Bajo una gran cúpula que regula la entrada de luz natural, el Louvre Abu Dhabi se concibe como un archipiélago de volúmenes blancos que contienen los diferentes espacios expositivos.

Under a colossal dome that filters sunlight, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is designed as an archipelago of white volumes on the water, and that contain the different exhibition spaces.

Diseñado por Jean Nouvel —ganador del premio Pritzker en 2008—, el Louvre Abu Dhabi se inspira en la tradición árabe. Un conjunto de prismas blancos, que recuerdan a la trama urbana de la medina, da lugar a esta ‘ciudad museo’ situada sobre el mar. Una gran cúpula, reconocible desde la distancia, cubre la mayor parte de las salas.

Construida con acero, la cubierta de 180 metros de diámetro consta de ocho capas diferentes: cuatro exteriores revestidas de acero inoxidable y cuatro interiores revestidas de aluminio. El patrón geométrico, que fue cuidadosamente diseñado, se repite en las ocho capas superpuestas variando en cada una el tamaño y el ángulo. Los rayos de luz, por tanto, atraviesan ocho tamices antes de llegar a las galerías de exposición, lo que genera un efecto cinemático que cambia con la posición del sol. La cubierta se apoya en cuatro soportes, separados 110 metros entre sí, que se esconden dentro de los volúmenes del museo para dar la impresión de que flota.

Desde el punto de vista medioambiental, el proyecto busca crear un microclima autorregulado gracias a la sombra que arroja la cubierta y al enfriamiento a través de las superficies de agua. Los visitantes que llegan al museo experimentan, por tanto, una transición gradual entre el calor exterior y el ambiente interior. Un acuerdo firmado en 2007 entre los Gobiernos francés y emiratí ha hecho posible que la colección del museo contenga 700 obras prestadas por diversas instituciones galas, fundamentalmente el Museo del Louvre.

Jean Nouvel – Pritzker Prize laureate in 2008 – sought inspiration for the concept of the Louvre Abu Dhabi in traditional Arabic architectural culture. Its contrasting series of white buildings, designed to create a ‘museum city’ in the sea, recall the medina and low-lying Arab settlements. A huge steel dome, clearly recognizable from afar, covers the majority of the exhibition halls. Measuring 180 meters in diameter, the dome consists of eight different layers: four outer layers clad in stainless steel and four inner layers clad in aluminum. The complex pattern is the result of a carefully studied geometric design, and is repeated at various sizes and angles in the eight superimposed layers. Each ray of light must penetrate the eight layers before appearing in the museum halls. The result is a cinematic effect as the sun’s path progresses throughout the day. The roof is supported by only four permanent piers, each 110 meters apart. These are hidden within the museum buildings to give the impression that the dome is floating.

As for its environmental approach, the project creates a self-controlled microclimate thanks to the shade the roof provides and the cooling effect of the water surfaces. In this way, upon reaching the museum visitors experience a gradual transition from the heat outdoors to the interior atmosphere. An agreement signed in 2007 between the governments of France and the United Arab Emirates has secured the loan of 700 works from French institutions, principally the Louvre.

The series titled ‘Coastal Geometries’ is included in the book Discovering China, where the Hong Kong-based photographer explores and portrays the fragility of natural landscapes altered by human beings.

Arquitecto y fotógrafo, Tugo Cheng captura los patrones geométricos inherentes a la acuicultura tradicional de la costa de Fujian, en el sudeste de China. La colocación rítmica de las redes de pesca, los recintos de marisco o los postes de bambú generan un paisaje insólito, intensificado por la luz, que tiende hacia el minimalismo.

Tan solo la presencia de la barca y el pescador devuelve el carácter real a la imagen abstracta a través de la escala humana. Además de la calidad plástica, Cheng busca que sus fotografías promuevan la conservación de la cultura tradicional China, amenazada por la sobreexplotación.

Architect and photographer, Tugo Cheng captures the underlying geometric patterns of traditional aquaculture on the coast of Fujian, southeast China. The rhythmic positioning of fishing nets, shellfish pens, and bamboo poles creates a unique and minimalist landscape, intensified by light. Only the presence of a boat and a fisherman gives the abstract image a sense or reality, through the addition of a human scale. Aside from pursuing aesthetic quality, through his photographs Cheng also works to support the conservation of traditional Chinese fishing culture, threatened by overexploitation.

En el año 2008, las cinco mayores empresas del mundo estaban vinculadas con el sector de la alimentación, la industria petroquímica, la energía eléctrica y la fabricación de vehículos a motor. Hoy, sólo diez años después, son los grandes titanes tecnológicos —Apple, Facebook, Amazon o Google— quienes reinan en el mundo globalizado del siglo xxi.

Estas compañías, que ya son capaces —gracias a la enorme cantidad de información y recursos que gestionan— de cambiar nuestra manera de relacionarnos con nuestro entorno, de conocer al detalle toda nuestra actividad en red, de crear tendencias masivas o incluso de predecir, con un mínimo margen de error y en tiempo real, cuánto tardaremos en ir de un punto a otro de la ciudad, no restringen su ámbito de actuación a lo puramente virtual. A través de la construcción de sus sedes, se introducen también en el campo de la arquitectura, en principio ajeno a su actividad.

Así, en Silicon Valley, el delicado y rotundo anillo de Norman Foster sintetiza las aspiraciones estéticas de Apple, el estilo informal y permanentemente transitorio de Frank Gehry combina con las hoodies del fundador de Facebook, y el dúo formado por Bjarke Ingels y Tho-

In 2008, the world’s top five companies were in the food, petrochemical, electric energy, and motor vehicle industries. Today, just ten years later, it’s the technological titans – Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Google – that rule in the globalized world of the 21st century.

With the huge amount of information and resources they manage these companies are already able to change the way we relate to our environment, follow in detail all our activity on the web, create massive trends, or even predict – with a minimum margin of error and in real time – how long it will take us to go from one point to another in the city. However, they don’t limit their scope of action to the purely virtual.

Through the construction of their headquarters they also venture into the field of architecture, in principle unrelated to their activity.

In Silicon Valley, the bold and delicate ring by Norman Foster embodies the aesthetic aspirations of Apple, the casual and permanently transitory style of Frank Gehry is combined with the hoodies of Facebook’s founder, and Bjarke Ingels and Thomas Heatherwick adapt to the dizzying vertigo that defines Google’s growth; and in Seattle, the three futuristic and interconnected spheres by NBBJ represent the logistics revolution with which Amazon is transforming consumer habits.

The longitudinal volume that contains the new Facebook headquarters has a deliberately anodyne character, only broken at specific points to make allusions to the company’s easy-going and casual aesthetic.

Apple’s new headquarters in Cupertino, promoted by Steve Jobs and designed by Foster, express the company’s pursuit of perfection.

The exact circular form follows design criteria, and the details reflect Apple’s innovative spirit: the facade is built with the world’s largest piece of curved glass, and a carbon fiber roof crowns the pavilion of access to the Steve Jobs Theater.

At Menlo Park, what appears to be a large anonymous garage is in fact the new Facebook campus. The elongated volume designed by Gehry has a purportedly anodyne character, only broken at specific points – like the two stately stairs of access to the complex – making a nod to the company’s informal and easy-going aesthetic. On the roof, landscaped and walkable throughout, the pathways are interwoven with greenery.

So that the Amazon staff can enjoy nature without leaving Seattle, the American studio NBBJ has completed three interconnected glass spheres that function as a huge greenhouse and contain a miniature Amazonian jungle. The well-being of the more than 400 plant species sharing the office space is guaranteed with an indoor humidity of 60%.

Lastly, Bjarke Ingels departs from the megalithic pretensions common to centralized headquarters with two different designs for Google: for the Charleston campus he works with Thomas Heatherwick Studio on a textile-like adaptable hangar that can be reproduced in other sites; and in Sunnyvale he proposes two zigzagging volumes with walkable roofs that favor contact with nature and a healthy lifestyle.

Con la intención de que los empleados de Amazon puedan disfrutar de la naturaleza sin salir de Seattle, el estudio norteamericano NBBJ ha levantado tres esferas vítreas conectadas entre sí, que funcionan como un gran invernadero y que albergan en su interior una selva amazónica en miniatura. Para garantizar el bienestar de las más de 400 especies de plantas que compartirán espacio con las oficinas, el edificio mantiene un nivel de humedad interior del 60%.

Por último, y tras un ambicioso proyecto fallido, Bjarke Ingels renuncia a las pretensiones megalíticas propias de las sedes centralizadas y proyecta para Google dos soluciones diferentes: en el campus de Charleston colabora con Thomas Heatherwick Studio para diseñar un hangar de apariencia textil adaptable y reproducible en otros lugares; y en Sunnyvale plantea dos volúmenes de forma zigzagueante cuyas cubiertas transitables invitan al contacto con la naturaleza y a la vida sana.

El principal objetivo del proyecto ha sido que todas las viviendas puedan disfrutar de los beneficios de estar frente al Parque Central de Valdebebas, un auténtico pulmón verde de 80 hectáreas de superficie. Valdebebas 127 concentra la edificación en dos bandas paralelas, una frente al parque, con tres torres que se levantan sobre un zócalo comercial y otra frente al paseo con un bloque continuo conformado por cinco edificios de menor altura. La separación entre las torres permite que las viviendas del bloque también puedan disfrutar de las vistas a la sierra de Guadarrama y al parque.

En el diseño de la torre se ha buscado un juego formal y compositivo en sus esquinas, alternando la posición de salón y terraza para conseguir un efecto dinámico de cremallera que personaliza la promoción. El tratamiento de la amplia zona ajardinada entre las dos bandas edificadas tiene una especial importancia en el proyecto.

Al no construir los testeros de la parcela, estos quedan abiertos mostrando la frondosidad del jardín interior.

Para la ejecución y puesta en marcha de esta primera fase del conjunto residencial se han utilizado casi 8.000 m² de la superficie ultracompacta Dekton. Este material se ha elegido por sus excelentes cualidades, como la alta resistencia a los rayos ultravioleta, la estabilidad al color, la durabilidad, el buen comportamiento ante el choque térmico, la resistencia a las manchas, la reducida porosidad o la fabricación en gran formato.

The main objective of the project was to make the most of the site’s privileged location by the central park of Valdebebas, an 80-hectare green lung, and ensure that all the apartments would have direct contact with it. Valdebebas 127 concentrates the built mass in two parallel bands, one facing the park, with three towers that go up atop a platform for commercial premises, and another facing the promenade with a continuous block comprised of five lower buildings. The separation between the towers also affords the apartments in the block views of the Guadarrama mountain range as well as the park.

The design of the tower seeks a formal and compositive interplay at the building’s corners, alternating the position of the living room and the terrace to achieve a dynamic zipper effect that gives the complex a distinctive image. The treatment of the large garden areas between the buildings is a particularly important element in the project. The perimeter of the site remains open, offering views of the lush interior gardens.

Almost 8,000 square meters of Dekton ultracompact surfaces have been used in the construction of this first phase of the residential development. This material has been chosen for its excellent qualities, such as high-resistance to UV rays, color stability, durability, resistance to thermal breaks and to stains, extremely low porosity, and large-format manufacturing.

El proyecto nace con la voluntad de que sus acabados interiores, al igual que los exteriores, sean de la máxima calidad, por eso se vuelve a recurrir a materiales como el Silestone o el Dekton en baños y cocinas.

The pursuit of maximum quality is common to both the exterior and the interior finishes, so in this case too materials such as Silestone or Dekton by Cosentino are chosen for kitchens and bathrooms.

RON ARAD IN ALMERÍA The Israeli Designer at the Cosentino Headquarters

El prestigioso diseñador israelí Ron Arad comparte con nosotros anécdotas de su vida profesional durante su visita a las instalaciones Dekton Cosentino en Almería. ¿Cómo fueron los comienzos de su carrera?

Nunca he pensado en mi formación como una carrera. Me refiero a que actualmente hago lo mismo que cuando tenía 8 años.

Siempre tuvo que ver con el lápiz, el dibujo y el discurso. Mi madre era artista, pintaba, y cada vez que me veía haciendo un buen dibujo no decía: «Va a ser un buen artista».

No, ella decía: «Será un buen arquitecto».

Temía al arte. Erróneamente pensaba que la arquitectura era algo más sólido como profesión que simplemente ser artista. ¡Qué equivocada estaba! Cuando llegué a Londres en 1973 nadie estaba construyendo nada, por lo que la Architectural Association era más parecida a una escuela de arte que las propias escuelas de arte. Había libertad, alejamiento de la realidad, de promotores, constructoras, presupuestos… Todo se hacía en papel antes de que llegasen a nuestras vidas los renders y el modelado 3D. Era un periodo de airbrushing. Cuando estudiaba, el producto final no era un edificio, sino un dibujo. Por supuesto las cosas han cambiado mucho desde entonces, pero siempre me he visto a mí mismo como un forastero en esta profesión. Amo la arquitectura, pero no tanto la profesión por todos los compromisos que conlleva. Nunca te libras de las negociaciones: con el jefe de bomberos, con la policía, con el contratista, con los vecinos, con el

marido, con la mujer… Nada que ver con los años en la escuela. Cuando acabas, haces arte, no necesitas consultarle a nadie, no debes nada. He conseguido crear un estudio bajo esas premisas. ¿Cómo entiende la relación entre arquitectura y diseño?

La verdad es que creo que ambas disciplinas comparten la forma de adentrarse en ellas.

Para mí, diseñar es crear algo que no existía anteriormente. Puede ser algo diminuto o tan grande como una torre. Si se fijan, la torre en la que estamos trabajando actualmente podría funcionar sin problema dándole la vuelta. Las plantas que normalmente irían en el techo pueden situarse en el suelo… Hay infinidad de detalles que percibo de forma distinta a un arquitecto. Hago pocos proyectos, pero los que elijo me absorben, me generan curiosidad y, por tanto, me vuelco en ellos por completo. Como por ejemplo, estas gafas. No son unas gafas normales, no tienen piezas ensambladas ni articuladas. Son una sola pieza. Para mí no tendría sentido diseñar un nuevo par de Ray-Bans, otras Tom Ford…

No me interesa lo estiloso en sí mismo, debe ser un diseño que me interese, que me genere curiosidad. [Se pone las gafas.] A partir de ahora la entrevista la haré con las gafas puestas, o no, ya veremos. ¿Qué le aconsejaría a los jóvenes diseñadores y arquitectos a punto de empezar su formación?

Mi consejo sería: no sigáis mi consejo. No intentéis ser el nuevo Frank Gehry. No necesitamos otro. Frank Gehry ya ha hecho

muchas obras. No intentéis ser el nuevo ‘quien-sea’. Centraos en aquello en lo que podáis contribuir con vuestra creatividad, lo que os llene… Qué hipócrita, estoy dando consejos ahora. No era mi intención. Satisfaced vuestra creatividad, vuestra curiosidad y lo que sea especial para vosotros.

Usted nació en Tel Aviv… ¿Cómo es su relación con su país de origen?

Creo que parte de la respuesta está en la pregunta. No ha dicho: «Usted nació en Israel.»

Ha especificado: «Usted nació en Tel Aviv.»

Amo Tel Aviv. Está en un lugar muy difícil, en un país muy difícil, en una región muy difícil y en un mundo muy difícil. Pero durante mi infancia allí no conocía mundo, esa ciudad era el centro de mi vida, y lo que no sabía no merecía ser sabido. Cuando ahora escucho la canción Strawberry Fields Forever de los Beatles no me transporta a Liverpool, me transporta a Tel Aviv, donde crecí. Cuando estás creciendo eres cautivo de tu lengua, tu cultura, tu paisaje, tu entorno… Más adelante, al entrar en la veintena, me mudé a Londres, empecé a trabajar y mis compañeros querían saber cómo influye nacer en un sitio u otro. Yo creo que lo que más nos afecta es ser forasteros, tanto por los inconvenientes de no pertenecer a tu nuevo entorno como por las ventajas de no estar atado a nadie. ¿Diría que existe la globalización en el mundo del diseño?

Sí que existe. Ya sabe, el mundo es pequeño.

Se habla del diseño británico, del israelí, del español… Pero no es fútbol. Nadie ondea sus banderas. A mí me interesan los individuos.

The prestigious designer Ron Arad shares with us details of his professional life during his visit to the showroom of Dekton Cosentino in Almería.

How was the beginning of your career?

I never thought of it as a career. I mean I’m doing the same thing now that I did when I was 8 years old. It also had to do with the pencil and drawing and talking. My mother was a painter, and every time she saw me doing a fantastic drawing as a child, she didn’t say: “He’s going to be a good artist.”

She said: “He’s going to be a good architect.”

She was afraid of art. She thought – she was wrong! – that architecture was more solid as a profession than being an artist. How wrong she was! But when I came to London in 1973, it was a time when no one was building anything in London. Absolutely nothing. So the Architectural Association was more like an art school than the art schools because there was freedom from reality – from building, from budgets, from contractors, from floor slabs. Everything was on paper. This was before computer renders and computer modeling. It was the period of airbrushing. In the period when I was studying, the final product was not a building, but a drawing. Of course things change. But I always saw myself as an outsider to the profession. I love architecture, but I don’t love the profession so much because it’s a profession of compromises. There are always lots of negotiations – with the fire brigade, with the police, with the contractor, with the neighbors, with the husband, with

the wife… It’s not like when you go to art school. When you finish, you do your art, you don’t have to consult with anyone, you are not accountable to anyone. I managed to set up a studio in that sort of mode.

How do you see the relationship between architecture and design?

Look, the approach is the same. For me, to design is to do something that doesn’t exist before you design it. It could be a small thing, it could be a huge tower. If you look at the tower that we are working on together now, it’s an upside-down tower, if you wish. All the plants that people normally put on the roof, I put on the floor. There are lots of things, when we go there, that are for me different for architects. I don’t do a lot, but when I do something, I have to be curious. The same goes when I design, for example, eyewear like this we designed. The whole thing about it is that it’s not like your glasses. It doesn’t have any parts, it doesn’t have any screws, it doesn’t have any hinges. It is one piece.

And it’s flexible and light. For me there’s no point in just styling, in making another Ray-Ban, another Tom Ford. For me it has to be something that I’m interested in, that I’m curious about. [Puts on glasses.] From now on the interview will be with the glasses. Or not. I don’t know. We’ll see.

What would be your advice to young designers or young architects in terms of how to begin their careers?

My advice would be: don’t listen to advice.

Don’t try to be the new Frank Gehry. We don’t need a new Frank Gehry. Frank Gehry has

already done a lot of work. Don’t try to be the new you-name-it. Try to do what you can make a contribution to, what satisfies you…

Well, I’m giving advice now. I didn’t want to give advice. Satisfy your own creativity, your own curiosity, and what is special to you.

You were born in Tel Aviv… How is your relationship with your home country?

I think that a bit of the answer is in your question. You didn’t say: “You were born in Israel.”

You said: “You were born in Tel Aviv.” I love Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv is in a very difficult place, in a very difficult country, in a very difficult area, in a very difficult world. But when I grew up in Tel Aviv, for me it was the center of the world, and what I didn’t know was not worth knowing. And we knew everything. When I now hear the Beatles song Strawberry Fields Forever, it doesn’t take me back to Liverpool.

I’ve never been to Liverpool. It takes me back to Tel Aviv, where I grew up. When you are growing up, you are sort of a captive of your language, your culture, your landscape, your environment. Then in my early 20s, when I moved to London, I started working and people wanted to know the influence of being from somewhere. I think the big influence is being from somewhere else, being an outsider.

It gives you the difficulties of an outsider, but also the freedom of an outsider because you don’t have any aunts and neighbors to please.

Would you say there is globalization in design?

Well, there is. You know, the world is small.

People talk about British design, Israeli design, Spanish design… But it’s not football.

Cuando creces, lo haces en un lugar, en una cultura, y esto te ayuda al principio pero a la larga debemos liberarnos de ello.

Hablemos de materiales. Su experiencia en el mundo de los materiales es amplia, versátil e innovadora. A menudo el material se convierte en un concepto en sí mismo. ¿Qué va antes, el concepto o el material?

Es un viaje de ida y vuelta. En ocasiones vemos materiales y procesos y pensamos: «¿Qué podemos hacer con ellos?» Es impresionante. Incluso esta mañana, mientras paseaba por vuestra asombrosa ciudad dedicada a los materiales y procesos pensaba: «¿Qué podría hacer aquí, qué podría hacerse…?» A veces tienes una idea y piensas: «¿Qué material sería el idóneo? ¿Y el mejor proceso? ¿El fabricante más adecuado?» Es la razón por la que estamos aquí. Nosotros hicimos un diseño antes de conocer Dekton… vosotros lo diseñasteis sin conocernos. Tras una breve investigación dimos el uno con el otro, y ahora nos encontramos aquí hablando de lo que podemos hacer juntos, de lo que aún ni nos imaginamos que podemos hacer. Lo ve, un viaje de ida y vuelta.

Diseñó el séptimo piso del hotel Puerta de América en Madrid, la galería Ivorypress expuso su obra... ¿Qué relación mantiene con España?

También hubo una exposición en Las Ramblas de Barcelona por un premio que gané.

España es uno de mis destinos vacacionales favoritos. Veraneo en Formentera. Descubrí la isla a través de Javier Mariscal hace muchos años gracias a una exposición que organizamos juntos para celebrar el décimo aniversario del Centro Pompidou. Se eligieron diez diseñadores que representasen diferentes ramas del diseño. Yo representaba la ruina porque jugaba con hormigón roto, no me preguntes por qué. Mariscal y yo éramos los más jóvenes. Nos hicimos muy amigos desde entonces. ¿Compara su trabajo con el de sus colegas de profesión?

Cualquier cosa que hagamos, si es lo suficientemente visible o visible de cualquier manera y ofrece algo nuevo, pertenece a un diálogo.

Cuando voy a una exposición o a ver algo y no siento celos, es que no es bueno. Me refiero a que, para mí, ir a una exposición y no sentir celos me hace pensar: «¿Por qué estoy perdiendo mi tiempo aquí?» Igual que cuando tengo una idea pienso: «¿Es buena o es mala?» Si viese estas gafas en una galería o, ya que no son arte, en una óptica, ¿estaría celoso? Si la respuesta es afirmativa me lanzo de lleno, pero si no...

You’re not running around with flags. I’m interested in individuals. Yes, when you grow up, you grow up in a place, a language, and a culture, which helps, but you have to claim freedom from it.

Let’s talk about materials. Your experience in materials is wide, versatile, and very innovative. Often the material itself becomes the concept. What comes first, the concept or the material?

It’s a two-way thing. Sometimes you see materials and processes and you think: “What can I do with it? This is so amazing. What shall we do with it.” Even this morning, during my visit to the amazing city you have here that is all about materials and processes, my mind went: “What can I do, what can we do…” Sometimes you have an idea and you think: “What will be the best material to use? What will be the best process? Who will be the best fabricator?” Which in a way is why we’re here. We designed the part that

we’re going to use before I knew the word ‘Dekton.’ You designed it before I knew of your existence. And with a little research, we found ourselves here. And now we’re here and seeing what we can do, and it will mean that we can do other stuff that we haven’t done yet, that we don’t know about. So it’s a two-way thing.

You built the seventh floor of Hotel Puerta América in Madrid and you were exhibited in Ivorypress as well. What is your relationship with Spain?

I also had a really nice exhibition on the Ramblas, in Barcelona, because I had won an award. But Spain is also my favorite place for holidays. I’m a neighbor here, I go to Formentera. It was introduced to me by Javier Mariscal many years ago. We did an exhibition to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Pompidou Center. They chose ten designers to represent all the different directions of design. I represented ruinism because I was

playing with concrete that I broke, don’t ask me why. Mariscal and I were the youngest.

There were all sorts of Mendinis… We had no choice, we became very good friends because we were the little boys. And then Mariscal started charming us and pulling us to Barcelona, Formentera… He did a very good job.

Do you compare your work with your contemporaries?

I believe so. Everything you do, if it is visible enough, or visible at all, and if it offers something new, is part of a dialogue. When I go to an exhibition or I go to see something, and I’m not jealous, it’s not good. If I go to an exhibition and there’s no jealousy, I think: “Why am I wasting my time here?” At the same time, when I have an idea, I think: “Is it good or not?” If I saw these glasses in a gallery or, since this is not art, in an optician’s shop, would I be jealous? If the answer is yes, then I go ahead and do it. But if the answer is no…

Alexandre de Betak (Paris, 1968) has worked for years turning the most prominent runways and fashion shows into spectacular scenographies that bring together originality and technical skill.

Con sede en Nueva York, en París y en Shanghái, Bureau Betak ha construido su imaginario en torno a los desfiles de las marcas de moda más reconocidas (Christian Dior, Tiffany & Co., John Galliano, Hussein Chalayan, Victoria’s Secret...) Sus escenografías, siempre originales, investigan todos los campos de la creación, desde la más artesanal a la más tecnológica, desde la más artificial a la más natural. Cimenta sus proyectos en cuatro elementos. El primero sería la localización (ha intervenido en míticos lugares como el Louvre de París, la Ciudad Prohibida de Pekín o la Plaza Roja de Moscú), que otorga una narrativa a la historia. A continuación la puesta en escena busca crear algo nuevo, ya sea arquitectónico, distópico o fantástico. Es donde la perfección y el alarde técnico se hacen presentes. La luz, obsesión de Alexandre de Betak desde que era niño, sería el tercer pilar, el que otorga la credibilidad y el éxito definitivo a la intervención. Por último, la performance representaría el elemento vivo: es el movimiento y la vida humana. Es, según el diseñador, donde el resto de los elementos se unen y se encuentran en un balance preciso pero sutil.

With offices in New York, Paris, and Shanghai, Bureau Betak has developed its aesthetic around the design and production of fashion shows for the most prestigious international firms (Christian Dior, Tiffany & Co., John Galliano, Hussein Chalayan, Victoria’s Secret, to name just a few).

Its set designs, always original, research into all the fields of creation, from pure crafstmanship to high technology, and from the most artificial making to the most natural. The Bureau’s projects are based on four elements. The first would be the venue (working in mythical places like the Louvre in Paris, the Forbidden City in Beijing, or Moscow’s Red Square), which gives the story a narrative thread.

Next, the mise-en-scène or set seeks creating something new, be it architectural, dystopian, or fantastic. This is where perfection and technical display are made visible. Light, Alexandre de Betak’s obsession since he was a child, would the third element, which brings credibility and marks the final success of the intervention.

Lastly, the performance would represent the live element: movement and human life. This is where, according to the designer, the rest of the components come together in a precise but subtle balance.

Representantes de dos de los estudios escandinavos más importantes, Ingels (BIG) y Thorsen (Snøhetta), se reunieron en Pamplona con motivo del IV Congreso Internacional de Arquitectura y Sociedad, celebrado bajo el lema ‘Cambio de clima’. Aunque sus obras son fácilmente distinguibles y evidentemente diferentes entre sí, su acercamiento a la arquitectura es casi idéntico.

Ambos se inspiran en la relación con el paisaje, el que han visto desde niños y que, como a tantos otros autores nórdicos, ha condicionado su obra y su trayectoria.

Bjarke Ingels: Puede sonar a cliché, sobre todo en el entorno escandinavo, pero a mí me parece muy interesante el hecho de que hagáis un ascenso anual al pico Snøhetta.

Nosotros también hacíamos una excursión anual hasta el año pasado, cuando hubo una tormenta de nieve terrible en la que ya habían muerto siete personas, y decidimos quedarnos en el valle. Fue tan impactante que este año ni siquiera hemos organizado un nuevo viaje.

Kjetil Thorsen: Debéis hacerlo. Es como un accidente de coche, tienes que volver a conducir inmediatamente o siempre tendrás

miedo a conducir. Para nosotros es importante porque construyes nuevos y, sobre todo, distintos tipos de relaciones con los que te rodean. Además, en este caso, la excursión a la montaña hace que te sientas tan cerca del paisaje, que casi parece una relación sexual…

«La naturaleza es un enorme parque de juegos para adultos» BI: Últimamente he pensado lo mucho que me aporta la naturaleza. Y no me refiero a ir de vacaciones a un buen hotel y disfrutar mucho del paisaje. Me refiero a desaparecer en ella, cuando todo es tan completamente impredecible, tan indescriptible que es exclusivamente tu responsabilidad disfrutarlo, habitarlo. Es un parque de juegos para adultos gigantesco.

KT: También es un forma de aprender arquitectura. Esquiar, por ejemplo, es la mejor manera de describir la sección de un paisaje, a través de la altura y la velocidad. Dibujas las líneas de contorno continuamente, y

acabas percibiendo la abstracción del paisaje. Y a la inversa escalando, con su paciencia y lentitud. Cuando escalas y te ves colgado de una inmensa pared, tan despacio, tienes la sensación de estar lejos de todo, pero al mismo tiempo sientes que no puedes estar más cerca del propio muro.

BI: Recuerdo un viaje increíble en el que estábamos ascendiendo un sendero, la altura total eran unos 1.800 metros, y llovía sin parar, lluvia incesante durante toda la semana. Todo estaba mojado y resbalaba, por lo que subir fue complicadísimo. Era maravilloso estar a esa altura entre las nubes y que de repente se abriesen y dejasen paso a una impresionante vista y un segundo después, otra vez la nada. Rápido, muy rápido.

El problema fue luego al bajar. Resbalaba tanto que teníamos que tumbarnos boca abajo (en la espalda llevábamos la mochila) y dejarnos caer. Fue ese momento de verse deslizando cuesta abajo en una montaña grasienta cuando entendí el poder de la naturaleza, y lo que significaba la rendición total a los elementos.

KT: Al final volvemos de nuevo al sexo con el paisaje… Para mí sólo hay dos situa-

Founders of two of the leading Scandinavian architecture studios, Bjarke Ingels (BIG) and Kjetil Thorsen (Snøhetta), coincided in Pamplona during the IV International Congress of the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad, held under the motto ‘Change of Climate’. Though their works are readily distinguishable and evidently different, their approach to architecture is practically the same. They both take inspiration from the landscape, the one they have known since their childhood, and that, as in the case of so many Nordic authors, has marked their career and work.

Bjarke Ingels: Maybe this is a cliché in the concepts of Scandinavia but the fact that you guys do this annual hike to the Snøhetta mountain is very interesting to me. We also go on an expedition every year, but last year there was a terrible snowstorm in which seven people had died, so we had to stay in the valley. It was so shocking though that we haven’t actually planned this year’s trip.

Kjetil Thorsen: But you have to do it. It is like a car crash, you have to go straight back to the car, or you will be always scared of driving. For us it is important because you build many new kinds of relationships. When

you get so close to landscape, you are almost having sex with the landscape…

BI: I have been thinking that I get so much out of getting into nature. Not just staying in a nice hotel and then seeing a lot of nature, but mostly disappearing into it in a way that

“Nature is a like a gigantic playground for grown-ups” is so fully unprogrammed and uncategorized that it is entirely up to you to enjoy or inhabit it. It is a gigantic playground for grown-ups.

KT: It is also a way of learning about architecture. Skiing, for example, is the best way of describing the section of a landscape, through height and speed. You are following the contour lines of landscape continuously, so you get a really close perception of the abstraction of the landscape when you are skiing. But it is the same with the slowness of climbing. When you are climbing, and you are hanging from the wall, you get the feeling of being far from everything, but at the same time the wall could not be any closer.

BI: I remember this amazing experience.

We were walking up this pass, it was like an 1,800-meter ascent and it was raining nonstop, endless rain for a week. Everything was slippery, so climbing up was super hard. It was beautiful. Up there we were in the clouds, and once in a while they would open and you would have this magnificent view, but right after they would close again, very fast. Finally, when we walked down, we constantly had to lie down, flat on the stomach – we could not do it on our backs, because we had the backpacks – and slide down this kind of greasy mountain.

It was a complete surrender to the elements.

KT: We keep drifting in the direction of having sex with the landscape… For me there are only two situations in the world: the mountains or the sea. Everything in between is kind of boring.

BI: I totally agree.

KT: But I like that. That type of challenge.

I have this feeling sometimes, that if we don’t have enough wind I would close the office sort of thing, because you need the forces against to get there. If it is not windy enough, stay home. If you see where our offices are located in Oslo, we are completely exposed

to the weather. The location is directly south towards the fjord, twenty meters away from it, and it is this huge warehouse that sits in the outermost peak of Oslo, below the castle. So you are getting all the weather: the winter, the spring, the autumn, the summer… We have all the fisherman in front. It is actually this kind of closeness to these things, as we were discussing before, that makes you learn from them. To design something you need to be filled with it. You have to be under the skin of things. Landscape does that to you.

BI: Just to finish this landscape theme, I think that there is something that our work shares, this idea of invitation. You called it generosity. It’s an invitation to something different. One of our first buildings, the VM Houses, has these triangular balconies, 5 meters long. The idea was to get so far out into the air that you could actually turn around and look at your building. When you are standing there, you feel in the air, surrounded only by your neighbors. Obviously also with The Mountain and the Eight House, where you climb up a ski slope. In other words, the idea that each project somehow tries to make available something that would normally be off limits, so that you end up having not an accumulation of private domains, but rather

a new kind of man-made landscape.

KT: We talked about architecture being active. To me it is about prepositions: in, over, through, within… Anything that can relate to many prepositions all of a sudden moves into active positioning in relation to people.

If you can walk through, over, in, under, and so forth and so forth, then you are close to the landscape. Because the landscape and our whole language is based on the fact that we develop prepositions to define our position.

“The separation between inside and outside in the debates is limiting to architecture and to the public space” Where we are in relation to something else.

If architecture is only ‘in’ then it is not active, because it only defines one preposition.

It has to have a whole range of prepositions in order to be active. This was the discussion we had at the Venice Biennale, and that is why I am no longer happy with the separation between inside and outside in the debates on public space, simply because I believe that it is limiting to the architecture, and to the

public space. These are the type of things that I try to follow, and I see in your designs that you are trying to create active buildings too.

BI: Definitely. We normally differentiate when there is a need, “a must have,” or a desire, a “nice to have.” The more “nice to haves” you can add to what the client is asking or to the program, the better.

KT: For instance, there’s a debate now at the urban city planning offices in Oslo because they don’t know how to represent the Opera House in plans. Is it a building? Do they cut the building below? Or is it outer space? They don’t know! And that’s fantastic.

BI: That is exactly my dream. I have been saying this all the time, in a city map building is yellow, public building is red, park is green… and I have been focusing on this idea that industrial is gray. It is like this cancerous tissue in the city map, but I am curious to see how are they going to label the power plant. It should be green, or maybe red… but definitely not gray, even though it is also gray.

KT: I agree. These are the kinds of hybrids you learn about by moving back to nature and landscape. Landscape was never only one thing. Unless we accept the complexities of the systems we are dealing with, we will get nowhere. And I think that is something to

Muchas veces pienso, por ejemplo, que si el viento en contra no es muy fuerte debería cerrar el estudio porque se necesitan las fuerzas en contra para llegar a tus objetivos. Si el viento no es suficientemente fuerte, quédate en casa. Si te fijas en donde tenemos nuestras oficinas en Oslo, verás que estamos completamente expuestos al clima. Una nave en la punta más alejada de la ciudad, mirando al sur, directamente al fiordo, a veinte metros de él. Recibes todo el clima: el invierno, la primavera, el otoño, el verano… Además tienes a todos los pescadores delante. Y es la cercanía a estas cosas, como ya hablábamos antes, la que te hace aprender de ellas. Para diseñar algo, debes conocerlo por dentro.

Debes meterte bajo la piel de las cosas. El paisaje lo consigue.

BI: Para acabar con el tema del paisaje.

Creo que hay algo que nuestros trabajos comparten, y es la idea de invitación. Te he oído llamarlo generosidad. Es una invitación a algo distinto. En una de nuestras primeras viviendas, las VM Houses, introdujimos unos balcones de 5 metros de ancho. La idea era estar en el vacío, tan lejos como fuese posible. Cuando te pones en la punta sientes que estás en el aire, sólo rodeado por tus vecinos. Esto también se da, por supuesto, en el proyecto The Mountain y la Eight House donde subes por una pista de esquí. La idea es que cada proyecto permita algo que habitualmente es inaccesible, de forma que no tienes una acumulación

de recintos privados, sino un nuevo tipo de paisaje artificial creado por el hombre.

KT: Hablábamos de que la arquitectura debía ser activa. Para mí tiene que ver con las preposiciones: en, sobre, entre…

Algo que se pueda relacionar con muchas preposiciones de repente te coloca en una posición activa frente al mundo. Si puedes andar sobre, o bajo algo, si puedes atravesarlo… etcétera, entonces estás cerca del

Porque el paisaje, y todo nuestro lenguaje se basa en el hecho de que desarrollamos preposiciones para definir nuestra posición ante las cosas. Dónde estamos en relación con otros. Si la arquitectura sólo significase estar ‘dentro’, entonces no estaríamos siendo sujetos activos, porque sólo se define con una preposición. Debe haber un conjunto de preposiciones para que lo seamos. Esta discusión la tuvimos en la Bienal de Venecia; yo no me conformo con la distinción entre dentro y fuera en el debate sobre el espacio público, simplemente porque creo que eso limita la arquitectura y el propio espacio público. Me interesan tus diseños porque veo que tú también buscas crear edificios activos.

BI: Sin duda. Normalmente diferenciamos cuando hay una necesidad, un «debería tener», o un deseo, un «me gustaría tener».

Cuantos más «me gustaría tener» puedas

añadir a lo que el cliente o el programa pide, mejor.

KT: Por ejemplo, ahora hay una discusión en las oficinas de urbanismo de Oslo porque no saben cómo representar la Ópera en los planos. ¿Es un edificio?¿Es una plaza? ¿Debe aparecer proyectado o seccionado?

No lo saben, y eso es fantástico.

BI: Ese es mi sueño. En los planos urbanos la zona residencial es amarilla, los edificios públicos son rojos, los parques son verdes… y ahora mi obsesión son las zonas grises, las industriales. Es como un tejido canceroso en los mapas. Por eso me interesa saber cómo van a etiquetar nuestra central eléctrica. Debería ser verde, o quizá roja, pero definitivamente no gris. Aunque también es gris…

KT: Estoy de acuerdo. Esta clase de híbridos son los que conoces en el paisaje y la naturaleza. Nunca son una sola cosa. Si no aceptamos la complejidad de los sistemas en los que nos movemos, es imposible que progresemos. No podemos copiar la naturaleza, pero debemos pensar que cuando hacemos un nuevo edificio, no es una naturaleza artificial, sino una nueva realidad. Esta realidad, sin embargo, sí puede aprender cosas de cómo opera la naturaleza, para empezar, de estos aspectos híbridos de los que hablamos. Vuestro trabajo lo hace mucho en cuanto a infraestructuras sociales, donde añadís una función sobre la otra. Es una estrategia fantástica, porque es lo que hace el paisaje. La montaña te da agua, pero también puedes esquiar sobre ella, etc.

BI: Para mí hay dos tendencias. Una es la centralización extrema. Por ejemplo,

compañías globales (Amazon, Walmart…) cada vez tienen centros de distribución más grandes y más centralizados, como si quisiesen conseguir una única nave de distribución para toda América. Pero hay otro proceso, sobre todo en las ciudades, que es la descentralización extrema. Las huertas de las azoteas en Nueva York, por ejemplo. Hay un gran deseo de tenerlas, e incluso hay casi una ideología alrededor de ellas, pero luego la gente está demasiado ocupada para cultivar sus propios tomates. Yo creo que si convences a una gran compañía de que llame a todos estos propietarios para convencerles de que ellos se encarguen de instalar, gestionar, operar y mantener tu cubierta a cambio de un 50% del beneficio que se obtenga, todo el mundo saldría ganando.

KT: Nosotros estudiamos el tema e incluso calculamos el peso de la tierra y su productividad, más aun cuando coges la tierra de cultivos abandonados, que lleva

años curtiéndose y limpiándose. Una capa de 30 centímetros de suelo agrícola está repleta de energía remanente. Desperdiciarla en lugar de utilizarla para la producción de alimentos, es una insensatez.

BI: Estamos reformando una central eléctrica en Vancouver, y además de muchos sistemas sostenibles de energía, hemos

KT: Sí que lo es. Debemos confiar en las tecnologías del futuro, y en su desarrollo.

Podrían pasar tantas cosas en el diseño industrial... Es una de las áreas donde siento que hemos hecho mucho y, al mismo tiempo, nada. El diseño industrial en arquitectura, por ejemplo, prácticamente no existe.

Estamos intentando producir en cadena pequeños objetos del día a día. Como una lámpara de bolsillo, por ejemplo. La antorcha es un grandísimo invento porque puedes llevar la luz contigo a todas partes. Hay un escritor de ciencia ficción que escribió un libro fascinante que hablaba de vidrios que retenían la luz durante veinte años y, por lo tanto, los paisajes. Eso quiere decir que podrías instalar una vista panorámica en tu casa. No necesitarías televisión, instalarías una vista a las cataratas del Niágara directamente en Nueva York, simplemente a través de la retención de luz. Es ciencia ficción, lo sé, pero es hermoso.

learn from nature. We cannot copy nature, but whenever we create a new building, it is not an abstract landscape but a new reality.

And reality can learn things from how nature operates, hybrid aspects. You have been focusing a lot on that when it comes to your social infrastructures, where you add one function on top the other. It is a fantastic strategy because it is what landscapes do. They provide you with water but you can also ski. They provide you with trees, but you can also walk.

BI: In my view there are two tendencies.

One is an extreme centralization. For instance, global companies (Amazon, Walmart…) have bigger and bigger distribution centers but are more and more centralized, as if they were trying to create a single warehouse for all of America. But there is another process, happening in cities, which is extreme decentralization, or mixing. Roof farming in New York, for example. There is a huge desire for it, almost as an ideology, maybe as a hobby, though most people living in cities are too busy to grow their tomatoes. But I really think that if you get a company to call out warehouse owners and say: “we would like to take possession of

your roof, we will install, manage, operate, maintain and you will get 50% of the crops,” everyone would benefit.

KT: We have also studied it and we calculated the weight of the earth and the productivity of the earth that you could get straight out of the agriculture soil that was already on the ground once its clean. The 30-centimeter layer of agricultural soil is full of embodied energy. To throw it away and not use it as food production is kind of a waste.

BI: We are doing this power plant in Vancouver, and aside from several sustainable

KT: That is cool. Also, we have to rely on the future technologies, and their development. So much could happen in the field of industrial design. It is one of the areas where I feel that we have done a lot but at the same time, nothing. The industrial design elements in architecture, for instance, are completely missing, so one of the few things that we are starting to do now is actively moving more into the hardware production line of smaller things in life. Pocket lamps, for instance. A torch is a fantastic invention because you carry the light with you. There was this fiction writer who talked about glass that retains light, and for light to penetrate through the glass it takes about twenty years. So that means that you have this panoramic window, and then you build it into your home. You don’t have a TV, you have a one to one vision to Niagara Falls in New York, because the delay of twenty years actually puts the real image in your living room. Simply through the delay of light penetration. It is science fiction of course, but it is actually beautiful.
