role in improving Engineering, Computer Science and Technology Education. These partnerships often take different form depending upon the country and/or political union in which they are implemented. For example, laws, university institutional structures, and accreditation standards vary across borders and impact the interaction between industry and universities. In this presentation, a perspective from the United States will be put forth with illustrations of the myriad ways these partnerships take shape. Topics include: industry participation in advisory boards, sponsored capstone design projects, internships, financially-sponsored research, student professional development, accreditation, institutional ranking, and fundraising and development. The transition from high school to college can be very difficult for many students. At the University of Pittsburgh, we have a system of courses and academic counseling that is designed to address these issues and help with this transition. One major component of our program is a process to help the freshman cope with academic failure. This paper discusses an approach to address the emotional issues that the freshmen students endure due to their academic failure. It was determined through this research that the freshmen engineering students must adjust their unrealistic, preconceived academic expectations transferred from high school, as well as accept academic failure and learn to react in a positive manner to their classroom performance. DEVELOPING SYSTEMS USING USABILITY ENGINEERING Barbara Bernal Why use Usability Engineering? The primary key for current successful computer applications centers on the user’s interaction with the system. Effective interactions consider physical ergonomics, human cognition, perception, memory, and processing of the information. Developers who evaluate and validate multiple prototypes of the computer application with usability principles share successful ventures. This paper covers Usability Engineering techniques contributing to effective, improved systems supporting the use of computers, minimizing the user’s learning, and supporting diverse user styles of interaction.

TECHNICAL SESSION 1 CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND PRACTICE IN ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION Walter W. Buchanan, Ali Mehrabian, Ali Rahrooh, M. The College of Technology at Purdue University Northwest has developed and implemented a short-term experiential learning program for students engineering and engineering technology from foreign institution. Next the means of introducing sustainability concepts into university curricula in an interdisciplinary manner through Systems Thinking will be explored. Finally, some practical observations and more thoughts in developing online courses in engineering and technology are presented and discussed. SOME OBSERVATIONS FOR ONLINE COURSE DEVELOPMENT IN ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY Ali Mehrabian, Walter W. Buchanan, Alireza Rahrooh The many advantages of online courses to both students and the institutions offering them are well established and substantiated in literature, and today many institutions of higher education in the United States and abroad deliver online education to the learners at all levels including undergraduate and graduate levels. As a result, online education is rapidly changing the face of education for the newer generation of students particularly due to the effects of the recent economic situations felt worldwide. This paper provides some of the authors’ observations and more thoughts for the course development in online/distance learning environments in engineering and technology. Here is discussed some of the faculty observations and explorations seeking best practices in online course development in engineering and technology-related fields. We concentrate only on practical observations in online course developments in demanding fields of engineering and technology. INTRODUCING SUSTAINABILITY CONCEPTS INTO UNIVERSITY CURRICULA M. Buchanan The aim of this paper is to explore the means of introducing sustainability concepts into university curricula in an interdisciplinary manner through Systems Thinking. It is generally accepted that a holistic approach is essential in sustainability studies, but teaching such a new and a complex topic to a diverse student population is by no means easy. There are various sustainability paradigms and their associated methodologies in literature, which makes the selection of the teaching material challenging. The general framework proposed in this study aims to help the potential instructors to choose the background material needed to teach sustainability through in Systems Thinking. The background material is limited to system dynamics and complexity science-organizational cybernetics. INDUSTRIAL-SPONSORED AND THE PROCESS OF CAPSTONE SENIOR DESIGN PROJECTS AT UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCE (UC/CEAS) Amir Salehpour, Corey Denman At the UC/CEAS department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME), students that are in the engineering technology program, must complete a capstone senior design (SD) project as a requirement to graduate. Prior to fall semester, students are required to submit their SD idea to the faculty for input and approval. The faculty meets during the summer to discuss and evaluate the proposed SD ideas. Based on their problem statement and a detail background on their intended design ideas, the faculty will vote if the ideas from each student will be approved or rejected. Once the SD ideas are approved, the SD process starts in the fall with a written proposal stating their intentions for chosen project ideas. A SURVEY EXPECTANCY AND ATTITUDES ON PRIVACY IN SOCIAL NETWORKING OF INFORMATICS STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BUENOS AIRES Osvaldo Clua, Maria Feldgen New information and communication technologies (ICT) have been introduced in the classroom providing new means of interacting during the teaching and learning process. Social network communities facilitate the sharing of identity and other private information in a network. Compared with traditional methods for information disclosure, such as a campus directory and bulletin boards, the social network community fosters a more subjective and holistic disclosure of identity information. Depending upon the use of an e-campus software or the use of plain social networking tools such as web pages, forums or mailing lists, the disclosed information may reach people outside the community or outside the intended group. We conducted a survey among students during the first term to obtain a panorama of their expectations and attitudes. In the survey we asked about privacy attitudes in three social networks: Facebook, Google and LinkedIn. EDUCATIONAL SOFTWARE FOR ENGINEERING UNDERGADUATE COURSES: SPREADSHEET FOR THE COMPUTATION OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTANT FATE André Luiz de Lima Reda, Carlos Alberto de Moya Figueira Netto, Larissa Xavier de Melo Air pollution has been a problem since the industrial revolution, in the late nineteenth century – particularly in terms of the atmospheric degradation due to effluent release by industrial chimneys. Pollutants are transported in the atmosphere subject to translation, convection, diffusion and chemical reactions – in this case, they may undergo either increase in concentration, or consumption. The mathematical spreadsheet presented here has been applied in undergraduate Engineering courses, helping students practice the numerical operations used to simulate the fate of suspended or dissolved pollutants discharged by chimneys on a moving atmosphere. The spreadsheet considers the transformations of a Gaussian plume of a conservative pollutant undergoing translation and dispersion, while following a horizontal translation axis under particular atmospheric conditions. It has been successfully used by the authors to teach “Introduction to Environmental Engineering” – a subject taught in the basic years of undergraduate Engineering courses.

IPCB SOLAR RACING TEAM: A MULTIDISCIPLINARY LABORATORY José Salvado, Luís P. C. Neto, José Simão It is generally accepted that multidisciplinary teamwork fosters and enriches student´s technical skills. The authors use electric mobility as moto to challenge a group of students from different courses to create solar electric powered vehicles and participate in two national competitions. Two vehicles were built in just one semester, and both scored significantly in the two competitions. Although still at a work-in-progress phase, the achievements already obtained encourage us to continue with this project. TEACHING COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS: CHALLENGES AND TARGET AUDIENCES Raquel Amaro Depending on the standpoint, Computational Linguistics can be defined as a subfield of Computer Science dedicated to the processing of specific data – natural language data – or as a subfield of Linguistics concerned with formal modeling of linguistic knowledge for computation purposes. These two perspectives reflect the two main paths to this interdisciplinary field, but also the challenges posed to its teaching. Namely, focusing on, and mastering, logic reasoning and formal models, for Language and Humanities students, and acknowledging and dealing with irregularity, variation and idiosyncrasy, for Computer Science, Engineering and Technology students. This paper discusses the major obstacles and handicaps that seem to stand in the way of teaching/learning Computational Linguistics, an area with high visibility, appeal and applicability potential, aiming at raising attention to some simple but usually overseen aspects that may improve teaching/learning results.

This system is based on convolutional codes of memory unit, which sought to exploit the degree of complexity inherent in the process of searching for optimal codes. Based on these data and aiming to reduce this index, this study aimed to identify students' difficulties in representing Analytic geometry graphics as well as suggest how proposed the use of Winplot software as a learning tool for building charts from of elementary functions. During the research, it was shown that most of the students interviewed had difficulties in solving Vector Algebra and Analytic Geometry issues and work with Winplot was important to relate the algebraic and geometric representation. The survey found that the Winplot contributed to students could solve Vector Algebra and Analytic Geometry issues.

TECHNICAL SESSION 3 APPLYING PROJECT IN TEACHING METHODS: CASE STUDYS OF TECHNICAL COURSE MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY, BUSINESS USING REAL Rodrigo Uliana Ferreira, Celso Geraldo Tucci, Leandra R.D. Fernandes This article aims to present a case study of the application of the teaching methodology for project into two classes in technical courses in Business Administration and Computer Science, presenting the results achieved by students who used real companies for the development of the course. In 2012 we created a PEDS Information polo Group to apply the methodology for project using real companies into two groups of different areas and compare the final results, evasion, references, social and personal development of students, based on the area references as Charles Maguerez, José Pacheco, Rubens Alves and others. Education is dynamic and requires some differences to attract and encourage students to study, the National Commercial Training Service SENAC São José do Rio Preto - SP, in 2012 began two groups being in the areas of management and technology a different work by design. RGB LINGHTING SYSTEM WITH REMOTE CONTROL José António Barros Vieira, André Laranjeira, Pedro Rodrigues This paper shows the applying teaching used in the Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications in ESTCB. The prototype consists of a LED lighting system RGB that enables to control the "lamp" LED, set the brightness, create a custom color and finally set an alarm clock all through a wireless command. The steps are described for the realization of the prototype showing how students can integrate the various acquired knowledge in engineering. The prototype consists of two parts: the remote control comprises a microcontroller, an infrared LED and a matrix keyboard, where the user enters a command to send the lighting system that is constituted by a microcontroller, an infrared reception, "a lamp" RGB LED's, an LCD and a clock/alarm obtaining a functional prototype/an engineering solution.

GLOBAL IMPACT OF THE MODELLUS X TOOL Pedro Duque Vieira, Veronika Kozlova, João Pedro Valente Modellus X is a mathematical modelling tool that enables students and teachers from high school to university to create or explore models in an interactive and integrated way. Modellus X can be used in the introduction to computer modeling allowing an easy and intuitive creation of models using only standard mathematical notation. For having the possibility to create animations using interactive objects with mathematical properties expressed in the model, it allows the exploration of multiple representations, the analyses of experimental data integrating images, animations, graphs and tables. The main focus of the tool is to demystify mathematical modeling giving meaning to the physical representation of models. Its aid in teaching has been tested in innumerous works (Master and PhD thesis) with the unanimous conclusion of its potential to significantly improve the students understanding of subjects when integrated as a working tool in the classroom.

ALTERNATIVE WITH POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTION TO THE ENGINEERS TRAINING IN SERRANA FLUMINENSE REGION Luiz Heleno Duque The engineering education, is undergoing reorientation to integrate the student to professional life as an engineer. Some realignments in curricular profiles of engineering schools are processed to introduce potential that future engineering profession will require. The legislation sets forth guidelines for Education in Brazil has allowed adaptation to the new needs of engineering education to the practice thereof, including at the regional level. This work has the main objective to investigate some possibilities of integration Company / School oriented teaching for the technology, including learning outside of the classroom that have the potential to meet the human resource needs of the productive sector in the Serrana Fluminense region. OMICS TECHNOLOGIES IN NEPHROLOGY Cecília Neta Alves Pegado Gomes, Ana Carolina Monteiro da Silva, Elaine Cristine Alves Pegado, João Agnaldo do Nascimento, Sérgio Ribeiro dos Santos The nephrology integrates computing and biomedical engineering. Since the artificial kidney, through the machine learning techniques such as Bayseanas networks, artificial neural networks and ontologies, this integration appears to be irreversible. In this context, it is called omics technologies to explore the roles and relationships of the molecules that make up the phenotype of an organism (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics). literature review on the basis PUBMED returned 48 review articles available fully with search string omics AND nephrology. They were analyzed for pathology and the biological system level. This study resulted that 83% occurred at the level of genes (genome) and 77% directed to the Chronic Kidney Disease. It follows that the application of Omics technologies, providing metabolic profiles and pathophysiology of the disease quickly and cost effectively optimizes the management of this pathology. USE OF THE RONIERE’S METHOD IN THE PREPARATION OF SMART ALLOY Ni-Ti-Hf Roniere Leite Soares, Walman Benício de Castro, Jackson de Brito Simões This article explains a teaching method capable of transforming atomic percentage by mass percentage (at.% → wt.%) for alloys composed of any amount of elements and any individual grades. Applied on any type of metal alloy (binary, ternary, quaternary, etc), the method assumes that the sum of the products between adopted rated percentage (at.%) and typical atomic mass (g/mol) of each one of the chemical elements involved is always equal to Avogadro’s Constant (6,023 x 1023 atoms). It is also possible to determine the actual mass (g) for each of the constituent metals. To show the pedagogical efficiency, it applied the method to 5 substitutional alloys Ni50Ti50-XHfX (where X = 8, 11, 14, 17 and 20 at.%).
