MAX WAGNER continues his winning ways with lambs
M
ax Wagner of the Raisin Slickers 4H group had another good year at the Lenawee County Fair, winning Grand Champion Market Lamb and Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb. This was his fourth year for beating out the tough competition for Grand Champion Market Lamb. Wagner was also successful with his goats, taking Champion Wether, Reserve Champion Wether, Overall Champion Showman, and Senior Showman. In March when the winter winds are still blowing in Lenawee County, Wagner is in his family’s barn spending time with lambs. The process starts slow as he and the lambs get to know each other. “You want to work with them every day,” Wagner said. Having shown lambs at the fair since he was eight-years-old, Wagner knows
(Above) Max Wagner gets his Grand Champion Market Lamb into position. (Right) In the bustle of the 2018 Lenawee County Fair, Max Wagner is helped by his father, Jason, standing at left.

exactly the routine that works best and is most likely to lead to success in four months at the Lenawee County Fair. In addition to proper training, the lambs must have good genes. Wagner and his family rely on select breeders to provide them with the best lambs. Before the lambs are ready to walk around a show ring in front of a crowd and potential buyers, Wagner must teach his lambs everything he knows about the process, which is challenging. Threemonth-old lambs are not known for their ability to focus. “Repetition is key,” said Wagner. “It takes a while for the lambs to get to that point, but they do get there. The beginning is the hardest part. At the end they are calmer.” Diet plays a big part in creating a grand champion lamb. “We feed them a seventeen percent feed. It’s a mixture of
fats and proteins,” Wagner said. Barley is also part of a good lamb diet. The diet changes over the four months, and especially right before the fair in July. A good diet helps to highlight the ideal bone structure looked for by judges in the market lambs. With his senior year at Manchester High School on the horizon, Wagner thinks this is his last year for showing at the Lenawee County Fair. Learning his father and mother, Jason and Elissa, both showed lambs at the fair when they were growing up was what got Wagner interested in the process. Now, all these summers later, he is ready to hand over his winning ways to a younger group of 4-H’ers who want to guide little lambs into becoming grand champions. Maybe someday those winning 4-H members will be Wagner’s children, carrying on the family tradition.

ifteen-year-old Zach Higgins doesn’t do much meal preparation at home, but he enjoys the challenge of cooking over an open fire, so much so that he has entered the open fire cooking exhibit category at the Lenawee County Fair for the past three years. The Adrian teen, a member of the Palmyra Future Leaders 4-H club, has a family connection to the event, which has been in existence for less than a decade. He said he didn’t have a lot of experience with outdoor cooking before he jumped into the cooking category. “But you know, my grandparents, my grandma, she was always here at the fair and she kind of helped with this. She kind of brought me into this,” he said of the late Kathy Sheldon. “His grandmother actually started this class probably six or seven years ago,” said Ken Lake, one of the event judges. “It

Zach Higgins (l), a member of the Palmyra Future Leaders 4-H club, prepares to check his entry in the open fire cooking exhibition at the Lenawee County Fair on July 21, with the assistance of judge Ken Lake. was something she thought of, that she thought might be neat to attract kids.” Meriah Roesch is the superintendent who oversees the exhibition. “Kathy Sheldon started it and then brought me on about two years after, to have me take it over from there,” she said. The fire pits used for the cooking exhibitors were donated by Sheldon’s family last year to honor her memory. “She always wanted to figure out a way to add some new things for the kids to do, and this is something she started that we’ve been fortunate enough to continue,” said Roesch. “The kids really like it. It gets the boys involved, too.” She estimated that each year between 12 and 15 youth from various 4-H clubs sign up to cook something outdoors. “You get to try different stuff,” Higgins said. “Most of the time people just cook on the stove, and it tastes different if you cook it on the fire because you get the wood flame and you get the different taste. It just gives you an extra opportunity to go outside and have some fun with the family.” The young cook’s campfire macaroni and cheese recipe included noodles he cooked ahead of time, as well as Alfredo sauce and mozzarella, sharp cheddar, and parmesan cheese. He explained how he mixed all of the ingredients in a foil tin. “You’ve got to put some half-and-half in there just to make sure that it’s all loosey-goosey, so nothing sticks,” he said. Lake said the judges expect the older kids to do a little more preparation or use a more complicated recipe. “The little kids come in and they do a s’more or they do a hot dog,” he said. Food safety is a big part of the
process, and stressing proper food handling procedures not only gives exhibitors a better score, it teaches participants the essentials of keeping food safe to eat. “All in all, it’s just basically an activity for the kids to earn some extra credit and get a little experience, and the interaction between youth and adults helps these kids to go out later and interact with adults,” said Lake. Judge Frank Bolak said he looks at how a participant prepares the meal, how the food is transported to the cooking site, what they chose to cook and how they season it. “And then, ultimately, what it tastes like when they’re finished,” he said. “A lot of the youth aren’t used to to timing what they’re cooking, and that’s really important if you’re going to do any kind of foil meal because if it isn’t timed right it’ll either be burned or raw.” He said part of open fire cooking involves understanding how long the food needs to cook, the temperature of the fire, the placement in the fire and how often to turn the food. Lake and Roesch said over the years the young cooks have prepared some food items not normally thought of as open fire cooking fare, such as pizza, creme brulee, scallops and Higgins’ macaroni and cheese. Participants can choose to cook over either charcoal or a wood fire made with logs. Both Lake and Bolak have been Boy Scout leaders for years, so they’ve acquired some open fire cooking experience and they understand the difficulty 4-H youth can have with cooking in the out-of-doors. “We can burn with the best of them” said Bolak. “I can turn good food into charcoal in no time.”
