idden Lake Gardens is leaving the lights on this Holiday Season with their annual luminous events. On December 2, from 4-8 p.m., visitors can enjoy Hidden Lake Gardens’ Holiday Festival. On this evening, the gardens will be aglow with 2,000 candle-lit luminaries depicting Christmas scenes. The twinkly evening will be accompanied by musical entertainment, crafts for the kids, and an opportunity to visit with Santa and have a photo picture taken while he listens to Christmas wishes. The gift shop will also be open. “We have so many perfect Christmas gifts for the horticultural-minded person,” said Cheryl Roe, Hidden Lake Gardens office manager. “We also have jewelry, books and crafts for children, and a lot of really great stocking stuffers.” Refreshments will be served in the conservatory, which houses a temperate house, an arid dome, and a tropical dome. The lights at Hidden Lake Gardens will continue beyond the day of the Holiday Festival as they celebrate three Evenings of Lights. On December 3, 9 and 10 from 5-8 p.m., visitors will have another opportunity to experience the 2,000 luminaries. Nutcracker the

Eighty young dancers will take to the TCA stage this December to bring a bit of holiday nostalgia to Tecumseh with an original production of the Nutcracker Ballet. The Nutcracker Ballet is not only one of the world’s most famous ballets, but over the years the music and dancing has become somewhat synonymous with holiday spirit. The ballet tells the story of Clara, a young girl whose mysterious Godfather Drosselmeyer brings her a Christmas gift of a Nutcracker doll. As Clara drifts off to sleep the Christmas tree begins to grow (or perhaps Clara is shrinking). Suddenly she is in a world fraught with epic battles with giant mice, she travels to a Land of Sweets with a beautiful dancing Sugar Plum Fairy, and Cara’s beloved Nutcracker becomes a prince. While there are many unique productions of the Nutcracker, Continued on Pg. 13

Continued from Pg. 10 perhaps what makes the TCA production a stand out is the rare collaboration between area dance studios. Every other year, Artistic Director Annamia Rumley of Tecumseh Dance Workshop leads a choreography team to create a performance that best highlights the abilities of the dancers. This year’s choreography team was made of up of representatives from Tecumseh Dance Workshop, Dance Steps Studio, Encore Dance Studio, and Dance with Heart Studios. Together, the instructors brought decades of dancing and choreography experience. It is this experience, combined with the opportunity for young dancers to experience performing in a large production, that draws dancers from as far as Jackson to audition for roles. Once dancers are chosen, they rehearse in Tecumseh throughout the fall to prepare for the December performances. This year, 80 dancers from eight different studios will take part in the show. “It is a real privilege to work in Tecumseh,” said Rumley. “Putting a production like this together is a really amazing feat, and it is possible because Tecumseh is a wonderful promoter and supporter of the arts. The city and the schools and the local businesses have all worked to make this production theirs. I have so much respect for this community.”
