Common Financial Mistakes You Should Avoid When Living In Spain!

When moving to Spain or any other country, people may make various mistakes with their investments. Here are some common mistakes individuals make when investing in Spain:

Lack of Research:

FailingtoresearchtheSpanishmarketthoroughly is a significant mistake. Understanding the local economic conditions, legal and tax frameworks, and specific investment opportunities is crucial before making any investment decisions.

Neglecting Currency Fluctuations:

If you’re investing in Spain while keeping your assets in a different currency, fluctuations in currency exchange rates can significantly impact your returns. It’s important to consider currency risk and devise appropriate strategies to mitigate it.

Not Diversifying Adequately:

Putting all your investment funds into a single asset or a specific sector can be risky. Diversification helps spread risk and minimise the impact of any adverse events. Ensure that your investment portfolio in Spain is well-diversified across different asset classes and industries.

Ignoring Legal and Tax Considerations:

Different countries have varying legal and tax systems. Not understanding the Spanish regulations and tax implications of your investments can lead to unforeseen financial consequences. Seek professional advice from local experts, such as tax advisors or financial planners, to ensure compliance and optimise your tax position.

Overlooking Cultural Differences:

Spain has its own unique business and investment culture. It’s important to understand the local customs, business practices, and investor behaviour to navigate the investment landscape effectively. Building relationships with local professionals and seeking their guidance can be beneficial.

Page 10 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTALINK MAGAZINE
Costalink Private Wealth Expert Kasie Della-Rumball.

Relying Solely on Real Estate:

Real estate has traditionally been a popular investment choice in Spain, but relying solely on this asset class can be risky. The property market can experience fluctuations, and your investment may face liquidity issues. Consider diversifying your investments across different sectors and asset classes for a well-rounded portfolio.

Failing to Plan for Retirement:

Moving to Spain often involves a significant lifestyle change, including retirement planning. Failing to adequately plan and save for retirement can leave you financially vulnerable in the long run. Consider the Spanish pension system, private retirement accounts, and other investment vehicles that can help secure your future.

Remember, it’s always advisable to consult with financial professionals, including advisors and tax experts, who have knowledge of both your home country and the Spanish investment landscape. They can provide personalised advice based on your individual circumstances and goals.

Rising Damp on the Costa del Sol: The Hidden Risk to Your Property

The beautiful Costa del Sol, where sun-drenched beaches and vibrant culture attract expats from around the world. However, amidst the charm of this coastal paradise, there lurks a hidden danger that poses a significant risk to your property: rising damp.

In this article, we will explore the causes of rising damp and shed light on why it is crucial to conduct a health check of your property before the end of summer.

Page 14 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTALINK MAGAZINE

Understanding Rising Damp:

Rising damp is a common issue in coastal areas like the Costa del Sol, where the proximity to the sea and the region’s unique climate contribute to its prevalence. It occurs when groundwater is absorbed by porous materials such as bricks, mortar, and concrete, causing moisture to rise upwards through capillary action. Over time, this moisture can penetrate walls, floors, and foundations, leading to a range of detrimental consequences. There are many causes, here we cover, ONLY four…

1. High Water Table:

The Costa del Sol’s close proximity to the sea results in a high water table, where the level of groundwater is relatively high. This increased water pressure can push moisture into the foundations and walls of buildings, exacerbating the risk of rising damp.

2. Porous Construction Materials:

Many properties on the Costa del Sol are constructed using porous materials, such as traditional brick and mortar. These materials readily absorb moisture, allowing rising damp to penetrate and spread throughout the building.

3. Lack of Proper Damp Proofing:

Inadequate damp-proof courses or the absence of effective moisture barriers during construction can leave properties vulnerable to rising damp. Over time, the absence of these preventive measures can cause significant damage to the structural integrity of the building.

4. Irrigation Systems.

Improperly designed or malfunctioning irrigation systems can lead to an uneven distribution of moisture in the soil around your property. Overwatering specific areas can cause the soil to become oversaturated, leading to excessive moisture accumulation near the foundation. Conversely, other areas may receive insufficient water, resulting in uneven soil settlement. These imbalances can place uneven stress on the foundation, potentially leading to cracks and structural damage over time.

Rising damp provides an ideal environment for the growth of mould and mildew. These fungi release spores that can trigger allergies, respiratory issues, and other health problems. If left unchecked, mould infestations can spread throughout your property, affecting both your well-being and the value of your investment.

The unsightly effects of rising damp, such as damp patches, peeling wallpaper, and blistering paint, can mar the beauty of your home. These visual signs can be off-putting to potential buyers and tenants, impacting your ability to sell or rent your property.

Take Action: Get a Property Health Check:

Don’t let rising damp silently erode the value and integrity of your property on the Costa del Sol. Take the proactive step of scheduling a property health check today to identify and address any rising damp concerns. By doing so, you will be preserving the beauty and longevity of your investment while ensuring a safe and healthy living space for years to come.

Three Spanish Inventions and Firsts in the World

Submarines -A Spanish Invention

One of the first prototypes dates from 1859, when the Catalan Narciso Monturiol designed and built a manual submersible vessel, the

Ictineo I and then the Ictineo II in 1864, of which a commemorative monument can be seen in Barcelona. Isaac Peral y Caballero, was a Spanish engineer, naval officer and designer of the Peral Submarine. He joined the Spanish navy in 1866, and developed the world’s first electric-powered submarine which was launched in 1888.

First Computer Game

In 1912 Leonardo Torres y Quevedo invented the first computer game in history: El Ajedrista (The Chess Player), an autonomous robotic chess game. The same Spanish inventor is attributed with having created the first digital calculator and the radio remote control.

The Space Suit

Though the first man stepped on the moon in 1969, in the 1930s astronomers and physicists were already planning for the voyage to outer space. Emilio Herrera Linares, a Spanish military colonel, is credited with being the first to design a pressurised suit which was used in a high-altitude balloon flight in 1936.

It’s A Funny Old World:

Vikings Did Not Have Horned Helmets

If we asked you to picture a Viking, chances are you’d picture a big hairy bloke with a horned helmet. But actually, Viking helmets didn’t have horns! Horns would’ve been impractical in battle, although there is evidence of other civilisations having horned helmets! The legend likely originated with Scandinavian artists in the 1800s, who popularised portrayals of the nomadic raiders wearing the equipment in their works.

60 SecondsMatt Nuttall

When and why did you start your fitness journey?

I started my fitness journey around the same time I was leaving high school, so that would be around 27 years ago, wow! My teacher got me into weightlifting as I think he could see I could easily end up going down a different path. I fell in love with weight training and kickboxing and went on to compete for England in kickboxing and also competed in bodybuilding shows.

What is the reason you decide on muscle gain as your chosen goal?

I just fell in love with the process of building muscle, I loved hanging around the gym even if I wasn´t training. I just wanted to be in good shape. I loved the way it made me feel and the confidence it gave me. I was always chasing the man in the mirror after a session and I still am to this day. I wanted to be like my childhood hero´s, Arnold and Stallone.

Who was your inspiration for this?

Arnold and Stallone were big inspirations for me growing up and watching their movies all the time. Also Jean Claude Van Dam, which is mainly why I wanted to combine kickboxing aswell. I had a couple of real life inspirations also, one who I am still friends with to this day.

Page 32 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTALINK MAGAZINE

What motivates you?

Mymainmotivationisjusttobeabetterversionof myself all the time. I want to constantly improve, I want to be leaner, faster, stronger and I want to feel proud of my achievements. I take motivation from everywhere. I see people in the gym who are just starting out on their journey and that gives me motivation. I want to be a role model for my clients also, someone that they can look upto. Fitness has always been the one thing i´m really good at so to stay fit, active and in shape is really important for me.

Toughest challenge you encounter in reaching your goal?

I guess the toughest challenge I face when reachingmygoalsismyownselfsabotage. Many of my clients report the same also. I can be my own worst enemy especially as I get closer and closer to my goal. But I love that mental struggle and I love to prove myself wrong and beat that inner voice. Even though I know i´ll be hearing from it again in the future. I believe overcoming it over and over again makes us stronger over time.

Training tip?

Sloweverythingdown. Ifthereissomethingyou´ll hear me saying over and over again in a training setting, it’s SLOW, STRETCH and FOCUS. I have been the guy who wanted to be the strongest in the gym. I have lifted some heavy stuff, but looking back, it wasn’t actually congruent with my goals and what I wanted. It was purely to please my EGO. And that is always where injuries have occured for me. Leave your ego at the door, and spend some time in your head, listening to what your muscles are saying, slow your movements down, enjoy a great big stretch in the muscle and focus. Don´t worry what weight the next person has on the bar, stay in your own lane and enjoy your journey!

Favourite cheat meal?

I love Mexican food, I´ve been there a couple of times and I just love the flavour. Fajitas are my Go to cheat meal. It’s not even that bad a cheat meal I guess, but i will go to town with sour cream and cheese, making it quite calorific

Favourite aspect of the gym?

I love to see people trying to better themselves, that’s what I love about the gym. From the person just walking through the door, to the seasoned bodybuilder, they are all in there for the exact same reasons, to become a better version of themselves.

Favourite exercise?

I love dumbbell chest presses, I can go really heavy on them and get a super pump in the chest with them.

Best advice received?

When I first started lifting in the gym, some of the older boys at the time (older sounds funny now because they were my age now), they used to tell me that I didn’t need to go as heavy with my lifting, and I used to think they were just saying that because they didñ´t lift as much as me! 25 years later and I’m saying the same things to younger gym members!

Favourite training song?

It has to be ´no easy way out¨ from Rocky 4. That movie and the whole soundtrack has seen me be super motivated through a million workouts

Something not many people know about you?

I´m a little bit alien obsessed. If I´m ever watching tv, it’s more than likely going to be the show áncient aliens´. I sometimes drive up into the mountains in Marbella and just lay on the grass looking up at the sky. When they come, I´m going with them, that’s for sure ha ha!

Take Control: How Managing Blood Pressure Can Help Save Lives

Effectively managing your blood pressure can help reduce your chances of life-threatening medical events, even death. Gain confidence and learn how to take control of your blood pressure with these tips.

Tip 1: Monitor and Track Regularly

One of the most important steps in managing blood pressure is to monitor and track it regularly. High blood pressure, or hypertension, often goes unnoticed as it typically does not have any noticeable symptoms. By regularly measuring your blood pressure, you can identify any potential issues and take appropriate actions to keep it under control.

To monitor your blood pressure, you can use a home blood pressure monitor, which is a device that accurately measures your blood pressure in thecomfortofyourownhome.Itisrecommended to measure your blood pressure at least once a week, or as advised by your healthcare provider. Keeping a record of your readings will help you identify any patterns or trends over time, and it will also be useful when discussing your blood pressure with your doctor.

Tip 2: Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle plays a crucial role in managing blood pressure. Making positive changes in your daily habits can have a significant impact on your blood pressure readings. Here are some key aspects to consider:

a) Eat a Balanced Diet:

Opt for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins while limiting your intake of sodium, saturated fats, and processed foods. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, in particular, has been proven effective in lowering blood pressure.

b) Engage in Regular Physical Activity:

Regular exercise helps lower blood pressure and improves overall cardiovascular health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorousintensity aerobic activity per week. Additionally, incorporating strength training exercises at least twice a week is beneficial.

c) Limit Alcohol Consumption:

Excessivealcoholintakecanraisebloodpressure. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. Men should limit themselves to two drinks per day, while women should aim for one drink per day.

d) Quit Smoking:

Smoking damages blood vessels and raises blood pressure. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your overall health, including your blood pressure.

Page 34 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTALINK MAGAZINE

Tip 3: Seek Professional Guidance

Managing blood pressure is a collaborative effort between you and your healthcare provider. Seek professional guidance to ensure you are on the right track. Here’s what you should do:

a) Regular Check-ups:

Schedule regular check-ups with your doctor to have your blood pressure monitored and evaluated. Your doctor may recommend specific lifestyle modifications or prescribe medication if necessary.

b) Medication Adherence:

If your healthcare provider prescribes medication to manage your blood pressure, make sure to

take it as directed. Skipping or altering doses can negatively affect your blood pressure control.

c) Open Communication:

Be open and honest with your doctor about your concerns, symptoms, and any challenges you may face in managing your blood pressure. Your doctor can provide valuable insights and adjustments to your treatment plan.

Remember, managing blood pressure is a lifelong commitment, and it requires ongoing effort and dedication. Start taking control of your blood pressure today, and pave the way to a healthier future.

Top 10 Natural Male Grooming Tips You Should Swear By

In today’s modern world, grooming has become an essential part of every man’s daily routine. While there are countless grooming products available in the market, taking care of your appearance doesn’t necessarily have to break the bank. In fact, nature provides us with a plethora of solutions that are both effective and budget-friendly.

Here are the top 10 natural grooming tips you should swear by as a modern man, without compromising on your wallet.

Stay Hydrated:

Drinking an ample amount of water each day is crucial for maintaining healthy skin. Hydration keeps your skin moisturised, reduces the appearance of wrinkles, and prevents dryness. Aim for at least eight glasses of water daily to keep your skin glowing.

Aloe Vera Magic:

Aloe vera is a versatile plant known for its numerous benefits. It works wonders for your skin by soothing and moisturising it. Extract fresh aloe vera gel and apply it to your face to reduce acne, inflammation, and redness.

Exfoliation with Coffee Grounds:

Instead of investing in expensive exfoliators, repurpose coffee grounds from your morning brew. Mix coffee grounds with a bit of water or natural oil to create a scrub. Gently massage it onto your face and body to remove dead skin cells and reveal a smoother complexion.

DIY Beard Oil:

Maintaining a well-groomed beard doesn’t have to be costly. Create your own beard oil by mixing equal parts of jojoba oil and coconut oil. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil for fragrance. Apply the oil daily to moisturise your beard and keep it soft and healthy.

Natural Teeth Whitening:

For a brighter smile without expensive whitening treatments, turn to baking soda and lemon juice. Create a paste by mixing these two ingredients and gently brush your teeth with it. Remember to rinse thoroughly afterward.

Healthy Diet for Strong Hair:

What you eat directly affects the health of your hair. Include foods rich in vitamins A, C, E, and biotin, such as leafy greens, eggs, nuts, and whole grains, in your diet. These nutrients promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.

Page 38 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTALINK MAGAZINE

Cold Showers for Shiny Hair:

Hot water can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dull and dry. Switch to cold or lukewarm showers to keep your hair healthy, shiny, and less prone to frizz.

Natural Deodorant:

Many commercial deodorants contain harsh chemicals that can irritate the skin. Opt for a natural alternative by mixing baking soda and cornstarch to create a homemade deodorant powder. Apply it under your arms to absorb sweat and neutralise odour.

Lip Balm from Coconut Oil:

Chapped lips are not only uncomfortable but can also ruin your appearance. Ditch the storebought lip balms and use coconut oil instead.

Apply a small amount to your lips to keep them moisturised and soft.

Good Posture:

Finally, don’t overlook the importance of good posture. Standing and sitting up straight not only improves your overall appearance but also helps prevent back pain and boosts your confidence.

By incorporating these natural grooming tips into your daily routine, you can achieve a wellgroomed look without spending a fortune on expensive products. Embrace these budgetfriendly techniques and secrets, and let nature be your grooming guide as a modern man. Remember, taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be expensive—it’s all about making smart choices and utilising what nature has to offer.

Hair Loss? Non Surgical Solutions to Consider…

1. Topical medications:

Topical medications such as minoxidil and finasteride can be applied directly to the scalp to promote hair growth and prevent further hair loss.

2. Low-level laser therapy:

Low-level laser therapy involves using a device that emits low-level laser light to stimulate hair growth.

3.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy:

PRP therapy involves injecting a person’s own platelet rich plasma into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.

4.

Hair fibres:

Hair fibres are tiny fibres that can be sprinkled onto the scalp to give the appearance of thicker hair. These fibres are made from natural keratin and can be easily washed out.

5. Non Surgical Hair Replacement

Hairpieces and wigs are a great option for people with advanced hair loss. These can be custommade to match a person’s natural hair colour and style.

The methods and the advancements made in these techniques means hair replacement solutions can be offered to men, women and children. They are discrete and blend seamlessly into the clients natural hair line.

At Glow & Bubbly we are working with Strands Clinic who offer a full range of these hair replacement services:

1. Hairpieces:

Hairpieces, also known as hair systems or toupees, are custom-made hairpieces that are attached to the scalp using adhesive. These hairpieces are made from natural or synthetic hair and can be styled to match a person’s natural hair.

2. Hair extensions:

Hair extensions are a popular option for people with thinning hair. These extensions are attached to the existing hair using keratin bonds, nano links or tapes and can be blended and styled to compliment the client’s natural hair style.

3. Hair integration:

Hair integration involves attaching hair extension pieces to a mesh cap that is attached to the scalp using very tiny links. This technique can offer a number of hair replacement variations as the technique offers partial and full coverage. The hair pieces can be washed, styled and coloured to ensure they blend seamlessly. This service is for people with advanced hair loss.

4. Hair volumizers:

Hair volumizers are hairpieces that are designed to add volume to the crown and top of the hair line. These hairpieces are attached to the scalp using links or adhesive strips, they come in various sizes and thickness so your practitioner can fit them discreetly into the clients natural hair.

You can contact us at the salon for more information or to book a consultation online or call 00 34 951 239 316.

A hearty and comforting dish, Patatas a lo Pobre, or “poor man’s potatoes,” is a traditional Spanish recipe that originated from humble roots. Local potatoes are sliced and cooked with onions, green bell peppers, garlic, and olive oil. The name reflects the simplicity of the ingredients used, which were readily available to farmers in the region. The combination of soft, golden potatoes, caramelised onions, and the aroma of olive oil makes this dish a true Costa del Sol classic.

Ingredients:

• 1kg potatoes

• 1 onion

• 2 green or red peppers (optional)

• Salt

• Extra virgin olive oil

• 1 garlic clove

There are deviations from the original recipe, and some venta’s and tapas bars add or include chorizo, bacon, eggs and red bell peppers…

How To Cook

“Poor Man’s Potatoes”

Step 1.

The first step is very easy and fast! You just have to peel the potatoes and cut them into round slices. Make sure that your potato slices aren’t too thin because that way they’ll fall apart. Also carefully cut the onions and peppers in julienne style (thin and long).

Step 2.

Pour the olive oil on a large frying pan and in the meantime put some salt on the potatoes. Once you salted the potatoes, place them in the frying pan with the cold oil. It is important that the oil it’s cold at the beginning because this way they will get the characteristic “confit” texture.

Step 3.

Cook the potatoes on a low heat for 15 minutes, add the pepper and onion slices and cook all of them together for 10 more minutes on medium heat.

Step 4.

Remove the oil and let the vegetables on the dry pan to toast (you can also use a new pan). While toasting them put the garlic and a little bit of salt.

Step 5.

Serve them on a large plate or in individual bowls as a garnish.

Cabin Crew of the Month?

Welcome aboard “Stingem Flight 123 to Malaga! We are pleased to have some of the best pilots in the industry... Unfortunately, none of them are on this flight...!’ This was the greeting from a Cabin Crew Member on the Passenger Announcement System. .

This was a flight attendant on a flight who clearly was either on his last flight, or wanted the sack, or just had a sense of humour that perhaps not everyone understood, however, he/she did have the passengers laughing… who knows, but we’ll recount the unexpected announcements…

Next, the famous safety announcements and ‘Fasten Seatbelt Routine’ What he/she said was:

“To operate your seatbelt, insert the metal tab into the buckle, and pull tight. It works just like every other seat belt, and if you don’t know how to operate one, you probably shouldn’t be out in public unsupervised”

Continuing with the safety talk, “In the event of a sudden loss of cabin pressure, oxygen masks will descend from the ceiling. Stop screaming, grab the mask, and pull it over your face. If you have a small child travelling with you, secure your mask before assisting with theirs. If you are travelling with two or more small children, decide now which one you love the most”

Once the plane landed, he continued, “As you exit the plane, make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants”

His final announcement was: “Thank you for flying “Stingem Airlines”. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride”

Tips to Help Keep Pets Safe this Summer

The Costa del Sol is known for its stunning beaches and picturesque landscapes, but it also experiences scorching temperatures during the summer, often reaching recordbreaking levels. These extreme conditions can pose significant risks to our pets, who are more susceptible to heatstroke and dehydration. Additionally, the month of August brings vibrant festivals and fireworks, which can cause anxiety and distress in animals due to the loud noises. Here are seven essential tips to ensure the safety and well-being of your pets this summer:

Provide Ample Shade and Fresh Water:

Create a cool retreat for your pets by setting up shaded areas in your home or yard. Access to fresh water is vital, so make sure your pets have a constant supply of clean and cool water. Consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl to help keep it refreshing throughout the day.

Limit Exercise During Peak Heat Hours:

Avoid exercising your pets during the hottest hours of the day. The pavement can become scorching hot and cause burns to their sensitive paw pads. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when temperatures are cooler. Remember, short and frequent walks are better than prolonged periods of exercise in the heat.

Page 60 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTALINK MAGAZINE

Never Leave Pets in Vehicles:

Even on relatively mild days, the temperature inside a parked car can skyrocket within minutes, leading to heatstroke and potentially fatal consequences. Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows cracked open. If you must travel with your pet, ensure the air conditioning is on and provide proper ventilation.

Prepare for Fireworks and Loud Noises:

August brings vibrant festivals and fireworks displays to the Costa del Sol. These loud sounds can trigger anxiety and fear in pets. Create a safe and quiet space within your home where they can retreat during fireworks shows. Close the windows, draw the curtains, and play calming music to help drown out the noise.

Use Pet-Safe Sunscreen:

Just like humans, pets can get sunburned, especially those with light-coloured fur or exposed skin. Use pet-specific sunscreen on sensitive areas, such as the nose, ears, and belly, to protect them from harmful UV rays. Consult with your veterinarian to choose the most suitable sunscreen for your pet.

Watch for Signs of Heatstroke:

Know the signs of heatstroke in pets, which include excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, and collapse. If you suspect heatstroke, immediately move your pet to a cool area, offer water to drink, and contact a veterinarian for immediate assistance.

Plan for Pet-Friendly Activities:

Enjoy the summer together by engaging in petfriendly activities. Explore the shaded trails of localparks,visitdog-friendlybeaches,ororganise playdates with other pets in a safe and controlled environment. Engaging in these activities will provide mental stimulation and ensure your pet stays active while avoiding extreme heat.

Keeping our pets safe during the scorching summer months in the Costa del Sol requires diligence and care. By following these seven essential tips, you can ensure your furry companions stay healthy, happy, and protected from the extreme temperatures and booming sounds of August. Remember, a little extra attention and preparation go a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable summer for our beloved pets.

Literal Translation

Spanish Sayings

Translated to English! Flipar

Let’s assume you have a fascinating or bizarre titbit of gossip to share with your buddies that you know will blow their minds. Use the jocular Spanish expression “vas a flipar” in this situation, which directly translates to “you’re going to flip/freak out” in English. You can substitute the same overused comments like “Qué interesante” or “Qué locura” for “!Qué flipe!” if you happen to hear some incredibly exciting news.

For Example:

Vas a flipar. (You’re going to flip out / freak out)

Flipé en el concierto de Beyoncé. (I flipped out / freak out at the Beyoncé concert!)

!Qué flipe! (What a blast! or how cool!)

It’s also important to know that the expression “estar flipado” exists but has a connotation similar to the negative use “crazy” in English.

“Estás flipando si piensas que saldré con él (You’re crazy if you think I’d go out with him.)
