his imposing two-story solid brick Greek Revival house has a gabled front with a full classical pediment topped by a raking cornice. The off-center main entry with its pilasters, transom and sidelights is framed by the open front porch with Ionic columns. Diane Proctor, in her book Beyond the Boulevard, notes that by 1868 the home’s twostory, flat-roofed wing was added at the rear and side of the house. The addition’s brick frieze ties it architecturally to the main house. As seen in some of the other brick Greek Revival homes in Tecumseh (for example, the Sirrell LeBaron House), this home boasts dramatic Greek key window moldings and wide woodwork in its public rooms.
his Promenade house narrative is really the story of one family with two houses on the same half-acre site. Census records show that Wilson and Sarah Stout moved to Michigan around 1834 from New York. Tax records show the Stout family were likely this property’s earliest inhabitants and suggest they lived continuously on this lot from before 1860 until after 1910. When Wilson died in 1861, Sarah raised their four children, Wilson H. (Henry), Herbert, Isabella, and Emma Antoinette (Nettie), apparently in the story-and-a-half, gable-front Greek Revival house (later converted to a carriage house and now a garage) on the back of this lot.
