What was your favorite part of Fuel Up to Play 60? I think it was teaching kids how to eat healthy with fruits, vegetable, grains and meat.
FUEL UP TO PLAY 60
helps students at Patterson Elementary School understand the importance of healthy eating
— Lucas Gray Mostly, making the food and preparing it for lunch. We wanted kids to try foods they had not had before. It was really fun. — Nolan Sebring
Coming up with ideas with the team that helped us. — Ashton Sawyer
It was fun to research and teach kids about eating healthy foods. — Braylon Zimmerman
Researching the different foods because we tried to find healthy foods people had not had before. — Braden Broderick
It was fun working together. People asked lots of questions and it was cool to teach them stuff. — Brenna Broman
Teaching older and little kids how to eat healthy. — Lily Gnodtke
I like the part when we chose the food people ate. It was a healthy variety. I don’t like unhealthy foods.
TECUMSEH – Healthy eating was the focus of a five-week project at Patterson Elementary School recently through a program titled Fuel Up to Play 60, funded through a grant received by Communities In Schools of the Tecumseh Area (CISTA) and sponsorship from Aramark food service. A team of third and fourth grade students participated in the “fuel up” project by organizing weekly tasting menus that they shared throughout the school. On tasting days, students were able to experience healthy foods, such as snap peas, pomegranate seeds, Colby Jack cheese, couscous and sushi. The Fuel Up to Play 60 team made presentations in each classroom to help educate students on the importance of eating fresh fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins. “It was fun and I was nervous to present to the classes but it was good to share information with them about healthy foods,” said team member Nolan Sebring. During lunch, all learners tried a food item and then voted on if they liked it or not. The feedback on the snap peas was so great, Aramark began to put them on the salad bar with regular lunches. A majority of students said they liked the healthy food alternatives. Joining in support of the program with CISTA and Aramark was Tecumseh’s specialty food preparation business, 3 Dudes and Dinner, which provided the sushi. Lucas Gray, of the Play 60 committee, said his favorite part was “making signs to share healthy messages and handing out foods to the students during lunch.”
— Morgan Manwaring Coming up with foods for the Tasting Fridays. It was fun to go out and show people foods they may not know anything about.

stories from Mrs. Frank’s Class at TEcumseh Acres Elementary School The Legend of the Pictured Rocks By: Max Marten
Long ago in a town called Munising in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan there lived a boy called Sammy Snowstopper. He was kindest and friendliest kid in the whole town. He wore a bright yellow Under Armour coat with navy blue jeans. That matched his dark blue eyes. He was taking a walk near Lake Superior to admire the beautiful ice shapes formed by the wind. Then he saw some people climbing the huge ice cliffs. He said to himself, “I hope they don’t fall. That’s a long way down” Then all of a sudden, just as he was thinking that, he saw a climber slip and fall from the cliff and hit the ice cold water. Blood was thrashing all over the cliff and made cool designs. “WOW!” Sammy exclaimed. But he wondered where the blood was coming from. “You don’t bleed when you fall into the water?” He said to himself. A moment later Sammy looked up on top of the rocks and saw an ice wizard with a pure white cloak, as white as snow, that had the name Izzy sewn into it. She was making icicles and throwing them at the climbers! Sammy knew he needed to help the climbers. So with his super strength he took a huge boulder out of a cliff and threw it at Izzy! When she realized that a huge was coming for her it was too late to jump out of the way and the huge boulder hit the wizard causing her to fall off the cliff. “I’m not done yet.”
Izzy yelled as she grabbed onto a ledge and started throwing icicles at Sammy! 10 minutes later Izzy’s hands gave up. They slipped off the ledge and she fell into the freezing cold water. She soon got hypothermia and died :( A few years later Sammy walked back to the fight scene and looked at the beautiful rocks that had very cool designs on them form the climbers blood. He looked down at the water and saw Izzy the ice wizard as hard as stone in the water. From this day on in Munising Michigan, the cliffs on Lake Superior are called The Pictured Rocks. All thanks to the climbers blood.
The Ride
By: Aeden Coryell
Did you know 430,000 Empire state buildings worth of ice has melted in antarctica is mostly done by cars all over the world. THAT’S why I think we should ride bikes more than cars. It helps save money, save environment, health and socializing. Shall we ride on? Our first stop is reason one why we should ride bikes more than cars shall be to save money. It helps with your health so that save health care money. Gas money because you do not need gas for a bike. It helps with repair money because you don’t have to take it into a repair shop like a car. When my car went to the repair shop its repair cost a lot of money. Plus bike parts cost less than cars parts. We have arrived at are next stop the stop is....... reason two of why we should ride bikes
more than cars. That reason is to save environment. Driving cars keep making global warming worse. But bikes don’t make exhaust so they don’t keep making global warming worse. Cars exhaust melt the ice, in the future if we don’t stop the whole planet will flood and many people with die dun dun dun. Also, car exhaust makes air pollution which can cause people and even animals to get sick and may die. But bikes don’t have exhaust to cause air pollution. Here is the final stop....... It’s reason number three of why we should ride bikes more than cars. That reason is health and socializing. Riding bikes keeps you fit by pedaling while you are going down a path but cars don’t let you exercise while going. While riding a bike you could meet people, interact with them and you might become friends. Plus, you see the world better on a bike than a car because you can go in different areas than a car could. Car lovers, did you like the ride? Did I convince you that riding a bike in not only better for the environment but for you too. You are not only saving money by not buying gas as often or for car maintenance. You are saving money be keeping healthy. You, also, may make many valuable friendships while you ride along. And in doing all of this for you...... you help save the world.
made a deal with me. If I could ride an upside down ride that I could go to cedar point. I could hear people screaming from the terrifying rides. Right then my heart started pounding, my face was turning red. And I had to admit I was pretty scared, but I wasn’t going to give up. We walked in. Gave the ticket lady the money, and we went to sit down. We were just there because my papa’s job was celebrating, and of course for the 1 ticket ride’s. I think he just came for the food, but i’m pretty sure that he was excited to spend time with his grandchildren, I thought. Shortly after we all ate. We went to go find some rides. It probably wasn’t a good idea to eat before riding the rides, I thought to myself. Right then I saw the swings. “oh let’s go ride the swings,” I hollered. All of us except Emerson went to ride them. Ahhh we all screamed in excitement. You would think that the swings weren’t that scary, but they were as scary as a clown chasing you. When it rocked back it felt like you were falling out of mid air. At last it was finally over with. For the next ride my mom, and sister went to go find a ride. So me and my cousin went to ride the Alien Ship. The alien ship was like a tradition to me. I rode it every time I came. At that time we were left with the ride that was going to prepare me for the ultimate ride. The..... Fire Bowl. That was the ride I had to ride to go The Fair to cedar point. By the time that By: Mieah Rodriguez was over it was time for the Fire There we were at the Bowl. As soon as I was first in fairgrounds. My mom had line. It started all over again.
My heart started pounding even harder. You sure you want to do this, my mom said. Definitely I shrieked I am NOT riding in the back, I demanded. OK fine she said softly. We ended up riding one before the very back, and my step dad sat in the back. My heart was still pounding and I honestly didn’t think I was going to make it! But there is no way I can turn back now. I was already in and buckled up. Then it moved a little. It was about to start. It want up slowly. Then stopped... at the most obvious stop. UPSIDE DOWN! Anything but this I thought. It stayed there for about probably 10 seconds. Then ZOOM it want down so fast. Then up a little bit faster. It did that about 5 times. Then it want down, up, upside down. But this time it stayed up longer. OK so far, my mom yelled. Yes I yelled back. It was like she new it was going to stay upside down longer this time. In not even miniet ZOOM it want down then stopped. It was done. I thought I was going regret it, but really I don’t. Insted it was the best time of my life!
All kids should play sports By: Jessica Wilkinson
Mo Rocca said, “Teamwork builds character-teaches people about leadership and cooperation.” I agree with Mo Rocca that all kids should play sports. In the following paragraphs I will explain that it’s good to stay fit, good
teamwork, and learning new skills. Read on to find out. First I will tell you why you should stay fit. The first reason why you should stay fit is you grow up well rounded, confident, and hardworking. The second reason why you should stay fit is it helps your heart work good. The last reason why you should stay fit is you will always be active. In the following paragraph I will tell you why sports teach teamwork and why it’s important. The first reason is when you use teamwork you will get along with other kids. The next reason is you will get to know you teammates well and you might get a new friend. Let me tell you something I would want to use teamwork because you might win a game and you will have fun. The last reason is it’s a life skill because when you are older and you work you will need to use teamwork to get stuff done. The last reason all kids should play sports are you learn new skills. The first reason why learning new skills is good is because you will do better in school because you won’t feel like running around. Wouldn’t you want to do good ins school. Another reason why learning new skills and moves. I would want to learn new skills so I can get better at sports. The last reason why learning new skills is important is because if you know how to do that skill then you have something new to do. All in all I think all kids should play sports because you will stay fit, use teamwork, and learn new skills. Think about it. If you don’t play a sport just try it you might love it.
